W EtoLourC O M E fall issue

Welcome to the Fall issue of the Nola Wedding Guide. We are the ONLY quarterly wedding publication in Louisiana and put out a brand new magazine every 3 months to keep you in the loop of all things wedding related. We don’t just change the cover and call it a new magazine. Wink, Wink!

Any previous readers of the Nola Wedding Guide will notice that the magazine has undergone a startling transformation from last issue. We are in the process of rebranding the Nola Wedding Guide with the objective of improving the magazine in all areas. Out with the old and in with the new! We have a new logo that is really bold, but yet classy and we have included the byline to include the word Louisiana. We have recently drastically increased our distribution throughout the state and been accepted into the Costco chain. The Nola Wedding Guide is available statewide and not just in New Orleans! Pick one up today! We have also completely revamped the look of the magazine to have a much fresher, more contemporary feel. You will notice that it is a much easier read with more content and better editorials. Special thanks go to EFMDesigns, Tayla Young, and Stephanie Geiling Cure for their work under less than desirable circumstances. This magazine is a tribute to their work and professionalism.

I would like to thank my previous lead designer Traci Howerton for her passion and work on the Nola Wedding Guide. Traci pulled us out of many predicaments with her organization and untiring work ethic. She believed in me when not many did. Thank you! Enjoy our Fall issue and stay tuned as we continue improving the Nola Wedding Guide! I also invite you to be on the lookout for the all new Nola Wedding Guide website that is under construction. Happy Planning! God Bless!

WEDDING

Sunset Times (AVG) January

In New Orleans, outdoor ceremonies are as common as roast beef poboys. Our sub tropical climate keeps our weather pleasant yearround and contributes to making our city an ideal backdrop for your special day. However, an outdoor ceremony can sometimes be tricky to plan. Knowing some basic information such as which months are the rainiest, the average temperature for each month and what time the sun sets, may mean the difference in planning for a spring wedding or holding off until the fall to get your ideal climate conditions. Also, knowing the sunset times can be crucial for getting your wedding photos just right. We have put together an almanac to assist you in planning your outdoor wedding ceremony. Leave the clamps at Home Depot. Every wedding show brings out those big white clamps to give you the perfect silhouette in the gown. However, sometimes the image in the mirror isn’t what you’ll get once it’s altered. Instead, ask for someone in alterations to come pin the dress, if possible, so you can get a feel for what the actual modifications to the dress will look like.

ALTERATIONS

Y

ou’re on a quest for the dress of your dreams. You’ve found it and it takes your breath away…but it doesn’t quite fit. The salesperson assures you it WILL fit when you head down the aisle. How can you be sure it’s not just a sales pitch? Following the suggestions below can ensure that on your special day, everything looks –and fitsjust as it should. Know your size. Bridal sizing differs from sizing for street clothes. Often, it’s two sizes above your regular size. If you’re interested in a particular designer, make sure

Ask about the fine print. Some bridal salons advertise “free alterations”. Unfortunately, that often means the minimumtaking up hems, shortening straps, repairing loose beadwork, etc. That doesn’t necessarily include taking in or letting out a dress several sizes, altering the waistline, or adding additional beadwork or sleeves. If extensive alterations aren’t in their included offerings, you may be best served by having your work done by a tailor or modiste. Be cautious in allowing your alterations to be done by a friend or family member: your wedding dress shouldn’t be someone’s learning curve. STYLE ME PRETTY > 28

to view their sizing guide so you can know what to ask for at the boutique. You want the size that comfortably fits the largest part of your body and is as near to your regular size as possible. A dress that is too big will almost certainly need rebuilding if you purchase the sample and you may not like the fit. Similarly, in regards to a dress that is too small, it is difficult (and costly) to let out a dress more than one or two sizes, especially if the fabric offers little seam allowance (such as silk, satin, or velvet) without the original seam line showing.

CONTINUED FROM PAGE 25 Make an appointment If the boutique offers alterations appointments, I strongly suggest you make one. Find a slot that allows for a full hour; don’t try to squeeze a fitting into an already busy day or your lunch break. Ask the shop to recommend a good time to come in. Alert, kind seamstresses and brides are happy seamstresses and brides! Make an evening appointment on a weekday (avoid Saturdays for fittings if at all possible). You want their full concentration on your dress. Bring your foundation garments and shoes to ALL of your fittings. Yes, this is absolutely necessary. They should also fit correctly. Even if they don’t appear to drastically shape you, your foundation garments (including bridal slip and Spanx) WILL affect the way the dress hangs on your figure. You don’t want to end up with a different fit on your wedding day because of a different bra. Depending upon the cut of the dress, wearing the wrong bra can even affect whether the hem hangs evenly. If you’re not able to get shoes you want before your fitting, wear shoes at the same heel height as

your intended purchase and have the hem marked for the next fitting, when you can bring the pair you’ll actually wear. Don’t trip. No, really If you aren’t confident in your ability to glide everywhere with ease, get your hem taken up to about 1” from the floor. You’ll be at a heightened anxiety level on your big day, and you want to ensure you can remain effortlessly glamorous throughout. If you are wearing a long veil, I recommend trying it on with your dress to make sure the hem of the dress and the fall of the veil correspond. Get fitted later than sooner Have your fittings –ideally, three- scheduled within two months of your big day. Fitting done too early means that whatever weight you gain or lose during your planning process won’t impact the fit of your dress too greatly. No one wants to be mainlining fried chicken (or the Master Cleanse!) during the most exciting time of their betrothal

because they jumped the gun. Your last fitting should be two weeks before your wedding so any problems that arise have enough time to be corrected. Courteous brides get the best fits It should go without saying, but arrive for your fitting clean, gum and beverage free, and polite. Your tailor will appreciate it. Try not to move around too much while they are pinning: it ensures the most accurate fit and keeps you from getting stuck. Listen with an open mind to their recommendations about your dress- they are professionals who are intimately familiar with garment construction, and may know of a better way to make the look match your vision. You can get a second opinion after the fact, but hear them out. Take your posse Have your mom, maid of honor, or a close friend come with you to at least two fittings, especially the final fitting. They bring a valuable second pair of eyes to the gowns’ fit, and spot any problem areas you or the seamstress hasn’t spotted. They will also be

able to find out how to best zip, lace, and bustle your gown from the experts, so it can be replicated correctly on your wedding day. If no one can accompany you, ask for the directions to be written down. Test the fit You want to be able to dance, sit, hug, and walk on your big day. After the dress has been pinned to you and you’re given the all clear to leave the pedestal, take a minute to get down and move around so you can let the seamstress know if adjustments need to be made. I hope this advice allows you to have the best experience possible and find quality, one-on-one service. Happy fitting! Aria M. Norman proposed to me at City Park. We were about to go on a gondola ride when he popped the question. I was not expecting it at all. In fact, I think I may have blacked out a little. I was that excited. The wedding planning was stressful at times, but for the most part I enjoyed it. My mother and grandmother helped me with everything. They went above and beyond to make sure that everything would be perfect.

N

orman’s reaction when he first saw me walk down the aisle made me feel amazing! We decided not to do a first look and I’m so glad that we didn’t. He just covered his mouth and that simple gesture brought tears to my eyes. All of the stress that comes with planning a wedding completely fell away in that moment.

“The reception was amazing!”

If I could do it all over again, I would do everything the exact same way. We had a blast! The most memorable part for me was when our two-year-old son joined in on our first dance. I’m glad he got to experience this night. Although he won’t remember much, he will remember watching his daddy dance. Our son smiled the whole time while everyone watched us.

Sylvia Joan Lo and Cody Francis Heitmeier

Sylvia and I met in a bar one Sunday afternoon fifteen years ago. I told Sylvia we were going to have dinner with my parents to discuss our annual family trip. I told her my son (Nolan) and I had to stop at the soccer store first, and for her to ride with my parents. Nolan and I arrived at the restaurant early, dressed in tuxedos and hid in the private wine room while my parents and Sylvia arrived. Once they were all seated, the waiter signaled to me and I walked out with my son and bent down on one knee in front of her. Nolan stood there with two cookies in his hand - Sylvia would always bake cookies for us - and Nolan said to Sylvia: “Ms. Sylvia, will you bake us cookies for the rest of our lives and marry us? T O P F E AT U R E S Florist The Plant Gallery

Sylvia Joan Lo and Cody Francis Heitmeier

I – the groom – did all the planning for the wedding. I enjoy event planning and I had a lot of fun with it. Sylvia was a very easy bride in regards to what she cared about. The only thing she really wanted to be a part of was the menu. She wasn’t about to miss the tastings!

M

y favorite part of the wedding day was when I was standing at the altar. The church doors opened and I saw her for the first time. That and the deacon kept calling me by my brother’s name – Cory, instead of Cody. My most memorable part of the wedding was at the end of the night, when the reception was over. We were finished drinking at the hotel bar when we decided to go to Krystal Burger with some friends. Our friends put us in a Pedi-cab, which brought us to and from Krystal Burger.

“It

was a great night!”

Start Early With your budget in mind, Stephanie advises all brides to “start early! Especially if you don’t make decisions quickly and have to sleep on them.” “It is never too early to start looking for your wedding gown”, adds Jennifer. You should begin

Know what you want “First, congratulate yourself with a mimosa! Then, do a little bit of research on Pinterest or in the NOLA Wedding Guide to see what styles initially catch your eye”, says Melissa of The Bridal Boutique by MaeMe. Before heading off to your appointment, it’s important to figure out what kind of dress you want— the style, shape, color and more. Be sure to consider what season you’re getting married in, the venue and even the time of day, as these are all key factors into choosing the best gown for your wedding day. Don’t forget to bring photos to the first appointment to give your consultant an idea of how you wish to look! Find your fit When shopping for your wedding dress, it is important to find the right fit! The right wedding gown accentuates your best areas and distracts from your less-thanperfect regions. Don’t let magazines and websites force you to believe that only one style is your best option. Owner of Southern Bridal, Jennifer, says, “most times it depends on the bride’s personality not just their body type. Some brides love to show off their curves so, in that case, we would recommend fit and flare, mermaid, or trumpet style gowns. For the bride that doesn’t want to accentuate their body we might recommend an A-line or ball- gown style wedding dress.” According to Stephanie, “with the right fit, structure and fabric, STYLE ME PRETTY > 82

most styles can work for any body type. As women, we tend to be very critical about certain areas of our bodies and want to cover up, which isn’t always necessary. Bottom line is, if you feel great, you can rock any style you want!” Melissa adds, “Brides are beautiful. Every shape. Every size. As consultants, we offer our expert opinion when helping to select a gown for each bride, but we do not lump all brides with similar body shapes into the same dress style category. Instead, we let the bride see how she feels in different dresses, and go with the gown that makes the bride feel most beautiful.” Keep an open mind Although the internet is helpful, sometimes it can make choosing the right gown overwhelming! With millions of gowns, it can add stress to finding the right dress. But, don’t fret! These wedding experts have you covered. “Many things found on Pinterest are not available locally, so we use images of dresses as a jumping off point—an “inspiration” board, to let the stylist get a grasp for the bride’s

style,” says Melissa. “Sometimes brides are set on a certain designer, but don’t realize that there are overlapping elements across all designers. If the bride loves a certain detail in one designer, we show her that detail in a similar gown in our boutique.”

S

tephanie adds, “We cannot stress this enough! Especially, if the style you thought you wanted, ends up not working for you. When this happens, it can be very disheartening to a bride who has a set-vision. If you keep your options open and listen to your stylist’s suggestions, you may fall in love with something you never thought possible.” Jennifer agrees, “Your perfect wedding gown could be something you never would have imagined.” She adds, “Be open to suggestions when trying to find the right wedding dress. Try anything on even if it is out of your comfort zone.” For brides that are uncertain, Melissa wants you to know that it’s okay. “If a bride comes into the boutique and is still unsure, we start

too many opinions can make the entire process of finding a gown that much more difficult. Stephanie adds, “Overly opinionated or pushy entourages can deter a bride’s focus and make her lose sight of herself and her vision for the day.”

At Bustles and Bows, Stephanie and her team of stylists “will pull all different silhouettes and fabrics for a bride to try on. This will help us get a better understanding for what works on their body and what they like on themselves.”

Melissa recommends, “Bringing someone who will give honest feedback, but be s u p portive. We often have brides who bring their best friend, their mom, and maybe another bridesmaid or family member. We do encourage limiting the party to 3 guests. Too many people and opinions c a n b e ove rwhelming. Some brides prefer to shop alone, and our staff of stylists are more than happy to be their support system. By surrounding yourself with a positive group of people, you’ll be comfortable and confident while trying on wedding gowns!”

“Your perfect wedding gown could be something you never would have imagined!”

Don’t bring an entourage Weddings are an exciting time and it’s one that, naturally, you want to share with family and friends. However, it is important to remember that this is your day and your gown! When choosing your group, be very selective with who you choose to bring with you to your appointment. Aim for an optimistic party! “Positive reinforcements are always great,” says Jennifer. Having

Glynn and I crossed paths nearly ten years after attending the same middle school. While working on an event in Chicago, Glynn sent me a private Facebook message. He insisted on getting together the night I returned home. We began dating shortly after! Glynn proposed to me in December 2014 at my very last game as an NFL cheerleader for the New Orleans Saints. It was the Christmas game and Glynn had been coordinating for months with the Saintsation’s director. None of my teammates knew what was about to happen when Santa walked on the field after the game ended. We were posing in our very last team picture together with ‘Santa Claus’. Afterwards, Santa ran around to the front row and knelt down on one knee in front of me! I was so shocked; I think my mouth hit the

floor. Although I was speechless, my teammates were screaming from excitement. I, of course, said ‘Yes’!

Wedding planning was hectic at times, and always knew I wanted a yearlong engagement because of the planning. It allowed me to pace myself and not get too overwhelmed. I’d been dreaming about my wedding for my whole life so it was beyond excited to see everything come to life!

M

y favorite part of the day was when the doors of the church opened and I could see my groom waiting at the end of the aisle for me. We decided not to do a first look. We kept everything a secret from one another - to the dress to the makeup to the shoes. As my dad and I rode to the church, the driver told us that he’d never seen a bride so excited. The anticipation had been building all day. I didn’t communicate with Glynn at all. I wanted to hold onto that moment of first seeing him at the alter forever. Spending the entire night with my handsome groom by my side will always be the sweetest memory. However, the most memorable for me would have to be all the dancing. During the second line, the DJ played “Crunk” and I found myself in the middle of the dance floor with my Saintsation sisters doing the traditional touchdown sideline routine. We all had a blast cutting a rug!

“I can’t explain how much I love to dance!”

ongratulations! You’re engaged! Now the planning for your wedding begins. Between alterations, creating the perfect wedding menu and juggling all of your pre-wedding tasks, you can be left feeling overwhelmed and clueless as to where to start. Luckily, we’re here to help you build the foundations to your wedding day! Here are the first four must dos for the soon-to-be wed.

SET YOUR BUDGET Between the dress and tux, the food and the venue, it’s no secret that weddings can be quite expensive. As a couple, you want to cry tears of joy at your wedding not tears from being in debt because of it. It’s important to

weeknight events, Friday nights and Sundays are normally the cheapest to reserve. April through September are popular months to wed and, along with holidays, are also more expensive. SECURE THE VENUE & VENDORS Location, location, location! Deciding where the two of you would like to be married can be an overwhelming task. Your venue will influence every decision you make and the key is finding one that can best bring your vision to life! No matter your tastes, it is important to select and secure a venue far enough in advance! With your date set, venue selected and budget in mind, you can now select and secure the vendors needed for your big day!

S E T

figure out what a reasonable budget looks like for your big day. Do plenty of research to find the ballparks of what everything costs, then sit down and look at your available funds to figure out what kind of wedding you will have. In the meantime, keep tabs on your spending to prevent things from spiraling out of control later on down the road. CHOOSE THE DATE So much goes into determining a wedding date and you’ll most likely be inclined to choosing a date with a deep, personal meaning attached. From anniversaries and birthdays to holidays, and favorite seasons, choosing a date will set the tone for the rest of the planning process. Keep in mind that your date can affect your budget. Winter weddings,

GET CREATIVE Don’t forget the fun part! While it’s not necessary to choose a theme, it gives you a framework for the rest of your decisions. Do you want a winter wonderland wedding? What about something more beach chic? Deciding this will help you with your color scheme, décor and more! As a couple, it is important that you incorporate each of your personalities into the overall look of the day. For help, consider your venue, season and colors you may already have in mind. You can also start inspiration boards on Pinterest or browse through your favorite wedding blogs!

Our love story started seven years ago, in the summer of 2009. He was invited to an event I was attending, with the intention of meeting a mutual friend of ours. After viewing a few places I scheduled a tour with the Magnolia Hall in Gulfport, MS. As soon as I pulled on to the property I knew this was the place. It felt right from the moment I saw it in person, it is N O L A W E D D I N G G U I D E J U LY 2 0 1 6

everything I could have dreamed of. Once the venue was selected I moved onto the dress, I won’t give any spoilers about that, from there things have really just began falling into place. BJ I work offshore so I am gone 2 weeks at a time. I haven’t done much planning thus far, but Brittany has been pretty great with handling all the details. As the wedding gets closer I am sure she will have me a list of things to do. NWG Any advice for future couples? Brittany Always remember that being together is the most important aspect of a relationship. You can make it through anything in life as long as you lean on each other and grow together. BJ Don’t sweat the small stuff.

Brittany and BJ Our wedding and reception is at Magnolia Hall in Gulfport, MS. Our caterer is Gary Bonanno’s catering out of Mandeville, LA. Cakes will be made by Mrs. Melissa Buras (Cakes ETC.) from Carriere, MS. Our music is by Diamond Production out of Picayune, MS. Our photographer is the amazing Laken E Photography out of Madisonville, LA. Our hair artists are Blair Naquin and Samantha Brown out of Slidell, LA. Our makeup artist is Kayla Bounds out of Oxford, MS. The flowers will be done by bride’s mother.

NWG Tell us some of your wedding vendors.

EVERY

BRIDE forgets

The Rings Seal your rings in a special bag and put one person in charge of guarding them until the start to the ceremony. Do not allow your ring bearers to carry your real rings down the aisle. Put a pair of “fake” bands on the ring pillow and keep the real ones in a safe place.

Freshen Up (in between the ceremony and reception) Don’t forget to freshen up AFTER you walk down the aisle. This is the first time that you will be greeting most of your guests, so you’ll want to look your absolute best. Take a minute to freshen up your makeup and have a breath mint before the reception. Hotel Plans Call the hotel to let them know how late you plan on checking in that night. Remind them that it’s your wedding day (so they may have champagne or assorted goodies waiting for your arrival). Once your overnight bags are packed, enlist a friend to take them over to the hotel.

Pack comfy shoes You’ll want (and need!) a beat up pair of sneakers or favorite flip flops to change into as the night wears on. Designate someone to make sure that they are at the reception location. You’ll thank them later!

Vendor Tips (in envelopes) Put each vendor’s CASH tip into a separate envelope and seal it up. Make sure to include the name of the company and the vendor on the outside to ensure proper delivery. Throw a rubber band around the stack and pass it off to a trusted friend or your wedding planner who can make sure these important players get their much-deserved thanks. Drink water It’ll do wonders for your spirit and your complexion. And you won’t feel dehydrated, tired, or worn. The only downside? You may have to spend a few more minutes in the bathroom. Avoid Honeymoon Hassles If you’re leaving for your honeymoon the morning after your wedding, call the airline the morning of your wedding to be sure there are no changes in your flight plans (or sign up for daily text alerts). Make sure your boarding passes and passports are tucked safely away in your luggage. Ten Minutes Alone After the ceremony, be SURE to take some time to be alone with your new husband. As soon as you re-enter your wedding, you’ll be pulled in a million different directions. So savor this moment of new marital bliss. Even if it’s for just 10 minutes—it’ll probably be the best 10 minutes of the whole day.

DRESS to

The thing that makes the Ball Gown Wedding Dress, a.k.a, the “Fairy-Tale wedding gown” a truly idyllic style is its flattering adherence to practically any body type. Usually matched with fitted bodices, these dresses flare out from the hips, providing just the right amount o f s e n s a t i o n a l a n d over-the-top glamour. A fitted waist works best for this design, and petite body types may find these dresses a bit overpowering for their small frames. However, if high drama and spellbinding impact are what you’re striving for on the big day, you can’t go wrong with this dress!

The Trumpet Gown, like the Mermaid, hugs the body and really emphasizes the shape. However, the Trumpet dress is easier to walk in as it is slightly fuller and flares higher on the leg. If you’re not the most graceful of brides but still want the sleek, sexy look that the mermaid gown provides, the trumpet gown is your best option.

PRETTY

The Modified A-Line features a skirt that slips lightly past the hips and gradually flares to the hem, forming an “A shape. Slightly less forgiving than the A-Line Wedding dresswhich flatters most body types-the modified A-line fits more snugly against the body. Petite women love this dress because of its elongating qualities and ultimate figure flattery!

The Sheath Gown is made to fit close to the body, with little accoutrement. Usually falling to just around the knees or lower thighs, this gown is especially great for summer weddings, but can also be great for the fall. Its basic column-like design makes it easy to dress up or down and accessories like satin sashes can be easily added to cinch the waist and accentuate most figures.

The Mermaid is snugly fit through the bodice, down through the hips, all the way to the knees before flaring out at about the mid or lower calf. This curvehugging gown is certain to show off all the right parts of the female form. Hourglass figures or women with athletic, boyish body types will love this dress, but petite women may find that it makes them appear shorter. If you are fit but buxom, this sexy gown is for you!

To Sit or Not to Sit Choosing the best dinner service for your wedding

Great food can make your wedding unforgettable and having the right food for your reception is just as important as the way in which you serve it! Whether you envision a fancy three-course meal or southern-fare served buffet style, we’ll look at the pros and cons of each to help you decide what’s best for your big day!

W

ith all of the decisions to be made while planning your wedding, one of the most important concerns your reception cuisine. Great food can make your wedding unforgettable and having the right food for your reception is just as important as the way in which you serve it! Whether you envision a fancy three-course meal or southern-fare served buffet style, we’ll look at the pros and cons of each to help you decide what’s best for your big day!

112

BUFFET PROS Best suited for 60-100 guests, buffets are perfect for the casual couple looking for a relaxing reception. Typically less expensive than a seated dinner, a buffet can help you trim the fat from your wedding budget! In a buffet-style dinner service fewer servers are needed, as guests primarily help themselves. Buffets also satisfy picky-eaters, as guests have the benefit of choosing from a variety of options. If you’d like to have more freedom to eat, mix and mingle then a buffet-style dinner service is for you!

N O L A W E D D I N G G U I D E J U LY 2 0 1 6

N O L AW E D D I N G G U I D E .C O M

Cons While you may save money on your wait-staff, your food costs will likely increase. Guests are free to serve themselves, which means they’ll eat more and your reception will require larger quantities of food to meet their needs. Each table will also have to sit tight before heading to the buffet, then wait in line before receiving their food, which will shift the mood of your celebration. This will also take a considerable amount of time, leaving guests with slightly more control over your wedding reception itinerary. SIT-DOWN DINNER PROS Best suited for 100-300 guests, a plated sit-down dinner is arguably the most elegant and traditional dining option. Unlike a buffet-style dinner service, the caterer will know exactly how much food to purchase and prepare since each meal is pre-selected. Also, all

guests will eat at the same time which makes it easier to organize dances, cake cutting and toasts. Selecting a plated sit-down service is beneficial to everyone, especially elderly guests and those with small children, as the trouble of getting their own food is eliminated. If formality suits your tastes, then a plated sitdown dinner service may be the best option for your reception. Cons While you may save money on the food costs, plated dining requires a much larger wait-staff. This, along with having the prettiest linens and china, makes a plated sit-down dinner most expensive. With a limited menu, picky-eaters may become disgruntled which means you’ll have to spend even more time drafting the perfect seating arrangements. Written By Tayla Young

He popped the question on Valentine’s Day! So cliché, I know. It’s actually a funny story. We made a road trip from Bradenton to Vegas. We made a quick stop in Albuquerque for the night before heading over to Texas. I had made plans to go on a hot air balloon ride during sunset. It just happened to be Valentine’s Day. Mark had been carrying the ring in his pocket all that time and he thought what’s a better place to propose than 1,000 ft. in the air!

T

he planning was short and stressful, especially being long distance! I managed to make some good friends in New Orleans on my first trip to the city and I got everything squared away for the big day because of them. sometimes

I loved the carriage ride to Jackson Square. As soon as I sat on the carriage with my brother and little sister the excitement finally hit me. The walk towards him was very emotional for me and I had chills all over. My brother walking me down the aisle, my favorite song being played by an amazing harpist and my future husband standing in front of me was something I will never forget.

“I had been cool & collected all day!”

My most memorable moment, though, was most assuredly when we shared our first kiss as husband and wife!

in the

MOMENT An unplugged wedding is one in which all guests are required to turn off all cell phones, cameras, and video recorders. As the husband of a professional wedding videographer, I have heard my wife scream out in frustration on many occasions while editing her weddings. As I enter her work area, she would invariably show me the source of her pain. As the bride and groom share their first kiss as husband and wife and turn to make their way down the aisle, the crowd is cheering, the bride is smiling ear to ear, and the couple is elated as electricity fills the room. My wife’s camera is perfectly positioned to capture every beautiful detail of their celebratory walk down the aisle. It is a magical, once in a lifetime moment. And then it happens - a woman steps out of the congregation into the aisle, completely blocking the view of my wife’s hi definition state of the art video camera. With her $50 video camera in hand, the woman shakily begins filming. My wife, who was carefully chosen and paid by the bride and

N O L AW E D D I N G G U I D E .C O M

groom due to her expertise, now has a beautiful shot of the back of the woman as the bride and groom make their way down the aisle. As the guest backs her way down the aisle in front of the bride and groom, she only stops when she bumps into my wife’s tripod and camera. “Oh, excuse me,” she says smiling directly into the camera as the bride and groom walk past, in the background. The moment is gone forever. I have seen it happen too many times to count. Frustration ensues. Are You Really There? There have also been many moments where a smiling bride on the altar will turn to make contact with her family and friends only to find them all staring at the viewfinders of their cameras, video cameras, and cell phones. They are all eager to capture the ceremony on their various devices. The various beeps and chirps from the devices are easily heard in the hushed atmosphere of the ceremony. The guests are all attending the ceremony, but are they really present?

U

nplugged weddings are growing in popularity as more and more brides seek to truly connect in a meaningful way with their family and friends during their weddings. As the world grows more and more connected through the use of technology, we are also becoming less and less present as our attention is diverted from real world situations. A wedding ceremony is an intimate time of love when guests should seek to be fully invested in the moment as opposed to their viewfinders. Rather than attempting to document every detail of the event, enjoy the event. Be present, smell the air, notice the little things, live the moment in real time.

Uncle Bob Wedding industry insiders even have a name for the aggressive amateur photographer getting in the way at weddings: Uncle Bob. Uncle Bob has ruined many professional wedding photos with the flash from his camera, kneeling in the aisle and blocking the view of the vows, and even standing on pews. The professional photographer is busy attempting to do the job he was paid to do and often runs into very awkward situations with Uncle Bob. It is not the photographer’s job to act as a referee and call out obvious intrusions on his workspace. This is the beauty of the unplugged wedding. Getting the Message Across Very elegant signage can be displayed prior to your ceremony-advising guests of your wishes. Indie invitation designer Lenore Tucker-MacLeod from A Small Bird offers the following:

moment to put your cameras away, Jody and Steven have requested that no photos be taken during the ceremony today — thank you so much for your understanding. The ceremony will begin shortly. Share Your Photos Should you decide to have an unplugged wedding, make sure that you share a few images with your guests within a couple days of the wedding — for a Saturday wedding, Monday or Tuesday is ideal. You can share them via email, your wedding website, or Facebook. Speak with your photographer beforehand to make sure that this is possible. Sharing even five wedding pictures with your guests so soon after the wedding is a way of saying thank you for abiding by your wishes. As soon as all your wedding photos are available, make prints to include with each thank you card. If possible, also make wedding photos available to guests online.

“Speak with your photographer...”

Also, your officiate can make an announcement prior to the start of your ceremony advising guests of your wishes. Here are some examples taken from Offbeat Bride readers:

2 At my best friend’s wedding, the rabbi asked the bride to turn around and face the audience after her parents walked her to the alter. At this time he said, “Everyone, get the photo you really want now, because we ask that your cameras remain off for the remainder of the ceremony.”

Tech Geeks By no means am I suggesting that unplugged weddings are for everyone. Admittedly, these days, asking someone to part with their cell phone or camera is like asking them to cut off a part of their body. If you are a bride on a budget that has chosen a smaller photography package, you may be counting on getting some pictures from your guests. If you have mailed your invites via email, have a wedding website and would like your wedding tweeted in real time, then unplugged is not for you. It is simply an alternative to what has become the norm in the wedding industry.

3 Good evening! It is my pleasure to welcome you to the wedding of Name and Name. Please take a moment to silence any cell phones or other noisy electronics. If you would also take a

DECIDE ON

WHAT YOU WA N T

First, l o o k through the NOLA Wedding Guide photographer section and begin contacting each photographer based on the research that you have conducted. “Clients should research a photographer first, to confirm that they are a reputable professional, and secondly, to determine whether they shoot in a style that they are comfortable with,” says Chuck Billiot of Billiot Photography and Video. This needs to take place before you set up an appointment with them. Your research should consist of checking out their online albums and blogs. The photographer’s individual personality and style is definitely something that will set them apart from the rest. Secondly, set up appointments with the photographers that you are impressed with. Always make sure that they are available on your wedding date before setting up the appointment. At the appointment, communicate to the photographer your thoughts and wishes for your wedding photos. Let them know exactly what you want to receive at the end of the day. “If you are looking for something specific to be photographed on your wedding day, let the photographer know what you want and ask if they can deliver. An experienced photographer will capture all the important moments, but may have a different angle on the way you picture it. If it’s important to you, be specific,” says Stewart Johnson of On Location Photography. Having your specific requests also added to the contract is always a plus and reiterates your wishes. Work with your photographer to make a list of requested shots, as well as group and couples shots. If you communicate to the

140

photographer the importance of a particular shot or shots, the professional wedding photographer will deliver. Professional wedding photographers have three different and distinct approaches. The three approaches are:

Photojournalistic approach Photojournalism is one of today’s most popular styles of wedding photography. The primary goal is to tell a unique story of your wedding, including the nerves, anxiety, laughter, tears and anticipation. It’s more than the specific poses, but strives to document the emotions and energy. Traditional approach The traditional approach is definitely considered the formal photography and consists of those posed pictures with your family, bridesmaids and friends. This is the oldest form of wedding photography and incorporates a handful of portraits to formal groupings and table combination pictures. “Traditional shots are what most people expect to see, posed family and bridal party shots before and after the ceremony, important moments during the ceremony…the bride and groom looking at each other at the alter, the ring exchange and the first kiss,” says Johnson. A good combination is the traditional approach to get the formal feel to the pictures, but also incorporating the photojournalistic photography to capture some of the candid emotions surrounding the wedding. Artistic approach The artistic approach includes everything from specifically colored images to soft-focus lenses. The key to the artistic approach is to use it to highlight a particular moment and make the wedding album a visual story of your special day. You need to decide what approaches you feel works best for what you’re looking for, based on the research you’ve conducted. If you like more than one approach

don’t be afraid to incorporate different approaches because at the end of the day you want to tell your own unique wedding story while still allowing the photographer artistic freedom. ASK, ASK, ASK Make sure to ask the questions that will get you what you’re looking for. Some helpful questions are: How long have you been in business? What’s your style? Can you get the following shots? What can we expect the day of? Do you do more than one wedding a day? Do you bring backup equipment? How long will it take to see my images? Will you make it easy for my friends and family to order reprints? How long do I have to make up my mind about which pictures I want and how many? Will you use film or digital? Do you give any guarantees on your services and photographs? Will you be shooting my pictures personally? “There are many questions you may want to ask a prospective photographer, however you need to be comfortable with the photographer. No stress leads to better smiles and great pictures,” says Johnson. Wedding photography is perhaps the one aspect of weddings that is most misunderstood. Make sure that you do your research and decide upon the photographer that can give you the best style suited for your wedding. “I believe that most professional photographers can offer any style that the bride and groom requests. However, some {photographers} are more specialized,” says Billiot. Wedding photography is one of the most important investments in your wedding day, so make sure that you have selected the right photography match and you’ll have great memories for years to come.

Shelby Lynn Reilly and Daniel Swear

S

D

Daniel proposed in November 2014. He wanted to go to ‘our spot’, which is the little pond by the Peristyle in City Park. Daniel took me there only a few months ago, so I didn’t expect anything the night of the proposal. There was actually a wedding rehearsal in City Park that night. Daniel insisted on walking across the Peristyle in the middle of everything! I was practically running through because I didn’t want to be rude! Daniel finally got my attention long enough to pop the question. He had a photographer waiting to capture the moment. I was in complete shock and couldn’t wait to share the news with everyone!

W

edding planning wasn’t really bad at all. I think my mom was more stressed out than I was. My nerves didn’t kick in until I realized how many last minute details we still needed to complete!

I loved being able to share my big day with all of our family and friends. The Balcony was such a beautiful place for our reception and the Bucktown All-Stars made sure we danced the night away. Daniel said his favorite part of the day was being able to get ready with his best guys, and how it was nice to relax for a while before everything got started.

“It definitely gave me a good laugh!”

The Best Man lost my wedding band right before the ceremony! He only had my engagement ring and Daniel’s wedding band. The bridal party was frantically searching for it, and luckily found it in the mud right outside of the church. I didn’t know any of this until two days later!

With Fall comes blazing shades of reds and oranges and hues of yellow and brown. But which is right for you? Love red? Warm it up a bit to get Marsala! This rich, red-brown, earthy shade complements any skin tone. Tra d e yo u r t y p i c a l o ra n g e fo r mango! This lighter shade is softer and more appealing while still staying true to the Fall color scheme. Mix it up with mustard! This vibrant shade of yellow allows you to have a pop of color and is perfect for any Fall wedding. Go green with a subtle sage! This cool and soothing shade will pair perfectly with your bridal party. You can also incorporate your favorite color

148

even if it’s not a traditional autumn hue! Feeling blue? Deepen the shade to navy for a very elegant, flattering Fall bridesmaid gown. Plum is the perfect purple substitute. This gorgeous tone adds both glamour and sophistication to your big day! Every girl likes a little pink, right? Shift the hue from ballerina to salmon. This neutral shade adds a luxe feel to any dress style and is perfect for the Fall. As you can see, you can essentially select any color and alter the shade to find your perfect Bridesmaid dress!

WHEN TO

SPLURGE SAVE WHEN TO

Knowing when to save and when to spend freely is a tricky business, especially when it comes to weddings and eager brides. Here is a quick list to help you decide which things are worth the money.

SPLURGE Wedding Dress If it’s the “dream dress,” it’s worth spending a few extra bucks. Looking good is feeling good. Shoes You’ll be on your feet most of the day, buying comfy shoes is a must. Bridal Bouquet Spend on the flowers that you really want and love. Centerpieces sets the style and mood for the reception. Appetizers & Entrée If there is one thing peoplewillremember, it’s the food. Wedding Cake The same with your bouquet and dress, don’t settle for filling or flavor you won’t enjoy. Music & Lighting don’t underestimate the power of lighting and the right tunes. These things set the mood for the rest of the night.

SAVE Wedding Veil It’s understandable to over spend for your dress, but a veil? Makeup Professional makeup can sometimes make you appear as an entirely different person; it’s okay to be yourself on your wedding day. Flower Girl Bouquet She doesn’t even need a bouquet, give her some rose petals and she’s good to go. Ceremony Chairs no one notices

Trust me, the chairs.

Dessert Isn’t this what a cake is for? Wedding Favors These aren’t something to stress over. A donation, or even if they’re DIY will work perfectly!

Photography This is a pretty obvious one. You’ll be looking at these photographs for years to come.
