San Marcos Theatre West Presents Babes in Toyland December 13–15 The City of San Marcos Theatre West Youth Theater presents the musical production of Babes in Toyland, at the San Marcos Community Center from December 13 to 15. The show features a cast of local actors aged 7 to 17. The original Babes in Toyland film is a 1961 Walt Disney Christmas musical directed by Jack Donohue. It stars Ray Bolger as Barnaby, Annette Funicello as Mary Contrary, Tommy Sands as Tom Piper, and Ed Wynn as the Toymaker. It was based on Victor Herbert’s popular 1903 operetta Babes in Toyland. There had been a 1934 film also titled Babes in Toyland starring Laurel and Hardy,
and three television adaptations prior to the Disney film, but Disney’s was only the second film version of the operetta released to movie theatres and the first in Technicolor. However, the plot, and in some cases, the music, bear little resemblance to the original as Disney had most of the lyrics rewritten and some of the song tempos drastically changed. San Marcos Community Center is located at 3 Civic Center Drive. Show times are Friday at 7:30 pm and Saturday at 2 and 6 pm and Sunday at 2 pm. Ticket prices are $7 for youth/students/seniors and $10 for adults. Visit www.san-marcos.net or call (760) 744-9000.

There’s a wonderful new bistro that just opened its doors in the town of San Elijo Hills called Stoked! The local community has seen a couple of cafés make a pretty good try to bring in customers, but nothing brings in a steady flow of happy repeat customers than great food, good value, and wonderful service, and I can attest that Stoked! is offering the perfect recipe for success. New owner and proud San Elijo resident, Chris Vulovic, has a history of success being a corporate CEO, a consultant, a caterer, and the author of “I Love Food” (available on Amazon). She has driven by the restaurant’s location, which is visible on San Elijo Road, and finally made a decision to put together a business plan and restaurant that is perfect for locals, kid’s going to and from the two schools that are within walking distance, North County foodies and wedding and party planners. The indoor ambiance is comfortable and very attractive, but not over stated, and she has outdoor umbrella seating in the front, a beautiful back patio built around a rock fireplace (hence the

Are you feeling Lucky? Well you should, because an exciting new pizza and ale restaurant has come to the San Marcos/La Costa border on Melrose and Rancho Santa Fe Road. Three things you will notice immediately; 1) the hand-tossed, thin crust pizza is out of this world and made with fresh local ingredients, 2) they serve local craft beers, Boylan’s pure cane fountain sodas and fresh lemonade, and 3) the service is friendly and efficient. The atmosphere is just what you expect from a local classic pizza and ale restaurant. Lucky’s is unpretentious, classy, and attractively priced! You can zip in on a quick lunch break and pick up a slice and a salad, or enjoy a beer during their 3 – 6pm Happy Hour. Sit inside or relax outside on their patio, watch some sports on one of their 4 flat screens and just hang out. Great pizza, craft beer, and sports…it’s the perfect trifecta. All the sauces, dressings and dough are made in-house and they
Just steps from the Pacific Ocean, Fresco Trattoria, in Carlsbad Village, has been serving some of the most wonderful Italian cuisine since 1999 and is truly a local favorite. Originally from Sperlonga, Italy, Chef Leone D’Arcangelo has been sharing his love of cooking and his family recipes for everyone to enjoy. From the moment you walk through the front door to the last spoonful of spumoni, the flavors and the service come together like a boat trip on a Venice canal. Beautifully set tables with painted murals and fresh flowers adorn the main dining room. The atmosphere and the distinct Italian aromas will take you away. Every dish served comes with a basket of fresh baked bread with a side boat of Italian marinara. For a special treat over the holidays, try their full rack of lamb with a port wine reduction, paired with a nice
Papa Tony’s Pizza has undergone a complete facelift, remodel, name change to Pizziaolo (which means pizza chef) and new ownership. Still related to the famous and iconic pizzeria that Encinitas and North County residents have embraced since 1984, uncle Joe Vitale has finally handed over the pizza paddle to his nephew Anthony Deluca, who in his own right, is a young master pizza chef with big pizza pies in his eyes. Anthony, born and raised in San Diego is a first generation born in the U.S. from Sicilian parents. He began working in his family’s pizzeria when he was twelve and later graduated from the California Culinary Academy in San Francisco, which is now the Cordon Bleu. “I’m very excited to be part of this great Encinitas community and can’t wait to introduce my Italian culinary recipes. I really want to do whatever I can to give back to the community, our local schools, and local businesses.” said Anthony.

Located at the Forum in Carlsbad, Diane Powers’ Casa de Bandini is a North County destination for regionally inspired Mexican fare. Its sights, sounds and flavors of Mexico greet you as soon as you walk through the door. It’s like a museum inside, decorated down to the tiniest detail with hand-crafted furnishings, fine Mexican folk art and colorfully hand-painted murals. Intricately designed lanterns and stars of tin, brass and glass illuminate the Cantina, where guests enjoy their famous Bird Bath Margaritas. Guests can dine under color-drenched umbrellas in the outdoor patio, reminiscent of the vibrant haciendas found throughout the Mexican countryside, complete with lush landscaping of succulents, cacti, palms and flowering vines. Diners are charmed nightly by strolling mariachis playing popular Mexican ballads. Bandini uses only the freshest ingredients and offers 14 salsas and sauces made fresh daily, delicious selections of homemade salad dressings, and hot corn and flour tortillas prepared throughout the day between the Cantina and dining room at the Tortilla

Year in style and reserve your table for the festivities. This winter Vigilucci’s Restaurant Group is excited to announce the expansion, remodeling and relocation of its popular Vigilucci’s Trattoria Italiana. Moving to 530 N. Coast Hwy 101 on the corner of Athena St. in Leucadia, the new location will provide the space needed to better accommodate the growing number of private party requests while enhancing its charming, intimate ambiance. A major transformation to the property, formerly operating as Robbie’s, is underway, with the Trattoria debuting its new look in January 2014. “It was almost 20 years ago that we opened the Trattoria and introduced North County San Diego to the food and culture of my hometown,” recalls restaurant owner, Roberto Vigilucci. “It pleases me that, after all these years, the public’s appetite for the authentic Italian cuisine we serve continues to grow and thus our need to expand.” To book your next party contact Events@Vigiluccis.com or visit www.vigiluccis.com for menus and locations.
out the holidays. Join their Wine Club and get 20% OFF all wine purchases and invitations to all their events. Dining guests get 10% OFF any bottle of wine purchase or 15% OFF 6 bottles or more. The Van Alyea family, a young married couple with a baby and a sweet Golden Retriever, have opened the first ever full-service winery, tasting bar and kitchen in Encinitas located on Highway 101 in Leucadia. Master Wine Maker, Chris Alyea, says, “We have 60 tons of grapes coming in within the next 6 weeks.” This amounts to 150 barrels, which equates to 300 bottles per barrel. And, this is just another day in the life of the Alyea family and Solterra winery. They are truly answering the dreams of North County residents and visitors who love fine wine and the SoCal beach lifestyle. Solterra is beyond a shadow of a doubt, a destination winery on the map of Encinitas and San Diego County. Their 5,000 sq.ft. facility features stunning architecture with high ceilings and large open windows gazing out onto Hwy 101. The winery is a wood barrel room with fermentation tanks, crusher and press. Adjacent to the winery is a full kitchen, bar and dining room. Perhaps the most
interesting piece is the long concrete outdoor fire pit bar that seats up to 20, located just inches from the sidewalk and passers by. We’ve all seen large open windows, gas lit heating lamps and outdoor tables in front of bars and restaurants along historic Hwy 101, but Solterra has outdone them all with their long outdoor fire pit beach bar! The buzz on the street is loud and clear by sommelier, wine lovers, experts, and guests that their wine is absolutely wonderful; and we couldn’t agree more. We highly recommend the Beacons Blend, named after our famous local surf spot. Owner and master winemaker Christopher Van Alyea is pouring more than twenty in-house wine varietals made from premium grapes he’s collected throughout California and Mexico. The Van Alyea Ranch is their vineyard in Sonoma County. Solterra is open for lunch and dinner, from 11:30 A.M. to 10:00 P.M. Monday to Thursday and until Midnight Friday and Saturday nights. You can also enjoy an ice cold local beer and play bocce ball in the back. Solterra is located at 934 North Coast Hwy 101, Leucadia 92024. Open Tue–Sun; closed Mon. North County Restaurant Reviews Pelly’s Fish Market
Carlsbad Ranch Market
Bruegger’s Bagels
Over the holidays families are turning to a healthier alternative than turkey or beef, and Pelly’s Fish Market offers locals and visitors the freshest fish selections in town! Pelly’s is one of the original fresh fish retail markets in Coastal North County. On any given day, depending on the season, Pelly’s offers large fillets of fresh ahi, yellowtail, albacore, mahimahi, halibut, Atlantic salmon, swordfish, sea bass, and a wide assortment of local shellfish including oysters, clams, crab, and shrimp. Buy it fresh from their retail fish counter and take it home, or have them throw it on the grill and serve it to you as a grilled fillet, grilled fish sandwich, or as a salad. Any one of these choices is absolutely fabulous. Pelly’s offers a catering service that will suit any family gettogether, bowl game, or corporate holiday party. Ask them about special orders for the holidays or their amazing holiday seafood platters! Think about a fresh seafood platter for the Superbowl! Big sellers are their cevice, stone crab, or bay shrimp salads, as well as their popular fresh local lobster, when in season.
Pelly’s has a reputation as the best place for delicious fresh fish lunches and dinners, especially their char-grilled mahi-mahi, char-grilled halibut, and of course their unbelievable crab cakes and grilled fish tacos. Their coconut shrimp appetizer comes with a spicy plum sauce. If you’re in the mood for a salad, try their fresh ono salad, or bay shrimp and stone crab salad. All of their fish sandwiches are amazing. We highly recommend their famous Manhattan red or Boston white clam chowder. A cup is only $3.25 and a large bowl is only $4.50. Pelly’s isn’t a fancy sit down restaurant, but the quality of their freshly prepared seafood more than makes up for it. On a sunny day enjoy their great food on their newely renovated outdoor patio. Their prices are very reasonable. Check their board for the Catch of the Day.
The holidays are here, and the big grocery stores are getting packed with impatient shoppers. Why not stock up on some quality, local fruit and vegetables and daily groceries at your local neighborhood market? Impress everyone at your family meal and at your company’s holiday party with produce and party supplies from Carlsbad Ranch Market. This time of the season, Carlsbad Ranch Market has a wide assortment of apples, persimmons, figs, end-of-season sweet California corn, locally grown heirloom tomatoes, pumpkins, winter squash, and fresh baked Julian pies. One of their very popular items is their San Marzano canned tomatoes for only $3.79. They also have a really great selection of hard to find Lithuanian food products. Carlsbad Ranch Market is the place to get your fresh Julian Pies. These famous pies are always fresh baked without preservatives, and so you can’t
buy them anywhere. Carlsbad Ranch market usually offers their Julian Pies $1-2 less than most grocery stores. We highly recommend their daily homemade Mexican Tortilla Dip, their fresh Guacamole Dip, and excellent fresh Salsas along with their huge assortment of locally made Tortilla Chips and Tortillas. Carlsbad Ranch Market is an indoor fruit and vegetable stand and much more. There isn’t a salad bar around that compares to the price and selection of their hot and cold salad bar. Daily made delicious soups, tortilla pie, lasagna, pastas, rice dishes, hot vegetable dishes and cold salad bar items are sold by weight. Buy a little or pile it on; either way, it’s hard to hold back when you see their amazing selection.
Clip their coupon from our coupon page or from their ad on page 3 and get any bagel and cream cheese and small cup of coffee for only $2.49. Just in time for the holiday season, Bruegger’s now has a delicious new breakfast egg sandwich called Chimi Cheddar. It’s a really delicious sandwich with egg, peppered bacon, green peppers, and cheddar cheese on a plain bagel. The Chimichurri sauce really makes this sandwich special. The zesty sauce contains a mixture Jalapenos, lime juice, olive oil, onions, thyme, parsley, cilantro, garlic, and red wine vinegar. The flavor is subtle at first, but the more you eat, the better it gets. If you are a calorie counter, Bruegger’s offers a healthier “Under 500 Calorie” menu. Try any one of their sandwiches on one of their Skinny Bagels and don’t lose a bit of flavor. Bruegger’s slices their skinny bagels

Paint and Fold Your Own Poinsettia at the San Dieguito Heritage Museum Every Saturday and Sunday in December, 12-4pm Local Families learn about the history of the poinsettia and how important it was to North County San Diego. Paul Ecke bought property in the 1920s and turned the relatively unknown plant into the holiday icon it is today. To celebrate this heritage, families paint and fold their own poinsettias and take them home for a wonderful holiday decoration. Each weekend there are free hands-on experiences that highlight a particular era of San Dieguito history. The historic eras and corresponding activities include: Native American Period rock painting and acorn grinding; Rancho Period adobe brick making, cattle roping and soap making; Pioneer Days butter making, washboard clothes washing and quilt making; Flower Growing Period seed planting, plant identification and plant dyeing; and
Surfing, concern for ocean ecology events with balsa minisurfboard shaping, kelp cookie making, and ocean awareness experiences. The Museum’s exhibits are open during the activity times with docents to guide you through the fascinating history of San Dieguito. With these new family activities, families can visit the Heritage Museum on any weekend and know that new and interesting experiences await them. While you’re at the Museum, check out Al’s Barbershop exhibit, a recreation of the barbershop that was on Coast Highway 101 from the 1930s to the 1950s. See the antique chair and all the tools of the trade that will bring back memories of your first trip to the barber. The San Dieguito Heritage Museum is located at 450 Quail Gardens Drive in Encinitas. For more information call (760) 632-9711 or visit www.sdheritage.org.
Oceanside Museum of Art Jen Trute Retrospective Exhibit December 8–April 21, 2013 Recognized for her environmentally-conscious oil paintings, Oceanside Museum of Art is mounting a retrospective exhibition featuring Jen Trute’s artwork from 2000-2011. Trute had a short, but successful career as an artist exploring her passion for combining Renaissance style techniques of glazing with her desire to create greater awareness for our changing ecology through art. This exhibition features large-scale paintings from her many different series along with a selection of never-be fore-seen drawings. This is the first museum exhibition of Trute’s work since her passing in Carlsbad, CA on July 23, 2011. Using her knowledge and dark sense of humor to express her concern for environmental issues, Trute’s oil paintings earned her awards and were exhibited in various galleries and museums. She also served on the board of the San Diego Museum of Art Artists Guild and had her work featured in a number of publications. Flavia Gilmore: Paper, Wood, Metal December 8–April 28, 2013 In her playful assemblages, Flavia Gilmore creates surprising juxtapositions of utilitarian objects that evoke a poignant look at consumer culture. Primarily working with found material and domestic debris, the work in this exhibition will take a focused look at Gilmore’s long and distinguished career in San Diego over the last 25 years. The Beauty in the Beast: Crafting Creature by Neville Page Through January 6 Neville Page is internationally recognized for his character and creature design in numerous films such as James Cameron’s Avatar (2009) and J.J. Abram’s Star Trek (2009). His ability to create mythical anatomy, believable surface detail and personality through his drawings allows the audience to identify with the character and immerse itself in an alternate reality. The Beauty in the Beast: Crafting Creatures by Neville Page presents original designs from blockbuster films he has worked on such as Prometheus (2012), Super 8 (2011), Green Lantern (2011) and Tron (2010), among others. These works showcase Page’s use of traditional media as well as digital tools such as Photoshop and Zbrush to create fantastic creatures and exotic characters. Featuring early pencil sketches to final digital concepts and 3D models, this exhibition explores Page’s complex developmental design process. The Oceanside Museum of Art is located at 704 Pier View Way, Oceanside. Visit www.oma-online.org or call (760) 435-3721 for more information.

December 7, Saturday, 5pm This year, the 2013 Encinitas Holiday Parade will roll along Coast Highway 101 on Saturday, December 7. The 5:30 pm, nighttime parade is preceded by a 5:00 pm tree lighting ceremony at the Lumberyard (near Starbucks). This year’s Parade theme is “Growing Holiday Cheer” – celebrating Encinitas’ rich agricultural history, from flowers to fruit trees, and everything in between. This year’s Grand Marshal selection is Evelyn Weidner. Talk about a “Green Thumb,” Evelyn produces the only greenhouse Poinsettia Tour in San Diego and even has a Begonia named after her. A longtime fixture on the Encinitas flower scene, and an icon in Encinitas’ growing history, Evelyn will lead the Parade down Historic Coast Highway 101. Parade entries, which will include floats, marching bands and children’s groups among other things, will travel south along South Coast Highway 101 beginning at the corner of “D” Street and finishing at “J” Street. “Come on out and cheer as the nearly 100 parade floats and entries make their way down the Parade route on Historic Coast Highway 101. The Parade has been a 50 year-plus Encinitas tradition for Encinitas area residents,” Recreation Supervisor Nick Buck states. “One of the great things about the Parade is that we have something like 3,000 children in the Parade. That means that we have all of those parents, grandparents and friends along the Parade route enjoying the show and showing their support. It’s a great event and the perfect way to kick off the holidays in Encinitas.” The Encinitas Holiday Parade has been a tradition for 66 years, and this year is bigger and better than ever. Free parking shuttles will run from 4-8:30pm from Scripps Hospital Encinitas on Santa Fe Dr. (ADA accessible bus) and from the Magdalena Ecke YMCA parking lot at 200 Saxony Rd. Avoid congestion; come early and stay late to enjoy Coast Highway 101 shops and restaurants. For additional information call (760) 633-2740 or visit www.EncinitasParksandRec.com

KPRI 102.1 Holiday Soiree December 8, Sunday Every year KPRI 102.1 puts together an amazing holiday charity concert. This year it will be held at California Center for the Arts, Escondido on Sunday, December 8. Proudly sponsored by Mossy Volkswagen and Woodchuck Cider, tickets for this event are now on sale. Headlining bands include The Head & The Heart, Matt Nathanson, and Dawes. Head and The Heart–So many decisions in life and in the music we love can come down to a critical tug between the logic in our heads and the hot red blood beating through our hearts. Seattle’s The Head and the Heart live authentically in that crux, finding joy and beauty wedged there. Their music pulses effervescently—both explosively danceable and intuitively intelligent. With Americana roots

and strong vocal harmonics that swell like a river, this band finds its anchor in solid songwriting that has even the jaded humming along by the second listen. Their music has a counter-cultural optimism, with roots that grow deep and melodies that lodge themselves far into that place inside you, where the head meets the heart. Matt Nathanson–In a strange yet very real way, Last Of The Great Pretenders could just as easily be called Meet Matt Nathanson. Matt Nathanson has been making his good name as a recording artist and live performer for years now, yet with Last Of The Great Pretenders, Nathanson’s latest and greatest effort to date, he has made a very conscious artistic decision to open up and offer far and away the most personal, deeply felt music of his life. The many fans who Nathanson gained with his last two popular studio albums, 2007’s Some Mad Hope—which featured
5th Ave Side Stage
his breakthrough hit “Come On Get Higher”—and 2011’s Modern Love can finally now get to know and love this gifted singer-songwriter in a whole new way. In other words, there’s some real blood on these tracks. Dawes–The band Dawes plays music that sounds reminiscent of 1970s artists like Jackson Browne and The Band, but their approach to a recording career is completely modern. For starters, the band doesn’t put a big focus on CD sales. They’ve been known to sell their records to fans at shows for less than a store charges, and take a liberal attitude towards CD burning. “Maybe we won’t have the same numbers as back in the day,” said Taylor Goldsmith, the band’s frontman and main songwriter. “But if we continue to sell out venues and continue to grow as a live band, the CD sales will follow.” Which is another way Dawes reflects the modern music industry: they’re road dogs. “Playing every night, no days off, sounds great,” Goldsmith said as he and his bandmates sat in a Lower East Side restaurant a few hours before performing a sold-out show at the Bowery Ballroom in New York. San Diego Opera’s return of beloved Pagliacci by Ruggero Leoncavallo January 25, 28, 31 and February 2 The San Diego Opera opens their 2014 season on Saturday, January 25, for four performances only. One of the most powerful operas in the repertoire, Pagliacci is gut-wrenching as the hunchback Tonio, a member of a traveling troupe of players, is rejected by Canio’s wife, Nedda. After Tonio sees Nedda with another man, in an act of revenge he tells Canio. In the famous aria “Vesti la giubba”, Canio applies his clown make-up saying that the show must go on, but creates his own murderous ending before horrified onlookers. Performed in Italian with English translations above the stage. Making his return to the Company to sing the role of the murderous clown Canio, is American tenor Frank Porretta who was last heard as the Duke in Rigoletto in 2002. Soprano Adina Nitescu makes her Company debut as Nedda, Canio’s ill-fated wife. Also making a Company debut is baritone Rodolfo Giugliani as the hunchback Tonio, who is in love with Nedda. Baritone David Adam Moore sings the role of Nedda’s lover, Silvio. And, rounding out the cast is tenor Joel Sorensen as Beppe. Conductor Yves Abel leads the orchestra for these performances. Director Andrew Sinclair returns to stage the action. The set design is by John Coyne and costume design is by Ed Kotanen. The lighting designer is Michael Whitfield. This particular production of Pagliacci is owned by San Diego Opera. These performances will be the fourth time this opera has been performed by San Diego Opera with other performances in 2008, 1979 and as far back as 1969. Pagliacci will have a live radio broadcast on Saturday, January 25, at 7pm on KPBS radio, 89.5 FM (97.7 FM Calexico) and online at www.kpbs.org San Diego Civic Theatre single ticket prices, through December 31, start at $35 and can be purchased by calling (619) 533-7000 or online at www.sdopera.com.

Beatles 50th Anniversary of Ed Sullivan Show on Exhibit February 2014 marks the 50th anniversary of the Beatles appearance on the Ed Sullivan show; a day that changed the lives of millions of people. To celebrate this monumental event, the Morrison Hotel Gallery will exhibit rare and historic photographs of not only the Sullivan appearance, but also behind the scenes images from their 1964 tour and beyond. Latest Hair And Make Up Trends For The Holiday Season By Haim Knister As the holidays get closer, so does the urge to freshen your look with some special touches – smoky eyes with a sparkly twist, glossy waves, or beautiful cranberry lips. Adding flair is about balancing a chic updo or bun with a rich eye or lip to create elegance. 2013 holiday hair trends include updos, buns, retro waves, and braids, as well as eyes designed with metallic shadows. The slick updo-retro style is a perfect choice for both casual and elegant occasions. A glossy head-hugging updo goes perfectly with sequins. By rolling the hair inward, working horizontally across the head, and using pins to keep in place, this look will turn heads. For a loose updo, the hair is gathered softly and pinned to create a simple effect with more volume.
Buns are a new, hot trend for women. The style suits most face shapes unless you have an oblong face shape, you should avoid a top bun, as it will add length to your face. Side buns, created by placing a low ponytail slightly off-center and braiding the hair loosely, tucking the braid under with pins is an amazing look. A few pieces of hair can fall from the top, and then curled to add elegance. For a formal old-Hollywood look, retro waves are a beautiful option by using a side-sweep of long, soft waves to have strong movement and waves around the face. Perhaps a light perm would give hair a marcel wave and French twists are still popular. Accessories such as beaded headbands, rhinestone bobby pins or jeweled clips can adorn this stunning look, as well as adding gloss to add to the look. This year has been fabulous for hair color, with the creation of many unique and original color trends. One of the
The Big Hollywood Secret By: Yadira Hood, Bryll Hair Lounge Stylist Every year on the red carpet, whether it is at the Grammy’s, VMA’s, or Oscars, beautiful women strut in front of the masses and display hairstyles that we feel are impossible to accomplish. If you are like me, you gawk and drool over wanting your own hair to look this way; long, lavish, full of volume, and simply stated, just perfect. We wonder to ourselves; How do they do it? Is their hair just perfect ? Who is their famous hairstylist? The answer to these mystery looks are extensions. You may be saying to yourself “I would love my hair to have more volume and body,” or “I just really want a change that is going to last.” You may ask questions such as, “Wouldn’t you be able to see my extensions because my hair is so fine?” or “Aren’t they high maintenance?” To respond to these questions, let’s look at the stunning Giuliana Rancic from the widely known television station E! At the beginning of her career she was idolized for her long, healthy, perfectly groomed blonde hair. Jump forward to the 2013 Grammy’s; she appeared in front of the cameras with chocolate brown mid length hair. In
September of this year she popped up showing off her cute new bob. All of her flawless looks have been achievable with the use of hair extensions. She has mentioned in interviews that she uses “individual extensions” to achieve her looks. No matter what look you wish to achieve, hair extensions can help you create it. My preferred method is the “hair loc” method. This technique requires no glue, heat, tape, sewing, or anything that will cause harm to your hair. They are copper beads that attach to equal amounts of hair to avoid any extra weight on your natural hair. This method allows for the extensions to work flawlessly in all hair types especially fine or fragile hair. Just as you would with any hair investment you decide to make, proper maintenance is required to maintain the desired look achieved. About every 6 – 8 weeks as your hair grows you will need to get them adjusted back to the base of the hair. Regardless of whether or not you wear your hair in a ponytail, swim in the ocean, or have time in the morning to style your look, extensions will fit your needs.
Seeing Is Believing And Looking Great Is Nice Too So often we neglect taking care of our eyes and our vision. Sometimes we don’t pay enough attention if we have dry eyes, blurred vision, or easily get eye infections. Don’t take your eyes for granted and take the time to make an appointment with someone that has an extensive background in ocular diseases and conditions. If you are looking for a caring and professional optometrist, then we recommend Dr. Kristin Peterson- Salgado of Solana Beach Family Optometry. Dr. Kristin Peterson-Salgado graduated from the University of California, Davis in 1993 with high honors then went on and graduated from the University of California, Berkeley School of Optometry in 1997. For 13 years she has been practicing medically-based optometry with a focus on ocular disease, geriatrics, traditional and hard-to-fit contact lenses, diabetic exams, and Lasik or cataract surgery pre-operative exams.
Dr. Peterson-Salgado opened her private practice in Solana Beach in 2010 with a desire to continue her medically based practice while also incorporating vision exams for the entire family. Dr. Peterson-Salgado enjoys fitting all types of contact lenses, including bifocal, monovision, rigid gas permeable, and astigmatic lenses. She also has an extensive background in the treatment of dry eye conditions. She is board certified in the treatment and management of ocular disease and can prescribe medications for eye infections, allergies, and dry eyes. Dr. Peterson- Salgado grew up in Del Mar and currently lives in Solana Beach with her husband (4th generation Solana Beach resident) and their 2 kids. Call for an appointment to see Dr. Kristin Peterson-Salgado at Solana Beach Family Optometry at (858) 259-8239 or stop in at 977 Lomas Santa Fe Drive, Suite B, Solana Beach CA 92075.
most popular is Ombre hair color which has become much bolder over the year. The contrast between the dark roots and lighter ends is stronger and tones of red and copper will be used at the root to add definition, giving a twotoned gradient color effect. Makeup is essential to complete your holiday style— something simple, yet chic and memorable. Two looks that are hot and classic right now are cranberry lips balanced with a light eye, and the smokey, shimmering metallic eye paired with light lips. Haim Knister is the owner of Haim Salon. His professional award-winning staff is dedicated to staying up to date with the latest styles and will be ready to help their client’s look and feel stunning this holiday season. Hansen Surfboards is Geared Up for Winter When Don Hansen started carrying snow gear at his store decades ago, he did it because of the enthusiasm Southern California surfers showed for surfing at dawn then heading to the mountains to ride the slopes the same day. That enthusiasm has grown, and with it so has Hansen Surfboards’ reputation as one of the top retailers for buying the latest in ski and snowboard gear. “We work hard to stay on top of what’s new for each snow season. We demo it and make sure it’s the best equipment. If our employees wouldn’t ride it or wear it, then we won’t sell it,” said Josh Hansen. In addition to ski and snowboard equipment, the store features the latest in snow fashion for men, women and children as well as accessories such as gloves, hats and other items. “One of our most popular winter items is UGG boots, shoes and slippers. They go almost as fast as we put them out,” said Josh Hansen. “Because of the demand, we carry one of the largest UGG selections in North County.” First worn by Australian surfers in the 1960s, UGGs are comfortable sheepskin boots perfect for cold winter months. Classic UGGs are worn for comfort, and now more recently, the variety of styles available – short, tall, with bling and without – proves that sheepskin can also be fashionable. No matter how cold it gets, surf’s always up in SoCal, and Hansen Surfboards’ boardroom remains fully stocked throughout the year with hundreds of surfboards, surf accessories and experts to recommend the best surfboard for any ability. Founded in 1961, Hansen Surfboards is San Diego’s largest surf shop and credits the San Diego community, surf legends and brands that have been a big part of its success. HansenSurf.com was recognized for its outstanding customer service by STELLAService, along with 50 top U.S. retailers. With more than 16,000 square feet of retail space, Hansen Surfboards offers something for everyone in the family and recently celebrated 50 years of success as a singlestore, family-owned and operated retail business. Eight to ten thousand runners and walkers are expected to converge on coastal North County at the inaugural U-T California 1020 on February 16. The event features a spectacular 10-mile coastal course through Del Mar, Solana Beach and Encinitas. Twenty live rock ‘n’ roll bands will be on stage playing every half mile along the way and a featured headliner band will rock the finish line party at the Del Mar Fairgrounds when all participants have finished. The event is title sponsored by the U-T San Diego newspaper and has been in the works for over a year. Race Director Peter Douglass of TurnKey Operations first proposed the event to the three cities in May of 2012. After numerous city council meetings and planning sessions with city agencies he was given go ahead to proceed. In addition to the rock ‘n’ roll musical theme, the U-T California 1020 will feature a huge finish line festival at the Del Mar Fairgrounds with a headliner concert and beer garden. A generous prize money purse is up for grabs in the elite runner division and there is nice local prize money for San Diego County residents. All participants will receive a shirt and a commemorative finishers medal. A two-day race expo will be held in conjunction with the event on Feb. 12 & 13 at the Del Mar Fairgrounds where all participants will go to pick up their race packets. The expo is free and will also be open to the general public. The U-T California 1020 is benefitting 4 local non-profit groups in coastal North County; Del Mar Community Connections, the Del Mar Village Association, the Gateway Park Campaign and the Cardiff Mainstreet Association. It is also raising money for the American Cancer Society. For more information, visit www.CAL1020.com.

Holiday Bowl at Qualcomm Stadium
Carlsbad Marathon and Half Marathon and Kid’s Marathon Mile
December 30, Monday, Kick-off at 7pm- ESPN
January 19, Sunday, 6:15am & 7:45am
Considered “America’s Most Exciting Bowl Game,” this is the thirty-sixth year of the Holiday Bowl. The game is supported by a year of events, including the nationally televised Big Bay Balloon Parade, an outrigger challenge and luau, a golf tournament, a 3-on-3 basketball tournament, and their famous Wiener Dog Races. The Bridgepoint Education Holiday Bowl kicks off at 7pm, Monday, December 30, at Qualcomm Stadium. The game matches teams from the Pac-12 and Big 12 Conferences. Next season, the 2014 Holiday Bowl will enter a new era as it begins a six-year partnership with the Big Ten Conference and will be extending its current relationship with the Pac-12 Conference for six more years. The Holiday Bowl will have the second pick from the Pac-12 after the College Football Playoff structure per selection guidelines established by the Conference. The Alamo Bowl has the first selection. The Big Ten team will be determined after discussion between bowl and conference officials to create the best possible matchup. The Holiday Bowl is great for the San Diego economy. In its 35-year history, the Holiday Bowl has generated over $500 million in economic impact. Nine of the last ten Holiday Bowl games have sold out. Tickets are now on sale and can be purchased through the bowl’s ticket office at Qualcomm Stadium, by phone at (619) 283-5808, or by visiting www.ticketmaster.com.
2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi Russia Feb 7-23 The 2014 Olympic Winter Games will be the first time that the Russian Federation will be hosting the Winter Games. The Soviet Union hosted the 1980 Summer Games in Moscow. This year’s host city, Sochi, has a population of 400,000 people and is situated in Krasnodar, which is the third largest region in Russia. The Games will be organized in two clusters: a coastal cluster for ice events in Sochi, and a mountain cluster located in the Krasnaya Polyana Mountains. This will make it one of the most compact Games ever, with around 30 minutes travel time from the coastal to mountain cluster. The Sochi Olympic Park, located along the Black Sea coast in the Imeretinskaya Valley, is where all the ice venues are, such as the Bolshoi Ice Palace, the Maly Ice Palace, the Olympic Oval, the Sochi Olympic Skating Centre, the Olympic Curling Centre, the Central Stadium, the Main Olympic Village and the International Broadcast Centre and Main Press Centre. The mountain cluster in Krasnaya Polyana will be home to all the skiing and sliding sports. The mountain concept is a very compact one with only an average distance of 4km between the mountain subvillage and the venues. NBC will be broadcasting the games here in the U.S. Check your local TV listings for days and times of your favorite winter events.
The Carlsbad Marathon is a winter marathon and half marathon unlike any other. From the ideal weather conditions of sunny southern California, to the spectacular coastal Carlsbad course, this award-winning event will blow you away. It’s twenty-six fully staffed course support stations, continuous entertainment, and unsurpassed volunteer support are just a few of the outstanding features of this event. Cobian Flip Flops will be given to all full marathon runners, and each participant receives a gender specific long-sleeve technical fabric shirt, virtual goodie bag, spectacular finisher’s medal, post-race refreshments and much more. This boutique style event, with an emphasis on quality and individual service, sets it apart from other
mega marathons. These marathons will certainly sell out, so be sure to register early. Throw some sneakers on the kids and get them moving in the annual Kids Marathon Mile at Legoland! This Kids Marathon Mile is in conjunction with the Tri-City Medical Center Carlsbad Full and Half Marathon and takes place on January 18. Though the race is intended for kids 12 and under, anyone can participate. Moms, dads, and big kids are invited to join the fun in this non-competitive 1-mile run/walk through Legoland. The Carlsbad Marathon and Half-Marathon begin at the Westfield Plaza, at 2525 El Camino Real in Carlsbad. For more information call (760) 692-2900 or visit www. carlsbadmarathon.com.

It was recently announced that an all-new matchup will begin in 2014. The Poinsettia Bowl has already set its lineup of teams for the next six years, beginning in 2014. The Mountain West (MW) will continue as the anchor conference for the bowl game each year through 2019. Mountain West opponents during the 6-year term shall include Navy,

Davis Cup Match Between The U.S. And Great Britain At Petco Park January 31–February 2 The Oldest Rivalry in Davis Cup History will be renewed on a clay court at Petco Park and reigning Wimbledon Champion, Andy Murray, is expected to compete for Great Britain. Petco Park has been selected as the site for the 2014 Davis Cup by BNP Paribas first round match between the United States and Great Britain, January 31-February 2. The matches will be played on a clay court in a temporary stadium built in left field, which will have an expected capacity of approximately 8,000. It will be the first time Davis Cup is played in an openair baseball stadium in the United States and the first time the U.S. Davis Cup team hosted a tie on clay since the 1992 semifinals (U.S. def. Sweden, 4-1 in Minneapolis). The best-of-five match series begins Friday, January 31, with two singles matches, featuring each country’s No. 1 player against the other country’s No. 2 player.
Saturday’s schedule features the pivotal doubles match, and the final day of play on Sunday includes two “reverse singles” matches, where the No. 1 players square off followed by the No. 2 players going head-to-head. All matches are best-of-five sets until one country wins three matches. The United States-Great Britain rivalry is the oldest in Davis Cup history, dating back to the first competition in 1900, when the U.S. defeated Great Britain in Boston. The U.S. holds an 11-7 record against Great Britain in Davis Cup play, winning the last four ties. Great Britain’s last win in the series came in 1935. The 1999 first round tie was the only meeting between the two nations under the current World Group format. Founded in 1900, Davis Cup is the world’s largest annual international men’s team competition with 123 nations competing in 2014. For information or tickets, visit www. usta.com/daviscup or www.daviscup.com.
