Antique Gas & Steam Engine Museum The Antique Gas & Steam Engine Museum is a 55- acre facility located in North San Diego County’s Guajome Regional Park in Vista. Open since 1976 the Museum’s collection focuses on the time period of 1849-1960 and includes a working Blacksmith Shop, Weaver’s Building, N Scale Model Railroad, small and large stationary Gas & Steam Engines, and Farm & Construction equipment, among other Americana relics. Open 7-days a week (excluding Christmas and New Years Day) the Museum is home to several exciting events per year.

The Vista Gem & Mineral Show October 11–12

The Museum’s Weavers Fiber Arts Fiesta and The Palomar Chapter 136 National Association of Watch and Clock Collectors (NAWCC) Mini Mart. The Vista Gem & Mineral Show and the Museum’s Fiber Arts Fiesta has teamed up to produce a great event for all to enjoy and this year the Palomar Chapter 136 of the NAWCC has joined. The Gem Show features exhibits, demonstrations, and items for sale from raw rocks to finished fine jewelry. The Fiber Arts Fiesta will be held at the Museum’s Stage area and inside the Museum Weaver Building and features over 40 vendors selling yarn, clothing, rugs and more.

The Fall Antique Engine and Tractor Show October 18 – 19, 25–26

For 38 years the Museum’s biannual Antique Engine and Tractor Shows have brought back a time of farming to our growing community. During this special event the Museum comes alive when the equipment comes out of the barn to demonstrate life at the turn of the 19th century. Visitors have the rare opportunity to see wheat threshed, and corn and flour ground at the Grist Mill, and women baking over a wood burning stove inside the Farmhouse. The event runs from 9am–4:30pm. Admission is $10 for Adults, $9 for Seniors and $7 for Children 6-12.

California Center For The Arts Museum, Escondido Explore the rich history of Mexico and celebrate Día de los Muertos at the Center’s museum exhibition, Colores de la Muerte, from October 3 to November 9. The Museum is proudly participating with “Kid’s Free” admission during the month of October. Amble through Mexico’s storied past with Tren de la Historia, a series of train car sculptures that recount the turning points of the Mexican Revolution along with 36 mixed media sculptures from the Mingei International Museum and an altar installation honoring the Mexican author, Octavio Paz. Mexico’s antiquity from early days of revolution to modern day

independence will be chronicled with insights into the role of women, political life and Mexico’s perilous fight for independence.

In addition, the Student Gallery Wall will showcase the artwork of middle and high school students from Escondido and Valley Center school districts. Students were asked to submit their artistic interpretation of their choice of a short piece of literature by either Mexican writer Octavio Paz or Colombian writer Gabriel García Márquez.

This exhibition is presented in collaboration with the Mingei International Museum, The University of Tijuana CUT, Centro Cultural de Tijuana (CECUT), Instituto

Municipal de Arte y Cultura (IMAC), the Consul General of Mexico in San Diego, Museum of Popular Art in Mexico City and Consejo Nacional para la Cultura y las Artes (CONACULTA).

The Museum at the California Center for the Arts, Escondido is an inviting 9,000-square-foot exhibition space that boasts three galleries, a sculpture court, and a museum store. City of Carlsbad – William D. Cannon Art Gallery The William D. Cannon Art Gallery (CAG), operated by the City of Carlsbad Cultural Arts Office, is a focal point for stimulating visual arts encounters in Carlsbad and North County. Located in the Carlsbad City Library complex in south Carlsbad, the CAG presents five exhibitions per year. These free exhibitions and the CAG’s related school outreach programs, hands-on family art-making days, lectures, special events and publications are all designed to engage and enrich the individual and the community and to make the visual arts an accessible and integral part of peoples’ lives.

The Gallery sets a standard that visitors can trust, with a special focus on artists from southern California. San Dieguito Art Guild’s Holiday Bazaar and Off Track Art Gallery November 15, from 10am to 4pm, the San San Dieguito Ar t Guild, Est. 1965 Dieguito Art Guild presents its Fourth Annual Holiday Bazaar at the Encinitas Community Center. The San Dieguito Art Guild, an over200-member all-volunteer non-profit organization that operates the Off Track Gallery located in the Lumberyard Shopping Center in Encinitas, serves the community by frequently offering art workshops, classes and demonstrations by outstanding professional artists.

“The Holiday Bazaar gives local artists a venue to offer their hand-made items to the public. Guild President and fused glass artist Carol Korfin says, “Even if you have been to our Holiday Bazaar in the past, there are new artists and new items to see. We try to have a balanced mix of media, so you will find photographers, watercolorists, oil or acrylic painters, as well as multi-

The Off Track Gallery showcases the work of more than 100 artists in a range of media.

At the San Diego Archaeological Center, you can discover the region’s past through interactive exhibits, K-12, and adult educational programs and field trips. The Center preserves archaeological collections and promotes their educational, scientific and cultural use to benefit a diverse public. Archaeology is critical to understanding, protecting, and celebrating our rich and diverse cultural heritage. Ultimately, we are searching for ways

to better predict how cultures will change, including our own, and how to better plan for the future. The field of archaeology enhances learning at any age level because of its multidisciplinary nature. November 15, The Battle of San Pasqual Lecture—Local historian Richard Carrico will reveal his recent research on the famous battle between California and American forces that took place in the valley on December 6, 1846.

City of Encinitas Arts – Civic Center Gallery, Encinitas Library Gallery, Encinitas Community Center Gallery The City of Encinitas and its Arts Division recognizes that arts and culture are essential elements in the character and quality of life in a vibrant community. The City’s commitment to the arts is evident by the many opportunities for citizens, visitors, artists and organizations to share in cultural expression through the arts. Collectively, these efforts result in a broad range of artistic opportunities for the community.

The City’s first gallery was established in 1998. Today, the Civic Arts Program offers exhibition space to local visual artists to display their work at three venues: City Hall, the Encinitas Library, and the Encinitas Community and Senior Center (with two-dimensional and three-dimensional exhibitions at each site). This year, the city will mount 43 exhibits which is a record number for the program. Most of the artwork is for sale.

100-Acre Bates Nut Farm’s Giant Pumpkin Field and Festivals We’re giving away family four-pack packages! October 1–31 Bates Nut Farm, located in Valley Center, is comprised of a 100-acre ranch, a Farm Zoo, and retail stores filled with all sorts of items, from delicious nuts and dried goodies to kitchen items. Their Zoo is open daily from 9am-5pm and features animals such as llamas, turkeys, emus, and peacocks. Patches of shady trees give the perfect respite from a hot day and are a great place to picnic underneath. Many families bring games for the kids to play. In addition, weekends at Bates include live entertainment from 12-3, BBQ, kettle corn, food trucks, rock climb, bounce, slide and other family friendly events.

Pancake Breakfast/ “Pumpkin Festival” Arts ‘n Crafts Fair, October 4-5, Saturday-Sunday, 9am-5pm Over 80 artisans are selling a variety of handmade crafts and fine art at the annual “Pumpkin Festival” Arts ‘n Crafts Fair. Scarecrow Contest, October 11, Saturday, 9am-1pm Keep the lost art of scarecrow making alive and make

a scarecrow to enter in the 22nd Annual Bates Nut Farm Scarecrow Contest. Your scarecrow will be on display in the Pumpkin Patch for the entire season. Individuals, groups and clubs are invited to enter; each entry will receive a free pumpkin and gift certificate. Entries are due by 10am Saturday, October 11.

Costume Contest, October 18, Saturday, 9am-1pm You and your family have worked hard on your Halloween costumes…here’s your opportunity to show them off! Participants in the Bates Costume Contest get a certificate of participation, Halloween treats and a tractor hayride ticket. 6th Annual La Jolla Art & Wine Festival October 11-12, Saturday-Sunday The 2014 La Jolla Art & Wine Festival returns to La Jolla for its sixth annual season on October 11 and 12 in the heart of the village, on lower Girard Ave. This two-day juried art show and fundraiser has quickly garnered a reputation as one of the most prestigious art and wine festivals on the west coast and is expected to draw in the largest crowd to date. A Taste of Home at the Wedge in Escondido October 25, Saturday, 1pm-5pm The Escondido Downtown Business Association presents The Wedge, a uniting of local food, beer and wine growers, situated on Grand Avenue where the public can gather for an afternoon to enjoy a taste of the local restaurants, bars and wineries. The tasting stops will consist of the area’s local downtown businesses hosting fine cheeses and a diverse selection of craft beers and boutique wines as well as local restaurants that will be offering samples of their best-known creations.

Oktoberfest and Beers of Autumn By Bob Grueneberg The beginning of autumn means we have moved from the lighter, thirst quenching beers of summer to those that will tend to be darker and sweeter with toasted malt flavor. It also means Oktoberfest beer is here!

Oktoberfest beers are cold fermented lagers meaning that they are malty, smooth, less hoppy than ales and best drunk by the liter, if you’re so inclined. The Oktoberfest tradition started with Prince Ludwig’s marriage in Munich, Germany in 1810 where the whole village was invited. The wedding

took place in front of the city gates in Theresienwiese (“Theresa’s fields). This famous Oktoberfest location is now referred to simply as “Wies’n.

These days, Oktoberfest starts in September and runs through the first week of October. So why isn’t it called Septemberfest? The original date was October 12, 1810 but it was moved earlier in the year to provide for better weather. It runs for 16 days and this year marks the 181st Oktoberfest.

finish. They do this by “dry hopping” the beer. This means the hops are not boiled to extract the bitterness, but rather steep in the fermenting beer at room temperature. This process tends to extract hop aroma rather than bitterness.

Autumn beers tend to be maltier too, so that provides a nice balance.

Don’t forget the numerous pumpkin beers that will arrive in time for Halloween. Beers that you may want to sample include Spaten Oktoberfest, Hofbrau Oktoberfest, and the Sierra Nevada series of harvest ales. This is one of those places that you just need to know about. Café Panini is one of the coolest hangouts in Carlsbad Village. None of their eclectic décor matches but seems to make sense. It has the look and feel of Hussong’s Cantina in Ensenada, Mexico, but with much more comfortable seating, sofas, a beautiful water fountain, outdoor fire pits, umbrellas, wifi, and beautiful ornate black iron fencing. Their outdoor patio is kid and dog friendly.

The Broken Yolk is open 365 days a year from 6am to 3pm and is one of the most popular breakfast and lunch restaurants in San Diego. 13th Annual Oceanside Music Festival October 11-12, 19, 26 October is “National Art and Humanities Month,” and the Oceanside Cultural Arts Foundation and OMFest Committee feel that it would best be celebrated with music.

Together, they present the 13th annual Oceanside Music Festival, OMFest, which offers concerts this year with a variety of music genres, showcasing both student and professional musicians from throughout Southern California.

OMFest series opens with a “Bond, Just Bond” Reception and OCAF Scholarship Gala, 6pm to 8:30pm on Saturday, October 11 at Oceanside Museum of Art. The theme this year is based on the beloved characters from the “007” movies. Attendees are treated to a Casino Royale Cocktail Hour with an assortment of gourmet foods and wines from local establishments, as well as lots of music. Guests are encouraged to dress as their favorite Bond or Bond Girl, and prizes are being presented for the best and most creative costumes. During the evening, the OCAF Honoree Mr. Mark Phelps, the long-time director of instrumental music at Oceanside High, is introduced and presented with an award.

The “Global Spirit” concert follows 2pm to 4pm, Sunday, October 12 at St Mary Star of the Sea Church. This musical event offers liturgical dancers, and choral groups.

The Fest will continue the following week with “Give Me That Old Time Religion” concert from 2pm to 4pm, Sunday, October 19 at the historic 1st Christian Church. Through The Storm Gospel Chorus and Calvary Christian Youth Chorus are being featured with a special opening act.

Happy Birthday Belly Up Tavern!–Forty Years and Still Going Strong!

The 40th anniversary of the Belly Up Tavern marks the vision conceived by Dave Hodges and Greg Gilholm, two lifelong friends who dreamed of bestowing their small community of Solana Beach with a local watering hole where people throughout San Diego could enjoy a refreshing drink. Evolving over time into the popular live music venue San Diegans know and love today, the Belly Up is an intrinsic part of Southern California’s music scene that locally- and nationally-renowned musicians praise for its premium acoustics and welcoming atmosphere.

Music did not play a role in Belly Up’s early history, but it wasn’t long before the bar’s billiards and pinball appendages were traded for a low-rise stage. Local bluegrass bands were among the first to grace Belly Up’s new stage, but after a few years the club took a turn toward the blues, attracting famed artists like Bo Diddley, Big Mama Thornton, Etta

James, John Lee Hooker, and many others throughout the 1980s. The 1990s saw the Belly Up through a noticeable genre expansion as reggae, hip hop, rock and pop acts gravitated toward the eclectic venue that managed to fit all tastes.

Identified by Rolling Stone Magazine as, “one of the hottest live music clubs on the West Coast,” Belly Up consistently earns the San Diego Music Awards’ “Best Live Music Venue” title. Nationally acclaimed bands have played the club when they were fledglings including The Red Hot Chili Peppers, The Black Eyed Peas, No Doubt, Jack Johnson, and John Mayer–while other famous acts have come to the club to do something fun and more intimate than their usual larger venue performances – artists like Jimmy Buffett, Green Day, Death Cab for Cutie, Joe Walsh, and Foster The People. Almost every major national artist based in San Diego has played the club more than once, artists like Jason Mraz, J.J. Cale, Switchfoot, Blink 182, POD, and even Burt Bacharach while a pantheon of legends have

traveled through the club including Willie Nelson, BB King, Tom Jones, The Neville Brothers, and Curtis Mayfield. And, of course, waves and waves of great bands keep coming through the club, acts like Damian Marley, Alt J, Thievery Corporation, and Snoop Dogg, as well as locally based artists that tour nationally, like Slightly Stoopid, Karl Denson’s Tiny Universe, Steve Poltz, and Tristan Prettyman.

Jokingly named for the club’s potential to go “belly up,” Belly Up Tavern is now an enduring institution that has gained momentum with each new era. San Marcos Unified School District – Alleviating Impacted Schools But Putting More Children’s Lives at Risk

By Andy Lee I am greatly concerned about safety issues related to the San Marcos Unified School District’s new K-8 school that’s being built, and I feel obligated to speak out to try and save lives of San Marcos children. I have never spoken out against any development in my life; in fact, I am in favor of building schools and schools near my home. I purchased my current home in San Marcos near Cal State San Marcos (CSUSM), at the bottom of a large hill, over which San Elijo Road/S. Twin Oaks Valley Road passes, because I believe owning a home near a school is a plus.

I was in favor of the previously proposed K-8 Hansen school site located at the bottom of the hill, closer to CSUSM and my home. My understanding is that site was abandoned by San Marcos Unified School District (SMUSD) because of uncomfortable radon levels found.

Because the Hansen site was deemed unreliable, and the schools in San Marcos are already impacted, SMUSD is rushing to build a school as fast as they can.

I understand that the San Marcos schools in my neighborhood and surrounding area are greatly impacted and that students deserve to study in an environment in which they do not feel forgotten amongst their 30-40 classmates.

However, other than the obvious, alleviating the overcrowding of classrooms, there is nothing good about the new K-8 location on San Elijo Road/S. Twin Oaks Valley Road. Quite the contrary, the decision to build a school at this site, a 36-acre parcel near San Elijo Elementary School and San Elijo Middle School, is irresponsible, unconscionable and dangerous. This particular site is far from ideal because (a) traffic is already impacted; (b) it is in the middle of a high wildfire severity zone; and (c) is tangent to a posted 50 mph sloped and curved speed zone.

This school is being built in an area where ten years ago, there were no homes or schools. The Environmental Impact Report, or EIR, which every new school site requires for environmental issues, public safety, and traffic safety was rushed through within six months. Six months is too fast of a time frame to get residents informed and to do a proper study for a new school site. My neighbors and I live only one mile from the site and never received any notification! It is also my understanding that there was only one public joint workshop that took place at San Elijo Middle School with the City and the School District on September 25, 2013. The “School Coming Soon” sign that is currently posted, is pointing away from oncoming traffic, and is partially hidden behind a fence. It’s very difficult to know what is being built there. The location is a high-risk fire hazard area and has a history of fires, including the Elfin/ Harmony Grove Fire, and most recently, the Cocos Fire.

First of all, traffic is a huge issue. The two-lane highway for ingress and egress to the K-8 school is already greatly impacted, especially during the daily morning school rush to get kids into class and in the early afternoon when all the students are picked up. As it is now, the drop-off and pickup traffic for the current elementary and middle schools’ effectively stop the flow of traffic. The road cannot currently handle the amount of the traffic that passes through each day. The proposed new school would further impact the traffic situation by an approved 1,500 additional students. The hill is too long and too steep (one mile and a 10% grade) for parents to walk their kids to school, mean-

ing virtually most the students will have to be driven there.

Instead of one large traffic jam on San Elijo Road, there will be two stopping points, which will make it even harder to get anywhere in a time-efficient manner. Any driver in a hurry would be out of luck.

The City of San Marcos tried to apply zoning rules to SMUSD in regards to its City Master Plan, but the City of San Marcos doesn’t have jurisdiction over the San Marcos School District and the SMUSD Governing Board overruled and won (resolution #12-13/14). The SMUSD rendered the City of San Marcos’ zoning ordinance inapplicable to the project! With a new K-8 at this new location, there will be five schools, including CSUSM, in a threemile radius. In ten years from now, CSUSM will be built out to accommodate 20,000 students, which is double the 10,000 current attendees. If there is ever any kind of disaster, such as another fire (and there seems to be a pattern of fires in this vicinity every few years), there is no way a two-lane highway would be able to handle approximately 23,000 students, plus residents and businesses.

Secondly, the school is being built in a well-known speed zone. The posted traffic speed at the K-8 site is currently 50 mph. It is also a one-mile long stretch, 10 percent downhill grade, and on a curve. Due to the speed and curve, visibility is poor and drivers will not be able to see students as well as they would in a slower school zone.

How will cars be able to quickly change from 50 mph to 25 mph on a downhill slope? The sheriff is already notorious for using radar to hand out speeding tickets in the area; this indicates that people already have difficulty keeping their speed “under” 50 mph. Regardless if the posted speed is 25, drivers will most likely have a tendency to speed and therefore endanger school children.

Lastly, I was home at 3:45 during the breaking out of the Cocos Fire in May and had to quickly evacuate; I had only about five minutes’ notice to get out. Luckily, this was not during school hours. My home is about 1 mile from the new K-8 site. After I got through the front gate in my community, cars were stopped. It was a complete traffic jam and people were desperately honking their horns and yelling at each other to move, but no one could budge. The fire was on both sides of the two-lane highway and I seriously considered abandoning my car to make a run for it. I can’t imagine the chaos that would surely ensue during school hours if everyone–residents, parents, and thousands of students–were trying to evacuate themselves and their children on San Elijo Road and S. Twin Oaks Road.

Due to already impacted traffic, the issue of decreasing the speed limit, and extreme fire hazard, something must be done about this school. Schools in San Marcos may be impacted now, but attendance in the existing schools may decrease next year. The new K-8 school presents a great safety hazard for its students and the nearby community.

Therefore, if this school gets built, there must be a proper evacuation plan along with it. No matter what improvements, if any, can be accomplished at this time, this is a disaster of the greatest magnitude waiting to happen. Just because the schools are heavily impacted is no reason to put thousands of more lives in danger. It’s not worth it.

The biggest kids’ Halloween celebration in San Diego, Brick-or-Treat and Brick-orTreat Party Nights, is about to get bigger at Legoland California Resort. The family theme park is adding two Friday nights (October 17 and 24) to its Halloween festivities. Now six nights in October, Brick-or-Treat Party Nights features a variety of family activities including the ghost Cruise Scavenger Hunt, Brick-or-Treat Trail, and a new bonus treat station and dance party at Sea Life Aquarium. Home Sellers Advisory This advisory to home sellers is provided as a courtesy

by David Boe, owner/broker of Boe Real Estate, sharing 30 years of local broker experience from selling over 1,000 homes: Advisory #1: Beware of the “High Price” listing presentation. These agents have one goal and that is to get a signed listing contract by pitching an unrealistic high list price. I have a unique response for sellers to give these agents and a marketing strategy for this situation.

Advisory #2: Beware of the “Universal Phone Call” that goes something like this; “Hello, I have a buyer interested in buying your home, are you interested in selling?” Truth is very few of these solicitation calls have a specific buyer.

If you answer yes to their question, ask them to put their buyer’s name on a “single party” listing agreement, so your obligation is only if that specific buyer buys your home.

Advisory #3: Beware of the “Great Promise.” These agents convincingly tell you that they list and sell most of their own listings, with no other agent involved…..and they will lower the total listing commission from 5 or 6% to 3% when they sell your home themselves. The truth is; very few agents sell their own listings! So, they get a 5 or 6% list-

ing contract by promising lower commissions that rarely occur. I have a simple solution for this too, that sellers can request from these crafty agents.

Advisory #4: Beware of agents that will “Match” another agent’s total commission. I have listed homes at 1.5% to me for 30 years with 2.5% to buyer’s broker for a 4.0% total commission. Some agents say they will match my 4%, but they only offer 2.0% in the MLS to the buyer’s broker and they keep 2% for themselves. “Is that in the best interest of the seller that they are representing, or themselves”? While commissions are negotiable, most buyer agents expect a 2.5% minimum commission. Have the agent disclose in the listing agreement that only 2% is going to buyer’s broker in MLS. Then, have the agent print out the listings in your area to show you how many other listings offer 2% to buyer’s broker. Commissions to buyer’s broker are clearly stated in the MLS. Bodysurfing Exhibit at the California Surf Museum Through January 2015 The California Surf Museum, which serves as an international repository and resource center for the lifestyle sport of surfing, proudly presents “Bodysurfing: Pure, Simple… and Fun.” The exhibit opened this past July and will run through January of 2015.

The Encinitas Holiday Parade marches back into town on Saturday, December 6. Thousands of people will be on floats and in bands with tens of thousands more spectators cheering them on as the Parade rolls along Coast Highway 101. The parade begins at 5:30pm and is preceded by a 5pm tree lighting ceremony at the Lumberyard (near Starbucks coffee).

Parade entries, which include floats, marching bands and children’s groups, will travel south along South Coast Highway 101 beginning at the corner of “D” Street and finishing at “J” Street. Big Horse Harvest Festival’s 12-Acre Largest Corn Maze in Southern California!

October 4 – 31 The Big Horse Corn Maze and Harvest Festival takes place in Temecula at Big Horse Feed from October 4 to October 31. You’ll be a“maze”d as you get lost in the largest corn maze in Southern California. The design of the 12-acre corn maze this year honors the 75th Anniversary of Little League. The Corona family-owned business’ annual Corn Maze and Harvest Festival has been a fixture on the Southern California calendar for 16 years, always delivering a mix of fun and fundraising for many good causes. Little League baseball and the military have been constant beneficiaries over the years, and several other charitable organizations have also been featured. The elaborate corn maze, which takes about an hour to navigate, and the festival runs throughout October, with the A-Maze-Ing Race slated for Saturday, October 11. The A-Maze-Ing Race starts with a 5K run, then challenges the runners to make it through a

maze, and finishes with the Ice Bucket Challenge. The weekend also salutes the military.

The third weekend is themed “Take Me Out to the Ballgame.” In addition to encouraging kids to sign up for Little League baseball, there is a tie-in with the 75th anniversary of the “I’m the luckiest man on the face of the earth” speech made by Lou Gehrig upon his retirement from the sport in 1939.

The “Iron Horse” Yankee baseball star died of ALS, at 38, just two years after that speech.

The fourth and final weekend of October is “Old Fashioned Farm Day.” Potato sack races, pig races and all kinds of farm and family related fun takes place throughout the weekend.

San Diego 18th Annual Susan G. Komen 3-Day Walk for the Cure November 21–23 The Susan G. Komen 3-Day Walk for the Cure is a 60-mile walk for women and men who want to make a personal difference. Gearing up for this annual and historical event, participants commit to raising at least $2,300 each and spend several months training to prepare for it. They devote their entire three-day weekend to the cause. Each year, there are thousands of walkers in San Diego whose combined efforts raise tens of millions of dollars for the fight against breast cancer. Also, about $240,000 stays in San Diego County to help fund local programs.

Participants walk 15-22 miles a day during the event. They are provided meals, snacks, drinks, shower facilities, tents,

safety guidelines, and 24-hour medical support. A crew of volunteers spends the entire three days with the walkers and staff to make this event possible. Carlsbad High School’s 14th Annual Golf Tournament October 20, Monday Carlsbad High School’s Dance Team Boosters are hosting their 14th annual golf tournament to raise the funds needed to send the Varsity Lancer Dancer team, to the Universal Dance Association’s (UDA) National Championships in Orlando, Florida.

This year’s tournament is taking place Monday, October 20 at El Camino Country Club in Oceanside and includes the popular “Chopper Ball Drop” raffle event. Prior to teeoff, 1,000 golf balls are being dropped from a helicopter to a temporary golf hole. Each numbered golf ball is like a raffle ticket, carrying a chance to win $2,500. The first golf ball that goes into the hole or ends up closest to the hole wins the cash!

For the past several years, the golf tournament has generated the funds needed to send the Lancer Dancers to Orlando, Florida, to compete in the UDA National Championships.

The afternoon will feature an “Old Hollywood Fashion Contest,” with awards being given for Best Dressed Couple, Best Old Hollywood and Best Celebrity Lookalike.

The added season pays tribute to the glamour and excitement of 1930s when Hollywood icon Bing Crosby founded the track with some of his celebrity pals. The Bing Crosby Season will run a total of 15 racing days – primarily Thursday through Sunday – with an earlier daily post time of 12 p.m. on weekends and 12:30 p.m. on weekdays. Bike the Coast — Taste the Coast — Begins and Finishes at Oceanside Pier November 1, Saturday, 6am-5pm On Saturday, No­ vem­ ber 1, the fifth annual Bike the Coast—Taste the Coast, presented by TriCity Medi­cal Center, starts with a bicycle ride where riders of all ages and abilities can choose from 7, 15, 25, 50, and 100-mile rides.

Cycling routes start and finish on the beach at the Oceanside Pier where all can enjoy the Taste the Coast festival. The festival includes

local ‘street vendor’ cuisine, an expanded charity beer garden, and a sports/fitness expo. The cycling courses include the San Luis Rey Bike Trail and San Diego’s North County beaches of Oceanside, Carlsbad, Encinitas, Solana Beach and Del Mar. All routes finish back at the Oceanside Pier, where the “Taste the Coast” portion of the event takes place and features food booths, a beer garden and fun activities for the family.

Pacific Marine Credit Union O’side Turkey Trot–Move Your Feet Before You Eat November 27, Thursday, 7am More than 10,000 runners and walkers of all ages are expected to “move their feet before they eat” at the 9th Annual Pacific Marine Credit Union O’side Turkey Trot and kids’ run set for Thanksgiving Day, November 27 in Oceanside. Featuring scenic tours of this classic California beach community, the 5-Mile and 5K runs kicks off at 7am and 8:20am respectively, starting on historic Highway 101 at the Civic Center (located at 330 N. Coast Highway) and finishing on The Strand just south of the iconic Oceanside Pier. A 5K walk begins at 8:45am. All races feature live entertainment along the courses.

The family-oriented event also includes one- to one-fourth-mile kids’ runs starting at 10:30am, an expo and a costume contest. “The primary objective of the Turkey Trot is to get families outside and active together on a day that people routinely stay in,” said Kathy Kinane, race director

and president of Kinane Events. “The morning run and walk have quickly become an annual holiday tradition for many families.”

Entrants can designate part of their entry fees to support local schools and non-profits. The race also directly benefits the Move Your Feet Before You Eat Foundation, a charity founded by Kinane Events to promote physical activity among youth.
