The Ropewalk, Nuneaton, UK Making Life Better Through Intelligent Architecture
EXPERIENCE NORR has significant experience in both multi-storey and surface car park design. We work for a number of leading car park providers including the likes of Q-Parks and NCP to deliver car park solutions throughout the UK. In addition to this we have been commissioned on a number of out of town retail parks to look at car park rationalisation and replanning to provide better operational layouts and increased efficiency to free up space for additional development. Our approach involves the sensible planning often in accordance with the Park Mark standard to provide clear and legible routes for both pedestrians and vehicular movements through the site. Vehicle movements are carefully tested using the latest vehicle tracking software to ensure that there are no pinch points within the carpark or any areas where vehicles cross into other carriageways.

Former Assay Office Site CORDWELL PORTOBELLO LTD SHEFFIELD, UK
A new multi-storey car park with 531 car parking spaces and a retail unit to part of the ground floor. The car park to be occupied by QParks the construction of which commenced in early 2008 and was completed July 2009 by ROK Construction. The Q-Park facade declares the building’s sustainability. Referred to as the Emerald car park, the new building’s laminated glazing panels, which were developed by a local artist, glow in various shades of green when the sun shines on them and when lit from within at night. The attractive “woven” articulated planes on the facade contribute to the building’s striking street presence while allowing natural light and ventilation to penetrate the structure. Yes this is the right building and they are punched metal mesh panels on a weaving metal frame. The glazed panels at the corner were developed by a local artist as part of a public art contribution required by the planners. Its height and shape consider the surrounding context and topography, with a scale that reflects and compliments the nearby buildings.

LSC Headquarters PARKCOM PROPERTIES COVENTRY, UK
NORR designed and implemented a unique masterplan for Parkside, a major 60 acre Business Park in Coventry. Situated on the business park is the new headquarters for the Learning & Skills Council. A distinctive central atrium provides an attractive yet practical focus and the building has been designed to project a strong corporate identity. The 6,500 m² scheme has high quality finishes, is fully air conditioned and designed to be environmentally friendly and energy efficient. The scheme relied upon an efficient under croft parking layout and a linked decked concrete framed car park to the rear elevation. The layout made best use of the site and maximised the space available for the headquarters building by hiding the parking to areas that were least visually obtrusive. The small decked area proved to be a cost effective solution costing in the region of £8.5k per car parking space.

Toronto Pearson Airport, Canada
Toronto Pearson Car Park TORONTO PEARSON AIRPORT TORONTO, CANADA
Developed in two phases, this parking facility for Canada’s busiest airport has capacity for 8,500 vehicles. It is the largest precast concrete, parking garage in Canada and the second largest parking garage overall. While this is undoubtedly a massive facility, it is animated by a textured material palette of custom cast, concrete panels and open grills that differentiate the various façade orientations, as well as highlighting ramps and stair towers, breaking up the overall mass into smaller components. A physical connection links the fourth floor of the garage to the airport via an enclosed pedestrian bridge. Key to the building’s function is its passive environmental design. While the majority of large scale, multi-storey, parking garages incorporate a substantial mechanical ventilation system to remove exhaust fumes, here, the ‘open’ horizontal slotted form of the external walls, along with the central atrium, promote the through-flow of fresh air: this completely eliminates any requirement for mechanical ventilation. This innovation drastically reduces the energy requirements of the building and removes all operation and maintenance costs of any such active ventilation system. In addition, all storm water collected from the roof and vehicle run-off is captured and filtered through storage tanks to remove sediment before being discharged into the storm sewer.

Fletton Quays PETERBOROUGH INVESTMENT PARTNERSHIP PETERBOROUGH, UK
We are currently on site with two MSCP’s within Peterborough City centre, one being in a very prominent location as part of a wider regeneration masterplan. The site is constrained on all sides so we had to work very hard on ensuring efficient proportions were maintained and design aesthetic was maximised. The carpark’s are all designed to the current Park Mark standards and local authority requirements. Once completed they will add 600 spaces to this part of Peterborough. The cladding to the main gables of the larger carpark will see the re-instatement of a historical mural that once stood on a nearby building. Due to the proximity of the 900 year old cathedral the materials, aesthetic and lighting design have been carefully considered. For instance we are using a mixture of stone, corten steel and wire mesh to create a layered and high quality façade.
Airport Car Park HALIFAX INTERNATIONAL NOVA SCOTIA, CANADA
NORR was engaged to design and construct a more efficient, higher capacity parking garage and consolidated rental car facility, located near to the main terminal building. Creating over 2,400 new parking spaces over five levels, NORR’s design situated the rental car facility at ground level and passenger parking on levels above. All levels are connected via high speed ramps to the entry and exit points located at opposite ends of the building; this facilitates the most efficient vehicle movement within and around the parking garage. Employees working at multiple exit kiosks and automated pay points reduce wait times on entry and exit. Using pre-cast concrete for the garage structure was a cost effective choice. However, while the structural frame and internal floor slabs are of a relatively standard nature, NORR designed feature walls for the north and south ends of the garage that incorporate a basket-weave pattern. These unique panels were fabricated off-site, along with the rest of the parking garage structure, totalling over 2,200 pre-cast concrete pieces. The parking garage is connected to the terminal building via a new 70 m long pedestrian bridge and vertical lifts and stairs. NORR’s scope of work also included a surface-level, long-term parking lot in addition to the development of wayfinding signage from the roadway network to the garage.
