Harvest Ranch Market, Rancho Santa Fe Plaza’s anchor, is a purveyor of fine foods, gourmet deli meats, poultry, seafood, salads, organic fruit and produce, international cheeses, wines and products of the world. This is a gourmet market that has been serving the San Diego Community for over 17 years. Locally owned and operated, Harvest Ranch features a full-service butcher shop with premium Brandt Beef and Snake River Farms Idaho Kobe Beef, Midwestern Pork, Milk-fed Veal, Colorado Lamb, fresh air-chilled Chicken and Sushi-grade seafood. Their deli kitchens specialize in all natural, made-from-scratch, restaurant quality foods and a sandwich deli featuring Boar’s Head Brand deli meats and cheeses and a wide selection

of homemade salads. They offer sandwiches, salads and bakery items daily. They have online ordering through their website deli page using GrubHub, and deliver to your home or office. The produce department features a variety of organic and local produce, as well as imported produce from South America. The wine department is second to none and each store has a team of experienced wine connoisseurs. They offer full service catering for all occasions, inclusive of any items from their store. Delivery options are also available to the greater Rancho Santa Fe and Encinitas areas. Harvest Ranch Market is located in the Rancho Santa Fe Plaza at 162 S. Rancho Santa Fe Road, Encinitas 92014. Visit their website at www. harvestranchmarkets.com. Follow them on Facebook and Instagram.

OPH is a third generation business that originated in Portland, Oregon. Their signature breakfast dishes include The Dutch Baby, Mushroom Omelet with mushroom sherry sauce, and their Apple Pancakes. They’ve been the locals’ choice for the ultimate breakfast in San Diego ever since they opened the first franchise in San Diego in 1979. They are located in Encinitas, Vista, San Diego, Kearney Mesa, Poway and Temecula. Their world famous original recipes are from all over the world, and incorporate the very finest ingredients, such as USDAA grade butter, pure 36% whipping cream, fresh grade AA eggs, hard wheat unbleached flour, and their own homemade sourdough starter recipe.

Their batters and sauces are made fresh daily in each restaurant’s kitchen; and their coffee is their own special blend. Try OPH’s special thick sliced bacon and their amazing omelets; and we highly recommend their gourmet cherry Kijafa crepes. If you’ve never tried The Original Pancake House, you’re long overdue; and if you’re already a regular, then you know what we’re talking about. Experience the flavor, the atmosphere, the attention to quality and service, and the ultimate breakfast favorite for San Diegans for over 35 years. The Original Pancake House is located in Rancho Santa Fe Plaza at 160 S. Rancho Santa Fe Road, Encinitas 92024. Call (760) 9431939 or visit www.originalpancakehouse.com.

Located in Rancho Santa Fe Plaza, at the junction where Encinitas meets Rancho Santa Fe, Firenze is celebrating their 21st anniversary this year. Their longevity speaks volumes about their cuisine and service. As owner/restaurateur, Barry Podwell, explains, “We don’t have the luxury of having spectacular ocean views like so many restaurants along the coast, so our food has to be very good to keep us here all these years.” It’s true. Firenze Trattoria may not have the ocean, but it certainly does have spectacular food. They are recent winners of the Diners Choice Award from Open Table and have won numerous awards over the years, including Wine Spectator Award of Excellence, and Best Italian by Ranch and Coast. Firenze Trattoria’s authentic Italian cuisine evokes thoughts of Italy’s Tuscany coast with its romance and flavors. The menu includes an extensive lineup of local favorites, too many to list; but we especially recommend their signature Lasagne Firenze. Every Italian restaurant boasts about their lasagna, but this one is truly

special. It’s hard to see the layers of ricotta cheese, a mixture of beef, chicken, and sausage, fresh Roma tomato, mushroom, and parmesan atop marinara sauce, because it’s completely covered with a super light and creamy béchamel sauce. It’s absolutely delicious. Other recommended dishes include: Calamari Fritti Antipasti, with lightly battered, deep fried calamari served with piquant marinara sauce; Risotto Portofino, grilled jumbo shrimp served with artichoke hearts and asparagus, surrounding a center mound of risotto. From Filet Mignon al Casino to Butternut Squash Ravioli, you just can’t miss. Happy Hour is 4-6:30pm Mon-Sun with a popular discounted bar menu for food, wine, cocktails, and beer. Jazz on the Patio is lively every Sunday evening. Mondays offer 1/2 off bottles of wine. Firenze Trattoria is located at 162 South Rancho Santa Fe Rd, Encinitas 92024. Call (760) 944-9000 or visit www. firenzetrattoria.com.

Over the past fourteen years, Meritage Wine Market has won multiple awards including “Best Wine Shop in San Diego.” They opened in 2002 and have evolved into a multi-level wine experience. Whether you are looking for stress-free wedding wine services, want to give that perfect gift, or need a great bottle of wine for dinner, Meritage is known for its exemplary customer service and personal touch. Present this offer to a sales representative and receive 10% OFF ANY PURCHASE of a case or more. Open Tuesday through Saturday from 10am to 6:30pm, the staff at Meritage Wine Market is ready to help you find the perfect bottle of wine or Champagne this holiday season. Meritage invites you to stop in and enjoy tasting a selection of 16 different wines from their

Enomatic Wine Tasting Machines, while relaxing on their outdoor patio. Weekly tastings are themed and held every Friday night from 6 to 8 PM and include 6 different wines from all over the world for you to enjoy. Meritage presents intimate wine seminars and dinners in their private Cellar Room several times a month, in addition to hosting a wine school. Ask about their Wine of the Month Club. In addition, Meritage is actively involved with multiple charity organizations and events, including Make-A-Wish San Diego and their annual Wine & Wishes Tasting Event. Meritage is located in the Rancho Santa Fe Plaza at 162 S. Rancho Santa Fe Road, Encinitas 92024. Call (760) 479-2500 or visit their website at www.meritagewinemarket.com.

Bentley’s serves the finest steaks, prime rib, lamb chops, pork, chicken, and seafood from around the world. It is located in the Rancho Santa Fe Plaza, in the same shopping center as Harvest Ranch Market, on the corner of Encinitas Blvd and Manchester Ave. Enjoy the big city steakhouse experience without the big city drive and prices. Encinitas residents, Tom and Diane Fulkerson, are the owners. Tom has over 40 years experience in fine restaurant operations including Hungry Hunter, Carlos Murphy’s and others. The Fulkersons are dedicated to providing a high quality dining and entertainment experience in a classic steak house atmosphere. Their extensive Steak and Chop menu includes: a 16 oz Kansas City Strip bone-in; a Whiskey Peppercorn New York Strip; 8 and 11

oz Filet Mignons; a Double Thick Pork Chop; and their famous BBQ Baby Back Ribs, slow roasted and glazed with their award-winning BBQ sauce. Their Prime Rib is awesome and comes in 10, 14, and 24 oz, slow-roasted for seven hours to ensure that it’s the most tender and flavorful possible. Bentley’s features one of North County’s most extensive wine lists. They offer $15.95 dinner specials every Sunday and Monday with your choice of Filet Mignon, Prime Rib, or Atlantic Salmon. They have a great Happy Hour every day except Sunday with drink and food specials at the bar. Bentley’s is located in the Rancho Santa Fe Plaza at 162 Rancho Santa Fe Rd. in Encinitas. Call (760) 632-9333 or visit www.bentleyssteak.com.

Champagne French Bakery Café has locations in Del Mar Highlands, Encinitas, and Carmel Mountain. Champagne has been serving a fusion of modern and traditional French cuisine since 1987. They have an assortment of coffees, teas, breads, pastries, cakes, tarts, cookies, sandwiches, salads and soups. They are famous for their pastries, including a variety of croissants, custard brioche, cinnamon roll, raisin scone (one of our favorites), and cranberry muffin. Desserts include such delights as: Napoleon, which is a crispy puffed pastry layered with vanilla cream and topped with fondant and chocolate; crème brulee; vanilla éclair; bread pudding; and chocolate dipped strawberries. They also serve cakes, tarts, and cookies. One of our

favorites is their raspberry cookie, which is two soft cookies sandwiched with raspberry preserves and half is dipped in dark chocolate. Try Champagne French Bakery Café for lunch under an umbrella in front of the Rancho Santa Fe Plaza clock tower and fountain. Sandwiches include a wonderful assortment of French Dip, Turkey Florentine Panini, and Chicken Pesto. They also serve delicious salads and soups. Champagne Bakery is in the Rancho Santa Fe Plaza next to Harvest Ranch Market at 162 S. Rancho Santa Fe Road, Encinitas 92024. Call (760) 944-9446 or visit www.champagnebakery.com.

The story is of a hulking green ogre who, after being mocked and feared his entire life by anything that crosses his path, retreats to an ugly green swamp to exist in happy

isolation. When a gang of homeless fairy-tale characters (Pinocchio, Cinderella, the Three Pigs) raid his sanctuary, claiming they’ve been evicted by the vertically challenged Lord Farquad, Shrek strikes a deal to help them both reclaim their homes. He ends up trekking to rescue a princess, adventuring through a forest and even meeting a talking donkey. The Star Theatre Oceanside is located at 402 N. Coast Hwy., Oceanside, CA 92054. Bringing Your Own To-Go Containers Reduces Economic and Environmental Costs By Serena Lee, Editor My dad and I go out to eat quite often. When we do, we often order too much food. We are then faced with a dilemma—we know there’s a food waste issue in this country and don’t like to waste our leftovers, but we also dislike Polystyrene containers, better known as Styrofoam. It always puts us at more ease when the restaurant uses recycled paper to-go boxes, but many go for the cheaper, and much less environmentally friendly option, Styrofoam. Recently, as we were complaining about our latest restaurant ordering screw-up by ordering way too much food, I suddenly realized that we had an abundance of plastic containers at home. We somehow accumulate them as time passes. I mentioned that we should put a couple of them into our reusable shopping bags in the trunk of the car, so that we could use them as takeout boxes instead.

Then, we would have nothing to complain about. They were already items that we had in our house, and are completely washable and reusable. We have since gone to three separate restaurants— American, Thai, and Japanese–around North County, hearing the same encouragement each time. “Is that your take-out box?” the servers ask, smiling. “I’ve never seen that before!” A waitress at a San Marcos restaurant came up to us and told us that she was happy about the plastic container idea; it was better for their business’s overhead costs because containers’ costs add up. My dad and I hope that with the recent ban of plastic shopping bags in Oceanside and Encinitas, a bringyour-own to-go container movement can also be born. An increasing number of people in North County have become more aware at the environmental cost of their daily actions. We are certainly not the first family to bring our own containers, but we hope that we may inspire others to help out restaurants and Mother Earth as well.

Securing Our eCity Foundation and CyberTECH is proud to announce this year’s CyberFest. Now in its 7th year, CyberFest promises to be one of the most exciting undertakings focused on the business community. The event is a gathering of cyber, infrastructure, law enforcement, InfraGard, military, and business professionals, where we will explore how cyber is now so interwoven into the business fabric that should it “break,” business as we currently know it will no longer exist. Bob Hanssen, the perpetrator, was actually working for the Russian Federation. Other topic areas include: Rise of the Robots, One World–A level Playing Field, Securing the Internet of Things, and Surviving a Cyber Disaster. The event also features Ambassador R. James Woolsey, former lead for the U.S. Central Intelligence and director of the CIA. He will provide his perspective on cyber and the world today. He will touch on how he believes cyber, global terrorism, energy, artificial intelligence and the Internet of Things are all inter-related. If nothing else, he is worth the price of admission and not to be missed. CyberFest takes place at Hilton La Jolla Torrey Pines. Breakfast, lunch and cocktail hour are included along with networking opportunities. Fees for the event are $125 pp. Early bird student fee is $49. Visit http://securingourecity. org/cyberfest-2016.

Dining, Sipping, and Drinking Bushfire Kitchen

If you’re a fan of Urban Plates, then you’ll love Bushfire! How lucky can Del Mar locals be, with the latest Bushfire Kitchen opening this October in the Beach Side Shopping Center (next to Starbucks and the Auto Club). This is cousin Clive and Brandon Barwin’s third location; their other two are in La Costa and Temecula. With 4-5 star ratings on Yelp and Trip Advisor, the Zagat review states “Organic, grass-fed BBQ is the name of the game at these popular ‘cue specialists in Temecula and Carlsbad (and now Del Mar), serving grass-fed hamburgers, antibiotic-free chicken and locally sourced vegetables alongside scratch-made breads and dressings.” We give Bushfire high ratings for quality, healthy, organic, humanely raised food with bold flavors and affordable prices. Originally from South Africa, Clive and Brandon enjoy serving something special, healthy and not bland, to awaken your taste buds – like their very tender, slow braised Angus Beef Brisket and Chipotle Short Ribs. Their slow braise oven cooks meats overnight and assures the meat falls off the bone. Their 1/2 lb. succulent burgers are made

from fresh, never frozen, organic grass-fed beef or lamb. We recommend The Californian that comes with sharp cheddar, local avocado, wild baby arugula, tomato, house-pickled red onions and basil pesto aioli sauce. Everything on the menu is made from scratch and their bread, rolls and buns are baked fresh in-house daily. Side dishes include baked sweet potato, organic brown rice, Himalayan Basmati rice, garlic mashed potatoes, bacon and baked beans and cooked-to- order fries. Try their premium hot sides and cold salads. One of our favorites is their Quinoa, Beet and Wild Arugula Salad. They have a kid’s menu, baked daily desserts, and serve California wines and craft beers on tap. Keeping conservation and the earth’s ecology in mind, to-go boxes are made from recycled cardboard, not Styrofoam. Bushfire is a warm, family-friendly, healthy environment, that you will be happy to call your second home. Del Mar Bushfire Kitchen is located at 2602 Del Mar Heights Rd, Del Mar 92014. Call (858) 461-0946 or visit www. bushfirekitchen.com for their other locations.

Le Papagayo

Long time local resident, owner of Bamboo 2 U on Coast Hwy 101, and neighbor of Le Papagayo, Judy Swain is a regular customer and so are tens of thousands of locals like her. The deal is that many nonlocals haven’t experienced the flavors and sounds of this quaint dining establishment on historic Coast Highway 101 in Leucadia, and that’s where we come in. We want everyone, near and far, to know about their unique and delicious fusion of Mediterranean and Latin American cuisine and also to know about their hang loose beachy vibe and local music that’s offered nightly. Certainly one of the most popular Encinitas/Leucadia hot spots, Le Papagayo is one of the coolest hangouts in North County. They have 4-5 star ratings on Yelp, OpenTable and Tripadvisor and are recent 2016 winners of the OpenTable Diners’ Award. Open for breakfast, try their eggs, omlettes, acai bowls, fresh fruit, pancakes, chicken fried steak, or their signature Loco Moco, which is a coconut sticky rice with mushroom beef gravy, 2 natural Angus beef patties, 2 organic eggs, with grilled teriyaki pineapple, drizzled with a mango pineapple

chili sauce, wow! Their lunch and dinner menu rocks and so does their Happy Hour menu with food and drink specials every day from 4-6pm and on Tuesdays all night long! Their Lobster Bisque is a local favorite as well as their Ahi Poke and Spring Rolls. Other favorites include Carne Asada, Duck Confit, Mahi Mahi and Shrimp Tacos. Their Happy Hour menu and regular menus offer a variety of quality, tasty and healthy items and will surely have something perfect for you. They’re open daily for breakfast, lunch and dinner until 11pm. Football fans check out their NFL Sunday Ticket games. Music fans, you’ll love their nightly local live music. Either inside or out along their bar on Hwy 101, or on their beautiful outdoor patio, enjoy a sangria or any of their house and specialty wines and craft beers. Local musical guests have included such names as Mystic Groove, Clint Westwood, Lou Shook and the Flounders, Blackwater Blues Boys, Gregory Michaels, John Bennett and Jim Volkert, Cody Carter, Triple Shot, Johnny C, Greenflash, Tolan Shaw, and many others. Le Papagayo is located at 1002 N. Coast Highway 101, Encinitas 92024. Call (760) 944-8252 or visit www.lepapagayoleucadia.com.

Rosati’s Pizza

If you’re from Chicago or the mid-west, then you know Rosati’s Pizza. The Chicago-style deep dish Italian pizza of Ferdinand Rosati began when he opened his restaurant in Chicago in 1906, on Taylor Street, a hundred and ten years ago! Back then, the pizza was oldworld with tomato sauce served on crispy bread. In 1927 Ferdinand’s son Saverio Rosati opened a Rosati’s on Pulaski Street. Skip ahead to 1964. That was when Saverio’s sons took over, opened ten locations, and now have close to 200 restaurants nationwide. Authentic Chicago-style, deep-dish pizza is tomato sauce and cheese pie in a deep-dish crust. This is the real deal! You can order yours like this or add an assortment of toppings. It’s important to note that other deep-dish pizzas have a doughy thick crust; but Rosati’s deep-dish crust is not doughy, but light, buttery and crispy; and so is the bottom of the pizza. I don’t know how they do this, but it’s a special craft. Their deepdish is absolutely delicious with mounds of Mozzarella and topped with Pomodoro tomatoes. It’s something you must add to your bucket list.

One word of caution: it takes about 30-45 minutes to bake this pie perfectly; so please plan accordingly. They also serve Chicago-style thin crust pizza and gluten-free thin crust pizza, too! Rosati’s offers build-your-own pasta, specialty pastas, calzone, salads, and desserts. Their pizza is world-famous and so are their signature sandwiches; e.g., try their signature Combo Sausage and Beef. They have over 30 local craft beer taps. Happy Hour is Monday through Friday from 3-7pm. They have beer and wine specials and 1/2 off appetizers. Bring the family and friends and enjoy a real Chicago-style meal indoors or, on a warm summer night, on their spacious patio. Clip their $5 OFF or their $10 OFF coupon from their ad or from our coupon pages or download from http://northcountysun.com/category/coupons/. Not valid with other offers or specials. Must present coupon. Rosati’s Pizza is located at 337 N. El Camino Real, Encinitas 92024. They offer local delivery and catering. Call ahead 760-452-2007.

Dining, Sipping, and Drinking Stoked!

How far in advance should you book your company holiday party or your wedding party? The simple answer, of course, is to book it as far in advance as possible, especially if you want a really great deal! Chris Vulovic, owner and proud San Elijo resident, has a history of success as a corporate CEO, consultant, caterer, and author of “I Love Food” (available on Amazon). She has put together a restaurant that is perfect for small, medium, or large party gatherings and has a thriving catering business. Stoked! is the perfect spot for hungry and thirsty locals, kids going to and from school, foodies, and wedding/party planners. Nothing brings in a steady flow of happy customers more than great food, lovely drinks, value, and excellent service. Stoked!, located in San Elijo Hills/San Marcos, offers the perfect recipe for the family on the go or the business person wanting to impress an important client. The indoor ambiance is comfortable and attractive; and the

back patio, built around a rock fireplace (hence the name Stoked!), is perfect for intimate dining or sipping craft beer or Spanish wine. Excite your taste buds and your visual and textural senses, with fresh and healthy food. Stop in for a steamy hot latte or a bowl of homemade soup. Lunch is served from 11:30 AM to 3:00 PM. They always have a daily soup and their sandwiches are some of the best in North County. We recommend the breakfast Killer Club Sandwich, and especially the roasted and caramelized Vegetable Sandwich on rustic bread with layers of roasted vegetables and melted mozzarella, drizzled with pesto. Absolutely delicious! Other favorites include their Stoked Chili, Fish Tacos, and Caprese Salad. Please call or check their website for their live entertainment and Happy Hour schedule. Stoked! is open daily and located at 1215 San Elijo Road in San Marcos (San Elijo Hills) 92078. Call 760-798-1322 or visit www.cafestoked.com.

Bruegger’s Bagels

Bruegger’s Bagels is open every day of the year including Thanksgiving. Try a Bruegger’s Turkey Sandwich on a hot-from-the-oven Jalapeno and cheese or onion bagel. Or start your day with one of their classic breakfast sandwiches with an egg and your choice of peppered bacon, ham, sausage or turkey sausage on a hot fresh bagel. We recommend their new Mediterranean Bagel breakfast sandwich or their Greek Goddess lunch sandwich. Of course, our all-time favorite is their classic Smoked Salmon and Cream Cheese, stacked high on a fresh bagel with sliced tomato, red onions and capers. During October and November try one of their delicious pumpkin bagels with pumpkin cream cheese. In addition to their famous bagels, breakfast sandwiches and bagel sandwiches, Bruegger’s also offers a healthier “Under 500 Calorie” menu. If you are a calorie counter, try one of their Skinny Bagels.

Guests can now order any of Bruegger’s 15-plus varieties “skinny,” due to Bruegger’s unique slicing process. Instead of changing the recipe of its time-tested, New York-style bagel, Bruegger’s slices the bagels thinner using a process that removes approximately one-third of the bagel’s center but preserves its unique eggshell crust and delicious toppings. The result is a lower calorie bagel without sacrificing variety or taste. Bruegger’s operates 300 bakeries in North America with 8 bakeries in San Diego. Renowned for its award winning bagels, Bruegger’s offers a wide variety of freshly prepared breakfast and lunch options made with high quality ingredients served with its unique brand of hospitality. Visit Brueggers in La Costa at 7680 El Camino Real, Carlsbad 92009, or find a location near you at www.brueggers.com.

Unmatched in its role, the museum showcases and shares the colorful surfing history with the thousands of visitors, both young and old, that come through its doors to experience the lifestyle of the sport through its art and culture. The board of directors, staff and volunteers of the California Surf Museum invite you to come celebrate the California Surf Museum’s 30th anniversary at the 9th Annual Gala Fundraiser on the ocean view terrace at the SpringHill Suites Marriott, located at 110 N. 18th Annual Big Horse Corn Maze Festival October 1-30 Bigger and better than ever, the Corn Maze at Big Horse Feed on Highway 79 and Butterfield Stage Road in Temecula, California returns for its 18th year from October 1-30. Go celebrate the Fall and Harvest season – it only takes a little determination and a lot of fun to find your way out of the maze. The Festival is open Saturday-Sunday from 10am-5pm and Tuesday-Friday from 1-5pm, except for October 30, when it closes at 3pm. The theme for the weekend of October 8-9 is Salute to our Military; October 15-16 is an All American Weekend

with apple pie and baseball; and October 22-23 promises to be exciting as Old Fashioned Farm Days lets you churn butter, race pigs and pan for gold. Show your skill in the pie-eating contest, try bobbing for apples, and enter the potato sack races. Every weekend in October holds exciting and challenging activities at the Big Horse Corn Maze Festival, which opens on October 1 and begins with Classic Car Craze at the Corn Maze from 9am-3pm. The Classic Car Craze hosts a variety of cars from Hot Rods to Antiques and Muscle Cars. As the first weekend’s theme is Old Fashioned Rock’n’Roll, there is also a whole lot of rock and roll fun for the family. It’s always corn-y and crazy with the Pumpkin Patch, pony rides, hay ride, pillow jump, animal

sharing center, mini maze, pig races, rock wall, corn cannon and face painting. The Corn Maze is open every day beginning October 1 and the Pumpkin Patch is open every day. Please note that the maze is closed for maintenance on October 3, 10 and 17. The Maze is now scheduling field trips for pre-school and primary education classes in the morning on weekdays, when hundreds of children come visit during the month of October. They all receive an educational presentation from the “Scare Crows” as well as a walk around the petting zoo and a trip to the pumpkin patch on a hay wagon ride. Clip the $1 OFF MAZE Coupon from our coupon pages or download it from http://northcountysun.com/category/ coupons. This is a Temecula tradition and if you have yet to come out, you are challenged to come out and get lost. For more information visit www.bighorsecornmaze. com or call (951) 389-4621.

The Karnevil fatal freak show stars Dr. Marvel S. Mayhem and his travelling troupe of bloodthirsty curiosities. Headlining these vexing oddities are the unsettling devious deviations and mutant aberrations. Climb aboard the Haunted

The Walking Dead wander beside you as you move down the cold, dark, dreaded path of the deceased and departed. Visit www.thescreamzone.com. It includes a separate maze called “The Experiment,” where you run the gauntlet past horror icons Freddy, Jason, Michael Meyers, The Ring Girl, The Exorcist Girl, and Annabelle. Autopsy, just remember that no one can hear your scream in outer space. Visit www. hauntedtrail.net. The doors at the Haunted Hotel downtown San Diego are open through October 31 and is located in the heart of the Gaslamp Quarter. The Hotel is loaded with new demented, hair-raising effects that are so real that victims run screaming for their life as they try to escape. Visit www. hauntedhotel.com.

Casey Turner Launches Intergalactic Music Career By Hayley Ulle

When San Diego resident and singer/songwriter Casey Turner first launched his music career, he never dreamed that his songs would literally launch into outer space. Turner’s single “Waves on the Ocean” was recently released on the International Space Station when astronaut Robert S. Kimbrough blasted off from Russia on September 23. While other musicians’ music has been played in orbit, “Waves on the Ocean” seems to be the first island reggae song released in space. In a YouTube interview published by www.caseyturnermusic.com, Turner said that he had just returned from a tour in Hawaii when he received a surprising e-mail invitation to release his music in space. The musician chose

“Waves on the Ocean,” which was recorded with the reggae band Uluroots in Bali. “The lyrics to Waves on the Ocean just…make sense for an International Space Station release,” he said, adding that he hopes his music sends “good…energy out into the world.” Turner creates most of his music with a ukulele and guitar, which lend themselves well to the mellow, beachy style of his songs. Find Casey Turner’s music on YouTube at https://youtu.be/-mNPuAEMg9s.

Home Sellers Advisory Advisory #1: Beware of the “High Price” listing presentation. These agents have one goal and that is to get a signed listing contract by presenting an unrealistic high list price, and knowing that the seller will eventually have to lower the list price to sell their home. Two clever responses can help sellers mitigate this scenario. Advisory #2: Beware of the “Universal Phone Call” that goes something like this; “Hello, I have a buyer interested in buying your home, are you interested in selling?” Truth is very few of these solicitation calls have a specific buyer. If you answer yes to their question, then simply ask them to put their buyer’s name on a “single party” listing agreement, so your obligation to pay a reduced commission is only if that specific buyer buys your home.

Advisory #3: Beware of the “Great Promise”. These agents convincingly tell you that they list and sell most of their own listings, with no other agent involved . . . and because of this, they will lower the total listing commission from 5 or 6% to 3% when they sell your home themselves. The truth is, very few agents list and sell their own listings! This is easily verified by an MLS printout of SOLD listings that clearly shows the listing and selling offices involved in all the sales. Are they the same offices? . . . probably not. Advisory #4: Beware of a lower than normal commission posted in the MLS to “buyer’s broker”. While commissions are negotiable, money motivates sales people. Buyer’s agents typically expect a minimum of 2.5% for selling a median priced home . . . and they deserve it!

If less than 2.5% is proposed by your listing agent, ask them for an MLS printout of the listings for your neighborhood that will clearly show the commissions paid to other buyer brokers. Rarely will you see less than 2.5%. You want maximum agent motivation to sell your home by offering at least 2.5% to the buyer’s broker. This advisory to home sellers is provided as a courtesy by David Boe, owner and broker of Boe Real Estate; sharing 30-years of local broker experience from selling over 1,000 homes. David Boe personally handles all the negotiations and required paperwork. David Boe has saved his buyers and sellers thousands of dollars with reduced commissions to sellers and rebates to buyers. You can reach David Boe at his direct line at (760) 846-0486 or visit www.DavidBoe.com. CalBRE#00672393.

They are judged by Coalition members while surfing to be recognized in the top 6 spots of 17 separate events. The awards ceremony is scheduled for 1:00 pm on Sunday. The surfing event will have an auction for surf items. The Coalition is excited to have special guest local surf legend Mike Doyle in attendance for his book signing of Morning Glass. Refreshments are provided, including lunch for the surfers both days. Every year, Coalition members are invited to return to the Reef. Cardiff Reef has been the venue for all 22 years of the event. Only Coalition members are invited to participate in the competition; however, the public is welcome to attend and watch. The ages of the participants vary from 13 to over 70 years old. The president of Swami’s Surfing Association, Marcelo Lobos, says, “I look forward to seeing all our sisters and brothers once again come together to challenge and push each other to do our best out in the waves that we love so much.” Swami’s Surfing Association helps divide the proceeds of the event to several organizations, including Blind Surf, Swami’s Scholarship Fund, Beach Clean Ups, and Surfaid. Return to the Reef is sponsored in part by Hansen’s Surfboards. For more information visit www. swamissurfingssoc.org.

Save Hundreds or Thousands of Dollars By Having Dental Work Done In Tijuana By Andy Lee I have a very good dental plan, but it doesn’t cover gums, molar crowns, some root canals, bridges, etc. I recently cracked the porcelain of a 15-year old crown and it wasn’t covered under my dental insurance. I called a few San Diego dental offices and was quoted between $1,100–$1,500 for a porcelain over metal crown. I went online to look at dentist reviews, and found a dentist in Tijuana, Shirley Baker, D.D.S. She was advertising permanent porcelain crowns for $320. Her Englishspeaking receptionist convinced me that I should give it a try. The next morning I drove to the border and parked my car on the U.S. side and walked across. It’s a bit of a walk and you should bring a friend. The dental office had a yellow taxi waiting for me (no charge!) The driver spoke perfect English and in 5 minutes we arrived at the office. There was a coffee shop on the first floor lobby. I bought a latte. The elevator woman opened the elevator door and

used her card and pushed the 3rd floor button for me. I opened the door and the office looked just as nice as any dental office in the U.S. and better than most. I filled out a detailed dental history form. There was a woman sitting next to me who told me her husband was getting a root canal and that they had been coming here for six years. They too live in San Diego. Dr. Baker and everyone there spoke perfect English and were very professional. After an X-ray the doctor and hygienist went to work. They gave me an iPod to listen to music. After removing the cracked crown she took another X-ray because she found a large cavity below the gum line under the old crown. She proceeded to remove the decay, filled the cavity, took an impression for a new crown, and gave me a temporary crown. I returned in 10 days for the permanent crown, and it looks more natural than my other two crowns. Total cost was $320 plus $50 for the filling. I saved over $1,000. A taxi drove me back to the border (no charge). I saved over $1,000 and the experience was great. Here is Dr. Shirley Baker’s number (619) 270-2165. Please let them know you read about this in the North County Sun.

O’side Turkey Trot Adds Senior Walk-Trot November 24, Thursday, 10am-2:30pm Downtown Oceanside celebrates the 11th Annual Pacific Marine Credit Union O’side Turkey Trot on Thanksiving Day with the return of PMCU as the title sponsor, and an added senior fitness event the day before. According to race director Kathy Kinane, the event benefits 60+ nonprofits annually and has put Oceanside on the map nationally as a place for active families to live, work, and play. Runner’s World Magazine named the event a “Top Trot” in the country for the past two years. This national recognition has helped attract participants from 46 states and 460 cities. “We get people out on Thanksgiving morning to move

their feet before they eat,” said Kinane. “The Trot team competition has always been very robust with families, cities, schools and businesses of all sizes competing for the bragging rights of largest team. For the non-competitive participants, we have a hilarious costume contest and a herd of local entertainers along the beautiful seaside courses.” The O’side Turkey Trot features a 10K Harbor/Pier Run, 5K Run/Walk and multiple kids’ races. Since its inception in 2006, the event has grown from 2,200 to 10,000 participants, with the largest growth coming from baby boomers over 60 years of age. To satisfy the interest from the active retiring population, organizers and Tri-City Medical Center have created

an adjunct event, the Senior Festival of Miles, a walking/jogging race for seniors. This new event is being held on the day before Thanksgiving and features some of the fastest seniors in the country as well as walkers, joggers and “walkers with walkers.” Waves of seniors, divided into age groups, start at 10am and continue until 2:30pm. For more information about the Turkey Trot visit www. osideturkeytrot.com.

The $11.4 million sports complex is now the home court for Cougar volleyball and basketball games. The tall 25,000 square foot building, simply called the Sports Center, seats 1,400 and is part of the University’s plan–now two years into a three-year process–to join the NCAA as a Division II school. The Sports Center is the latest building to go up following a $44 million Student Union Building complete with a bookstore, activity and study rooms, restaurants, dining area, and an outdoor amphitheatre. Other structures recently built on campus include a parking structure, a Student Health Center, a Resource Center for Veterans, and a state-of-the-art running track for track and field events.
