PROJECT EXPERIENCE Making Life Better Through Intelligent Architecture

CLIENT Chivas Brothers VALUE £25 million

DALMUNACH DISTILLERY CARRON, UK COMMERCIAL: INDUSTRIAL + ENERGY

COMPLETION 2014

Good Whisky is all about the bringing together of Malted Barley and water, we felt the building should somehow reflect this.

AWARDS Winner of RIAS Awards 2015

The concept orders the building into the three major parallel components that in roof plan resemble three heads of barley offset by the creation of an adjacent Lochan which represents the water.

Winner of RIBA National Award 2015

This approach allows us to do the following:

– The 2 outer elements curve out to provide ‘welcoming arms’ to the main entrance – The Still House is housed in a distinctive glazed structure with adjacent Lochan to provide a memorable and distinctive feature adjacent to the site entrance i.e. you will instantly know that this is a distillery – The building addresses the existing buildings opposite to provide continuity with the past Scottish Design Awards 2015 – The former Distillery buildings are recycled to form a distinctive landform to screen both visibility and Commendation in the Commercial/ acoustically the yard area Offices Building or Project category – The simple building forms recall traditional buildings in a contemporary way AJ120 - Building of the Year nomination 2015

CLIENT Diageo SCALE 3,000 m² COMPLETION Ongoing

MORTLACH DISTILLERY BANFFSHIRE, UK COMMERICIAL: INDUSTRIAL & ENERGY Mortlach Distillery is a malt Distillery on the eastern edge of Dufftown. Its owners Diageo wish to increase its capacity and propose to achieve this by building a new production unit adjacent to the existing main distillery. Mortlach produces a very distinctive product which is largely due to a combination of its unique stills and condensing worm tubs. The new production unit will replicate this partial triple distillation process to ensure its product is exactly the same as that produced by the existing Distillery. The design makes the conscious decision to positively work with the context and topography to organise the building into 2 main levels. The upper level will be accessed from the upper Mortlach road level adjacent to the office and will be the main production level comprising Mash House, Tun Room and Still House all designed as flowing spaces arranged around a central control pod. The key relationship of Still to Worm Tub is emphasised by locating the worm tubs adjacent to the upper level with the stills behind with glazing providing glimpses from the entrance through to the stills thereby emphasising this unique stage in the process. The lower level tends to be primarily deliveries and equipment access and maintenance. This is accessed from the main service yard thereby using the building to passively separate pedestrian traffic primarily associated with the upper level from vehicle traffic associated with the lower level. The different scales and functions within the building are expressed by the twin peaked roof the lower roof expressing the Mash Tun and Washbacks while the higher roof expressing the Stills and accommodates overhead internal crane access for Still maintenance.

CLIENT The Macallan SCALE 800 m² COMPLETION 2017

MACALLAN OVERTON MORAY, UK COMMERCIAL: INDUSTRY + ENERGY The Macallan distillery was founded in 1824 by Alexander Reid, since then it has established itself as a world leader in Scotch whisky sales and its infrastructure has steadily grown through the years to support its success. The design brief for NORR was to provide additional storage and support accommodation to compliment the recently commenced expansion to the distillery’s production facilities. Due to the increased volumes of spirit being produced to meet growing and future demands for Scotch Whisky it was seen as essential to expand the on-site maturation warehouses and to establish a new filling store with associated store tanks, coopergae, engineering workshop, lab and cask store. In addition to this new staff facilities are proposed including a new amenity building and office. The design concept for the support facilities, which are sited at the prominent North West corner of the site, is derived from the agricultural farmstead typology prevalent in the area. All the more pertinent when one considers that the site itself was formerly home to the Overton Farm buildings. The proposals are envisaged as a cluster of buildings of simple form and consistent architectural language. Using a collection of buildings rather than one larger facility allows the massing to be broken up and to give the sense that development has happened more organically over time much like estate development.

CLIENT The Glenlivet Distillery SCALE 12000 m² COMPLETION 2018

THE GLENLIVET DISTILLERY, PROJECT E2 MORAY, UK COMMERCIAL: INDUSTRY + ENERGY The brief was to design a new process building in order to provide additional capacity over 2 equal phases. The additional buildings are to be discreetly positioned so not to adversely impact on the existing visitor experience of the distillery which will continue to be based in and around the current process buildings. As part of the works the project will also take the opportunity to improve the visual appearance of some of the existing buildings, landscape and access. The development will also include the replacing of the existing Bioplant adjacent to the River Livet, approximately 0.5km to the east of the main site and re-cladding the existing evaporator building. The process building is a comparatively large building of which form and massing are largely dictated by the specifics of the whisky making process. Following initial studies it was felt that the least intrusive and most discreet location for the building was to the west of the existing warehousing. These buildings are of sufficient length and height to screen the new building and given the topography of the rising ground immediately behind there is an opportunity to further screen the building by cutting into the hill. The building is elevated as a simple honest industrial building in muted tones of grey to minimise the visual impact on the landscape of the Cairngorm National Park.

CLIENT Chivas Brothers

GLEN KEITH DISTILLERY SPEYSIDE, UK COMMERICIAL: INDUSTRIAL & ENERGY NORR was commissioned to work on new yeast labs as part of the ongoing refurbishing of Glen Keith Distillery. This work forms part of the recommissioning work at Glen Keith to bring it back into production following a 20 year mothballing. Production is due to recommence by the end of 2012. The Distillery was founded by Chivas Brothers in 1957 and was originally built as a three still layout for triple distillation (the first in the world to use gas fired stills) and converted to double distillation with the addition of three more stills in 1970. The new facility will continue to produce single malt and blended whisky and will be fitted out with up to date process lines and equipment ensuring the history of the company continues well into the future.
