Find Your Inner Cowboy at the Poway Rodeo September 27–28
Win Free Tickets! Get in touch with your inner cowboy (or cowgirl) at this year’s Poway Rodeo on September 27 and 28. Watch some of the top riders from across the country competing in events like bronc and bareback riding, steer wrestling, tie down roping, barrel racing, and bull riding. There are competitions for kids too: barrel racing and mutton busting will test younger riders’ agility, strength, and skill as they maneuver around barrels or try to stay atop a sheep without falling off. In addition to these athletic events, the Rodeo Committee puts on the “So You Think You Can Sing” contest at Kaminski’s Sports Bar and Grill, September 6, 13, and 20. This event determines who gets to sing the National Anthem at the Rodeo, and promises to bring some great talent to the stage. Another pre-rodeo event is this year’s big trail ride, taking place September 22. Starting at the Rodeo grounds, the ride will follow the scenic trails of Poway, some of the best in the county. A catered lunch and raffle will be waiting when the riders return. For further information, please visit www.powayrodeo.com. Enter to Win Tickets! It’s easy to win free tickets to the Poway Rodeo. Just fill in the entry form on www.NorthCountySun.com. Ticket winners will be randomly selected and notified by phone and email. Some restrictions apply. Only one entry per person is permitted. Best of luck! See you this summer at the Poway Rodeo!

U.S. Sand Sculpting Challenge: Huge Sand Sculpting Event on ‘B’ Street Pier Labor Day Holiday Week Win Free Tickets! August 30-September 2, Friday – Monday The U.S. Sand Sculpting Challenge and 3D Art Exposition will unload 300 tons of sand onto the B Street Pier for the US Sand Sculpting Challenge. The sand will be carved and molded into beautiful sculptures by nearly 40 artists from all over the world, who will compete in 3 different classes of competition. There is more than $60,000 in prize money at stake. The world’s best sculptors from Italy, Ireland, the Netherlands, Portugal, and Canada will challenge the best in the U.S. from California and Washington. Last year, Rusty Croft from Carmel, CA, won the 2012 inaugural event for the U.S.A. Starting on the Wednesday before Labor Day, artists in the World Masters class will have 4 days to create their masterpieces. Starting on Friday, the public will be able to view the last 2 days of sculpting and have 2 more full days to view the finished work. The pier is a wonderful venue with the Big Bay as a backdrop to the magnificent sand sculptures. Tall ships sail by with full regalia, occasionally recreating cannon battles of yore. Musicians, singers, dancers, and circus
performers entertain young and old. There’s a huge sandbox and truly unique rides for kids. They can try to walk on water, bungy jump, or take a zipline over the show. Dozens of artists who work in metal, glass, ceramics, gemstones, fabric, and more will exhibit and offer their work for sale. And gourmet food trucks will serve wondrous snacks, meals and beverages. A portion of proceeds from the event goes to each of 3 children’s educational charities. Young Audiences of San Diego/Arts for Learning brings performers into elementary and middle schools to show kids what life in the arts is all about. It’s All About the Kids Foundation helps less fortunate children through a network of 14 San Diego charities that serve over 11,000 kids. IAATK directly supports 10 previously homeless kids now in college. The Maritime Museum’s Children’s Education Program lets kids relive history and learn about the science of the sea. The museum’s ships and collections represent San Diego’s great maritime heritage and bring educational programs to life for thousands of children each year,

Oceanside Museum of Art Presents Charles Arnoldi and Tony Delap
LeucadiART Walk
Charles Arnoldi is one of the most significant contemporary abstract painters, sculptors, and printmakers of our generation. Emerging out of the booming 1970s Los Angeles art scene, Arnoldi’s paintings are experiments in color, form and structure. Intersections will present a sampling of Arnoldi’s seminal early stick constructions and chainsaw wood relief paintings that brought him international acclaim in the early 1970s. Paired with selections from his recent Grids, Windows, Arcs, Chainsaw, and Case Study series this exhibition will trace the evolution of Arnoldi’s career over the last 40 years. Interested in ambiguities of perception, Southern California Minimalist Tony DeLap has sought to challenge conceptions of abstraction and illusion for over five
Over 4,000 people are expected to attend this year’s 9th Annual LeucadiART Walk, presented by the Leucadia 101 Main Street. This event features Leucadia art galleries and local artists displaying their art along the west side of Highway 101 in Leucadia. This event is free and fun for the whole family. In addition to artistic displays, there are art demos, live music, children’s art activities, and a beer garden for people 21 and over. There is a free LeucadiART Walk shuttle bus service for the public to use along Hwy 101. Collectable retro “road” maps will be available listing participating art galleries, artist locations, and entertainment. The musical line-up features local talent and promises to be fantastic as in past years. LeucadiART Walk is on Hwy 101 in Leucadia from Phoebe St. to El Portal St. For more information call (760) 436-2320 or visit www.leucadia101.com.

decades. His early sculptural work from the 1960s features key characteristics unique to Minimalism, including elemental shapes like octagons or rectangles, and a handmade, reductive approach to object making. In contrast to his East Coast Minimialist contemporaries such as Donald Judd and Carl Andre who embraced industrial fabrication of objects, DeLap chose to retain an important sense of the unique, singular piece. This exhibition will feature a collection of seminal early pieces including his painted constructions such as Four Dots (1962) that explore DeLap’s consistent dedication to the formal concerns surrounding Minimalism: real and implied physical space, modular and repetitive systems, size, color and materials. La Jolla Playhouse Presents “Sideways” at the Sheila and Hughes Potiker Theatre Through August 18 Sideways is a play by Rex Pickett based on his own novel. It is the story of two friends – Miles, a frustrated novelist, and Jack, a no-name TV actor and director – and their journey across the Santa Ynez Valley wine country. During one last blowout road trip before Jack is to be married, the two men run tangle-footed into their midlife crises, all the while exploring this once little-known central California wine region. In an age where media sensationalism and the role of journalism are consistently in the spotlight, John Guare’s fresh and funny adaptation of this classic comedy has more resonance than ever. This new play “is more intimate-
ly involving than the movie,” enthused the LA Weekly, and will take audiences on what the Los Angeles Times called a hilarious “oenophilial odyssey.” Tuesdays and Wednesdays – 7:30 pm, Thursdays and Fridays – 8:00 pm, Saturdays – 2:00 pm and 8:00 pm, Sundays – 2:00 pm 7:00 pm. Southern California Premiere of Mel Brooks’ Young Frankenstein at Kit Carson Park Amphitheatre August 9-24 Win a Free Pair of Tickets! Escondido’s Patio Playhouse kicks off its summer season, August 9, with the Southern California premiere of the new Mel Brooks’ musical, Young Frankenstein. The script by Brooks is replete with hilarious musical numbers, and closely follows the story of the iconic movie. This production’s energetic cast will induce monstrous amounts of laughter. And you can win a pair of free tickets to the show. See details below. Young Dr. Frederick Frankenstein recreates his grandfather’s experiments by reanimating a lifeless body— with the wrong brain. He is aided by the hunchbacked, bulging-eyed Igor, his beautiful lab assistant, Inga, and an eccentric and frightening housekeeper, Frau Blucher. Donny Bronson, who plays the monster, recalls the spontaneous chemistry the actors felt during their first time rehearsals. “We were on the floor laughing during callbacks. It’s going to be a phenomenal show.” The production, which is part of Escondido’s 10th annual Plays in the Park series, features a live orches-
tra and many well loved musical numbers including “Transylvania Mania,” “He Vas My Boyfriend,” and an expanded version of the classic “Puttin’ on the Ritz” tap dance. “The score and script are brilliant, and the show is campy and cheesy but in the best way possible. It’s hilarious,” says Jenna Wille, who plays Inga, Frankenstein’s lovely assistant. The beautiful Kit Carson Park Amphitheatre in Escondido will be rocking with laughter under the stars—an exorbitant amount of fun at a modest price. The show’s producer, Brenda Townsend, explains how preparing a play at a community theater is both challenging and rewarding. “Everyone at Patio Playhouse is a volunteer. Most of us work full-time jobs and then come to rehearsal after work. It takes so many people to put on a production like this, and I’m really proud of what we’ve accomplished.” Don’t miss this monster mash!

San Dieguito Heritage Museum’s 5th Annual Lima Bean Faire and Battle of the Beans September 28, 12–4pm The San Dieguito Heritage Museum is presenting its 5th annual Lima Bean Faire with the ‘The Battle of The Beans” Cook-off. Over the past three years, the lima bean has been the star of the cook-off. Other beans like the pinto bean, the navy bean, and the garbanzo have felt left out and are becoming jealous. This year, they are challenging the lima to a noholds-barred contest of taste. Local chefs are now permitted to use any bean to create their fabulous dishes. Let’s see who can bring the most taste and style to the ‘Battle of the Beans’. Before there were flowers, lima and other beans were important crops to the early pioneers of Encinitas. They grew easily in our moist coastal climate. To celebrate this agricultural history, the ‘Battle of the Beans’ will offer many delicious dishes. Prizes will be awarded to the very best dishes served and there will be tastings for those who want to rediscover the tasty lima bean. Last year, hundreds of locals truly enjoyed the Lima Bean Fare. Once again,
this year’s festival will feature live music, fantastic raffle prizes, and kids games. Should be a real gas! The San Dieguito Heritage Museum was founded in 1988 and collects, preserves, and interprets the local history of the San Dieguito river area including the communities of Encinitas, Olivenhain, Leucadia, Cardiff By the Sea, Solana Beach, Del Mar and Rancho Santa Fe. The museum is located at 450 Quail Gardens Drive, just north of the San Diego Botanic Gardens in Encinitas, and is open Thursday through Sunday 10 A.M. to 4:00 P.M. For more information and tickets to this event please call (760) 632-9711 or visit www.SDHeritage.org.

Solterra Winery & Kitchen
The Van Alyea family, a young married couple with a newborn baby and a sweet Golden Retriever, have opened the first ever full-service winery, tasting bar and kitchen in Encinitas located on Highway 101 in Leucadia. This is just the beginning of their story, and they are answering the dreams of North County residents and visitors who love fine wine and the SoCal beach lifestyle. Solterra is, beyond a shadow of a doubt, a destination winery on the map of Encinitas and San Diego North County. The 5,000 sq.ft. facility features stunning architecture with high ceilings and large open windows gazing out onto Hwy 101. The winery is a wood barrel room with fermentation tanks, crusher and press. Adjacent to the winery is a full kitchen, bar and dining room. Perhaps the most interesting piece is the long concrete outdoor fire pit bar that seats up to 20, located just inches from the sidewalk and passers by. We’ve all seen large open windows, gas lit heating lamps and outdoor tables in front of bars and restaurants along historic Hwy 101, but Solterra has
outdone them all with their long outdoor fire pit beach bar! The buzz on the street is loud and clear by sommelier, wine lovers, experts, and guests that their wine is absolutely wonderful; and we couldn’t agree more. We highly recommend the Beacons Blend, named after our famous local surf spot. Owner and master winemaker Christopher Van Alyea is pouring more than twenty in-house wine varietals made from premium grapes he’s collected throughout California and Mexico. The Van Alyea Ranch is their vineyard in Sonoma County. Solterra is open for lunch and dinner, from 11:30 A.M. to 10:00 P.M. Monday to Thursday and until Midnight Friday and Saturday nights. You can also enjoy an ice cold local beer and play bocce ball in the back. Solterra Winery and Kitchen is the place to be. Souplantation Del Mar
Souplantation’s Del Mar location has a fresh new look and menu items! Their Del Mar location is the first in North County to offer the new menu. During their Grand Opening a long line formed for several hours as excited diners waited to build-their-own meal and check out their favorite local Souplantation with brand new updates. 10% of the proceeds from the event were donated to the Boys and Girls Club of San Dieguito. The original menu still remains, but with new additions and options. New menu items include cage-free and antibiotic-free chicken skewers, and Niman Ranch steak skewers hot off the grill for an upcharge. This allows guests to add healthy meat to their meal if they wish but it doesn’t force vegetarians to subsidize it. Souplantation will also be launching a local craft beer and wine menu in the future as well. It’s recent “freshlift” allows guests got to experience the new stainless steel dishware, contemporary butcher block tables, open spaces, new décor and the communal eating areas for those who are dining solo or looking for a social experience. The Del Mar location is one of
the first of many Souplantations to undergo a “freshlift” and implement these upgrades. The very first Souplantation brought delicious, healthy dining to San Diego in March 1978. Many folks have grown up creating their own fresh salads and indulging in fresh-baked muffins at their favorite local Souplantation. Tammy Bailey, Chief Market Officer for Garden Fresh Restaurant Corp., wants Souplantation fans to rest assured that it will remain the same Souplantation everyone knows and loves but with a modern updated brand. Great place for lunch or dinner any day of the week, especially for special occasions, birthday parties, business meetings, or family get-togethers. Del Mar: 3804 Valley Centre Dr. (858) 481-3225. Bruegger’s Bagels
day. Their classic breakfast sandwiches combine egg and your choice of peppered bacon, ham, sausage or turkey sausage on a hot fresh bagel. We recommend their new sriracha Egg Sandwich. This delicious sandwich comes with an egg patty with cheddar cheese, sausage, fresh red peppers and sriracha chili sauce, on a bagel (shown in photo). Let the server know if you want a different type of bagel when you place your order. It’s absolutely mouth-watering delicious with just the right amount of spice! Of course, our all-time favorite is their classic Smoked Salmon and cream cheese on a fresh bagel with tomato, red onions and capers. Yum! In addition to their famous bagels, breakfast sandwiches and bagel sandwiches, Bruegger’s also offers a healthier “Under 500 Calorie” menu. If you are a calorie counter, try one of their Skinny Bagels. Guests can now order any of Bruegger’s 15-plus varieties “skinny,” due to Bruegger’s unique slicing process. Instead of changing the
recipe of its time-tested, New York-style bagel, Bruegger’s slices the bagels thinner using a process that removes approximately one-third of the bagel’s center but preserves its unique eggshell crust and delicious toppings. The result is a lower calorie bagel without sacrificing variety or taste. Another healthy choice is their Skinny Zesty Egg White Sandwich. This comes with an egg white patty on a skinny sesame bagel, with turkey sausage, Swiss cheese and sundried tomato spread. Clip their money saving coupon from page 3 and get $1 OFF any breakfast or lunch sandwich. Must present coupon. Or, get $2 OFF any dozen bagels, or a free soft drink with any lunch sandwich. Summer Haircare—Tips And Styles By Haim Knister, Owner Of Haim Salon
Summer brings high temperatures, humidity, sun, salt, chlorine, and travel, and throws a curve into your beauty routine for your hair. Yet to achieve beautiful hair, it depends on how well your hair is taken care of. The summer sun is the most aggressive and you can burn your hair in the hot sun. From such abuse, your hair can become thin, dry and brittle and lose its luster. Therefore it is worth protecting from the sun by wearing hats, using special shampoos that protect the hair from the sun, use masks and conditioners. If your hair is long and frizzy use a moisturizing shampoo to help hydrate hair and calm frizz. Apply a conditioner from the mid-shaft to the ends to seal the cuticle and promote shine. Apply a lightweight mousse from the roots to the ends to increase volume and blow dry the back section first with a large round brush. Stay away from sticky hairsprays, they dry out the hair. And, don’t shampoo your hair every day. To restore volume, sleep with your hair in a high, loose bun and in the morning, release the bun and shake out hair with your fingers. If you have thin and flat hair wash with a volumeenhancing shampoo. Apply a small amount of conditioner
to just the ends so your hair won’t get weighed down. Apply a volumizing spray along the roots at the crown of your head. Flip your hair over and apply a texturizing spray to just the ends. Blow-dry while your head is upside down and work your fingers from back to front, gently massaging the roots. When your hair is completely dry, flip it back over and use your hands to help shake the hair. For coarse and curly hair wash with a gentle, sulfatefree shampoo and conditioner. Nourish and hydrate hair by applying a generous amount of leave-in conditioner to your hair. Work the conditioner from roots to end with a comb. Add a hydrating styling cream through with your fingers to fight frizz while your hair air-dries. In the summer, think about simplicity. Summer is a time to let the breeze whip through your hair, tousling your bun and unraveling your braid just a little bit. There are many styles that work well: Sleek Perfection—Part short hair on the side and rake with your fingers for a laidback, sexy look; The Knot— Move your bun down six inches to the base of your neck for a relaxed, chic look; Waves to last a Day—Revive a blow-out from humidity by wrapping the ends around a large round brush curling iron to get movement and bounce; The Bob with Flair—Fine hair looks full when you cut it into a bob. After curling your hair, tuck up the ends
and pin to your head, using hairspray that is flexible to help it stick; Pick your Side—Create a rounded faux-bobmeets-bun by pulling hair into a low ponytail, securing with elastic just above the tips of your hair. Then roll the tail up and pin it to your head, moving it up the side, just in front of your ear; Braid of the Sea—A loose braid has a romantic feel. You can keep your braid casual by braiding it around your head, letting a few wisps fall out. Secure it with a pretty ribbon. During the warmer weather, it is best to limit the use of the blow dryer and flat iron. When the air is moist it takes longer to style your hair which can result in further damage. If you must use styling tools, apply a generous amount of heat protectant before using them. And, to maintain both your cut and health of your hair, schedule a trim every four to six weeks. Haim Knister is the owner of Haim Salon. The Headquarters Salon and Wig Store Forms New Charity Foundation For Chemo Patients Who Need Financial Help Purchasing Wigs The Headquarters Salon and Wig Store was recently voted Retailer of the Month by Raquel Welch Wigs, and it’s no surprise , because this is one of the best places in all of San Diego to get a wig or hairpiece, especially if you are a recovering chemo patient. Owner, hairstylist, and wig specialist, Cathy Ketchum, is an expert working with wigs and styling hair and especially working with chemo patients. It has been her life dream and goal to someday have a foundation to help patients that are having a hard time financially and need help purchasing a wig. Cathy’s new charity foundation does just this. It’s called “Look Better Feel Good Foundation”. Chemo patients that need help with purchasing a wig can now fill out some paperwork and ask for financial assistance. The Foundation board will consider every application and will soon let patients know its decision. As far as Cathy knows, this is the first foundation of its kind. Cathy and her foundation are just starting up, so if you could, it would be great if you can make a tax-free donation to help chemo patients
afford to look their best while going through the process. Some longer recovering chemo patients need better quality “real hair” wigs because they need to last longer for washing and maintaining, sometimes up to two years or longer. But experience really does matter in this business. Ketchum began working with wigs in East Lansing Michigan in 1975. She opened her first Headquarters Salon in San Marcos on Rancho Santa Fe Drive in 1985, and just recently opened a new, beautiful 2,700 square-foot salon and wig store in San Marcos on North Twin Oaks Road near Hwy 78, across the street from the US Post Office. The Wig Store has a private consultation room. The Headquarters will find and fit you with the perfect wig. And because they are a full-service salon they will custom cut your wig to perfectly fit you, and to make it even more natural, they will also color it to match your hair color or give it a perm. If you purchase a wig from them, they will cut it and customize it at no additional cost...in a very
private consultation room. Headquarters specializes in working with chemo patients. Cathy says, “My whole heart is in the chemo side of the business. I just love my work so much. It’s not about the money.” The Headquarters Salon and Wig Store is a full service salon. Haircuts are only $30 and manicures are $20. Salon Services include: men’s and women’s hair cuts/styling, razor cuts, colors, perms, weaves. They also offer complete nail services and wax services. The wig store carries synthetic and human wigs and hairpieces by Sherri Shepherd, Jon Renau, Raquel Welch, and Eva Gabor. Mention this article and get 10% OFF their 2013 wig collection and get a free cut and style! They have over 100 wigs on display including a brand new line of wigs called “Now” for darker skin complexions by The View co-host, Sherri Shepherd. The Headquarters Salon and Wig Store is located at 405 N. Twin Oaks Valley Rd #114, San Marcos 92069. Call (760) 744-2911 www.theheadquarterssalonandspa.com.
Elements Therapeutic Massage Opens in Carlsbad It’s a myth that all massages are created equal, and Scott Wooden, owner of the new Elements Therapeutic Massage in Carlsbad, is on a mission to help area consumers experience the healing benefits of massage therapy services tailored to meet their unique needs. Unlike most North County area massage retailers, Elements has created a niche by focusing on providing therapeutic massage services. Elements therapists perform Swedish massages meant for gentle stress relief and relaxation, or deep tissue massages, including trigger point work, to meet clients’ unique therapeutic needs. Carlsbad area residents will soon experience the health benefits associated with deep tissue massage, prenatal massages, hot stone massage, sports massage and other massage services. “What sets us apart is our dedication to listening to clients’ needs in order to pair them with the right massage therapist. We identify key details such as type of massage desired, specific pressure needs and individual issues before matching clients and therapists. This approach
allows us to provide a high quality and customized massage for each client,” said Wooden. “The Elements franchise was founded on the healing benefits of massage, and we’re looking forward to making a positive impact in our clients’ lives.” Wooden earned his PhD in biochemistry from the University of Southern California and spent nearly 25 years working in the pharmaceutical and technology industries. After helping discover and develop many biopharmaceuticals, he is excited to enter the massage industry where he can help make an immediate impact on clients’ wellness and quality of life. Once viewed as an expensive splurge, Elements is making therapeutic massage increasingly affordable and available to time-starved consumers. The new Carlsbad studio is open 7-days a week, welcomes walk-ins, and offers a membership program that allows clients to receive regular, discounted massage therapy services throughout each month.
Elements of Carlsbad is located at 3247 Camino de Los Coches. For more information or to schedule an appointment, please call (760) 585-9101 or visit www.elementsmassage.com/SouthCarlsbad.

Summer Sun and Dry Air is Hard on Eyes So often we neglect taking care of our eyes and our vision. Sometimes we don’t pay enough attention if we have dry eyes, blurred vision, or easily get eye infections….especially during the dry months of summer. Don’t take your eyes for granted and take the time to make an appointment with someone that has an extensive background in ocular diseases and conditions. Listen Here: Better Music Websites You Need To Check Out By Anna Shuster
You already know that iTunes and Pandora are solid sources of good music. You’ve probably also heard of Spotify, whose American launch a few years back brought a great new music service to the USA. But what you may not know is that there are other music services that do what those places do and more. Interested? Read on! Songza — Free — online radio If you’re looking for an online music player with a radio feel, but you’re tired of the audio ads and repetitive song choices of Pandora, try Songza. Launched in 2007, it offers professionally assembled playlists in any genre imaginable. Beyond the typical indie, pop, and hip-hop genres, it offers Hawaiian, showtunes, film scores, international music, nature sounds, and more. The particularly special feature of Songza is that it allows you to pick playlists based on your current mood or activity. When you open the website (songza.com), it offers you a “Music Concierge” with five basic options based on the time of day. On a Sunday morning, it might offer you playlists for cooking breakfast, waking up happy, working out, or falling back asleep. The best part is that you never need to pay. Unlike Pandora, where you have to pay to remove those irritating audio ads, Songza never plays ads that interfere with your listening. So what are you waiting for? Go check them out at www.Songza.com. Bandcamp — Pay per download — music downloads On the surface, this website seems similar to iTunes, but with many bands you’ve never heard of. Why, then, should you try out this service? They pay artists more per download. As great as Spotify is, it pays artists less than a cent per play, on average. Amazon and iTunes both take a 30% cut from most artists they host—plus listing fees. But Bandcamp’s only requirement is that they get a 15% cut of what the artist makes. And, if you do more than $5,000 in sales, that number goes down to 10%. The downside of this site is the lack of selection, but if you want to find some obscure gems and benefit smaller artists, www.Bandcamp. com is the place for you. Last.fm — Free — listening tracker and online radio Last.fm is one of the more unique music services, because it does more than just play tunes. It syncs with iTunes, Spotify, and various other music services to provide statistics on what albums, artists, and songs you listen to most. It gives you charts spanning weeks, months, or years documenting your listening preferences. From the stats it gathers, the site provides music recommendations based on your favorite artists. It compiles a personalized radio station for you that is truly tailored to you. You can also choose to listen to stations based on different genres or artists. Essentially, this site is great if you like tracking your personal listening trends and getting really good music recommendations. Try www.Last.fm. Turntable.fm — Free — social music listening This one is a little bit off-the-wall, but it’s received high praise from Wired Magazine and the New York Times. When you sign up, you’re given a little avatar that can roam various online “rooms.” Each room plays a particular kind of music, and three other users are set up as DJs playing different songs and artists in that genre. If one of those users leaves, you can snag their place and play music for the room yourself. If people like what you play, you can earn “DJ points” and get fans along the way, which adds a little bit of an interactive element to the site. But if you’re just in the mood to listen to some cool tunes, www.Turntable.fm is a great alternative to traditional online radio. So if you’re looking to shake up your music-listening experience or you just want to find some cool new songs, you should check some of these websites out. Happy listening!

Favorites and Newcomers Play Carlsbad’s “TGIF Jazz in the Parks” The 28th season of the City of Carlsbad’s “TGIF Jazz in the Parks” free outdoor concerts features a lively mix of beloved local bands, last year’s favorite debut groups, and great new ensembles. The music covers a wide range of jazz-oriented, danceable music from big band swing to rhythm & blues to Latin salsa, with Afro-pop, zydeco and soul in the mix as well. The TGIF concerts continue through August 24, and are presented by the City of Carlsbad Cultural Arts Office. All concerts begin at 6pm and end at 8pm. August 2 at Poinsettia Park–6600 Hidden Valley Road. Free shuttle service will operate between 4:30 and 9pm from North Coast Calvary Chapel. The Bayou Brothers–Cajun Zydeco This beloved San Diego group is making its TGIF debut. The Cajun zydeco these brothers serve up is as authentic as étouffée and alligator sausage. August 9 at Calavera Hills Park–2997 Glasgow Drive Free shuttle service will operate between 4:30 and 9 p.m. Check the web site in June for details. Sierra Leone’s Refugee All-Stars – Afro-Pop & World Known worldwide as the voice of the dispossessed-yet-optimistic people of Africa, SLRAS was the greatest success story of the 2012 TGIF season: infectious, irresistible, inspiring. August 16 at Calavera Hills Park The Styletones–Raw Soul This band hasn’t been around long but it’s built quite a reputation for performing the strong music and truthful, emotional vocalizing that is the essence of soul. And then there are those horns! August 23 at Calavera Hills Park Big Time Operator–Big Band Swing The summer ends on a high note: the clear voice of band leader Warren Lovell and the sustained wail of the region’s hottest brass section. Without a doubt, this group is the TGIF audience’s favorite band.
Patrons should bring low-back beach chairs and ground cover to TGIF concerts. Many bring picnics; light refreshments are also available for sale. Opportunity drawings are conducted during the intermission by the Carlsbad Friends of the Arts to support the concert series and other cultural programs. Warning: Carlsbad police issue parking tickets freely surrounding event venues. Please be very careful where you park! Many venues are not marked well! Del Mar Thoroughbred Horse Racing Features Big Concerts, Beer Fests, Pacific Classic and a Second Race Season in 2014 Win Free Tickets!
Racing at Del Mar takes place Wednesday through Sunday, with post time for the first race on most days is at 2 p.m. On Fridays the first post changes to 4 p.m. The Del Mar Racetrack first opened its gates in 1937, and this summer the legendary racetrack once again welcome the nation’s fastest horses and Southern California’s most spirited party-goers. The seaside facility’s seven-week meet is filled with big races, free concerts, and exciting weekend events. The Seaside Stage will host the racetrack’s Summer Concert Series, featuring free shows from a lineup of performers that includes Fitz and the Tantrums, Weezer and Ziggy Marley. New to the track this year is the Del Mar Grill Fest on August 17, where more than 30 championship barbeque teams, restaurants and caterers will be serving up anything and everything grilled: meats, seafood, veggies and desserts. Del Mar’s beer fests will each feature more than 100 brews, showcasing more than 40 IPAs on August 31. Del Mar’s richest and most prestigious race, the $1 Million TVG Pacific Classic, will take place on Sunday, August 25, and is expected to attract many of the country’s
top jockeys, trainers and racehorses. This year’s calendar also features fan favorites such as the Gourmet Food Truck Festival on August 3, Donut Days on August 24, Free and Easy Wednesdays (weekly), Daybreak at Del Mar (weekly on Saturdays and Sundays) and handicapping seminars throughout the season. Dog lovers can cheer on the fastest dachshunds in the west between races during the Wiener Dog Nationals—a perennial family favorite at Del Mar on Labor Day Weekend, September 1. The big news is that Del Mar may soon be reaping the rewards of a double racing season with the recent closing of Hollywood Park; one in the summer and one in the fall, beginning as early as November 2014. After 75 years, the famed Hollywood Park closed, which means the sounds of thundering hooves may well bring the Breeder’s Cup, a two-day horse racing event and one of the most prestigious races to San Diego. Many compare it to the Super Bowl of Horse Racing and could bring the biggest crowds ever to the Del Mar Race Track. If and when it’s approved by the California Coastal Commission ,and other state and local agencies, it is estimated that it could bring as much as 70 million dollars to our local economy.
For more information or tickets call (858) 755-1141 or visit www.delmarscene.com. Win Free Tickets to the Del Mar Racetrack! It’s easy to win free tickets to the Del Mar racetrack. 37th Annual World Bodysurfing Championships at Oceanside Pier Aug 17–18, Saturday–Sunday, 6am–1pm Enjoy a weekend of the best of the best in bodysurfing at the Oceanside Pier. Approximately 350 to 400 bodysurfers from around the world will once again be kicking, stroking, catching and competing at the 37th Annual World Bodysurfing Championships the weekend of August 17-18. The competition takes place adjacent to the Oceanside Pier where competition heats will begin at 6:15 am each day, last fifteen minutes at a time, and end around 1 pm. A minimum of two contestants per heat will advance to each next round. Wetsuits and fins on the feet will be permitted. On Saturday, Aug 17, 15-Minute Heats will begin at 6:15 am and finish at 1:30 pm. On Sunday, Aug 18, Finals are from 9:45 am-1 pm, culminating with a 2 pm Awards Presentation
Bodysurfers from around the world will compete in their respective age and gender divisions for trophies and prizes. The Men’s and Women’s Grand Champions will be crowned on Sunday afternoon, the final day at approximately 2 pm on August 18. The WBC reserves the right to change the projected schedule for various weather, surf conditions and quantity of competitors. For those unfamiliar with the sport of bodysurfing: bodysurfers ride waves without the assistance of any buoyant device such as a surfboard or bodyboard. Bodysurfers typically equip themselves only with a pair of specialized swim fins that help to optimize propulsion so it is easier to catch large and fast breaking waves. There are many techniques to catch and ride waves. Bodysurfers must time their launch, pick a direction, kick and stroke hard with feet and arms, and then use their back and outstretched arms, to ride the wave both sideways and downward. Turns can be performed by digging the shoulder into the wave, causing the bodysurfer to slide to the side of the wave and accelerate. Advanced techniques include spins and barrel rolls. The World Bodysurfing Championships in Oceanside and the Pipeline Bodysurfing Classic on Oahu, Hawaii are

Professional and amateur surfers from Santa Cruz to Coronado will compete for bragging rights in the Coalition of Surfing Clubs portion of the event, and a total cash purse of $10,000 in the Guy Takayama Pro Noseriding Contest and Pro-Open will be awarded to the top performers in each event. In the Junior Seau Pier Amphitheater area just a few paces from the beach, the Beach Festival will be in full swing! Varua Tahiti e, North County’s premier Tahitian Dance Company, will perform their beautifully choreographed routines Saturday afternoon, and the Oceanside Sound System is the headlining band playing Saturday evening in the Amphitheater. the two biggest bodysurfing competitions in the world. The World Bodysurfing Championship began in 1977, and runs every August in Oceanside. Another long time SoCal contest is the Manhattan Beach Bodysurfing Contest, which is part of the International Surf Festival held in Manhattan Beach, California. It was originally formed by the Gillis Beach Bodysurfing Association, in Playa del Ray and dates back to 1964. It’s impossible to talk about bodysurfing without mentioning the most famous bodysurfing spot in the world, The Wedge in Balboa at Newport Beach, California, just up the coast from us. Wave faces at The Wedge can reach upwards of 30 ft or more on big southern hemisphere and hurricanegenerated swells during the spring, summer, and fall. Known mainly for high performance bodysurfing and intense jaw dropping rides and wipeouts, these waves are created by swells hitting the jetty and rebounding into oncoming waves, creating the “wedge effect,” which results in peaks that can increase to incredible sizes and shapes. The Wedge in Balboa Newport Beach is to bodysurfing what the Pipeline in Hawaii is to surfing. For more information, visit www. worldbodysurfing.org.

Local Salon Benefits Community in a Special Way Having been open for only six months, Bryll Hair Lounge, in La Costa, is already leaving a lasting impression on the community. During the months of April and May, the team at Bryll Hair Lounge, inspired by stylist, Lauren Schneider, encouraged their clientele to donate any used or unused products they had lying around, e.g. hair and skin products and lotions. The purpose was to benefit local homeless and women’s shelters in North County. Before long they had donations flowing in from everywhere. Not only were clients bringing in their own products from under their sinks and cupboards, but some were posting signs and placing donation boxes at their office buildings. One product distribution company, Sweis, Inc., sent boxes of product their way. The team at Bryll was awed by the unexpected response from the community. Being able to use their business as a pedestal to promote community well-being is one of
the reasons they wanted to be small business owners in the first place. When asked what this meant to the salon, owner Bryan Boyd stated, “This event really opened our eyes as to what is possible within a community. The support we received from our clients, distributors, and friends was second to none. We have only been in business for six months. For us to get a positive response such as this is staggering. We are excited to continue these types of events in the future and know that it can only get better.” Bryll Hair Lounge is now offering 20% off to first time customers and has a New Talent Special every Tuesday through Friday. The salon is located at 3263 Camino De Los Coches, in the Sprouts Shopping Center. If you are interested in learning more about Bryll Hair Lounge, you can visit them online at www.bryll.com or call the salon at 760.753.1337. Bryll Hair Lounge is always ready to “Reveal your Style” and “Define your Image!”
Carlsbad Jeweler Gives Tips to Local Charities
More than twenty years ago, a curious practice began at Gems of La Costa: the owners started working for tips! While these local “mom and pop” jewelers are traditional in many ways, Dale & Linda Condy decided to put a new spin on things by doing small repairs in exchange for voluntary donations (tips) for local charities. They call their tips “Charity Charges” and it’s their own unique way of giving back to the community. Jewelers often provide small services such as adjusting a loose clasp, replacing a pin on a watch band, or simply checking and cleaning jewelry. Historically, jewelers have done the repairs as goodwill gestures. It’s how Dale learned the business starting in the ‘60’s and it was natural to continue this approach after opening his store in 1989. Over time, the Condys realized that many customers felt uncomfortable with the free repair. Some would leave cash on the counter in an attempt to pay for the service. The “tips” were collected and it was decided to give them to local non-profit groups. An engraved plate was placed on a glass jar and their “Charity Charges” tip jar was born. Since long retail hours limited the Condys’ ability to volunteer, it became an innovative way for them to give back. It was something their customers felt good about as well. Today, more than two decades and thousands of dollars later, Gems of La Costa continues the practice of working for tips. When the staff can provide certain minor repairs that require an inexpensive part or a small amount of time, they allow the customer to determine the value of the Charity Charge. The voluntary donations are donated to local nonprofit organizations to help fund the work they do. Some of the donations go to Hospice of the North Coast and Dale shares his business experience with this important organization. He serves on the Board of Directors and assists the HNC Resale Shop by assessing the value of jewelry donations. Currently, the Gems of La Costa “Charity Charges” are being collected for HNC’s Pacifica House which will be the first hospice house in North County. So, next time you need a small repair, or your wedding ring cleaned, think about Gems of La Costa and the Condys’ “Charity Charges” jar and feel good about giving to a worthy cause. Gems of La Costa is located at El Camino Real and Aviara Pky at 6985 El Camino Real #107, Carlsbad 92009. Call (760) 930-1200 or visit www.gemsoflacosta.com.

San Diego Zoo Safari Park’s “Summer Safari” and San Diego Zoo’s “Nighttime Zoo” and Koalafornia Dreamin’ We’ve Got Free Tickets! Summer Safari at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park allows guests to experience the sights and sounds of African animals with exciting animal encounters, including Cheetah Run, a unique, jawdropping experience of watching a cheetah do what it does best–run. This free, daily event, weather permitting, is a definite crowd pleaser. During Cheetah Run, the cat races on a straight, 300-foot-long track, stretching its legs to reach a maximum speed of about 70 mph. Long summer days mean more time for fun at the San Diego Zoo with extended hours. The Zoo stays open through September 2, from 9am to 9pm. The theme this summer is Koalafornia Dreamin’. The Hunte Amphitheater is unveiling a new show called “Australiana,” in which Aussie lore comes to life through acrobatics and aerial acts. Costumed char-
acters of a koala, a hand-balancing snake and a Tasmanian devil will perform each day at 2 and 5 p.m. At the Koalafornia Boardwalk, Australian beaches meet California’s West Coast, and you can relax in the shade and enjoy snacks and beer. Stay until the Zoo closes to catch “The Walkabout”, a finale featuring Nighttime Zoo entertainers as they perform down Front Street. The Guided Bus Tour is a 35-minute narrated tour on a double-decked bus and runs from 9:30am to 4pm. It’s a great way to start the day and get a really good overview of the Zoo and animals. The Petting Zoo is open from 9:30am to 4:30pm. The Skyfari Aerial Tram moves over treetops with spectacular views and runs from 10am to 5pm. At the Insect House, sometimes the littlest things have the greatest impact. It’s open from 10am to 4:30pm. Experience the Ice Age 4D Show at the 4-D Theater. Feel the wind, mist, and snow and join the adventure of the Dawn of Dinosaurs and the Ice Age. Special Guided Tours are offered with various topics throughout the day. Call reservation sales for group packages and ticket prices.
