Sea to Sky Gondola lifts tourism to new heights

Scaling Habrich Ridge is no longer the only way to enjoy the view from its peak. The Sea to Sky Gondola makes this beautiful spot – long claimed by outdoor adventure enthusiasts as their own – accessible to everyone, according to general manager Trevor Dunn. “It’s always been a place where the extreme enthusiasts have been able to come,” Dunn says. “But for the group of people that was less inclined to do the extreme activities, it was hard to know how to take advantage of Squamish.” One of the biggest aims of building the gondola was to make Habrich Ridge’s incredible vantage points accessible to everyone, regardless of hiking prowess or climbing ability. The gondola will also provide an easy access point for outdoor adventurers to engage in activities ranging from hiking to rock climbing and trail running to snow shoeing. For those looking for a challenge, the 6 kilometre Sea to Sky Ascent Trail dares hikers to climb to the 885-metre summit. It takes three to four hours to reach the top; hikers can then take the gondola back down. Sea to Sky Gondola’s grand opening is May 16 – an event

celebrated with a ribbon cutting at the base and live performances by Juno-award winning musicians at the top. Dunn has been busy preparing the gondola for its public launch – including some special preview visits. The project’s impact was most apparent to Dunn when he brought Squamish Nation elders to the top at the end of April. It had been more than 60 years since many of the elders had been able to stand on the peak and immerse themselves in the view of their traditional lands. Dunn called their reaction, “inspiring.” At the top of the gondola, the Summit Lodge – complete with a self-serve restaurant and the Edge bar – greets visitors with its 5,000 square foot deck, featuring breathtaking views of ocean and mountains – with Howe Sound to the West, peaks like Diamond Head, Garibaldi, Mamquam and the Chief to the North and the Sky Pilot Massif to the East. “It’s really going to change people’s perspective of what Squamish is,” says Dunn. The Sky Pilot Suspension Bridge, attached directly to the deck, leads visitors to the first of the attraction’s many lookouts. From there, visitors can embark on the Spirit Trail – 400 metres of walkable, stroller-friendly trail that provides an interactive look at

local First Nations culture. Further on, Panorama Trail extends for a 1.6 kilometre journey through the woods. “We’re excited that this is going to… really put Squamish on the map,” says Dunn. Adult admission to the gondola is $34.95 and a summer season pass is $99. For more information, visit www.seatoskygondola.com.

INGREDIENTS ground fennel Italian seasoning sweet paprika ground coriander ground black pepper salt garlic powder salmon fillets extra virgin olive oil

Combine all ingredients except salmon and olive oil in a bowl. Brush each salmon fillet with about 1 tsp oil. Press spice mixture on skinless side of salmon. Let stand 15 minutes. Place salmon, skin side up on grill grate. Close lid. Cook over high heat about 3 minutes. Flip and cook, skin side down, 5 more minutes or until done, but still red in the center. (grilling time depends on the heat of your Grill and the thickness of the fillet.)

Is your child nearsighted? You can help. Myopia (or near-sightedness) is a common visual condition where things far away are out of focus and difficult to see. In the early 1970s, only 25% of the population was myopic, but now it is estimated to be over 40%. A lot of research is focused on risk factors for myopic progression and developing ways to slow it down.

Impacting Factors Myopia is related to age, genetics, ethnicity and environment. Recent studies have shown an increased prevalence of nearsightedness in children who live in urban areas, do a lot of near work (reading or computer), and spend less time outside. Why is myopic control important? A high myopic prescription creates a dependence on glasses or contact lenses, but more importantly, it carries a higher risk of eye diseases such as cataracts, glaucoma and retinal detachment.

Vision Shaping Treatment Vision Shaping Treatment (VST), or orthokeratology, is the most established myopia control strategy. It involves wearing a contact lens retainer during sleep to reshape the surface of the eye, much like orthodontic braces for tooth alignment. Rather than physical contact, however, the process uses gentle and painless forces in the tears between the lens and the eye.
