Geoffrey Cunningham, created as an ode to his hometown in a time of war. The work reflects upon a city living in the grey areas of conflict, unable to deny, and unwilling to accept, always somewhere between light and dark. Cunningham presents a painting installation in the OMA Parker Gallery that creates a quiet place of contemplation and remembrance for all the men and women of Camp Pendleton who have lost their lives in the recent wars. Free Family Art Day: Ship Building March 4 Inspired by the mixed-media nautical sculptures of John Taylor on view in the OMA Lobby, kids will use a variety of materials to create, decorate, name and float their own boats at the next Free Family Art Day on Sunday, March 4 from 1 to 4pm. All art activities and exhibitions on view are free to the public. Projects are designed to engage children of all ages. No art experience is required for the art activities. Healthy refreshments and kid-centric docent tours are provided. The Oceanside Museum of Art is located at 704 Pier View Way, Oceanside. For more information call (760) 435-3721 or visit www.oma-online.org.

Ghost Fleet February 25 – April 8 Striking in their detail, John Taylor’s miniature reproductions evoke the organic qualities of aging, decay and death. By combining the spontaneous use of materials, careful research and innovative patina techniques, Taylor’s works are at once timeless portals to the real and imagined past and frozen glimpses of some of the most revolutionary yet long-forgotten maritime vessels and airships. In the OMA Lobby, Ghost Fleet will feature a collection of mixed media ships created within the last five years. Penumbra: An Ode to Oceanside in a Time of War March 3 – June 3 In Oceanside, the war is never too far from home. Camp Pendleton has lost more soldiers to the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan than any other military base in the U.S. Still, after many wars and many lives lost, the city of Oceanside has no proper memorial to honor them, nor place for residents to take pause, mourn, reflect, and even release the weight of war. Penumbra is a simple gesture from Oceanside artist

Moonlight Stage Productions’ AVO Playhouse Tickets www.moonlightstage.com. The Mousetrap February 1-5 The Mousetrap, Christie’s celebrated murder mystery play, has been running continuously in England since 1952 making it the longestrunning play in history with more than 25,000 performances. The ingenious plot engages the audience from start to finish with a thrilling twist at the end. Everyone is a suspect when a group of strangers, one of whom is a murderer, descends upon the newly-opened Monkswell Manor in the midst of a snowstorm. Arriving on the scene is a police detective who uncovers lies and deceptions and reveals that everyone has hidden secrets. Jason Heil, returns to direct after having staged numerous critically acclaimed productions for Moonlight at the AVO including “Barefoot in the Park” and “Ring Round the Moon” among others. Little Women – The Musical February 16-March 11 One of America’s most beloved books soars to the stage in an exhilarating new Broadway musical, LITTLE WOMEN – THE MUSICAL. The story of the remarkable March sisters – Meg, Jo, Beth, and Amy – is based on Louisa May Alcott’s timeless tale about the power of family, friendship, and romance. The story centers on the March sisters growing up in Civil War America, and features a score that resonates with personal

discovery, heartache, and hope – the sounds of a young America finding its voice. New York Magazine raved that the show, which starred Sutton Foster as Jo, “embodies the passion and power of young minds.” The Broadway production opened in 2005 before going on national tour through 2006. Kathy Brombacher, Producing Artistic Director for Moonlight, will direct. Beau Jest March 22-April 8 Concluding the Winter Season is the hit Off-Broadway comedy that ran for nearly three years, BEAU JEST by James Sherman. This heartwarming story about a beautiful young school teacher begs the question: how far will you go to satisfy your parents? Convinced that her Jewish parents won’t approve of her non-Jewish boyfriend, the eager-to-please Sarah hires an actor to play the man of her dreams. As the family falls in love with her new “beau,” can she remember not to do the same? Moonlight Stage Productions is well known for its award winning productions on its two stages at the Moonlight Amphitheatre and the AVO Playhouse. The AVO Playhouse is located at 303 Main Street, Vista. For ticket information, call (760) 724-2110 or visit www.moonlightstage.com.

FOX TV’s So You Think You Can Dance Season 9 Auditions are Underway Interview by Andy Lee Auditions for So You Think You Can Dance Season 9 began January 5 in Atlanta then moved on to Dallas and New York. Upcoming auditions take place in Salt Lake City on February 23 and Los Angeles on March 2. FOX TV’s So You Think You Can Dance features aspiring young dancers as they compete by performing a variety of different dance-styles in an effort to win the title of America’s Favorite Dancer and a $250,000 cash prize. The extraordinarily talented dancers in the competition are challenged by various genres of dance, music and the choreography created for them by seasoned professionals. I sat down with the SYTYCD Season 8 dancers the very last day of their 32-city tour that ended here in San Diego. It appears that the TV show, followed by a long road tour, has taken a toll on America’s Favorite Dancers. What’s next as far as prospects and careers for the top ten remains to be seen. Andy – How many of you have been touring? Jess – There are ten of us and Missy and Nick are two alternates that we invited. And they’ve been great. I think it’s great for them because America didn’t get to see them dance as much. We also have understudies. Andy – I had the pleasure of interviewing you the first day of your 32-city tour and tonight is your last show. Melanie – It seems so long ago! I’m so excited. I’m super excited. I haven’t been this excited for a while. It’s going to be a fun one. Tonight there’s no pressure. I get excited but a lot of it is nerves. Ricky - It’s the last night and we’re going to kill it on stage. I’m not even stressing out about our bodies being sore or anything. Andy - After 32 cities, your bodies must be really sore. Are you all taped up? Ricky – Yeah, we’re all taped up and icing. Clarice – Our bodies are like dying, just worn out. The tour has taken its toll. Melanie – Our bodies are just telling us “no.” At the beginning of the tour we were all the way up here and fabulous, now we’re like eeeeeeeeee! “I don’t want to go that high anymore. I’m tired.” Clarice – But tonight will be a really memorable show, just like the first one. We just want to go out with a big bang and enjoy ourselves. And this time we’ll have everybody. For the first show we didn’t have Marco. He got hurt on the last rehearsal just before the tour and joined us a week and a half on the road. But the good news is that no one is injured right now. Andy - You did a lot of back-to-back shows in many different cities. Where did you sleep last night? Clarice –We slept on the bus. I slept well last night. Top six Season 8 dancers

Ricky: The rocking of the bus helps a lot. Melanie – I slept like a baby. I can sleep anywhere. Andy – Do you ever get nervous before a show? Jordan – I don’t really get nervous; I just get really cold before I go on stage. I get super cold and have to wear sweats and a jacket with a hoodie. Right before I go on stage I rip ‘em off real quick. Mitchel – Every show I get nervous. My heart beats fast. I start to sweat like crazy. I don’t know. It’s not that I’m scared. I just don’t want to mess up or disappoint the audience. Jess – For me I get anxious. I always wonder what the crowd is going to be like especially in different cities and cities that I’ve never been to. I’m always looking forward to the show. The adrenalin starts to kick in once the show begins. It’s show time. Just switch on that knob and let’s do it! Andy - During the TV show competition do you get to pick your dance routines? Are you assigned choreographers? Sasha -The only thing we got to pick out of a hat are the genres of dance. And that was like later on in the show. Before that, they just gave them to us. They handed them to us on the show. Whoever hires the choreographers for the show picked who they wanted to do a certain type of routine. Like Sonya would be selected to choreograph a jazz routine. Missy - There’s a lot of choreographers out there and they pick like whoever. Sasha - We don’t get a lot of say. Missy - All you can do is the best with what you are given. Nick - You can’t just change from jazz to something else. Andy – So what you are all saying is that there is a lot of luck involved in what genres of dance you perform and what choreographers you end up with? Missy - A lot of it is luck because the second week I got the “cha-cha” with a partner that’s a “free runner.” And obviously that’s going to be hard. I’m not a cha-cha dancer and he is a free runner. Wadie (Jones) runs and jumps off buildings! It’s out of our control, so a good percentage of it is luck.

“Canvas in the Round” Gourd Art by Encinitas Resident Grace Swanson February 1-26 The gourd art of Grace Swanson is on view throughout February in the lobby of the Encinitas Library. The gourds on display are carved, burned, dyed, painted and embellished. Gourds are grown in many shapes and sizes ranging from tiny “jewelry” gourds to very large ones used as drums. Even though no two gourds are the exact shape and are never perfectly round or symmetrical, there are some basic

shapes including apple, bottle, canteen, pear, snake and so on. Throughout history gourds have been utilitarian. They have been used as spoons, bowls, drums, and storage containers for water, wine, grain etc. Some of Grace’s gourds may serve a function as vessels and bowls, however, most of Swanson’s designs are meant to be appreciated as art. The exhibit at the library is free and open to the public. The Encinitas Library Lobby is located at 540 Cornish Drive, Encinitas. For more information call (760) 753-7376.

She’s so inspiring and brings the best out of people. Travis’s work is like crazy. Ha ha. Nobody has a brain like Travis. Andy – So tonight is your last performance. What are your feelings? Missy – I would say bittersweet cause we are all excited for what the future holds for us and we’re ready to move on. We’re a family and we truly all get along. It’s going to be sad and we’re all going in different directions. Some will be in New York. Mitch will be in Atlanta. Most of us will be in LA but still we’re going to have to make a conscious effort to stay in touch after tonight to get together and see each other again. Andy – Do you have any jobs lined up or are you just waiting to see? Jess – Tomorrow is a new day, pretty much for all of us. I’m planning on going back to New York and New Jersey area. Hopefully, I’ll land myself in a nice show. I’ve done a couple of Broadway shows before all this. I’m very happy to have that type of training and then using it. On Broadway, you’re performing for the person in the back row of the theatre, and in television you’re performing for somebody that’s two inches away. It’s a great learning experience about understanding audiences.

Ricky – I’m going to do a lot of commercial work and a little dancing. I was on a reality show in Atlanta called Real Housewives, and I’m a model for Chuckie underwear. Missy – A lot of us are teaching. Nick - Teaching and choreography is what really helps this show. For me, I don’t know about anyone else, but once this show is over, it’s almost just like another job and I’ll be back to unemployment tomorrow, and I’ll have to start looking (for work). Missy - Yeah, I mean there are possibilities, but for the most part I have some teaching jobs lined up, but when it comes to a job-job, it’s all up in the air. It’s a dancer’s life... very spontaneous. Andy - What is the first thing you are going to do after the show ends? Jordan – I’m going back home to L.A. tomorrow. Melanie – The first thing I’m going to do is go to China. The second thing I’m doing is moving in with Clarice and Ricky in L.A. Andy - Have they been talking about bringing you guys back next season? Melanie – Yeah, possibly as All-Stars; maybe opening the show. I don’t really know.

Andy – How about your dance outfits? Nick: Everything is picked out for us from style to choreographer. They have their ideas and they know what they want us to wear. They usually have really good ideas. You work with what you get. Sometimes it’s not the best, but the TV show is all that matters. Andy – So with all that luck of the draw, how lucky do you feel how it all turned out? Sasha – I feel extremely blessed. I don’t know about luck. Um, I don’t know, I’m just happy and very honored. It’s very overwhelming that a lot of people are watching and like jobs, of course, are going to be had, and offered to us, and so we make connections. It’s awesome! Andy – Who was your favorite Choreographer and why? Ricky –The person I absolutely loved working with was Tice. He’s just a trip. He’s so fun to have in rehearsals and his stuff is so free and you get to experiment. He’s the funniest person ever. The way he explains things is really touching. You understand what he’s expecting. Melanie – Travis and Manny were both of my favorites. I got to work with Manny twice and did a jazz piece with her.

If you are looking for flavor, comfort and style in a movie theater, look no further than Cinepolis in Del Mar and their newest location in La Costa/Aviara. Their fully stuffed leather-like reclining seats are extremely comfortable and each seat has its own little side table/tray with a service button to call for a server. Although, not all of their theaters are luxury cinemas. As the only West Coast venue for the exhibition Echoes of the Past: The Buddhist Cave Temples of Xiangtangshan, The San Diego Museum of Art features 14 objects from Xiangtangshan (pronounced “shahng-tahng-shahn”) and three related Northern Qi works of art. The exhibition traces the historical origins and tragic destruction of one of the earliest and most important Buddhist pilgrimage sites in China. Visitors to the exhibition experience an immersive digital recreation of the caves. Dyeing Elegance: Asian Modernism and the Art of Kūboku and Hisako Takaku February 18 through May 27, 10am-5pm The traveling collection of fashionable textiles in Dyeing Elegance: Asian Modernism and the Art of Kūboku and Hisako Takaku will be on display outside of Japan for the first time at The San Diego Museum of Art. Artist Kūboku

Takaku (1908–1993) and daughter Hisako Takaku perfected the ancient technique of wax resistant dyeing to create textile paintings, of which 71 obi, kimono, and other objects are on display. His works merged Japanese subjects with cubist and modernist styles, and he was the only textile artist who effectively transitioned from the Fine Arts circles of the 1930s through 1960s into the world of high fashion for Tokyo’s elite. His daughter Hisako is now one of the last living artists who preserves the knowledge of this painstaking dyeing technique, and her obi and kimonos continue to be among the most chic and sought-after in Japan. The San Diego Museum of Art is located at 1450 El Prado in Balboa Park, San Diego. For more information please contact (619) 232-7931 or visit www.TheSanDiegoMuseumofArt.org.

17th Annual shamROCK in the Gaslamp Quarter Featuring the Young Dubliners  We’ve Got Free Tickets!  March 17, Saturday, 2pm-Midnight It’s been 17 years since the birth of shamROCK and since lucky number 17 falls on a Saturday this year, shamROCK is destined to be the biggest Irish Celebration on the West Coast. This time around, over 20,000 Irish revelers are expected to hit the streets of the Gaslamp. The 17th Annual shamROCK, presented by Jameson and The Field, takes place on the most sacred party day of the year, St. Patrick’s Day, Saturday, March 17, from 2pm until Midnight. The Gaslamp is pulling out all the stops for this year’s Celebration as a 150-foot Irish Pub on the streets of the Gaslamp is recreated; the streets turn green with over 80,000 square feet of green artificial turf; and with a lighting extravaganza, the Gaslamp Quarter transforms into an urban, super chic version of the rolling hills of Ireland! shamROCK is the party of the year in San Diego, and this year it lives up to the “rock” in shamROCK with three stages of live entertainment. The Field Irish Stage

features the Young Dubliners, Irish Rock, Irish Punk Rock and other Irish favorites. Fifth Avenue and F Street features the new Electronica stage and will have the most sexy, crazy sounds to hypnotize you into an Irish haze. The third stage is located next to the 150-foot Irish pub and presents over 25 Irish River Dancers and your favorite San Diego and Los Angeles DJs. And, Dublin has nothing on “The Pub,” which has lots of beer and plenty of Jameson Irish Whisky to concoct your favorite St. Paddy’s Day libations. shamROCK once again takes place on 6th Avenue between E and G Streets, “F” Street between 5th and 7th Avenues, and G Street between 5th and 6th Avenues in the Gaslamp Quarter in San Diego. Tickets to shamROCK are $35-$45, and a wristband gets you special privileges. Don’t test your luck. Get your tickets now, as shamROCK has sold out the last three years. 4/22 Y & T featuring Dave Meniketti 8pm $20 Before Mötley Crüe, before RATT, even before there was a Metallica, Y&T was slogging away in sweaty rock clubs around America. When the band formed in the early 1970s, little did they know they would set the standard for hard rock bands. Y&T is one of the San Francisco Bay Area’s own innovators of the hard rock sound. World-renowned headliners on their own, the band also remained the most requested support act on the hard rock road, touring with icons Ozzy Osbourne, AC/DC, Aerosmith, Mötley Crüe, and more. 9/15 Adam Ant The Good, The Mad, and The Lovely Posse 7pm Ant was a star in America where he not only scored a string of hit singles and albums, but was once voted sexiest man in America by the viewers of MTV. He is also an actor, having appeared in over two dozen films or television episodes between 1985 and 2003. Since 2010, Ant has undertaken a major reactivation of his musical career, performing live regularly in his hometown London and beyond, recording a new album and with a UK national tour now completed. His present comeback continues and thrives!

The 8th Annual La Jolla Concours d’Elegance returns to La Jolla Cove to showcase fine collector automobiles on April 1, Sunday, from 9am to 3pm. Spectators traveling from far and wide can view their favorite classic cars, Italian and British cars, woodies, 50s classics, American muscle cars, and the automobiles of Carroll Shelby. Keith Martin returns as the emcee to present awards recognizing winners in a variety of categories, including cars on the Saturday Motor Tour, Concours specialty classes, and special awards such as the “Keith Martin Award,” the “Director’s Choice Award” and more. Two events precede the Concours itself, on Friday and Saturday, March 30 and 31. On Friday, guests are treated to a book signing and on Saturday there is a guided motor tour of San Diego. Ever since it was first produced by the La Jolla Historical Society, the Concours continues to grow. The steering committee recently voted unanimously to change the

A little bit of “Puppy Love” can go a long way to help make this year your healthiest and happiest year ever. Grab a leash and your running shoes for the third annual Puppy Love 5k Run and 1 Mile walk, benefiting Helen Woodward Animal Center, on February 12. This year there are two separate courses for runners and walkers (and their four-legged friends) along scenic Highway 101 in Solana Beach. The event, sponsored by Iams and Roadrunner Sports, also features the Wagging Wellness Village, with vendors, food, prizes and activities. “This is such a fun event. It’s not often that people can run or walk a race with their four-legged friends,” said Nedra Abramson, Special Events and Sponsorship Manager for the Center. “Whether you’re a longtime runner, starting a fitness program as a New Year’s resolution, or you just enjoy taking a morning walk with your dog, you will have a blast at this event. And it’s all for a good cause. Proceeds benefit the programs of Helen Woodward Animal Center.” Celebrity Grand Marshalls include Raoul Martinez from FOX 5 San Diego leading the Run and Surf Dog Ricochet leading the Walk. The race begins at 8am on the corner of Via de la Valle and Highway 101 in Solana Beach, and the festivities last until noon. After the race, runners, walkers and spectators can take part in the Furry Valentine Canine Costume Contest as well as Doga Yoga, canine agility with San Diego Pet Training, and mini classes from Pure Barre La Costa. Dog lovers looking for the “right person” for them and their dog to love this Valentine’s Day can also participate in “meet your furry match,” a fun match-up sponsored by It’s Just Lunch. The race entry is $35 for both runners and walkers and all proceeds from the event support the pets and programs of Helen Woodward Animal Center. LPGA Kia Classic at La Costa Resort March 19-25 If you are looking for some great golf, the LPGA’s Kia Classic will be played once again at the La Costa Resort and Spa in Carlsbad. The inaugural event was held at La Costa in 2010, but had to move for one year due to the resort’s $50 million golf course renovation in 2011. The tournament, which features a 144-player field, is from March 19-25. “We are excited to return to the newly renovated La Costa Resort and Spa for the third edition of the Kia Classic,” tournament director Dennis Baggett said. “The Southern California region, and San Diego in particular, has been a longtime supporter of the LPGA Tour, and we look forward to bringing the world’s best female golfers back.” Due to a $50 million renovation project that has taken place at La Costa over the past year, the 2011 Kia Classic was moved to Industry Hills Golf Club at Pacific Palms in the City of Industry, Calif. After a year in the Los Angeles area, the Kia Classic is back at La Costa, and will feature the world’s best female golfers battling for a $1.7 million purse. Tournament week will feature a qualifier, practice rounds Monday and Tuesday, a Wednesday pro-am and four competitive rounds from Thursday-Sunday. La Costa Resort and Spa, home to one of golf’s iconic venues, has renamed its two 18-hole layouts – the Champions Course and Legends Course. The new Champions Course, the former North Course, has undergone a complete restoration. It is now paired with the Legends Course, formerly the South Course, on which four holes have been renovated. Current LPGA Tour rookie Hee Kyung Seo won the inaugural Kia Classic at La Costa as a sponsor exemption in 2010. In 2011, the Kia Classic was the stage for another breakout win as Germany’s Sandra Gal became a Rolex First Time Winner with her thrilling one-shot victory over eight-time LPGA Tour winner Jiyai Shin at Industry Hills Golf Club. Tickets are available at www.kiaclassic.com.

We’ve outgrown our old name, yet we’re still a show for and by our ‘car guys’ – we’ll be honoring restorers again this year.” The event takes place at Ellen Browning Scripps Park in La Jolla. Ultimate Boarder Barrels into Town March 17-24 Ultimate Boarder is the world’s only triathlon that challenges the best crossover amateur and professional athletes from surfing, skateboarding and snowboarding. Fifty athletes compete for their share of the $150,000 prize purse, the largest in event history, with $100,000 going to the champion. The fifth annual triathlon kicks off on Saturday, March 17, with the snowboarding competition, returning to Bear Mountain, Calif., for the first time since 2009. The action continues on to Seaside Reef in Cardiff from March 19-23 for the surfing portion and finally finishes with skateboarding March 24 at the Del Mar Fairgrounds, where this year’s Ultimate Boarder Champion will be crowned. The event concludes with a live concert finale that evening.

Having awarded $300,000 in cash and prizes to date and now presenting the largest purse in history, Ultimate Boarder continues to raise the bar in search of the best crossover athlete in surf, skate, and snow. The event runs in an open format for solo entrants to compete in all three categories and, unlike any other boardsport competition, the individual with the lowest cumulative ranking across the three disciplines wins first place. The title of Ultimate Boarder has become highly soughtafter and the series has grown to become a well-respected entity within the action sports world. The event is open to the public. While the series takes place entirely in Southern California, fans all over the country and world are able to watch as broadcast and live streaming will take place.
