Moonlight Amphitheatre That’s Life: A Toast to Sinatra February 11 – 12 Frank Sinatra was the iconic voice of a generation and one of the greatest entertainers of all time. Celebrate his hits: Strangers in the Night, Fly Me to the Moon, All the Way, My Way, New York, New York and many more. Laura Ellis: In a Jazz Mood March 11 Laura Ellis transports you to a time when lyrics and melody reigned supreme and one note could change the whole mood of a song. Join Laura and her Jazz Noir band for an evening of vintage jazz, from your favorite melodies of the past and rarely heard musical gems including That Old Black Magic, I Could Have Danced All Night, The Heat Is On, Route 66, I’ve Been Kissed Before and many more. Jason Bishop April 16 As America’s hottest illusionist, Jason Bishop mystifies with stunning and original state-of-the-art magic, awardwinning sleight-of-hand, and one-of-a-kind grand illusions delivered with a totally modern energy and an outstanding rock soundtrack. One thing that distinguishes Bishop is his virtuosity. Each show features exclusive grand illusions and close-up magic projected onto a huge movie screen. Jo Dee Messina April 22 The multi-platinum, award-winning country singer and songwriter hits the Moonlight stage with a blend of her classic music, familiar hits and songs from her most recent album Me. With her descriptive storytelling, warm audience interaction and her beautiful voice, no country music fan will want to miss this unforgettable evening. The Intergalactic Nemesis Live-Action Graphic Novel presents Target Earth May 7 The Intergalactic Nemesis Live-Action Graphic Novel, one-of-a-kind all-ages show, is in its third touring season. Three actors, a Foley artist and a pianist perform all of the voices, sound effects and music while more than 1000 blow-your-mind comic book images are blasted onto a large screen. The premise of the show is simple: it is a period adventure story about a reporter, her assistant and a mysterious librarian as they face the most serious threat
Earth has ever known: an impending invasion of sludge monsters from the planet Zygon. Sister Act June 15 – July 2 Based on the hit Whoopi Goldberg film, Sister Act tells the hilarious story of Deloris Van Cartier, a wannabe diva whose life takes a surprising turn when she witnesses a crime and the cops hide her in the last place anyone would think to look — a convent! Under the suspicious watch of Mother Superior, Deloris helps her fellow sisters find their voices as she unexpectedly rediscovers her own. Well-Strung July 9 Well-Strung, a New York City based string quartet, derives their unique blend of vocals and strings by brilliantly fusing classical music with the pop music of today. From Taylor Swift to Beethoven, selections will be performed from the most beautiful and traditional melodies to irreverent “newly-observed “ chart toppers...and everything in between. Peter Pan July 20 – August 6 Broadway’s high-flying musical whisks you away to a place where dreams are born and no one ever grows up! Peter and his mischievous sidekick Tinkerbell visit the Darling children’s nursery late one night and with a sprinkle of pixie dust begin a magical journey across the stars. Featuring the dazzling sets and costumes of the famous Cathy Rigby production, the show will feature spectacular flying effects. Titanic the Musical August 17 – September 3 Maury Yeston’s riveting and haunting musical based on the worst nautical disaster in history (and not the movie), depicts the final hours of the real-life people who set sail on the “unsinkable” Titanic. Winner of five Tony Awards including Best Musical, Titanic celebrates the human spirit of the rich and the poor, the lovers, the heroes and cowards, for a theatrical experience that will stay with you long after the curtain comes down. The Addams Family September 14 – October 1 The Addams Family is coming to life in a new macabre musical comedy created by the authors of The Jersey Boys
and the composer and lyricist of Big Fish. Join Gomez and Morticia Addams for a morbid family gathering when daughter Wednesday brings home her “normal” boyfriend and his uptight parents. Chris Mann and Shoshana Bean October 8 Join Chris Mann, who rose to fame as a finalist on NBC’s The Voice, for a musical evening featuring songs from the Golden Age of Broadway, the Great American Songbook and his own chart-topping albums. Currently starring as the Phantom in The Phantom of the Opera National Broadway Tour, Mann has been hailed as “a bona fide breakout star.” New, up-and-coming Broadway star and recording artist Shoshana Bean is magnificent and stirring, always original, heartfelt, and quite funny. Since the release of her debut solo album, Superhero, it is said that Bean can match Barbra Streisand’s range and challenge Madonna’s style. Remember When Rock Was Young October 28 Remember When Rock Was Young stars singer/actor/ pianist Craig A. Meyer. He is considered to be the best Elton John tribute artist performing today. This spectacular show is a musical journey celebrating the decades of chart topping hits of Sir Elton John. Tim Hockenberry November 19 Tim Hockenberry is a multi-instrumentalist and songwriter and well-known as a gifted interpreter of wellknown cover songs. Hockenberry’s voice is reminiscent of Ray Charles, Joe Cocker and Tom Waits, but one only need to hear a few bars of his rendition of I Left My Heart in San Francisco to understand that he is an artist with a refreshingly authentic approach to songs. A Very Electric Christmas December 3 Lightwire Theater’s A Very Electric Christmas is a magical and captivating tale of family, friendship and hope performed in complete darkness and set to timeless holiday music. Lightwire Theater is known for its signature brand of dazzling visuals and storytelling incorporating a combination of dance, puppetry and technology. San Diego Musical Theatre
Welk Resort Theatre
Ragtime the Musical February 5 – 21 This sweeping musical portrait of early 20th century America tells the story of three families in the pursuit of the American Dream. Called by Time Magazine “A triumph for the stage,” and by the International Herald Tribune “the best musical in twenty years,” this acclaimed musical is filled with pageantry, emotion and hope, bursting onto the stage like no other musical. San Diego Musical Theatre performs at Spreckels Theatre located at 121 Broadway San Diego, CA 92101. For more information call 619-235-9500 or visit www.sdmt.org.
Fiddler on the Roof February 5 – April 24 Based on the short story Tevye and His Daughters by Sholom Aleichem, Tevye the milkman tries to protect his daughters and his way of life from a changing world. It deals with serious issues such as persecution, poverty and the struggle to hold on to one’s beliefs in the midst of a hostile and chaotic environment. Criticized at first for its “limited appeal,” Fiddler on the Roof struck such a universal chord in audiences that it became, for a time, the longest running production in the history of Broadway. Welk Resort Theatre is located at 8860 Lawrence Welk Drive, Escondido 92026. Call (888) 802-SHOW (7469) or visit www.welkresorts.com.
Old Globe Theatre The Metromaniacs Through March 6 In 18th-century Paris, young people like Damis have gone métromanie—crazy for poetry. Indeed, Damis has fallen in love with a mysterious poetess sight unseen, charmed by her verse alone. But unbeknownst to him, his beloved is actually a middle-aged gentleman named Francalou! This mistaken identity sets in motion a comedy of pseudonyms, plot twists, and plenty of playful poetry. The Last Match February 13 – March 13 The US Open tennis semifinals are underway. As Russian phenom Sergei Sergeyev and American superstar Tim Porter do battle under the lights on center court, Galina and Mallory, the funny and complicated women who share their lives, watch anxiously from the sidelines. But as
the action unfolds, we journey into the minds of the players and the lives of the two couples in a moving exploration of family, parenthood, and the legacy left behind. Rain March 24 – May 1 Based on the classic story by Somerset Maugham, the year is 1924, the setting a boarding hotel on the island of Western Samoa, where a missionary, a doctor, and their wives are scandalized by Sadie Thompson’s arrival, particularly when they learn what she does for a living. But when the missionary, with secrets of his own, acts to shut down her business and save her soul, more is about to heat up than the South Pacific sun. The Old Globe Theatre is located at 1363 Old Globe Way, San Diego. For more information call (619) 234-5623 or visit www.theoldglobe.org.

New Village Arts Theatre Emilie: La Marquise du Châtelet Defends Her Life Tonight February 13 – March 6 La Marquise du Châtelet was a mathematician, a physicist and the toast of the Enlightenment. So why then is the Marquise not better known? Perhaps Voltaire put it best when he said du Châtelet was “a great man whose only fault was being a woman.” Brought back from the dead, Emilie is determined to answer the questions that haunted her dying moments on Earth: “Was I right?” and “Was I loved?” As she travels back in time to revisit key moments in her scientific and emotional journeys, the full extent of her remarkably prescient legacy is revealed in this smart, surprising and sexy portrait of a true genius. Big River April 9–May 15 The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is one of the greatest creations in American fiction. This tale of adventure and self-discovery begins on a raft on the Mississippi River in the 1840s, where Huck, escaping from his drunken father, meets up with Jim, a runaway slave. The story of their journey downstream is an American classic that captures the rhythms, sounds and spirit of life on the big river. The New Village Arts Theatre is located at 2787 State Street, Carlsbad. For more information call (760) 433-3245 or visit www.newvillagearts.org.

Wasabi Sushi Restaurant
Tucked away in a quiet strip mall in the Shadowridge neighborhood of Vista, across the street from Rancho Buena Vista High School, you’ll find Wasabi Sushi Restaurant. Recently under new management, this unassuming Japanese restaurant is a very good choice for tasty and fresh sushi at reasonable prices. The quaint dining room with black tables and chairs and sushi bar is the perfect setting to enjoy freshly prepared fish of every flavor and variety. Wasabi Sushi is open everyday from 11am to 9:30pm. They serve a Daily Lunch Special for $11.95 that includes 1 House Roll, 1 Specialty Roll, Miso Soup and a fresh garden salad. Happy Hour is nightly from 3-7pm, and sports on TV is available at the bar. Waitperson Betsy was very helpful and made suggestions about the menu items, while Sushi Chef Ian was busily at work making his unique and tasty creations. The menu had some very nice
choices, including an assortment of appetizers, nigiri sushi, sushi rolls, specialty rolls, tempura, Udon noodles, a variety of bowls, salads, curry, and a bento box. I recommend the Vista Dreaming Roll with jumbo shrimp, cucumber, tuna, salmon, avocado, albacore, crab, crunchies, and drizzled with eel sauce. The Rainbow Roll was also very good. The smoked salmon and maguro nigiri sushi were delicious, the fish was very fresh, and the sushi rice was excellent. Many sushi experts say that the sushi rice is more important than the fish. Dining, Sipping, and Drinking Cucina Amore
Amore means LOVE, so why not take your loved ones to Cucina Amore on Valentine’s Day! The handsome and young owners and partners of Cucina Amore are real Italians and are passionate about their authentic Italian cuisine. Long-time friends, Clint Legnani and Juri Malini, born and raised in Bologna, Italy, first opened a gelato shop in Pacific Beach, which is still there and very popular. They have now opened their new Italian restaurant in San Marcos, right across the street from San Marcos High School. Their cozy Italian bistro prepares fresh, homemade, authentic Italian dishes that are absolutely delicious. These guys are always smiling, and I can assure you that you will be, too. Like us, you will love Clint and Juri, and Cucina Amore! They offer $2 OFF daily lunch specials until 3:00pm. Clip their BUY ONE – GET ONE FREE ENTRÉE COUPON (Dine in only) from our coupon pages or download from www. NorthCountySun.com/category/coupons/. Also, because they are located right across from the high school, they offer $2.50 slices. Their pizza is excellent.
Cucina Amore has an extensive menu that features delicious antipasti, Balogna-style thin crust pizza, wonderful pasta dishes, classic lasagna, specialita della casa (house specialties), soups, fine desserts, drinks and, of course, authentic cappuccino, and other coffees. Dishes are made with the freshest and organic ingredients whenever possible. All of their prices are on the lower end of the spectrum, which makes this place a real treat. We recommend their pizzas, and Spaghetti Bolognese with their homemade Ragu. Try it with meatballs! It’s absolutely delicious. Various pasta entrees include Cappellini Pomodoro, Ravioli di Ricotta, Fettuccine Afredo, Lasagna al Forno, Ziti al Forno, Gnocchi alla Bolognese, and others. For dessert, their Tiramisu, Sicilano, Panna Cotta, and their famous Gelato are all fabulous. Cucina Amore is located at 679 Rancho Santa Fe Road, San Marcos 92078. Call and ask them about catering your holiday party. Call (760) 304-6939. Located at the corner of San Marcos Blvd and Rancho Santa Fe Road. Visit www.cucinaamore.net.

Solterra will be open on Valentine’s Day for lunch from 12-5pm and for dinner from 5-10pm. There’s nothing better than sipping awardwinning wine and eating the finest cuisine prepared by San Diego’s cherished Executive Chef, Chris Powell, on Valentine’s Day at San Diego’s only working winery, tasting room, tap house, and kitchen. Solterra was the biggest winner at the 2015 San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition, the most prestigious and largest competition of American wines in the world. They won Best of Class for their Costa Azul-2012 Cabernet Sauvignon; Double Gold for their Christopher Cameron Vinyards 2012 Malbec; Gold for their Solterra Winery Mestizo “GSM;” Silver for their 2013 Pinot Noir; and Silver for their 2009 Petit Sirah. If the weather permits, enjoy their backyard vineyard patio, draped in grape vines with 18 tables. It’s exquisite. Just hang out and sip wine with family, friends, or your significant other. It’s also a great place to reserve for corporate or private parties. The Van Alyea family, a married couple with two young daughters and a lovely golden retriever, are answering the dreams of North County residents and visitors who love fine wine, craft beers, great food, and the SoCal beach lifestyle. Casa de Bandini
This Valentine’s Day, treat your special someone to a fiesta to remember and enjoy their famous Fiesta Buffet Menu. Diane Powers’ Casa de Bandini is a top North County destination for regionally inspired Mexican fare. This award-winning restaurant is decorated with hand-crafted furnishings, fine Mexican folk art, and colorful hand painted murals. Guests feel the warmth and romance of Mexico as soon as they enter and are charmed nightly by strolling mariachis playing popular Mexican ballads, making it a great place for entertaining friends and loved ones. Guests will enjoy frosty birdbath margaritas along with hot corn and flour tortillas prepared throughout the day. Indulge in authentic Mexican cuisine among beautifully decorated dining rooms and their spectacular outdoor patio. The freshest ingredients are used for their 14 salsas and sauces that are made daily along with their fresh, hot, handmade tortillas. Popular dishes include their flavorful Carnitas a
la Michoacan, succulent morsels of pork served with hot tortillas, guacamole, salsa and beans. Casa de Bandini also offers gluten-free, vegetarian and healthy dining selections. Chef Ignacio has prepared a number of authentic specialties including his famed Enchiladas Espinacas, Salmon Primavera, Taquitos de Tinga, Fish Tacos Sabrosas, and Churrasco Steak. The Churrasco Steak is a Certified Angus Beef steak, flame-grilled and garnished with cilantro-lime butter. It is served on a bed of roasted potatoes, with a side of frijoles de olla and ensalada primavera of fresh, sweet peppers, red onions, oranges, mangos, pineapple, and serrano chile in a lemon vinaigrette. Casa de Bandini offers banquet and catering. Diane Powers’ other fine Mexican restaurants include Casa Sol y Mar in Del Mar Highlands, Casa Guadalajara in Old Town and Casa de Pico in La Mesa. Casa de Bandini is open seven days a week and is located at 1901 Calle Barcelona, Carlsbad, 92009, in The Forum Carlsbad. Call (760) 634-3443 or visit www.casadebandini.com.
Bruegger’s Bagels
One of the most beloved bakeries in North County, Bruegger’s in La Costa offers delicious, piping hot, oven-baked bagels. Pick up a fresh hot blueberry bagel or onion bagel with cream cheese, a dozen hot bagels for the office, or a Bruegger’s Breakfast Sandwich for the perfect way to start your day. Their classic breakfast sandwiches combine eggs with your choice of peppered bacon, ham, sausage or turkey sausage on a hot fresh bagel. Our all-time favorite is their classic smoked salmon and cream cheese, stacked high on a fresh onion bagel with sliced tomato, red onions, and capers. In addition to their famous bagels, breakfast sandwiches and bagel sandwiches, Bruegger’s offers a healthier “Under 500 Calorie” menu. If you are a calorie counter, try one of their Skinny Bagels. Guests can now order any of Bruegger’s 15-plus varieties “skinny,” due to Bruegger’s unique slicing process. Instead of changing the
recipe of its time-tested, New York-style bagel, Bruegger’s slices the bagels thinner using a process that removes approximately one-third of the bagel’s center but preserves its unique eggshell crust and delicious toppings. The result is a lower calorie bagel without sacrificing variety or taste. Try their Skinny Zesty Egg White Sandwich. This comes with an egg white patty on a skinny sesame bagel, with turkey sausage, Swiss cheese and sun dried tomato spread. Catering is available. Clip their coupon from our Coupon Pages or download from www. NorthCountySun.com/category/coupons and GET A BAGEL W/CREAM CHEESE AND SMALL COFFEE FOR $2.49. Must present coupon. Bruegger’s operates 300 bakeries in North America with 7 bakeries in San Diego. Bruegger’s Bagels is located at 7680 El Camino Real, Carlsbad 92009 (at the corner of La Costa Ave and El Camino Real). Cruisin’ Grand has given people a reason to visit downtown every Friday night, and in the process it presents all that downtown has to offer including great restaurants, stores, boutiques, breweries, pubs, and live performance venues. idea. Steve used to cruise Valley Parkway on Friday and Saturday nights in the ’70s. Later, he’d go to the T-Bird Diner and think what a shame it was that the hot rods were parked instead of cruising. He started to think that “Grand Avenue was an exceptional street to have a cruise on, a street with great ambiance.” The City and Escondido Police Department quickly got on board and their support has been crucial to the success of Cruisin’ Grand all along. If you’ve never seen all the pure awesomeness of Cruisin’ Grand, this spring it all starts up again, so go check it out! For more info visit www.cruisingrand.com

Home Sellers Advisory Advisory #1: Beware of the “High Price” listing presentation. These agents have one goal and that is to get a signed listing contract by presenting an unrealistic high list price, and knowing that the seller will eventually have to lower the list price to sell their home. Two clever responses can help sellers mitigate this scenario. Advisory #2: Beware of the “Universal Phone Call” that goes something like this; “Hello, I have a buyer interested in buying your home, are you interested in selling?” Truth is very few of these solicitation calls have a specific buyer. If you answer yes to their question, then simply ask them to put their buyer’s name on a “single party” listing agreement, so your obligation to pay a reduced commission is only if that specific buyer buys your home.
Advisory #3: Beware of the “Great Promise”. These agents convincingly tell you that they list and sell most of their own listings, with no other agent involved . . . and because of this, they will lower the total listing commission from 5 or 6% to 3% when they sell your home themselves. The truth is, very few agents list and sell their own listings! This is easily verified by an MLS printout of SOLD listings that clearly shows the listing and selling offices involved in all the sales. Are they the same offices? . . . probably not. Advisory #4: Beware of a lower than normal commission posted in the MLS to “buyer’s broker”. While commissions are negotiable, money motivates sales people. Buyer’s agents typically expect a minimum of 2.5% for selling a median priced home . . . and they deserve it! If
less than 2.5% is proposed by your listing agent, ask them for an MLS printout of the listings for your neighborhood that will clearly show the commissions paid to other buyer brokers. Rarely will you see less than 2.5%. You want maximum agent motivation to sell your home by offering at least 2.5% to the buyer’s broker. This advisory to home sellers is provided as a courtesy by David Boe, owner and broker of Boe Real Estate; sharing 30-years of local broker experience from selling over 1,000 homes. David Boe personally handles all the negotiations and required paperwork. David Boe has saved his buyers and sellers thousands of dollars with reduced commissions to sellers and rebates to buyers. Imagine a Job That Allows You Financial Freedom By Enhancing Your Own Life and the Lives You Touch By: Dr. Noelle Zhang
I immigrated to San Diego twenty-seven years ago with my Doctor of Medicine, a Master of Science Degree, two pieces of luggage, $100 in my pocket, and an American dream. Working at different pharmaceutical companies in La Jolla helped me support my two children for over 20 years, but I was constantly struggling with balancing my career and family life. I didn’t have enough time at home to nurture and support my children, let alone allow quality time for myself. When my daughter left home for college eight years ago, I started searching for other income options, which led me to owning my own home-based business, and now I want to share my success with you and see if you’d like to join me. Everyday I wake up, I’m happy to be associated with a company that specializes in helping families use better and safer products in their homes. I want to tell you how to take control of your financial future by building a business that requires no overhead, no inventory, and no selling. You can start off small, like I did, but eventually it can become your primary source of income with unlimited potential. My mentor and team member, Heidi, is a San Diego mom. She used to be a pharmaceutical sales rep. Other team members are Dr. Ryan, a surgeon; Buck, a business owner; Stacy, a corporate executive; Angie, a mortgage broker; and Melanie, a single mom of three. They all do what I do now. No matter what your background, education level, or previous experience is, you can be successful by partnering with all of us, as long as you have the desire and a strong work ethic. I want to help and work with all of you, especially women who want to be able to spend more quality time at home with their children, like I did. If you want to work with a group of dynamic, positive, professional people, and be in a position to be able to balance your career and your family life, and be proud of being able to enhance other peoples lives at the same time, then please call me at (760) 814-1433 or email me at noelle_zhang@yahoo.com.

Save Hundreds or Thousands of Dollars By Having Dental Work Done In Tijuana By Andy Lee I have a very good dental plan, but it doesn’t cover gums, molar crowns, some root canals, bridges, etc. I recently cracked the porcelain of a 15-year old crown and it wasn’t covered under my dental insurance. I called a few San Diego dental offices and was quoted between $1,100– $1,500 for a porcelain over metal crown. I went online to look at dentist reviews, and found a dentist in Tijuana, Shirley Baker, D.D.S.. She was advertising permanent porcelain crowns for $320. I called her office and asked many questions. Her English-speaking receptionist convinced me that I should give it a try, and I’m glad I did! The next morning I drove to the border and parked my car on the U.S. side and walked across. It’s a bit of a
walk and you should bring a friend. The dental office had a yellow taxi waiting for me (no charge) The driver, Manny, spoke perfect English and in 5 minutes we arrived at the office. There was a coffee shop on the first floor lobby. I bought a latte. The elevator woman opened the elevator door and used her card and pushed the 3rd floor button for me. I opened the door and the office looked just as nice as any dental office in the U.S. and better than most. I filled out a detailed dental history form. There was a woman sitting next to me and told me her husband was getting a root canal and that they have been coming here for six years. They too live in San Diego. I was soon called in. Dr. Baker and everyone there spoke perfect English and were very professional. After an X-ray the doctor and
hygienist went to work. They gave me an iPod to listen to music. After removing the cracked crown she took another X-ray because she found a large cavity below the gum line under the old crown. She proceeded to remove the decay, filled the cavity, took an impression for a new crown, and gave me a temporary crown. I returned in 10 days for the permanent crown, and it looks more natural than my other two crowns. Total cost was $320 plus $50 for the filling. I saved over $1,000 and had one of the best dental experiences ever. Manny drove me back to the border (no charge, but I gave him a $10 tip). I saved over $1,000 and the experience was great. Here is Dr. Shirley Baker’s number (619) 270-2165. Please let them know you read about this in the North County Sun. Keep smiling!
Taking Care of Your Eyes is So Important San Dieguito Art Guild Show By Andy Lee
February and March
Sometimes we don’t pay enough attention if we have dry eyes, blurred vision, or easily get eye infections. Don’t take your eyes for granted and take the time to make an appointment with someone that has an extensive background in ocular diseases and conditions. If you are looking for a caring and professional optometrist, then I recommend Dr. Kristin Peterson- Salgado of Solana Beach Family Optometry. Dr. Kristin Peterson-Salgado graduated from the University of California, Davis in 1993 with high honors then went on and graduated from the University of California, Berkeley School of Optometry in 1997. For 14 years she has been practicing medically-based optometry with a focus on ocular disease, geriatrics, traditional and hard-to-fit contact lenses, diabetic exams, and Lasik or cataract surgery pre-operative exams. Dr. Peterson-Salgado opened her private practice in Solana Beach in 2010 with a desire to continue her medically based practice while also incorporating vision exams for the entire family. Dr. Peterson-Salgado enjoys fitting all types of contact lenses, including bifocal, monovision, rigid gas permeable, and astigmatic lenses. She also has an extensive background in the treatment of dry eye conditions. She is board certified in the treatment and management of ocular disease and can prescribe medications for eye infections, allergies, and dry eyes. San Dieguito Heritage Museum Museum Speaker Series February 9, 7pm Diane Welch will be guest speaker at the ongoing monthly Speaker Series. The event will be held at the Encinitas Community Center. Born in 1889 in National City, Lilian Rice was one of the few prominent woman architects in the San Diego area in the early 1900s. Her style echoed the Spanish Colonial Revival movement. In 1921, Rice was chosen to be the lead planner on the new development at Rancho Santa Fe. She designed many prominent buildings including The Inn at Rancho Santa Fe, the Rancho Santa Fe Garden Club, and many other San Diego area buildings and residences. Diane Welch is an awardwinning journalist/author and the leading authority on the life and work of Lilian Rice. Ask for her new book, The Life and Times of Lilian J. Rice, Master Architect. Families Make History Craft Program Saturdays and Sundays 12-4pm The Families Make History craft program is FREE. Crafts are geared for ages 4-12. The museum provides the materials; you provide the quality family time with your kids. In February, the craft will be weaving. While ‘store-bought’
clothing was available, weaving was a skill the early settlers used to create blankets and other warm items. March will be Music Month, with the craft centering on homemade musical instruments that local residents might have created to while away the chilly Southern California nights. Current Exhibit: The Paul Ecke Poinsettia Ranch Photographs and artifacts in the Ecke Poinsettia Ranch exhibition trace the Ecke story back to the early 20th century when the Ecke family settled in Hollywood, where tall willowy shrubs, that bloomed bright red during the holiday season, peppered the hillsides. Named poinsettias for Joel Poinsett, the first U.S. Ambassador to Mexico, who brought cuttings to the U.S. in the 1800s, Albert Ecke, Paul Sr.’s father saw the possibilities of the crimson shrub as a new crop for his farm. In 1923 Paul Sr. purchased prime coastal farmland in Encinitas for $150 an acre and moved growing operations 100 miles south from Los Angeles. Thus began a 90 plus year period that saw three generations of Eckes make their individual mark on the business. From 1923 through 1963, Paul Sr. perfected outdoor growing techniques, and intro-
duced a few varieties of poinsettias to a global market of flower growers. From 1963 to 1991, Paul Jr. changed operations from field grown to greenhouse grown, began a focused poinsettia breeding program, and helped cement the place of the poinsettia as the holiday plant through placement in the White House and on prime time TV shows. Barbara Grice, Executive Director of the Heritage Museum said, “We are honored that the Ecke Family has chosen the Heritage Museum for this exhibit of their family’s story, which is so closely intertwined with the history of Encinitas. This is the first time that the Ecke Ranch story has been assembled in one exhibit, and we hope that local residents will stop by to learn more about the premier flower grower in Encinitas. Thank you also to CSUSM for use of the Ecke Family Archive Papers, and Dr. Jeff Charles and his students for their work in selecting a memorable group of photographs and artifacts.” The San Dieguito Heritage Museum is located at 450 Quail Gardens Drive in Encinitas.
