2022 - A YEAR OF HOPE. We have all, these past years, had to adapt to restrictions, new rules, both in our private life and business life. Everything that we took for granted 2 years ago, has been switched around, and looks nothing like it did before. But we have also learned how to quickly adapt and how to see new opportunities in the changes that this pandemic forces into our lives. As we morn everyone who we have lost, we also need to look forward, and start the healing process. One of the first online activity we started when the Pandemic hit Norway was The image Crit. It was a fun, laid back, creative challenge that would allow us to keep contact with our audience and share and celebrate photography, when we could no longer meet in person. NORDphotography would send out a creative challenge on Monday and meet up online every
Friday. Participants could submit 1 image, and everyone was encourage to give feedback in class. We also had a rule that you needed to dress as if you where going out in public, and bring a beverage with you. So it felt like a ‘almost’ typical social gathering. Now, almost 2 years later, The Image Crit is still going strong. Due to high demand we offer 3 different groups in 2022, and our meetings are once or twice a month. This online activity has also been a beacon of hope for us, as it gave us the opportunity to keep meeting likeminded creative people, who share the love for photography, even when everything was closed down. I want to thank our amazing participants for this gift, and have dedicated our end-papers in this catalogue to celebrate some of the beautiful work presented at The Image Crit 2021. Our program for 2022 consists of both online courses and in-person workshops. We have one destination workshop in Iceland planned for April and we are looking at dates for a workshop in St Petersburg at the end of 2022. We thank our wonderful instructors who have been very positive and embraced our new online concepts and adapted very quickly. Together we have brought the same high quality and enthusiasm we are known for. I hope to see both new and familiar faces next year, and promise to keep creating learning experiences that will inspire and help you expand your talent, together with some of the best instructors in the world. WORKSHOP: The Personal Project Dates: Tuition: Location:
Aug 30 - Sep 4 NOK 11.000,SAGA, Norway
Join one of Scandinavias most recognised artist, Ann Clarén, on a workshop where you will learn to use your camera to connect to your emotions, and
develop a narrative that leaves a more personal expression in your work. At first glance, Anna Clarén’s photographs appear frighteningly beautiful but underneath that surface is a kind of underlying unease that is evoked by the images’ thin, pale appearance. Her photographs are personal but because they bring what is private into the public sphere, we can all share in a life that perhaps we can all recognise ourselves in. The photos provoke questions about existence, belonging and the future. Clarén’s deeply personal photographs are simultaneously a universal narrative about being human’ - curator Maria Patella. Anna will share her process and show images from her different projects with the class, as inspiration. Students will develop their own personal series of photographs during our time at SAGA, under the guidance of Anna. There will be image critic every day, some in group and some one-on-one. Anna also gives creative assignments to help participants develop a natural approach to find their angle into personal storytelling. Further Anna will share with her students how you can create images that expresses emotional feelings. It is about using the camera to show what is felt, and not always what is seen. When you create images that convey your inner emotions, you will connect with your viewers in a deeper way, and your storytelling abilities will expand, as you will have combined what is in front of the lense, with how you are feeling on the inside. ONLINE AND IN-PERSON WORKSHOP
CONNIE IMBODEN
- over 40 years using photography to examine and redefine the human body ONLINE: Image Articulation
ONLINE: Visual Illusion Level 1
In this online class Connie will help you make decisions in the post processing part of your image, that will elevate the image to its fullest potential.
This online course will bend your imagination in new exciting ways, as you learn to create images that might not always be what they seam at first glance.
If we think of intuitive seeing as the first part of the creative process, then the second part would be articulating the image. The most enduring works of art are made from a combination and interaction of rational thought and intuitive, instinctual processes. A fluent exploration with the camera allows our eyes to take the lead, opening the gateway to discovery by freeing us from the intrusive thought process. Mindful post production, or articulation, helps us extract those exquisite moments of discovery through the deliberate analysis and refinement of these revelations.
A visual Illusions are not only fascinating, they are powerful. It plays with the line between knowing and seeing. We think we “know” something but our eyes tell a different story. This class is about ways of exploring, discovering, developing, and utilising the influence of illusions beyond mere tricks of seeing to compelling and poetic communication.
The focus of this online course is to first develop the skills necessary to engage with our images on a level that allows us to see them clearly and understand what they are saying. Second, to learn how to amplify their voice and articulate their deeper level of truth through a refined process of post-production.
ONLINE: Visual Illusion Level 2
Day: Wednesday / 3 sessions Period: Jan 19 - Feb 9 Tuition: NOK 4.200,-
Day: Monday / 6 sessions Period: Apr 25 - Jun 13 Tuition: NOK 6.200,-
We will employ illusionistic techniques through assignments, discussions and critiques. There will be assignment given between each class to challenge your vision and spark your creativity.
Day: Wednesday / 6 sessions: Period: Oct 19 - Nov 30 Tuition: NOK 6.200,-
This online course is a continuation of Connie’s Visual Illusions Level 1 class, and will build on the lessons learned, with the aim to push your creative talent even further. Connie will teach you new skills as you develop your photography and explore new ways to add the magic of illusions into your work. Complete descriptions at: WWW.NORDPHOTOGRAPHY.COM

Our online book-design class spans over 9 months and is divided into 3 separate levels. This will allow students to develop a well crafted book by the end of the course. LEVEL 1: Wednesdays - starts Feb 23, ends Mar 30. LEVEL 2: Week-end course: Jun 4 - Jun 5. LEVEL 3: Wednesday - starts Sep 7, ends Oct 5. There is a rich history of self-published authors including Ernest Hemingway, Stephen King and Mark Twain. Now that artists are able to produce their own hardcover and softcover books online at a relatively low cost, self-publishing has become a popular alternative for photographers.
The goal on this course is for you to leave this class with a photo book pdf ready to self-publish or present to a publisher. Your instructor Elizabeth will give you assignments between sessions to help you elevate your book, and get ready for the next Level. We strongly encourage students to use the time in between the different levels to work on the skills learned thus far, and keep developing your book. Designing a great photo-book takes time, and this class is structured to give you enough time to develop your taste, skill-set, and design choices, so the end result is a thoroughly crafted book that highlights your work in the best way possible. We will be using BLURB for this class, and each student needs to download and become familiar with Blurb.com’s ‘free’ BookWright software before classes begin. You may also use INDesign, Quark, or Photoshop if you are more familiar with these softwares. The class will not cover technical or design software issues.

WORKSHOP: Wet Plate Collodium Dates: Tuition: Location:
May 24 - 29 NOK 11.000,(+ chemistry fee NOK 900,-) SAGA, Norway
This workshop will transport you back to the beginning of photography and teach you to create glass negatives and tintypes using wet plate techniques from the 1860s. Our instructor has written two books about the topic and she is regarded as one of America’s most experienced and respected alternative process artists. The collodion process, which is said to have been invented in about 1850, was the first widely used photographic process that produced a negative image on a transparent photographic medium. Other methods of the time, such as the Daguerreotype, produced a one-of-a-kind positive image, which could not be replicated easily. The workshop will cover the entire process from cutting and preparing glass & aluminum, mixing and handling chemicals, safety procedures, making portable darkrooms, assessment of exposure time, evaluation of results, and all that goes into mastering the wet plate collodion process. You need no prior experience in Alternative Process to join this class. The workshop is also open for participants who have experience and wants to join us for a week to practise their skills with Jill Enfield.

Apr 19 - 24 NOK 11.000,SAGA, Norway
Join us on our workshop with photographer Ragne K Sigmond and discover the wonders of light-painting, where you can blend the surreal look of night with brushstrokes of light to enhance your own stories.
On our workshop with Ragne K. Sigmond we will explore the wonders of light, study how a face can be transformed depending on different light angles and heights and furthermore how light painting can transform ordinary surroundings into something magic. All with the brush strokes from an ordinary handheld flash light/ torch in combination with a camera attached to a tripod set on a long exposure time. Mastering this technique you can make wonders with even the cheapest flash light. Light painting is equal to “slow photography”. A picture takes from 10 seconds to several minutes to make. Because light painting itself adds a lot of mystique and atmosphere to the photography, most often very little has to be added in post production. This technique is also perfect for photographers who want to create interesting images without the need of expensive equipment, that also requires a lot of space. We’re also talking about the easiest and lightest version of light equipment to travel with. You’ll be able to make wonders wherever you travel with a single flash light in combination with the knowledge of light! With 15 years experience of teaching how to sculpt with light on a daily basis, our instructor Ragne K. Sigmond will show you how she likes to work, and why it is important to not over complicate a photoshoot. Take chances and explore as an important part of the creative process. If your mind is open, it might very well lead to new and innovative work!
