2023 - as we are about to enter a new year, I look back at events that has coloured the one we are leaving. The world is a place of constant change, and this last year I think has moved us towards a place where darkness is demanding more space than light. I think it is especially when the world is in turmoil that we need artists who use their talent to expand our vision, and shine a light for us to see clearer.

The pandemic pushed NORDphotography into online teaching, which has allowed us to reach a wider audience and given us the opportunity to get to know creative talents from all over the world. It also has made the world a bit closer, as we get to know people living and working under very different parameter, but all with the same passion for photography, and for creating images to tell stories, share experiences, highlight events and so on.

We have participants living with war in their countries, others in places where nature is showing its powers, and yet they still joined our classes, to expand their talents and tell their stories. We have participants who turns personal struggles and losses into an art project that not only helps them deal with their situation, but also enlighten us, and help us deal with our own. This is where art has its greatest power. It is a language that knows no boundaries, that we all understand and can take something from, when it speaks in a tone that resonates with us.

I want to thank everyone who has joined our classes both online and in person. I am in awe of the work that has been created this year. I also want to thank our instructors, who never disappoints, and keeps inspiring and pushing our participants to reach their goals.

We have a varied program for 2023, with around 10 workshops, and 11 online courses. We have a new destination - Italy, which we are very excited about. We have expanded our faculty with more incredible instructors for you to learn from. We hope you find something in our program that ignites your fire, and we look very much forward to welcoming both new and familiar faces to our classes in 2023.

WORKSHOP: Intuitive Portraits

Dates: Sept 26 - October 1 Tuition: NOK 12.000,Location: SAGA, Norway

In our workshop with American ar tist Andrea Modica, we will investigate historical and contemporary fine art portraiture, as well as editorial photography, with an emphasis on interpretation and creating a sense of personal vision. © Anna Clarén

ANNA CLARÉN

-one of Swedens most recognised photographers, known for using the camera to tell personal stories.

WORKSHOP: The Personal Project

Dates: Sep 5 - 10

Tuition: NOK 12.000,Location: SAGA, Norway

Join Anna Clarén on a workshop where you will learn to use your camera to connect to your emotions, and develop a narrative that leaves a more personal expression in your work.

At first glance, Anna Clarén’s photographs appear frighteningly beautiful but underneath that surface is a kind of underlying unease that is evoked by the images’ thin, pale appearance. Her photographs are personal but because they bring what is private into the public sphere, we can all share in a life that perhaps we can all recognise ourselves in. The photos provoke questions about existence, belonging and the future. Clarén’s deeply personal photographs are simultaneously a universal narrative about being human’ - curator Maria Patella.

Anna will share her process and show images from her different projects with the class, as inspiration. Students will develop their own personal series of photographs during our time at SAGA, under the guidance of Anna. There will be image critic every day, some in group and some one-on-one. Anna also gives creative assignments to help participants develop a natural approach to finding their angle into personal storytelling.

Further Anna will share with her students how you can create images that expresses emotional feelings.

It is about using the camera to show what is felt, and not always what is seen. When you create images that convey your inner emotions, you will connect with your viewers in a deeper way, and your storytelling abilities will expand, as you will have combined what is in front of the lense, with how you are feeling on the inside.

ONLINE AND IN-PERSON WORKSHOP

ELIZABETH AVEDON

-A highly regarded photo-book and exhibition designer, independent curator and photo consultant.

ONLINE: The Photo Book

Period: Feb 15 - Oct 4 Tuition: NOK 20.000,-

Our online book-design class spans over 9 months and is divided into 3 separate levels. This will allow students to develop a well crafted book by the end of the course.

LEVEL 1: Wednesdays - starts Feb 15, ends Mar 22

LEVEL 2: Week-end course: Jun 3 - Jun 4

LEVEL 3: Wednesday - starts Sep 6, ends Oct 4

There is a rich history of self-published authors including Ernest Hemingway, Stephen King and Mark Twain. Now that artists are able to produce their own hardcover and softcover books online at a relatively low cost, self-publishing has become a popular alternative for photographers.

The goal on this course is for you to leave this class with a photo book pdf ready to self-publish or present to a publisher.

Your instructor Elizabeth will give you assignments between sessions to help you elevate your book, and get ready for the next Level. We strongly encourage students to use the time in between the different levels to work on the skills learned thus far, and keep developing your book.

Designing a great photo-book takes time, and this class is structured to give you enough time to develop your taste, skill-set, and design choices, so the end result is a thoroughly crafted book that highlights your work in the best way possible.

We will be using BLURB for this class, and each student needs to download and become familiar with Blurb.com’s ‘free’ BookWright software before classes begin. You may also use INDesign, Quark, or Photoshop if you are more familiar with these softwares. The class will not cover technical or design software issues.

“I came to this workshop with the intention of making a practice book of my work. I could not imagine that I would leave with a book, let alone one I love. I did not think that was possible. Each level brought more clarity and Ahah! moments for design decisions and edits. It was only with the help of Elizabeth’s instruction, feedback and encouragement, while in a supportive group environment, that guided me to a place where I felt seen and heard in something I made. My on-going memoir. With deep sincerity, thank you.” – Sam Geballe

WORKSHOP: The Creative Portrait

This is a brand new workshop especially designed for Saga. With this course you will be able to chal-

lenge yourself with “thinking outside the box”exercises and how to utilise what you have around you creatively in a portrait. Storytelling and how to use props and styling, combined with good lighting, composition and knowledge of colour theory are all topics that will be discussed and explored. We will also study how a face can be transformed depending on different light angles and heights and furthermore how light painting techniques, which is Ragne’s signature style, can transform ordinary surroundings into something magic.

The light studies during the class will help you to understand light in all its variety in everyday life: From day light to studio photography with strobes. You should have basic understanding of light to join this class. And if you previously have been part of Ragne’s light painting online courses or workshops, this class will help you excel further in your light pain ting techniques.

Light painting is equal to “slow photography”. A picture takes from 10 seconds to several minutes to make. Because light painting itself adds a lot of mystique and atmosphere to the photography, most often very little has to be added in post production. So if your aim is to make creative all-in-one-shot type of photography, light painting is the answer.

TRAVIS HOCUTT

-An artist working with photography, sculptures, woodworks and book-binding.

WORKSHOP: The Artist Book

Dates: Tuition: Mar 28 - Apr 2 NOK 12.000,Material fee: NOK 1.000,Location: SAGA, Norway

This workshop will cover various bookbinding techniques as well as ways for you to incorporate your own work into a handmade book.

Participants are welcome to focus on learning many different book structures, or to use the class to make a final book project. This class is structured so that beginners as well as advanced students can take something away from class. Beginners will learn a number of book binding techniques, advanced students may wish instead to select and complete a final project.

You will be introduced to several book binding techniques including Accordion, Japanese stab, clam-shell boxes, portfolio folders, as well as several variations of those bindings. Students will also be provided with a detailed materials list describing both the minimum materials necessary as well as descriptions of optional tools and materials so you can select the materials you need for your own projects.

Beginners:

Throughout the class Hocutt will be demonstrating various bookbinding techniques and talking about the various material and tool options available. Hocutt will answer any questions and will be available to help troubleshoot any problems as well as give feedback on books you make.

Advanced students:

Participants who intend to create a finished artist book should be familiar with book-binding, and should have a plan about the size of their book and binding technique they wish to use. Travis will give advice in this regard in class, but it is important that you have started the thought process and considered different sizes, and bindings that fits your work, before the workshop starts. You should also have prepared the images, and prints, which of course then should be fitted for the book size, and your chosen binding.

You can print images at SAGA during the workshop. Additional cost will then apply.

Our classes are designed for photographers and other image-makers wanting to create artist books of their work, as well as for anyone looking to learn a new craft.
