US Sand Sculpting Challenge: Port Authorizes Huge Sand Sculpting Event on ‘B’ Street Pier Labor Day Holiday Week
The Port of San Diego has again authorized producers of the U.S. Sand Sculpting Challenge and 3D Art Exposition to create a beach on the pier and is bringing in 300 tons of sand that will be carved and molded into beautiful sculptures by nearly 40 artists from all over the world to compete in 3 different classes of competition. There is more than $60,000 in prize money at stake. The world’s best sculptors from Italy, Ireland, the Netherlands, Portugal, Quebec and Ontario, Canada, will challenge the best in the U.S. from California and Washington. Last year, Rusty Croft from Carmel, CA, won the 2012 inaugural event for the U.S.A. Cruise ships please take airport exit and don’t berth at the cruise ship terminal pier downtown over Labor Day weekend. There won’t be room for you! Last year, 16 dump trucks unloaded sand on B Street Pier!
Starting on the Wednesday before Labor Day, artists in the World Masters class will have 4 days to create their masterpieces. Starting on Friday, the public will be able to view the last 2 days of sculpting and have 2 more full days to view the finished work. The pier is a wonderful venue with the Big Bay as a backdrop to the magnificent sand sculptures. Tall ships sail by with full regalia, occasionally recreating cannon battles of yore. Musicians, singers, dancers and circus performers entertain young and old. There’s a huge sandbox and truly unique rides for kids. (They can try to walk on water, bungy jump or take a zipline over the show.) Dozens of artists who work in metal, glass, ceramics, gemstones, fabric and more will exhibit and offer their work for sale. And gourmet food trucks serve wondrous snacks, meals and beverages. A portion of proceeds from the event go to each of 3 children’s educational charities. Young Audiences of San Diego/Arts for Learning brings performers into elementary and middle schools to show kids what life in the arts is all about. It’s All About the Kids Foundation helps less fortunate children through a network of 14 San Diego charities that serve over 11,000 kids. IAATK directly supports 10 previously homeless kids now in college. The Maritime Museum’s Children’s Education Program lets kids relive history and learn about the science of the sea. The museum’s ships and collections represent San Diego’s

San Diego Comic-Con International began as the Golden State Comic Book Convention and later the San Diego Comic Book Convention in 1970 by a group of San Diegans, which included Shel Dorf, Richard Alf, Ken Krueger and Mike Towry. Comic-Con is held at the San Diego Convention Center and is traditionally a four-day event that goes from Thursday through Sunday. A three-hour preview night happens on Wednesday and is open to professionals, exhibitors, and some guests that are pre-registered for all four days. Throughout the years, Comic-

Con has grown to be so big and popular that it’s very difficult to get tickets and the Convention Center has become too small a venue. There were over 140,000 attendees in 2011. The convention is the largest in the Americas, and fourth largest in the world after the Comiket in Japan, the Angoulême International Comics Festival in France, and the Lucca Comics and Games in Italy. Along with panels, seminars, and workshops with comic book professionals, there are previews of upcoming feature films, portfolio review sessions with top comic book and video game companies, and such evening events as awards ceremonies and the Masquerade, a costume contest, as well as the Comic-Con International Independent Film Festival, which showcases shorts and feature length movies. Traditional events include an eclectic film program, screening rooms devoted to Japanese animation, gaming, and various other programs with speakers and slide shows. Comic-Con features a large floor space for exhibitors. These include media companies such as movie studios and TV networks, as well as comic-book dealers and collectibles merchants. There’s also an autograph area, as well as the Artists’ Alley where comics artists can sign autographs and sell or do free sketches.

June 13, Saturday, 7am-5pm; Concert all day from 12-5pm
More than 12,000 people are expected to attend the 6th Annual Carlsbad Beach Fest on Saturday, June 15, from 8am to 4pm. Staged on one mile of beach stretching from Tamarack to Pine Avenue, the festival offers a funfilled day of events aimed at celebrating Carlsbad’s recreational paradise through good beach stewardship. Planned are competitive sporting events, free beach activities, live entertainment on multiple stages, and opportunities for the public to pitch in and help support our coastal environment. Carlsbad Mayor Matt Hall helps kick off the festivities by sending off runners and walkers for the 5K Low Tide Race on the sand. Athletes can become one of Hoehn’s Heroes by competing in a beach triathlon and duathlon, a one-mile ocean swim, and stand-up paddle races: all are sponsored by Hoehn Motors of Carlsbad. SurfRide presents a 16-division pro and amateur surfing contest for youth and adults, and local Zumba dance fitness instructors provide a fourhour Zumba-thon on the beach to Latin and world music. Free activities include a one mile fun run for children, beach volleyball, beach soccer, surf clinics, and kite flying. Visit a health and safety expo with lifeguard demonstrations and sports therapy. Watch U.S. champions build gigantic sand sculptures. Learn about beach and environmental stewardship, enjoy interactive educational booths, green vendor displays, and help clean up the beach. Show your support of our coastal environment by participating in a symbolic linking of “Hands Across the Beach.” “Beach Fest has become possibly the most important community event of the year,” said the event’s Executive Director, Tamara Urie. “This event has grown exponentially over the last four years – and with support from CA State Parks, the City of Carlsbad, and the Carlsbad community, Beach Fest continues to raise environmental consciousness and funds to help provide this annual celebration and support local coastal improvement projects.” Urie gave special thanks to founding sponsors NRG West and Life Technologies, whose support has made it possible to expand the event to one mile of beach and to maintain its long term sustainability. Carlsbad Beach Fest is a project of the Carlsbad Beach Fest Foundation Inc., a nonprofit 501(c) (3) public charity committed to the sustainability of our local beaches and waterways. The Beach Fest is free and open to the public. The competitive sporting events require paid registration in advance. Visit www.active.com for event registration, or visit www.carlsbadbeachfest.com for general information.

This is just the beginning of their story, and they are answering the dreams of North County residents and visitors who love fine wine and the SoCal beach lifestyle. Solterra is, beyond a shadow of a doubt, a destination winery on the map of Encinitas and San Diego North County. The 3,000 sq.ft. building features stunning architecture with high ceilings and large open windows gazing out onto Hwy 101. The winery is a wood barrel room with fermentation tanks, crusher and press. Adjacent to the winery is a full kitchen, bar and dining room. Perhaps the most interesting piece is the long concrete outdoor fire pit bar that seats up to 20, located just inches from the sidewalk and passers by. We’ve all
seen large open windows, gas lit heating lamps and outdoor tables in front of bars and restaurants along historic Hwy 101, but Solterra has outdone them all with their long outdoor fire pit beach bar! Although opened only recently (May 6, 2013), the buzz on the street is loud and clear by sommeliers, wine lovers, experts, and guests, that the wine is absolutely wonderful; and we couldn’t agree more. Owner and master winemaker Christopher Van Alyea is pouring more than twenty in-house wine varietals made from premium grapes he’s collected throughout California and Mexico. The Van Alyea Ranch is their vineyard in Sonoma County. Solterra Winery and Kitchen is the place to be. Join their Wine Club and get great savings (20% off all wine purchases) and invitations to all their events. Solterra is located at 934 North Coast Hwy 101, Leucadia 92024. Open Tue–Sun; closed Mon. sandwich piled so high that you wonder how you can ever open your mouth wide enough to take a bite? Nosh is the place for you! It’s been many years since Encinitas has had an authentic delicatessen. Nosh has recently opened its doors on El Camino Real (next to Papa John’s Pizza in the Michaels/Big Lots shopping Center) and already the word is spreading quickly, like cream cheese on a hot bagel. We highly recommend this Chicago-style deli to one and all. The #1, called “The Boss,” is a massive stack of very lean and perfectly seasoned corned beef, pastrami, Swiss cheese, and Russian dressing, on warm rye bread. It comes with crispy cole slaw and a crunchy kosher pickle. Hope you’re hungry, ‘cause it’s big enough for two! Nosh’s menu is quite extensive. They have Specialty Sandwiches, Paninis and Club Sandwiches, and Nosh Signature Sandwiches such as Corned Beef, Pastrami, Roast Beef, Turkey, Chopped Liver, and Egg Salad, just to name a few. Fresh breads include Rye, Kaiser Rolls, Challah, Bagels, and more. All sandwiches come with a Chipico kosher pickle and coleslaw. Homemade soups include an amazing Matza Ball Soup, Split
Pea, Chicken Noodle or Rice and Mushroom Barley. Other items worth mentioning are their many salads, desserts and breakfast specialties. Their Morning Take-Out Special is a bagel with cream cheese, coffee and a side of fruit for only $4.95! Owner and restaurateur, Bas Emani, hails from the windy city and brings the family business from Chicago to Encinitas. And Bas isn’t stopping here. He has already begun opening multiple restaurants in the San Diego area. You are going to hear a lot about this place. But talk is talk and the only way to believe how good it really is, is to try it yourself. Clip their coupon from their ad or on our coupon page and get a FREE bowl of soup with any full-size sandwich. Or, a free bag of chips and soft drink with any full-sized sandwich. Must present coupon. Open daily from 8am to 8pm for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Party trays and catering are also available. Great catering for graduation parties. Nosh Delicatessen is located at 337 N El Camino Real, Suite A, Encinitas 92024. Call (760) 943-6674 (NOSH) or visit www.noshdelicatessen.com.

On any given day, Mr. Taco is packed with Mexican food lovers that crave the perfect burrito, sizzling steak fajitas, tasty tacos, and special Mexican sauces. It’s packed everyday with neighborhood residents, local business people, and Cal State San Marcos students and faculty, who all know Mister Taco’s Fresh Mexican Grill is the best place to go for casual, quality, absolutely delicious, authentic, and best priced Mexican food around. All three family-owned and operated restaurants offer very extensive menus with the finest and freshest ingredients available, in a casual sit-down atmosphere. They also offer take-out and catering. Souplantation Del Mar
Souplantation’s Del Mar location has a fresh new look and menu items! Their Del Mar location is the first in North County to offer the new menu. During their Grand Opening a long line formed for several hours as excited diners waited to build-their-own meal and check out their favorite local Souplantation with brand new updates. 10% of the proceeds from the event were donated to the Boys and Girls Club of San Dieguito. The original menu still remains, but with new additions and options. New menu items include cage-free and antibiotic-free chicken skewers, and Niman Ranch steak skewers hot off the grill for an upcharge. This allows guests to add healthy meat to their meal if they wish but it doesn’t force vegetarians to subsidize it. Souplantation will also be launching a local craft beer and wine menu in the future as well. With its recent “freshlift,” guests got to experience the new stainless steel dishware, contemporary butcher block tables, open spaces, new décor and the communal eating areas for those who are dining
solo or looking for a social experience. The Del Mar location is one of the first of many Souplantations to undergo a “freshlift” and implement these upgrades. The very first Souplantation brought delicious, healthy dining to San Diego in March 1978. Many folks have grown up creating their own fresh salads and indulging in fresh-baked muffins at their favorite local Souplantation. Many fans are reluctant to seeing any change but Tammy Bailey, chief market officer for Garden Fresh Restaurant Corp., wants Souplantation fans to rest assured that it will remain the Souplantation everyone knows and loves but modernized to update the brand. Great place for lunch or dinner for Father’s Day and Summer Graduation Parties! Del Mar: 3804 Valley Centre Dr. (858) 481-3225. Encinitas: 109 North El Camino Real (760) 634-2500. Sub Zero Ice Cream & Yogurt
new twist on an old fashion and delicious idea. Forget 31 flavors to choose from, the inventors of Subzero Ice Cream, Jerry and Naomi Hancock, have over a trillion combinations! It’s a pretty big statement, but the inventors of Sub Zero Ice Cream can actually back it up. With their patented process, they can make your “new” favorite flavor as creamy as creamy can get, in about 15 seconds. Picture fresh, rich cream and ingredients, such as strawberries, chocolate chunks, and cheesecake bites, flash frozen with Liquid Nitrogen and mixed by hand at minus 321 degrees Fahrenheit. What makes this new ice cream so unique from really everything else on the market, is the fact it’s made right in front of you while you watch! This new scientific and patented process of making your favorite desert using Liquid Nitrogen is blasting off throughout the country. It’s the new generation of fresh, mixed with America’s favorite cold dessert. Because it’s flash frozen at minus 321 degrees, many Sub Zero Ice Cream & Yogurt locations offer custom made ice
cream and frozen yogurt sugar-free, gluten-free, lactose and dairy-free and offers options for Vegan diets. Ask your local Sub Zero location for details. Sub Zero Ice Cream & Yogurt is a great place for cool school science field trips. The science and technology of freezing and preparing food with Liquid Nitrogen is truly novel and of course the treat following the scientific experiment will be oh, so tasty! It’s also a great place for kid’s birthday parties. Ice cream doesn’t get any fresher that this! There are four Sub Zero locations in North County including their newest in Carlsbad Village. Carlsbad Village: 201 N. Oak Street (next to Board and Brew), Carlsbad 92008. Westfield Camino Real Mall: at Highway 78 and El Camino Real 92008 (760) 434-2126. Encinitas: 123 N. A Bruegger’s Breakfast Sandwich is the perfect way to start your day. Their classic breakfast sandwiches combine egg and your choice of peppered bacon, ham, sausage or turkey sausage on a hot fresh bagel. We recommend their Better Cheddar Sandwich. This delicious sandwich comes with an egg patty with cheddar cheese, peppered bacon, and light garlic herb cream cheese on a fresh baked bagel, toasted if you wish. Of course, our all-time favorite is their classic Smoked Salmon and cream cheese on a fresh bagel with tomato, red onions and capers. Yum! In addition to their famous bagels, breakfast sandwiches and bagel sandwiches, Bruegger’s also offers a healthier “Under 500 Calorie” menu. If you are a calorie counter, try one of their Skinny Bagels. Guests can now order any of Bruegger’s 15-plus
varieties “skinny,” due to Bruegger’s unique slicing process. Instead of changing the recipe of its time-tested, New York-style bagel, Bruegger’s slices the bagels thinner using a process that removes approximately one-third of the bagel’s center but preserves its unique eggshell crust and delicious toppings. The result is a lower calorie bagel without sacrificing variety or taste. Another healthy choice is their Skinny Zesty Egg White Sandwich. This comes with an egg white patty on a skinny sesame bagel, with turkey sausage, Swiss cheese and sundried tomato spread. Bruegger’s operates 300 bakeries in North America. Renowned for its award winning bagels, Bruegger’s offers a wide variety of freshly prepared breakfast and lunch options made with high quality ingredients served with its unique brand of hospitality. California Surf Museum Exhibits Bethany Hamilton Shark Bitten Surfboard The California Surf Museum is now exhibiting the shark bitten surfboard and swimsuit that teenage surfer Bethany Hamilton wore on the infamous day of October 13, 2003, when she was lying on her surfboard at Tunnels in Kauai, Hawaii, and was attacked by a 15-foot tiger shark. Bethany nearly died that day from loss of blood and ultimately lost her arm below her shoulder. Bethany since, has adapted to surfing with one arm, and with her surfing abilities and talent, won the 2005 NSSA National Surfing Championships. Her faith, positive spirit, strength and determination are an inspiration to us all. Bethany Hamilton and local Carlsbad teen athlete Ryan Maloney (standing next to Bethany Board in photo, and a Type1 Diabetic competitive marathon, SUP and surfing athlete) are both Team Riders for San Marcos based Cobian, a popular sandals footwear manufacturer. The
word on the street is that Cobian will soon be releasing a line of Bethany Hamilton sandals. Summer Hair Fashion Trends By Haim Knister New make-up and fashion can alter your look; but changing your hairstyle can be dramatic and leave a lasting impression. Whether you want a completely different style or a simple makeover, there are several possibilities. Layers add depth and dimension to your hair, especially when combined with highlights or beautiful color. You can add layers to either a short or long haircut. If you have heavy, shapeless hair, layers could bring it back to life. For an elegant look, wear soft graduated layers. For a funky and trendy look, try choppy or asymmetric layers with a tousled style. If your hair is thin and fine, soft layers will boost the volume. And, if you want to add movement to thick hair and bulky texture, heavy layers work well. Summer is a time to have fun with color, and if you’re fearless, even a slight color change can dramatically change your look. The possibilities are endless and a great way to update your hairstyle either by highlights or a solid color. Highlights give subtle color, although you could make them bolder by using brighter colors. You
can achieve more depth by using more than one shade in your highlights. Regardless of the length and cut you can opt for various designs like chunky highlighting, dip dyeing, paneling and horizontal highlighting, all very popular this season. Neon color really spices up your look. Single process color is more noticeable and drastic, especially if you choose a bold color or something different than your natural hair color. Long bangs, bangs swept to the side, or traditional bangs, have a dramatic effect. If you’re adding bangs for a new look or want to add color to your fringe, here are a few chic options. Short bangs cut upward above the eyebrow open up the eyes and expose the cheekbones. Blunt bangs, straight and without volume, work best on medium to thick hair. A new trend is highlighting bangs a different shade than the rest of your hair. You can either color a few chunky pieces or dye the entire bang a completely different color than your hair. Rocker bangs are cut very short and choppy, as unique as it is edgy. If you are not ready to commit to
full-on bangs, then long sweeping bangs are an alternative. They should sweep to one side, down the bridge of your nose. Creating a ’50s pompadour-style with your bangs, along with a high ponytail is perfect for special occasions. The Headquarters Salon and Wig Store Proudly Announces New Charity Foundation For Chemo Patients That Need Financial Help Purchasing Wigs The Headquarters Salon and Wig Store was recently voted Retailer of the Month by Raquel Welch Wigs, and it’s no surprise, because this is one of the best places in all of San Diego to get a wig or hairpiece, especially if you are a recovering chemo patient. Owner, hairstylist, and wig specialist, Cathy Ketchum, is an expert working with wigs and styling hair and especially working with chemo patients. It has been her life dream and goal to someday have a foundation to help patients that are having a hard time financially and need help purchasing a wig. Cathy’s new charity foundation does just this. It’s called “Look Better Feel Good Foundation”. Chemo patients that need help with purchasing a wig can now fill out some paperwork and ask for financial assistance. The Foundation board will consider every application and will
soon let patients know its decision. As far as Cathy knows, this is the first foundation of its kind. Cathy and her foundation are just starting up, so if you could, it would be great if you can make a tax-free donation to help chemo patients afford to look their best while going through the process. Some longer recovering chemo patients need better quality “real hair” wigs because they need to last longer for washing and maintaining, sometimes up to two years or longer. Experience really does matter in this business. Ketchum began working with wigs in East Lansing Michigan in 1975. She opened her first Headquarters Salon in San Marcos on Rancho Santa Fe Drive in 1985, and just recently opened a new, beautiful 2,700 square-foot salon and wig store in San Marcos on North Twin Oaks Road near Hwy 78, across the street from the US Post Office. The Wig Store has a private consultation room. The Headquarters will find and fit you with the perfect wig. And because they are a full-service salon they will custom cut your wig to perfectly fit you, and to make it even more natural, they will also color it to match your hair color or
give it a perm. If you purchase a wig from them, they will cut it and customize it at no additional cost...in a very private consultation room. Headquarters specializes in working with chemo patients. Cathy says, “My whole heart is in the chemo side of the business. I just love my work so much. It’s not about the money.” The Headquarters Salon and Wig Store is a full service salon. Haircuts are only $30 and manicures are $20. Salon Services include: men’s and women’s hair cuts/styling, razor cuts, colors, perms, weaves. They also offer complete nail services and wax services. The wig store carries synthetic and human wigs and hairpieces by Sherri Shepherd, Jon Renau, Raquel Welch, and Eva Gabor. Mention this article and get 10% OFF their 2013 wig collection and get a free cut and style! They have over 100 wigs on display including a brand new line of wigs called “Now” for darker skin complexions by The View co-host, Sherri Shepherd. The Headquarters Salon and Wig Store is located at 405 N. Twin Oaks Valley Rd #114, San Marcos 92069. Call (760) 744-2911 www.theheadquarterssalonandspa.com.

A Reason to Celebrate — California Condors from the Wild Turn 30 at San Diego Zoo Safari Park Oceanside Celebrates 125 Years Three of the four condors that were brought in as eggs from the wild and were the first to be hatched in a zoo are celebrating their 30th birthday. This birthday is reason to celebrate their age and the contributions these condors have made. The three condors, Sespe, Sisquoc and Almiyi, helped form the foundation for the condor recovery program at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park. “It’s a very significant event, because when these eggs were pulled from the wild there was a lot of controversy,” said Don Sterner, an animal care manager at the Safari Park. “Once these birds became established and they adjusted well, they started breeding and it became known that we could save them.” Of the three condors celebrating their 30th birthday, Sespe is the only one currently on exhibit and on view to the public. Sisquoc can be seen on the live Condor Cam at the Safari Park taking care of a recent chick. The other birthday condor, Almiyi, is currently in the condor breeding program making great contributions to the condor population. In the 30 years these three condors have been with the Park, the recovery program has come a long way. Beginning in the 1980s, there were only 22 condors left in the world. The Safari Park has now hatched over 170 chicks and released more than 80 birds in the wild. Currently there are now more than 400 condors, more than half of which are flying free in California, Arizona and Baja California, Mexico.

Popular Favorites and Newcomers to Play Carlsbad’s “2013 TGIF Jazz in the Parks” June 28 – Aug 24, Friday nights from 6- 8pm The 28th season of the City of Carlsbad’s “TGIF Jazz in the Parks” free outdoor concerts features a lively mix of beloved local bands, last year’s favorite debut groups, and great new ensembles. The first three concerts take place at Stagecoach Park, 3420 Camino de los Coches, between La Costa Avenue and Rancho Santa Fe Road. June 28, Madame LeRoux & Krewe plus Euphoria Brass Band – New Orleans Traditions Last summer’s inspired combination of two groups specializing in street parade marching music, dixieland, zydeco and rhythm & blues returns to a different park for a remix of Mardi Gras in June! July 5, High Street Band – Swing A brand new group with an old school approach, this ten-piece band brings the 1940s roaring back to life. Their goal is to get everyone in the park onto the dance floor! July 12, Brave Combo-Pop Eclectic Brave Combo is almost impossible to describe: these players can create danceable music out of anything from “Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star” to “The William Tell Overture.” They love to apply polka beats to unsuspecting ballads. Their return to TGIF might be the summer’s biggest reason to celebrate. TGIF moves to Poinsettia Park, 6600 Hidden Valley Road, for three concerts beginning in mid-July. Free shuttle service will operate between 4:30 and 9 p.m. from North Coast Calvary Chapel. July 19, Café R&B–Rhythm & Blues Another debut smash in 2012, this LA ensemble led by the titanium-packed Ms. Roach on vocals and the flaming
guitar of Byl Caruthers, is back for some serious strutting, singing and high-kicking. July 26, Louie Cruz Beltran – Latin Percussionist extraordinaire Beltran leads a very hot ensemble in salsa, cumbia, merengue, samba and all the Cuban sizzle an audience can handle in one night. August 2, The Bayou Brothers–Cajun Zydeco This beloved San Diego group is making its TGIF debut. The Cajun zydeco these brothers serve up is as authentic as étouffée and alligator sausage. Calavera Hills Park, site of the final three concerts, is at 2997 Glasgow Drive on the corner of Carlsbad Village Drive. Free shuttle service will operate between 4:30 and 9 p.m. Check the web site in June for details. August 9, Sierra Leone’s Refugee All-Stars – Afro-Pop & World Known worldwide as the voice of the dispossessed-yetoptimistic people of Africa, SLRAS was the greatest success story of the 2012 TGIF season: infectious, irresistible, inspiring. August 16, The Styletones–Raw Soul This band hasn’t been around long but it’s built quite a reputation for performing the strong music and truthful, emotional vocalizing that is the essence of soul. And then there are those horns! August 23, Big Time Operator–Big Band Swing The summer ends on a high note: the clear voice of band leader Warren Lovell and the sustained wail of the region’s hottest brass section. Without a doubt, this group is the TGIF audience’s favorite band. Patrons should bring low-back beach chairs and ground cover to TGIF concerts. Many bring picnics; light refreshments are also available for sale. Opportunity drawings are conducted during the intermission by the Carlsbad Friends of the Arts to support the concert series and other cultural programs. Warning: Carlsbad police issue parking tickets freely surrounding event venues. Please be very careful where you park! Many venues are not marked well! San Diego Zoo Safari Park’s extended summer hours, from June 29 to August 18, from 9am to 7pm, is the perfect time for North County visitors and residents to lace up their dancing shoes and prepare to beat on drums during Summer Safari. Guests will encounter extraordinary wildlife, like a cheetah reaching full sprint speed just 7 feet away from spectators; and be amazed at the incredible agility of Ethiopian acrobats using poles, ladders, hula-hoops and more. Interactive drumming performances will get participants moving or joining the performers in song and dance. Young Safari Park guests can also join African artisans to create bead bracelets and hula-hoops, while sporting complimentary safari hats to get them in the mood. Summer Safari allows guests to experience the sights and sounds of African animals with exciting animal encounters, including Cheetah Run, a unique, jaw-drop-
ping experience of watching a cheetah do what it does best–run. This free, daily event, weather permitting, is a definite crowd pleaser. During Cheetah Run, the cat races on a straight, 300-foot-long track, stretching its legs to reach a maximum speed of about 70 mph. Long summer days mean more time for fun at the San Diego Zoo with extended hours. The Zoo stays open from June 22 to September 2, from 9am to 9pm. The theme this summer is Australian Outback. Many activities are included with paid admission. The Hunte Amphitheater is unveiling a new show called “Australiana,” in which Aussie lore comes to life through acrobatics and aerial acts. Costumed characters of a koala, a hand-balancing snake and a Tasmanian devil will perform each day at 2 and 5 p.m. At the Koalafornia Boardwalk, Australian beaches meet California’s West Coast, and you can relax in the shade and enjoy snacks and a beer. Stay until the Zoo closes to catch “The Walkabout,” a finale featuring Nighttime Zoo entertainers as they perform down Front Street. The Guided Bus Tour is a 35-minute narrated tour on
a double-decked bus and runs from 9:30am to 4pm. It’s a great way to start the day and get a really good overview of the Zoo and animals. The Petting Zoo is open from 9:30am to 4:30pm. The Skyfari Aerial Tram moves over treetops with spectacular views and runs from 10am to 5pm. At the Insect House, sometimes the littlest things have the greatest impact. Teen Driver Education at MiraCosta College — Discounted Rates! For nearly 30 years, MiraCosta College Community Services has run a very successful driver education program. Each year, the program teaches about 1,200 teenagers the ins and outs of driving. The program consists of both classroom instruction of 30 hours and behindthe-wheel training, consisting of six hours of one-on-one training in a vehicle. Students take the classroom portion of the training, and once a DMV driver permit is obtained, students can also sign up for behind-the-wheel training. If a student signs up for both sessions, a small discount in total fees is granted. The program is offered at both the Oceanside and the San Elijo campuses.
Classroom Driver Education Certificated instructors interact with students, using guest speakers and contemporary audio/visual aids. MiraCosta College’s program uses the brand new version of “License to Drive,” including the text and videotapes. The staff at MiraCosta College truly believe that classroom driver education is the most important class your child will ever take. This class will make a difference in what they learn and how well they learn it. The experts will tell you that the biggest advantage of classroom driver education is that students interact with other students and learn from a qualified professional and not a computer screen. It will also help when they get their learners permit and take driver training. Behind-the-Wheel Training • Convenient after school, evening, and weekend times available.
• Behind-the-Wheel Driver Training sessions meet at Carlsbad High School, El Camino High School, Rancho Buena Vista High School, La Costa Canyon High School, MiraCosta College Oceanside Campus, and MiraCosta College San Elijo Campus. • Students receive six hours of one-on-one Behind-theWheel Driver Training instruction. • Licensed professional and reliable instructors. • Satisfies all DMV and Department of Education license requirements. Sign up for both programs at the same time and pay $353-a $28 saving! Individually, classroom driver education is $88 and behind-the-wheel training is $293. For more information on the driver education program at MiraCosta College, call 760.795.6825 or visit www.miracosta.edu/community.

The Del Mar Racetrack first opened its gates in 1937 and this summer the legendary racetrack once again will welcome the nation’s fastest horses and Southern California’s most spirited party-goers. The seaside facility’s seven-week meet – filled with big races, free concerts and exciting weekend events – will commence on Wednesday, July 17. One of Southern California’s most anticipated summer events – Opening Day at Del Mar – is likely to welcome more than 47,000 celebrities, socialites and partygoers to the track to get the season up and running in Kentucky Derby style, highlighted by “The One and Only Truly Fabulous Hats Contest,” a continuing tradition of
glamorous, eye-catching and elaborately beautiful hats. Besides world-class Thoroughbred racing, Del Mar is known for its incredible lineup of entertainment, hosting big name musical acts on the Seaside Stage for its Summer Concert Series. Race-goers can enjoy free shows from a lineup of performers that included Ben Harper, Cake and Dashboard Confessional during the 2012 meet. The lineup will include the addition of two Latin concerts on July 28 and August 4, rounding out a diverse and exciting concert series. Del Mar’s two beer fests will each feature more than 100 brews, showcasing more than 40 from the San Diego area on July 27, and more than 40 IPAs on August 31. Noonan Family Swim School Now Open in Carlsbad Noonan Family Swim School has recently opened its fifth year-round swim school in Carlsbad. This beautiful indoor aquatics facility is perfect for all swimming abilities from beginners through advanced swimmers. Noonan Family Swim School is well known in San Diego County for its excellent swim programs. Locations are in Carlsbad, Del Mar, Central San Diego, Rancho Bernardo and Murrieta/Temecula. All five facilities are family owned and operated. Noonan Family Swim School provides parents and children fundamental swimming knowledge in a safe and loving environment. Their Learn-to-Swim program is designed for children ages 3 and up. Their instruction programs cover levels for beginners up to advanced swimmers who focus on swimming techniques. Each level places its emphasis on water safety skills. For infants and toddlers, Noonan has its Splash Babies program in which the teacher and parent work together to teach the child swimming fundamentals. This program
focuses on water safety, floating, motor skill development, movement and fun! For more advanced swimmers, Noonan Family Swim School offers intramural swim teams and stroke clinics. These are designed for swimmers who have graduated the Learn-to-Swim program, those looking for a stepping stone to a competitive swim team or competitive swimmers seeking further stroke refinement. The intramural swim team works on building endurance and refining competitive strokes. In the stroke clinics, an emphasis is placed on stroke mechanics, teaching the swimmer how to move through the water in a more efficient manner. All of Noonan Family Swim School’s programs emphasize teaching children and their families how to be safer both in and around the water, while developing a lifelong love of swimming. For more information about Noonan’s programs, visit www.noonanfamilyswimschool.com, or call (858) 451-0794.

Vigilucci’s Beach Bocce World Championship XXXIl July 13, Saturday, 8am–5 pm On Saturday, July 13, over 1,200 people will gather at “Dog Beach” in Del Mar to crown a beach bocce world champion in each of four divisions: Men’s Open, Men’s Beginner/ Intermediate, Mixed, and Women’s. Enjoy an outstanding day filled with food, sun, and of course, championship beach bocce ball action, while raising money to support the Boys & Girls Clubs of Carlsbad. The event will surely be an extravaganza. Last year a record 365 two-person teams competed in 872 games and raised over $80,000 for the Boys and Girls Clubs of Carlsbad “We are absolutely amazed with the response,” said Boys and Girls Clubs Director of Marketing, Pat Maldi. “Regular team entries sold out within one week last year.” That was in 2012. This year the tournament team entries sold out in one night! Roberto Vigilucci has done a lot by giving back to the community. Everyone is invited to Dog Beach on July 13. Have fun, enjoy the day, but please, just this one day, leave your dog at home because space is very limited. Please, no giant umbrellas and pop-up canopies. Adult beverages are allowed in the tournament area only. Costumes are encouraged! Shuttles from Del Mar Fairgrounds will be provided. After the tournament stop in any of Vigilucci’s Italian restaurants and enjoy a meal or a drink just to say “thank you” back to Roberto! Commissioned by North Coast Repertory Theatre, this world premiere drama set in 1890s Cuba introduces a family coping with the changing landscape of their country as it struggles for independence. Melinda Lopez’s knack for dialogue, added to her research about this period, highlights issues of loyalty and family. Fighting for a cause and finding happiness are both interwoven throughout this powerful, often humorous piece. The birth of this new work of theatrical art signals an artistic zenith in our season and in North Coast Rep’s development as part of the national theatre community.
