The San Diego Civic Theatre La Cage Aux Folles August 7-12 The critically acclaimed production of La Cage Aux Folles starring George Hamilton and Christopher Sieber, plays at the San Diego Civic Theater August 7-12. La Cage Aux Folles tells the story of Georges, the owner of a glitzy nightclub in lovely Saint-Tropez, and his partner Albin, who moonlights as the glamorous chanteuse Zaza. When Georges’ son brings his fiancé’s conservative parents home to meet the flashy pair, the bonds of family are put to the test as the feather boas fly! La Cage Aux Folles is a tuneful and touching tale of one family’s struggle to stay together... stay fabulous... and above all else, stay true to themselves!
Les Misérables August 28-September 2 Cameron Mackintosh presents a brand new 25th anniversary production of Boublil & Schönberg’s legendary musical, Les Misérables, with glorious new staging and dazzlingly reimagined scenery inspired by the paintings of Victor Hugo. This new production has been acclaimed by critics, fans and new audiences and is breaking box office records wherever it goes and will play at The San Diego Civic Theatre August 28-September 2. Based on Victor Hugo’s classic novel, Les Misérables is an epic and uplifting story about the survival of the human spirit. The magnificent score of Les Misérables includes the classic songs “I Dreamed a Dream,” “On My Own,” “Stars,” “Bring Him Home,” “Do You Hear the People Sing?,” “One Day More,” “Empty Chairs at Empty Tables,” “Master Of The House” and many more. The San Diego Civic Theatre is located at 3rd and B Street, downtown San Diego. For more information, visit www.broadwaysd.com.
The La Jolla Playhouse The Nightingale August 1-5 A compelling contemporary musical based on Hans Christian Andersen’s classic tale, The Nightingale tells the story of a young emperor in ancient China, whose luxurious but constricted life inside the walls of the Forbidden City is upended by the song of an extraordinary bird that lives beyond his reach. With music of Grammy- and Tony Award winning pop composer/musician Duncan Sheik, book and lyrics by Tony and Grammy Award winner Steven Sater, and direction by Tony Award nominee and Playhouse favorite Moisés Kaufman, The Nightingale captivates audiences with its poetic pop sensibility. Tickets $40. An Iliad August 11 – September 9 On a bare stage, a storyteller emerges from the back of the theatre to re-tell Homer’s The Iliad, one of the oldest stories in Western civilization. The elements are familiar; the 10 year siege of Troy, the Greeks and Trojans locked in brutal combat, the heroic and final battle between Achilles and Hector. But this storyteller points at something more in the epic text. In this eye-opening version, we are on the front lines of every major war in history, reliving a futile
struggle that has replayed itself over thousands of years. An Iliad transports us through time to feel the glory and honor of war, as well as the loneliness and pain it leaves in its wake. Tickets $26-$51. Glengarry Glen Ross September 18 - October 21 Winner of the Pulitzer Prize for drama, Glengarry Glen Ross is David Mamet’s scorching play about a group of desperate salesmen in a Chicago real estate office. When a contest pits the men against each other, they resort to manipulation, bribery and even theft to keep their jobs. The Darwinian struggle that ensues is a stinging indictment of a culture that rewards the strong, punishes the weak and values success above all else. Tickets $36-$69. The La Jolla Playhouse is located at 2910 La Jolla Village Drive, La Jolla. For more information, contact (858) 5501010 or visit www.lajollaplayhouse.org.

August 16 – 19 Oceanside International Film Festival (OIFF) opens Thursday, August 16, at 5 pm with a red carpet arrival of the film industry’s stars, followed by a reception of filmmakers at Star Theatre, 402 North Coast Hwy, Oceanside. The day continues at Star with refreshments and appetizers, a Hollywood-style Polynesian performance, and screening of Guest Feature Film “Callous” - winner of previous OIFF – a narrative film about the evils of mental and physical abuse towards children within their own families. (Although the material is rated R, it has no sexual content.) The evening concludes with a Q&A session. Among the “official selections” are works by independent filmmakers from Canada, Australia, Asia, Europe, and America. Many films are made by children and for children, in line with the fundraising nature of the festival’s parent non-profit orga-

The Sky’s the Limit When it Comes to Interior Design Owners, designers and partners, Sandra and Shimon Krispel, are celebrating the 20th Anniversary of Sky International Design. It all began when they met in the most romantic city in the world, Paris, France. It was there that they realized they had so much in common. They combined their creative and artistic backgrounds, took numerous trips around the world, and were mentored by the best of the best in the interior design industry: professors, architects and interior designers. They relocated in 1991, settled down to pursue their dream, and opened their interior design business here in beautiful San Diego. Together, over the past 20 years, they’ve designed hotels, resorts, retail stores and restaurants, as well as many residential homes for some of the most demanding and prestigious clients here and abroad. Sandra points out, “We love the design process; the attention to detail, partnering with our clients and collaborating with architects, contractors and artisans. It’s important to us that our clients’ personalities shine throughout the spaces they inhabit.” Influenced by travel, art, music, and fashion, Sky International Design incorporates the essence of these subjects in each project, whether in metaphor or in the form of custom furniture, or creating a color palette. It’s time to turn your home into your dream home. Call Sandra and Shimon Krispel at (858) 880-6458 or, for more information, visit www.skyinternationaldesign.com.

It’s the Lucky Three for Haim Knister Celebrating His Newest Haim Salon Location at the Park Hyatt Aviara Resort From his beginnings as a stylist apprentice in Tele Aviv with one of Israel’s most noted professionals, to training under Vidal Sassoon in London, Haim Knister has enjoyed a very successful career in the beauty and fashion industry. In 1991, after living in San Diego for a few years, Haim opened Haim Ltd. Salon, a full-service exclusive salon, specializing in color, at Del Mar Plaza. Building a salon with the most talented and dedicated hair stylists, with a relaxed atmosphere, and a friendly ambiance with a “touch of class” that distinguishes his salon from others, was Haim’s goal, and still is. In 2009 he opened a second salon at the Grand Del Mar Resort, the only triple five star resort in the country, and most recently, a third salon at the Park Hyatt Aviara Resort. For more than three decades in the hair industry, Haim has worked with Logics and L’Oreal and for the last fifteen years has shared his knowledge and experience as a premier educator for Eufora International, as well as being one of the nation’s leading Eufora salons. And yet his commitment does not end there. Haim believes in giving back to the community. He has consis-
tently raised money for charities such as Child Help, United through Reading, Las Damas, United Cerebral Palsey’s Dia Del Sol’s Beach & Country Guild, and Look Good Feel Better Cancer organization. Recently, Haim selected the Semper Fi Fund to benefit from his Grand Opening celebration at the Park Hyatt. According to Haim, “I pride myself on raising money to help organizations whenever I can….it gives me great satisfaction.” The local community is important to Haim as well. Both the Park Hyatt Aviara and the Grand Del Mar Resort offer complimentary valet parking. Building loyal clients that return to Haim Salon is the key for Haim and his awardwinning staff’s success. Visit the newest Haim Salon at the Park Hyatt Aviara Resort located at 7100 Aviara Resort Drive, Carlsbad, CA 92011, or call (760) 603-6869 or visit www.haimltdsalon.com.

The City of Carlsbad’s William D. Cannon Art Gallery examines the studio work of a number of artists who have produced public art pieces for the City in its latest exhibition entitled, “Public Artists, Private Works.” Since 1985, more than 30 regional artists have been commissioned to make works for the City’s Art in Public Places Program. The exhibition offers the opportunity to see the personal work of some of these artists, including TJ Dixon and James Nelson, Kim Emerson, Raul Guerrero, Paul Hobson, James Hubbell, Ron Juncal, Christopher Lee, and DeLoss McGraw. “Public Artists, Private Works” is on exhibition through September 16 at the William D. Cannon Art Gallery in Carlsbad.
Artists that create artwork for public art commissions often create very different work in their studios. From exquisite black and white photographs and whimsical large-scale paintings to sand-painted canvases and hand-made paper abstracts, “Public Artists, Private Works” includes an array of media quite different from those that represent each artist in the public collection. The Cannon Art Gallery is located at 1775 Dove Lane off El Camino Real and is open to the public Tuesdays through Sundays. For information call (760) 602-2021 or visit www. carlsbadca.gov/arts.

This year’s theme is “The Grape Escape” so expect to see entries about Escondido attractions. The free community festival takes place in Grape Day Park, where it began way back in 1908. Situated downtown in the heart of the city, it is a beautiful park with mature trees that is ringed by cultural institutions including the Escondido History Center, City Hall and the California Center for the Arts, Escondido. Grape stomping is one of the highlights of the festival. Come prepared to climb into a big vat of grapes and feel the squish between your toes! It’s an experience you won’t soon forget. Grape Day has always included free grapes to eat.
The entertainment stage in the middle of the park features a mix of musicians and dancers. A fun zone with bounce house and carnival games where everyone is a winner keeps the kids happy. There are periodic contests in front of the stage including gunny sack races and hula hoops. Adults enjoy relaxing in the new beer and wine garden. Shop the Country Store bake sale and if you’re lucky, you can buy some of Marie’s famous grape pie. A wide variety of craft and commercial vendors will tempt you with their wares. You can learn about local non-profit organizations and talk to politicians. Explore local history by examining Branch 22’s display of steam powered farm equipment. Visit the Army of the West’s encampment whose folks are in period costume. The Escondido History Center organizes Grape Day each year. Their Bandy Blacksmith Shop is busy with demonstrations all day. Grape Day Park is located at 321 N. Broadway, Escondido. For more information or directions contact the Escondido History Center at (760) 743-8207 or visit www. escondidohistory.org.

Del Mar Celebrates 75th Year of Thoroughbred Horse Racing 37-Day Meet Runs Through September 5 We’ve Got Free Tickets! Seventy-five years ago a Hollywood icon, Bing Crosby, had a show business idea. Why don’t I get together with some of my movie star pals, build a little racetrack down by the sea, race all day, party all night and leave the cares of the world behind. The place he had in mind was the seaside community of Del Mar. And the racetrack in 1937, called simply Del Mar, grew from a quiet, little country getaway to be one of America’s premier gathering spots for both Thoroughbred sport and Southern California fun in the sun. Down through these past 75 years many noteworthy and memorable horses, people and events have unfolded on the 350-acre state fairgrounds that Del Mar calls home. For instance, after a popular opening year, Crosby put together a winner-take-all match race for the then-remarkable sum of $25,000 featuring his horse Ligaroti, against the most famous horse in the country –
Seabiscuit. He broadcast the race coast to coast on his weekly radio variety hour, which was the most popular show in America. After “The Biscuit” won a thriller by a nose in track-record time, the once-obscure little cavalry grounds by the sea was known to one and all. The stars came and played and Del Mar’s style was born. Lots of competition mixed with lots of fun, with a dash of laid-back mellow that had California written all over it. Eddie Read, the track’s first publicist, coined the phrase that fit then— and still does today: “Del Mar’s the place where nobody’s in a hurry but the horses.” Since then, dozens of champions have raced on Del Mar’s tracks down through the decades, starting with horses like Seabiscuit and racing forward to names like Native Diver, Cigar, Silver Charm and Zenyatta. Hall of Fame riders like Bill Shoemaker, Laffit Pincay, Jr., Chris McCarron, Kent Desormeaux and Mike Smith have worked out of the track’s jockey room. And Hall of Fame trainers like Charlie Whittingham, Ron McAnally, Robert Frankel, Neil Drysdale and Bob Baffert have walked the shedrows on its backstretch. Mark your calendar: Mondays and Tuesdays are dark; Sunday, August 26 is the Million Dollar TVG Pacific Classic; Saturday August 4 is the Western Chili Cookoff
and Salsa Contest; Saturday August 11 is Blanket Giveaway; Saturday August 18 is the Beer Fest; and every Friday is the 4 O’Clock Friday Summer Concert Series (free with purchase of race entrance ticket or $20 at the door). Here’s the lineup for the Concert Series: 8/3 Steel Pulse, 8/4 Cake, 8/10 The Offspring, 8/17 Michael Franti & Spearhead, 8/18 Ben Harper, 8/24 Jimmy Cliff, 8/31 Ozomatli, 9/1 Reggae Festival Featuring Ziggy Marley Plus Beer Fest. Win Tickets! How about heading to the track this year already a winner with a pair of free tickets! It’s easy to win either Corporate seats or Turf Club tickets to Del Mar Thoroughbred Horse Racing. Just visit www.HotinNorthCounty.com and fill in the simple entry form. Ticket winners will be randomly selected and notified by phone and email. Some restrictions apply. Only one entry per person is permitted. Must be 21 years or older to win tickets. Tickets do not include Pacific Classic. Best of luck! See you this summer at the finish line at Del Mar Thoroughbred Horse Racing!

So often we neglect taking care of our eyes and our vision. Sometimes we don’t pay enough attention if we have dry eyes, blurred vision, or easily get eye infections. Don’t take your eyes for granted and take the time to make an appointment with someone that has an extensive background in ocular diseases and conditions. If you are looking for a caring and professional optometrist, then we recommend Dr. Kristin Peterson- Salgado of Solana Beach Family Optometry. Dr. Kristin Peterson-Salgado graduated from the University of California, Davis in 1993 with high honors then went on and graduated from the University of California, Berkeley School of Optometry in 1997. Post and Search for Classes, Lessons, Camps, Schools in North County for Free Carlsbad, CA – Aug 1, 2012 - Print Zone Entertainment, a Carlsbad-based media group, now offers a new, one-stop free web directory for anyone to post and search for any type of educational and recreational classes for adults and kids in North County. The new web directory, called www. NorthCountyClasses.com, is designed and developed for teachers, instructors, colleges, universities, private and public businesses and institutions, fitness centers, city parks and recreation departments, activity centers, preschools, and kid’s camps to advertise their classes, lessons and kid’s camps for free. The website www.NorthCountyClasses.com has been in operation for more than six years but has recently redeveloped its platform with the latest in search engine technology. There’s nothing else like it in North County. The concept is similar to Craigslist because of its free usage and user-friendly search capability, but the North County Classes web directory is more narrow and defined, where-
as www.NorthCountyClasses.com is a free local marketplace specifically for North County residents and visitors. Andy Lee, CEO and Publisher of Print Zone Entertainment, the North County Sun, www.HotinNorthCounty. com and www.NorthCountyClasses.com, says, “There are very few places where the Boys and Girls Clubs, YMCAs, parks and recreation departments, preschools, private schools, private music, yoga, dance instructors, or kid’s camps can list their classes, especially for free. Most private teachers, and many places that offer classes, have a very limited advertising budget or none at all. I believe we’re filling a real need by offering North County a free site for instructors and students.” The site offers a place for “Blogging,” a “Forum,” a “live RSS feed” of local school news, an organic search engine, and categories for all types of “adult classes,” “kid’s classes,” and a “kid’s orbit” to locate schools, camps, after school services, play places, and birthday party services.
Paid advertising opportunities are available on the site but are limited. Banner ads are only $49 a month. For advertising information, please call (760) 635-9100 or email info.northcountyclasses@gmail.com.

Stagecoach Days at Old Town: Celebrating the West on the Move August 4, 11, 18, 25, Saturdays, Noon-4pm Old Town San Diego State Historic Park celebrates travel and transportation in the era of real horsepower during Stagecoach Days, from noon to 4pm on Saturdays in August. The free event features a different theme each Saturday including Soldiers and Citizens, TwainFest and Vaquero Day. Attendees enjoy afternoons filled with activities that reflect life in early San Diego and celebrate the West on the move. Through vignettes, demonstrations, living history activities, stories and songs, visitors gain an appreciation for early modes of transportation and daily life. It’s been more than a century since the last stage line operated in San Diego. Beginning in 1857, stage lines passed through rural San Diego moving passengers, freight and mail. These new services helped bring the outside world closer to the emerging frontier community that we know today as San Diego. The Stagecoach Days schedule: August 4—Trades That Shaped Westward Expansion — As towns developed in the West so did the need for specialized trades and artisans. Old Town San Diego presents pivotal 19th century trades that shaped the community of San Diego.
August 11—Vaquero Drive—Cattle was the single most important economic resource for Southern California for more than 50 years. Vaquero Drive provides an opportunity to learn about the hide and tallow trade, chuck wagon cooking, roping, branding, saddle making and more. August 18—TwainFest—The festival marks 102 years of Mark Twain’s passing and celebrates the American author as well as some of his peers. Excerpts from famous works will be read aloud by costumed San Diego actors at a variety of park venues throughout the day. August 25—Soldiers and Citizens—In the mid-1840s, when California went to war with Mexico, United States troops were stationed in San Diego County and fought here in an effort to support the war. This day features military practices that changed San Diego forever. Old Town San Diego State Historic Park is proud to offer these free activities for adults and children of all ages. The park is located on San Diego Avenue and Twiggs Street, conveniently located next to the Old Town Transit Center with Coaster, trolley and MTS bus service. For more information, go to www.parks.ca.gov/oldtownsandiego.

Myths & Facts About Roller Derby Myth: Roller Derby is staged, the whole game is fake and the winner is decided before the players take to the track. Fact: The roller derby of today is real and is thought of as more of a sport than a spectacle. The skaters involved are athletes and take the sport very seriously. They train hard every week and wear their bruises and scars with pride. Myth: You can tell the hits and fights are fake because they don’t get hurt. Fact: All skaters are required to wear protective padding and train to fall in order to minimize injuries to themselves and others. But injuries can and do happen EMT and other trained medical personnel are present at all bouts to ensure skaters receive immediate medical attention in the case of an injury. Myth: Derby girls are rough and rowdy — nothing but trouble. Fact: Though they’re rough and tough on the track, this is a sports team dedicated to good sportsmanship. Their goal is to provide strong, positive female role models, give back to the community and promote the sport of roller derby (and have a little fun while they’re at it)

Sight-Impaired Surfers Hit the Beach September 16 On Sunday, Sept. 16, a surfing event for the sight impaired will be held at South Carlsbad State Beach in Carlsbad from 8am to 3pm. Blind participants experience the joy of surfing with the help of experienced volunteers. This is the 17th year that sight impaired youth and adults from all areas of San Diego have been invited to hit the waves under the supervision of expert surfers. The non-profit event is sponsored by the Swamis Surfing Association, the Encinitas Lions club, and the San Diego Surfing Academy. Bruce King, President of the Swamis Surfing Association and cofounder of the event said, “Its just a joy to see the look on their faces. As surfers we enjoy sharing our love for the sport,
the ocean and living each moment …like riding a wave.” Here is how it works: the individuals are outfitted with life vests, and then taken into the water along with 4 to 5 experienced surfers. We help the surfer lie on the board, only going about waist deep, and then push them into a wave. When the individual rides the wave towards the shore, there is a safety team lining the water around them at all time. King says, “Above all, this experience proves that just because you are disabled doesn’t mean you are not able to do many great things, and we are proud to promote that through this event.” For more information about this event please call (760) 436-7338.

36th Annual World Bodysurfing Championships at Oceanside Pier Aug 18-19, Saturday and Sunday
Photographs at The Wedge by Ron Romanosky www.romanoskyphoto.com
The public is invited to come out and enjoy a weekend of the best of the best in bodysurfing at the Oceanside Pier. Approximately 350 to 400 bodysurfers from around the world will once again be kicking, stroking, catching and competing at the 36th Annual World Bodysurfing Championships the weekend of August 18-19. The competition takes place adjacent to the Oceanside Pier where competition heats will begin at 6:15 am each day, last fifteen minutes at a time, and end around 1:00 pm. A minimum of two contestants per heat will advance to each next round. Wetsuits and fins on the feet will be permitted. On Saturday, Aug 18, 15-Minute Heats will begin at 6:15 am and finish at 1:30 pm. On Sunday, Aug 19, Finals are from 9:45 am – 1:00 pm, culminating with a 2:00 pm Awards Presentation Bodysurfers from around the world will compete in their respective age and gender divisions for trophies and prizes. The Men’s and Women’s Grand Champions will be crowned on Sunday afternoon, the final day at approximately 2:00 pm on August 19. The WBC reserves the right to change the projected schedule for various weather, surf conditions and quantity of competitors. For those unfamiliar with the sport of bodysurfing: bodysurfers ride waves without the assistance of any buoyant device such as a surfboard or bodyboard. Bodysurfers typically equip themselves only with a pair of specialized swim fins that help to optimize propulsion so it is easier to catch large and fast breaking waves. There are many techniques to catch and ride waves. Bodysurfers must time their launch, pick a direction, kick and stroke hard with feet and arms, and then use their back and outstretched arms, to ride the wave both sideways and downward. Turns can be performed by digging the shoulder into the wave, causing the bodysurfer to slide to the side of the wave and accelerate.

The San Diego Senior Games are trying to bring the State Championships to San Diego in 2013. This year over 2,000 athletes are expected to compete. An additional 1,000 volunteers and coaches also participate. San Diego continues to be one of the most successful Senior Games in California. The City of Oceanside, a big supporter, hosted the 1st North County Senior Games in April and May of this year. Athletes compete at the local level in 5-year age increments over the age of 50. Some sports are allowing 40 year olds and up to compete. There are 20 different sports recognized by Nationals. Each region may have as many exhibition sports as they wish. Winners of the exhibition games receive medals and t-shirts. Finishers in first, second and third places in their age group and category will be awarded Gold, Silver, and Bronze Medals respectively and may move on to compete at the State and National Championships. Via proclamations by The California State Assembly, US Congress, and US Senate the month of September is designated as Senior Olympics Recognition. For more information visit www.sdseniorgames.org.

Exiting the wave is key to safety, especially while riding big waves in shallow water. One maneuver is to roll sideways out of the wave letting the feet tumble forward. In stronger waves a rider must drop the head and execute a very rapid tumble forward to exit the wave, flipping the feet over as fast as possible. This must be done with no hesitation, to avoid injury. Advanced techniques include spins and barrel rolls. Reportedly, The World Bodysurfing Championships in Oceanside and the Pipeline Bodysurfing Classic on Oahu, Hawaii are the two biggest bodysurfing competitions in the world. The World Bodysurfing Championship began in 1977, and runs every August in Oceanside. Another long time SoCal contest is the Manhattan Beach Bodysurfing Contest, which is part of the International Surf Festival held in Manhattan Beach, California. This year the competition takes place the first week in August. It was originally formed by the Gillis Beach Bodysurfing Association, in Playa del Ray and dates back to 1964. It’s impossible to talk about bodysurfing without mentioning the most famous bodysurfing spot in the world, The Wedge in Balboa at Newport Beach, California, just up the coast from us, and featured on the front cover of this edition. Wave faces at The Wedge can reach upwards of 30 ft or more on big southern hemisphere and hurricanegenerated swells during the spring, summer, and fall. Known mainly for high performance bodysurfing and intense jaw dropping rides and wipeouts, these waves are created by swells hitting the jetty and rebounding into oncoming waves, creating the “wedge effect,” which results in peaks that can jack up to incredible sizes and shapes. The Wedge in Balboa Newport Beach is to bodysurfing what the Pipeline in Hawaii is to surfing. For more information, visit www.worldbodysurfing.org.
