RETURN ADDRESS
NCRS NORTH CENTRAL CHAPTER Dave Murphy Editor 279 Lily Pond Lane Vadnais Heights, MN 55127
MAIL TO:
April to June 2016 EDITION
Summer is here and our cars should now be ready for the road. The highlight for our chapter over the past quarter was that we hosted a regional judging meet in Rochester, Minn. May 19 – 21. It was the year of the ’66. We had a caravan from our chapter meet and head down to Rochester together from the Cities – Will Zierhut, Mark Ogren, Dave Murphy, Paul Klemetson in their '66s plus Bob Lund in his ’63 Grand Sport. The event was chaired by Chris Enstrom who kept the myriad of details organized along with his crack team of chapter volunteers. Thanks to Chris and everyone who helped make the meet a success. New for this meet was that we had 13 of our chapter members chosen to judge; basically anyone who wanted to judge and rack up some points could do so. That’s a major change in philosophy for the national judging teams. Four members from our chapter received their Master Judge caps, meaning they have accumulated 100 judging points or more. Congratulations to Bob Lund, Jerome Lardy, Mike Schmoll, and Rick Zierhut. Several of our chapter members earned Flight awards for their cars. Congratulations to everyone! Dave Cloutier - PV passed - 1957 Chuck Mosher - Second Flight - 1962 Bob Lund - Special Interest Display - 1963 Mike McDonald - Top Flight - 1965 Roger Carlson - Top Flight - 1965 Will Zierhut - Special Interest Display - 1966 Dave & Arlene Martin - Second Flight - 1966 Dave Murphy - Top Flight - 1966 Paul Klemetson - Special Interest Display - 1966 Doug Jolstad - Top Flight - 1969 Bill Neumiller - Top Flight - 1969 Jim Anderson - Top Flight - 1969 Bob Schroeder - Top Flight - 1971 Jeff Wilhelmi - Third Flight - 1971 Jim Anderson - Top Flight - 1972 Mike Meirovitz - Founders Operations Pass - 1980 Len Kaufer - Top Flight - 1987 Jerome Lardy - PV passed - 1995 Ken Traverse - Sportsman - 2008 Steve Hudak - Sportsman – 2015 Mark Ogren - Special Interest Display - 1966 We received rave reviews from the National attendees for everything from the opening night festivities, catering, awards dinner, trolley ride, etc. The bar is now set for other chapters!

Board Meeting
We have added five new members since the last quarter and our membership now stands at 130. Jim Anderson resides in East Dundee, IL and joined our chapter at the regional we hosted in Rochester, MN. Jim brought along two C3s for judging, a ’69 and ’72. Jim also attended our previous regional in 2014. Eric Eade lives in Holmen, WI and helped judge at the regional meet. Eric was a previous member back in the late 90’s to early 00’s. Life took over back then, but now Eric has a little extra free time to come back to his Corvette hobby. Eric has a ’62 that he is restoring. It is Honduras Maroon with the 300HP motor. Alan Kruse calls Prior Lake, MN home and he has a ’63 roadster with the 340HP engine. Jeff Wilhelmi lives in Austin, MN and is a friend of Ty Truax. Jeff is new to the NCRS and brought his ’71 out for flight judging at our regional meet. It was an eye opening experience for Jeff and he did pretty well for the first time out. Pliny Smith resides in Shakopee, MN and is restoring a ’64 roadster with the help of Van Mattson. We just had our June tech session at Van’s shop and went over the rebuild of the 300HP motor. Pliny has owned his Corvette since 1968. Welcome to all of our new members. We hope to see you at an upcoming chapter event in the near future. On a side note, Dale Anderson recently had a quadruple heart bypass operation. We saw Dale last weekend at the tech session and he looked great. His surgeon had just cleared him for driving, so what better way to do it than with his recently purchased ’08. Dale, the chapter wishes you a speedy recovery and we look forward to seeing you again real soon. Jerome Lardy Membership Chairman
2016 North Central Regional Recap Back in May, our Chapter hosted another Regional Judging Meet. I am pleased to report that everything went off very well and I received many positive compliments about the event. So my deep thanks to everyone who helped make this Regional so successful. As you saw from The President's Corner earlier in the newsletter, Rick reported that 20 of our members received awards at the Regional. That was almost half of the number of cars that attended. So my thanks also to our Chapter Members who participated and had fun with their cars. Because of how successful our event was, the National organization is already asking our Chapter to consider hosting another event. The Board will consider that for future opportunities. Shown below are the cars from our Chapter that attended. Dave C. - 1957

Since I’ve owned my 78, I have always had a few problems with the column. Excessive up and down play, the turn signal/cruise control lever not secure in the column and difficulty moving the lever into the left turn signal. I would literally have to slam it into the left turn mode. Over the years I’ve been making many repairs, preventive maintenance and now felt it was time to address the column. The removal was actually quite straight forward and not difficult at all. I believe it took about 45 minutes from start to finish. As you can see in the picture, I left the steering wheel attached; this will also be replaced. The column is being repaired by “Vanz Auto” in Blaine MN. Van is a member of our chapter and will be hosting a tech session on rebuilding/repair of the column. Since the column is out and will be apart, I’ll also have it painted, this is the perfect time to do this. We also adjusted the hood as it was rubbing. I really never wanted to tackle this by myself, truth is I found the idea of adjust the hood a bit intimidating. With the help of chapter members we were able to achieve a gap around the entire hood. And of course this meant I now had to adjust the latches. Best regards Bill Kohl
On April 30th, we had part 2 of the column removal/rebuild of my column from my 78. There is no doubt in my mind I made the right decision in having it professionally rebuilt. As you can see in the pictures there are a lot of little parts. There are just too many for me to have determined what was bad and what wasn’t. Once the column was taken apart Van found more items which needed replacing. For example, the lower bear assembly, initially we were going to just replace the bearing, but upon inspection the plastic holder was crack. This added to play in the steering system. The turn signal lever assembly is also being replaced. We also had an impromptu lock smith lesson. Bob Lund have the trunk lock cylinder from him Monti Carlo. Van disassembled it and made the repairs. Amazing what goes into that tiny cylinder. Bill Kohl

I believe I am the third owner and have owned the car since 1968 and purchased it from a private party in Red Wing, MN. It was my primary transportation through college and my early married life, therefore I drove it year round. I must say it was a great winter car. Just yesterday I sent in the money to the NCRS national to obtain information as to which dealer the car was sold from and depending on if the dealer is still in business or not will take it from there. Since the car was a year round driver and in storage for a number of years in less than desirable locations the original frame was very badly rusted. Last fall the car was trailered up to Van’s Automotive where a replacement 1964 frame will be installed and the entire drivetrain rebuilt, which includes the engine. The VIN numbers on the block are currently in question so I cannot say if this is the original motor, although the VIN numbers do match. When completed, the car will have a totally rebuilt chassis and drivetrain and a new interior. I plan to leave the body untouched as it still has the original paint. My goal is to have it back on the road as a recreational driver and be able to enjoy the car again. The purpose of the Tech Session was for the local NCRS Chapter to go over the block and talk about the rebuild and general Corvette block markings and features. Regards, Pliny Smith
Paragon Corvette Club Rewards Program – Help your club when buying parts The North Central Chapter NCRS is participating in the Paragon Club Rewards Program. Here’s how the program works. Each calendar year Paragon adds up the total value of all parts purchased by participating North Central Chapter members (excludes labor, restorations & used parts) during that year. At the end of each calendar year the North Central Chapter receives 3% of that value in the form of either gift certificates or stocked Paragon items. The club will use these gift certificates or stocked Paragon items as giveaways at club functions such as Tech and Judging sessions.
This program does not affect any discounts you currently enjoy with Paragon. How you can participate Paragon needs to identify customers as being a member of the North Central Chapter in order to include their purchases in the annual calculation. The club needs to provide Paragon a list of participating club members. Participating members can either be existing Paragon customers or new Paragon customers. The North Central Chapter currently has 21 club members participating. If you would like to participate, and have not already signed up, please email Roger Carlson at Rogerpcarlson@gmail.com ASAP to get your Paragon purchases included.

Since the meet Chris has received complimentary emails from event attendees from all over the country as well as from NCRS HQ attendees. Our members took home 7 Top Flight Awards, 2 Second Flight Awards, and 1 Third Flight Award. Additionally, two members passed their PV test, and one member completed the Regional requirement for Founders Operations. Two members brought cars for Sportsman, and four members brought cars for Special Interest Display. The individual results will be published in an upcoming issue of the NCRS Corvette Restorer Magazine. Congrats to all of the owners! Chris did update all that NCRS HQ attendees as well as event participating NCRS members are begging North Central Chapter to hold a Regional event in 2017. It is very obvious that when North Central puts on an event, IT IS THE GOLD STANDARD for Regionals. Chris was pleased to report that with the help from his dad, Ken, that all judging points for judges, judging paperwork for car owners, certificate and award information has been submitted to NCRS HQ and assigned. Bob reported that there will not be a Tech Session in June due to our recent Regional and the Back to the Fifties car show. Bob is working on a combined Tech Session and Judging School for July. Bob suggested to all that the board map out the already committed dates for 2017 and 2018 for Regional events (Iowa Regional, Illinois Regional, Wisconsin Regional, etc.) before making a decision on doing a future North Central Regional. This exercise would help us better plan for a future event to maximize participation from NCRS members outside the North Central Chapter. All agreed.
