O OCTOBER 2016

W Eto our Lwinter CO M E issue Hello.

Welcome to the October Issue of the Nola Wedding Guide Louisiana. In my six years of publishing this magazine, I can honestly say that this is the best issue that we have ever produced.

Our stunning and inspirational photo editorials and informative articles combine to make this a bride’s fantasy come true. All of the pertinent information that one could possibly need to plan a dream wedding is located within these pages. We hope that you enjoy reading it as much as we enjoyed producing it.

They feature some of the most beautiful images that I have ever seen; they will simply take your breath away! A huge thank you to everyone involved in creating these shoots....Bravo An extra huge thank you to the following people who went above and beyond in the creation of this magazine, EFMDesigns, Stephany Geiling-Cure, Tayla Young, Saleha Wadhwa and Shea McCord.

In New Orleans, outdoor ceremonies are as common as roast beef poboys. Our sub tropical climate keeps our weather pleasant yearround and contributes to making our city an ideal backdrop for your special day. However, an outdoor ceremony can sometimes be tricky to plan. Knowing some basic information such as which months are the rainiest, the average temperature for each month and what time the sun sets, may mean the difference in planning for a spring wedding or holding off until the fall to get your ideal climate conditions. Also, knowing the sunset times can be crucial for getting your wedding photos just right. We have put together an almanac to assist you in planning your outdoor wedding ceremony.

There Goes All Your Money! He popped the question and you said “Yes!” now comes the hard part— planning your big day. By Saleha Mehr

edding planning can be a rollercoaster of emotions and filled with plenty of drama! Who do you invite? Who is going to be in your bridal party? Where are you going to have the wedding? How much is all this going to cost? You want your wedding to be a memorable event, not the affair that costs you an arm, a leg and your sanity. Here are Nola Wedding Guide’s tips to budgeting your dream wedding:

Who’s invited? Soon after a couple gets engaged, they are flooded with inquiries of when and where the wedding will be. Before even picking a venue, a couple should first narrow down how many guests will be invited. One helpful rule to narrowing down your list is: if you have not shared a meal with this person in the past two years, it is best not to invite them. It is perfectly reasonable to omit a “plus-one” invitation to guests who are not married or in a long-term relationship. You do not want to find yourself flipping through a wedding album of complete strangers. Inviting children is also optional. LET’S TALK PLANNING > 26

Venue Picking a wedding location can be quite a daunting task as there are infinite options. Before you begin researching and senselessly touring venue halls, consider a parental home, a public park with a scenic view, or a public beach. You can also consider an art gallery or a bed and breakfast –places which usually do not host weddings and therefore will not be overpriced. It will help your budget if you book one venue which will serve as both the ceremony and reception space. The time of your wedding can also help cut costs. Summer is the height of wedding season because of the agreeable weather and children being off from school. Consider booking your wedding off season, such as the months of November and January. Choosing a Friday, Sunday, or having a morning wedding can also cut your costs in half. DIY Taking on some wedding projects is great way to reduce expenses and it can be fun too! Instead of paying an exorbitant amount for invitations, go online and order customizable, printable invitations. To save paper and postage charges, have your guests RSVP on a wedding app or create a free website with a link reserve their spot. Making your own centerpieces is also another way to cut costs. Take a trip to your local arts and crafts store and look for items on sale that you can use for decoration pieces. Grab a glue gun, rally your bridesmaids and family members, and bring out your inner Martha Stewart! Having a photo booth in your wedding has become a popular and pricey trend.

AMANI ALLEN and ROBENSON BONTEMPS

I was born and raised in New Orleans, but my husband, Robenson, moved here from Haiti when he was 7 years old. We

met each other in a music elective class in college. I noticed him as he was walking out of class and was instantly drawn to him. The next day, I walked in to find him in my usual seat, so I started a conversation about tennis and soccer, two of my favorite sports. From this conversation, I learned that he was a fan as well and even played before. I gave him my number, just as a friend, but if Robenson ever told you the story he would say it was because of his charm. That day was the start of something special that even I did not see coming. AMANI ALLEN and ROBENSON BONTEMPS On September 21, 2012 we went on our first official date. That day was one of the greatest. He was incredibly sweet and treated me like a queen. From this day on, he always had a new adventure planned for us.We were together almost three years before he proposed and I remember it like it was yesterday. Robenson proposed one night while we were walking along the river. It was very sweet. We had recently spoken about marriage and it was something we were both looking forward to. We wanted time to plan our wedding so we gave ourselves a year to do so. The days leading up to wedding were surreal and extremely busy. From the planning to the wedding rehearsal and dinner, a lot was going on. On the morning of our wedding, preparations started early. My entire wedding party ate breakfast together and then the makeup artist began dolling us up, one by one. After everyone was fully dressed, pictures were taken and we all headed over to the church.

O

n May 28th, 2016 Robenson and I officially tied the knot and a day I will ever forget. I walked in with my father to “ For You” by Kenny Lattimore. The ceremony was beautiful, short and simple. We walked out of the church and were given champagne to toast as newlyweds. Our reception, held in the grand ballroom of the Chateau Golf and Country Club, was amazing! As our guests made their way onto the dance floor, Robenson and I went around the greet everyone. Half-way through the reception, the cake was cut and the bouquet was tossed. With a drink in hand, I danced the night away. Of course it wouldn’t be a New Orleans wedding if we didn’t have a Second Line brass band. We even had personalized umbrellas for all our guests. On this day, not only did I get to marry my best friend, but our family and friends were there to witness and celebrate the beginning our union. Once the festivities were over my husband and I spent our wedding night at Le Meridien Hotel. Due to our busy schedules, our honeymoon was temporarily postponed. We are planning going to St. Vincent soon to enjoy the clear blue waters and beautiful sandy beach.

“With a drink in hand, I danced the night away. ”

the EXCLUSIVE

THE

NOLABRIDE

INSIDER

My name is Casey, and I am the heartbeat behind The NOLA Bride. I am an offbeat wedding planner who provides an array of services that help couples plan a box-busting, budget-friendly, personalized wedding. I offer various service levels with price points that jive with every type of couple’s needs. My personal mission is to let your personalities shine through every detail, no matter how eccentric they may be! What inspired you to venture into ‘out-ofthe-box’ wedding planning? Casey Mills: As a newbie bride, I never dreamed that I would feel ashamed of my wedding funds or feel weird for wanting my dogs by my side. But there I was, feeling helpless and completely alone. After I realized how exhausting and disheartening the planning process was, I started to blog. I knew in my gut that there were other brides out there like me with no place to start, who were stressing to find affordable vendors, and dreaming of something outside of the blasé wedding standard. Then, after completely rocking my dog-

friendly, French Quarter Hallo-wedding on a budget, I decided to mastermind my experience and skills, and I created an affordable, zero judgment planning resource for other New Orleans couples! Is it possible to have a unique wedding and keep within budget? Casey Mills: Absolutely! But let’s be real, it is a balancing act. You have to look outside the box for ideas. Look past the general wedding industry options – including venues and vendors. You also have to be willing to compromise. And I don’t mean compromise your day. But you need to nail down what’s important to you and what you’d be willing to forego if you had to. How do you guide a bride in choosing a theme for their wedding? Casey Mills: Pinterest makes everything hard, doesn’t it? F.O.M.O., fear of missing out, is a real thing. It can be tricky for couples to narrow down what they like because there are so many ridiculously creative ideas out there.

N O L AW E D D I N G G U I D E .C O M

Ultimately, I try to hone in on the feel they’re going for with their day. No detail is too small. Then, I help them narrow down the season they want their wedding. We also keep their budget front and center in the decision making process. What are some tips for couples who want to plan a unique wedding on their own? Casey Mills: Decide on a budget and commit to it. Once you have a general outline of what you want to spend in each category, your decision-making will become much easier. After that, embrace you! Your wedding is about YOU – celebrating your love, your relationship, and your journey as a couple. And while I am a huge advocate for ensuring that your family and friends have a killer time as well, I also fully believe that you should be 100% comfortable with what you choose to do for your wedding. And when in doubt, you can always rely on the ever enchanting, always unapologetically herself, city of New Orleans for some guidance. (I know I do!) Think about it. What are we better known for down here than encouraging individuality, embracing creativity, and parading our crazy down the street? It’s the come-as-you-areand-march-to-the-beat-of-your-own-drum mentality that makes this city so incredible and that is exactly what should inspire you to plan a wedding that is completely yours.

On February 22, 2014, we went to a mud run, which is when a group of about 50 boats ride together. After riding for a little while, the boat stopped. Bryce told me the boat would not start up again, so I stood up, turned around, and walked to the front of the boat. As I turned around, there was Bryce: down on one knee and holding a beautiful ring. What a surprise! Instantly, I started crying because I knew exactly what he was about to ask me. Surrounded by onlookers, he professed his love for me and asked me to be his wife. After catching my breath, I said “Yes!”

fter a little over a year of wedding planning, we bought our first home together, and we said, “I do,” on April 25, 2015. That was the happiest day of our lives! The wedding was everything we wanted and more. To have all of our family and friends celebrating with us was amazing. We were on cloud nine. Our first year of marriage was such a dream, and we were so happy. We enjoyed living in our home as a newly wed couple, and we were ready to start the next chapter of our lives, which meant starting a family. Here we are today, expecting our first child on March 15, 2017. We can’t wait to meet our child!

ASPEN STEIB and BRANDON MURPHY

Brandon and I met at a charity event for Big Brothers and Big Sisters. I organized the event and Brandon attended as we work for the same company. He bought a painting from the silent auction in order to catch my attention. We did not actually go on a date until almost a year later. We ended up dating for two years . In December 2014, Brandon proposed on the balcony of Muriel’s , a restaurant overlooking Jackson Square. It was very exciting. He got down on one knee, told me he loved me, and asked if I would spend the rest of my life with him. A stranger recorded the proposal and all of the onlookers cheered.

My parents hold a large party to celebrate New Year’s every year, so it was easy to carry on that tradition with our wedding ceremony and reception. Our wedding was a destination wedding. Family from near and far traveled to be a part of the wedding. Brandon’s family and friends came in from South Carolina. My friends from my time living in D.C., NYC, and France were also in attendance. We also had friends travel from as far as Saudi Arabia, California, and Chicago. Because our friends and family travelled from all over to celebrate with us and , we decided to have a classy Mardi Gras sparkle and New Year’s Eve theme. We wanted our guests to have the best of New Orleans and family traditions.

“We wanted our guests to have the best of New Orleans & family traditions.”

O

n the day of the wedding, a family heirloom rosary was pinned under my dress as a tribute to my grandmother. My mother also gave me a crystal rosary for my brooch bouquet. I walked down to the aisle to “ At Last” by Etta James. Brandon and I choose Elton John’s “ Can You Feel the Love Tonight” for our first dance because it reminded us of The Lion King. The Lion King inspired us to go on a honeymoon in Africa. After our first dance, we had a fun performance to a medley of songs which included:“ Grease Lightining”, MC Hammer, Soulja Boy, and Micheal Jackson’s “ Black and White.” Sticking to our theme, our guests had light up beads with our custom logo. We also had a cake topper that was made in our image. Our wedding was finished off with a huge display of fireworks.

Since I was involved in picking out the setting of the ring, much to Thoms’ dislike, making the engagement a surprise was difficult. The day of the engagement, Thom went to pick up the ring from the jeweler. I was waiting impatiently in the Quarter, knowing that Thom would be meeting me again, maybe with or without the ring. When he arrived at the coffee shop, he bluntly asked, “so, do you want your ring?” I quickly replied yes, beside myself with excitement, but also thinking, “this is my proposal?!?” Upon opening the box, all that was inside was a treasure map. Thom told me if I wanted the ring, I would have to find it. We strolled through the Quarter the rest of the afternoon, shopping for Mardi Gras clothes. I was frustrated with Thom’s antics, and later met with Thom’s brother Timmy and his partner Kenny. Kenny mentioned wanting to go shopping around Jackson Square, so the stroll headed that direction. While walking by the St Louis Cathedral, mass was just ending. I stood watching the procession of people, and Thom yelled to Timmy, “Hey, look at this shirt Becky bought today.” When Becky turned around Thom was on one knee, not in fact getting a shirt out of the shopping bag, but rather her mother’s original engagement ring box with her engagement ring inside. He asked, “Will you marry me?” Which I immediately said yes, and then began jumping up and down after I got a real look at the ring through my tears. And if Thom somehow knew the timing, the church bells started to chime when he put the ring on her finger.

I

love so many things about Thom. He is by far the funniest person I have ever met. Our very first phone call he had me in tears. And when we are laughing so hard he weezes in a way that makes me laugh even more. Thom’s generosity is something that equally brings to me to tears, but for completely different reasons. He is very private about his generous acts, but I do catch him from time to time. When we were first dating he picked up the check for a couple who were in their 90s. He would never admit he did it, and I think that defeats the purpose of the generosity for him. I’ve also witnessed him buy groceries for a family in need. This coupled with his compassion for people makes me honored to be with him. On our wedding day I’m looking forward to many things. Also doing a second line has been a dream since the first one Our friends & I experienced. But family all being ultimately saying my vows to Thom is together is at the what I am the most top of the list” excited about. I feel there is no stronger declaration of love then telling the person you love in front of everyone you care about that you vow your love to them, through good times and bad, until death parts you.

THE

NOLASPRAYTANS You’ve gone through your checklist of wedding to-dos and must-haves and the last thing to be completed is getting that picture-perfect tan! We know you may be nervous, after all, wearing white can be daunting, but don’t worry Diana Tefft, of Nola Spray Tans, has you covered. We’ve enlisted Diana’s expert advice to give you the ultimate guide to the glow. What should I do before my appointment? Diana Tefft Preparation is very important! Prior to your appointment, preferably the night before, exfoliate your skin using an exfoliating glove, washcloth or oil-free body scrub. Pay extra attention to rougher skin areas like knees, elbows and feet. Also, be sure to remove any unwanted body hair. Pedicures and waxing should be done 1 day prior to getting your spray tan and on the day of your appointment make sure you do not apply lotions, body sprays, perfumes or deodorant. When is the perfect time to get my spray tan? Diana Tefft When preparing for your wedding, it is best to get your spray tan 2-3

days before your special day. The tan would have settled into your skin by then and would be flawless for your walk down the aisle. How should I choose my shade? Diana Tefft At Nola Spray Tans, we ensure that every bride receives a consultation prior to their big day! It is during this consultation that the proper shade will be chosen, based on the bride’s skin tone. We also recommend doing a trial run to make sure we get the color just right for our bride-to-be. How long will my tan last? Diana Tefft The spray tan will last 7-10 days. Once you take your first shower, the cosmetic bronzer that rests on the top layer of your skin, will be washed away leaving you with a beautiful glow.

N O L A W E D D I N G G U I D E O C TO B E R 2 0 1 6

Is there any way to preserve my tan even longer? Diana Tefft To help prolong your spray tan it is best to moisturize 2-3 times a day. Stay away from products with Mineral Oil and do not take extremely hot showers as it will fade your spray tan. At Nola Spray Tans, every bride will receive instructions on how to preserve their tan! Will it get on my dress? Dianna Tefft No, it will not get on your dress! The tan would have already been absorbed by your skin. Following your shower, you will only be left with the color – no extra residue. So don’t worry!

LAUREN

Lauren and I met through the persistence of mutual parties. Her cousin’s fiancé is a colleague of mine within the public health field. He knew that both Lauren and I were single in Washington, D.C. and thought that we would do well together—he was absolutely correct. We went on a double date, and the rest is history. Prior to us meeting in person, I googled him and did a little social media snooping. Gotta love a man with an extensive LinkedIn profile!

NWG What did you first notice about your significant other? Lauren I first noticed his style, I thought to myself how did this guy manage to coordinate a navy blue shirt and green pant so well? At first, I didn’t think he dressed himself, but I have been proven wrong as his sense of style has since continued. Ritney Immediately upon meeting Lauren, I noticed her hair. I first saw her as she was coming up the escalator of the metro. Her hair was blowing in the wind like Beyonce—no lie!

But there were far too many variables from security, to kids being everywhere, to not being able to impede the flow of walking traffic—no kneeling there. Finally, I settled on going back to where it all began. So after a night of dinner at the Hamilton, I popped the question and she said yes! Lauren Ritney decided to invite me to ͞late night dinner͟ at the restaurant in which we met and had our first date. I thought nothing of it as it was one of our frequent spots. He presented me with a Pandora necklace and crown charm stating that every King needed his Queen. After a bout of excitement, Ritney got down on one knee presenting me with a ring and asked for my hand in marriage.

NWG What do the two of you have in common? Lauren & Ritney We share a love for Louisiana’s food and culture. The Louisiana way of life is about family and hospitality. We both come from situations where our immediate families are relatively small, but we were raised to consider cousins “He presented as brothers and sisters. This me with a Pandora has helped shape our love for necklace and crown family and people in general.

charm stating that every King needed his Queen.”

NWG Describe your first date. Ritney Our first date was at a really popular restaurant in downtown Washington D.C., the Hamilton. She made me eat strange things, and I ate it and pretended to like it in order to impress her. From there we went to another place for drinks and enjoyed each other’s company. We stayed out as late as we could, but were faced with the fact that we’re both really old people trapped in the body of 20-something-year-olds. Lauren That ͞strange͟ food was edamame. It was healthy and tasty. He loved it!

NWG Tell us about the proposal. Ritney I had purchased the ring for quite some time, and some of my closest friends knew what I was up to. She had no clue. The truth is, I had several different plans for the proposal but none of them ultimately worked out. We went to a winery and horseback riding in the mountains of Virginia, but the weather was too cold and rainy to do it. Then, I planned a picnic on the national mall, but we had to change plans due to Snowpacolypse. Next came the White House Garden tour.

NWG When is your wedding? Lauren & Ritney The wedding is set for June 2017 in New Orleans at the Historic St. James African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church with the reception following in City Park.

NWG How has the planning gone so far? Lauren & Ritney Wedding planning is great! I am a Conference and Events planner by profession. The wedding industry is a bit different from the convening industry, but I will say that I have not been called a Bridezilla yet. NWG Tell us about some of your wedding vendors? Lauren & Ritney Our wedding ceremony will take place at the Historic St. James African Methodist Episcopal Church. The reception will be held at New Orleans City Park. Our engagement photographer was James Kegley. My dress is an Alvina Valenta custom couture from I Do Bridal Couture in Baton Rouge. NWG What excites you most about your future together? Lauren & Ritney Everything about the future with Lauren has me so excited. We are made for each other and push each other to become

better versions of ourselves. She is my biggest supporter, a great cook, and beautiful inside and out. I can not wait to have five or six kids running around the house, although we are still negotiating on the final number . Ritney is super ambitious about his and our (future family of 4) future. His love and kindness for people is what made me ultimately fall in love with him. I am excited to spend every day of life with a man of God, a man of family, and the man of my dreams.

we’ve made it work. Even though neither of us are perfect with our planning, we always make the best of our time that we have together! Even though we don’t see each other every day, Ritney still seems to make me feel as if I am the most important factor in his life. Don’t sweat the small stuff. The majority of things you will argue about do not matter at all. To date our biggest argument has been around washing the dishes. Thinking back, who cares? There was a dishwasher less than three feet away.

NWG Any advice for future couples? Lauren & Ritney If you love each other, you will make it work. Both Ritney and I have very demanding work travel schedules. We would often find ourselves out of town on travel than in our homes. We have something like a long distance relationship while living in the same city. It is very unique and something I know that will allow us to stand the tests of time. In the two years that we have dated

to Take Your Engagement Photos

Taking engagement photos is one of the first things on the bridal to-do list, inadvertently making it one of the most important tasks.

It is a couples’ first opportunity (as future spouses by law) to boast their love, show their couple-personality, and most importantly, set the tone for all of their future wedding events. In the grand scheme of things, engagement photos are glorified banners, letting every one know which band is coming. The choice of banners is endless, but engagement photos should reflect the personalities of the future bride and groom as a couple. Here in Louisiana, history, love and charm go together like red beans, rice and cornbread, giving even the most unique, southern couples plenty of options.

let’s talk PLANNING

Grand Isle. Go as far south as south goes in Louisiana, and you’ll discover Grand Isle. Nestled about two and a half hours outside of the Big Easy, a couple can reap some big benefits from this small island. Water loving couples will appreciate Grand Isle’s miles of white-sand beaches, one of few in Louisiana. The open area will give tons of space and opportunity to take timeless photos. The hardest decision couples may face is whether to arrive for sunset or sunrise. There’s still hope for nature-lovers who don’t quite want to feel the sand beneath their feet. Grand Isle has five different bird trails. Tanagers, brown Pelicans and a sandpiper or two may feature in a few photos, but it all adds to the southern atmosphere that Grand Isle has to offer. With hundreds of Oak trees, Grand Isle can serve as the picture-perfect backdrop for your engagement photos.

Audubon Park. If Grand Isle is just too far away, Audubon Park has some ponds and live Oak trees perfect for all engagement photos. In the heart of uptown New Orleans, Audubon Park gives couples tons of options for classic engagement photo ops. Couples can go back to the basic necessities in life and hit up the playground. A bride can flash her new diamond and her new fiancé while gleefully swinging on Audubon Park’s swing sets, as long as she waits her turn. When the playing around is done, take a break and head to Audubon’s picnic area. A nice comfortable blanket, cool trees and a well-packed lunch are really all a couple needs for a few close-knit, heartwarming engagement pictures. Audubon Park’s scenery makes it easy for couples to keep it simple and get beautiful engagement shots

by simply walking around. Follow the jogging trail and let the dozens of century-old oak trees, lagoons and the park’s natural aura do the rest. French Quarter. Few things are more quintessentially New Orleans than this historic area. For engagement photos filled with history and charm, the French Quarter is top on the list. Photo backdrops in the French Quarter are limitless, but just to name a few: The Cathedral. Walking side by side on the outside grounds of the New Orleans Cathedral can bring out the love in any couples’ eyes, making a photographer’s job more than easy. Every Louisiana couple needs a picture of themselves with this historic church blurred in the background sitting on their mantel. Horse and buggy. One of the French Quarter’s most notorious staples, and by far the most romantic, are the horses

and carriages. Couples can relax and enjoy the ambiance all while taking captivating engagement photos. Café Du Monde. French for “café of the world”, Café Du Monde offers couples a nice, quaint setting. Catch this coffee spot during some down time, and a couple can snap an engaging shot or two over beignets and coffee. Just be careful, powdered sugar can get a little messy. The streetcar. On the streetcar, outside of the streetcar, on the side of the streetcar or simply in front of the streetcar makes a New Orleans engagement photo op back drop pop. Southern Oaks Plantation. For couples that appreciate air conditioning when Louisiana’s temperature hits 100 degrees, but still want some charm and southern hospitality in their engagement photos, plantations may just be the way to go. LET’S TALK PLANNING > 136

Southern Oaks Plantation With as big a space as Southern Oaks Plantation, there are plenty of options for lovebirds to choose from. This plantation features several inside settings for engagement photos, the first of many being the foyer. CONTINUED FROM PAGE 134 Deeper into the estate sets the parlor room. The parlor room is filled with windows, mirrors, and a few cozy love seats, making it an intimate setting for prime engagement photos. A little further down the hall is the lounge room. Here, there are fewer windows, a couple love seats but just as much charm. For a little variety and maybe a little heat, Southern Oaks’ front lawn is an amazing backdrop. The manicured lawn, perfectly paved walkways and, of course, the gorgeous plantation itself, will add tons of southern decadence to any set of engagement photos. Felicity Church. After being rebuilt following a fire in 1987, Felicity Church stands to be almost 30 years old and is a historic, picturesque venue that is second to none. Built with ‘comes as you are’ ideals and named for its location on Felicity Street in the lower garden district of New Orleans, this church will inspire some of the most heart-warming, love-drenched engagement photos. This deep-rooted, nondenominational church features some floor to ceiling windows, wood floors, an indoor balcony, brick walls, lantern ceiling lights, and a spiraling, wooden staircase that gracefully shows its age. With a breeze and some nice Louisiana weather, couples can take a few adoring outside shots as well.

The entrance steps and side iron fencing, give nothing if not charm and charisma to engagement photos.

Twist

Your

Tux!

From the moment a suitor gets down on his knees to propose to the walk down the aisle, it’s all about the bride-to-be. Not wanting our beaus to feel left out, we’re giving some helpful fashion advice that will shine some light on to the groom-to-be. Ditch the rigid black tie and inject some personality into your dress code! Here are the Nola Wedding Guide’s tips to putting a twist in your tux. By Saleha Mehr

While we all love a man in a crisp, clean suit, there are ways to ensure your upcoming wedding day attire isn’t basic or the traditional black. The easiest way to add some character into your suit is by adding color. From cobalt blue, burgundy, charcoal grey, emerald green and even pink. The bolder the better! While your bride may be a vision in angelic white, you can be a vision in color.

P h o t o g r a p h e d b y M a t t h e w Fo s t e r, N e w O r l e a n s , 2 0 1 6 .

You can also modify a traditional suit by using a richer fabric such as velvet or wool. Though these two fabrics may not be for everyone, it can add a hint of unexpected elegance and old-world charm to your big day. Be sure to keep in mind the season of your wedding. Velvet or Wool might be a bit warm for summer, but impeccable for a fall or winter wedding.

For a fashion forward look, replace your suit with a leather jacket once the ceremonial part of your wedding is over. For the less adventurous groom, choosing a double-breasted suit can help differentiate your look. Shirts A simple white shirt can be quite an effortless statement piece, but you don’t have to blend in. You can opt to add color to your shirt instead of your suit. In fact, a colored shirt is one of the best ways to elevate the appearance of any suit. If you’re unsure about a bold shirt, try a softer shade such as sage or pink. It’ll make your suit pop, especially if your suit is black. Striped shirts and floral prints are also alternatives to keep in mind. Pants Your wedding day is a long day of sitting, standing, and dancing the night away. You want to be able to move with ease. When shopping for a pair of pants, make sure your waistline is not too constricting or too baggy. The material of your pants should skim your hips. For the right length, your pants should rest neatly above your shoes. Make sure your pants are tailored to perfection. Too long or too short of a length can destroy your look. To make sure your pants are well fitted, bring all your outfit pieces-- from your suit to your shoes--- to your tailor session. Separates For the groom who really wants his look to be one-of-a kind, choosing separates is the way to go. Your look can be daring and unexpected, or refined and sophisticated. It’s all up to you! A groom can opt to mix and match contrasting colors of his suit jacket and pants, or layer his looks with different fabric materials. Your look does not have to be limited to just a suit and pants. You can choose to ditch the suit and pants and opt for waistcoats, cardigans, denim, shorts and khakis. Let your imagination run wild!

your big day arrives that you’ve practiced knotting your tie! Accessories Accessories are a great way for a groom to show us his personality, a personality the bride fell in love with. From custom cufflinks, suspenders, pocket squares, personalized socks to boutonnieres, watches and eyewear. Choose accessories that will not only compliment your overall look but also add a bit of amusement to your big day. Shoes The essential finishing touch to any outfit is the right pair of shoes. The expected shoe

choice for a groom is a simple, black leather lace up shoe or a classic brogue. Over time, however, casual shoes have become a popular option as well. From Converse sneakers, chambray oxfords and suede shoes to cowboy boots, patterned slippers, and TOMS – The options are endless. To avoid any cuts and sores, make sure your shoes are broken into before your wedding date and don’t be afraid to switch things up!

Ties Ties are a great way to add a touch of fun to your look and the options are never-ending. You can go for a skinny tie accessorized with an ornamental tiepin or you can opt for a bold color to contrast your suit. Choosing a funky fabric, such as tweed, can really make a statement. At the end of the night, loosen that bow tie and let it hang loose for a more effortless look. Ties aren’t your thing? No problem! Ditch the tie all together and opt for a cravat. This neckband can give you an elegant and overall stylish look. Just ensure before

On Thanksgiving Day, the Legrand family always has a huge get together. The Legrands have a family tradition of passing around a pitcher of Poppa George’s liqueur for everyone to stir and a speech is usually made explaining the tradition for any newcomers. When Andre’s father was finished with the toast and everyone still had their glass in the air, Andre dropped to one knee and proposed to me. It was extra special being surrounded by family and close friends.

eing an Ursuline graduate allowed me the honor of being married in the National Shrine of Our Lady of Prompt Succor. It was breathtaking. The reception was easy to plan because we both knew we wanted a real New Orleans experience and what says “New Orleans” better than Pat O’Briens? Pat O’s on the River had the look we wanted and the river, GNO bridge, and river boat in the backdrop was lagniappe. Our reception was a true NOLA experience from the local band, The Top Cats, hurricanes drinks served at the door, custom made LSU baseball umbrellas used for the Second Line, and family and friends waving handkerchiefs as we danced the night away. All the fun and festivities of our reception were captured by a wedding painter. The wedding painter was a special gift from my sister and her fiancé.

“It was extra special being surrounded by family & close friends.”

Our Honeymoon in Aruba, a gift from my mother’s boss, was truly amazing. The beach was gorgeous and the views were stunning. It was great to be able to just sit back and reminisce about the wedding.

THE

CHASINGWANG When did you start baking? Kieu: I have been baking since I was a little girl---back when I thought box cake mixes were a divine invention. Professionally, I have been baking for two years. What is your favorite cake and frosting combination? Kieu: It depends on the week. My current favorite cake combination is our apple pie cake. It has layers of spiced apple cake with an ooey gooey cheesecake filling, vanilla crumble, and apple pie filling. How do I pick a cake and frosting combination that all of my guests would enjoy? Kieu: We specialize in custom cake flavors. For our clients, I always recommend that they choose one cake combination they both love. It might be a flavor they both enjoy, it might be a flavor they have never had or never seen at another wedding. Then, they can opt for a second “safe” flavor, which may be almond cake or vanilla chiffon with Chantilly cream and fruits. As far as icing goes, we have buttercream or fondant. This option narrows down to the couple’s design vision, budget, and taste preferences. But we have our ways of making both work. What has been your favorite wedding cake that you have done so far? Kieu: I love all of the wedding cakes I have prepared for various reason. One of my favorite cakes has been a painted floral cake. It was the first time I was able to combine my passion for baking and painting. What are your favorite trends when it comes to wedding deserts? Kieu: We specialize in dessert tables. With dessert tables, we always have clients that opt for trendy desserts like macarons, cupcakes, and cake pops. But to round off the tablespace, we do desserts that just make you happy and are timeless,

INSIDER such as house-made chocolate chip cookies, creme brûlée, and churros. What advice can you give to couples who are ordering their wedding cake or desserts? Kieu: I recommend couples to go to tastings, look up cake/ dessert designs that they love, choose a baker that fits what they want, and come up with a reasonable budget. I love meeting clients and one of my favorite things is watching them design their cake together. The most important thing is to just enjoy the process. How far in advance should a couple order their wedding cake? Kieu: It depends on the couple. Some couples reach out to us right when they get engaged or a year out to ensure a date is saved. We have also booked clients two months in advance if we have the date available. How long before the wedding is a cake prepared? Kieu: Our process starts with decorations. We prepare our intricate sugar pieces like flowers one week in advance. We bake our cake one day in advance to ensure it stays moist. We ice and assemble the cake the day before the wedding. If my wedding guests have an allergy, what are my cake and dessert options? Kieu: Currently, we have many nut-free cake options. However, we do use nuts in our kitchen, so we do not recommend our cakes for clients with strong nut allergies.

ell first, we celebrate! We tell our family and friends— we go out for drinks and bask in the excitement. But no, seriously, what do we do next? The last thing you’ve successfully planned was your high school graduation party! There are so many vital steps in wedding planning and you don’t want to miss a thing. After all, this day does have to be perfect. There are so many microscopic details in wedding planning that when you first begin, it can seem rather intimidating or overwhelming. Take a look at these first few steps of wedding planning! The Conversation You and your future spouse-to-be should first sit down and talk about your likes and dislikes. Bring photos to the table so you both can map out just what you may like for your big day. You can bounce ideas off of each other, but make no concrete decision at this time. You are just getting your feet wet for what’s to come. The Budget This may not be your favorite part of wedding planning but it’s definitely vital. You want to be real with yourself and really think about what the two of you can actually afford. This day is about exchanging vows with the person you love so you don’t want your wedding day to be haunted by the shadows of debt. Your budget should be discussed first because it is a major determinant when it comes to every other aspect of planning. Your budget should factor in your venue, catering, wedding apparel, flowers, music, photography, invitations and your honeymoon. The Date You can start by deciding how long you want to take planning your wedding. Do you want to skip down the aisle 1 year from now or maybe 8 months? You may also begin by choosing a season. Do you envision a winter wonderland wedding or maybe sometime in the spring? From there you can narrow down to which month,

then weekend, then day. Some couples choose three dates and then narrow it down from there. There is also the option of symbolism— choosing a date that means something to the both of you. Consider the first time you met or your anniversary. Don’t fret too much about whether it’s on the traditional Saturday. If you choose to get married in the middle of the week, you may even see venues go into a bidding war for your reception! The Location If you and your love are long-distance lovers, you first need to decide whose city gets to host this spectacular day. Some opt to go with whoever has the most family. Maybe it’s neither city and you want a simple beach wedding or a destination wedding. A

“This day is about exchanging vows with the person you love so you don’t want your wedding day to be haunted by the shadows of debt. ”

destination wedding could easily turn into your honeymoon with a morning brunch with beloved family members before sending them to the airport. Simply talking to your soon-to-be spouse and getting these three things established first can take off so much pressure. The budget will guide your choices and save your money. Establishing your date will keep you on a healthy time frame. And deciding your location will help you get started on your venue hunting. So let the wedding planning begin!

Our wedding day was very special to us because we had been dreaming about that day since we were sixteen years old. We started dating when we were sophomores in high school. On May 15, 2015, Chris graduated with his Master’s in Social Work from LSU. During the graduation ceremony, two of my friends set up a huge sign at the Bell Tower on LSU’s campus. The sign read, “ Nicole, will you marry me?” There we rose pedals and candles surrounding the sign as well.

After the graduation ceremony Chris decided that he wanted to take pictures by the Bell Tower. When everyone arrived at the Bell Tower, Ed Sheeran’s “Thinking Out Loud” was playing in the background, and Chris dropped to his knee. We decided to have our wedding in July because I am a Kindergarten teacher. The summer was the perfect time for the wedding because I would already have time off to finish the last minute details.

S

ince we are huge LSU fans, Chris threw the garter to the LSU pregame music. During the garter toss, purple and gold lights alternated around the hall. I also surprised Chris with the LSU stadium as his groom’s cake. I am a dancer and love New Orleans music, so the second line was very important to me during the reception. My godfather and aunt gave us their second line umbrellas as our wedding gift. Our umbrellas are like no others. We danced the night away surrounded by our loved ones.

THE BLEU A

BLOWDRY BAR

INSIDER

How did you get into the beauty business? I have always been interested in and experimenting with hair and makeup since I was a child. Once I graduated with my B.A. in Public Relations from Tulane, looking into opening my own business was the next and natural step to make. Tell me a little bit about how BLEU and how it came into being? On a trip to New York, I fell in love with the blowdry bar concept. Never wanting to do my own hair, I knew it would be the perfect idea for the Greater New Orleans area. After researching franchising options, I decided it would limit me in the grander scheme and decided to go for it and open my own salon, by my own rules. What do you enjoy most about your work? Getting to work with my fabulous “BLEU Krewe” who are extremely talented and have become like family. Our clients are the best in the world and seeing them look and feel fabulous is a feeling I will never grow tired of. Any advice on choosing a makeup look for the big day? Do not try anything out of the ordinary, stay true to your sense of style. Going drastically different or trendy on your special day will only result in not feel-ing like yourself. Be the BEST version of YOURSELF.

How much should a bride spend for hair and makeup?
Time, talent, and experience are costly. $100+ is reasonable. If a low price seems too good to be true, it probably is. You wouldn’t cut costs on your dress selection, photographer, or food. So why bargain shop when it comes to your hair and makeup; pictures last forever.

What are some tips to finding a hair/makeup artist? Find a stylist/artist that reflects your personal style, not you trying to fit theirs. Flip through your favorite local magazine and take notes of the vendors. If you remember a certain wedding you attended that the bride and bridesmaids looked fabu-lous, reach out to the bride and inquire who provided their services.

How far in advance should a bride choose a makeup artist and book a trial? Weddings are usually booked on a first come, first deposit paid basis, so chose as soon as possible to secure your first choice. If you are on the fence between artists, visit both and then make a timely decision.

Elizabeth marie Roser and Blake Christopher banner

Blake and I met when we were in elementary school. Blake’s father and my stepfather have been best friends for over forty years. We did not become good friends until high school . It was during that time period that we started spending a lot of time together. I decided to attend The University of Louisiana at Lafayette for college, which is also where Blake was already attending school. Our friendship began to strengthen during our four years in college. We were even roommates for two of those years. It was not until I returned home to New Orleans that we began dating.

Elizabeth marie Roser and Blake Christopher banner Blake proposed to me on November 1, 2014. We returned to our alma mater for the homecoming game. Once the homecoming parade ended, Blake got down on one knee and asked me to marry him. He planned the proposal perfectly as it took place in front of t h e Alu mn i Hou se at Un i ve rsity of Lafayette. There was a photographer present and many of our good friends were there to witness, film, and celebrate the day with us.

edding planning was not very stressful because I had my mom to help me plan throughout the year and a half engagement. The most stressful part was finding a wedding dress and realizing the last minute details that had been forgotten. Our wedding was everything we wanted and more. I was a nervous wreck all day due to the fact it was raining and our ceremony was suppose to be held outside. Despite missing some outside decorations and the temperature dropping twenty degrees, once I saw Blake standing by the fountain, I knew everything would turn out perfect. Our wedding was a magical ceremony and all our closest family and friends were there to witness this event.

Elizabeth Kathleen Crouch and George Joseph Vulevich III

I was attending Auburn for my undergraduate studies and George was at LSU. One spring break I was homesick and decided to come home to visit my friends at LSU. One of my best friends invited me to her sorority’s crawfish boil. She had subsequently invited her boyfriend and his roommate, George. The rest is history! We dated long distance for the next year and a half. George and I got married six years from the day we met at that crawfish boil.

Elizabeth Kathleen Crouch and George Joseph Vulevich III George had made plans for us to go for a Christmas dinner at Galatoire’s. After dinner, to my surprise, there was a horse and buggy waiting to take us to The Roosevelt Hotel. As we were walking through The Roosevelt to the Sazerac Bar, George stopped me and got down on one knee. He asked me to marry him under the beautiful Christmas decorations. Even more surprising, George had arranged for our friends and family to be at the Sazerac Bar. They were all waiting as we entered. We celebrated our engagement surrounded by our loved ones.

F

or the wedding day, all my bridesmaids and I got ready at my parents’ house. My mom used the lace from her wedding dress to make my garter and the ring bearer’s pillow. I had my paternal grandmother’s antique cameo pinned to my bouquet in memory of her. Both my mom and grandmother wore this cameo on their wedding days. After we were all dressed and everyone had seen my bridal dress, we went outside to head to Sacred Heart, my high school, where the wedding would be held. To my surprise there was an antique 1931 Ford Model A waiting for me. It was a special surprise from my parents. My maternal grandfather collected antique cars and he would use one of the antique cars on special family occasions. Since my grandfather is no longer with us, the antique car was in memory of him. At the reception, George and I danced to “ Everything” by Michael Buble. My dad and I danced to “ My Girl” by The Temptations. George and his mother danced to “ Simply the Best” by Tina Turner. After these special dances were over, the party was just getting started! Our friends and family members danced with us until the very last song!

“...the party was just getting started!”

WHEN TO

SPLURGE SAVE WHEN TO

Knowing when to save and when to spend freely is a tricky business, especially when it comes to weddings and eager brides. Here is a quick list to help you decide which things are worth the money.

SPLURGE Wedding Dress If it’s the “dream dress,” it’s worth spending a few extra bucks. Looking good is feeling good. Shoes You’ll be on your feet most of the day, buying comfy shoes is a must. Bridal Bouquet Spend on the flowers that you really want and love. Centerpieces sets the style and mood for the reception. Appetizers & Entrée If there is one thing peoplewillremember, it’s the food. Wedding Cake The same with your bouquet and dress, don’t settle for filling or flavor you won’t enjoy. Music & Lighting don’t underestimate the power of lighting and the right tunes. These things set the mood for the rest of the night.

SAVE Wedding Veil It’s understandable to over spend for your dress, but a veil? Makeup Professional makeup can sometimes make you appear as an entirely different person; it’s okay to be yourself on your wedding day. Flower Girl Bouquet She doesn’t even need a bouquet, give her some rose petals and she’s good to go. Ceremony Chairs no one notices

Trust me, the chairs.

Dessert Isn’t this what a cake is for? Wedding Favors These aren’t something to stress over. A donation, or even if they’re DIY will work perfectly!

Photography This is a pretty obvious one. You’ll be looking at these photographs for years to come.
