Peter Pan Through August 6 This high-flying musical whisks audiences off to a place where dreams are born and no one ever grows up. Peter and his mischievous sidekick Tinkerbell visit the Darling children’s nursery late one night and, with a sprinkle of pixie dust, begin a magical journey across the stars. In the adventure of a lifetime, the travelers come face-to-face with a ticking crocodile, a fierce Indian tribe, a band of bumbling pirates, and the villainous Captain Hook. The show features dazzling sets and costumes and spectacular flying effects. Titanic: The Musical August 17–September 3 Maury Yeston’s riveting and haunting musical based
on the worst nautical disaster in history (and not the movie), depicts the final hours of the real-life people who set sail on the “unsinkable” Titanic. Winner of five Tony Awards including Best Musical, Titanic celebrates the human spirit of the rich and the poor, the lovers, the heroes and cowards for a theatrical experience that will stay with you long after the curtain comes down. The Addams Family September 14–October 1 They’re creepy and they’re kooky, mysterious and spooky. Yes, they’re the Addams Family, coming to life in a new macabre musical comedy. Join Gomez and Morticia Addams for a morbid family gathering when daughter Wednesday brings home her “normal” boyfriend and his uptight parents. Everything will change for this family and

Ain’t Misbehavin’ Through August 7 Ain’t Misbehavin’ is a roof-raising musical tribute to the black musicians of the ‘20s and ‘30s. Based on the signature Fats Waller song, this rousing musical revue takes audiences back to the glory days of the Harlem Renaissance, when the Cotton Club and Savoy Ballroom served as playgrounds for high society. Audiences tap their feet to the beat as five performers deliver an evening of rowdy, raunchy, and humorous songs. A Conversation with Edith Head August 8–9 This feast of delicious behind-thescenes stories about Hollywood’s greatest stars provides an intimate portrait of Hollywood’s legendary costume designer. The Male Intellect: An Oxymoron August 10–13 Men and women from eighteen to eighty will laugh non-stop as Robert Dubac embarks on a quest to under-

Jesus Christ Superstar Through August 7 It seems especially fitting that the first rock opera, created as a concept album at the end of the turbulent 60s, should have at its center a social and political rebel. Jesus’s meteoric-like rise in renown provides a parallel to contemporary celebrity worship. As his radical teachings are evermore embraced, Judas increasingly questions the enlightened motives of this new prophet, resulting in betrayal. Christ’s final days are dramatized with emotional intensity and explosive theatricality. Arsenic and Old Lace August 12–August 28 Writer and notorious marriage detractor, Mortimer Brewster, falls for girl-next-door Elaine Harper, and they tie the knot on Halloween. When the newlyweds return to their respective family homes to deliver the news, Brewster finds a corpse hidden in a window seat. With his eccentric
stand opposite gender. With a shrug of his shoulders or a crook of his neck, he seamlessly transforms himself into five hysterical boneheads who offer sidesplitting advice on how to best straddle the gender gap, all while drinking a beer.
The Book of Moron August 11–14 This show features satire that cuts with a clever intelligent edge. Robert Dubac takes audience members on a hilarious joy ride over the pot-holed highways of cultural hypocrisy. Suburban Showgirl August 15-17 This dramatic musical comedy takes you into the heart and soul of a modern day dancer/wife/ mother. While locked in the bathroom 5 minutes before curtain, former Rockette-turnedMagician’s Assistant Wendy Walker looks into her past to understand how her perfectly choreographed life has spun wildly out of control. aunts, disturbed uncle and homicidal brother, he starts to realize that his family is even crazier than he thought. Sweet Charity September 2–November 20 Welk Theatre San Diego Meet Sweet Charity, the girl who wants to be loved so much that and she tries too hard to get it and loses sight of her true self. Charity sings, dances, laughs and cries her way through romances with the “animal magnetism” hero, the “ultrachic continental” hero and the “impossible-to-believe-but-he’s-better-than-nothing” hero. Sweet Charity is a Bob Fosse dance musical based on Federico Fellini’s screenplay for Nights of Cabiria. Welk Resort Theatre is located at 8860 Lawrence Welk Dr., Escondido, CA 92026. Call (760) 481-7700 or visit www.welkresorts.com/theatre. Win Free Tickets! To enter to win a pair of tickets to Sweet Charity, please visit www.NorthCountySun.com and fill out the entry form. The Cocktail Hour September 7 – October 2 Mix two upper class New Englanders, their over-privileged adult children and endless cocktails for a delightfully intoxicating evening of comedy. John arrives for dinner at his parents’ home carrying his provocative script in hand that leaves the family “shaken and stirred.” Hysterically funny and heartbreakingly poignant, The Cocktail Hour is an entertaining family reunion “on the rocks”. North Coast Repertory Theatre is located at 987 Lomas Santa Fe Drive, Solana Beach. For more information call (858) 481-1055 or visit www.northcoastrep.org. Win Free Tickets! Disney’s Beauty and the Beast August 12-27 Based on the smash hit 1991 Disney movie and dating back to a late 18th-century classic French fairy tale, Beauty and the Beast tells the story of Belle, a beautiful and intelligent young woman who feels out of place in her provincial French village. When her father is imprisoned in a mysterious castle, Belle’s attempt to rescue him leads to her capture by the Beast, a grisly and fearsome monster, who was long ago trapped in his gruesome form by an enchantress. The only way for the Beast to become human once again is if he learns to love and be loved in return. Sylvia September 2-25 Audiences love this uproarious comedy about Greg, a middle-age man unhappy with his life, going through a mid-life crisis. His busy, educator wife, Kate, is not a supporter of the idea or of the timing, and does not appreciate Greg’s rash decision. Their relationship suffers from this new addition to their family, and they are counseled by their friends new and old, as well as their therapist (all played by the same actor). Patio Playhouse is located at 116 S. Kalmia Street, Escondido, CA 92025. For more information call (760) 7466669 or visit www.patioplayhouse.com.

If you answer yes to their question, then simply ask them to put their buyer’s name on a “single party” listing agreement, so your obligation to pay a reduced commission is only if

that specific buyer buys your home. Advisory #3: Beware of the “Great Promise”. These agents convincingly tell you that they list and sell most of their own listings, with no other agent involved…..and because of this, they will lower the total listing commission from 5 or 6% to 3% when they sell your home themselves. The truth is, very few agents list and sell their own listings! This is easily verified by an MLS printout of SOLD listings that clearly shows the listing and selling offices involved in all the sales. Are they the same offices?....probably not. Advisory #4: Beware of a lower than normal commission posted in the MLS to “buyer’s broker”. While commissions are negotiable, money motivates sales people. Buyer’s agents typically expect a minimum of 2.5% for selling a median priced home….and they deserve it! If less
than 2.5% is proposed by your listing agent, ask them for an MLS printout of the listings for your neighborhood that will clearly show the commissions paid to other buyer brokers. Rarely will you see less than 2.5%. You want maximum agent motivation to sell your home by offering at least 2.5% to the buyer’s broker. This advisory to home sellers is provided as a courtesy by David Boe, owner and broker of Boe Real Estate; sharing 30-years of local broker experience from selling over 1,000 homes. David Boe personally handles all the negotiations and required paperwork. David Boe has saved his buyers and sellers thousands of dollars with reduced commissions to sellers and rebates to buyers. Kids will enjoy making a free craft, while adults will find bargains at the Silent Auction tables, purchase items at the bake sale, or pick up a locally grown plant from the Plant Auction table. On-The-Tracks Brewery
We love to tell you about local family-operated breweries, and On-The-Tracks Brewery, located in Carlsbad, has a long family history in North County San Diego. Great grandpa made a living working on the railroad and hails from Oklahoma, and grandpa was born in a train car “on the tracks.” Both great grandpa and grandpa relocated to Carlsbad in the 1920s. After ten years of backbreaking hard labor on the tracks, great grandpa was given a ticket by the railroad to any place he wanted to go, and he chose Carlsbad. Today, their decedents, father and son, John and Greg own and operate On-The-Tracks Brewery and provide thirsty customers with great tasting handcrafted and environmentally responsible beers in the Scottish and English style. On-The-Tracks Brewery is a small craft brewery that shares their
labor of love with locals and visitors. They brew excellent ales, stouts, porters, and IPAs. Bruegger’s Bagels is open every day of the year. Try a Bruegger’s Breakfast Sandwich for the perfect way to start your day. Their classic breakfast sandwiches combine egg and your choice of peppered bacon, ham, sausage or turkey sausage on a hot fresh bagel. We recommend their new Mediterranean Bagel breakfast sandwich or their Greek Goddess lunch sandwich. Of course, our all-time favorite is their classic Smoked Salmon and Cream Cheese, stacked high on a fresh bagel with sliced tomato, red onions and capers. In addition to their famous bagels, breakfast sandwiches and bagel sandwiches, Bruegger’s also offers a healthier “Under 500 Calorie” menu. If you are a calorie counter, try one of their Skinny Bagels. Guests can now order any of Bruegger’s 15-plus varieties “skinny,”
due to Bruegger’s unique slicing process. Instead of changing the recipe of its time-tested, New York-style bagel, Bruegger’s slices the bagels thinner using a process that removes approximately one-third of the bagel’s center but preserves its unique eggshell crust and delicious toppings. The result is a lower calorie bagel without sacrificing variety or taste. Another healthy choice is their Skinny Zesty Egg White Sandwich. This comes with an egg white patty on a skinny sesame bagel, with turkey sausage, Swiss cheese and sundried tomato spread. Bruegger’s operates 300 bakeries in North America with 8 bakeries in San Diego. Renowned for its award winning bagels, Bruegger’s offers a wide variety of freshly prepared breakfast and lunch options made with high quality ingredients served with its unique brand of hospitality. Port of San Diego’s Parade and Festival of Sail Graces San Diego’s Waterfront Labor Day Weekend, September 2-5, Friday-Monday The Port of San Diego Festival of Sail, hosted by the Maritime Museum of San Diego, transforms the North Embarcadero into a nautical theme park. More than twenty tall ships and other fascinating vessels from around the world visit San Diego on September 2-5. Festival visitors can tour the ships, enjoy food and drink from dozens of restaurants, play in a petting zoo, see lots of pirates and cannon battles on the bay, shop at over 150 festival booths, or take a sunset cruise. Over 125,000 people are expected to attend the event along the beautiful shoreline. The festival kicks off with a grand parade of sail on San Diego Bay at 1:30pm on Friday, September 2. The parade is led by the recently launched San Salvador, a replica of Juan Cabrillo’s 16th century galleon. More than a dozen majestic windjammers sail into San Diego’s harbor in a magnificent nautical procession. The best spots to view from shore include the Maritime Museum,
Cabrillo National Monument, local restaurants and businesses on Shelter Island, Harbor Island and the North Embarcadero. Ships are open for visitation starting on Saturday, September 3 at 9am. The festival includes more than twenty tall ships and other extraordinary vessels from around the world: the official tall ship of California; the Californian; the Gaff topsail schooner Bill of Rights; Irving and Exy Johnson; twin ships from San Pedro; and many more. A complete list of the participating ships can be found on the museum’s website. Please note that the list of ships scheduled to appear in the festival and parade is subject to change. Join the crew for a cannon battle at sea and experience naval warfare during the age of sail. Several ships engage in cannon battle re-enactments on San Diego Bay during the festival. Individuals can purchase tickets to be on board for the experience. Sailing tickets are for sale on the museum’s website. Cannon battle sails do sell out. In addition, a petting zoo, jump house and craft activities are open throughout the weekend. The petting zoo is included with admission. Visitors must purchase a tall ships ticket to tour the festival ships. Each participating ship has its own unique stamp and guests can get their tickets stamped at each ves-
sel. Entrance to visit the vendor area is free. The Festival of Sail is located along the North Embarcadero between Ash and Grape Streets. Visitors are urged to use public transportation. The County Center/ Little Italy trolley station is only 3 blocks from the festival. Paid parking lots are available. Tickets can be bought on the Maritime Museum’s website at www.sdmaritime.org or at the festival.

5th Annual U.S. Sand Sculpting Challenge and Dimensional Art Exposition Win Free Tickets! Labor Day Weekend, September 2-5, 9am-7pm American Express has named San Diego’s own U.S. Sand Sculpting Challenge and Dimensional Art Exposition as one of just 20 “Must See” Seaside Festivals in the world. “There were only 3 other events in the U.S. recognized that way” said Joyce Summer, executive producer of the event. “We are honored by American Express selecting us as one of the world’s best, as we were last year when USA Today named us one of the 10 Best in this country.” The Port of San Diego’s famed U.S. Sand Sculpting festival returns to the ‘B’ Street cruise ship terminal pier for the 5th consecutive year, and is open to the public throughout the entire Labor Day weekend, from Friday, September 2 through Monday, September 5 from 9am-7pm daily. While it takes two full weeks from start-up to tear-down (including bringing 300 tons of sand onto downtown San Diego’s cruise ship pier), the public has just four days to see the many magnificent sculptures on display on the Pier. World Master sculptors from Japan, Russia, Latvia, the Netherlands, Spain, Ireland and Canada challenge
some of the best sand artists from the U.S. for $60,000 in prize money, and of course, national pride. Last year’s champion Melineige Beauregard from Montreal is coming back this year to defend her title. Rusty Croft, from Carmel, CA, winner of the first event held at the downtown pier location in 2012, is returning to the competition after spending 2 years as Director of Sand Operations. In addition to World Masters who work individually, eight 3-person teams compete in the Cool California Carver class. There are 23 amazing sand sculptures altogether and over 1,000 works of art in other media that visitors may purchase and take home, including wall décor, glass, acrylic, ceramic and metalwork, jewelry, clothing, and accessories. 15 hand-selected gourmet food trucks are on the pier, serving snacks, meals, beverages and desserts, and beer and wine are available for adults. For kids, there are 5 fantastic rides, including a zip line that is aimed straight

40th Annual World Bodysurfing Championships at Oceanside Pier Aug 20-21, Saturday-Sunday, 6:30am start The World Bodysurfing Championships in Oceanside and the Pipeline Bodysurfing Classic on Oahu, Hawaii are the two biggest bodysurfing competitions in the world. The World Bodysurfing Championship began in 1977, and returns every August in Oceanside. Over 350 of the best of the best bodysurfers from around the world will be kicking, stroking, catching and competing at the Oceanside Pier in Oceanside. The contest starts at 6:30am each morning. On Sunday, August 21, the Quarter Finals, the Semis and Finals are taking place for all age brackets. The Men and Women’s Grand Championship Final follows the Final for the last age group, and the champions are crowned thereafter.
The WBC reserves the right to change the projected schedule for various weather, surf conditions and quantity of competitors. Heats last 15 minutes, with at least two contestants per heat advancing to the next round. Wetsuits and fins on the feet are permitted. Vendors are also on the Strand during the Championships. For those unfamiliar with the sport of bodysurfing: bodysurfers ride waves without the assistance of any buoyant device such as a surfboard or bodyboard. Bodysurfers typically equip themselves only with a pair of specialized swim fins that help to optimize propulsion so it is easier to catch large and fast breaking waves. One of the most famous bodysurfing spots in the world is The Wedge off Balboa Island at Newport Beach, California, just up the coast from us. Wave faces at The Wedge often reach upwards of 30 ft. or more. For more information visit www. worldbodysurfing.org.
Experience worldclass surfing, music, food and merchandise that embodies the SoCal surf culture. All event proceeds are funneled back into the local surfing community. The Oceanside Longboard Surfing Club contributes to the California Surf Museum to preserve and perpetuate the rich history and culture of surfboard riding. The event is free. The Oceanside Pier is located at 200 N. The Strand in Oceanside, CA. Call (760) 500-0745 or visit www.oceansidelongboardsurfingclub.org.

Protect Your Eyes From UV Sun Rays
Save Hundreds or Thousands of Dollars By Having Dental Work Done In Tijuana
El Nino or not, living in San Diego we are fortunate to have a high percentage of sunny days. This increases the amount of harmful UV light we are exposed to. Unfortunately, 30-40 percent of people don’t wear sunglasses on a routine basis. UV exposure can have long term side effects such as early onset cataracts, pterygium, eye cancer, and macular degeneration. Be sure to purchase sunglasses with 100% UVA/UVB protection or polarized lenses which help with glare situations such as snow or water sports. Protection for kids’ eyes are often overlooked, but they actually invite more UV rays into their eyes due to larger pupils and less UV blocking of the natural lens inside the eyes. Solana Beach Family Optometry offers a wide selection of sunglasses, including Maui Jim, Serengeti, Bolle, Callaway, Mark Ecko, and Kate Spade. Dr. Kristin Peterson-Salgado offers comprehensive eye exams for adults and children at her full-service optical department at 977 Lomas Santa Fe Drive, Suite B, Solana Beach 92075. I have a very good dental plan, but it doesn’t cover gums, molar crowns, some root canals, bridges, etc. I recently cracked the porcelain of a 15-year old crown and it wasn’t covered under my dental insurance. I called a few San Diego dental offices and was quoted between $1,100–$1,500 for a porcelain over metal crown. I went online to look at dentist reviews, and found a dentist in Tijuana, Shirley Baker, D.D.S. She was advertising permanent porcelain crowns for $320. Her Englishspeaking receptionist convinced me that I should give it a try. The next morning I drove to the border and parked my car on the U.S. side and walked across. It’s a bit of a walk and you should bring a friend. The dental office had a yellow taxi waiting for me (no charge!) The driver spoke perfect English and in 5 minutes we arrived at the office. There was a coffee shop on the first floor lobby. I bought a latte. The elevator woman opened the elevator door and
used her card and pushed the 3rd floor button for me. I opened the door and the office looked just as nice as any dental office in the U.S. and better than most. I filled out a detailed dental history form. There was a woman sitting next to me and told me her husband was getting a root canal and that they have been coming here for six years. They too live in San Diego. Dr. Baker and everyone there spoke perfect English and were very professional. After an X-ray the doctor and hygienist went to work. They gave me an iPod to listen to music. After removing the cracked crown she took another X-ray because she found a large cavity below the gum line under the old crown. She proceeded to remove the decay, filled the cavity, took an impression for a new crown, and gave me a temporary crown. I returned in 10 days for the permanent crown, and it looks more natural than my other two crowns. Total cost was $320 plus $50 for the filling. I saved over $1,000. A taxi drove me back to the border (no charge). I saved over $1,000 and the experience was great. Here is Dr. Shirley Baker’s number (619) 270-2165. A San Diego tradition, the Luau and Legends of Surfing Invitational brings together surfers, scientists and community members to support the fight against cancer. The beachside fundraiser kicks off at 7am with a surfing tournament that pairs teams of four with a surf legend to compete in the contest. The luau follows at 11:30am with live entertainment and a tropical buffet. Live and silent auctions feature one-of-a-kind pieces of surfinspired artwork, exceptional surfboards and vacation packages. The program closes with the presentation of the Rell Sunn Award, which honors an individual who has made a difference in the battle against cancer and who embodies the “aloha spirit.” The 2016 honoree is businessman and philanthropist T. Denny Sanford. All proceeds from the Luau and Legends of Surfing Invitational will benefit Moores Cancer Center at UC San Diego Health. To date, the annual event has raised more than $7 million to help transform cancer prevention, detection and care. The surfing tournament takes place at the beach near Scripps Pier in La Jolla. Tickets to the luau are $200 per person and sponsorships are available. For tickets, visit www.luauandlegendsofsurfing.org or call (858) 8225630.
