The standard blood test for thyroid function is called TSH, or thyroid stimulating hormone. This is a measure of how hard your thyroid gland is working to produce thyroid hormone. It is possible, however, for the TSH levels to be normal but other markers of thyroid function, such as T3 and T4, to be low. These levels are not commonly investigated unless the TSH level is out of normal range. If these levels are low, symptoms of hypothyroidism will be exacerbated. What causes low thyroid hormone production? Chronic stress, as well as unbalanced hormone levels, can decrease the production of T3, your active thyroid hormone. High cortisol levels

(stress hormones) can cause high levels of reverse T3, a hormone that binds to thyroid receptors and makes them less efficient. Low levels of the hormone progesterone can cause a decreased production of active thyroid hormone. This hormone typically will decrease with fluctuations in hormone levels leading up to menopause. TRAFFIC UPDATE Upcoming Weekend Full Road Closure – Low Level Road from Kennard Avenue to St. Andrews Avenue in North Vancouver

New Westbound Lane Opening on New Low Level Road

A planned weekend closure (weather dependent) will take place August 22 – 25 and will be in effect from Friday at 9 p.m. to Monday at 5 a.m. The closure will allow crews to relocate the temporary detour near St. Andrews Avenue and continue work on the retaining wall.

Beginning mid-to-late August (weather dependent), motorists travelling westbound will use the new Low Level Road. Eastbound traffic will continue to use the existing Low Level Road.

Detour routes will be clearly marked and motorists are advised to exercise caution in the area and to follow the directions of traffic personnel and road signs. Emergency and Port access will be maintained at all times.

A key goal of the Low Level Road Project is to maximize predictability during construction and minimize disruption for residents, goods movers and the travelling public.

Do cheap sunglasses protect my eyes? The answer is… maybe. So, sunglasses are a crucial part of UV protection, but how do you know if yours are doing the job?

First let’s look at why sunglasses are important. Everyone is at risk of damaging their eyes from UV radiation. This can result in a number of eye diseases such as cataracts, skin cancer on the eyelids, macular degeneration, corneal sunburn and excess tissue growth (pterygium). Research shows that by 20 years of age, the average eye has received 80% of their lifetime’s UV exposure for several reasons. Children have larger pupils, sensitive skin, and a more transparent lens that doesn’t block as many rays, so they are most at risk! The effects of UV overexposure are usually cumulative and don’t show up until later in life. Surfaces like water, snow, sand and the ground can all reflect UV rays from the sun, so a hat does not take the place of sun protection. Also, UV rays can easily pass through clouds. Sunglasses are sunscreen for the eyes!

Well, the truth is, you can’t tell how much UV protection a pair of sunglasses will provide by the price, colour, or darkness of the lenses! You need to read the label – as per Health Canada, manufacturers follow voluntary industry standards when labeling these products.

Inexpensive sunwear can provide excellent UV protection – the difference in cost often pertains to the quality of the lenses (ie. level of distortion, glare, clarity of vision and color). However, there is some added risk

So, always look for the 100% UV-A and UV-B blocking label (aka UV-400), but to be absolutely sure, it’s a good idea to bring your sunglasses in to your Optometrist and have them measured for UV protection.

The words “UV blocking” are not enough! Look for eyewear that filters 100% UV-A and UV-B rays, since both kinds can be harmful to your sight. Many people aren’t aware that sunglasses that don’t adequately block UV light can be worse for your eyes than not wearing sunglasses at all! This is because dark lenses shade your eyes, causing your pupils to dilate and let in even more UV rays.
