Star Theatre Presents Noises Off September 25-October 4, Select dates Called the funniest farce ever written, this fast paced show presents a manic menagerie as a cast of actors rehearse a flop called Nothing’s On. The setting has been transplanted from English provincial theatre to Des Moines, Iowa, where a second-rate theatrical troupe is preparing to perform their Broadway-bound production. Complicating matters are the personal problems and backstage relationships that have fostered jealousy and petty squabbling, which has intruded upon any professionalism this motley crew could have mus tered. As the company works its way to New York City, the eccentricities of the cast come to the forefront and the per formances on the road dissolve into chaos on and off stage. Set in three acts, Noises Off is a play within a play—Act One being a dress rehearsal where the cast is hopelessly unready and baffled by entrances and exits, missed cues, missed lines and bothersome props; Act Two is a behind the scenes view of the matinee performance one month later; and Act Three is a performance near the end of the ten-week run in which the plot is abandoned entirely. The Star Theatre Oceanside is located at 402 N. Coast Hwy. Oceanside, CA 92054. For specific times and dates visit www.startheatreco.com or call (760) 721-9983.

But they have one last chance to get to Broadway with the anticipated visit of famous director Frank Capra. Their grown daughter Rosalind has brought her fiancée to demonstrate the value of a regular life but she realizes she’s still in love with stage manager Paul. Add Ethel’s nearly deaf and George-hating mother to round out the mayhem. Located at the junction, in the Rancho Santa Fe Plaza, where Encinitas meets Rancho Santa Fe, Firenze Trattoria is celebrating their 20th anniversary this year. Their longevity speaks volumes about their cuisine and service. As owner/restaurateur, Barry Podwell, explains, “We don’t have the luxury of having spectacular ocean views like so many restaurants along the coast, so our food has to be very good to keep us here all these years.” It’s true. Firenze Trattoria may not have the ocean, but it certainly does have spectacular food. They are 2015 winners of the Diners Choice Award from Open Table and have won numerous awards over the years, including Wine Spectator Award of Excellence, and Best Italian by Ranch and Coast. Firenze Trattoria’s authentic Italian cuisine evokes thoughts of Italy’s Tuscany coast with its romance and flavors. The extensive menu includes a plethora of local favorites—too many to list—but we especially recommend their signature Lasagne Firenze. Every Italian restaurant boasts about their lasagna, but this one is truly special.
It’s hard to see the layering of ricotta cheese, a mixture of beef, chicken, and sausage, fresh Roma tomato, mushroom, and parmesan atop marinara sauce, because it’s completely covered with a super light and creamy béchamel sauce. It’s absolutely amazing. Other recommended dishes include: Calamari Fritti Antipasti, with lightly battered, deep fried calamari served with piquant marinara sauce; Risotto Portofino, grilled jumbo shrimp served with artichoke hearts and asparagus, surrounding a center mound of risotto. From Filet Mignon al Casino to Butternut Squash Ravioli, you just can’t miss. Happy Hour is 4-6:30PM Mon-Sun with a popular discounted bar menu for food, wine, cocktails, and beer. Jazz on the Patio is lively every Sunday through Sept. from 5-8:30pm. Mondays are 1/2 off bottles of wine. Firenze Trattoria is located at 162 South Rancho Santa Fe Rd, Encinitas 92024. Call (760) 944-9000 or visit www. firenzetrattoria.com.

Bushfire Kitchen, in the new La Costa Town Square, is the second of two restaurants for Brandon Barwin and cousin Clive Barwin, and gets two thumbs up for quality, healthy, organic, simple food with bold flavors and affordable prices. The owners, originally from South Africa, relocated years ago to Temecula and opened their very successful Bushfire Grill. They now have an even better understanding of what dishes are the most popular, and are passionate about cooking with organic, fresh, and local ingredients, whenever possible. They enjoy serving something special, healthy and not bland, to awaken your taste buds—like their very tender, slow braised Angus Beef Brisket, Pulled Pork, and Chipotle Short Ribs. Their slow braise oven cooks meats overnight and assures the meat falls off the bone. Their 1/2 lb succulent burgers are made from fresh, never frozen, organic grass-fed beef or lamb. We recommend The Californian, which comes with sharp cheddar, local avocado, wild baby
arugala, tomato, house-pickled red onions and basil pesto aioli sauce. Everything on the menu is made from scratch and their bread, rolls and buns are baked fresh in-house daily. Side dishes include baked sweet potato, organic brown rice, Himalayan Basmati rice, garlic mashed potatoes, bacon and baked beans and cooked-to- order fries. Try their premium hot sides and cold salads. One of our favorites is their Quinoa, Beet and Wild Arugula Salad. They have a kid’s menu, baked daily desserts, and serve high quality California wines and craft beers on tap. Keeping conservation and the earth’s ecology in mind, to-go boxes are made from recycled cardboard, not Styrofoam. They have an outdoor patio with music on the weekends. Bushfire is a warm, family-friendly and healthy environment, that you will be happy to call your second home. Bushfire Kitchen is located at 3433 Via Montebello #166, Carlsbad 92009. Located in the Poinsettia Village Shopping Center, just steps from Carlsbad Beach, between Starbucks and Subway, you’ll enjoy some of the tastiest char-grilled fish sandwiches, lunch/dinner plates, or salads in San Diego. The food is simply amazing and their Fresh Fish Market is always stocked with great local catch. Pelly’s Fish Market and seafood restaurant offers locals and visitors the freshest fish in town. Pelly’s is one of the original fish markets in Coastal North County. On any given day, they offer large fillets of fresh ahi, yellowtail, albacore, mahi-mahi, halibut, Atlantic salmon, swordfish, white sea bass (shown in photo), and a wide assortment of local shellfish including
oysters, clams, mussels and lobster when in season. Pelly’s has an excellent reputation with locals for serving delicious fresh fish lunches and dinners. We recommend their char-grilled mahi-mahi and halibut sandwiches, plates or salads, and their fresh grilled fish tacos. If you’re in the mood for a salad, you’ll love their fresh Ono salad, Pelly’s special salad, or their stone crab salad. They have the best chowder, too! Their classic breakfast sandwiches combine eggs with your choice of peppered bacon, ham, sausage, or turkey sausage on a hot fresh bagel. Gaglione Bros. Famous Steaks & Subs
After ten years and two very successful San Diego-based sandwich shops, Gaglione Bros. has finally opened its newest and third location in Encinitas. The word is traveling fast how amazingly delicious their sandwiches are. We absolutely love them! If you haven’t tried one, you are seriously missing out. We are very happy to share with you a discount coupon to try a sandwich on our Coupon Pages and at www.NorthCountySun.com/coupons. Their hearth baked sandwich rolls come from the famous Amoroso Bakery that has been making rolls since 1904. With a wide variety of sandwiches on the menu, their famous Cheesesteak is their pride and joy and is the real deal. If you enjoy Philly Cheesesteaks, you won’t want to miss this one. But, don’t just rely on the Cheesesteak, because their other sandwiches are all delicious and exceptional. Our all-time favorite is their Turk sandwich. Years ago a place in Miramar had a similar sandwich called Turkey Day Any Day, but this one is just as good, if not better! The Turk is fresh baked turkey, with stuffing, cran-
berry and mayo. Try it hot or cold (we prefer the hot). It’s absolutely addicting and one of the best sandwiches on planet earth. Motivated by what they believe a quality, superbly tasting sandwich should be, the brothers began cooking and testing in older brother Joe’s kitchen in Pacific Beach. They added some old family recipes that have been passed down and assembled what was to become the first shop’s original menu. In 2004, feeling confident they had created a recipe for success, the brothers opened the first Gaglione Bros. Famous Steaks & Subs in Point Loma. Their newest location in Encinitas opened just a few months ago. Gaglione Bros. Famous Steaks & Subs is open Monday through Sunday, 11am to 9pm, and is located at 252 N. El Camino Real, Encinitas, 92024 between Encinitas and Leucadia boulevard (in the same plaza as Rubio’s and TJ Maxx). Other locations are in Point Loma, and San Diego. For the Encinitas location, call (760) 944-1521 or visit www.gaglionebros.com.

Brews Travelers 365 – Beer Drinking Adventure: 365 Days, 48 States, 789 Craft Breweries, and 8,044 Beers By Andy Lee
A couple of regular guys with disdain for their jobs, a desire to travel, and an affinity for craft beer, were kidding around about how cool it would be to go on a one-year tour of the U.S.A. to sample beer and turn their world from ordinary to extraordinary. It started with a beer and ended with a beer, and that’s just how the quest of the Brews Travelers 365 began. Brews Travelers 365 are two friends who met on the drum roll team in high school. Michael Roberts, 31, and Brandon Wurtz, 30, both with 4-year college degrees and corporate jobs, began devising their complex travel/beerdrinking odyssey in their hometown of Dallas, Texas. After a year of planning, they quit their jobs, sold their cars, put their things in storage, bought a minivan, and with $17,000 each, hit the road. I had the pleasure of bumping into them while they were on the last leg of their 365-day craft beer drinking adventure, at Port Brewing Company/The Lost Abbey in San Marcos. Over a total of 365-days, they visited all 48 contiguous states in the U.S.A., Washington D.C., 3 Canadian prov inces, and Tijuana, Mexico. They drove over 40,000 miles
during their epic brewery journey; visited a grand total of 789 craft breweries, and “responsibly tasted” 7,124 unique craft beers and a total of 8,044 in all, including beers that they tasted more than once. In California alone, they vis ited 98 breweries and tasted 914 beers. Their adventure took place when gas prices were hov ering around $4 per gallon. According to their calcula tions, Canadian gas prices were the highest anywhere, at around $5 per gallon. Ironically, gas prices just started coming down to $3 during their drive back home. Their budgets included monthly minivan payments, their col lege loan payments, storage payments, gas, food, lodging, and of course, beer! They discovered the cheapest state to drink in was North Carolina with $2-$3 pints, and the most expensive (overall) was California. One brewery in Northern California was the most expensive, where all their beers were $9–$10 a pint. To save money, they often slept in the front seats of their minivan. They slept in front because the seats reclined and there were provisions and beer in the back. They also did a fair amount of “couch surfing”. . . a way to stay for free in other people’s homes. There are couch surfing websites with millions of users, such as www.couchsurfing.org. They enjoyed the people they stayed with along the way, and the homes they visited made it a great experience. They also tried to call ahead to some of the breweries they planned to visit the day before, just to let them know they were coming. While tasting beer
17th Annual Big Horse Corn Maze Festival October 3-31 Bigger and better than ever, the Corn Maze at Big Horse Feed on Highway 79 and Butterfield Stage Road in Temecula, California returns for its 17th year. Come out to the Big Horse Corn Maze Festival and celebrate the Fall and Harvest sea son—it only takes a little determination and a lot of fun to find your way out of the maze. Every weekend in October holds exciting and challeng ing activities at the Big Horse Corn Maze Festival, which opens on October 3 and begins with the Classic Car Craze. The Classic Car Craze hosts a variety of cars from Hot Rods to Antique and Muscle Cars along with a special guest, the original monster truck, “Bigfoot,” which is on display all day with a car crushing extravaganza to watch in the afternoon. As the first weekend’s theme is Old Fashioned Rock’n’Roll, there is also a whole lot of rock and roll fun for the family! The theme for the weekend of October 10-11th is a salute to our Military; October 17-18 is an All American Weekend; and October 25-26 promises to be exciting as Old Fashioned Farm Days lets you churn butter, race pigs and pan for gold. Show your skill in the pie eating contest,
bobbing for apples, and potato sack races and involve your family in good old fashioned farm and family-friendly fun. Every weekend is corny and crazy with the Pumpkin Patch, pony rides, hay ride, pillow jump, animal sharing center, mini maze, pig races, rock wall, corn cannon and face painting. The Corn Maze is open every day beginning October 3 (except October 5 and 12), and the Pumpkin Patch is open every day. The Maze is now scheduling field trips for pre-school and primary education classes in the morning on weekdays, when hundreds of children come visit during the month of October. They all receive an educational presentation from the Scare Crows as well as a walk around the petting zoo and a trip to the pumpkin patch on a hay wagon ride. This is a Temecula tradition and if you have yet to come out, you are invited to come out and get lost! and conversing with brewery owners and brewmasters, every now and then, they were asked where they were stay ing, and sometimes were offered accommodations. I asked them if the rest of the country knew about the booming microbrewery scene in San Diego. Michael replied, “It’s like a myth, almost mythical, and talked up a lot. People all over the country talk about San Diego. It’s kind of a beer haven that everyone desires to go and check out. And, it was just as great as expected.” Some of their favorite San Diego North County breweries include Latitude 33, Belching Beaver, Rip Current, Pizza Port, The Lost Abbey, Iron Fist, and Wavelength. They loved Mother Earth, and the attitude and beer at Societe, and said that Stone Brewery World Bistro & Gardens in Escondido was probably the best beer garden in the country. Michael said, “It was an incredible adventure and expe rience. Outside of the breweries, we got to see the entire country. We saw the Badlands of South Dakota, Mount Rushmore, the Grand Canyon, Niagara Falls, the Smokey Mountains, and so much more. We planned it out, so that at the end of each day, we would end up at a brewery. . . or two. But honestly, what started out about the beer, ended up about the people . . . the people we met along the way.” Read their travel blog with all the beer and brewery stats, descriptions, and photos at www.brewstravelers365.com.

7th Annual Lima Bean Cook-off at the San Dieguito Heritage Museum September 26, Saturday, 12pm-4pm It’s a family-friendly fun afternoon at the 7th annual San Dieguito Heritage Museum’s Lima Bean Cook-off and Faire. The Cook-off is one of the two main fundraising events held by the Museum each year, and there is some thing for everyone. Entry to Museum grounds and exhibits are free at the Lima Bean event. Tasting tickets on the day of the event are $20 for tastes of all the entries, and $5 for Children 12 and under. It’s the Battle of the Lima Beans Cook-off, with the best lima bean recipes vying for first place in amateur and pro fessional categories. The public is invited to taste and vote for the People’s Choice award. Creative cooks compete to present the tastiest lima bean creation. The categories range from appetizers to desserts. Last year’s winner was Mayor Kristin Gaspar’s Lima Bean Ice Cream. Don’t be late, as hundreds of folks may beat you to the best tastes!
Remember that tastings last from 12:30 to 3:30pm, or until every bean is gone. Available for purchase are hot dogs, drinks, beer, wine, and sweets. The famous Rita’s Ice Custard, to which Encinitas has quickly become addicted, is once again coming to the event. Visitors can also tour the restored interior of the Teten house, the oldest farmhouse in Olivenhain, now on the Museum grounds. The house is now completed and fur nished with much of the original Teten furniture, setting the scene for a true 1930’s farmhouse. Gladys Teten her self is on hand with wonderful stories of life in the house where she was born. She can tell you about life during the Depression years. Don’t forget to ask her to tell the story about her Christmas Eve turkeys. Explore the old general store when beef was 52 cents a pound and peek inside the settler’s shanty, and the local barbershop won on a poker
bet. The 4 H Clubs of Olivenhain & San Dieguito are ready with many sweet and gentle small farm animals, kids’ crafts, dem onstrations, and information on what today’s 4 H clubs are all about. Kids can also enjoy a free Lima Bean Craft from the weekend Families Make History Museum program. Enjoy the bake sale, and the special bags of lima beans and recipe books for sale. Find bargains at the Silent Auction tables, along with the biggest Plant Auction table ever. Discover how interesting our North County early history can be at the San Dieguito Heritage Museum. The museum is located at 450 Quail Gardens Drive, Encinitas. For tickets and more information, call the museum at (760) 643-0711.
Save Hundreds or Thousands of Dollars By Having Dental Work Done In Tijuana By Andy Lee
I have a very good dental plan, but it doesn’t cover gums, molar crowns, some root canals, bridges, etc. I recently cracked the porcelain of a 15-year old crown and it wasn’t covered under my dental insurance. I called a few San Diego dental offices and was quoted between $1,100– $1,500 for a porcelain over metal crown. I went online to look at dentist reviews, and found a den tist in Tijuana, Shirley Baker, D.D.S.. She was advertising permanent porcelain crowns for $320. I called her office and asked many questions. Her English-speaking recep tionist convinced me that I should give it a try, and I’m glad I did. The next morning I drove to the border and parked my car on the U.S. side and walked across. It’s a bit of a
walk and you should bring a friend. The dental office had a yellow taxi waiting for me (no charge!) The driver, Manny, spoke perfect English and in 5 minutes we arrived at the office. There was a coffee shop on the first floor lobby. I bought a latte. The elevator woman opened the elevator door and used her card and pushed the 3rd floor button for me. I opened the door and the office looked just as nice as any dental office in the U.S. and better than most. I filled out a detailed dental history form. There was a woman sitting next to me and told me her husband was getting a root canal and that they have been coming here for six years. They too live in San Diego. I was soon called in. Dr. Baker and everyone there spoke perfect English and were very professional. After an X-ray the doctor and
hygienist went to work. They gave me an iPod to listen to music. After removing the cracked crown she took another X-ray because she found a large cavity below the gum line under the old crown. She proceeded to remove the decay, filled the cavity, took an impression for a new crown, and gave me a temporary crown. I returned in 10 days for the permanent crown, and it looks more natural than my other two crowns. Total cost was $320 plus $50 for the filling. I saved over $1,000 and had one of the best dental experiences ever. Manny drove me back to the border (no charge, but I gave him a $10 tip). I saved over $1,000 and the experience was great. Here is Dr. Shirley Baker’s num ber (619) 270-2165. Please let them know you read about this in the North County Sun. Keep smiling!

This advisory to home sellers is provided as a courtesy by David Boe, the owner and broker of Boe Real Estate . . . sharing 30-years of local broker experience from selling over 1,000 homes. Advisory #1: Beware of the “High Price” listing presentation. These agents have one goal and that is to get a signed listing contract by presenting an unrealistic high list price . . . knowing that the seller will eventually have to lower the list price to sell their home. Two clever responses can help sellers mitigate this scenario. Advisory #2: Beware of the “Universal Phone Call” that goes something like this; “Hello, I have a buyer interested in buying your home, are you interested in selling?” Truth is very few of these solicitation calls have a specific buyer. If you answer yes to their question, then simply ask them to put their buyer’s name on a “single party” listing agreement, so your obligation to pay a reduced commission is only if that specific buyer buys your home. Buyer’s broker commission is normally 2.5 to 3 % . . . so why pay more? Advisory #3: Beware of the “Great Promise”. These agents convincingly tell you that they list and sell most of their own listings, with no other agent involved . . . and because of this, they will lower the total listing commission from 5 or 6% to 3% when they sell your home themselves. The truth is, very few agents list and sell their own listings! This is easily veri fied by an MLS printout of SOLD listings that clearly shows the listing and selling offices involved in all the sales. Are they the same offices? . . . probably not. Advisory #4: Beware of a lower than normal commission posted in MLS to “buyer’s broker”. While commissions are negotiable, money motivates sales people and buyer’s agents typically expect a minimum of 2.5% for selling a median priced home . . . and they deserve it! If less than 2.5% is proposed by your listing agent, ask them for an MLS printout of the listings for your neighborhood that will clearly show the commissions paid to other buyer brokers . . . rarely will you see less than 2.5%. You want maximum agent motivation to sell your home by offering at least 2.5% to the buyer’s broker. David Boe offers 30-years of broker experience and personally handles all the negotiations and required paperwork. David Boe has saved his buyers and sellers thousands of dollars with reduced commissions to sellers and rebates to buyers. You can reach David Boe at his direct line at (760) 846-0486 or visit www.DavidBoe.com. CalBRE#00672393.

Encinitas Classic Car Cruise Nights August 20 and September 17 The Encinitas 101 MainStreet Association presents its 16th annual Classic Car Cruise Nights. Cruise Nights include new nightly themes and live bands. The series, sponsored by O’Reilly Auto Parts, is held on the third Thursdays through September, from 5:30-7:30pm. “We’ll have something special every month,” says Encinitas 101 Executive Director Thora Guthrie, “including a Heels and Wheels night, showcasing women and their classic rides, and a VW Bus Night.” September has a special tradition to always feature Woodies. Following the September Cruise Night is the Wavecrest Woodie Meet on September 19 at Moonlight Beach, run by San Diego Woodies.
Volunteer event orga nizer and emcee Doug Jones describes the scene as “like in an old seaside postcard, where hundreds of classic and vintage cars drive along surf-washed cliffs to the town that is home to the only coastal cruise in North County San Diego.” As always, Encinitas 101 welcomes all classic and vintage vehicles to this free monthly event, where drivers take spaces along Coast Highway 101 and in adjacent parking lots, or simply cruise up and down the main street. For more information please visit www. encinitas101.com.
3rd Annual Dine Out for the Cure October 7, Wednesday, All day The third annual Dine Out for the Cure makes for one delicious day as local res taurants and patrons across San Diego dine out for the cure to support the fight against breast cancer. On October 7, participating restaurants donate 10-25% of the day’s pro ceeds to Susan G. Komen San Diego to sup port education, outreach, free mammograms, financial and food assistance, transportation and more. By enjoying a meal at some of San Diego’s most notable restaurants, you can make a difference in the lives of local women and their families affected by breast cancer. Imagine if you were too weak to even be able to make din ner for your family. That is a reality in the lives of some of
the women that Komen serves, and with the money raised from this event, they will be able to take that burden off their shoulders. Making dining plans at a participating restaurant sup ports so many San Diego breast cancer patients and helps them become breast cancer survivors. Last year around $10,000 was raised, which is equivalent to 200 days of warm meals delivered to women struggling to put food on the table. This year, they are hoping to exceed that amount. Invite your friends and family, put on your pink, and enjoy a night out that supports those who need it most. The price is the cost of a meal. For more informa tion and for a list of participating restaurants visit www. komensandiego.org/DineOut.

Heats last 15 minutes, with at least two contestants per heat advancing to the next round. Wetsuits and fins on the feet are permitted. The World Bodysurfing Championships in Oceanside and the Pipeline Bodysurfing Classic on Oahu, Hawaii are the two biggest bodysurfing competitions in the world. One of the most famous and treacherous bodysurfing spots in the world is The Wedge in Balboa at Newport Beach, California. Wave faces at The Wedge can reach upwards of 30 ft. or more on big southern hemisphere and hurricane-generated swells during the spring, summer, and fall.
