Moonlight Amphitheatre – Award Winning Musicals Under The Stars! Win Free Tickets! My Fair Lady Aug 13–30 Henry Higgins and Eliza Doolittle have been vying for our hearts–and each other’s– since 1956 when this musical debuted on Broadway. My Fair Lady is the triumphant standard by which all other musicals are measured. Based on Shaw’s play and Pascal’s movie Pygmalion, with book, music and lyrics by Lerner and Loewe, My Fair Lady is the winner of multiple Tony Awards. The show blooms with witty comedy and characters in this tale of Eliza Doolittle’s transformation from street vendor to high society lady. With some of the best musical theatre songs ever, it’s no wonder everyone falls in love with Eliza. Rated PG. Catch Me If You Can Sept 10–27 Based on the hit DreamWorks film and the incredible true story that inspired it, Catch Me If You Can is the
high-flying, splashy new Broadway musical that tells the story of Frank W. Abagnale, Jr., a teenager who runs away from home in search of the glamorous life. With nothing more than his boyish charm, a big imagination and millions of dollars in forged checks, Frank successfully poses as a pilot, a doctor and a lawyer–living the high life and winning the girl of his dreams. But when Frank’s lies catch the attention of FBI agent Carl Hanratty, Carl chases Frank to the end...and finds something he never expected. This delightfully entertaining musical has been created by a Tony Awardwinning “dream team,” with a book by Terrence McNally (The Full Monty, Ragtime) and a swinging score by Marc Shaiman & Scott Wittman (Hairspray). Rated PG. The Moonlight Amphitheatre is located just minutes away in nearby Brengle Terrace Park in Vista. For ticket information, call (760) 724-2110, or visit www. moonlightstage.com.

North Coast Repertory Theatre Win Free Tickets! Words by Ira Gershwin August 14-24 One of The North Coast Repertory Theatre’s most popular musical plays is back again for a very limited engagement. Revel in some of America’s most beloved songs crafted by the incomparable Ira Gershwin. The gentle, wry and witty lyricist Ira Gershwin guides us through this magical journey as we learn more about the life of his colorful brother George and catch a glimpse into his own less publicized life. Along the way, the audience is treated to some of the songs Ira created with other well-known composers of the era. This is an evening of glorious music that will have the audience singing and
smiling long after the lights go down. Noël Coward’s Fallen Angels September 6-28 This is Noël Coward at his inimitable best. Fallen Angels provides a continuously entertaining two hours of sheer delight, when you combine two slightly bored British women, an amorous Frenchman, clueless husbands and one very cheeky maid. The audience has the ingredients for an enjoyable evening of merriment that only Noël Coward can provide. When it premiered in 1925, audiences were shocked by its theme of female sexuality and longing. Veering from witty asides to uproarious slapstick, this
fast-paced farce leaves everyone in stitches. The North Coast Repertory Theatre is located at 987 Lomas Santa Fe Dr., Solana Beach, 92075. Annual Cardiff Greek Festival – Chance to Win 2014 Mercedes-Benz CLA September 6-7, Sat 10am-10pm, Sun 11am-9pm The Cardiff Greek Festival is a 36-year tradition in North County, bringing together the San Diego community throughout the two-day span. Under its iconic gold dome, the grounds of Saints Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Church is once again transformed with the sights, sounds, aromas and hospitality of the Mediterranean. “We look forward to sharing Greece’s rich history and tradition with the community every year through the festival’s food, music, and dance,” said Rev. Father Michael Sitaras, Pastor of Saints Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Church. “The spirit of Greece is alive in us. Let us share it with you!” For a $3 dollar admission (children under 12 are free), attendees are transported into a quaint Greek village, serenaded by renowned Southern California Greek band The Olympians and other live entertainers throughout the weekend. They can feast on traditional Greek cuisine including souvlaki (shish-kabobs), loukaniko (sausage), dolmathes (stuffed grape leaves with egg-lemon sauce), and gyros. Scrumptious vegetarian fare includes tiropitas (cheese triangles in filo) and spanakopita (spinach pie). Of course, don’t forget to save room
for homemade pastries! ***Clip their FREE entrance coupon on their ad or on our coupon page*** As you enjoy the sweet and the savory, let the parish’s youngest members—ages five through high school — entertain you as the award-winning dance groups perform folk dances in traditional Greek costumes. Send a shout of “Opa!” their way to show your appreciation for their hard work and dedication to their heritage. You even have the opportunity to put your best fancy footwork forward through guided dance instruction. A highlight of the experience are church tours guided by Fr. Michael. “What many visitors don’t realize is that our gold dome is just as magnificent on the inside as it is on the outside. I love that moment of stunned wonderment when guests first see the intricacy of the Byzantine artwork in our church.” Before you leave your journey to Greece, visit the open marketplace, which typifies a traditional bazaar with Greek imports, pottery, fine jewelry, artwork, a Greek deli, and an array of other treasures. A Fun Zone with games, crafts, and miniature golf will ensure children enjoy their time as much as the adults. Live auctions and a chance to drive away in a 2014 Mercedes-Benz CLA keep the festival’s excitement going until the very end. The Cardiff Greek Festival is being celebrated Saturday, September 6 from 10am to 10pm, and Sunday, September 7 from 11am to 9pm on the grounds of Saints Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Church (3459 Manchester
Avenue). It is located a half mile east of I-5 at the Manchester exit in Cardiff-by-the-Sea. Free parking is available at the adjacent Mira Costa College. Visit www.cardiffgreekfest. com for more information.

Chevrolet U.S. Sand Sculpting Challenge and 3D Art Exposition Win Free Tickets! August 29–September 1 This year marks the third year that one of the world’s most important sand sculpting competitions is being held on a temporary beach on a pier on downtown’s Big Bay. Sculptors have called it one of the most creative atmospheres in the world and USA Today named it “One of The Ten Best Sand Sculpting Events in The U.S.” The event takes place on “B” Street Pier and there will be a beautiful wide esplanade at the base of the pier open to the public. While sandcastles stretch west on the pier nearly 1,000 feet into the bay, some of downtown’s grandest castles in the sky will lie just to the East across Harbor Drive. New for this year is a beer garden, right at the edge of the pier. The Challenge is open late on Saturday night, and it’s quite the sight to see magnificent sand sculptures profiled against the setting sun. Sculptors come from all around the world to participate in this event! Joo-heng Tan from Singapore and Chris Guinto of Key West are joining sculptors from Italy, Ireland, the Netherlands, Latvia and Quebec to challenge the best from across the U.S. At stake is more than $60,000 in appearance, prize money and expenses. Sandis Kondrats, the Latvian, took the Grand Prize in 2013, while Rusty Croft from Carmel, CA won it in 2012. So this is the rubber
match in the Challenge: Will this year’s Grand Prize winner be from the U.S., or from Canada, Europe or Asia? Bruce Phillips of Carlsbad won the People’s Choice Award in the World Masters Class at last summer’s event, but this year his fellow sculptors don’t have to compete with him. They do need to abide by his rules, however, as Bruce is one of the event’s managers. Rusty Croft from Carmel has also left the ranks of competitors to join the show producers. Both Phillips and Croft are both previous winners at the US Sand Sculpting Challenge. No matter how much you love the sand sculptures, however, you can’t buy them. But at the 3D Art Exposition, you can buy more than 1,000 works of art in other media, like metal, wood, glass, acrylic, fabric, gemstones and more. Many of the finest artists in the Southwest are on the pier, exhibiting and selling their wares. The 4-day event offers fun for the whole family. There are kids’ rides, big bands on the big stage and trucks offering great food from different parts of the country and different parts of the world. How’d you like to have your kids taught how to
build sandcastles by sculptors who’ve created award winners in Amsterdam and Paris and Tokyo? The Chevrolet U.S. Sand Sculpting Challenge is located at ‘B’ Street Pier, downtown San Diego. Find more information at www.ussandsculpting.com. Sponsored by inSlider food trucks, active duty military and their families are admitted to the event free on its first day open to the public, Friday, August 29. Admission for others is $4-$5 on Friday, and $7-$10 on Saturday through Monday. Win Free Tickets! Enter to win tickets to the U.S. Sand Sculpting Challenge and 3D Art Exposition by visiting www. NorthCountySun.com and filling out the simple entry form. You may only enter one time. Winners will be randomly selected and contacted by phone and email.

Café Panini
TWENTY/20 Restaurant and Bar– Sheraton Carlsbad Resort and Spa
This is one of those places that you just need to know about. Café Panini is one of the coolest hangouts in Carlsbad Village. None of their eclectic décor matches but seems to make sense. It has the look and feel of Hussong’s Cantina in Ensenada, Mexico, but with much more comfortable seating, sofas, a beautiful water fountain, outdoor fire pits, umbrellas, wifi, and beautiful ornate black iron fencing. Their outdoor patio is kid and dog friendly. Their menu offers organic and local ingredients whenever possible and they serve breakfast, lunch and dinner. Locals flock to Café Panini for their espresso bar and signature Panini sandwiches such as their delicious Caprese with tomato, mozzarella, pesto and balsamic vinegar, or their Mushroom with spinach, mozzarella, pesto and sundried
tomatoes. They offer espresso coffee, fruit and vegetable smoothies, fresh squeezed juices, an assortment of muffins and pastries, croissant, empenadas, a wide assortment of appetizers, delicious salads and soups, 40 craft beers, and a very nice wine selection. The Sheraton has a private entrance that is walking distance to Legoland California. After an active day at the park return to the serenity and beauty of the award winning resort and spa. On any given evening when the sun begins to set over the ocean, TWENTY/20 comes alive with an equal mixture
tapas, the ceviche tapas and the grilled fish tacos! In a June article titled “5 Must Try Margaritas in San Diego,” Zagat featured the TWENTY/20 Spanish Margarita, made from jalapeno infused agave nectar, shaken with Torres liqueur, lime, orange and Fortaleza Blanco, with Spanish brandy-muddled blackberry spooned on top.
The TWENTY/20 serves breakfast, lunch and dinner. Latitude 33 is a female owned partnership brewery with a female president located in the old Green Flash facility in Vista. It’s name originates from being located on the 33rd parallel north which is a circle of latitude that is located 33 degrees north of Earth’s equatorial plane and crosses North America, Asia, the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans. There are biblical stories and mysteries that have occurred along the 33rd parallel. Many of their beers are named after events and locations along the 33rd parallel such as the South Carolina Coast, Phoenix, the Anza Borrego Desert, and subtropical sailing routes. The San Diego Reader named them one of San Diego’s Top Ten Breweries in 2013. There are about 85 micro breweries is San Diego County, but what makes this one stand out is their great tasting beer. We can’t say enough how much we enjoy their beer. Their best selling 22-oz bottle
is their Vanilla’s Porter and comes on tap with either CO2 or nitrogen. This beer is our favorite and is extremely smooth with a refreshing creamy vanilla flavor. It’s absolutely delicious! Their best seller on tap in bars and restaurants is their amazing Carolina Honey Hips. It’s made with rose hips, orange peel and local honey from Vista! This year they acquired a nitro tap that uses nitrogen instead of CO2. They offer guests one nitro version of a flagship or specialty beer on any given day. The nitro makes smaller bubbles and adds a creamier Guiness-like head with a smoother body. They also use a Randall, which is a device that filters already fermented and kegged beer through different additives and hops. Latitude 33 tasting room is a hidden jewel located at 1430 Vantage Ct #104, Vista 92081. Hours: Closed Mon-Tue; 3-8 Wed; Sat 12-7; Sun 12-5. Call (760) 598-2337 or visit www.lat33brew.com.

Solterra Winery and Kitchen is a local family owned and operated winery, tasting bar, and kitchen on Highway 101, just steps from the beach in Leucadia. Solterra has live music three days a week and the kitchen is run by chef Susie Williams who recently won TV’s popular cooking reality show called Chef Wanted. North County residents are happy for Solterra Winery and Kitchen’s newly crowned TV cooking show award-winning chef, Susie Williams. Many of us were concerned about losing her to a famous Beverly Hills restaurant, until she turned down the TV shows prize offer and remains the head chef at Solterra! With multiple award-winning wines and an award-winning chef, The Van Alyea family, a young married couple with a toddler and a lovely Golden Retriever, are answering the dreams of North County residents and visitors who love fine wine, great food, and the SoCal beach lifestyle. Solterra Winery and Kitchen is a full service winery, tasting bar and kitchen and is, beyond a shadow of a doubt, a destination winery on the map of Encinitas and San Diego County.
Their 5,000 sq.ft. facility features stunning architecture with high ceilings and large open windows gazing out onto Hwy 101. The winery is a wood barrel room with fermentation tanks, crusher and press. Adjacent to the winery is a full kitchen, bar and dining room. The two most interesting features are their bocce ball court in the back of the winery, and their famous concrete outdoor fire pit bar that seats up to 20, located just inches from the sidewalk and passers by. Happy Hour is 3:00 to
of locals and hotel guests. Happy Hour is 7 days a week from 3 to 6pm with 1/2 OFF select Spanish tapas, $2 OFF specialty cocktails, $4 draft beers and $6 sangria which is their own in-house red or white and absolutely delicious. We highly recommend the beef tenderloin

Close your eyes and you’ll swear you’re in Munich, where Oktoberfest originated more than 200 years ago celebrating the marriage of Ludwig, Crown Prince of Bavaria, to Princess Therese of SaxeHildburghausen in 1810. The event revolves around live German music, a wonderful German dinner with three kinds of sausage, potato salad and sauerkraut, provided by Tip Top Meats, the iconic German market, butcher shop and restaurant in Carlsbad. For kids, there’s a Pumpkin Patch, where children can decorate pumpkins and compete for prizes, along with inflatable jumps, clowns, face painting, caricaturists, an obstacle course, arts and crafts, and an antique fire truck, courtesy of the Carlsbad Fire Department. The Carlsbad Rotary Oktoberfest is a unique event with roots that speak to Rotary’s motto of “Service above Self.” As co-chair John “Hansel” Thill of the Rotary Club of Carlsbad said, “It began in 1982 as a small fundraiser to help the late Glenn McComas, a former Carlsbad City Council member and Rotarian, who became paralyzed from the neck down after falling off a ladder in his backyard. Members of our two Rotary clubs came together to raise funds to renovate Glenn’s house to accommodate his disability so he could return home from a VA Hospital. Rotarians raised the money and did the remodeling.” Every year since then, the Rotary clubs have joined forces to present the event for the benefit of nonprofits and betterment of the community. Carlsbad Mayor Matt Hall,
observed, “Oktoberfest is a Carlsbad tradition and fun for the entire family. Every dime raised goes to support worthy local causes.” To date, the Carlsbad Rotary Clubs have raised more than $1 million, all of which is distributed to local nonprofit charities and organizations, educational scholarships and community projects. Beneficiaries have included the Carlsbad Boys and Girls Club, the Carlsbad Explorers Post, Agua Hedionda Lagoon Foundation, and the Carlsbad Women’s Shelter. Admission is free. Get Your Eyes Checked This Summer So often we neglect taking care of our eyes and our vision. Sometimes we don’t pay enough attention if we have dry eyes, blurred vision, or easily get eye infections….especially during the dry months of summer. Don’t take your eyes for granted and take the time to make an appointment with someone that has an extensive background in ocular diseases and conditions. If you are looking for a caring and professional optometrist, then we recommend Dr. Kristin Peterson- Salgado of Solana Beach Family Optometry. Dr. Kristin Peterson-Salgado graduated from the University of California, Davis in 1993 with high honors then went on and graduated from the University of California, Berkeley School of Optometry in 1997. For 13 years she has been practicing medically-based optometry with a focus on ocular disease, geriatrics, traditional and hard-to-fit contact lenses, diabetic exams, and Lasik or cataract surgery pre-operative exams.

North County, San Marcos, and California State University San Marcos welcomes the new student housing development called “The QUAD” of North City which is quickly becoming the residence of choice for CSUSM students. The Quad cheered on its first residents last fall and quickly filled its occupancy with signed rental agreements while construction crews were busily finishing the first phase of its ultra modern 158,000 sq. ft. complex adjacent to the campus. The QUAD, when built out will house 1,500 CSUSM residents. “The QUAD is the first vertical development of what we envision as a true mixed use, people-oriented community,” said developer Michael McDonald, president of Urban Villages San Marcos. “The proximity to CSUSM and its students will give North City a vibrancy that is unique to North County, and create an exciting extension of the University where students can live, play and work.” The QUAD lease to students includes all utilities. The modern apartments also feature sustainable design elements, as well as a full kitchen with stainless steel appliances, contemporary furnishings, ample bathrooms and a flat screen TV in the shared lounge. Available floor plans include four single bedrooms with two bathrooms, three double bedrooms with three bathrooms and four double bedrooms with four bathrooms. Other amenities include an outdoor barbecue area, swimming pool, sauna, exercise facility, lounge areas, and study rooms. A big bonus is retail space attached with restaurants. Across the street will be CSUSM’s new stadium that is slated for 2016. For leasing questions or retail information contact www. thequadsanmarcos.com.

Festival of Sail Welcomes Tall Ships at San Diego Waterfront August 29 – September 1 50,000 people are expected to attend this year’s Festival of Sail, hosted by the Maritime Museum of San Diego. The festival transforms the North Embarcadero into a nautical theme park. More than twenty tall ships and other fascinating vessels from around the world visit San Diego, August 29 through September 1. The festival kicks off with a majestic parade of tall ships on San Diego Bay, Thursday, August 28. Parade begins at 11am and can be seen from the embarcadero, Harbor Island, Shelter Island and Coronado. Festival visitors enjoy touring the ships, marvelous food and drink from dozens of restaurant booths, a petting zoo, pirates, cannon battles on the bay, sunset cruises and shop for one of-a-kind items among more than 150 festival vendors. The grand parade of sail begins on San Diego Bay at 11am on August 28 with more than a dozen majestic windjammers that sail into San Diego’s harbor in a magnificent nautical procession. The best spots to view from shore include the Maritime Museum, Cabrillo National Monument, local restaurants and businesses on Shelter Island, Harbor Island and the North Embarcadero. (Ships scheduled to appear in the parade is subject to change). Ships should be docked by 2pm at the museum and open for visitation starting on Friday, August 29 at 9am. The festival includes more than twenty tall ships and other extraordinary vessels from around the world. The official tall ship of California, the Californian, the Gaff topsail schooner Bill of Rights, Irving and Exy Johnson’s, twin ships from San Pedro, and many more. A complete list of the participating ships can be found on the museum’s
website at www.sdmaritime.org. (The list of ships scheduled to appear in the festival is subject to change). Join the crew for a cannon battle at sea and experience naval warfare during the age of sail! Several ships engage in cannon battle reenactments on San Diego Bay during the festival. Individuals can purchase tickets to be on board for the experience. Tickets are $65 for adults and $40 for children 12 and under. This is not recommended for children under 5. A 2014 tall ships ticket is required. Cannon battle sails do sell out so we suggest that people get their tickets early. The twelve pound cannons, known as Napoleons, are authentic Civil War cannons built in 1863, not replicas. The museum’s Shore Battery Artillery Team also salutes the ships with several rounds of fire as they pass by during the parade. The unit demonstrates how the guns are cleaned and then fires the 3 and 4 pound guns for a “noon salute” each day. They also fire volleys at the ships during the Gun Battles on the Bay.
Admission to the village where the museum is building a replica of Juan Rodriguez’s ship, San Salvador, is included with festival admission. Watch the ship take shape as master shipbuilders create this magnificent galleon. Village also includes demonstrations by the Kumeyaay, blacksmithing, sailing making, and much more. Site is located at 4300 N. Harbor at the intersection of Spanish Landing Way and N. Harbor Dr across from the airport. The Festival of Sail is located along the North Embarcadero between Ash and Grape Street. Parking is limited. We urge festival visitors to use public transportation. A children’s petting zoo will be open Sat, Sun and Mon from 11am-4pm. The petting zoo is included with admission. Visitors must purchase a tall ships ticket to tour the festival ships. Tickets are $5-$7. Tickets include entrance to the Maritime Museum of San Diego during the event and the build site for the construction of the new ship the San Salvador. 38th Annual World Bodysurfing Championships at Oceanside Pier Aug 16-17, Saturday and Sunday, 6:30am start Over 350 of the best of the best bodysurfers from around the world once again will be kicking, stroking, catching and competing at the 38th Annual World Bodysurfing Championships the weekend of August 16-17 at the Oceanside Pier in Oceanside. The contest starts at 6:30am each morning. The Heat Schedule for Saturday is being posted on the World Bodysurfing Championships website on August 14. On Sunday, August 17 the Quarter Finals, the Semis and Finals are taking place for all age brackets. The Men and Women’s Grand Champions follow the last age group Final, and are crowned thereafter. The WBC reserves the right to change the projected schedule for various weather, surf conditions and number of competitors.
The World Bodysurfing Championships in Oceanside and the Pipeline Bodysurfing Classic on Oahu, Hawaii are the two biggest bodysurfing competitions in the world. The World Bodysurfing Championship began in 1977, and runs every August in Oceanside. For those unfamiliar with the sport of bodysurfing: bodysurfers ride waves without the assistance of any buoyant device such as a surfboard or bodyboard. Bodysurfers typically equip themselves only with a pair of specialized swim fins that help to optimize propulsion so it is easier to catch large and fast breaking waves. One of the most famous and treacherous bodysurfing spots in the world is The Wedge in Balboa at Newport Beach, California, just
up the coast from us. Wave faces at The Wedge can reach upwards of 30 ft. or more on big southern hemisphere and hurricane-generated swells during the spring, summer, and fall. For more info, visit www. worldbodysurfing. org.

Now in its eighth year, the surf comp has become a laid back event complete with a music festival, and attitude. Brian Terhorst, co-founder of the RSSS, says, “these surfers are some of the best on the planet and I don’t know where you can see this level of surfing in San Diego. Our events are open to the public and family friendly.”The green beach element will be in full swing this summer at
the RSSS with The Surfrider Foundation, SD Coastkeeper, Progress Mfg. and Wildcoast on site, raising awareness towards issues including water quality, marine life conservation, coastal access, protecting our surf spots, recycling & more. Beach cleanups are orchestrated during and after each event by the SD Coastkeepers Org. The event includes a $10,000 purse. Red Bull, the official energy drink of the RSSS, will present world-class DJ’s, athlete autograph signings, brand ambassadors and an outdoor lounge where fans and athletes can relax and re-fuel.
