Old Globe Theatre Richard O’Brien’s The Rocky Horror Show Now through November 6 When Brad and Janet, a clean-cut young couple from the suburbs, get caught with a flat in the middle of nowhere, they seek help from the devilishly charming transvestite Dr. Frank N. Furter. What they discover in his mysterious laboratory is a time warp of sexual and scientific possibilities - and, perhaps, true love. The musical that became a movie and started a 35- year nonstop cultural phenomenon is back where it is meant to be seen—live on stage. Somewhere Now through October 30 Old Globe Playwright-in-Residence Matthew Lopez’s poignant new play is about one family’s attempt to make its fantasy a reality. Gorgeous dance sequences are woven throughout the play and help to tell the story of Inez Candelaria and her three children’s dream of a life in show business. With their building scheduled for demolition and their life together beginning to crumble, the filming of the West Side Story on the streets of their soon to be abandoned New York City neighborhood brings reality finally into focus. A World Premiere. Twelfth Night November 6 – November 13 Shipwrecked on the rocky coast of Illyria, the lovely and plucky Viola disguises herself as a man to protect her honor in this strange land and finds employment as a page in the court of the lovesick Duke Orsino. But just as Viola falls in love with her new boss, the beautiful Olivia—whom Orsino is pursuing—finds herself attracted to this new
young man, who’s really Viola in disguise. Meanwhile, the servant Maria and the drunken Sir Toby Belch conspire to enact a riotous revenge on the hilariously presumptuous servant Malvolio. This magical comedy is filled with Shakespeare’s most indelible comedic characters and sidesplitting situations. Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas! November 19 – December 31 Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas! is a wonderful, whimsical musical based upon the classic Dr. Seuss book. Back for its 14th incredible year, the family favorite features the songs “This Time of Year,” “Santa for a Day” and “Fah Who Doraze,” the delightful carol from the popular animated version of How the Grinch Stole Christmas! Celebrate the holidays as the Old Globe Theatre is once again transformed into the snow-covered Whoville, right down to the last can of Who-hash. Some Lovers November 26 – December 31 Award winner Steven Sater (Spring Awakening) presents a World Premiere musical that re- imagines The Gift of the Magi, the classic O. Henry Christmas tale, for today’s audiences. On Christmas Eve, estranged lovers Molly and Ben are haunted by the memory of happier times, and like the unforgettable melody of a favorite song, their memories conspire to bring them together again. A timeless love story that takes place over 20 years, Some Lovers features a new score by Bacharach. Call (619) 234-5623 or purchase tickets online at www. TheOldGlobe.org. The Old Globe is located in San Diego’s Balboa Park at 1363 Old Globe Way.

La Jolla Playhouse Jesus Christ Superstar November 18 - December 31 La Jolla Playhouse welcomes Director Emeritus Des McAnuff back home with his acclaimed Stratford Shakespeare Festival production of Jesus Christ Superstar. This ground-breaking rock opera tells the story of the last week of Christ’s life. The zeal with which Christ’s followers are hailing him as the Son of God becomes a source of dismay to his disciple Judas Iscariot. Fearing that this tide of religious fervor will provoke brutal repression by the occupying Romans, Judas must make his fateful choice between faith and betrayal. Twenty years later, times have changed, but the goal of the Julian Pie Company remains the same, to provide the most enjoyable pie eating experience ever. They now have facilities in Julian and Santa Ysabel and deliver fresh pies without preservatives to San Diego and Riverside counties and ship pies throughout the United States. If you’ve never had the pleasure of enjoying a fresh Julian Pie Company pie, your taste buds are missing out on a delightful experience. Try their Natural Apple Pie. It’s made with sweet apples and sweet apple cider. It doesn’t have any preservatives, artificial flavors, sweeteners or sugar added. It’s absolutely delicious! Komen 3-Day Walk for the Cure is a 60-mile walk for women and men who want to make a personal difference in the fight to end breast cancer. Since its inception in 2003, the Komen 3-Day Walk for the Cure has raised more than $500 million. It features fully-digital mammography which provides the best images available allowing radiologists to see abnormalities that were previously undetectable. There are 12 licensed technologists with advanced registries in mammography with 15+ years of experience each. The diagnostic center offers the most advanced care administered with the total woman in mind. Every detail, from the first hello, what the staff wears, the all-in-one changing and exam rooms, to how and when patients are told their results, is geared to make the experience as relaxing as possible. When patients leave, they will either know they are OK or what the next steps are—no one is left to wonder and worry. If the patient is at the center for something other than a routine mammogram a radiologist will discuss the results before the patient leaves. The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society Hosts 13th Annual Light the Night Walk November 4, Friday, 6pm The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, the world’s largest voluntary health agency dedicated to blood cancer, is hosting its 13th Annual Light the Night Walk on November 4. The Light the Night Walk is an inspirational two-mile walk that brings together thousands of individuals to raise funds for lifesaving blood cancer research and critical patient and family services. “More than 957,000 Americans are battling leukemia, lymphoma and myeloma and it’s our goal to raise money to help those individuals live better, longer lives. The Walk is our opportunity to do just that and pay tribute and commemorate lives touched by cancer,” said Kristin Sacco, Deputy Executive Director of the San Diego/Hawaii Chapter. “This event is an experience unlike any other and truly brings light to the dark world of cancer. I guarantee that everyone participating in the Walk will be touched in some way.” Walkers join together at twilight holding illuminated balloons—white for survivors, red for supporters and gold to remember
those lost to cancer. In addition to the Walk, the evening’s festivities include music, food and family activities. Last year, almost 4,000 walkers participated in the Walk and more than $420,000 was raised. Check-in is at 6pm at Balboa Park. The opening ceremony begins at 7pm and the Walk starts at 7:30pm. Celebrate World Arthritis Day with Massage Envy October 12 The national Healing Hands campaign for Arthritis will take place on World Arthritis Day, October 12, at all 700 Massage Envy locations across the country. $10 from every one-hour massage and facial session will be donated to the Arthritis Foundation. In addition to the $10 massage donation, Massage Envy’s exclusive skin care partner, Murad®, will donate 10% of all sales of skincare products sold during the event, and Wyndmere will also donate 10% of all retail products sold at both Massage Envys and Massage Envy Spas during the event. Any additional monetary donations from the public to the Arthritis Foundation can be made on or before October 12 at any Massage Envy location. Massage Envy partnered with the Arthritis Foundation earlier this year to serve as a national sponsor of the
Arthritis foundation’s 200 Arthritis Walk events. Halloween at Self-Realization Fellowship, Encinitas October 31 In late summer and early fall every year, many locals are accustomed to seeing the fields overlooking the Self-Realization Fellowship (SRF) Encinitas Retreat, Hermitage and Meditation Gardens (215 K Street, Encinitas) speckled with big, round orange pumpkins. After their early fall harvesting, some of these pumpkins are donated to charity organizations and schools. But about 100 are set aside for the week before Halloween, when they are carved by SRF monks, who whittle and shape them into truly fantastic works of art. The creatively
rendered pumpkins take on entirely new personalities, as, for example, the faces of famous people from past and present or as artistic scenes from nature. Kids will be delighted to see pumpkins that represent some of their favorite cartoon and action figures. A participant in the Halloween activities of the Downtown Encinitas Main Street Association (which transforms a portion of South Coast Highway 101 into Pumpkin Lane), SRF places its carved pumpkins on display in various locations on Halloween night. You can view them in front of SRF Books & Gifts (1150 S. Coast Hwy., Encinitas), under the SRF ashram’s Lotus Towers (on S. Coast Hwy., near K Street, Encinitas), and in several other locations. In addition, on Halloween night, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., the parking lot of SRF Books & Gifts will be transformed into a family-friendly magical landscape holding a castle and fairy queen’s court. Kids can receive treats, including blessings from the queen. For more information, call (760) 753-2888. For information about the SRF Temple visit www.encinitastemple.org.

Animal care staff at the San Diego Zoo has been undertaking the delicate procedure of introducing female Goliath
bird-eating spiders to prospective mates. The zoo’s female arachnid, representing the largest spider species in the world, is approximately the size of a human hand and is capable of eating small birds and reptiles. Introductions between spider sexes is tricky because the female could seriously damage or even kill a male if the timing is not right. The mating game is dramatic and can also be deadly. “We have to monitor these animals closely to make sure that the female is in a receptive time for breeding and that the males are old enough to breed,” said Chris Mooney, San Diego Zoo Entomology keeper. “We also watch the process closely so that we can intervene before one of the spiders is injured.” If the breeding program becomes successful, San Diego Zoo entomology staff will soon be raising hundreds of these large spiders.

Eagle Scout Gives Back to His Preschool Connor Cook worked tirelessly to help enhance La Costa Valley Preschool and Kindergarten’s schoolyard through his Eagle Scout Leadership Project. His Scout Troop #777, along with skilled Photo: Connor Cook volunteers, assisted Connor and followed his project guidelines for construction of four tree planter boxes with benches, a garden planter box for blueberries plus weedblocking and spreading bark in the school’s huge garden. Two full weekends of on-site work and numerous hours prior to the construction was required of Connor. He also raised all funds for his project. The cost exceeded $1,500 in materials. Connor attended preschool at La Costa Valley Preschool and Kindergarten and wanted to provide something to enhance the school for today’s students and future students. The children invited Connor back to school to thank him and to learn how he and the troop constructed the boxes. The children were most impressed he was once a preschool student in their school.

The Lagoon Discovery Center’s hive has been carefully designed to allow the bees access to come and go outside as they please. A pipe has been erected outside to allow them access and even includes a landing pad for easier re-entry. In addition to the Beehive Exhibit, families will delight in meeting the Discovery Center’s resident critters, like the bearded dragon “Lincoln”, the tree frog “Lady Lime Legs” and “Rosie” the rosy boa snake. Visitors will also enjoy the new Discovery Aquarium and touch tank, featuring a jeweled sea star, turban snail, and sunburst anemones. Bring your curiosity and discover all the fun at the Lagoon Discovery Center located at 1580 Cannon Road, Carlsbad, CA 92008 www aguahedionda.org. Hours: Tuesday – Friday 10am – 4pm Saturday & Sunday 12-4. Admission is free and donations are welcomed.

King Crimson Front Man Adrian Belew to Perform at Belly Up Tavern Interview with Andy Lee One of the most progressive, versatile and innovative guitarists of our time, Adrian Belew, along with two original members of the rock group King Crimson will be blowing minds of a (most likely) raucus crowd at the Belly Up Tavern the night of October 19. Belew has a resume longer than most people’s arms. His singing, songwriting, guitar playing career took off when he became discovered by Frank Zappa in 1977. He went on to make 8 albums with Zappa, then toured and recorded with David Bowie from 1978-1979 and again in 1990, recorded 5 albums with the Talking Heads from 1980, became the new front man for King Crimson in 1981 and recorded more than 30 albums with them. He’s also played with Paul Simon, Robert Palmer, Joe Cocker, Herbie Hancock, and Jeff Beck, and has his own band, the Bears.
Andy: How do you describe your guitar work? Belew: I take the guitar to places unlike anyone else. I incorporate lots of sounds, techniques and styles. I emulate instruments, drums, and animal sounds. Andy: What type of artist are you? Belew: I’m not a hit recording artist. That’s not what I do. The best way to describe me is a “colorist.” Andy: Who inspired you to play when you first started out? Belew: Mostly the Beatles, and others like Jeff Beck and Hendrix. I recently played a concert with Beck at Royal Albert Hall. Andy: What kind of guitar do you play? Belew: I play a Parker Fly. It’s the Ferrari of guitars. I helped with the design and had it custom made for me. Cost about $10,000. Andy: Tell me about your tour. Belew: We leave on Monday and play 33 cities in 6 weeks. You will never see another show like this. It’s going to be a very special event. For the complete interview visit www.HotinNorthCounty.com

Interview with So You Think You Can Dance Season 8 Winner Melanie Moore By Andy Lee I had the pleasure of interviewing Melanie Moore, So You Think You Can Dance Season 8 winner. She was back stage getting ready to go into a three-hour rehearsal. The following night was the opening night of their 32-city nationwide tour. Coincidentally, it also happened to be Melanie’s 20th birthday! The show opened in Orlando
Florida and will come to an end, right here in San Diego, at the Valley View Casino Center, on November 2, 2011. For complete interview visit www.HotinNorthCounty.com/music A: Out of the top ten finalists, who had the most professional dance experience? M: I think either Sasha or Marco or Jess. Sasha’s been on tour with Adam Lambert, Marco has done a lot of commercial dancing on TV, and Jess has done some Broadway. A: Do you have your own, special, signature, Melanie dance move that you rely on? M: I don’t know. We all have our own signature moves that we all do. Ha ha. Mine is the Penche forward roll. Everybody tends to like it. I totally rely on it. It’s when I put my leg up behind me and I do a forward roll. A: There were two routines that you did that stand out in my mind, I think it was your first routine called Turn to Stone, and another when you did a giant running leap into someone’s arms...have you ever done anything that insane before? M: Yes, that was my first routine I did with Marco, and the leap was with Neil Haskell, one of the All-Stars. I don’t think I’ve ever done anything that insane. I really enjoyed it. Neil was a great partner. We started out with some small leaps and grew that into the huge across the floor leap. A: Lady Gaga threw her shoe to you and Sasha after you both did a magnificent performance together. Who has that shoe now? M: Well, Sasha got that shoe. And, the shoe that Lady Gaga threw at (the choreographer) Sonya, Sonya later gave it
to me. And, Lady Gaga signed both of them. So we each have a shoe. A: After the show ended, how soon did you guys start rehearsing for the tour? M: We had only a week off, but I did Regis and Kelly and all those shows during my week off. It was like a working week off. We’ve been rehearsing now for almost four weeks. Honestly, I’m losing track of time. A: Have you had any offers since the show? M: I got a couple of offers on a TV show, but nothing is official yet. We aren’t allowed to pursue anything until after the tour. So, I’ll have to wait and see. Ha ha.

No More Time Share Maintenance Fees, Property $699 7-Day California Taxes and Wasted Vacation Opportunities Coastal Cruise and Other Holiday Getaways ViaPointe works with individuals and families that are considering making their first purchase of a timeshare and also Resort Services Inc. works closely with current owners who have a vested interest in their deeded timeshares and consider their timeshare as an asset that should produce a return every year. Today’s timeshare owners realize that the value of a timeshare is not based on the deed but on how it is being used. Increased maintenance fees and special assessments tied to a deeded timeshare have gotten out of control. These fees must be paid every year, whether you use your time or not, and has owners upset and frustrated. ViaPointe Services Inc. has been successful in helping owners drastically reduce their maintenance fees and eliminating property taxes all together. As a result of today’s economy, many owners would like to be timeshare free. Timeshares are tough to sell, even in the best of times. ViaPointe Resort Services Inc. helps owners sell or liquidate their timeshares and instantly stop all fees by totally removing their name from the deed.
The more owners understand about their options through timeshare analysis, the better the odds are of maximizing the value of their timeshare. By upgrading existing owners to RCI Points, the owner’s vacation choices become limitless giving them access to all of RCI’s 6,500 resorts around the world. Owners also benefit from the added flexibility to use their points for cruises, hotel stays, major theme park tickets, airfares from over 300 airlines around the world, and car rentals. ViaPointe Resort Services, Inc. offers a no cost, no obligation analysis of current owner’s timeshare(s). Their analysis focuses on the owner’s concerns, increased maintenance fees, special assessments, vacation weeks going to waste, difficulties exchanging weeks, the need for more flexibility, or wanting to sell or liquidate their week(s). Through ViaPointe Resort Services Inc., owners develop a much better understanding and the ability to solve their problems. Visit their newest office located upstairs in the Carlsbad Village Faire Plaza, for a no-cost, no-obligation analysis of your timeshare week(s). Please stop by or call them at (760) 494-0211.

The California Surf Festival Celebrates awareness and support for surf history preservation through the California Surf Museum. The festival brings people from all around the world to Oceanside, California to experience surf culture through films, music, art, photography and interaction with the surfing community. The festival kicks off Thursday, October 13 with the documentary movie Mighty Uke. The Mighty Uke travels all over the world to discover why so many people from different nations, cultures, ages and musical tastes are turning to the ukulele to express themselves. Ukulele legend Bill Tapia (103 years old!) and Pat Enos are in concert after the movie. Bring your uke to play along. Celebrate the best female surfers in the world on Friday, October 14. During this star studded event, watch the USA premier of Oceanides, presented by the Keep-A-Breast Foundation. It is a poetic vision of surfers—nymphs— along the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans, Caribbean, Coral, and Tasmanian Seas. These places become the theater of marine and submarine visions of light and life. Watch The Still Point documentary on Saturday, October 15. The documentary highlights the ocean and waves as seen through the eyes and thoughts of some of the world’s most legendary water-men. It’s about the ocean and the connection of all things. For them, surfing is a form of selfexpression as well as a way of life, but is it also a microcosm of life on this planet? In this film we are brought to a place where there is everything and nothing, an image found in eastern thought and a concept found in quantum physics. The California Surf Festival concludes with the Big Shorts from Little Groms film contest for filmmakers 19 years old and younger. Groms who submit entries will get their chance at showing their 5-minute short films on the big screen. The best shorts receive prizes and air time on the California Surf Festival website. A lifetime achievement honor, the annually presented “Silver Surfer Award” will be given to a surfer who has made significant contributions to the culture and lifestyle of the surfing community. Past recipients are Gary Linden and Linda Benson. This year’s award is going to legendary surfer and shaper Skip Frye. Admission to the Silver Surfer Award ceremony on Sunday is free to the public and all are welcome. Entry fees to some events are $15 (depending on the event).
