Holiday Shopping in the Heart of West Van Enjoy a relaxed holiday shopping experience this Christmas – right in the heart of West Vancouver. Conveniently located on Marine Drive, Ambleside Village has plenty to offer. The local shopping hub features a variety of independent businesses, with shops dedicated to home décor, specialty foods, boutique clothing, entertaining and, of course, gifts. Jen Engelhart, owner of At Home and vice president of the Ambleside Business Association, is proud to call Ambleside her business’ home. “We have five great walkable blocks on Marine Drive and Bellevue Avenue,” she says. “It’s a more interesting shopping experience.” Come Christmastime, shopping in Ambleside is a merry experience. The Ambleside Business Association organizes outdoor decorations each year. “We have lots of lights and banners going up for the holiday season,” says Engelhart. “[Our] efforts have been greatly supported by the City.” But that’s not all. “All the stores will be decorating their windows and putting up lights,” she says. Shopping in Ambleside is also a tad less hectic than the hustle

and bustle of many shopping centres during the holidays. “The experience is a bit more relaxed than trying to attempt to go to the mall,” says Engelhart. “You’re not trying to battle traffic to get downtown. We have fantastic little coffee shops through the neighbourhood. You can enjoy a walk on the seawall, grab a coffee with friends… walk Ambleside and look in each of the windows.” In addition, this year Ambleside businesses have teamed up to offer a fun holidaythemed scavenger hunt for kids. Twenty different local shops will each hide a snowflake somewhere in their window display. Pint-sized shoppers can pick up a ballot at West Van Florist, Optix Eyewear, At Home or Prelude Fashion starting Dec. 1. To be entered in the draw, enterprising kids need to hunt down 10 out of the 20 snowflakes. Each will be tied with a blue ribbon and have an Ambleside Business Association logo attached. Ballots with correct answers will be entered into a prize draw taking place on Dec. 24. Let the window shopping scavenger hunt begin! Is your Thyroid to blame? Have you ever wondered why some individuals are able to lose weight with diet and exercise, and other individuals cannot lose weight despite a disciplined program? Are you experiencing thinning hair, loss of lateral third of the eyebrows, mental fogginess and low sex drive? Have you had a good metabolism all of your life, and with menopause noticed weight gain around your midsection? Your thyroid may be to blame. But what if your thyroid tests appear normal? The standard blood test for thyroid function is called TSH, or thyroid stimulating hormone. This is a measure of how hard your thyroid gland is working to produce thyroid hormone. It is possible, however, for the TSH levels to be normal but other markers of thyroid function, such as T3 and T4, to be low. These levels are not commonly investigated unless the TSH level is out of normal range. If these levels are low, symptoms of hypothyroidism will be exacerbated. What causes low thyroid hormone production? Chronic stress, as well as unbalanced hormone levels, can decrease the production of T3, your active thyroid hormone. High cortisol levels

(stress hormones) can cause high levels of reverse T3, a hormone that binds to thyroid receptors and makes them less efficient. Low levels of the hormone progesterone can cause a decreased production of active thyroid hormone. This hormone typically will decrease with fluctuations in hormone levels leading up to menopause. Have you ever wondered why some individuals are able to lose weight with diet and exercise, and other individuals cannot lose weight despite a disciplined program? Are you experiencing thinning hair, loss of lateral third of the eyebrows, mental fogginess and low sex drive? Have you had a good metabolism all of your life, and with menopause noticed weight gain around your midsection? Your thyroid may be to blame. But what if your thyroid tests appear normal? The standard blood test for thyroid function is called TSH, or thyroid stimulating hormone. This is a measure of how hard your thyroid gland is working to produce thyroid hormone. It is possible, however, for the TSH levels to be normal but other markers of thyroid function, such as T3 and T4, to be low. These levels are not commonly investigated unless the TSH level is out of normal range. If these levels are low, symptoms of hypothyroidism will be exacerbated. What causes low thyroid hormone production? Chronic stress, as well as unbalanced hormone levels, can decrease the production of T3, your active thyroid hormone. High cortisol levels
