Making Life Better Through Intelligent Architecture

HEALTHCARE NORR supports a nationwide team of healthcare specialist architects and technical resources committed to delivering best quality design solutions. We believe fundamentally in ‘healing by design’ by taking a holistic approach from the outset and distilling down to the key requirements. It is ultimately the individual people that such facilities serve, provide employment for, or are in coexistence with, that are central to the designs we deliver. Our experience extends to working on numerous Ministry of Justice and Defence projects, bringing added value from shared international knowledge in Health and Sciences from studios across Canada and USA. NORR is a specialist in all types and scale of healthcare project provision, with extensive contract experience in Traditional and Design & Build projects and PFI Schemes. The practice can provide a wide range of services, acting as either Lead Consultant or Architect, individually or as a Design Team member. NORR has an established reputation for working with NHS Hospitals Trusts, Primary Care Trusts, private practices and private healthcare groups, with many projects ranging from surgeries and health centres, through to major hospital developments. The studio is also involved with specialist healthcare aspects such as acute medicine, mental health services, clinical science laboratories, rehabilitation facilities and integrated care, health sciences and research facilities and related higher education teaching facilities.

MASTERPLANNING CLIENT Client NHS Lothian SCALE 51,600 m² VALUE £140 million COMPLETION 2014

ROYAL EDINBURGH PHASE 1 EDINBURGH, SCOTLAND HEALTH: MASTERPLANNING Acting as Lead Designers and Architects, NORR have been working on behalf of HUB South East on the masterplan of Royal Edinburgh Hospital. The master plan for the campus includes the delivery of an adult acute mental health inpatient service, Intensive Psychiatric Care Service (IPCU) and brain injury unit on the site. The new facility will be 100% single bedded. The full delivery programme is expected to last 10 years delivering in excess of 400 bed spaces on the site allowing for the rationalisation of other assets. As well as creating a centre of excellence for the care and treatment of people with mental illness a key driver in the design of the masterplan has been the rationalisation of circulation within the site separating pedestrian and vehicular movement and the reinforcement of the landscape setting to the existing Grade B Listed MacKinnon House.

ROYAL EDINBURGH PHASE 2 EDINBURGH, SCOTLAND HEALTH: MASTERPLANNING Phase 2 of the Royal Edinburgh Masterplan includes an integrated new build Care Facility and refurbishment of the Grade B listed MacKinnon house. The total area for this Phase is 27,718m2; including 14,497m2 for the new build Integrated Rehab, and 13221m2 for the refurbishment of MacKinnon House to include outpatient, office and dining facilities. Design and Scoping work has now commenced on the other elements which comprise Phase 2 of the programme, these consist of the following: – New FM block to serve the redeveloped campus – Integrated Rehab Facility (re-provision of rehabilitation services currently located at the Astley Ainslie Hospital) – Re-provision of SMART services on the Royal Edinburgh Campus (currently located at the Astley Ainslie Hospital) – Refurbishment of MacKinnon House to provide accommodation for support services. Site-wide infrastructure works to support Phase 2 and future development of the REC Campus. – Hard and Soft Landscaping associated with the new build and refurbishment elements of the Phase 2 works. The integrated care facility comprises outpatient facilities; a full rehabilitation suite with hydrotherapy pool; a SMART Centre, which includes prosthetic consulting rooms and state of the art workshops; and 50 bed acute inpatient ward, including a specialist amputee unit. The central timber structured dining hall, built in 1839, is the oldest building at the Royal Edinburgh Hospital. It has been retained and provides the heart to this refurbished, 3 level outpatient and Trust administration facility. It is an important, early example of a purpose built psychiatric hospital. The building was planned as an H-plan form, together with its associated service area to the rear. Known originally as the West House, the building was erected in three stages with the East wing and the central section having been completed earliest in 1842, the wing to the South West was added in 1857, and the wing to the North West in 1867.

NORTH AYRSHIRE COMMUNITY HOSPITAL IRVINE, AYRSHIRE, SCOTLAND HEALTH: MASTERPLANNING This innovative design was prepared for a new Acute Mental Health facility and North Ayrshire Community Hospital on the site of the Ayrshire Central Hospital. The project procured through the NPD route will deliver 206 inpatient beds and supporting clinical services. The facility is approached via a new Plaza and entered via a double volume entrance hall flooded with natural light and ventilation from which simple and clear wayfinding via North and South galleries provide access to the Adult Acute and Older Peoples wards respectively. The North and South galleries flank a central therapy landscape within which are located three Support Clusters and the Spiritual Centre. Landscape is central to the scheme with long views and landscape opportunities achieved within the central therapy landscape and more intimate ward specific landscape courtyards access via the day spaces of each ward. The scheme was developed incorporating the principles developed using the Dementia Design Toolkit and principles developed at the Iris Murdoch Centre, Stirling University.

CLIENT Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust COMPLETION 2026

ROYAL LANCASHIRE HOSPITALS PRESTON, UK HEALTH: MASTERPLANNING Working with a multi-disciplinary team of Helathcare specialists, NORR are engaged in the phased redevelopment of both hospital sites to improve efficiency in the delivery of acute services, complex care, and elective care. Healthcare Planning consultations are ongoing to determining the facilities LTH will need to deliver its future clinical service strategy/plans. Subsequent design work will produce a Masterplan, that reflects modelled future requirements for each site and zone. Once feedback from public engagement and consultation with external planning teams has taken place the Trust is required to produce a Short Term Recovery Plan for this year, leading to the production of a longer term Sustainability Plan. The Masterplan will be a key element in this long term sustainability plan and will be key in producing a Strategic Resilience Case in September 2015 which sets out the impact that the Masterplan would have on the Trusts performance and finances over the next 10+ years. The first phase of development will be a new Emergency Department and Acute Zone, based on a model of care which brings senior clinical decision making to the front of the hospital, integrating assessment and ambulatory care within a new and larger emergency department, including Paediatric emergencies.

Making Life Better Through Intelligent Architecture

COMPLETION 2018 VALUE £60 million SCALE 15,000 m² CLIENT NHS Orkney

The new hospital facility will provide approximately 15,000 m² of accommodation including Emergency Department, Rehabilitation, Maternity, Dental, Renal, Radiology, Mental Health, Macmillan, GP Surgeries and Community Nursing department with work on the new build commencing in 2016. Options that have been investigated include the full refurbishment, remodelling and extension of the existing facilities on the existing site and options for new build facilities on alternative sites. This included an extensive public consultation exercise. Options investigated include an adjacent Care Facility to provide a full health care campus. The project will provide a 46 bed community hospital located near the centre of Kirkwall that provides inpatient and out-patient care for Orkney. Since 2009 NORR have been working with NHS Orkney on the Business Case for the redevelopment of Balfour Hospital through reference design stages and also as Technical Advisers using an NPD Procurement Route.

ACUTE CLIENT Dartford & Gravesham NHS Trust SCALE A&E 520m² new build 112m² of internal refurbishment VALUE £4.5 million COMPLETION 2015

DARENT VALLEY HOSPITAL A&E DARTFORD, KENT, UK HEALTH: ACUTE The new A&E department stands proud of the main hospital façade jutting out towards the public car park, taxi and bus lane drop off. It is now clearly legible day and night as A&E and the place to dash to in emergency. The waiting area is spacious and benefits from west facing floor to ceiling solar protected glazing. At night the internal lighting makes the waiting area clear to see into, plus there is a feature red LED band at high level externally which runs around the building. The colour and logos upon it tie in with the UK highway signage for hospital driving directions. A large double door entrance lobby addressed the original unit’s issue of drafts blowing in off the Thames Estuary. The lobby is of sufficient length that both doors are rarely open at once. Reception staff are now protected from draughts and their new desk and glazed screen protects them from agitated patients and visitors. The new 75 person waiting area is complete with associated public conveniences. This is spacious and light with the emphasis clearly on providing a non confrontational environment. Waiting patients have space between themselves and can clearly see the reception staff, clinical nurses, new triage and refreshment facilities. They are also discreetly overseen by security. www.archialnorr.com NORR have been designing this new Endoscopy Unit in close collaboration with the D&G NHS User Groups, their Healthcare Planning Specialists and consultant design team since mid-2014. NORR were able to draw on the experience learned when completing the refurbishment and extension of the Endoscopy Department for Perth Royal Infirmary in 2012. Contractors must work only to figured dimensions which are to be checked on site. © INGENIUM ARCHIAL LIMITED. An Ingenium International Company .

As with the A&E department, this scheme is fully designed in REVIT and uses the ADB software to create all room data sheets and internal elevations showing exact positioning of every item of FF&E. This allows incredibly accurate space and cost planning. Overall the unit has a floor area of 1050m² to one level with a further 50m² beneath accommodating Plant & Comms rooms. The whole unit is to be built on steel stilts so as to tie in with existing first floor level. This best suits other departments within the hospital that may need to wheel in patients or equipment trolleys. The internal layout allows for full gender separation beyond the waiting area and until clothed again in Stage 2 recovery. There are 5 procedure rooms, 4 identically sized and 1 larger to cope with more complex operations and scanning equipment. The 5 procedure rooms are linked with a rear staff only corridor to the new decontamination suite where 4 new AER washers are to be installed now, future proofed to take a 5th AER when forecasted demand requires. The Healthcare Planners and Endoscopy Manager have determined the annual and projected increasing throughputs of patients and endoscopes servicing.

NUCLEAR MEDICINE DEPARTMENT GARTNAVEL GENERAL HOSPITAL, GLASGOW, UK HEALTH: ACUTE The creation of a new Nuclear Medicine suite at Gartnavel Hospital accommodating three new gamma cameras with associated patient and staff accommodation including a PACS suite serving NHS GG&C storing digital images including CT and MRI scans and a white cell labelling lab. The floor area of the existing accommodation was smaller than the area schedule provided by the User Group; this led to the development of a rigorous plan maximising the available space whilst making use of existing service locations, giving the treatment and patient areas natural light and ventilation while forming a service spine in the centre of the plan. The Consultant Physicist wrote: ‘I know that this was a difficult project technically with the installation of heavy items of equipment into a first floor setting. All of the technical issues have been resolved and the gamma cameras are operating well. The department is particularly attractive aesthetically which is testimony to the designs skills and attention to detail provided. More importantly the department is functioning well which is largely attributable to the care which was taken to understand and implement the work flow considerations. We have had a significant number of visitors to the department to date, all of whom have been extremely complimentary.’

EASTERHOUSE COMMUNITY HEALTH CENTRE GLASGOW, UK HEALTH: PRIMARY CARE This project was the refurbishment of an existing Health Centre and Mental Health Resource Centre and a new build extension to the existing building. A new link building between the existing Health Centre and the adjacent Mental Health Resource Centre was created. The conceptual approach for the extension and remodelling was the creation of a rendered wall which unified the appearance of the centre into one building. Behind this wall a new link building provides additional accommodation and acts as a hub for redefined circulation routes. The new build elements capture a series of courtyard garden spaces which provide amenity and social spaces for the building users and acts as orientation points within the facility.

This wall allowed essentially three buildings to read as one and it 2004 NHS Scotland Environment, captured courtyard spaces which are now secure and an asset to users Estates and Facilities Annual Design and staff. Awards, runner-up

CLIENT NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde/ HUB West SCALE 4500m² VALUE £10 million COMPLETION 2016

MARYHILL HEALTH CENTRE GLASGOW, UK HEALTH: PRIMARY CARE The main focus of the brief was to create a forward looking, modern and relaxed residential accommodation, for elderly people, some with dementia, who wish to live within a facility capable of providing 24 hour live-in care within an attractive, safe and secure environment. The facility comprises 64 en-suite bedrooms complimented by activity, lounge and dining spaces, hairdressing salon, reminiscence area, assisted bathroom and shower facilities, ancillary accommodation such as dedicated kitchen and laundry facilities and staff facilities. The plan and elevational treatment is a study in proportion and scale which has informed the materials chosen, a subtle blend of natural and neutral tones of light brick and white render. The south facing courtyard elevations have vertical larch cladding which will weather to mirror the natural form of the mature trees. This larch is separated by areas of glazing in a simple repetitive pattern with both enclosed within an aluminium clad canopy which holds the communal day spaces and provides solar shading and shelter for the residents. The simple L-shaped plan opens the building up to the south affording an open garden space towards the existing mature landscape. The external space has been carefully considered for the enjoyment of the residents. Paths which loop around sensory gardens with a series of signal markers enable residents to maintain way finding through recognition. The interior has vibrant colours used throughout, diluting the clinical and institutional feel frequently associated with traditional care facilities. Memory boxes are inset adjacent to bedroom doors and colour coding is used as way finding. The spaces are bright, airy and welcoming with corridors broken in their midpoint by day spaces allowing daylight to penetrate deep into the building. At the end of each corridor are destination points providing focus and daylight as well as allowing views onto the gardens.

ENFIELD JOINT SERVICE CENTRE LONDON, UK HEALTH: PRIMARY CARE The brief required the Enfield Joint Service Centre to be a high quality building, housing contemporary community based services for the benefit of the immediately surrounding neighbourhood, including public Library (replacing the current Library building on the site), General Practice health facility, dental surgery and community hall. The new library serves a population within a 1 mile radius and has the potential for 180,000 visits per annum. The community space can be utilised for flexible community activities for its users and has replaced the old facilities. The GP practice and Dental services provides for a number of GPs along with all necessary accommodation to support the delivery of high quality primary and dental care. It has been designed with patient accessibility in mind as well as dignity for patients, and provides a safe and secure work environment for staff. It offers flexibility in its design to provide a sustainable delivery of healthcare.

CLIENT NHS Grampian SCALE 21,555 m² VALUE £134 million (Bundled costs in conjunction with Anchor Cancer Centre) COMPLETION Ongoing

BAIRD FAMILY HOSPITAL ABERDEEN, UK HEALTH: PRIMARY CARE The development of The Baird Family Hospital will bring a range of health services together in one facility. The general design approach shall be to create a truly inclusive environment which must be designed to the highest standards, taking into account specific infrastructure opportunities and constraints to create a high quality facility. In essence the building will replace the maternity hospital including the Aberdeen Centre for Reproductive Medicine and Neonatal Unit, and include a range of other services including gynaecology in patients/ day cases/ out- patients, breast screening and symptomatic out-patient and in patient breast services. The Name Baird derives from Dugald Baird and his family who have historically contributed to both medicine and healthcare in Aberdeen and the UK, but also relates to the fact that some of the services will be provided to both men and women and families will use the facility. The building has been identified within the NHS Framework agreed with Aberdeen City Council since 2008. NORR were engaged through AECOM to provide a ‘reference design’ as part of the ‘Technical Advisor’ role under the NPD procurement route. This required a thorough interrogation of both the brief and the site. During the initial stages, there was little information available on the clinical brief. The building is concrete frame to provide clear space for services above ceilings, and spacing of columns are set to provide maximum spans, thus allowing flexibility for non loadbearing partition locations. The design required a clinical adjacency on the first floor, however on the ground floor it was envisaged that a ‘street’ would provide a means for public to orientate themselves within the building. The building was then further terraced to the South. The final reference design answered the clients brief and design statement, and was on target for the Gross Internal floor area, therefore coming within the target cost required for OBC approval.

ANCHOR CANCER CENTRE ABERDEEN, UK HEALTH: PRIMARY CARE The development of The ANCHOR Centre on the Foresterhill Health Campus will provide out-patient and day patient services for Oncology and Haematology patients. In addition, there will be aseptic pharmacy provision and research and teaching accommodation, in addition to a CT Scanner. The design approach will be to create an inclusive environment which must be designed to the highest standards, taking into account specific infrastructure opportunities and constraints to create a high quality facility. The name ANCHOR derives from the abbreviation of Aberdeen North Centre for Haematology, Oncology and Radiotherapy. The ANCHOR Centre has been planned for some time and has been developing on a staged basis- the new raditotherapy Centre at Foresterhill completed in 2013 being the first stage of the development of this Centre, along with new oncology and haematology in patient ward accommodation in the Matthew Hay Building opened in 2012. The proposed new building will replace existing facilities which are in poor condition and have no potential for growth. The project will include the demolition of the existing eye clinic, the services for which are being relocated elsewhere. NORR were engaged through AECOM to provide a ‘reference design’ as part of the ‘Technical Advisor’ role under the NPD procurement route. This required a thorough interrogation of both the brief and the site. During the initial stages, there was little information available on the clinical brief. A number of clinical workshops were undertaken with both the NHS project team and the various stakeholders, with comments then incorporated into the design and interrogated further by the Project team. A Planning in Principle Application was made, and due to the number and complexity of NHS projects on the campus, there was considerable time spent in dialogue with the Planning Authority. In terms of site complexities, there was the further complications of a steam main, future MPHW line and future buildings to consider. The final reference design answered the clients brief and design statement, and was on target for the Gross Internal floor area, therefore coming within the target cost required for OBC approval.

POLLOK HEALTH CARE / CIVIC REALM GLASGOW, UK HEALTH: PRIMARY CARE The brief required the incorporation of community facilities – a library, learning centre, nursery, citizens advice bureau, job creation offices, museum, cafe and stress centre while incorporating the refurbishment of an existing health centre and leisure centre. The initial idea was to create a bridge between the community and the new shopping centre via a one stop social, health and education hub, we chose to design this space in a recognised typology of the shopping mall which would be both familiar and comfortable to the local community. The spaces within the realm space pivot around the central high space and one stop reception, from this point a visitor can orientate themselves easily through visual links with all areas. The primary vista addresses the new Health Centre entrance which is approached via a ramp and public cafe. Orientation throughout is enhanced by bold graphics and clear sightlines. CLIENT BUPA Care Homes (ANS) SCALE 64 units / 3,250 m² VALUE £4.3 million COMPLETION 2013

BUPA CARE HOME BEARSDEN, GLASGOW, UK HEALTH: CARE HOMES The main focus of the brief was to create a forward looking, modern and relaxed residential accomodation, for elderly people, some with dementia, who wish to live within a facility capable of providing 24 hour live-in care within an attractive, safe and secure environment. The £4.3m facility comprises 64 en-suite bedrooms complimented by activity, lounge and dining spaces, hairdressing salon, reminiscence area, assisted bathroom and shower facilities, ancillary accommodation such as dedicated kitchen and laundry facilities and staff facilities.

SMALL ANIMAL HOSPITAL GLASGOW, UK FURTHER AND HIGHER EDUCATION The Small Animal Hospital’s great triumph is the unique and ingenious way it is set into it’s sensitive landscape, with a sweeping grassed roof creating a new hillside in this beautiful context. The rooftop ‘lantern’ and the boldly defined entrance do however, ensure that this superb building declares its presence and scale. This is a highly complex work of architecture which sets new standards in the design of buildings for veterinary medicine.

Gold Best Public Building Roses Design Awards 2010

A Bauder green roof technology was employed, with membrane, insulation, egg crates, pebbles, soil and grass. Gabion cladding ‘holds’ the structure and emphasises the relationship between ground and building. Consulting rooms are separated from the private hospital space, ensuring a direct relationship between staff and clients and emphasising the desire to maintain an open and welcoming building.

The Bryan Munford Award for Archial Building of the Year 2010

Overall the project is an excellent example of how to build well within a sensitive context.

NATIONAL BIOLOGICS MANUFACTURING CENTRE DARLINGTON, UK PUBLIC BUILDINGS: SCIENCE + RESEARCH NORR’s Newcastle office, Since January 2014 (From RIBA stage D/3 onwards) have been undertaking detailed Architectural services for the Centre for Process Innovation and Interserve Construction for the new provision of Class II research laboratories and office accommodation in Darlington. The project includes the fit out of all 3 floors of the building incorporating a range of laboratory and office environments together with office accommodation and lecture space integrated into the building. NORR are design team leaders undertaking the project fully on Revit (BIM - exceeding in parts what is expected of Level 2). All disciplines including sub-contractors are working in the same 3d Revit platform and although its not been requested the level of detail would greatly assist the end users with an asset management tool to utilise in the future. Together with the design team we are providing co-ordinated 3d room data sheets defining fit out items, M&E, supplies of purified water, Nitrogen, clean steam, O2, Co2 and all the required services expected of a laboratory environment. Certain laboratories have VHP (Vapour Hydrogen Peroxide) requirements within making air seal lines and lining systems of paramount importance. The Class 2 laboratories are also fully visible and glazed to the teaching areas whilst still maintaining all the necessary controls. Air locks and step over barrier and security measures have been seamlessly integrated into the scheme and the layout, each floor is circa 1600m2. NBMC will be used by companies to help cut risks involved in developing new products in the growing biopharmaceutical market. NORR are providing Design leadership for the project and are working with a team that includes specialist process engineers to ensure everything is fully coordinated and integrated into the overall design.

Making Life Better Through Intelligent Architecture

The use of BIM technologies and intelligent, interactive modelling is greatly assisting the co-ordination process with a team that are spread throughout the UK and as far away as Italy. The Centre for Process Innovation (CPI), which has bases at Wilton and Sedgefield and is part of the Government’s High Value Manufacturing Catapult, was chosen to establish and manage the new centre. Bio-pharmaceuticals has grown rapidly over the last ten years as a market for vaccines and other medicines that are created by biological processes, not chemicals. CPI’s team of scientists, engineers and sector specialists will help companies of all sizes develop, demonstrate, prototype and scale-up their ideas. Mr. Bagshaw said the NBMC was an “excellent opportunity to bring industry, academia and the funding agencies together to create the best possible environment.” The investment has been made through the healthcare industry, CPI, Darlington Council & TVU and NBMC is part of the Government’s ‘Strategy for UK Life Sciences’ launched in 2011 to ensure the UK remains competitive on an international level.

BIM CAPABLITY At NORR we have always been committed to employing the latest CAD technology on our projects. As of 2016, 90% of projects are delivered on the REVIT platform to Level 2 BIM compliance. Our adoption of Revit Architecture as our standard application for implementing BIM is a natural progression as we seek to deliver greater certainty in design, cost and programme whilst producing enhanced visuals and construction data as a response to increasingly complex information requests. Cost control is improved with quickly generated Schedules of Accommodation, area analysis and materials schedules.

CLINICAL PLANNING AND ADB DATABASE We actively promote the use of Revit and ADB within this sector which is a big attraction to clients and contractors alike. This provides added innovation to the projects that utilise this software. It positively assists User Group engagement through the use of models, 3D Revit design tools and ADB room data sheet presentation. Contractors believe it allows them to deliver a more streamlined package whilst the intuitive 3D output is appreciated by the clients as it allows the lay person to better understand what it is they are getting. The ADB (Activity Database) is Department of Health software and is the NHS briefing tool of choice, room data sheets are updated through a series of 1:50 stakeholder meetings on each project. Other useful outcomes of this coordinated process are quantity scheduling of equipment and services for the project team, enabling improving efficiency of facility commissioning programmes.
