AVIATION EXPERIENCE At NORR, we believe the design process for transport systems presents one of the greatest challenges in the industry with its focus not just on customer experience, but on cost imperatives, alongside evolving best practice. Innovation in environmental responsibility is a key factor in all we do and is frequently the driver in our designs. Our experience within the aviation sector in particular spans over 20 years. Our Aviation team draws on experience from direct operational experience with an airport authority in addition to broad technical expertise. Our projects have frequently involved working within buildings which continue to be operational. Our reputation for collaborative client relationships and our commitment to the highest standards mean clients return to us again and again to help them meet their objectives.

Edinburgh Airport Search Expansion Project GIP (GLOBAL INFRASTRUCTURE PARTNERS) EDINBURGH, SCOTLAND NORR was commissioned by GIP to undertake a new extension to the south of its existing airport terminal building. This extension is required primarily to increase the retail provision at Edinburgh airport by 3,000m². While the new extension will house a new security facility and the very latest airport security technology, the primary driver behind the project is to increase retail income by adding 3,000m² of additional retail, as well as improving passenger routes though the terminal, to increase passenger exposure to both the existing and proposed retail and catering offers at Edinburgh Airport. On completion, all of the landside catering offers will now see 100% passenger exposure as passengers make their way past ‘en route’ to the new search facility. There will be a new 2,000m² ‘walk through’ World Duty Free unit at the exit from search, therefore ensuring 100% passenger exposure, as passengers will have to pass though the shop before they get through to the departure lounge and departure gates. A further 1,000m² of additional retail and catering units are to be provided on the ground floor of the extension and in the previous WDF unit in the Departure lounge on the first floor of the existing terminal building.

Temporary International Arrivals Edinburgh Airport BA A EDINBURGH, SCOTLAND In November 2014, NORR was commissioned to design a new temporary international arrivals facility. This project involved the following key elements of airport design: New 2,000m2 single storey building incorporating: • Immigration Hall • Baggage Reclaim Hall • Customs facility • Associated offices and toilet facilities In this project it was critical that passenger access to the stands was maintained for the duration of the construction works. NORR was able to assist the airport with this by coordinating the design team to come up with solutions that made this possible. The programme was critical as the airport had a deadline for the new facility to become operational, in time for a new airline to start flying to and from Edinburgh Airport.

Value Park Garage Toronto Pearson Int. Airport GREATER TORONTO AIRPORTS AUTHORITY TORONTO, ON, CANADA The Parking Facility was developed in two phases. Phase 1 included an enclosed pedestrian link over Viscount Road to the People Mover Station, vertical transportation systems, development of surface parking and development of site services to accommodate the finished facility. Phase 2 provided for build-out of the garage to a capacity of 8,500 vehicles. The architectural character of the facility is designed to provide continuity with the general architectural theme for the Terminal Development Project and in particular with the People Mover Station. The two-phase development was designed with a very clear and simple linear circulation system. The prime elements are linked by a central circulation spine running parallel to a light well. The floor plates of the garage on either side of the spine are symmetrical about its axis. This layout provides for efficient area utilisation with an average area per stall ranging from 343 sf to 350 sf. Parking planning for this project was provided by Walker Parking Consultant.

COST £2,000,000 NORR was awarded a Design and Build Contract in September 2000 to refurbish and expand the check-in facilities at Birmingham Airport’s main T1 terminal. Work was required to be completed in time for the 2001 Easter holiday traffic. The project involved the construction of an extension to the terminal, providing 12 additional check-in desks while also extending the existing baggage handling and flight information systems. The site was extremely constricted, hemmed in on one side by a multi-storey car park which was askew both horizontally and vertically, and on another by the existing terminal. The work was carried out while maintaining the existing T1 operations and included the provision of temporary escape measures from the terminal, while an existing first floor route was extended and a fire exit stair relocated.

East End Connector, Glasgow Airport BA A GLASGOW, SCOTLAND NORR was commissioned by BAA Glasgow in 2003 to look at various options for covering the pedestrian link between Glasgow Airport’s Main Terminal Building (T1) and Terminal 2. As part of this project, NORR was asked to investigate alternative lightweight tent or tensile solutions for the canopy, as opposed to the previous steel and glass design. The chosen option was a cable-stayed structure, in which a series of elliptical steel CHS frames serve to support the cables and intermediate ribs which in turn act as the deck to receive the 6m wide PVC coating which forms the roof of the connector. This design allowed for a reduction in the number of ground penetrations required for the structure, which stretches for 85m between the terminals. At either end the canopy is met by a portal which frames the way into each terminal building.

SOMERSET, UK

NORR designed this unique and specialised project for Agusta Westland (AW) who was contracted directly by the Ministry of Defence to provide an integrated building solution that included complex equipment for training of Army and Royal Navy personnel in the use of the AW159 Lynx Wildcat helicopter. The programme for this 3-storey project was unique and evolutionary as it represented a new era in Defence Training whereby Aviators and Land based personnel training for multiple branches of the Armed Forces were brought together in a single training building located at Royal Navy Air Station (RNAS), Yeovilton. The facility provides the highest quality of training to aircrews and ground crews and is equipped to provide a wide range of synthetic training covering the aircrafts mechanical, avionic and weapon systems. The facility has two Full Motion Simulators, a Flight Training Device and a Cockpit Procedure Trainer. All of the simulators are capable of delivering Army or Royal Navy configurations and mission training. Each of the Full Motion Simulators have six degrees of freedom to provide the acceleration sensations associated with helicopter flying together with a visual system providing highly realistic and cost effective training. Physically the simulators were separated from the building structure and foundations to ensure complete isolation against any vibration or motion being transmitted to other occupied areas within the building. The training centre contain a suite of briefing rooms, integrated electronic classrooms and a learning management system providing training for the Army and Royal Navy.

CAE

COMPLE TION DATE 2006

BURGESS HILL, WEST SUSSEX, UK

COST ÂŁ5,000,000 CAE is a leading provider of simulation and training services for civil aviation and defence customers worldwide. The brief was to provide a high quality facility adjacent to their existing UK headquarters in Burgess Hill to enable their civil aviation business to expand. The site is located on the fringe of an industrial estate and is bounded to the west by the A273. The new building accommodates 12 new flight simulators, ancillary facilities and a cafe link to the existing CAE building. Careful consideration was given to the requirements of the new simulators in the design of the building with particular attention to its structural principles, the relationship it would have with the existing building and surrounding area together with sustainability issues such as natural ventilation. Given the prominent location of the site adjacent to the A273 and the high quality of the existing building designed by Lifschutz Davidson and completed in 1999, the Mid-Sussex District Council took a keen interest in the design process and emphasised the need for a new building that would respond sensitively to the existing building whilst being a high quality building in its own right. Internally the new building is split into four distinct areas; a glazed atrium, a two-storey central administration core and two large open halls each side, both large enough for four simulators. A further four simulators were accommodated in an extension to the existing simulator hall.
