CLIENT Kirkintilloch Baptist Church SCALE 415m × 32m VALUE £1.8 million COMPLETION 2006
KIRKINTILLOCH BAPTIST CHURCH KIRKINTILLOCH, UK ECCLESIASTICAL This project brief involved the demolition of the existing church sanctuary to allow the creation of a new, larger building on the same site. This was achieved by positioning the sanctuary/altar space on the long dimension, as opposed to the end, to facilitate unity between the pastoral team and the congregation. The new coffee shop and kitchen area has a street frontage and provides the Church’s immediate contact with the community. Substantial alteration and refurbishment was carried out to the ancillary church buildings: a stone building (formerly a bookshop) on the corner of Shamrock Street and Townhead Street; a 1960s brick extension and a 1970s brick building, which is used as a lesser hall/games room). The completed development forms a rich mix of practical and celebratory spaces for the congregation to enjoy and has created an iconic architectural statement in the centre of Kirkintilloch.

CLIENT Bradford MDC VALUE £15 million COMPLETION 2006
MULTI-FAITH CENTRE BRADFORD
The project brief called for the design and construction of a building to house a permanent exhibition celebrating the influence and diversity of faith within Bradford. The design team worked in close collaboration with the client in the development of proposals and securing of funding packages that enabled the project to be realised. It is celebration of the Multi-Faith Centre that exists in the North of England. A two storey steel and glass bridge provides a link between the Cathedral Precinct and St Peter’s House - a Victorian building refurbished to house the exhibition and offices for the local council. The bridge, positioned directly opposite the Cathedral is the public entrance to the exhibition areas and provides a strong link to the town centre. A restrained palette of materials – glazing, timber cladding and zinc roofing accentuate the lightness and transparency of the new structure which contrasts with the predominantly stone built context. A variety of material and form that mirrors the variety in faith that it encompasses.

CLIENT West Kilbride Community Initiative Ltd SCALE 550 m² VALUE £1.2 million COMPLETION 2012 AWARDS Scottish Civic Trust, My Place Awards - High Commendation RIAS Awards 2013, Architecture Category - High Commendation RIAS Awards 2013, Conservation Category - High Commendation
BARONY CENTRE WEST KILBRIDE, UK MIXED USE NORR was commissioned by West Kilbride Community Initiative Ltd to provide architectural services, from concept stage to completion, for the redevelopment of the existing Barony Church into an arts and crafts centre. The completed building is now the focal point of the wider arts and crafts initiative in the town providing an exhibition gallery, retail area, production workshop, and café. The existing church was C listed and of some architectural merit. It was therefore considered important to retain its basic exterior form and features. Conceptually it was important to clearly define the new components of the building. This was achieved by selecting clean modern materials and by particular detailing at junctions. The new sandstone on the extension is separated from the existing church by a recessed zinc panel, the café glazing emerges from a rebate in the centre of an existing stone corner buttress, and the curved projecting workshop is recessed around its perimeter and glazed to the sloping roof ridges above. From the beginning of the design process, and throughout construction, the client was intimately involved in the project. By fully engaging with the client and clearly communicating progress at each decisive stage, the group were enabled to maintain ownership of the project throughout. The completed building provides an excellent integrated space for producing, exhibiting and selling locally produced arts and crafts work. Furthermore it serves to promote the town’s wider arts and crafts agenda by providing a stimulating and rewarding environment for conducting these activities. In summary we believe that the Barony Centre is an exemplary retrofit project. It retains the basic form and commendable architectural features of an existing church building and through delicate external restoration, comprehensive internal alterations, contrasting but sensitive new insertions, and clear and clean detailing produces a fresh and exciting environment for West Kilbride’s commendable arts and crafts initiative.
CLIENT Martyrs’ CoS SCALE 800 m²
MARTYRS’ CHURCH OF SCOTLAND TOWNHEAD, SCOTLAND ECCLESIASTICAL
VALUE £1.35 million
Pollokshields Congregational Church, this inner city congregation’s existing building was too large for their needs and difficult to maintain.
DESIGN 2009
We worked closely with the church to design a building which would be recognised in the community and adequately meet the needs of a mission focused congregation. The proposed church takes a prominent position on the corner of the site and provides multi-purpose accommodation, including a café, conference room and games hall. In order to finance the new build, the church is considering selling part of their existing site for residential development. We have helped them through this process and secured planning approval for a suitable residential scheme.

CLIENT Bearsden Baptist Church SCALE 440 m² VALUE £600k
BEARSDEN BAPTIST CHURCH GLASGOW, SCOTLAND ECCLESIASTICAL Bearsden Baptist Church outgrew its existing sandstone building and required a completely new sanctuary to complement the ancillary spaces which were accommodated within the existing building. The large area of glazing on the gable elevation allows natural light to flood into the building creating a bright and airy sanctuary space. A large steel beam spans the width of the sanctuary, providing an uninterrupted view of the focal area on the dias at the front. The result is a modern flexible facility offering an open, welcoming front to the street.
CLIENT Bothwell Evangelical Church SCALE 250 m² VALUE £150,000
BOTHWELL EVANGELICAL CHURCH BOTHWELL, SCOTLAND ECCLESIASTICAL This small congregation increasingly found their existing accommodation in an old burgh hall limited the extent of their activities. We worked through the design process with the church and proposed a new sanctuary extension. Although situated to the rear of the premises, the new sanctuary is bright, modern, spacious and flexible. The project was delivered on a very tight budget for a relatively small congregation and was implemented in a phased programme of a new-build and refurbishment. The building won a coveted RIBA Award among other plaudits from the local people, despite being uncompromisingly modern.
