History of Hansen Surfboards on Display at California Surf Museum “Hansen Surfboards—A 50 Year Retrospective,” opens on Sunday, Sept. 18 at The California Surf Museum in Oceanside. This special display will highlight the legendary Encinitas surf shop, their special story and family history. It chronicles Don Hansen’s move to the West Coast from South Dakota, where he was introduced to surfing.

His college dorm roommates got him hooked, and Don soon realized that he belonged in California. He quickly became well known at San Diego surf spots.

Don Hansen made his mark shaping surfboards for Jack O’Neill and moved to North Shore in Hawaii. There he began shaping and selling his own line of boards beginning in 1961. Today Hansen is the largest surf shop in San Diego.

The Carlsbad Coastal Winery again provides wine selections, including tastings,

and is hosting a grape stomp that was very popular last year, with separate barrels for adults and kids.

Live music plays continuously this year, featuring the international Oktoberfest music artist Faith Page, along with polka music from German bands Roger and the New Villagers and The Pacific Coast Community Band. For the first time, live Rock & Roll is included in the festivities with the addition of the Carlsbad bands The Skape Goats and The Last Call.

Once again, the event offers the popular Rotary Pumpkin Patch where children can decorate pumpkins and compete for prizes in different age groups. Moon jumps, clowns, face painting and caricaturists keep all the little ones (and their parents!) entertained.

The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society Hosts 13th Annual Light the Night Walk November 4, Friday, 6pm The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, the world’s largest voluntary health agency dedicated to blood cancer, is hosting its 13th Annual Light the Night Walk on November 4. The Light the Night Walk is an inspirational two-mile walk that brings together thousands of individuals to raise funds for lifesaving blood cancer research and critical patient and family services.

“More than 957,000 Americans are battling leukemia, lymphoma and myeloma and it’s our goal to raise money to help those individuals live better, longer lives.

Halloween at Self-Realization Fellowship, Encinitas October 31 In late summer and early fall every year, many locals are accustomed to seeing the fields overlooking the Self-Realization Fellowship (SRF) Encinitas Retreat, Hermitage and Meditation Gardens (215 K Street, Encinitas) speckled with big, round orange pumpkins.

After their early fall harvesting, some of these pumpkins are donated to charity organizations and schools. But about 100 are set aside for the week before Halloween, when they are carved by SRF monks, who whittle and shape them into truly fantastic works of art. The creatively

rendered pumpkins take on entirely new personalities, as, for example, the faces of famous people from past and present or as artistic scenes from nature. Kids will be delighted to see pumpkins that represent some of their favorite cartoon and action figures.

A participant in the Halloween activities of the Downtown Encinitas Main Street Association (which transforms a portion of South Coast Highway 101 into Pumpkin Lane), SRF places its carved pumpkins on display in various locations on Halloween night. Animal care staff at the San Diego Zoo has been undertaking the delicate procedure of introducing female Goliath

bird-eating spiders to prospective mates. The zoo’s female arachnid, representing the largest spider species in the world, is approximately the size of a human hand and is capable of eating small birds and reptiles.

Introductions between spider sexes is tricky because the female could seriously damage or even kill a male if the timing is not right. The mating game is dramatic and can also be deadly. “We have to monitor these animals closely to make sure that the female is in a receptive time for breeding and that the males are old enough to breed,” said Chris Mooney, San Diego Zoo Entomology keeper. “We also watch the process closely so that we can intervene before one of the spiders is injured.” If the breeding program becomes successful, San Diego Zoo entomology staff will soon be raising hundreds of these large spiders.

New Family Weekend Activities at the San Dieguito Heritage Museum Saturdays and Sundays Noon to 4pm Beginning October 8 The San Dieguito Heritage Museum is offering free history activities for families on Saturdays and Sundays, from noon until 4pm, beginning October 8. Each weekend there will be free hands-on experiences that highlight a certain era of San Dieguito history.

Eagle Scout Gives Back to His Preschool Connor Cook worked tirelessly to help enhance La Costa Valley Preschool and Kindergarten’s schoolyard through his Eagle Scout Leadership Project. His Scout Troop #777, along with skilled Photo: Connor Cook volunteers, assisted Connor and followed his project guidelines for construction of four tree planter boxes with benches, a garden planter box for blueberries plus weedblocking and spreading bark in the school’s huge garden.

Two full weekends of on-site work and numerous hours prior to the construction was required of Connor. He also raised all funds for his project. The cost exceeded $1,500 in materials.

Connor attended preschool at La Costa Valley Preschool and Kindergarten and wanted to provide something to enhance the school for today’s students and future students. The children invited Connor back to school to thank him and to learn how he and the troop constructed the boxes. The children were most impressed he was once a preschool student in their school.

The museum will use artifacts from its collections whenever possible for these activities. The Museum’s exhibits will be open during the activity times with docents to guide you through the fascinating history of San Dieguito. With these new intergenerational activities, families will come to understand that they can visit the Heritage Museum on any given weekend and enjoy a new and interesting experience.

While at the Museum, visit their new Al’s Barbershop exhibit. See a recreation of the barbershop that was on Coast Highway 101 from the 1930s to the 1950s. See the antique chair and all the tools of the trade.

New Live Beehive Exhibit at Carlsbad Lagoon The Lagoon Discovery Center in Carlsbad is pleased to announce a new live beehive exhibit. People of all ages can take a peek into the inner workings of a live hive, watch the busy buzzing, and try to spot the queen bee. The demonstration hive features glass panels which hold the bees’ internal hive structure; a denselypacked matrix of cells made of beeswax called honeycomb.

The bees use the cells to store food (honey and pollen), and to house the “brood” (eggs, larvae, and pupae).

The Lagoon Discovery Center’s hive has been carefully designed to allow the bees access to come and go outside as they please. A pipe has been erected outside to allow them access and even includes a landing pad for easier re-entry.

In addition to the Beehive Exhibit, families will delight in meeting the Discovery Center’s resident critters, like the bearded dragon “Lincoln”, the tree frog “Lady Lime Legs” and “Rosie” the rosy boa snake.

The San Dieguito Heritage Museum is providing displays depicting the “yesterday” of Encinitas. Many cultural and community groups are showcasing the best of what Encinitas offers “today,” and an area displaying future City projects.

In conjunction with the City of Encinitas’ 25th Anniversary Party, the San Dieguito Heritage Museum

is presenting its 3rd annual Lima Bean Cook-off. The event is free. There is live entertainment noon to 4pm.

Both amateur and professional cooks compete to create the tastiest Lima Bean appetizer, soup, salad or main dish, and there is a separate category for ‘anything else’! Lima beans will be provided by the Lima Bean Council of California. There are prizes for all the winning entries.

Benefiting North County’s Family Homelessness Solution Program October 8

One of the most highly anticipated events of the season is Vista-based non-profit Solutions for Change An Evening to Remember…with Condoleezza Rice. This amazing event will help raise funds for San Diego’s North County homeless shelter, Solutions for Change.

TaylorMade Golf Company in Carlsbad will be the presenting sponsor of the black-tie gala, at which Condoleezza Rice, Secretary of State (2005-2009) and distinguished Stanford University professor, will be the keynote speaker on October 8 at Rancho Bernardo Inn. The event will feature dinner, a live auction, a performance

by singer-songwriter Chantal Kreviazuk, and Dr. Rice’s speech.

King Crimson Front Man Adrian Belew to Perform at Belly Up Tavern Interview with Andy Lee One of the most progressive, versatile and innovative guitarists of our time, Adrian Belew, along with two original members of the rock group King Crimson will be blowing minds of a (most likely) raucus crowd at the Belly Up Tavern the night of October 19.

Belew has a resume longer than most people’s arms. His singing, songwriting, guitar playing career took off when he became discovered by Frank Zappa in 1977. He went on to make 8 albums with Zappa, then toured and recorded with David Bowie from 1978-1979 and again in 1990, recorded 5 albums with the Talking Heads from 1980, became the new front man for King Crimson in 1981 and recorded more than 30 albums with them. He’s also played with Paul Simon, Robert Palmer, Joe Cocker, Herbie Hancock, and Jeff Beck, and has his own band, the Bears.

Andy: How do you describe your guitar work?

Belew: I take the guitar to places unlike anyone else. I incorporate lots of sounds, techniques and styles. I emulate instruments, drums, and animal sounds.

Andy: What type of artist are you?

Belew: I’m not a hit recording artist. That’s not what I do.

The best way to describe me is a “colorist.”

Andy: Who inspired you to play when you first started out?

Belew: Mostly the Beatles, and others like Jeff Beck and Hendrix. I recently played a concert with Beck at Royal Albert Hall.

Andy: What kind of guitar do you play?

Belew: I play a Parker Fly. It’s the Ferrari of guitars. I helped with the design and had it custom made for me.

Andy: Tell me about your tour.

Belew: We leave on Monday and play 33 cities in 6 weeks.

10th Annual Oceanside Music Festival This year’s OMFest offers 7 concerts, boasting a variety of music genres and showcasing both student and professional musicians throughout Southern California.

Interview with So You Think You Can Dance Season 8 Winner Melanie Moore

By Andy Lee I had the pleasure of interviewing Melanie Moore, So You Think You Can Dance Season 8 winner. She was back stage getting ready to go into a three-hour rehearsal.

The following night was the opening night of their 32-city nationwide tour. Coincidentally, it also happened to be Melanie’s 20th birthday! The show opened in Orlando

Florida and will come to an end, right here in San Diego, at the Valley View Casino Center, on November 2, 2011.

M: I think either Sasha or Marco or Jess. Sasha’s been on tour with Adam Lambert, Marco has done a lot of commercial dancing on TV, and Jess has done some Broadway.

A: Do you have your own, special, signature, Melanie dance move that you rely on?

M: I don’t know. We all have our own signature moves that we all do. Ha ha. Mine is the Penche forward roll.

Everybody tends to like it. I totally rely on it. It’s when I put my leg up behind me and I do a forward roll.

A: There were two routines that you did that stand out in my mind, I think it was your first routine called Turn to Stone, and another when you did a giant running leap into someone’s arms...have you ever done anything that insane before?

M: Yes, that was my first routine I did with Marco, and the leap was with Neil Haskell, one of the All-Stars. I don’t think I’ve ever done anything that insane. I really enjoyed it. Neil was a great partner. We started out with some small leaps and grew that into the huge across the floor leap.

A: Lady Gaga threw her shoe to you and Sasha after you both did a magnificent performance together. Who has that shoe now?

M: Well, Sasha got that shoe. And, the shoe that Lady Gaga threw at (the choreographer) Sonya, Sonya later gave it

to me. And, Lady Gaga signed both of them. So we each have a shoe.

A: After the show ended, how soon did you guys start rehearsing for the tour?

M: We had only a week off, but I did Regis and Kelly and all those shows during my week off. It was like a working week off. We’ve been rehearsing now for almost four weeks.

Honestly, I’m losing track of time.

A: Have you had any offers since the show?

M: I got a couple of offers on a TV show, but nothing is official yet. We aren’t allowed to pursue anything until after the tour. So, I’ll have to wait and see. Ha ha.

Hoot, Howl and Prowl at Blue Sky Ecological Reserve in Poway October 22 Come join the most popular Blue Sky Ecological Reserve event of the year! 2nd Annual Del Mar Mud Run 5k October 15, Sat, 8am-2pm Finishing a race has never been as downright dirty as it is in Del Mar. VAVi Sports & Social Club presents the 2nd annual Del Mar Mud Run 5k on Saturday, October 15.

The obstacle course resembles that of a boot camp with a short wall, belly crawl, cargo net climb, a hay bale obstacle, and, of course, plenty of slimy mud pits. The course is a challenge for all fitness levels, and most teams and individuals complete the course within 30 minutes to an hour.

Registration options include individual competitor, fourperson team and unlimited team sign-ups (for groups of five or more), with each category ranging in price. Race times are at 8am and continue every hour until 2pm. Awards are given out in each time slot for best Mud Run times, in addition to a contest judging the best costumes worn for the race.

Encinitas Educational Foundation First Annual Golf Tournament “FORE! the Kids” October 11, Tuesday, 12:30pm The Encinitas Educational Foundation (EEF) will hold its second annual golf tournament “FORE! the Kids” on Tuesday, October 11, at The Crosby Golf Club in Rancho Santa Fe. The tournament benefits the Encinitas Educational Foundation (EEF)- a private, non-profit fundraising organization that promotes and supports nine elementary schools in the Encinitas Union School District.

Island-to-Island Waterman Charity Paddleboard Relay Santa Barbara Island to Catalina October 8, Saturday, 7am Start

The Island-to-Island long-distance, open–ocean paddleboard race will take place on Saturday, October 8, 2011. This is the only second race of its kind in Southern California.

Giles Douglas, 60, resident of Encinitas, California, produced the first trans-channel island paddleboard race in 2004, and is doing so again this year, only it’s much bigger this time around. Last time, 72 men and women paddleboarders participated in 32 mixed relay teams.

Douglas, a well-respected waterman, used to compete in every major paddleboard race in California, Hawaii, and Australia until a boating accident in Malaysia in December 2009 almost took his life. After months of multiple surgeries and being in a foreign hospital, he has now returned to Encinitas. Thankful to be alive, Douglas is putting on this event and is donating its proceeds to the City of Hope for Prostate Cancer Research.

The Island-to-Island Waterman Relay will begin at Santa Barbara Island at 7am, October 8, and will end at the Isthmus,of Catalina Island. The event will include four separate classes in teams of three: Stand Up paddle 14’; Traditional lay down paddleboards; OC 1’s; and Surf Ski’s. The course travels due east and is approximately 28 nautical miles.

At 3pm the gate opens to the event and at 3:30 one of California’s best Polynesian shows will begin. An awards

It’s about the ocean and the connection of all things. For them, surfing is a form of selfexpression as well as a way of life, but is it also a microcosm of life on this planet? In this film we are brought to a place where there is everything and nothing, an image found in eastern thought and a concept found in quantum physics.

The California Surf Festival concludes with the Big Shorts from Little Groms film contest for filmmakers 19 years old and younger. Groms who submit entries will get their chance at showing their 5-minute short films on the big screen. The best shorts receive prizes and air time on the California Surf Festival website.

A lifetime achievement honor, the annually presented “Silver Surfer Award” will be given to a surfer who has made significant contributions to the culture and lifestyle of the surfing community. Past recipients are Gary Linden and Linda Benson. This year’s award is going to legendary surfer and shaper Skip Frye.

Admission to the Silver Surfer Award ceremony on Sunday is free to the public and all are welcome.

October is Kids Free Month at the San Diego Zoo and Safari Park We’ve Got Free Adult Admission Tickets Too! It’s October, and that means kids are free—well, maybe not from homework, chores, soccer practice, or dance lessons, but children do have free admission to the San Diego Zoo and the San Diego Zoo Safari Park all month long. From October 1 to 31, children ages 3 to 11 can visit either the Zoo or the Park for free when accompanied by a paid adult. What a great opportunity to meet meerkats, greet giraffes, say hello to hippos and explore all that the Zoo and Park have to offer!

In addition to more than 4,000 animals at the Zoo and over 3,500 at the Safari Park, there is a whole host of special weekend activities at both places for kids to jump into and make the most of their visits. At the Zoo, Dr. Zoolittle—the delightful doctor of discovery—will make you laugh and gasp as he reveals astounding animal feats in the Nature’s Tricks show.
