Welcome to NORDphotography’s 15th Year!

I can still vividly recall sitting in Joyce Tenneson’s studio in Maine, looking bewildered as she suggested I start my own company offering high-quality workshops with instructors of her caliber. Fifteen years later, I look back with pride at the incredible roster of worldrenowned instructors who have trusted me to organise workshops with them. Their belief in me has allowed NORDphotography to grow, evolve, and continue offering transformative experiences for photographers.

I can also see the fruit of this labor, through all the different projects that has emerged into the photo scene, ignited in one of our classes. That is still my biggest joy of running NORDphotography. Our wonderful program for 2025 is a dynamic mix of online classes, workshops, and creative journeys. We offer three different mentor programs this year. One in-person (taking place in Oslo), and two on-line classes: The Personal Project with Swedish photographer Anna Clarén, and The Artistic Vision with acclaimed artist Connie Imboden (US).

We kick off the year with online classes. First off is our Text & Image 1 class with Sal Taylor Kydd starting January 14th, followed by our creative exercise class - The Image Crit, as well as our Alternative Process Forum with Jill Enfield. Our book design class The Photo-Book with Elizabeth Avedon starts February 26th. In March Sal Taylor Kydd continue with Text and Image 2, and in April our light-painting master Ragne K Sigmond teaches her online class

Creative Lighting. The Fall online classes starts October 15th with Stig M Weston´s class From Portfolio to Podium. Followed by Jari Poulin popular class The Wonders of Polaroid.

If you want to visit our creative center SAGA (Norway) this year for a workshop the first opportunity is in May when the master of historical photo processes, Jill Enfield will teach her Alternative Process class. The first week of June Diana Bloomfield teaches her new class The Handmade Artist book. And last week of August the award winning artist Jari Poulin, our newest member of our faculty is visiting SAGA with her class The Art of Multiple Exposure. The first week of September Stig M Weston will teach his workshop Light & Alchemy, where we explore a variety of experimental Analog Photography. The last in-person workshop at SAGA this year will be in late September, when Ragne K Sigmond teaches The Creative Portrait. We are introducing a brand new offer at SAGA in September as well, called The Artist Week.

As for our Creative Journeys in 2025 we are going places in October! Be part of an unforgettable road trip in Iceland October 2nd - 9th. Or join writer and photographer Sal Taylor Kydd at a former aristocratic estate, now an organic farm, exploring the rolling hills of Tuscany.

My wish for this year is that our classes will inspire, motivate and help you continue on your creative journey wherever you are going.

Sincerely,

SAL TAYLOR KYDD

- A writer, poet and book-artist

ONLINE: Text and Image I

Day: Tuesday 20:00-22:00 CET/ 2-4PM EST

Period: Jan 14 - Feb 25 / 6 sessions

Tuition: NOK 7.600,-

This is a class for photographers looking to experiment with incorporating writing into their creative practice in combination with their photography.

Each meeting will include opportunities for critique of your images with the goal to explore ways to include text to enhance the story. You can show new work, or work you have done before. We will examine sequencing of text and image to create unexpected moments in your narrative. All forms of writing are encouraged from prose to poetry.

Sal will give you assignments between classes that will allow you to experiment with writing, as you tailor your creative process. There will also be time for discussion and workshopping of your writing, together with the rest of the class.

ONLINE: Text and Image II

Day: Tuesday 20:00-22:00 CET/ 2-4PM EST

Period: Mar 18 - Apr 29 / 6 sessions

Tuition: NOK 7.600,-

We will look at how you can combine your writing and photographs to enhance your narrative in book form. Examples of artists who combine text and image in various forms both on and off the page will be shared for inspiration, as well as a look at different avenues for publishing your work in today’s publishing landscape. Extensive discussion will examine the sequencing of text and image to create unexpected moments in your narrative, as well as other design and layout considerations.

This is a class for experienced photographers who are looking to develop their book project, using photography in combination with the written word. Experience with Adobe Indesign is helpful but not essential.

Sal is an incredibly patient and generous instructor (with a great sense of fun). She is that rare type of artist who can articulate her version and inspire others to do the same using our own voices and our own imaginations, memories and stories. The assignments are fun but also challenging. And they open up space for individual creativity.

Each meeting is an opportunity to present images, to receive constructive critique and discuss photography.

“The photo project (Funkis & Formalin) about the Pharmaceutical Institute at Blindern took shape during NORDphotography’s mentoring program in 2021. Elisabeth established my faith in the project and made me feel more confident in my own photographic voice.”

IN PERSON: The Mentor Program

Dates: Feb 11 - Dec 9

Tuition: NOK 25.000,-

Location: OSLO

This is a mentorship program for photographers looking to work on long term projects, with the goal of finishing a body of work within the length of the program. Lectures, discussions and critique of student work will be the structure of the mentorship. To expand our creative tool-box, we will implement different practises from Julia Cameron’s beloved book “The Artist Way”.

This program will help discover, develop and fine-tune each photographer’s creative voice. You should come to this mentorship with an idea of a project. It can be an old project you want to finish, or a new project you want to create. We will meet once a month. The lecture will be tailored to each participant’s project, to give inspiration and guidance for further development. During this mentorship you will learn to develop a cohesive body of work, present work in a professional matter, to critique other photographers work, and to respond to critique of your own work. The mentor program wraps with a group exhibition in Oslo where each participant exhibit a selection of images from their project.

PS: As a participant in this program, you receive a 20% discount on the workshop fee on all workshops that take place at SAGA in 2025.

ELIZABETH AVEDON

- A highly regarded photo-book and exhibition designer, independent curator and photo consultant.

ONLINE: The Photo Book

Period: Feb 26 - Oct 1

Tuition: NOK 25.000,-

Our online book-design class spans over 9 months and is divided into 3 separate levels. This will allow students to develop a well crafted book by the end of the course.

LEVEL 1:

Wednesday: Feb 26, Mar 5, 12, 26

LEVEL 2:

Wednesday, Saturday: Jun 4, 8, 11

LEVEL 3:

Wednesday: Sep 3, 10, 17, Oct 1

There is a rich history of self-published authors including Ernest Hemingway, Stephen King and Mark Twain. Now that artists are able to produce their own hardcover and softcover books online at a relatively low cost, self-publishing has become a popular alternative for photographers. The goal on this course is for you to leave this class with a

photo book pdf ready to self-publish or present to a publisher.

Your instructor Elizabeth will give you assignments between sessions to help you elevate your book, and get ready for the next Level. We strongly encourage students to use the time in between the different levels to work on the skills learned thus far, and keep developing your book.

Designing a great photo-book takes time, and this class is structured to give you enough time to develop your taste, skill-set, and design choices, so the end result is a thoroughly crafted book that highlights your work in the best way possible.

We will be using BLURB for this class, and each student needs to download and become familiar with Blurb.com’s ‘free’ BookWright software before classes begin. You may also use INDesign, Quark, or Photoshop if you are more familiar with these softwares. The class will not cover technical or design software issues.

“I came to this workshop with the intention of making a practice book of my work. I could not imagine that I would leave with a book, let alone one I love.  I did not think that was possible. Each level brought more clarity and Ahah! moments for design decisions and edits. It was only with the help of Elizabeth’s instruction, feedback and encouragement, while in a supportive group environment, that guided me to a place where I felt seen and heard in something I made. My on-going memoir. With deep sincerity, thank you.”  Sam Geballe

Ignite Your Creativity with Portraits and Light Painting.

Through Ragne’s “thinking out of the box” exercises, you’ll learn to create stunning, story-driven portraits with minimal props—relying instead on your vision, creativity, and resourcefulness. You’ll explore the transformative power of light, discovering how angles and heights can change a face, and how light painting can turn ordinary surroundings into magical scenes.

Her practical approach and generous teaching style will inspire you to simplify your process and create innovative, impactful work.

Perfect for those with a basic understanding of light, this workshop is an excellent next step for anyone who has previously taken Ragne’s light painting courses and wants to advance further. Don’t miss this opportunity to transform your photography and embrace new creative challenges! There can be no light without shadow: or rather no shadow unless there is also light.

DIANA BLOOMFIELD

- Specialising in 19th century Photographic Printing Processes

WORKSHOP:

The Handmade Artist Book

Dates: Jun 3 - 8

Tuition: NOK 16.000,- (Incl material)

Location: SAGA, Norway

Acc Cost: Please see page 41

Have you ever wanted to interpret your photographic art in a totally unique way, one that embraces a whole other fantastic art form? If so, The Handmade Artist Book may be just the thing for you.

As a long time photographer and visual storyteller, Diana Bloomfield uses the book form as a creative way to re-interpret her own work.

Creating artist books that push the boundaries of the traditional book form, and where structure meshes with content, offers inspiring, innovative, and interactive ways for creative expression. In this workshop, we’ll look at an array of handmade books

and the possibilities inherent with this creative art form. As so many handmade books incorporate some form of the accordion book, we’ll start that way, too. From there, we’ll move on to origami, piano hinge, flag book variations, and more.

Creating a book a day is the goal for this workshop. And if you happen to like one book form more than another, you can easily concentrate on and stay with that one if you like. Each book, however, will build on what you learned from the day before. At the end of the week, you will be able to take home what you learned and, hopefully, expand on those designs, making them all your own.

Papers and all materials will be supplied, but if you have photographs or other art you would like to incorporate into some of these books, feel free to bring them.

No prior experience is necessary for this workshop.

“I still hold my breath when I think of their fragility and beauty, and yet here they are, the most unique books you’ve ever seen, perched on shelves to make you tremble“
Ann Jastrab, Executive Director, Center for Fine Art Photography, Carmel, California
