It’s Game On! at the 2013 San Diego County Fair The Latest Scoop on the Newest Food, Entertainment and Fun Win Free Tickets!

The San Diego County Fair is the largest annual event in San Diego County and the fourth largest fair in North America, and last year attracted over 1.5 million visitors. The North County Sun, along with the San Diego County Fair are excited to give you a preview of the 2013 Fair in this edition!

“Game on!” is the theme for the 2013 San Diego County Fair and 2013 promises to be filled with fun and games galore for 24 days. This year the Fair will spotlight classic and nostalgic games (of all types) that we grew up with, and will highlight how games have evolved over the years.

From board games and pinball, to television, videos and computers, technology has enhanced the gaming culture beyond our wildest dreams.

The San Diego County Fair has something for everyone!

In this special 2013 San Diego County Fair preview edition you’ll find out about a lot of new Fair fun and excitement, including: Concert Lineup on the Grand Stand Stage; Chicken Charlie’s deep fried culinary claim to fame and a sneak preview of some of his newest creations; My Big Time Wedding event in the Paul Ecke Jr. Flower and Garden area; Big Bite Bacon Festival; Newest Contests; 4-H Auction and Animals; Newest Themed Exhibits including the Main Exhibit about the history and popularity of games; and special Fair days and great ways to save money!

The San Diego County Fair has been a fixture on the Del Mar Fairgrounds since 1936. In the early days of the Fair, the event was held in various places, such as Escondido, Oceanside and Balboa Park in San Diego. The Fair found

a permanent home in Del Mar in January of 1936, as the Works Progress Administration awarded San Diego County a half million dollar grant to build the Fairgrounds on what was the old Del Mar Golf Course. Constriction commenced, and the first County Fair in Del Mar opened on October 8, 1936.

The Fair will be open Saturday, June 8 and run through Thursday, July 4. The Fair will be closed (on the first three Mondays) and will have more than 100 food vendors serving everything from deep-fried Oreos to a more healthy type of barbeque, Italian, Australian, Chinese and other cuisines, and will once again have a Wine Festival and a Beer Festival and competition. There are some quieter places but no less interesting, including the outdoor Paul Ecke Flower Garden that has themed hardscapes and softcsape landscaping and floral creations. There are also indoor flower shows, competitions, and exhibits. Other great features of the Fair include a plethora of crazy rides; farm animals exhibits; pony rides; elephant rides; carnival games, petting zoo; kid’s ride area; photo and painting competitions; collections of all types; student year books; rocks, gems and fossils; singing, dancing, acting, and cooking competitions; theatrical acts; local music acts on various stages; as well as Monster Truck; Fire Department Demonstrations; Turkey Stampede; Piggy Races; dog tricks; comedy and magic; headliner acts on the Grandstand Stage; the Paddock Concert Series; the Gospel Festival; Solid Gold Series; 4-H auctions; and Del Mar Arena events,

The sixth annual San Elijo Hills Country Fair on Saturday, April 13, will be an extravaganza of sights, tastes, sounds and experiences for the whole family. The fair runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at San Elijo Elementary School, 1615 Schoolhouse Way, San Marcos.

“The Country Fair has become a much anticipated event in the San Elijo Hills Community. Each year, this event helps bring the community together by building friendships and creating family memories while raising money for the children to have much needed educational programs,” said Monee Gardner, co-vice president of the Country Fair.

The festive event, which is organized by a team of community volunteers, will feature live international performances by local artists throughout the day, a petting zoo, a train that travels through fabled “Route 66,” inflatable slides and games, carnival rides, traditional fair food and treats, international food truck fare and more than 20 midway games.

Additional highlights include a Prize Walk offering oversized pillow chums, arts and crafts for the kids and a silent auction with hundreds of items. The 12th Annual Gator by the Bay Festival, May 10 to 12, brings the joie de vivre of the Louisiana bayou to San Diego on Mother’s Day weekend, with 10,000 pounds of crawfish and some of the hottest blues, Cajun, and zydeco music around. Big Bite Bacon Fest is the first and only bacon event of its kind across the nation offering cash prizes and awards for participants in a sanctioned food competition that’s all about BACON! Bacon competitors will prepare and serve small plates of bacon-y deliciousness that will range from appetizers to

desserts and everything in between. Guests will be able to quench their thirsts with refreshing bacon-inspired cocktails and brews.

Competitors may select from two competition dates. The first contest date will be held at the Del Mar Fairgrounds Saturday April 13, as a prelude to the Big Bite Bacon Fest on June 16. Entry fees are $39; the contest is licensed by the Kansas City Barbecue Society, and the First Place winner will receive $1,000 in cash prizes plus a highly coveted invitation & travel stipend to compete at the World Food Championships in Las Vegas, Nevada, in November.

Second and third place winners will take home $600 and $300 respectively. Contest two will take place at the Big Bite Bacon Fest on Sunday, June 16. Competitors of the second contest must be able to cook large portions of their bacon-y creations for sampling to a crowd of hungry bacon lovers!

Entries can be any fully prepared dish (this is not a “recipe contest” but rather a live food judging event) that contains bacon in the list of ingredients. Entries will be submitted to a panel of up to 100 trained food judges to be tasted and evaluated for flavor, appearance, and creativity. 4th Annual Taste of Cardiff May 16, Thursday, 5pm-8pm Immerse yourself in the flourishing culinary vibe of Cardiff-by-the-Sea at the 4th Annual Taste of Cardiff event on Thursday, May 16, from 5-8pm. San Diego County Fair’s 7th Annual International Beer Competition and Festival June 21–23 The Seventh Annual San Diego International Beer Festival takes place during the weekend of June 21 to 23, from Friday through Sunday. In just seven short years, the San Diego International Beer Festival has become one of the largest in the country, with more than 150 breweries and 350 beers from around the world. In 2010, 15 states and 22 countries participated in the festival. In 2011, Pizza Port of Solana Beach won Best of Show for its Poor Man’s IPA Beer entered in the Specialty Beer Class. That was the third year in a row that Pizza Port took top honors!

The San Diego International Beer Competition is open to licensed microbreweries to compete with their specialty beers. Home brewers will have a separate contest, which is a one-day BJCP/AHA-sanctioned competition for Homemade Beer, Mead, Cider and Perry. New this year will be a crowning of a Champion Brewery in addition to the Best of Show Beer.

The Champion Brewery will be awarded based on points earned for beers entered in the judging. Microbreweries and home brewers are urged to enter. Both professional and home brewers can go to www.sdfair.com/beer to enter.

Homebrew Competition Once again there will a Homebrew Beer Competition.

The 2nd Annual San Diego County Fair Wine Festival will be held on Saturday, June 15, in the Paul Ecke Jr. Flower and Garden Show. This festival will feature the top performing wines from the 2013 San Diego County Fair Wine Competition. After a successful first year, the competition has been expanded to accept entries from all over the State of California.

Wines entered must be available for retail sale through wineries bonded in the State of California with grapes grown within State of California boundaries. Wineries with top performing wines will be invited to participate in the San Diego County Fair Wine Festival, a ticketed tasting event. This year the Wine Festival Competition will be awarding gold, silver, and bronze medals along with a Double Gold Award, which is reserved for the finest wines as agreed on unanimously by an assigned 3-judge panel. A line formed for several hours as excited diners waited to build-their-own meal and check out their favorite local Souplantation with brand new updates. The first lucky 100 guests received Souplantation reusable bags filled with fun gifts. Guests enjoyed live music, cooking demonstrations, and a sampling of the new menu was distributed. 10% of the proceeds from the event were donated to the Boys and Girls Club of San Dieguito.

The original menu still remains, but with new additions and options. New menu items include cage-free and antibiotic-free chicken skewers, and Niman Ranch steak skewers hot off the grill for an upcharge. This allows guests to add healthy meat to their meal if they wish but it doesn’t force vegetarians to subsidize it. From Curly Garlic Fries to Deep-Fried Twinkies: What’s New on The Menu This Year Interview: San Diego County Fair’s Charlie Boghosian of Chicken Charlies Originally I’m from Syria. In the past many people never heard of Syria; but it’s big news these days, and most folks know about the Middle East, where Syria is located. I am a first generation American. I came to San Diego in 1980. We’re Roman Catholics.

I have four siblings and my father had a dream to raise us in a Christian country. We were a minority in Syria because it’s predominantly Muslim. When we came to America, it was hard and we tried to look for any kind of work and learn English and drink Coca Cola.

We were struggling financially and when I was 14 years old I convinced my dad to buy a little neighborhood produce store in downtown San Diego. It was called First Street Market and my dad and I ran it for 10 years. Although I was only 14, I worked there all the time. During the very first year I saw an ad for the Del Mar Fair. I asked my dad if I could work there for a couple of weeks in the summer and would consider it my vacation. I would do it for fun and I would bring the money back, because our family needed the extra money. We were kind of poor. The first person I asked for a job was Robert Jackson who owned the Charbroiled Potato Stand. I ended up working for him for twelve summers. During those summers, I finished high school and went on to San Diego State where I earned a Criminal Justice Degree. After that I went to Miramar College and got an AA Degree. I wanted to be a San Diego Police Officer. It was my dream and it was all I could think about.

After 12 years of traveling to many fairs such as the Orange County Fair and the California State Fair, I had

completed my education. One day, a woman at the Fresno Fair walked up to me and asked, “Do you want to buy my char-broiled chicken trailer?” Without any hesitation, I said, “Sure!” There went all my dreams of becoming a cop!

We decided to rename the trailer “Chicken Charlies.” As time went by, I developed a love for cooking, especially because my mom was very encouraging and helped me develop my cooking skills.

It took a few years to get into the San Diego County Fair (Del Mar Fair); but during that time I was able to get into the Orange County Fair, the Fresno Fair and the California State Fair. We had a 10-month route and did 18 fairs and festivals. I loved those fairs and had a deep appreciation for cooking. There’s nothing better in my life now than when people eat my food and I see the look on their faces...I don’t know how to describe it. It’s so fulfilling to know that you’re doing something that people really enjoy.

Although I didn’t invent them, in 1998 I started making garlic fries. It was a really big hit and you could smell the garlic from a mile away. The very next year I deep-fried cauliflower, eggplant, and zucchini. They’re my favorite vegetables and I learned how to fry them from my mother when I was a kid. One day I thought the chicken and our chicken tenders were too plain and we needed to flavor up the menu. On vacation, I had seen a lady deep frying a Twinkie. I bought one but didn’t like it. The batter was so thick and heavy, I couldn’t taste the Twinkie. When we immigrated to America, Twinkies were my all time favorite snack. My mom had different ways to deep fry various things. She taught me that delicate things, like cream-filled items or shrimp, need a thin crispy batter rather than a heavy wet batter. I bought a three pack of Twinkies for 59 cents, went home and mixed up an egg wash and some sweet flour. I rolled the Twinkies in the egg wash, and then the flour and fried it for a minute and a half. It was ten times better than the one I had bought from that lady. So I decided to add it to my menu in 2000 and it went crazy!

At the end of the season I had sold so many, I was asked to do several interviews. At the end of one interview, the reporter asked, “So Chicken Charlie, what are you going to do next year?” I began thinking about my next big thing.

That day my brother and I bought all kinds of stuff and started frying it all up. Before long, we had a big mess in the kitchen! We had a box of Oreo Cookies, used a really wet pancake type of batter, and drizzled a little chocolate syrup and a bit of powered sugar on top. I knew it was heavenly right away and that this was going to be huge. I introduced my deep-fried Oreos the following year, and I was right! It was huge. I don’t know how many we sold or how much money we made, but the compliments and the people who kept coming back for more….well, it was awesome.

When I moved here, finally, I instantly fell in love with avocados and the next year I introduced deep fried avocados. I deep fried quartered avocado wedges in a tempura, kind of a fish and chip batter, and squeezed some lemon on it and made my own fresco sauce to dip it in. Living in San Diego, you can image how big that was. Just a few years ago I deep-fried Kool-Aid. These are all thing I grew up loving as a kid. The deep-fried Kool-Aid got us on a lot of late night TV Shows and we were trending #1 all over the Internet. In 2006 our Krispy Krème Chicken Sandwich got us on the front page of the LA Times. The next year I invented the Zucchini Weenie and that got us on the Tonight Show with Conan O’Brian. The following year I invented the Deep Fried Klondike and that got me on the Chelsea Lately Show. Some of the other things that we’ve deep fried over the years include: cereal, peanut butter and jelly, brownies, BBQ ribs, Klondike Bars, Krispy Kreme sandwiches, chicken kabobs, beef kabobs, waffles, zucchini, avocados, fries, onion rings, frog legs, spam, pineapple, shrimp, Girl Scout Cookies, and Twinkies. The deep fried Oreo is my biggest success and was my first invention.

And here’s what’s new for this summer....Krispy Kreme Sloppy Joe. We’re going to put a new meaning to the word gourmet. This is amazing. It really is delicious. I take a Krispy Kreme jelly filled doughnut, slice it down the middle and scoop up a massive amount of traditional ground beef sloppy joe. It’s not spicy but has all the flavors of a good tomato based sloppy joe. It tastes like sweet and savory, sugar and salt. When I first took my first bite, my brain froze for a second. If my brain could talk it would have asked me, “What’s going on?” Then my brain just went teeeeheee in my head (like giggling). After about a minute I was able to refocus and see again and it was exhilarating.

Another new item to look for this summer is our Waffle Dog, which is like a corn dog, but not fried. It’s made in a special waffle iron that wraps the waffle around the dog.

It’s delicious. We are also introducing Deep Fried Cookie Dough. I’m sure it’s going to be a big winner!

During the San Diego County Fair we go through a couple thousand pounds of chicken in a day. Every single day we have our oil barrels picked up for re-cycling. We use fresh vegetable oil in our fryers every day. It’s important to know that we also offer a very healthy menu as well, including fresh vegetables, steak, chicken and shrimp and our very popular pineapple express menu. We have about 100 employees and we hire a lot of locals and a lot of kids and some of our people travel with us the whole summer.

Scholastic Surf Series Middle and High School Championships in Oceanside April 20-22 and May 4-5 The Scholastic Surf Series for middle and high school surf teams (SSS) provides a professionally managed and operated platform for school surf teams from San Diego to Santa Barbara. The Scholastic Surf Series provides teams with professional judging, quality events, and family oriented programs.

Surf Series competition areas are divided into three sections—San Diego, Orange County and LA to Santa Barbara.

School competitions are divided into nine individual contest divisions—San Diego High School Divions 1, 2, 3, 4, and middle schools; Orange County high school and middle schools, LA to Santa Barbara high school and middle school.

Each section consists of five events culminating with a State Championship contest for both middle school and high school teams. High school teams consist of six to nine shortboard men, three longboard men, two to three shortboard women, two to three longboard women and one coed bodyboarder.

Middle school teams will field nine shortboard boys, three longboard boys, two shortboard girls, two longboard girls and three coed bodyboarders.

Not that we have to follow them, but they do inspire us. This spring we pay homage to the 1960’s with playful bouffant styles that will inspire nostalgia with beach waves and bangin’ bangs.

The bouffant was thought to be ideal because it looked glamorous. It was very popular in the 60s as worn by first lady Jackie Kennedy. According to history, the bouffant originated from French Queen Marie Antoinette to mask her thin hair. The classic bouffant was associated with elegance and glamour. It was designed to accompany formal gowns or mini dresses and to call attention to a woman.

There is an increased demand for effortlessly wavy hair with a vintage look. Beach waves are a sexy hair style that works in both spring and summer. They refer to the waves at the beache…sizes of waves can vary from large, loose curls to a tighter curl for a more polished look. Achieving beach waves is simple. You can do it yourself by going to bed with wet hair that is gently combed; add a scrunch and sleep on it all night. Or you can go to a salon for a soft perm to create a wavy texture, especially if you have straight hair.

Finally, the demand for bangs, both soft and edgy is back. The right bangs will help show off your cheekbones, make your eyes pop, or help hide a high forehead. All bangs are not created the same; some extend to the lashes and others are swept to the side. Long bangs are great for thick straight hair that is worn short in the back. Ragged uneven bangs are popular among fashionistas wearing long, asymmetrical flat bangs with jagged edges.

9th Annual Gospel Festival at San Diego County Fair June 29, Saturday, All Day The 9th Annual Gospel Festival will feature a full schedule of uplifting gospel music on Saturday, beginning at 10:00 a.m., when the Fair opens, on June 29, including uplifting gospel groups and more than 30 gospel artists performing on the Fair’s various stages all day long, ending with a featured grandstand stage performance. The show is a part of the 2013 San Diego County Fair’s Toyota Summer Concert Series on the Heineken Grandstand Stage. This year, the highlight of the festival will be Grandstand Stage performances at 7:30 p.m. featuring nationally known gospel performers Mary Mary and Dottie Peoples.

Mary Mary is the American contemporary gospel duo consisting of sisters Erica Atkins-Campbell and Trecina “Tina” Atkins-Campbell. The two are often credited for being responsible for broadening the fan base of urban contemporary gospel in the 2000s by introducing elements of soul, hip hop, funk and jazz. Their hit song “Shackles (Praise You)” is considered to be one of the pioneering songs of urban contemporary gospel music. Their 2000 debut album Thankful went Platinum. Since then, they have had three Gold albums: Incredible (2002), Mary Mary (2005), and The Sound (2008), which all charted No. 1 on the Billboard Top Gospel Albums. In addition, Mary Mary has received four Grammys. In 2011, they released their fifth album Something Big with their hit single “Walking”.

Gospel singer, songwriter, and producer, Dottie Peoples, has been a star in the gospel music industry for more than 30 years and is considered a gospel music icon and pioneer. By Ernest Silva May 25 – September 15 Contemplative and expressive of the human condition, Ernest Silva’s body of work reflects his interest in using multiple-narratives to explore personal and universal images.

Recognized for his metaphoric imagery of deer, lighthouses, water, birds and figures, Silva presents an engaging conversation between his earlier and more recent work.

Silva derives his imagery from a variety of sources: family photographs of his childhood in Rhode Island, vintage story book covers from the 1950s, popular culture and art history. His imagery formed by memory, provides a panoply of symbols that combine to activate a strong emotional response. Interested in the intersection between painting, sculpture and installation, his exhibition reflects a combination of the three that transforms the gallery into a stage set with drawings and paintings on the walls and props on the floor. Silva encourages the viewer to become part of the painting and the story, losing the separation between artist, art and audience.

Ernest Silva moved to San Diego from Rhode Island in 1979 to accept a teaching position at the University of California San Diego where he is a Professor of Visual Art. Since then he has been an active force not only in the San Diego/Southern California art community, but also on a national and international level. His public art projects have included an installation at the Centro Cultural Tijuana, Tijuana, Mexico and he has a major long-term project called the Rain House at The New Children’s Museum of San Diego.

The Victorian Country Home, built in 1890, illustrates what life was like in 1900 with antique furnishing and a wonderful textile collection. North County Professional Cake Artist & Baker, Ro Zinniger’s Cupcake Recipe Book Gourmet Themed

By Andy Lee Striving for a bit of flavor variety in her baking endeavors throughout the last 15 years or so, Ro Zinniger began experimenting, developing and creating recipes. One ingredient led to another, along with many “fails” in her “tries,” leading to many documented recipes. She tried those recipes on her friends, family, and students, and they have become not only popular with students in her baking classes but with their friends too. “If the feedback I received was flavor related or texture related, I went back to the kitchen to revise the recipe,” said Zinniger, who just released her first recipe book, “Gourmet Cupcakes: From Scratch—Simple and Easy.”

“I was not really jumping on board with the trend, as much as I was trying to find a nice variety of flavors that could be incorporated into base recipes, which ultimately led to baking smaller quantities of batter resulting in better cupcake recipes than cake recipes,” Zinniger explained. The collection of recipes is compiled into a simple, 40-page black and white recipe book with Ro’s most popular recipes from her cake decorating and baking school, Ro Z’s Sweet Art Studio, where she instructs and offers classes in baking from scratch—cakes and cupcakes, cake decorating with icing and fondant, sugar art, and more. Her main motivation to publishing her book was due to her students wanting all of her recipes in a book to refer to when they were baking for their friends and family. A confessed “chocoholic,” Zinniger highly recommends the Brownie Cream Cheese cupcake, and as she says, “It is worth every calorie and gram of fat!”

You will find student favorites as well, including the Vanilla Bean Sour Cream gourmet cupcake recipe that can be made into a cake instead of cupcakes. Zinniger recommends that you begin with quality ingredients, especially vanilla bean paste for this recipe. She also recommends using cake flour instead of all-purpose flour, and to always know where your oven temperature is by hanging an oven thermometer on the center rack in your oven. 25th Annual Deep Pit BBQ May 18, 12–4pm The San Dieguito Heritage Museum will celebrate local history by hosting its annual Deep Pit BBQ at the Museum site. This year marks the 25th anniversary of the BBQ, and again this year, the meat will be cooked in the ground according to tradition. In days gone by, the San Dieguito area was planted with lima beans and after the lima bean harvest was finished, a celebration commenced that included a deep pit BBQ. The techniques for the BBQ were learned from descendants of Californios who families perfected cooking beef in the ground. There is no better way to eat BBQ. The BBQ starts at noon and food will be served until 2:30 p.m. During the event, the museum and exhibits will be open for visitors to browse through. There will be kid’s activities, a silent auction, and a bake sale. Several vehicles will be on display, including a 1957 Del Mar Fire Department fire engine, a stagecoach, a 1917 Model T Ford and other unique cars. There will be music provided

An anticipated 70,000 people are expected to descend upon downtown Fallbrook on Sunday, April 21, for the 27th annual Avocado Festival. 8th Annual Encinitas Sports Amgen Cycling Tour of California Begins in Escondido and Ends 750 miles Away in Santa Rosa Festival–Run, Bike, Swim, May 12-19 Paddle May 18-19 The 8th Annual Encinitas Sports Festival will take place during the weekend of May 18 and 19 at the Seaside Reef parking lot at the south end of Cardiff State Beach. Join thousands of your closest friends, family members and neighbors for two days of sports and fun in the beautiful coastal town of Encinitas. The City becomes a sports destination the weekend prior to Memorial Day and you really won’t want to miss it. Sporting events include a sprint and super-sprint triathlon; a mini-sprint with a beach run start duathlon; three bike tour distances of 103, 66, and 37 miles; a 5K and Family 1K walk/run; a 3 or 6 mile Paddle/SUP at Moonlight Beach; and a 1-mile open water swim.

5KM: The 5km will start and finish in the parking lot at Seaside Reef which is located at the south end of Cardiff State Beach. The course starts flat and fast going south on Coast Highway 101 and passing the 1-mile mark at the bridge overlooking Cardiff Reef. This is where you start a gradual climb to the turn-around just past the main entrance to the Cardiff State Beach Camp Grounds. Upon making the turn-around, your legs are ready for the downhill to carry you back to Cardiff Reef and the flat final mile to the finish line. There will be an aid station at turn-around that will provide water.

Paddle/SUP: The Encinitas Sports Festival’s Paddleboard & SUP race is a Southern California classic. Starting at the Seaside Parking lot, the race begins on the beach. If surf conditions permit, go a quarter mile west and then turn north for just under 1.5-miles. Paddlers will then return southbound to the finish for the 3-mile course or another loop for those taking on the 6-mile event.

Triathlon: The Encinitas Sprint Triathlon is considered by many to be the climax of the weekend. This event begins with a beach start, surf swim, and then a fast bike course, between Solana Beach in the south and Swami’s to the north, that features a stretch of Pacific Coast Highway on which the legends of this sport were born. The final run takes place on Pacific Coast Highway in Solana Beach and finishes back at Seaside. Finishers will be able to join thousands who came before including some of the giants of the sport like Chris McCormack, Michellie Jones, Paula Newby-Fraser and Scott Tinley.

Swim: Swimmers who thrive in open water will get an added bonus of a real beach start and waves at the Encinitas Sports Festival’s 1-mile Open Water Swim. Authentic surf swims aren’t easy to come by, but this race has become an instant classic. Whether you’re an age-group swimmer, a triathlete who can’t get enough of the opportunity to catch a wave in at the finish, or a fitness swimmer who loves swimming in the gorgeous Pacific, you won’t be disappointed.

Amgen Tour of California organizers have selected 16 teams from among the best international and domestic squads to compete in the country’s largest professional road cycling stage race May 12 to 19. With full rosters, the field includes Olympic medalists and Tour de France competitors.

The eight annual race will begin this year in Escondido (San Diego North County) on May 12, and will conclude on May 19 in Santa Rosa (in the San Francisco Bay Area).

Teams will cover a full range of challenging terrain as they speed through some of California’s most majestic and iconic highways, bridges, roadways and coastlines to claim stages in 12 official host cities.

The race will wind through some of California’s most demanding and scenic roads and serve as a preview of key contests, including the Tour de France. This year, worldwide fans will get a new perspective on a nearly 750-mile course.

World’s Fastest 5K Returns: Carlsbad 5000 Kid’s Race April 6, Adult 5K April 7 The Carlsbad 5000, voted “Best 5K of 2007” by Competitor Magazine, returns to the seaside village of Carlsbad. The race weekend kicks off with Junior Carlsbad on Saturday, April 6. Nearly 4,500 kids ages 2-12 will take part in a variety of age appropriate races. One of the wildest half-marathons on the racing circuit returns for its third year to the San Diego Zoo Safari Park on Sunday, May 5, with a brand-new course route that offers runners beautiful vista views of the park and its wild animals. Runners in The Safari Park Half-Marathon are given the chance to race through the scenic San Pasqual Valley past vineyards, golf courses, and orange groves, ending in the heart of the Safari Park surrounded by giraffes, cheetahs, rhinos and flamingoes.

The competitive half-marathon starts at 6:30am in the parking lot of the Westfield North County Mall, just off

of Interstate 15. Awards are given to the top three overall half-marathon finishers and the top three finishers in each division. The 13.1-mile course is limited to 3,500 runners and has a time limit of three hours. VarietyCampz.org Summer Fun K & 1st Grades Summer fun for children entering K and 1st grades in the fall 2013. Students enjoy a wide array of academic, artistic, and outdoor enrichment activities, including on-site water slides and water play on Splash Day. Surrounded by the warmth of friendship, the wonder of nature, and loads of traditional summer fun, young campers find reading, math, music, science, and art activities to nurture their love of learning all summer long.

summer fun PLUS VarietyCampzPlus.org Exploration & Expression 2nd Grade Summer exploration and expression tailored specifically for 2nd graders looking to have fun, exciting and challenging summer experiences. In addition to academic and artistic endeavors, Variety Campz-Plus students go on one field trip per week (typically on Tuesdays). These off-campus enrichment adventures offer opportunities to connect concepts learned in the classroom with real-world, hands-on experiences.

GolfCampz.org Youth Golf Programs 4th to 9th Grades Summer youth golf programs for boys and girls entering 4th to 9th grades in the fall. Beginning and intermediate golfers join the President of the Scholastic Jr. Golf Association, Steve Simons, in 2-week long intensive golf experiences that include classroom and hands-on instruction. Students learn golf history and etiquette along with swing analysis and playing strategies at both ECDS and local golf courses.

LabCampz.org Summer Adventures 3rd to 7th Grades Summer adventures tailored for students entering 3rd to 7th grade. Themed weeks of non-stop learning and fun! Includes 2 exciting field trips per week with plenty of hands-on exploration in the on-site science & technology labs, and visual & performing arts studios. Campers also enjoy water adventures every Friday at a local beach or on our 27’ high GIANT “Hurricane” water slide.

RockBand Workshopz.org Where Musicians Become Performers (Guitar, Keyboard, Percussion & Voice) 3rd to 7th Grades RockBand Workshopz are weeklong musical jam sessions for 3rd to 7th grade students. All are welcome -- beginners, as well as those with more developed musical proficiency. Individual and small group instruction includes guitar, keyboard, percussion and voice. These workshopz offer opportunities for novice and intermediate level musicians to learn first-hand what it takes to play in a rock band, all with the back-up of seasoned professional musicians.

Actor’sWorkshopz.org Weekly Drama Classes 1st to 3rd, 3rd to 6th, 4th to 8th Grades Beginning and experienced “actors” learn basic theater techniques, or take their existing skills to the next level, with world-class drama instructor Catherine Colby! Mini-musical weeks conclude with an on-stage performance for classmates and parents. Audition and Call-Back Workshopz help budding actors hone skills that will enhance their ability to land parts in school or community theater productions.
