he May is Art Month festival is about more than just art this year. Capilano Mall decided to celebrate the event’s 11th year by giving even more back to the community. They’ve added a new art scholarship program and an art supply donation program to their lineup. The festival runs from May 1 to 31 and features a pop-up art gallery showcasing local artists, North Vancouver student art show, theatre production, performances by dancers and musicians – even workshops in skills like sustainable weaving. For Shera Allibhai, marketing director at Capilano Mall, the festival is very close to the heart.
“I grew up in the arts,” she says. “There is not one single component of this program that I could say I like more than another, that I love more than another, that I have more passion for than another.” Allibhai’s love of the arts is pivotal to her desire to keep the arts present within the North Vancouver community. The newly created donation program for new and used art supplies will provide needed materials to budding artists in North Vancouver public schools and other art programs. “Quality art supplies are expensive,” Allibhai says. “We want to provide some much needed supplies to those programs that provide arts

Like all of the festival’s events, it takes place at Capilano Mall, where an unoccupied unit – a raw retail space – is transformed into a theater in a matter of days. “This is an empty box and then two days later it’s a theatre,” says Allibhai. CATS is produced by URP Event Productions and the cast is primarily made up of musical theatre students from Capilano University. It has a four day run, from May 29 to June 1. Regular admission is $15 or $10 for students. “The ability to be a part of that is unforgettable,” Allibhai says.

Set Grill for direct cooking and heat to 400º F (200º C) with a pizza stone directly on grill.
PREPARATION
Sprinkle Semolina on large cutting board. Shape pizza dough to desired size. Brush top of dough with a bit of olive oil. Spread on your pizza sauce. Add chopped basil and oregano. Spread desired amount of mozzarella cheese and add your favourite toppings. Lastly, add finely grated parmesan.
