Making Life Better Through Intelligent Architecture

SCIENCE & RESEARCH EXPERIENCE NORR’s Science and Research team has over 40 years of experience of working with clients to develop site Masterplans and realise those through the development of multiple individual headquarters buildings, research laboratories, bio-Incubators and support facilities. These span the bio science, pharmaceutical, engineering, nuclear, education, medical and commercial sectors. Throughout this period, our work in the sector has been continuous and this has allowed us to keep pace with our client’s evolving needs. We take our experiences and lessons learnt forward from one project to the next, constantly seeking to improve ourselves and in turn, the buildings and facilities that underpin the academic and commercial requirements of the Science and Research that will take place within them. NORR’s portfolio of completed Science based projects is extensive and possibly unique in that it includes the development of site Masterplans and the delivery of multiple whole buildings within those. That experience began with the development of Cambridge Science Park, which was established principally to meet Government requests for a greater interchange of ideas, people and facilities between universities and the hightechnology industry. Our original commission with Trinity College, Cambridge involved us in all negotiations that led to the submission for Outline Planning Consent in 1970. The first planning permission was granted in 1971 and the park officially opened in 1975. More recently NORR developed the masterplan and development guidelines for the Babraham Research Campus at the Babraham Institute. The campus will ultimately provide approximately 24,000 m2 of bio-incubator research facilities set within the Greenbelt and a Conservation Area and we have been engaged in the delivery of these facilities continually since 2003. Science based buildings are, by their very nature, complex in terms of their requirements. NORR recognises this and believes that our integrated approach to their delivery ensures that our buildings are delivered with the clear purpose - to support Science.

RESOURCES ROAD LABORATORY RENOVATION TORONTO, ONTARIO, CANADA PUBLIC BUILDINGS: GOVERNMENT NORR’s assignment at Resources Road for the Ontario Ministry of Health involves three projects rolled into one: creation of a Level 3 Medical Diagnostic Containment Laboratory, base building upgrades and the development of an overall space and a long range functional planning strategy. The primary goal of the client, Ontario Realty Corporation (ORC), was to immediately create a new CL3 Medical Diagnostic Containment Laboratory (MDCL) within the existing building shell. For this objective to be realized, a complex program of operational requirements had to be distilled into a phased construction strategy. The base building issues addressed by the project included code deficiencies, curtain wall replacement and asbestos removal. Implementation of the project was undertaken in sequential phases in order for the building to remain operational during construction. A long term functional program was developed to reflect current and future activities at the complex and provide greater operational flexibility. The CL3 T.B. testing laboratory was an extremely complex construction project which provides MOHLTC with the option to either either fully occupy renovated space or occupy the swing space that was provided as part of the program in order to gain a generic emergency response laboratory.

BABRAHAM RESEARCH CAMPUS BABRAHAM INSTITUTE PUBLIC BUILDINGS: SCIENCE + RESEARCH During 2003, in close consultation with South Cambridgeshire District Coucil, NORR developed the masterplan and guidelines for the Babraham Research Campus at the Babraham Institute. The campus will ultimately provide approximately 24,000 m² of bio-incubator research facilities set within the Greenbelt and a Conser vation Area. KEY CONSIDERATIONS INCLUDE: — Sight lines of existing listed buildings — Building heights of new development — Re-establishment of the Country Park — Green Travel Plan to reduce car parking on this sensitive site — Site access, circulation and car parking — Site security — Archaeology — Infrastructure

Early 2011, as part of our ongoing appointment and following a funding award by the Government, NORR embarked on “Project 44” at Babraham Research Campus. This work is ongoing and has presently delivered a number of Laboratory Buildings, Bio- Incubator facilities and site infrastructure projects with individual project values of up to £9 million. There are a number of sensitivities relating to the Babraham site and within this timeframe the delivery of these new buildings was only made possible through our close working with South Cambridgeshire District Council Planning Authority, with whom, since establishing the design guidelines for the site, we have developed an excellent working relationship.

CLIENT Scottish Agricultural Science Agency SCALE 11,000 m² VALUE £25 million COMPLETION 2005 BREEAM Very Good

SCOTTISH AGRICULTURAL SCIENCE AGENCY HQ SCOTTISH ASSOCIATION FOR MARINE SCIENCES, EDINBURGH, UK PUBLIC BUILDINGS: SCIENCE + RESEARCH The new Headquarters for the Scottish Agricultural Science Agency (SASA), an agency of the Scottish Executive, is located on an eight-hectare site within the Edinburgh Greenbelt. The 11,000 m² building comprises new state of the art laboratories with associated office space, conference facilities, library, staff facilities and 2500 m² of glasshouses. The building is a maximum of three storeys in height, and takes advantage of its site by nestling at the bottom of a slope, which reduces its visual impact. It was designed to strengthen the links between departments, and reflects SASA’s current ‘campus’ style facilities. Extensive landscaping seeks to strengthen the local topography through a variety of measures, such as landform, tree planting and gabion walls. The form and materials of the building – metal cladding, timber and render, with curved narrow profiles presented to the road – take their cue from agricultural architecture. Curtain walling and stone filled gabions soften the agricultural aesthetic and give presence to the public face of the agency.

SCIENTIFIC SUPPORT UNIT WAKEFIELD, UK PUBLIC BUILDINGS: POLICE + CUSTODIAL

VALUE £13.5 million

New offices and laboratories for Scientific Support Unit of West Yorkshire Police, which supports four police forces – West Yorkshire, South Yorkshire, North Yorkshire and Humberside.

COMPLETION 2012

The three storey building constructed on a highly visible and sensitive site incorporates forensics, fingerprints and imaging incorporated into a secure, state of the art laboratories complex.

BREEAM Excellent

The main energy sources were isolated from the main building in a separate energy centre so that future plant replacement with new and potentially more efficient sources could be easily accommodated with minimal disruption to the building. The building was also designed to cope with a high level of change, which is a familiar feature of police forces, as such the servicing strategy allowed for separate laboratory and general supplies and a building envelope that supported additional labs to be added at a later date. The building was full of energy efficient features such as daylight sensing lighting with proximity sensors and achieved a BREEAM excellent rating.

BLIZARD BUILDING QUEEN MARY, UNIVERSITY OF LONDON, UK PUBLIC BUILDINGS: SCIENCE + RESEARCH The Blizard Building, for Queen Mary College, University of London, creates a new environment for research staff and students that stimulates the exchange of information between departments, physically opening up the school and engendering new clarity in its workings. Traditional research laboratory design tends to isolate the scientific research functions. The unique interaction between research departments and public facilities within the new building has been achieved through the detailed consultation with representatives of the scientist user groups, who have actively engaged in the design process and project aspirations of cross-fertilisation and interaction. Individual departments are placed within the structure to be identifiable to each other and from the building’s exterior. The forms, suspended within the glass pavilion, house seminar and teaching spaces; the central tenet of transparency for the college and its operations, and the hope that the forms within the structure will be shared with a broader community of local schools and other users, prompts the use of amorphous forms and bright colours, eliciting interest and enthusiasm from outside the building as well as within.
