La Jolla Playhouse Blood and Gifts June 12 – July 8 Mandell Weiss Forum, La Jolla Playhouse Blood and Gifts tells the story of the secret spy war behind the official Soviet-Afghan War of the 1980s. Spanning a decade and playing out in Washington DC, Pakistan and Afghanistan, the play offers up a slice of historical fiction laced with dark humor, as it follows the character of CIA operative Jim Warnock and his struggles to stop the Soviet Army’s destruction of Afghanistan. The ground constantly shifts for Jim and his British, Russian and Pakistani counterparts as the political and personal alliances between the men keep changing. In this thrilling, high-stakes game of cat-and-mouse, Blood and Gifts depicts the unknown men who shaped one of the greatest historical events in recent history, the repercussions of which continue to shape our world.

The Nightingale July 10 – August 5 Sheila and Potiker Hughes Theatre, La Jolla Playhouse A compelling contemporary musical based on Hans Christian Andersen’s classic tale, The Nightingale tells the story of a young emperor in ancient China, whose luxurious but constricted life inside the walls of the Forbidden City is upended by the song of an extraordinary bird that lives beyond his reach. 2012 Pageant of the Masters: The Genius July 7- August 31 The 2012 Pageant of the Masters in Laguna Beach pays tribute to the lives and masterpieces of extraordinary artists whose works have withstood the test of time. The forefront of the 2012 Pageant includes Michelangelo, Vincent van Gogh and the Dutch Masters, to name a few. Legendary composers will be feted in series of artworks dedicated to the “Maestros of Music,” and scientific innovation will be highlighted in “The Stars of Astronomy.” And Pageant traditionalists will no doubt welcome the return of the Renaissance master, Leonardo da Vinci, whose “The Last Supper” has been the Pageant finale, with rare exceptions, since 1936. “‘The Last Supper,’ is arguably the most recognizable masterwork of all time,” Challis Davy observed, “and Leonardo da Vinci was a genius for the ages, no question. He was not afraid to experiment and take chances,” she said. Longtime Pageant scriptwriter Dan Duling, states, “Genius exists in every field of endeavor, and it’s a fantastic source for moving stories of triumph, tragedy and courage. If you’re looking for inspiration, this show is going to dare you to think big.” When asked about what surprises might be in store for 2012 in terms of music or special effects, Challis Davy, preparing for her 17th year as Pageant director, noted there are plans for some advances in sound design and digital

projection, and hopes for some “unexpected light effects.” With its ambitious selection of acknowledged masterpieces, The Genius will certainly be an exciting centerpiece for the Festival of Art’s celebration of its 80th anniversary. Everyone associated with the production understands the Pageant wouldn’t be possible without that spirit of volunteer dedication. “I love art and theatre,” Challis Davy said, “and I’m lucky to be surrounded by people who love the hard work it takes to produce a very elaborate show. I get inspiration from my scriptwriter, my staff, my composers, and from the scores of enthusiastic research volunteers who come up with great suggestions!” The Pageant of the Masters will be performed nightly at 8:30pm from Saturday, July 7, through Friday, August 31. Tickets for The Genius, the 2012 Pageant of the Masters, are on sale now at www.PageantTickets.com. Tickets start at $15. For further information, call (949) 497-6852.

There will be fun with amazing creatures to discover, such as unexplained phenomena, and things that don’t fit but have been experienced for decades. Some of these are the mystery of the statues at Easter Island, Stonehenge and the Egyptian Pyramids. How has space influenced pop culture? You’ll find movies, television, fashion, food and collectibles that are weird, wacky, overwhelming and impressive all at the same time. From things that are so close to home they are in our cupboards, to things that are so far out of our reach they are still undiscovered, space has given the 2012 San Diego County Fair theme exhibits license to dream farther than ever before. of Sunday lunch. Pranzo welcomes families and friends to come together over the simple enjoyment of a leisurely, comforting meal and warm conversation. Pranzo – meaning lunch in Italian – remains a significant family event in Italy. Stroll the streets of any small Italian town on a Sunday morning, and the fragrance wafting from every window will be that of simmering sugo, Italy’s rich and slow-cooked meat sauce. Handmade pasta with sugo, fresh meat or fish, homemade desserts, a classic Italian cocktail and vino make up the typical ingredients for a Sunday lunch. Pranzo at Vivace continues the tradition, starting with a customary Aperitvi – Bellini, Negroni or Americano – followed by the perusal of antipasti stations; including crudo with oysters from Carlsbad Aquafarm, artisan burrata and mozzarella from local cheese makers, house-cured salumi sliced fresh to order and other assorted cold Italian delicacies. Then comes the enjoyment of the main family meal

— with each guest selecting an individual entrée and contorni (side dish). Generous portions — and the delivery of additional plates — encourage guests to share the dishes amongst their family and friends. Featuring contemporary Italian cuisine with a twist from Chef de Cuisine Jesse Paul, Vivace is a destination for those who appreciate the culture of great food. All pastas are made in-house daily, using only organic ingredients. Meat and seafood dishes are prepared using the best products from local farmers, cheese makers and artisans. The robust wine list features some of Italy’s finest wines as well as some hidden gems from lesser-known regions throughout the country. Pranzo is served at Vivace every Sunday between 11:30 am and 3pm and is priced at $45 per person. Reservations can be made by calling (760) 448-1234 or visiting www.opentable.com.

Food and the Brain: Is Sugar Addictive? By Jennifer Lee, Ph.D. We’ve all heard of “sugar-highs” and informal theories that foods, especially sweets, can act like drugs in our system. But how much truth lies in such rumors? If food can be addictive, how so, and why? And what are we supposed to do about it to make sure our kids and ourselves stay “clean”?

Considering human evolution, it is in our best survival interest that we have an inherent desire for foods high in calories (that’s why they taste so good). Indeed, research shows that, like humans, other mammals enjoy tasty treats (even without the influence of the modern food industry and its propaganda). Unfortunately, for those of us in environments conducive to food addiction, this natural desire can go awry. Many people say they crave sweet foods the same way alcoholics crave liquor, or a junkie craves his next “fix”.

Believe it or not, this claim has some justification in science. Laboratory rats given intermittent access to a sugary drink exhibit typical addictive behaviors almost immediately: bingeing when sugar is available, crashing when it’s not (withdrawal, anxiety,

San Diego Comic-Con International 2012

Fifth Annual “Christmas in July” at South Carlsbad State Beach

July 11-15

July 28, Saturday, 3-8pm

San Diego ComicCon International began as the Golden State Comic Book Convention and later the San Diego Comic Book Convention in 1970 by a group of San Diegans, which included Shel Dorf, Richard Alf, Ken Krueger and Mike Towry. Comic-Con is held at the San Diego Convention Center and is a four-day event that goes from Thursday through Sunday. A three-hour preview night happens on Wednesday and is open to professionals, exhibitors, and some guests that are pre-registered for all four days. Throughout the years, Comic-Con has grown to be so big and popular that it’s very difficult to get tickets and the Convention Center has become too small of a venue. There were over 140,000 attendees in 2011. The convention is the largest in the Americas, and fourth largest in the world after the Comiket in Japan, the Angoulême International Comics Festival in France, and the Lucca Comics and Games in Italy. Originally showcasing comic books, science fiction, fantasy, film, and television the convention has expanded over the years to include a larger range of pop culture elements, such as horror, animation, anime, manga, toys, collectible card games, video games, webcomics, and fantasy novels. Along with panels, seminars, and workshops with comic book professionals, there are previews of upcoming feature films, portfolio review sessions with top comic book and video game companies, and such evening events as awards ceremonies and the Masquerade, a costume contest, as well as the Comic-Con International Independent Film Festival, which showcases shorts and feature length movies. Traditional events include an eclectic film program, screening rooms devoted to Japanese animation, gaming, and various other programs with speakers and slide shows. Comic-Con features a large floor space for exhibitors. These include media companies such as movie studios and TV networks, as well as comic-book dealers and collectibles merchants. There’s also an autograph area, as well as an Artists’ Alley where comics artists can sign autographs and sell or do free sketches.

Have fun with the whole family and maybe even win a free week of camping at the glorious beaches in Cardiff or Carlsbad. Last year’s event raised $13,000 for the Friends of Cardiff and Carlsbad State Beaches, all of which went into preservation of the beaches from Cardiff to Carlsbad. Christmas in July events include a parade with Santa Claus through the South Carlsbad campground; games for the children including rock painting; photo opportunities with Santa Claus and Santa’s Elves; and an evening campfire event where the Grand Prizes will be announced. You don’t have to be camping at the park to attend. Christmas in July is a free family event open to the public.

FOOD AND THE BRAIN Continued from page A-14 depression, and craving-like behaviors). So, very sugary substances, at least behaviorally, act much like addictive narcotics. But what about physiologically? Most addictive drugs cause increases in extracellular dopamine in a part of the brain called the nucleus accumbens. Dopamine is one of our “feel-good” neurotransmitters that is largely responsible for our motivation and reward systems. Typically, drug-seeking behavior will cause a rise in dopamine levels in the brain even before the drug is actually consumed—the mere anticipation of reward is oh-so rewarding. Rats addicted to sugar ingest it in a bingelike manner that releases dopamine in the accumbens during and right before consumption, much like heroin use in humans. And also like drug addiction, this sugar bingeing causes changes in the expression and availability of dopamine receptors in the brain: the next “high” will require even more sugar to achieve the same effect.

Summer Fun and Safety Tips from the Auto Club To help travelers make their dollars go further this summer with high gas prices and help ensure great vacations, the North County branches of the Automobile Club of Southern California makes the following recommendations: Add free or low-cost activities to your itinerary. Go online and review events calendars for your destination. AAA’s popular TripTik also lists major events by city, and AAA TourBooks provide listings of museums and other low-cost attractions. Also, many travel packages offer activity vouchers as a value-added benefit for AAA members. If flying, pack light. Most airlines now charge fees for checked luggage and some have even started charging for carry-on bags. Getting there early/timing the lines. The crowds will be lightest early in the morning at popular attractions. If your vacation package/theme park ticket has the option of early attraction admission, use it. Time your meals to miss the crowds. Max out your discounts. Hotels, car rentals, meals, attractions and airline tickets eat up the biggest chunk of vacation spending. Don’t pay retail if you can avoid it. Auto Club branches sell theme park and attraction tickets at member prices, including Disneyland® Park Resort, Universal Studios HollywoodSM, SeaWorld® and the San Diego Zoo. The free AAA Discounts app also provides a quick snapshot of all the savings near any place you are

traveling in the U.S. and Canada. Make sure you don’t overpay for gas. Price averages are different all over the country. A quick check of FuelGaugeReport.AAA.com will give you a current price average at or near your destination city, so make sure you find a station lower than that price. Consider travel insurance. With a major trip purchase, many travelers find it worth the extra investment to protect against illnesses, accidents, airline problems or other events that can impact their trips. Play it safe on social media. Real-time broadcasts of the fact that your whole family is out of town could be an invitation for a home break-in. Save the vacation photo posts for when you return. Get a paper map. GPS systems can go down and cell phones/electronics may not get service or run out of power. A paper map is bigger and you have the option to mark it up before your trip and use it as a fun family travel planning tool. Many of the above-mentioned services are available as member benefits at the Auto Club’s Encinitas branch, 499 E. El Camino Real, Suite A-100. (760)635-4070 Auto Club’s Del Mar Branch, 2666 Del Mar Heights Rd, Del Mar (858) 749-3370 Auto Club’s Oceanside Branch, 3330 Vista Way, Oceanside (760)930-7570 Auto Club’s San Marcos Branch, 137 Las Posas Rd, San Marcos (760) 891-3670

Another interesting tidbit: High sugar consumption mimics our brain’s natural opiate system. Opiates are the pleasure chemicals found in our brains (released after orgasm and vigorous exercise, among other things) and in drugs derived from the poppy plant (morphine, heroin, oxycodone, etc.). Of course, no one is saying that eating a bag of Twizzlers is on-par with recreational Vicodin use. The problem with these pleasure chemicals comes in their addictive consequences. Sugar addiction causes opioid-like changes in gene expression (in the accumbens), opioid withdrawal (which can be induced with naloxone, a drug used to treat heroin overdose), and a decrease in extracellular dopamine in periods without sugar availability. As with any addiction, you can see how the vicious cycle works: decreased dopamine causes craving and withdrawal, which is such a “low” that you just need this one last box of Girl Scout Cookies and then you’re back on-track tomorrow. But tomorrow comes, and it is even harder to stay off the sweets than yesterday.

So now you know that there is some evidence to suggest that sugar can be addictive. As with any consumable that is very desirable, moderation is the key. Trace amounts of refined sugars every now and then are fine… binges are dangerous. Fruits are a good source of sugar as they contain other nutrients that will fill you up and make you less likely to consume too much sweetness. When you’re craving a sweet, ask yourself what sweets you have had lately, and how much of them you allowed yourself. Might you be battling a sugar addiction? The Sun, the Surf, and Beach Volleyball

By Andy Lee

If you’ve never experienced a professional beach volleyball game, you probably don’t know where Hangtown is. North County beaches are known for hanging-loose surfers, bikini-clad girls and beach volleyball studs. It’s really quite a show, and it happens every day, in the fog or sunshine, at our local beaches, while most of the rest of us are working our tails off and barely taking time out for lunch. Are you sensing a little beach envy here? Darn right you are! But somebody has to watch the store, right? I digress. What I’m trying to say is that the best things in life are free, and the best free entertainment in North County happens right here on our local beaches, and beach volleyball plays a big part. I just finished a business meeting that didn’t go the way I had planned, so I decided to head to Moonlight Beach to put my head in a better place. It was about 10:30 on a Tuesday morning. The sun was just breaking through, there was a nice little bump in the waves, and all three volleyball courts were full. That’s right, it was Tuesday and all the courts were full! I looked over to the court closest to the refreshment stand. Four girls were playing a game and they were pretty darn good. They knew what they were doing; calling plays with hands behind their lower backs and fingers pointing down, so their opponents on the other side of the net couldn’t see their signals. I stopped to watch and found myself relaxing and forgetting about work. I enjoyed watching them play; serving, bumping, setting, calling directions to each other and trying to make their opponents look silly by spiking the ball over the net and having them dive head first with outstretched arms trying to dig the ball before their bodies hit the sand. My focus abruptly changed when I heard the smashing of hand to ball on the court closest to the water and saw a ball slamming into the sand and bouncing off the sand court like a spring-loaded rocket. I couldn’t believe how high the towering hitter jumped to spike the ball, but I know most professional basketball players would have admired the height. It’s one thing jumping on hardwood courts wearing Nikes; it’s something totally different watching someone barefoot get that much air, jumping off of deep soft sand. I was focused on the four guys playing and they were seriously good. I’ve watched quite a few beach volleyball tournaments in my day at Hermosa Beach, Redondo Beach, and Manhattan Beach; but mostly during the 80s at East Beach in Santa Barbara. Often, the best of the best would show up to compete, such as Mike Dodd, Tim Hovland, Randy Stoklos, Sinjin Smith, and Karch Kiraly, a Santa Barbara hometown hero. I often went to see my tall sleek friend, Natalie, play indoors as a UCSB Gaucho under the tutelage of legendary Coach Kathy Gregory. Those girls were amazing to watch and Gregory would frequently show up at the beach and play and talk trash. The game ended, so I went up and introduced myself and asked who they were. As it turned out, there were three Matts and a Derek, all of whom are professional beach volleyball players and local residents. They told

me that they practice here 2-3 times a week. I asked if I could come back to take some photos and they obliged. I returned with my camera two days later. As it turned out the courts were full again and the fog was in. About a half hour later they got a court, began playing and the sun started to burn through. I watched for a while then snapped a few photos before the sun ducked behind the fog again. There are quite a few beach volleyball organizations in Southern California. There’s USA Volleyball, Association of Volleyball Professionals, National Volleyball League, California Beach Volleyball Association, and Wide Open. Beach volleyball, like many professional sports these days, has taken a hit due to the economy. There’s never been a huge amount of money in professional beach volleyball, but if you ask any player, he or she will usually tell you the same thing as Matt Olson, “It’s never totally been about the money. Beach volleyball is a lifestyle and we simply love to play. However, making a living spiking volleyballs would be nice! I have played since I was about 10 and plan to continue to play until I am physically unable. I love this sport!” So, my recommendation to you this summer is to head down to Moonlight Beach in Encinitas, or any one of our other great local beaches with volleyball courts such as Dog Beach in Del Mar, Ponto Beach in Carlsbad or South Oceanside Harbor, and enjoy the show. If you want to know where all the summer beach volleyball tournaments are check out the list on page A-18 or on our website’s sports page at www.HotinNorthCounty.com. And, if you still don’t know where Hangtown is, then I suggest heading to Moonlight Beach and asking one of the many beach volleyball studs playing there. I’m sure, any one of them will be happy to tell you.

Del Mar Celebrates 75th Year of Thoroughbred Horse Racing 37-Day Meet Opens July 18 We’ve Got Free Tickets! Seventy-five years ago a Hollywood icon, Bing Crosby, had a show business idea. Why don’t I get together with some of my movie star pals, build a little racetrack down by the sea, race all day, party all night and leave the cares of the world behind. The place he had in mind was the seaside community of Del Mar. And the racetrack in 1937, called simply Del Mar, grew from a quiet, little country getaway to be one of America’s premier gathering spots for both Thoroughbred sport and Southern California fun in the sun. Down through these past 75 years many noteworthy and memorable horses, people and events have unfolded on the 350-acre state fairgrounds that Del Mar calls home. For instance, after a popular opening year,

Crosby put together a winner-take-all match race for the then-remarkable sum of $25,000 featuring his horse, Ligaroti, against the most famous horse in the country Seabiscuit. He broadcast the race coast to coast on his weekly radio variety hour, which was the most popular show in America. After “The Biscuit” won a thriller by a nose in track-record time, the once-obscure little cavalry grounds by the sea was known to one and all. The stars came and played and Del Mar’s style was born. Lots of competition mixed with lots of fun, with a dash of laid-back mellow that had California written all over it. Eddie Read, the track’s first publicist, coined the phrase that fit then – and still does today: “Del Mar’s the place where nobody’s in a hurry but the horses.” Since then, dozens of champions have raced on Del Mar’s tracks down through the decades, starting with horses like Seabiscuit and racing forward to names like Native Diver, Cigar, Silver Charm and Zenyatta. Hall of Fame riders like Bill Shoemaker, Laffit Pincay, Jr., Chris McCarron, Kent Desormeaux and Mike Smith

have worked out of the track’s jockey room. And Hall of Fame trainers like Charlie Whittingham, Ron McAnally, Robert Frankel, Neil Drysdale and Bob Baffert have walked the shedrows on its backstretch. Today, Del Mar is still a place to watch the best and to feel the best you can. And it still offers action aplenty and diversionary delights that can set a soul to dancing. Del Mar. Sometimes you just don’t need to say anymore than that. Win Tickets! How about heading to the track this year already a winner with a pair of free tickets! It’s easy to win. Just visit www.HotinNorthCounty.com and fill in the simple entry form. Ticket winners will be randomly selected and notified by phone and email. Some restrictions apply. England Prepares for 2012 Summer Olympics July 27 to Aug 12 The 2012 Summer Olympic Games, officially known as the Games of the XXX Olympiad or London 2012 Olympic Games, are scheduled to take place in London, England from July 27 to August 12. London will become the first city to officially host the modern Olympic Games three times, having previously done so in 1908 and in 1948. London was selected as the host city in July 2005 during the 117th IOC Session in Singapore, defeating Moscow, New York City, Madrid and Paris after four rounds of voting. The successful bid was headed by former Olympic champion Sebastian Coe. The Olympics prompted a redevelopment of many of the areas of London in which the games are to be held – particularly themed towards sustainability. While the budgetary considerations have generated some criticism, the Games will make use of many venues which were already in place before the bid, including Wembley Stadium, Wembley Arena, Wimbledon All England Club, Lord’s Cricket Ground, The O2 Arena, Earls Court Exhibition Centre, Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy, and the Excel Centre.

London’s public transport was an element of the bid which scored poorly in the IOC’s initial evaluation, however they felt that if the improvements were delivered in time for the Games then London would cope. Transport for London carried out numerous improvements in preparation for 2012, including the expansion of the London Overground’s East London Line, upgrades to the Docklands Light Railway and the North London Line, and the introduction of a new “Javelin” high-speed rail service, using Hitachi Corporation’s “bullet” trains. According to Network Rail an additional 4,000 train services will run during the Games, with train operators adding longer trains during the day. Transport for London also proposed the construction of a £25 million cable car across the River Thames, the “Thames Gateway Cable Car”, to link 2012 Olympics venues. It will cross the Thames river between Greenwich Peninsula and the Royal Docks, carrying up to 2,500 passengers an hour at heights above 50 feet in the air. It is designed to cut transportation times between the O2 arena and the ExCel exhibition centre.

The event takes

participants past Carlsbad’s scenic beaches, lagoon and wildlife preserve. Registrations are capped at 1,000 to ensure a safe, fun experience for all participants. Volunteers for the Carlsbad Triathlon are needed for several positions on race day, including athlete checkin, body marking, hospitality, timing crew and a wide variety of other jobs. The streets of Downtown Encinitas are rockin’ and rollin’ when Encinitas Classic Car Nights rolls into town, the third Thursday of each summer month. Hot rods, foreign automobiles, classic cars and woodies line S. Coast Highway 101 from D Street to K Street. Classic cars are parked along Hwy 101 and on side streets. Live music is performed in front of Encinitas Smog at 682 S. Coast Hwy 101 and also at Cardiff Classics, 1049 S. Coast Hwy 101. This year’s series is greatly expanded, starting with six dedicated lots for car clubs. Sterling Solar is sponsoring the SMOG Test Only Awards and providing the solar power for the bands. In addition to doubling the available parking, Downtown Encinitas Mainstreet Association is doubling the music venues, with one stage at each end of town. Moondance is playing at the SMOG Test Only Lot in June and Rob Mehl performs in July. Band of Jimmys entertains crowds at Cardiff Classics in June and Tower 7 plays in July. Every car in attendance is eligible for awards and there is no fee for displaying or viewing the cars. If historic Downtown Encinitas, with over 40 great restaurants and 200 unique shops, is not reason enough to enjoy a night out on the town, the Encinitas Classic Car night will up the ante. The event is free and open to the public. For more information, visit www.encinitas101.com or call 760-943-1950.

NIGHTTIME ZOO : CHINA CELEBRATION When the sun goes down in San Diego this summer, a new take on a legendary tradition begins. Join us to honor the fascinating animals and ancient arts of the Orient during Nighttime Zoo’s China Celebration. The party commences nightly June 23rd to September 3rd. Visit sandiegozoo.org for details.

Summer Fun on the 101: A Festival of Surfy Music is a free concert series that celebrates the unique cultural crossroads of surfing and music which are both a big part of Leucadia’s history. Bands will play at Lou’s Records and Ducky Waddle’s on Friday night. On Saturday the music will continue at Leucadia Roadside Park during the day with a second stage at Surfy Surfy from 8-10 pm. The Saturday event will also include a beer garden adjacent to the park. Paul Ecke Central School’s “School as a Garden” program will be beneficiary and receive a donation from the event. The Leucadia Main Street organization promotes economic development and plays a key role in keeping their town center healthy and viable. Recognizing Leucadia’s historical value as one of the last remaining old fashioned beach towns in Southern California, Leucadia 101 Main Street promotes Leucadia as an exciting and worthwhile place for residents, businesses and visitors alike. Special events like Summer Fun on the 101 play a significant role in achieving that goal. For more information, call 760-436-2320 or visit www.leucadia101.com.

Located on the second floor, just up the escalator, at the Forum shopping center in Carlsbad, you’ll be greeted by friendly and professional staff that will listen and help you the best that they can. North County Sun Publisher, Andy Lee, says, “ I recently had my daughter’s teeth worked on by Dr. Nguyen and we were very satisfied with the price and the results. We were quoted a much higher price from another nearby dental office. It was nice to see that Dr. Nguyen has integrity. There were some possible future tooth issues that the Doctor said that she wanted to wait and see, and keep an eye on the issues, instead of doing work prematurely. I really appreciated that.” Dr. Tania Nguyen knows the importance of creating a pleasant dental experience that will cater to your unique

dental healthcare needs. She and her staff strive to deliver the best diagnosis and most up to date treatment available. Dr. Nguyen’s philosophy is based on the preventive health care model. New! Free Web Directory for Educators, Instructors and Anyone Searching for Classes in North County Carlsbad, CA - June 1, 2012 - Print Zone Entertainment, a Carlsbad-based media group, today announced a groundbreaking one-stop free web marketplace for anyone to list and search for educational and recreational classes in North County. The new web directory, www. NorthCountyClasses.com, was designed and developed for teachers, instructors, colleges, universities, private and public businesses and institutions, fitness centers, parks and recreation, activity centers, pre-schools, and kid’s camps to advertise their classes, lessons and kid’s camps for free. The website www.NorthCountyClasses.com has been in operation for more than six years but has recently redeveloped its platform with the latest in search engine technology. There’s nothing else like it in North County. The concept is similar to Craigslist because of its free usage and user-friendly search capability, but the North County Classes web directory is more narrow and defined, whereas www.NorthCountyClasses.com is a free, local marketplace specifically for North County residents and visitors. Andy Lee, CEO and Publisher of Print Zone Entertainment and Print Zone Media, publishes the North

County Sun, www.HotinNorthCounty.com and www. NorthCountyClasses.com. He believes that many legitimate educational institutions and businesses are reluctant to post their classes on Craigslist for various reasons. Lee states, “We’re providing an alternative with a very local focus in mind. Think about it...there are very few places where the Boys and Girls Clubs, YMCAs, parks and recreation departments, preschools, private schools, private music teachers, yoga or dance instructors, or kid’s surf camps can list their classes. Most private teachers, and many places that offer classes, have a very limited advertising budget or none at all. We’re filling a real need. We’re the only website that offers this type of service in North County. We’ve invested a lot in the concept, design, development, and searchability of our site.” Although the concept is quite simple, it may take a while for educators and the general public to become familiar with the site. However, when the word gets out, and people start talking about and using the site, the higher it will become ranked on search engines. The site offers a place for “Blogging,” a “Forum,” a “live RSS feed” of local school news, an organic search engine, and categories for all

types of “adult classes,” “kid’s classes,” and a “kid’s orbit” to locate schools, camps, after school services, play places, and birthday party services. Advertising opportunities are available but limited. Instructors, teachers, schools and businesses can place rotating banners, stationary ads, discount coupons, and video clips on the site. Very visible, color banner ads are only $49 a month. For advertising opportunities, please call (760) 635-9100 or email info.northcountyclasses@gmail.com.
