In West Van, helping kids manage stress improves learning outcomes The West Vancouver School District (WVSD) has started a very important conversation about the significance of self-regulation in early learning. It’s one they’re sharing not only with educators and parents, but with the community at large. Self-regulation is an integrated learning process that focuses on children developing constructive behaviours that positively affect their learning. This is not a new concept in educational, psychological or even social circles, according to Sandra-Lynn Shortall, WVSD district principal for early learning. “We’re really focusing on human development…understanding and honouring that people develop differently,” she says. There is a critical time in brain development from zero to five years of age during which self-regulation has the power to impact a child’s life-long trajectory, according to Shortall. “But that being said we also know based on both current research and intuitive knowledge that it is never too late to positively impact and enhance a human’s development. We have a big role to play,” she says. Examples of this role include changes in classroom design from bright colours to neutrals, more self-directed learning opportunities and the creation of microenvironments within classrooms for students to self-select their personal

The concept is now becoming embedded in classroom instruction in all curriculum areas and has expanded to seven districts. The district focuses on five different aspects of self-regulation: matching energy levels to the demands of a situation; monitoring emotions; focusing

Through the lens of self-regulation’s five domains — biological, emotional, cognitive, social and pro-social complemented by emerging neurological, developmental research — we can connect these critical links for children and enhance their opportunities to thrive in the 21st century.

“Parents and teachers model behaviours,” says Shortall, adding that teaching selfregulation can be as simple as thinking before reacting to a situation and then verbalizing the thought process with your child. Talking about emotions and labelling them for children is a critical part of developing regulated and resilient behaviours in the early years. “Our children are learning directly from us… what we, as adults in our community, say and do matters. Selfregulation is a life-long process and a wonderful opportunity for community enhancement.” The school district has worked with a group of other community agencies to create spaces and opportunities for families that feature programs with a focus on self-regulation, heart-mind wellness, early learning, family engagement and community enhancement. A variety of programs can be found at the West Vancouver Child and Family Hub. A brand new centre, the Properties Family Hub, opens at the end of September. Kindergarten registration begins throughout the district at 8 am on October 15. These levels are not commonly investigated unless the TSH level is out of normal range. If these levels are low, symptoms of hypothyroidism will be exacerbated. What causes low thyroid hormone production? Chronic stress, as well as unbalanced hormone levels, can decrease the production of T3, your active thyroid hormone. High cortisol levels

(stress hormones) can cause high levels of reverse T3, a hormone that binds to thyroid receptors and makes them less efficient. Low levels of the hormone progesterone can cause a decreased production of active thyroid hormone. This hormone typically will decrease with fluctuations in hormone levels leading up to menopause. In the early 1970s, only 25% of the population was myopic, but now it is estimated to be over 40%. A lot of research is focused on risk factors for myopic progression and developing ways to slow it down.
