Have you ever set foot inside a candy shop that doubled as a time machine? You’re about to. Sticky’s Candy in Lynn Valley has the unusual ability to transport its patrons back in time. The moment you step through the door, the sugary sweet scent of your childhood pulls you into an instant flashback, as you spot your favourite treats lining the shelves as far as the eye can see. ”What sets Sticky’s Candy apart from other stores that sell candy, is that candy is our specialty. We carry a huge variety of sweet treats that are sure to bring our customers back to that happy moment of being a kid in a candy store. We carry candy from the 1950’s all the way up to today’s new treats.” Says Sticky’s Candy Regional Manager, Leah Lovell. “Grandparents and parents are like, ‘Oh my gosh, I remember this. I haven’t seen this in years!’” Sticky’s sells Pez dispensers, gold mine gum and wax lips among other treats, including a huge bulk section, over 100 different sodas and 16 flavours of Island Farms ice cream. It’s nostalgia, wrapped up in store form. There’s something for the kid in everyone at Sticky’s, with flashback-inducing

nostalgic treats for the big kids and new treats of every kind for the kid-kids. Among their new confections is a challenge for the sweet tooth that demands to be satisfied: the world’s largest gummy bear, weighing in at five pounds. “It’s the size of a teddy bear!” says Lovell. The store also has a slightly less monumental gummy, weighing one pound, in addition to an enormous candy selection – which includes much more manageable regular-sized gummy bears. On top of sweet treats like gummies, Sticky’s also carries an extensive line of chocolate bars, imported from the U.S. and

the U.K., where the paraffin wax content in chocolate is much lower than that of Canadian bars. Canadian chocolate is made of 12 per cent paraffin wax – also found in candles – while bars produced in the U.S. have only 4 per cent and those from the U.K. contain none. Sticky’s first opened its doors to customers in March, but that isn’t holding the shop back from going all out for its grand opening on October 4. There’ll be balloon animals, face painting, a bubble gum chewing contest, the store’s loveable giant hedgehog mascot and, of course, soda and candy samples galore.

The festivities run from 12 to 4 p.m. The bubble gum competition kicks off at 3 p.m. Contestants are encouraged to stuff their mouths full of gum and aim to blow the biggest bubble possible. It’s a throwback to the best kind of goofy childhood fun – open to “kids” of all ages. It all takes place Saturday October 4th from 12:00-4:00 at 1248A Lynn Valley Road.

Is your Thyroid to blame? Have you ever wondered why some individuals are able to lose weight with diet and exercise, and other individuals cannot lose weight despite a disciplined program? Are you experiencing thinning hair, loss of lateral third of the eyebrows, mental fogginess and low sex drive? Have you had a good metabolism all of your life, and with menopause noticed weight gain around your midsection? Your thyroid may be to blame. But what if your thyroid tests appear normal? The standard blood test for thyroid function is called TSH, or thyroid stimulating hormone. This is a measure of how hard your thyroid gland is working to produce thyroid hormone. It is possible, however, for the TSH levels to be normal but other markers of thyroid function, such as T3 and T4, to be low. These levels are not commonly investigated unless the TSH level is out of normal range. If these levels are low, symptoms of hypothyroidism will be exacerbated. What causes low thyroid hormone production? Chronic stress, as well as unbalanced hormone levels, can decrease the production of T3, your active thyroid hormone. High cortisol levels

(stress hormones) can cause high levels of reverse T3, a hormone that binds to thyroid receptors and makes them less efficient. Low levels of the hormone progesterone can cause a decreased production of active thyroid hormone. This hormone typically will decrease with fluctuations in hormone levels leading up to menopause.
