This Edition of the North County Sun is Dedicated to Aaron Loy By Andy Lee A quote from National Best selling Author, Anne Lamott, is “The two best prayers I know are help me, help me, help me, and thank you, thank you, thank you.” Whenever I, or someone I know gets sick or is in a bad situation I find myself asking for help. And contrary to that, whenever something good, great, or miraculous happens, I find myself saying “Thank you.” This was the case when I found out that 18-year old Carlsbad resident and recent La Costa Canyon High School graduate, Aaron Loy, had contracted an extremely aggressive strain of Neisseria Bacterial Meningitis during his third month as a UCSB freshman. I’ve known Aaron’s parents since their UCSB days up in Santa Barbara, before they were married, and recently had the pleasure of
attending Aaron’s high school graduation ceremony and party. Life sometimes throws us curve balls, but as a par ent, I know the worst nightmare is having something bad happen to our children. Without getting into too much detail, the more news I kept getting about Aaron’s life threatening condition the more I was stressing out and praying for help. All I knew was that the situation was very serious and that his life was in danger. I was a total mental mess for two weeks. Weeks later, when I found out that Aaron had a good chance of survival, I found myself saying “thank you, thank you, thank you.” Thanks to Aaron’s fast thinking school mates, countless doctors, surgeons, nurses and miracles, Aaron has pulled through; but in the aftermath of this deadly disease, has lost both his legs. The Loy family is one of the most lov ing, and strongest families I know and has been cheering Aaron on from the sidelines, just as they’ve always done at Aaron’s countless soccer and lacrosse games. Aaron is a competitor, a fighter, a winner, and an inspiration to us
all. Eleven weeks later, after more than a dozen operations since November, Aaron was able to leave UCSD Medical Burn Center for Sharp Memorial Hospital for a rigorous rehabilitation program. After about three weeks of physi cal rehab and learning many new mobilization skills at Sharp, Aaron’s positive mindset and fighting spirit have allowed him to finally return home. I’m happy to say that Aaron is at home eating, exercising, and improving daily. Everyone is looking forward to the day (hopefully this coming fall semester) when Aaron will be able to head back north to resume his studies at UCSB. I am 100% confident that Aaron will overcome any obstacle put in front of him. He’s that kind of competitor and spirit. Let’s keep rallying together to give Aaron the best fighting chance so he can compete with the best of them, and help Aaron get the best prosthetics and care that’s available. Please read about Aaron Loy’s story on www.HelpHopeLive.org and please make a donation. Any amount will help. Thank you, thank you, thank you!

Feel Great Look Great Inc. Foundation is a Home Run! Foundation and Padres Team Up to Help Chemo Patients Get Assistance to Purchase Wigs–Purchase Tickets Now! Cathy Ketchum, Founder and Director of “Feel Great Look Great Foundation, Inc” and owner of The Headquarters Salon and Wig Store in San Marcos, is making her life dream come true. Partnering with the San Diego Padres, “Feel Great Look Great, Inc” has purchased group tickets from the San Diego Padres at a discounted rate and is reselling them to help raise desperately needed money for the foun dation that helps chemo patients purchase quality wigs so they can feel better by looking their best with dignity while going through and after chemo therapy. You will make a tax-deductible donation to “Feel Great Look Great, Inc” when you purchase tickets to see the San Diego Padres play the Detroit Tigers at Petco Park on Sunday, April 13, at 1:10 PM. When you call the foundation at (888) 519-3454 and order tickets to this game you will receive a tax-deductible receipt. A portion of the ticket sales will go to the foundation. The Headquarters was recently voted Retailer of the Month by Raquel Welch Wigs and is one of the best plac es in all of San Diego to get a wig or hairpiece, especially if you are a recovering chemo patient. Ketchum is an expert with wigs and styling hair and her specialty is working with chemo patients. It has been her dream to have a foundation to help patients that need help purchasing a wig. Cathy’s new 501(c)(3) charity foundation “Feel Great Look Great, Inc” does just this. Chemo patients that need help with purchasing a wig can apply for financial
assistance and the Foundation board will consider every application and quickly advise patients of its decision. As far as Cathy knows, this is the first foundation of its kind. Cathy and her foundation are just starting up, so if you can, please make a tax-free donation to help chemo patients look their best while going through the process. Some patients need better quality “real hair” wigs that last through washing and maintaining for two years or longer. Experience really matters in this business. Ketchum began working with wigs in East Lansing Michigan in 1975. She opened her first Headquarters Salon in San Marcos on Rancho Santa Fe Drive in 1985, and just recently opened a new, beautiful 2,700 square-foot salon and wig store in San Marcos on North Twin Oaks Road near Hwy 78, across the street from the US Post Office. The wig store carries synthetic and human wigs and hairpieces by Sherri Shepherd, Jon Renau, Raquel Welch, and Eva Gabor and has a private consultation room. The Headquarters will find and fit you with the perfect wig. And because they are a full-service salon they will custom cut your wig to perfectly fit you, and to make it even more natural, they will also color it to match your hair color or give it a perm. They have over 100 wigs on display includ ing a brand new line of wigs called “Now” for darker skin complexions by The View co-host, Sherri Shepherd. If you purchase a wig from them, they will cut it and customize

it at no additional cost...in a private consultation room. Headquarters specializes in working with chemo patients. Cathy says, “My whole heart is in the chemo side of the business. I just love my work so much. It’s not about the money.” By the way, the 501(c)(3) foundation is also accepting donated household items that are in good condition such as furniture, clothing, electronics, and kitchen items to resell at their new foundation retail store in San Marcos. Items purchased are tax deductible. Call (888) 519-3454. The Headquarters Salon and Wig Store is located at 405 N. Twin Oaks Valley Rd #114, San Marcos 92069. Call (760) 744-2911. Or call “Feel Great Look Great, Inc” for Padres tickets, donations, or information at (888) 519-3454.

Facebook Hell – Past Friends, Jealousy, Mistrust By Andy Lee Facebook is a process of putting friends together, some times hundreds or thousands of friends, where they can find love and attention. It’s a safe place for the shy, a place of interest for the weird and a virtual playground for the bored, inquisitive, or socially active. Facebook, with about a billion users worldwide, is a lot of fun and can be very addicting. It’s also the easiest way for finding information about someone. But its easy access can lead to relation ship problems with your husband, wife, boyfriend or girlfriend. Let’s face it, many of us have innocently checked some one out on Facebook, maybe someone you just met, an ex-girlfriend or boyfriend, an old high school friend, a co-worker, a neighbor, or a friend of a friend. This is all acceptable behavior, but what happens when your sig nificant other doesn’t like who you’re Facebook friends with and whom you are staying in contact with? There’s so much temptation to simply flirt or just comment on some one’s post or photo. It may be just a simple and innocent comment on a high school friend’s photo, e.g., “still a stud” or “looking fine” that can lead to a slippery slope of jeal ousy or discomfort with your significant other. Maybe you just want to reconnect with old friends. Perhaps you use Facebook as a way to be in contact with business clients or customers as a way to promote your business or let them to know about special offers or pro motions. But who you’re friends with on Facebook is a big problem with many relationships these days and can lead to uncomfortable feelings, heated discussions, resent ment, anger, arguments, break-ups and even divorce. But what are the rules about Facebook friends and where are we supposed to draw the line? When are we crossing the line by just keeping in contact with an old friend? Having a long lasting marriage or long standing trusting relationship with a solid foundation will help in the long Print Zone Entertainment 7040 Avenida Encinas 104-115 Carlsbad, CA 92011 info@NorthCountySun.com www.NorthCountySun.com Advertising Office (760) 635-9100 Fax (760) 635-9200

run when it comes to who you can or cannot be Facebook friends with. Marriage and relationships take a lot of work and open communication is the key. There’s no such a thing as a perfect relationship. According to an article on PsychologyToday.com/blog titled Communication Success, by Preston Ni, M.S.B.A, published October 7, 2012: “For some of us, trust is a complicated matter. Some people trust blindly. They are with someone who has shown time and again to be untrustworthy, yet they con tinue to give that person underserved chances. As the saying goes, ‘fool me once, shame on you; fool me twice, shame on me.’ To allow a chronically untrustworthy indi vidual to be one’s significant other is to create an inher ently insecure relationship, which may ultimately lead to disillusionment. Evaluate your partner’s trustworthiness based not upon unproven promises or wishful thinking, but on a strong overall record of dependability. While some people trust blindly, others have trust issues. Often due to negative experiences from the past, there are those who can’t trust a committed relationship, or the opposite sex, or people in general, or even themselves. In romantic relationships, they struggle to trust their partner, no matter how dependable the latter is. Here, of course, the trust issue is likely within oneself. Ask honestly wheth er the lack of trust is based on solid evidence or unjustified fears. If the answer is the latter, it may be beneficial to seek counseling and support, to allow oneself to trust appro priately again. Don’t allow fear push away a good man or woman in your life.” Well, that’s all good when it comes to trust, but were you aware that there are ways to cover your tracks from oth ers to see? In the Friends Activity Log you can refine your privacy settings by choosing who can see your Friends list and where your Friend activity will show up. Click the respective icons in the top right of the Friends Activity Log
and choose your settings. By deselecting every option for where your Friend activity can show up, you can effectively Friend someone and hide it from your status updates. There are tons of scenarios of friend problems in regards to Facebook. Take this example for instance: Cheryl is in the entertainment industry and has over a thousand Facebook friends because she uses Facebook mostly for business contacts but also for close relation ships and family. Some of her FB friends are famous musi cians. She’s been living with her boyfriend for a couple of years, but he too is in the entertainment business and has lots of FB friends including lots of beautiful looking female friends, and he’s on the road a lot. Cheryl is some times uncomfortable about some of his comments and “likes” he receives or gives to some of his friends’ posts and photos. Cheryl is uncomfortable with some of his comments and some of his Facebook friends. So, is it okay for him to stay in contact and Facebook flirt with some of his Facebook hotties? Should Cheryl just step back, have complete trust or just chill out? This is the world of Facebook now and it’s a new world of friends, relation ships, temptation, and trust. So, bottom line is that there really aren’t any Facebook “friend” rules either on Facebook or anywhere for that matter. If you want to take a chance and be “friends” with your old friends, or “exes” and continue interacting with them, go for it! But if you do, be prepared to pay the con sequences. If your current relationship is not yet strong enough to overcome trust issues, then it is probably wise to have a discussion about Facebook friends and exes and together try to come up with some kind of understanding. Facebook is amazing and helps us stay connected with people from our past and present; but its temptations can also have a negative effect on the strongest of relationships and marriages.

El Agave is opening their latest El Agave Restaurant and Tequileria upstairs at Del Mar Plaza. With sweeping Pacific Ocean views, it is the perfect setting to experience the true flavors of Mexico with their trademark Mexican Nouvelle Cuisine. Since 1966, they remain an award winning and must visit destination in San Diego. Known for its bold, authentic flavors, El Agave’s menu is inspired by the cooking styles of ancient Aztec and Mestizo cultures. Popular menu items include a variety of mole sauces blended from flavors native to Mexico with ingredients of Spanish and Arabic orgin, crispy chalupas, tamales, enchiladas and their infamous filet mignon with a tequila and red wine reduction sauce. Open for lunch, happy hour, and dinner, enjoy a wide assort-
ment of authentic hand-made Mexican tapas while sipping on one of their rare or premium 2,000 different tequilas from their tequila museum. Their tequila museum is extraordinary. El Agave Restaurant and Tequileria has received numerous awards including Best Mexican Restaurant and Best Mole by the Union Tribune, New York Times, and Estilo Gourmet, and their tequila has been 100% Certified with the highest award of 5-Agaves by the Tequila Regulation Board. The buzz around break rooms at work and Bressi Ranch kitchen tables is all about the new Fish District fish and alehouse that recently opened in Bressi Ranch, Carlsbad, just off Palomar Airport Road in the Stater Bros/Trader Joe’s shopping center. There are two reasons why the Fish District is a real winner and will be here for a long time: fast service and quality fish. They understand the need to take and fill orders really fast because they get a big clientele from all the nearby local businesses, and working people are generally in a hurry for lunch. On the flip side, quality and taste are key, and this place hits the mark. Off the grill, their recipe is easily broken down: 1) Select type of dish–sandwich, taco, wrap, or plate; 2) Select type of fish. That’s it! We tried the Mahi Mahi plate (shown in photo) and it was served to us within minutes. The taste was absolutely deli-
cious and the texture was perfect. We also tried the Lemongrass Shrimp Soup and their Simple Green Salad. Both were excellent! The salad dressing was a delicious miso-ginger vinaigrette. Depending on the season you can order grilled snapper, salmon, mahi mahi, halibut, wahoo, ahi tuna, shrimp, and sea bass. Other menu items include Ahi or Salmon Poke, Shrimp Ceviche, Fish and Chips, Skirt Steak Sandwiches, Steamed Clams, an assortment of starters, soups and salads, sides of coleslaw, rice, quinoa, fries, roasted cauliflower, ratatouille and desserts. Check their daily board for beers on tap, wine, and specials of the day. A kid’s menu is also available. The Fish District is located at 2675 Gateway Rd #102, Carlsbad 92010. Other days and nights of the year she will be busy preparing and serving a seasonal menu that changes throughout the year. The winery is a wood barrel room with fermentation tanks, crusher and press. Adjacent to the winery is a full kitchen, bar and dining room. Perhaps the most interesting piece is the long concrete outdoor fire pit bar that seats up to 20, located just inches from the sidewalk and passers-by. Join their
Wine Club and get 20% OFF all wine purchases and invitations to all their events. Dining guests get 10% OFF any bottle of wine purchased or 15% OFF 6 bottles or more. Rita’s Italian Ice
GET A FREE RITA’S ITALIAN ICE! Clip their coupon from our coupon page and buy one, and get the second one free! Must present coupon at time of purchase. Rita’s in Carlsbad is the first in San Diego, but many are slated to open soon, including a new location in Encinitas. Rita’s, the nation’s largest Italian Ice concept with roots in Philadelphia dating back to 1984 when a Philly firefighter opened a small Italian ice business to augment his income, has opened their first franchise here in Carlsbad. The business is named after the firefighter’s wife. Rita’s Italian Ice is made fresh daily with chunks of fresh fruit added. Their Italian Ices are fat free, cholesterol free, and trans-fat free and offer more than 65 flavors. 10 flavors of sugar free Italian Ice sweetened with Splenda are also available. Some new flavors to look for are Sugar free Dragonfruit, two new Starburst Flavors, and Jelly Belly. Cherry and Mango flavors are always on the menu due to popular demand. Other flavors are switched depending on the season and availability. The traditional Gelati with Mango Ice mixed with Vanilla Custard is our overall favorite. It’s
absolutely addicting! They now offer new milkshake flavors such as Caramel and Peppermint. Their Cream Ice is a richer, creamier version of the Italian Ice and is 98% fat free. Custard is a signature treat that is creamy and is offered in Vanilla, Chocolate, Orange Cream, Coffee, and Strawberry. Served in a cup, toppings like caramel and hot fudge can be added. Misto is a combination of flavored Italian Ice and Custard blended together as a drink. The Gelati is their number one selling treat. It’s a layering of Custard, then Italian Ice and topped with Custard. A Blendini is a personalized crunchy blend of Italian Ice, crunchy additions like Snickers, Oreo and Custard all blended together! Other frozen treats include Cookie Sandwiches and Custard Cakes. All are made fresh daily and never refrozen so the taste is fresh and delicious. 20% discount is offered to Military and Firefighters. Eat inside or enjoy their covered outdoor patio (La Costa location) on a warm spring day. The Broken Yolk Café is open 365 days a year including all holidays from 6am to 3pm. It’s one of the most popular breakfast and lunch restaurants in San Diego. They provide great food, great service, and great prices. Consistency in their food and service is what makes this place a true winner. It’s what everyone has come to expect time after time. All of their omelets are super large size meals. Between $9.49 and $9.99 you can build your own 4-egg omelet with a selection of cheeses and as many ingredients as you like. They are famous for their omelets. The No Name Omelet is one of our favorites. It’s a huge four-egg omelet stuffed with bacon, avocado, and mushrooms. You can top this with sour cream and salsa (shown in photo). For something truly healthy, try their fresh fruit bowls. We’ve never seen such gigantic fruit bowls anywhere else! They have a great early bird breakfast menu for only $4.99 served every
day of the week from 6am to 8am. Their Iron Man and Iron Woman Special is a 12-egg omelet filled with mushrooms, onions and American cheese, smothered with their own house-made chili and more cheese. Pelly’s Restaurant and Fish Market
Over the years many families have been turning to a healthier lifestyle and eating more fish. Pelly’s fresh fish market and seafood restaurant offers locals and visitors the freshest fish in town. It’s fresh, fast, and delicious! Pelly’s is one of the original fish markets in Coastal North County. On any given day, depending on the season, Pelly’s offers large fillets of ahi, yellowtail, albacore, mahi-mahi, halibut, Atlantic salmon, swordfish, sea bass, and a wide assortment of local shellfish including local oysters, clams, and mussels and lobster when in season. Buy fresh fish from their market and take it home or order grilled fish and eat it there. The Poinsettia Village Shopping Center, home of Pelly’s Fish Market, just completed renovating Pelly’s outdoor patio. It’s now more spacious and more beautiful than ever before. Enjoy a warm spring day or evening and a great seafood meal under an umbrella while watching people walk by.
Pelly’s offers Seafood Platters that will suit any Superbowl, NCAA Final Four game or Easter Sunday family brunch. Pelly’s has a reputation as the best place for delicious fresh fish lunches and dinners, especially their char-grilled mahi-mahi, char-grilled halibut, and of course, their unbelievable crab cakes and grilled fish tacos. Their fish sandwiches are to die for! If you’re in the mood for a salad, have their fresh ono salad, ceviche, bay shrimp salad or their stone crab salad. We highly recommend their famous Manhattan red or Boston white clam chowder. Pelly’s is not a fancy, sit down restaurant, but the quality of their freshly prepared seafood more than makes up for it. Their prices are very reasonable. Check the board for their Catch of the Day. Pelly’s Fish Market is open 7-days a week. They are located in the Poinsettia Village Shopping Center at 7110 Avenida Encinas #101, Carlsbad CA 92011. Call (760) 431-8454 or visit www.pellysfish.com.
We can’t wait! Vigilucci’s Restaurant Group is expanding, remodeling and relocating its popular Vigilucci’s Trattoria Italiana. “It was almost 20 years ago that we opened the Trattoria, and introduced North County San Diego to the food and culture of my hometown,” says restaurant owner, Roberto Vigilucci. “It pleases me that, after all these years, the public’s appetite for the authentic Italian cuisine we serve continues to grow and thus our need to expand.” Moving to 530 N. Coast Hwy 101 on the corner of Athena St. in Leucadia, the new location will provide the space needed to better accommodate the growing number of private party requests while enhancing its charming, intimate ambiance. A major transformation to the property, formerly operating as Robbie’s, is underway, with the Trattoria unveiling its new look in March. This Valentine’s Day the executive chef team at Vigilucci’s will offer a selection of special prix fixe menus and a la carte choices to create the perfect lunch or dinner. Bruegger’s Bagels
Bruegger’s will be open Valentine’s Day, St Patrick’s Day and Easter Sunday Try a Bruegger’s Breakfast Sandwich for the perfect way to start your day. Their classic breakfast sandwiches combine eggs with your choice of peppered bacon, ham, sausage or turkey sausage on a hot fresh bagel. We recommend trying their Better Cheddar Sandwich. This delicious sandwich comes with an egg patty with cheddar cheese, peppered bacon, and light garlic herb cream cheese on a fresh baked bagel, toasted if you wish. Of course, our all-time favorite is their classic smoked salmon and cream cheese on a fresh bagel with tomato, red onions and capers. Yum! Clip their coupon from our coupon page or from their ad on page 3 and get any bagel and cream cheese and small cup of coffee for only $2.49. Bruegger’s now has a delicious new breakfast egg sandwich called Chimi Cheddar. It’s a really delicious sandwich with egg, peppered bacon, green peppers, and cheddar cheese on a plain bagel. The Chimichurri sauce really makes this sandwich special. The zesty sauce contains a mixture of Jalapenos, lime juice, olive oil,
onions, thyme, parsley, cilantro, garlic, and red wine vinegar. The flavor is subtle at first, but the more you eat, the better it gets. Guests that watch their calories can now order any of Bruegger’s 15-plus varieties of “skinny,” due to Bruegger’s unique slicing process. Instead of changing the recipe of its time-tested, New York-style bagel, Bruegger’s slices the bagels thinner using a process that removes approximately one-third of the bagel’s center but preserves its unique eggshell crust and delicious toppings. The result is a lower calorie bagel without sacrificing variety or taste. Another healthy choice is their Skinny Zesty Egg White Sandwich. This comes with an egg white patty on a skinny sesame bagel, with turkey sausage, Swiss cheese and sundried tomato spread. Bruegger’s operates 300 bakeries in North America. Renowned for its award winning bagels, Bruegger’s offers a wide variety of freshly prepared breakfast and lunch options made with high quality ingredients served with its unique brand of hospitality. Visit www. brueggers.com.
Carlsbad Ranch Market
This Valentine’s Day and throughout spring, you’ll fall in love at Carlsbad Ranch Market because it’s fresh, locally grown strawberry season! Carlsbad has cases, flats, and baskets of large, sweet, ripe and delicious locally grown strawberries. Another wonderful seasonal fruit that you may not know about is their very sweet Ugly Tangerines. They don’t look pretty on the outside (kind of ugly) but inside you’ll find deliciously sweet tangerine fruit full of vitamin C! March means it’s time for NCAA March Madness basketball. We highly recommend Carlsbad Ranch Market’s daily homemade Mexican Tortilla Dip, Guacamole Dip, and Fresh Salsas along with their huge assortment of locally made Tortilla Chips. Carlsbad Ranch Market is an indoor fruit and vegetable stand and much more. There isn’t a salad bar around that compares to the price
and selection of their hot and cold salad bar. Daily made delicious soups, tortilla pie, lasagna, pastas, rice dishes, hot vegetable dishes and cold salad bar items are sold by weight. Buy a little or pile it on; either way, it’s so hard to hold back when you see their amazing selection. Carlsbad Ranch Market sells Julian Pies for a dollar less than the pies right from the Julian Pie Company Store. Julian Pie Company pies are fresh-baked and without preservatives, so you know when you buy one, it will be fresh. Pick up a few cans of San Marzano tomatoes for only $3.79. While you’re at it, check out their great selection of hard to find Lithuanian food products. Carlsbad Ranch Market is located at 6118 Paseo Del Norte, Carlsbad, CA 92011. Flower Fields New Orchard, Vineyard, Micro-Brewery, Winery, Project Approved Big changes are in the works for the Carlsbad Flower Fields. Plans include growing nuts, herbs and hops along with a grape vineyard and a tangerine tree and olive tree orchard. The Floral Trade Center on Avenida Encinas will become half trade center and half farm-to-table center with a micro-brewery, winery, and culinary school. The 44,000 sq. ft. Center will utilize products grown locally at the Flower Fields and will be served and sold on-site. Last September, the project was awarded over $1 million in grants from the City of Carlsbad for the first phase of the farm. The first phase includes farming plots, a 10,000 sq. ft. brewery and a 2,000 sq. ft. education center. Phase one of the project was approved by the Carlsbad Planning Commission on December 4, 2013, and has the green light to proceed, according to Commissioner Christer Westman. Westman says, “The property owner Carltas has sold the ownership of the Floral Trade Center and plans are in place for the Northern part of the (Flower Fields) property and has a conceptual agricultural based exhibition project with planting orchards and agricultural crops to be used for education, display, and sold on-site. Carltas has recently moved to a new location. The Floral Trade Center located on Avenida Encinas will continue conducting business in the mornings to the floral trade industry, but will be open to the public in the afternoons with a farm-to-table concept including an education and culinary center with kitchen products grown on site.” Along with the transformation of the Floral Trade Center, a portion of the north side of the historic Carlsbad Flower Fields will include a vineyard, a tree orchard, and other
agricultural crops. These crops will be used for education, and will be prepared, sold and served at the newly reno vated Floral Trade Center. Although this project has been given the green light by the Planning Commission, this is a big project and construction plans with building permits have not yet been approved and may take up to two years. Every year The Carlsbad Flower Fields transforms into a dazzling array of colors overlooking the Pacific Ocean. The Flower Fields offers the ultimate family experience, host ing a variety of activities and events. Attendees can enjoy a ride on an open-air wagon being pulled by an antique trac tor, visit the Cymbidium Orchid Greenhouse, or immerse your self in the fragrant Sweet Pea Maze. With over 50 acres of extraordinary beauty, The Carlsbad Flower Fields offer a unique opportunity for adults and kids to enjoy a day together among fields of color. The painters will depict the landscape; the coast from La Jolla to Encinitas, as well as the lower portion of the lagoon to the upper portion of Volcan Mountain. Their plein-air paintings, as well as studio works derived from field studies, will comprise more than 100 paintings for sale in this contemporary exhibition, with a portion of the proceeds benefiting the SDRVC. For those who are unfamiliar, plein-air painters go out on location, set up easels and paint what they see: flowers, rock formations, canyons, rolling hills, riverbeds, bridges, landscapes, and seascapes. PAPA painters are committed to the tradition of working directly from life and exploring the timeless beauty around them. And that’s what the exhibi tion is all about: connecting with and appreciating nature.

Lux Art Institute Lux Art Institute is where you will see art differently and see it happen by watching their artists-in-residence at work. You see the artistic process firsthand and are able to engage with internationally recognized artists in a working studio envi ronment. The next two artists-in-residence are Marcus Kenny and Jarmo Mäkilä. Marcus Kenney – In Studio Until February 8 and On Exhibit Until March 8 Poverty, alienation, and social injustice are frequent themes in the multimedia works of Georgian painter and sculptor Marcus Kenney. His subjects, both humorous and macabre, suggest Southern Gothic dramas with folksy cross-cultural references. Kenney’s mixed media paintings and sculptures with found objects are well known and critically acclaimed. His masterful practice of collage techniques and assem blage are hallmarks of his oeuvre. Kenney’s narrative
works present a tumultuous clash of imagery reflecting America’s melting pot of culture and consider issues including consumerism, environmentalism, religion, mortality, identity, race relations, and authority. While in residence, Kenney will paint his interpretation of Bruegel’s Tower of Babel on a large scale 10’x 6’ canvas, as well as a few smaller works with characters and detailed scenes. As a regualr practice, he frequents flea markets, thrift stores, and garage sales to source materials and plans to search San Diego for indigenous ephemera to include in his work. Jarmo Mäkilä – In Studio March 20 – April 12 and On Exhibit Until May 24 Jarmo Mäkilä lives and works in Helsinki, Finland. He studied at the University of Helsinki’s School of Art and Design, and at the Finnish Academy of Fine Arts where he later taught for six years. The large-scale autobio graphical paintings of Jarmo Mäkilä reflect personal child hood memories and the mythology of his native Finland. Ritualistic scenes of boys playing cruel games are one of his favorite subjects. Mäkilä’s paintings examine the moment at which childhood ends and innocence begins to falter.
The artist allows boyhood memories to be interpreted through a thick layer of the pres ent in large-scale scenes express ing heavy tension. While Mäkilä’s works are auto biographical, their impact is universal in that they reflect good versus evil, as well as oppressive loneliness. While in residence, Mäkilä will complete a new painting and a series of approximately 14 clay boy sculptures as part of an installation he calls Survey Therapy, which he summarizes as, “A bouncing discourse between the past and the present.” Lux Art Institute is located at 1550 S. El Camino Real, Encinitas 92024. Hours are Thu-Fri 1-5pm, and Sat 11am5pm. Call (760) 436-6611 or visit www.luxartinstitute.org.

Through an incredible simplicity, the story of Circle Mirror Transformation captures the subtle changes in each of our lives that leads to complete metamorphosis. To Kill a Mocking Bird April 12–May 4

Nemorino des perately wants to marry the wealthy and out-of-his-league Adina and turns to an “elixir of love” in hope of winning her, spends all his money, and has to enlist to get cash for more. When the quack Doctor tells the village girls that Nemorino is suddenly rich, they all chase after him. A romantic comedy of Hollywood proportions with far more satisfactory results! Finish Chelsea’s Run at Balboa Park March 1, Saturday, 7:30am The 4th annual Finish Chelsea’s Run, in honor of Chelsea King, will take place in Balboa Park, on March 1 at 7:30am, where Chelsea loved to visit and where she prac ticed with the San Diego Youth Symphony. The event will feature a competitive 5K race and fun run/walk, family fes tival, children’s activities, team competition, entertainment and refreshments. In 2010, in the weeks following the passing of stand-out high school scholar and athlete Chelsea King, a handful of members of the San Diego running community were so affect ed by her loss that they asked some of their friends to meet one Saturday to finish the run Chelsea started on February 25 in Rancho Bernardo Community Park. Chelsea’s life was cut short by a heinous act in the midst of her training run on that day in that park. Word quickly spread and on the morning of March 20, 2010 more than 3,500 community members joined together to run and walk in solidarity with, and in honor of Chelsea, who they adopted as one of their own. The original grass-roots “Finish Chelsea’s Run” was such a moving and healing experience for the community that Kelly and Brent King decided to make it an official, annual tradition in San Diego hosted by the Chelsea’s Light Foundation, the orga nization they founded to make positive change for children. On March 5, 2011, more than 5,400 people participated in the inaugural Finish Chelsea’s Run 5K Run/Walk in Balboa Park. The annual run/walk is helping Chelsea’s Light Foundation be able to better protect California’s 9.3 million children through Chelsea’s Law, and to raise funds that to date have provided college scholarships to 21 amazing kids, each pow erful change makers in their own ways. In 2013, his surf photography web site amassed a quarter of a million individual photo views. “I’ve been planning the revamp of my surf photography website for several months,” Tracey stated. “I wanted a way to not only photograph the surfers, but also be able to tell their backstory. We’ll take those profiles a step further and
develop features on some of the riders because a lot of them have really interesting stories to tell about themselves. Some of the best surfers in the world call San Diego North home, and I want to tell their stories.” 760Surf.com features a com prehensive list of surf contests, and plans to report results and provide photos from contests. The site will reach out to various surf organizations to promote their events. LPGA Kia Classic Returns to Aviara Golf Club March 24–30, 8am The LPGA’s Kia Classic will be at Aviara Golf Club in Carlsbad from March 24 to 30. The inaugural event was held at La Costa in 2010, but had to move for one year due to the resort’s $50 million golf course renovation in 2011. After a year in the Los Angeles area, the Kia Classic returned to La Costa, then last year it moved to the Park Hyatt Resort’s Aviara Golf Club. The tournament will be played there again this year and will feature the world’s best female golfers. This is the fifth year for the event and the purse this
year is a whopping $1,700,000. The tournament will cover 72 holes. The charity chosen to benefit from this event is North County Solutions for Change homeless shelter in Vista. Rookie Hee Kyung Seo won the inaugural Kia Classic at La Costa as a sponsor exemption in 2010. In 2011, the Kia Classic was the stage for another breakout win as Germany’s Sandra Gal became a Rolex First Time Winner with her thrilling one-shot victory over eight-time LPGA Tour winner Jiyai Shin at Industry Hills Golf Club. Yani Tseng won in 2012 at La Costa. In 2013, Beatriz Recari,
known as the “Iron Woman” on the LPGA Tour for her consistency, used a gritty performance to hold off I.K. Kim in a two-hole playoff to win her second-career LPGA vic tory at the Kia Classic. Recari, who was bogey-free for the first three rounds at Aviara turned in three bogeys and one birdie in regulation including a bogey on the 18th where she missed a four-foot par putt. After her win, Recari admitted that her nerves were not nearly as calm as they were during her first LPGA win back in 2010. Tickets for the Kia Classic are now available at www. kiaclassic.com.

Sugar San Diego–Sweet Alternative To Waxing Crystal Vodka, (her real name!) owner and opera tor of Sugar San Diego in San Elijo Hills–San Marcos, specializes in the Art of Sugaring Hair Removal. Sugaring is an all-natural alternative to waxing that dates back thousands of years and used by the Egyptians. The simple process is great for Bikini/Brazilian, Arms, Legs, Face...the list goes on. This is how it works: Sugar paste is applied slightly warm, never hot,
so there is no risk of burning the skin. Hair is removed in the same direction as hair growth, not against the growth like traditional waxing. Alta Vista Botanical Gardens at Brengle Terrace Park in Vista Alta Vista Botanical Gardens was named to reflect the wonderful view that the site offers its visitors. It harmoni ously incorporates education, nature and art. Alta Vista Gardens has developed a new standard for botanical gardens. While holding true to traditional scientif ic approach to botanical gardens, and providing an interac tive, living classroom for North San Diego County students, the gardens take a new approach to creating a completely new interpretation of what a botanical garden can become. As the gardens have continued to be developed, plant enthusiasts have been thrilled at the wide variety of rare, beautiful and remarkable plants which are showcased in the gardens. For everyone else in the community, there are equally compelling reasons to come to the gardens. Rather than taking the conventional approach of creating just another living plant museum, this garden has become a gathering place for the community and is both a certified Wildlife Habitat and a Butterfly Habitat. One key attraction
of the garden is the integration of art throughout the project, giving artists a magnificent showcase to display their tal ents. From garden art to sculptures, to walkways and walls, created by some of the area’s most talented artisans are on display. Along the trail systems, throughout the garden, are multipurpose platforms, which act as way stations for visi tors. These platforms eventually will play host to a multitude of events in the garden, such as fine art shows, culinary events, the performing arts, as well as Tai Chi and Yoga. The goal of the garden is to leave no stone unturned in the quest to “Bring Together People, Nature and Art”. From Route 78 take the Vista Village Drive exit and travel North. Vista village Drive changes name to East Vista Way. Follow to Vale Terrace Drive and turn right. Continue past the Main Entrance and turn left at the Second Entrance to Brengle Terrace Park. Continue past the Senior Center and follow to the crest of the hill. Note: this road has been recently named Jim Porter Parkway and Google shows it
in it’s maps but the sign as you enter the park is 50’ from Vale Terrace.Turn left at the ‘Welcome, Alta Vista Gardens’ sign and left again.
