The holiday season is here again and we’re looking towards the New Year. Let’s reflect on a great 2015 and enjoy some special time with our families. Happy Holidays to our NCRS members and their families.

Most notable of our events, member achievements, and milestones this past year include:  In February, we went to Randy’s Competition Engine Shop to watch an engine dyno. The motor was a 327 owned by Paul Burski. We had a great turnout of over 30 members.  With a heavy heart, we had to say goodbye to one of our club members – Ron Hendrickson. Ron was so excited to earn his 300 point judging level at the 2014 national convention in Kansas City.  We added a spring judging event where we judged six nice cars. It was held at Kiss’s Classic Cars in South St. Paul.  We had to say goodbye and thanks to Val Crosby, our long-term tabulator. For the last time, Val worked at our spring judging meet and helped train in her replacements.

We all truly miss Val.  Our chapter had several members who attended the NCRS Nationals in Denver and four cars received awards. Merlin Benson took Top Flight for his 1962 Corvette, Paul Klemetson took Top Flight for his 1969 Corvette, Will Zierhut got his Five Star Bowtie award for his 1969 Corvette, and Doug Jolstad received Second Flight for his 1969 Corvette. We received the Top Flight chapter award again this year.  The Land of Lakes GTO Club Muscle Car Classic was held Aug. 9. The Corvette class first place winner was Linda Krickle with her 1967 Corvette.

Wisconsin Regional Meet – Our chapter had five chapter members attend the regional meet in Oconomowoc, Wisc. in early September. David Cloutier received Top Flight for his 1957 Corvette, Jerome Lardy took home a Top Flight award for his 1995 Corvette.

Chris Enstrom, Bob Lund, and Rick Zierhut were all able to earn judging points at the Wisconsin Regional. Everyone had a good time renewing friendships with the Wisconsin and Illinois chapter members.

As we look back at 2015, we can see that our club is very busy with chapter events and activities, participation is always strong, and the camaraderie is wonderful. Can’t wait to see what 2016 brings!

One new member joined our chapter in the fourth quarter.

Jim Watters resides in Lake Elmo, MN and found us through the NCRS National website. Welcome to our chapter Jim. We look forward to meeting you at an upcoming event. ****************************************************************** Looking back over this past year, I am thinking of two long time members of our chapter that are no longer with us. Ron Hendrickson and Barry Larson passed away this year and they will be greatly missed. Ron joined our chapter back in 1994 and with his wife Jude, participated in many activities and judging meets. The same can be said for Barry and his wife Bev. Barry joined the chapter in 2008 and though he lived quite a distance away, he always seemed to be there for the judging schools and meets.

They were both fantastic gentlemen and were always there for you if you needed any help. Our thoughts and prayers continue to go out to their families during this holiday season.

The year is coming to a close and it is time to renew your membership dues for 2016. The North Central Chapter board is keeping the dues at the same low price as last year.

Dues are $25.00 if you choose to receive the Crossed Flags newsletter via the internet or $35.00 if you prefer a hard copy mailed to you. The hard copy price reflects the actual cost to print and mail the newsletter.

North Central Chapter Members, It is time to renew your membership for the upcoming 2016 season.

If you would like to receive a hard copy of the newsletter, the dues are $35.00. You will need to renew using the attached renewal form.

If you choose to receive the newsletter via email, the dues are $25.00 and you have two payment options. You can either use the form attached or you can renew online using the NCRS website at www.ncrs.org . Sign in using your name and membership number such as John Doe (64312) and your password.

Hold the cursor over the Join tab and click on Local Chapters from the drop down link.

You have the option to pay for more than one year if you so choose.

2016 Regional Judging Event – Rochester, MN - May 19, 20 and 21st For those of you that haven’t heard by now, the North Central Chapter is hosting one of the six Regional Judging Events in Rochester, MN next year. If you are interested in seeing some great cars, learning more about the NCRS Flight Judging system, and meeting people from around the country, we would love to have to come to Rochester! The event starts on Thursday with the event check in and Operations Judging. The cars then proceed inside the Graham Center Arena. The evening wraps up with a 1 point Judging School put on by the National Judging Chairman, David Brigham and a Welcome Reception. Friday will see a full day of Flight Judging and a 3 point Advanced Judging School. Saturday will see the remainder of Flight Judging and a second 3 point Advanced Judging School. Saturday evening is the awards banquet and we’re done!

You can register for the event online either by going to www.ncrs.org or to our Chapter’s website at www.northcentralncrs.com. An email announcement will go out once the registration form is live.

Here are the different ways you can participate at the Regional.

Thank you to everyone who attended the November tech session, and a special thank you to Bob and those of you who were “hands-on” as we lifted the body off my 1963 Corvette.

As some of you may now, I purchased the car with my Dad back in 1973 and while it was brought back to its original Daytona Blue color in 1975, I’ve been thinking about restoring it for several years. I have to admit that lifting the body made me more than a bit nervous, especially when we were rocking it to lower it onto the body cart. In fact, my kids still can’t believe I’d let anyone touch the car, let alone do what we were doing. It’s been stored behind sheets of plywood with directions to stay away for as long as they can remember and only uncovered once a year to start it, change the oil, and maybe drive around the neighborhood.

It was exciting to find the masking tape on the body shims, confirm that “we have numbers” on the original transmission, and figure out a way to get the body onto the lift. Once it was on the lift it was fun to see the club members check the body to what else they could find.

Having the expertise and support of the Club Members helped me get through the morning. So far it’s been a lot of fun! I’m certainly learning a lot about the car and look forward to what comes next.

The North Central Chapter conducted a Make-Up Chapter Meet after our regular August Chapter Meet for a member that was registered but had to back out at the last minute. Dave and Arlene Martin's 1966 Coupe did very well for its first time out and was awarded a Second Flight ribbon. Their plan is to continue to campaign the car next year toward Top Flight.

Best Penetrating Oil Kind of surprising, but that mix (50-50) is what I use.

Word of caution - don't use a foam cup to mix it in. (Yeah, don't ask me how I know this) I mix mine in a glass jar with a good sealed lid - it does loose its effectiveness after time - it's best to mix up a small "fresh" batch for best results. I then pour it into an ALL metal squirt can to apply/use.

April 2007 "Machinist's Workshop" magazine comparison test wrote: They arranged a subjective test of all the popular penetrates with the control being the torque required to remove the nut from a "scientifically rusted" environment.

The ATF-Acetone mix was a "home brew" mix of 50 - 50 automatic transmission fluid and acetone.

Note the "home brew" was better than any commercial product in this one particular test.

Note also that "Liquid Wrench" is about as good as "Kroil" for about 20% of the price.

• Judging Report -- Chris Enstrom / Will Zierhut – Chris reported that there are no judging schools planned for the balance of the year.

The official “Kickoff” meeting for the upcoming Chapter Regional was well attended with the majority of plans in place. Chris has created an ad to be placed in the upcoming issue of the NCRS Driveline with schedule and details of the event. Chris will send out an official memo to all members to register fo judging participation at the event.

Chris further reported that sign up for the upcoming National Judging School that will be held March 17 – 19 in Dallas, Texas is up and live. Currently we have seven members who have registered with three others who have expresse interest in participating.

Jeff has a '63 coupe that he is in the process of dismantling. Dave has two '63 coupes that he would like to have judged next year.

Welcome to our newest members. The chapter membership now stands at 131.

• Tech Report -- Bob Lund – Bob stated that a few members will be judging a car on October 17th. There will not be a Tech Session for October.

• Activities Report -- Don O'Grady – Don updated that the “Fall Color Run” is set for October 18th. The run will be to New Ulm for good food and drink. Don will send out an announcement to all members with details of the event.

Don reported that the “Holiday Dinner” has been set up for February 27th, 2016 at Mancini’s in downtown Saint Paul. Don will send out an announcement to all members with details and sign up.

• Member at Large – Roger Carlson – Roger reported that the October Member of the Month which features Toby Engen has been posted by Nick to the Chapter web site. Roger has set in place MOM’s for November and December.

• Old Business - Jerome reported that our chapter raised $196 for the Courage Kenny Foundation. Jerome will send in the quarterly report to Bill Braun for the Chapter Top Flight Award program.

• New Business – Dave Cloutier has graciously donated his body lift to the chapter. Jerome Lardy is the caretaker if anybody wants to use it. A gigantic “THANK YOU” goes to Dave from the board.

Alden Miles requested that we include a list of “Master Judges” for each “C” class corvette to the web site so members can call and ask questions or gain information needed. Chris Enstrom will compile the list and provide information to Nick Kornder for the chapter web site. Great idea Alden!

Mike Kittle reported that six members had filled out and sent in completed Election Ballots. Motion was made and passed that the ballots be accepted as provided.

Motion was made and passed that Roger Carlson be moved to Treasurer to replace Steve Johnston who is retiring from the board. We will need a current member to step forward to replace Roger as “Member at Large”.

Board Meeting Minutes November 5, 2015

Rick called the meeting to order.

• Meeting Minutes fr om the October 1, 2015 meeting wer e approved. -- Mike Kittle • Treasurer's Report – Roger Carlson – Roger Carlson met with Steve Johnston, and subsequently he and Rick Zierhut met with US Bank officials to move all chapter financial records over to Roger's and Rick's control.

Roger provided a year to date review of chapter revenues and expenses.

At the recommendation of Jeff Cook, NCRS Financial Director, a motion was made and passed that the chapter will retain chapter financial records for five years plus the current year.

Roger has renewed the chapter's Minnesota non-profit business registration for 2015.

A motion was made and passed to renew a CD for a 19 month term.

• Judging Report -- Chris Enstrom / Will Zierhut – Rick provided an update for Chris that we currently have three cars registered for flight judging and seven people registered for the upcoming regional in May. • Website Report -- Nick Kornder –Nick reported that the November Member of the Month which features Dave Edmeyer has been posted to both the Chapter Facebook and Web sites.

Nick updated the group that we are now up to 60 “Likes” in total for our chapter Facebook page. Nick further reported that NCRS National has sent out several copies of our M.O.M.’s to other regions along with the following note: "This is a great idea that the NCRS North Central Chapter hadfeaturing a member every month. Hey all you other NCRS Chapters out there- I'll watch for your features and post them here, too! There are all sorts of amazing stories out there about how members located their Corvettes and we'd love to hear them."

Nick updated all that he is working with Dave Murphy collecting Newsletters from years past. Copies obtained to date have been scanned, converted and posted to our website. Members can view them at: http://northcentralncrs.com/newsletter/ Nick reported that we are just missing some from 2010 and 2011, but once he gets them, we should have all newsletters available back to 1986.

• Newsletter Report -- Dave Murphy – Dave reported that the third quarter newsletter has been sent to all members. Dave is currently working on material for the fourth quarter newsletter which is scheduled to be sent in January. Dave is polling members for input on fresh ideas to enhance the newsletter.

• Membership Report -- Jerome Lardy – Jerome announced that we have a new member, Jim Watters of Lake Elmo. Welcome Jim, we look forward to meeting you at upcoming chapter events.

The chapter membership now stands at 132.

Jerome reported that the chapter will keep the membership dues at $25 for members receiving the newsletter via email and $35 for those who would like to receive a hard copy by mail.

• Tech Report -- Bob Lund – Bob is currently working on a location for the November tech session. Bob will update all members with details in a separate email.

• Activities Report -- Don O'Grady – Don reported that the Fall Color Cruise to Schell Brewery was outstanding. Members attending enjoyed a tour of the brewery and several ice cold beverages in the Schell tap room.

Don updated all that the next chapter social event will be the “Winter Social Dinner” that will be held at Mancini’s on February 27th.

• Member at Large – OPEN - Motion was made and passed to elect Paul Burski to this board position. Paul will take over the responsibilities from Roger Carlson as Roger moves to chapter treasurer. Congratulations Paul, we look forward to working with you!

• Old Business - NONE • New Business – Jerome updated all that we have completed all but one of the requirements needed to obtain Chapter Top Flight status from National. Motion was made and passed to make a $200 contribution to the Courage Kenny Foundation. Jerome will send copies of the donation paperwork to National to complete this requirement.

DID YOU KNOW? A big deal at the time but now almost an outdated feature, the first CD player in a Corvette became optional for the 1990 model year. The option was very popular; finding its way into over 65% of cars sold that year.

Nonetheless, a CD stereo was not standard until the 2001 model year, and by the 2010 model year, it was obvious that CDs were in decline as the 6 disc in-dash CD changer that was previously standard on 3LT models was made into a standalone option, of which just 15% of buyers ordered.
