NORTH KESTEVEN CENTRE NORTH HYKEHAM, UK HIGHER EDUCATION The North Kesteven Centre is a joint use sport and leisure facility used by the public and North Kesteven School. It includes shared use wet and dry leisure facilities and the Terry O’Toole Theatre. It also includes joint use external pitches, a Benefits office and Info-Links- a Council run information service. The facilities, once enhanced internally, will offer much more than a traditional leisure centre to a wider range of public users. Consequently there is the opportunity to enhance the image and profile of the Centre, to be named NK Life, with a vibrant architectural approach. It will then form a visual focus on the site when viewed from both outside and inside its boundaries. The proposed refurbishment and remodelling of the North Kesteven Centre is to be carried out in four phases. Phase 1: The resurfacing of the existing artificial pitch and not the subject of this planning application. Phase 2: The creation of new studios and changing area on the first floor. A new fire escape is the subject of this planning application. Phase 3: The construction of a new mezzanine floor area of approximately 335 square metres to create additional space for a relocated fitness gym, studios, office and changing area. This additional space is the subject of this planning application. New windows are to be inserted at ground and first floor levels. Phase 4: A new entrance and canopy will be formed with improved signage. A new roof mounted plant enclosure will also be screened with illuminated signage panels. Internally the reception foyer and entrance area will be transformed into a shared use space with café, Theatre and Info-Links. A contemporary design stance was encouraged by the local Planning Authority and allowed us to develop a simple, elegant design which had to be carefully considered in order to respect the locale, in particular the adjacent Grade I Listed church and historic quay. The project received planning consent in January 2010 and completed on site in the spring of 2011. The clubhouse has a comfortable lounge with a bar, a ‘snug’ area with a wood-burning stove, an auditorium and a training/committee room plus a terrace enjoying magnificent views of Carrick Roads and the Roseland peninsula beyond.

CLIENT Craigholme School SCALE 1,200 m²

CRAIGHOLME SPORTS HALL GLASGOW LIFESTYLE: SPORT + LEISURE

VALUE £1.7 million

When NORR was appointed as architect for Craigholme School’s Sports Hall, the design team arrived at a conceptual approach for the new facility: ‘the story of three mats’.

COMPLETION 2006

The first ‘mat’ allows vehicles to ‘touch-down’ safely in the new car park that sweeps in off Haggs Road. The second, folded, ‘mat’ represents the new sports centre itself, laying down a timber deck that ‘wraps up’ all the accommodation: a four court sports hall, a climbing wall, a dance studio, changing rooms, and a viewing gallery with kitchenette, all within a finely crafted timber box. The roof is skewed to allow a generous overhang for weather protection on the gables and over the decked threshold area, encouraging spectators to stand outside of the building. The third ‘mat’ represents the playing surface of the all-weather hockey pitch, including anglepoise flood lighting creating an external room. The fabric and service systems were designed to address issues of sustainability, considered essential for the successful delivery of this building.

CLIENT Millwall FC COMPLETION Design 2008

THE DEN MASTERPLAN MILLWALL, LONDON LIFESTYLE: SPORT + LEISURE The aspirations for the regeneration of Millwall FC and the surrounding wider context are high. This development intends to deliver a new focus to the North Lewisham area, creating a new sense of place for the local area and looks to address the wider context of London. The stadium and adjacent areas have the potential to act as a catalyst for regeneration of this area of North Lewisham. The vision for the masterplan begins with the premise of city clusters and citywide views. We know already of the clusters to the east of Canary Wharf, and to the west of the City, but what the masterplan proposes is a new cluster and a new architectural focus around the Millwall stadium, one that is visible from different viewpoints across London. What we are proposing at the MIllwall FC Development Site is a central crown of development comprising of eight towers located around the existing stadium creating the new North Lewisham cluster, with other smaller buildings spreading out from that central hub. The towers are elevated above ground level so that only the core and superstructure descend into the public realm maximising views over London whilst minimising impact at ground level. The masterplan proposals describe a mixed-use scheme comprising of apartments; retail units; bars and restaurants; offices; a new community leisure centre including sports facilities; and potentially other leisure and recreational uses such as a city cinema facility and a 1,000 seat multi-use venue.

CLIENT London Borough of Redbridge SCALE 7,400 m² VALUE £24 million (estimated) COMPLETION Design 2007

MAJOR LEISURE DEVELOPMENT ILFORD LIFESTYLE: SPORT + LEISURE Architect and Lead Consultant for a new leisure centre including a 50 metre competition pool with booms and movable floors, 25 metre learner pool, seating for 500 spectators, 12 court multi purpose hall, health & fitness suite, dance studio, multi-purpose studio, vending and cafe area. NORR adopted a sinuous free flowing roof form ‘draped’ over the heights of the internal leisure centre spaces in order to minimise the building impact on the adjoining residents. The leisure centre was to be developed on made ground infilling a brick pit that extended to an average depth of eight metres. The outline planning application (granted 2007) was supported by a full Environmental Impact Assessment that contained a ground contamination and remediation strategy. Unfortunately due to funding availability at the time the Council was unable to proceed with a leisure centre on the proposed site. NORR has subsequently been appointed to carry out a Feasibility Study for a new leisure centre on two alternative sites within the Borough.

BEN ARTHUR RESORT LOCH LOMOND LIFESTYLE: SPORT + LEISURE The site masterplan overleaf illustrates the variety of buildings on the site and the ‘spaciousness’ with which this achieved within the context of the overall site layout. The buildings provided are as follows: — 1 no 130 bed hotel — 16 no residential units — 36 no apartments for fractional ownership — 1 no chandlery — 1 helipad (Mountain Rescue and Sea King Helicopters) — 100 berth marina facility. The site layout has been arranged in order to ensure that every new building makes the most of the available views, whether it be in a west, east or southerly direction. Residential units have been placed along the northern edge of the site, and also at its western and eastern ends, with the central portion of the site occupied by the hotel and its associated leisure and parking facilities. All of these buildings are complemented by a landscape arrangement which enhances the setting of each individual project, utilising, pruning, refining and generally developing areas of existing planting, topography and rock outcrops where appropriate. The project offers a rare opportunity to develop a high quality resort on a challenging and interesting site in a truly world class environment, creating a series of contemporary yet sensitively designed buildings.

CLIENT Loch Lomond Golf Club

GOLF CLUBHOUSE DUNDONALD LINKS, AYRSHIRE LIFESTYLE: SPORT + LEISURE NORR were one of four architects invited to take part in a competition for the design of a prestigious new clubhouse for Dundonald Links in Ayrshire, the links course of the internationally known Loch Lomond Golf Club. A final decision is currently awaited. Conceptually, there were several key ideas in the design of the clubhouse: — The provision of a strong sense of arrival and departure through the creation of an enclosed, manicured space of entirely different character to the rugged links land around its perimeter. — The definition and enclosure of this space by means of tall masonry walls. (In this sense, the setting of the building was partly inspired by Sir Edwin Lutyen’s Greywalls hotel adjacent to Muirfield). The walls also discreetly enclose car parking and service areas. — The creation of a strong sense of contrast between the protective, castle-like east (entry) elevation, also constructed of masonry, and the highly glazed, ‘open’ elevation to the course and the sea beyond. — The exploration of an architecture which is undeniably contemporary, but also rooted in tradition through the use of robust and traditional materials appropriate to its exposed location. This interpretation of (in this case Scottish) history led to the idea of the entry rotunda or ‘broch’ sitting in its moat of water with Ailsa Craig pebbles, all of which helps to create an elegant and memorable experience for the visitor.

CLIENT Yorkshire County Cricket Club / Leeds Metropolitan University SCALE 4,000 m² VALUE £20 million COMPLETION 2010 BREEAM Excellent AWARDS 2010 Insider Property Industry Awards, Design Excellence Award

CARNEGIE PAVILION LEEDS, UK LIFESTYLE: SPORT + LEISURE The Carnegie Pavilion is a unique ‘dual-use’ higher education and sports facility which is occupied all year round. It is at one and the same time: a university faculty expanding beyond the campus and embedding itself within the surrounding community, within a working sports ground; and sports facility housing applied higher education – a ‘new paradigm in learning’. Leeds Metropolitan University entered into a unique partnership with Yorkshire County Cricket Club (YCCC) to not only enable the delivery of the Carnegie Pavilion, but also to provide mutual benefits for both organisations, enhancing higher education, sport and the all round sustainability of the development. The Carnegie Pavilion accommodates the university’s School of Tourism, Hospitality and Events, where students will benefit from direct exposure to real life sporting events and hospitality. The development incorporates a full-scale teaching kitchen as well as lecture theatres and faculty offices. Students of digital journalism will also be based in the building, and will work hands on with the hi-tech facilities of the new media centre, designed to meet the latest standards for both TV and radio broadcasting. The dual-use 150 seat auditorium converts into a 100 seat press box for journalists, with uninterrupted views of the cricket action. Co-occupation of the building (over 70% of the rooms have been designed for ‘dual-use’) dramatically reduces its running costs, as well as its carbon footprint, when compared with two separate buildings. The Carnegie Pavilion has achieved BREEAM ‘Excellent’ standard whilst complying with ECB cricketing requirements including the south facing glazed wall providing uninterrupted sightlines.
