Dralion – Cirque du Soleil at Valley View Casino Center We’re Giving Away Tickets! Cirque du Soleil is pleased to announce that Dralion will be performing in San Diego at Valley View Casino Center for seven performances. Fusing the 3,000 yearold tradition of Chinese acrobatic arts with the multidisciplinary approach of Cirque du Soleil, Dralion (pronounced “Dra-lee-on”) draws its inspiration from Eastern philosophy and its never-ending quest for harmony between humans and nature. The show’s name is derived from its two emblematic creatures: the dragon, symbolizing the East, and the lion, symbolizing the West. In Dralion, the four elements that govern the natural order take on a human form. Vigilucci’s Celebrates 10 Years with Wine and Dine For A Cause Oct. 23, 24, 25 In honor of their 10-year anniversary the Vigilucci Restaurant Group will be holding a series of dine out days with the hopes of raising money necessary to help the organization Cancer Angels of San Diego. Wine and Dine For A Cause was an idea that came about out of a desire to give back to a community that has shown so much patronage and support over the years. Founded in 2007, Cancer Angels of San Diego helps individuals living in this county who have been diagnosed with Stage IV cancer and are experiencing financial difficulties in meeting basic living expenses due to the extraordinary cost of their treatments, and most often, their inability to work due to their illness. Day
after day, they receive calls from newly‑diagnosed cancer patients seeking financial help through their patient programs. With your donations, they can answer their calls with a “Yes we can help!”, instead of placing them a waiting list. Wine And Dine For A Cause is being held October 23, 24 and 25 for lunch and dinner at all Vigilucci’s Locations from Carlsbad to Coronado. Mention this event and 10% of proceeds will go to The Cancer Angles of San Diego. For more information or a list of locations visit www.Vigiluccis. com. Food and the Brain: Hunger Satisfaction and How to Avoid Overeating By Jennifer Lee, Ph.D. The regulation of how much we eat and drink is a constant battle for many of us. Our brains and bodies use a combination of signals to indicate fullness: sensory signals (taste, smell), gastric signals (full bellies), and nutrient signals (our bodies tell our brains whether we are lacking in certain vitamins and minerals, etc.). But when something is delicious, how do we stop eating it? How do we make sure not to consume too much for our own good? Sensory-specific satiety is defined as the decrease in the perceived pleasantness of an eaten food relative to that of an uneaten food. In other words, we are satisfied once we have enough of something (e.g., chocolate), such that it doesn’t seem as appealing as something else (e.g., salty snacks). Sensory-specific satiety affects neuron activity in areas of the brain such as the hypothalamus and orbitofrontal cortex in humans and other primates. Also, when people rate a food or drink as tasting pleasant, there is increased activation in the orbitofrontal cortex. So sensory-specific satiety is a good thing: it sends signals to the brain that help us keep from overeating. But what kinds of factors influence sensory-specific satiety? For one, the more oral-sensory stimulation, the more satiety. The degree of oral-sensory stimulation depends on physical food properties like taste concentration and viscosity, but also depends on bite or sip size. So, yes, it’s true: foods with stronger flavors and scents tend to be more satisfying. And taking smaller bites can also help. Research has
found that increasing oral-sensory stimulation decreases overall intake in subjects who have free access to food and drink. For example, in one study, rats consumed 18% more orangeade when they took large sips than when they took small sips. The researchers hypothesized that this was due to the suppression of the rewarding effect of the caloric drink by sensory satiety, which is greater for consumption with small sips (lots of oral-sensory exposure) than large sips (less oral-sensory exposure). Another factor is the issue of liquids versus solids. Pure juices and smoothies, although containing good stuff, are highly caloric. Research reports that liquid foods provide a lower degree of oral-sensory stimulation than solid foods, even when the energy content is the same. Additionally, animals demonstrate less compensating responses (exercise, reduced feeding) after getting their calories from drinks compared to solid foods. Getting your calories from solid foods is always better if you’re trying not to consume too much; because liquids, try as they might, have a low satiating power. Also interesting is the fact that the volume of food eaten and the degree of sensory stimulation are more relevant than energy density regarding overall intake. In other words, animal studies have shown that eating a large amount of a low-caloric food that happens to be strong in flavor (like radicchio with vinaigrette) can be just as satisfying as eating a small amount of something highly caloric (like green bean casserole). Thus, energy content does not seem to be important for determining meal size. Finally, diet-drinkers beware: if you’re craving a sweet beverage, diet soda might not be the answer. (This is
coming from a big diet soda fan, so you can trust my unbiased reporting.) Neuroimaging studies (PET, fMRI, etc.) have shown different brain responses to solutions of sugars and non-caloric sweeteners in drinkable form. It seems that tasting a caloric (sucrose) solution activates taste and reward areas in the brain more than similar-tasting non-caloric (sucralose) solutions. Therefore, perhaps Diet Coke has a lower satiating power than regular Coke. So keep your satiety high and your energy intake down by taking smaller bites and keeping the flavors in your mouth as long as possible. Smoothies are tasty, but eating whole fruits is probably best. And eat things with strong flavors; they’re more likely to activate your satiety signals, and you might even eat a little less. Information in part from “Consumption of caloric and non-caloric versions of a soft drink differentially affects brain activation during tasting,” NeuroImage, 54 (2011) 1367-1374. egg and your choice of peppered bacon, ham, sausage or turkey sausage on a hot fresh bagel. We recommend trying their Better Cheddar Sandwich. This delicious sandwich comes with an egg patty with cheddar cheese, peppered bacon, and light garlic herb cream cheese on a fresh baked bagel, toasted if you wish. In addition to their famous bagels, breakfast sandwiches and bagel sandwiches, Bruegger’s also offers a healthier “Under 500 Calorie” menu. If you are a calorie counter, try one of their Skinny Bagels. Guests can now order any of Bruegger’s 15-plus varieties “skinny,” due to Bruegger’s unique slicing process. Instead of changing the recipe of its time-tested, New York-style bagel, Bruegger’s slices the bagels thinner using a process that removes approximately one-third of the bagel’s center but preserves its unique
eggshell crust and delicious toppings. The result is a lower calorie bagel without sacrificing variety or taste. Another healthy choice is their Skinny Zesty Egg White Sandwich. This comes with an egg white patty on a skinny sesame bagel, with turkey sausage, Swiss cheese and sundried tomato spread. Founded in 1983, Bruegger’s Enterprises, Inc. operates 300 Bruegger’s bakeries in North America. Renowned for its award winning bagels, Bruegger’s offers a wide variety of freshly prepared breakfast and lunch options made with high quality ingredients served with its unique brand of hospitality. Field grown pansies are better because the roots have never been squeezed into pots or a 6 pack. Bigger, stronger roots make a bigger stronger plant that performs better. All pansies love the sun but will be OK in partial sun. Pansies love to eat and need a drink of water when they get a little dry, and love attention. Hey, just like you! This means picking the nice fresh flowers and picking off the dead ones too. Treat your pansies right and they will bloom easily for months and months of trouble-free beauty.
To see what 14,000 pansies look like, plan to be at Weidner’s Gardens by 9am on Thursday, November 1. By close of day, there will still be thousands of pansies left to dig, but there will also be thousands of holes without pansies. Digging continues through the month of December. For the best selection come early, but even weeks later there will still be plenty of pansies to choose from. Get a free gallon of Weidner’s “Good Stuff” fertilizer! Bring a one-gallon jug between Nov 1-7 and Weidner’s will fill it up with the “Good Stuff.” Limit one gallon per adult customer. Weidner’s Gardens is open daily 9am - 4:30pm except Tuesdays, and CLOSED the whole month of OCTOBER. Weidner’s is located at 695 Normandy Rd, Encinitas, 92024. Gates open at 8am. Digging begins at 9am. Visit www.weidners.com for more information.

Family Discovery Days Halloween-themed Event at San Elijo Lagoon Oct. 20-21, 1-4 pm There won’t be a Creature from the Black Lagoon, but that’s a good thing. San Elijo Lagoon Conservancy and County of San Diego Parks and Recreation present Family Discovery Days on October 20 and 21, with an emphasis on Halloween. As part of the popular Family Days series, the annual “NotSo-Scary Estuary” will be presented for children ages 2-12. Costumes are encouraged and volunteers and Rangers will treat guests to an exciting introduction to the wonders of wetlands. Kids can create lollipop spiders and animal facemasks, feel animal pelts, and make animal tracks in the sand. In addition, there is trick-or-treating along the “Haunted Hike” nature trail, where clues help families look and listen for resident wildlife.
You’ll learn about nocturnal creatures and their wanderings through live animal presentations at 2pm each day. For example, did you know some bats live up to 40 years and can eat 600 mosquitoes in just one hour? Find out more in the “Bat Cave.” Children will be shown how to use their senses to help a mother bat find her baby. The setting of Not-So-Scary Estuary takes place at San Elijo Lagoon Nature Center, located at 2710 Manchester Avenue in Cardiff-by-the-Sea. This 1,000-acre urban oasis offers seven miles of trails and glimpses into rare plants and animals, especially visiting birds during the winter season, a natural migration known as the Pacific Flyway. For more information on Family Discovery Days at San Elijo Lagoon Nature Center contact the Nature Center at (760) 634-3026 or visit www.SanElijo.org/family-days.

Cancer Angels of San Diego 3rd Annual Walk & Celebration of Life
The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society Hosts 14th Annual Light the Night Walk
Oct. 13, 4pm Walk, 6pm Dinner
The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, the world’s largest voluntary health agency dedicated to blood cancer, is hosting its 14th Annual Light the Night Walk on November 2 at Petco Park in San Diego. The Light the Night Walk is an inspirational two-mile walk that brings together thousands of individuals to raise funds for lifesaving blood cancer research and critical patient and family services. “More than 957,000 Americans are battling leukemia, lymphoma and myeloma and it’s our goal to raise money to help those individuals live better, longer lives. The Walk is our opportunity to do just that and pay tribute and commemorate lives touched by cancer,” said Kristin Sacco, Deputy Executive Director of the San Diego/Hawaii Chapter. “This event is an experience unlike any other and truly brings light to the dark world of cancer. I guarantee that everyone participating in the Walk will be touched in some way.”
Lace up your shoes and join in this approximately 2.75 mile walk for a great cause at The Bridges Country Club in Rancho Santa Fe with spectacular panoramic views of the golf course, bridges, lakes, creeks and hillsides beyond. This event is to raise money for Cancer Angels of San Diego, a nonprofit organization, which helps Stage IV cancer patients in San Diego County with basic needs. Each week, Cancer Angels receive several calls from individuals with late-stage cancer that are unable to pay their basic living expenses due to the high cost of their treatment and inability to work. Unfortunately, week after week, they turn down many requests because of the number of current cancer patients that they are already helping--and their funds are running low. Please be an angel here on earth and walk for those with Stage IV cancer and help restore dignity to their lives! Cost is $25/person Walk and $75/person Walk & Dinner. To register or to donate visit www. cancerangelsofsandiego.org or call (760) 942-6346.

Massage Envy Partners With Healing Hands and Arthritis Foundation Holiday Gift Cards Now Available Massage Envy’s 23 San Diego franchises wanted to do something unique and special this year. They put on a bowling event called “Street Fighters” and raised over $50,000 locally for the Arthritis Foundation. Dani Snyder, Marketing Director for Massage Envy, says, “We really wanted to make the event fun while at the same time build lasting relationships throughout the region. Our media partners and PR firm helped take the event to an even higher level.” Partnering with the Arthritis Foundation was a natural fit for Massage Envy, as they both share a common understanding about the seriousness of the disease and the power of massage therapy to relieve certain Arthritis symptoms. Arthritis strikes 50 million Americans (one in five) and that number is soaring. Half a million adults and children suffering from Arthritis live in San Diego. National Breast Cancer Foundation (NBCF) Services National Breast Cancer Foundation partners with medical facilities across the country to provide free mammograms and diagnostic breast care services to underserved women. We require that medical facilities within our network have the capacity to continue treatment after an abnormal finding or diagnosis of breast cancer. While NBCF provides free breast care services through its National Mammography Program (NMP), sometimes those in need are unaware that the program exists. Through patient navigation programs at medical facilities within our network, NBCF is able to promote the NMP to those that need it most. Patient navigation is a proactive approach to helping patients overcome the barriers of cost, fear, and misinformation surrounding the disease and its prevention. By helping underserved women to navigate the health care system, navigators provide the vision that gives women hope.

Radio Stations’ Amazing Pink Ribbon Challenge® October 1-31 The Pink Ribbon Challenge is a national fundraising campaign that lets radio listeners around the country “click to donate.” Hundreds of radio outlets across the country join the National Breast Cancer Foundation (NBCF) to promote the eighth annual Pink Ribbon Challenge (PRC), in conjunction with National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, October 1-31. The Pink Ribbon Challenge is unlike any other fundraising effort. Listeners participate by visiting their favorite radio station’s web site each day during October. When clicking on the Pink Ribbon Challenge banner that the station places on its home page, listeners are directed to the Breast Cancer web site where another click on the “Click Here to Give—it’s FREE!” button takes them to a page of small advertisements. The sponsors that place the advertisements will “Pay-PerClick” for each daily visit! There is a limit of one click per day per person. With every click, the sponsor donates money to the NBCF for hospitals, clinics, missions, and mobile mammography units coast-to-coast. 100% of the money goes directly to charity. There is no cost to the listener. Just by clicking on the advertiser’s banner, the listener is actually causing the advertiser to donate money.
In recent years, more than 100 music celebrities, such as Bon Jovi, Reba McEntire, Amy Grant, Martina McBride, Donny Osmond and many others, have recorded public service announcements urging listeners to take the Challenge. Their voices go out across the country through a nationwide radio campaign that has been supported by TM Studios as well as nationally syndicated shows such as Crook & Chase. Last year, hundreds of radio stations hosted the month-long campaign by adding links to their web sites and broadcasting the PSA’s. In addition, performers such as Ann and Nancy Wilson (Heart), Deana Carter, and Anne Cochran have featured the Pink Ribbon Challenge on their own web sites. Founded in 1991, the NBCF is a nonprofit foundation that provides funding for mammography and early detection programs nationwide. The Foundation also funds breast cancer research, though its main focus is on saving lives through early detection, especially among women with little or no access to health care. For more information, visit www.NBCF.com or call (913) 649-5905.

San Diego 16th Annual Susan G. Komen 3-Day Walk for the Cure November 16-18 Once again, it begins at the Opening Ceremony at the Del Mar Fairgrounds Friday morning at 6:30am. Three days and 60 miles later, it ends in Petco Park at 4:30pm Sunday afternoon. Gearing up for this annual and historical event, participants commit to raising at least $2,300 each and spend several months training to prepare for it. They devote their entire three day weekend to the cause. Each year, there are thousands of walkers in San Diego whose combined efforts raise tens of millions of dollars for the fight against breast cancer. Also, about $240,000 stays in San Diego County to help fund local programs. The Susan G. Komen 3-Day Walk for the Cure is a 60-mile walk for women and men who want to make a personal difference. Since its inception in 2003, the Komen 3-Day Walk for the Cure has raised well over $500 million. Proceeds help pay for global breast cancer research and local community programs supporting education, screening and treatment. It has helped pay for millions of breast screenings and has funded research, advocacy and community programs. Virtually every major advance in the fight against breast cancer in the last 30 years has been impacted by a Susan G. Komen grant. Participants walk 15-22 miles a day during the event. They are provided meals, snacks, drinks, shower facilities, tents, safety guidelines, and 24-hour medical support. A crew of volunteers spends the entire three days with the walkers and staff to make this event possible. There will be public cheering stations throughout the three days. Cheering station locations will be announced online two weeks prior to the event, so come out and show your support!
Thousands of women and men come together, each raising money for Susan G. Komen for the Cure. Then they take their commitment to end breast cancer one step further and walk 60 miles over the course of three days. Seventy-five percent of the net proceeds raised by the 3-Day fund national research and large public health outreach programs. The remaining 25 percent funds local community and affiliate outreach programs. Komen for the Cure is the world’s largest grassroots network of breast cancer survivors and activists fighting to save lives, empower people, ensure quality care for all and energize science to find the cures. The Del Mar Fairgrounds is located at 2260 Jimmy Durante Blvd. in Del Mar. For more information or to sponsor a walker visit www.komen.org or call 1-877 GO KOMEN.

Owner, hairstylist and wig specialist, Cathy Ketchum, is a little chagrinned about admitting how long she’s been working with wigs and styling hair. But experience really does matter in this business. Ketchum began working with wigs in East Lancing Michigan in 1975. She opened her first Headquarters Salon in San Marcos on Rancho Santa Fe Drive in 1985, and just recently opened a new, beautiful 2,700 square foot salon and wig store in San Marcos on North Twin Oaks Road near Hwy 78, across the street from the US Post Office. Located in the back of the salon is their very private consultation room for chemotherapy and hair loss patients. The Headquarters will find and fit you with the perfect wig. And because they are a full-service salon, they will custom cut your wig to perfectly fit you, and to make it even more natural, they will also color it to match your hair color or give it a perm. If you purchase a wig from them, they will cut it and customize it at no additional cost. Cathy says, “My whole heart is in the chemo side of the business. I just love my work so much. It’s not about the money.” The Headquarters Salon and Wig Store services include: men’s and women’s hair cuts, razor cuts, colors, perms,
weaves. They are a full retail men’s and women’s wig store and carry synthetic and human hairpieces by Jon Renau, Raquel Welch, and Eva Gabor. They offer free consulting and products by Murad such as their shampoo, conditioner and hair serum to promote hair growth. Walk-ins are welcome, but it is recommended to call ahead for an appointment. The Headquarters Salon and Wig Store is located at 405 N. Twin Oaks Valley Rd #114, San Marcos 92069. Taylors Non-Surgical Hair Replacement
Art Stomp: Boobs on the Move at Cedros Soles October 11, Thursday, 6-9pm A Boot Art auction to stop breast cancer is on Thursday, October 11, at Cedros Soles, located in the Design District of Solana Beach (on Cedros Ave. just north of the Belly Up Tavern). Benefitting The Brighter Sides’ non-profit – providing wigs, head coverings and other mastectomy products to uninsured and low-income women. The evening will bring live acoustic music, a raffle, complimentary food, beer/wine and a silent Boot Art auction; featuring the work of highly talented local and regional artists (auction closes at 8:30 pm). Each piece featured during the auction will incorporate or is inspired by the cowboy boot. Boobs on the Move has partnered with The Brighter Side’s non-profit; a local organization offering various mastectomy products, wigs and head covering to uninsured and low-income women. Why the boot? The cowboy boot has long been an inspiration and symbol of our grassroots, and represents strength, hard work and progress in our mission to prevent breast cancer. Cedros Soles is located at 143 South Cedros Avenue, Solana Beach. For more information, call (858) 356-2686 or visit boobsonthemove.org.
Taylors non-surgical hair replacement is for men and women. Their exclusive Elán, French style hair grafts are a revolutionary concept in hair grafts. Inspired by the finest Parisian hair restoration salons, the art of restoring hair non-surgically differs significantly from that in America. The capability to style hair according to the latest fashions is essential. To accomplish this, a higher degree of naturalness is paramount and requires a level of naturalness from the scalp to the hair. If you call now and mention the ad at the bottom of this page, you will receive $100 off the price of any
Elán hair graft. A private consultant will review pricing and answer any questions that you may have. Their studio, on Coast Hwy 101, is beautiful and very private. Taylors Hair Studio has two SoCal locations; one in Dana Point and the other, in Encinitas. Their Encinitas studio is located on Hwy 101 in Leucadia at 1636 N. Coast Hwy 101, Encinitas 92024. Please call (760) 681-7090 for an appointment or visit their website at www.taylorshairstudio.com. Please remember to mention the $100 discount offer below.

3rd Annual Del Mar Mud Run 5k Island-to-Island Waterman October 6, Sat, 8am-2pm Charity Paddleboard Relay Finishing a race has never been as downright dirty as it is in Del Mar. VAVi Sports & Social Club (San Diego’s premier coordinator of social events, charity opportunities, and adult sports league) presents the 3rd annual Del Mar Mud Run 5k, with 7,000 individuals participating with an additional few thousand spectators. The obstacle course resembles that of a boot camp with a short wall, belly crawl, cargo net climb, a hay bale obstacle, and, of course, plenty of slimy mud pits. The course is a challenge for all fitness levels, and most teams and individuals complete the course within 30 minutes to an hour. Registration options include individual competitor, four-person team and unlimited team sign-ups (for groups
of five or more), with each category ranging in price. Race times are at 8am and continue every hour until 2pm. Awards are given out in each time slot for best Mud Run times, in addition to a contest judging the best costumes worn for the race. During the times when participants and spectators are not watching, or competing in the run, they can enjoy the Mud Fest after party, which includes live music and DJs, a beer garden, and food vendors. The Mud Run is located at Del Mar Track and Fairgrounds at 2260 Jimmy Durante Blvd, Del Mar. For more info call (858) 273-3485 x10. Purchase tickets online at www.DelMarMudRun.com.

Santa Barbara Island to Catalina October 13, Saturday, 7am Start The Island-to-Island long-distance, open– ocean paddleboard race will take place on Saturday, October 13, 2012. This is only the third race of its kind in Southern California. Giles Douglas, 61, resident of Encinitas, California, produced the first transchannel island paddleboard race in 2004, and is doing so again this year, only much bigger this time. Douglas, a well respected waterman, used to compete in every major paddleboard race in California, Hawaii, and Australia until a boating accident in Malaysia in December 2009 almost took his life. After months of multiple surgeries and being in a foreign hospital, he returned to Encinitas. He is now battling cancer himself. Thankful to be alive, Douglas is putting on this event and is donating its proceeds to the City of Hope for cancer research, as he has done in past years. The Island-to-Island Waterman Relay will begin at Santa Barbara Island at 7am, October 13, and will end at the Isthmus,of Catalina Island. The event will include four separate classes in teams of three: Stand Up paddle 14’; Traditional lay down paddleboards; OC 1’s; and Surf Ski’s. The course travels due east and is approximately 28 nautical miles. At 3pm the gate opens to the event and at 3:30 one of California’s best Polynesian shows will begin. An awards ceremony with a catered dinner, dancing and cocktails will begin around 7:30 pm. The event will conclude promptly at 10:30 pm. There will be lodging, camping, and boating options available for all contestants and attendees. Anyone wishing to attend the event can ride over and return aboard the Catalina Express out of San Pedro at the close of the event. Call Catalina Express for daily departures. From Humble Beginnings to One of the Biggest Talents in America An Interview with San Diego’s American Idol Superstar Jessica Sanchez From every season of FOX TV’s number one reality singing show, a new American Idol emerges on top as America’s favorite singer. This season, it came down to the final episode, and out of 132 million votes, 16 year old (now 17), San Diego native, Jessica Sanchez, with perhaps the best voice ever heard on Idol, came in second to the laid-back Idol winner, Phillip Phillips. Jessica, a home-schooled high school student from Chula Vista whose father is currently deployed in Singapore, has worked hard to achieve her goal - to help out her family through her voice. At 11 years old, she came close, as a contender for the wild card during the first season of America’s Got Talent; but she didn’t give up. That persistence worked well for her, and now her name is known all across the U.S. I recently had the pleasure of interviewing Jessica and found her to be soft-spoken, polite and very humble. This is how our conversation went. Serena: When you were on American Idol, did you get to hang out with the judges and get to know them? Jessica: Not at all. The only interaction was what you guys saw on TV. There wasn’t any backstage stuff where they had their favorites or anything like talking to them or chilling with them. It was all just professional, pretty much. Serena: So when you were on stage getting critiqued, which judge did you feel like you connected with the most? Jessica: I think I connected with all of them. I Phillip Phillips and Jessica Sanchez— mean I loved it when they gave Photo by FOX TV
me the best criticism they could have given. I can’t really pick a favorite. Serena: Did you ever feel like the judges were unhelpful at all? Jessica: No, not at all. I think they told me how they felt from a viewer’s point and from a professional point, too. I mean, they knew what they were talking about. Serena: Every week you had to memorize a bunch of songs. Were you ever panicked about memorizing all those songs or did you know most of them? Jessica: Some of them I had never heard. It was difficult because we would have to learn them in a couple of days. It was definitely challenging but we all got through it. Serena: So, how did you go about memorizing them? Did you just listen to the songs over and over? Jessica: I’ve always been really good at memorizing stuff. I would do YouTube covers, so memorizing a song was like a piece of cake to me. But with all that stress and with everything else going on – you know, we were doing photo shoots and everything while trying to memorize a song. It was difficult; but, hey, I memorized them! (laughs) Serena: Up to this point, you’ve just been doing covers. Now you’ll be making your own albums. How do you feel about having actual writers write songs that will be tailored just for you? Jessica: It’s an amazing feeling. As a little kid, I always wanted to be on American Idol and experience that. But I’ve always wanted to make an album with my own songs and show everybody who I really am. Now I have a chance to do that, so I’m really proud and excited about everything that’s going my way. Serena: Are you participating in the song writing for your new album? Jessica: At this moment, no. All the songs that they’re showing me right now are amazing to me. I don’t think that they really need many changes. But if I feel like there needs to be maybe something changed then I’ll definitely bring it up. Serena: Before you were on American Idol you were on America’s Got Talent. I heard that after you went on America’s Got Talent a lot of kids at school suddenly want-
ed to be your friend just because you had been on such a popular TV show. How did you deal with that? Jessica: During middle school it got kind of like that, but people weren’t very blunt about it. You could tell a little bit, I guess. It wasn’t that I was a singer but people knew me for that and it made me a little uncomfortable because I was known as Jessica Sanchez the Singer instead of just Jessica. It was weird. I’m the type of person who’s really picky when it comes to making friends. I love people who are down-to-earth and like to keep themselves private. Not like, “Oh yeah, Jessica’s my friend” and all that. I don’t really have many close friends; but there’s a reason for it. Serena: Were you popular in school? Jessica: My name was popular, I guess you could say. People knew who I was and would come up to me and say “hey”—people I had never even talked to before —but they weren’t like friends. People knew who I was, but we didn’t really hold conversations. Serena: How are you handling being famous now? Jessica: Literally, I don’t really feel famous. (laughs) I just feel like even though we’re out of the Idol bubble we’re still in this world where we’re not really seeing what other people are listening to. Like, I don’t even know what’s playing on the radio right now or what’s going on. (laughs) Deandre and I took a taxi one time and there was one of those little TVs in the taxi and on a commercial we saw Phillip and we were freaking out. I mean it’s just weird to us. We’re not used to it at all. Serena: Do you ever go on the internet and see netizens criticizing you? Do you look on the internet at all? Photo provided by FOX TV

JESSICA SANCHEZ Continued from page B-7 Jessica: I don’t ever look myself up but I go on my Twitter to talk to my fans and to respond to them. Some people like to express themselves and they try to tell you how they feel about you. Sometimes I get some really expressive Twitter messages but nothing has really brought me down at all. I’ve always sort of gotten that kind of stuff. I’m not perfect. There’s always going to be somebody that doesn’t like me. We just gotta live with it and get used to it. Can’t please everybody. Serena: I noticed you have good fashion sense. Do you like being dressed up or do you prefer to be more casual? Jessica: It depends. If I’m dressed down I need to have one thing that makes it look good. If I’m wearing sweatpants and a tank top I need to have jewelry that looks good with it. I’m weird. (laughs) I’m really into fashion, though. Serena: How much makeup do you wear when you’re not on TV? Jessica: Not a lot at all. I wear just foundation and eyeliner and that’s pretty much it. Serena: No lipstick or anything? Jessica: I wear a little bit but not like a full-on blast of color. I don’t like all that stuff and I was never into makeup before; but I have to look somewhat prepped up. (laughs) Serena: What kind of earrings do you like to wear? Jessica: It depends. I like a lot of tribal stuff. I don’t like all that fancy stuff but I love the big tribal earrings. Serena: What advice can you give singers aspiring to make it through American Idol? Jessica: Just don’t let anybody bring you down. Don’t let anybody change you. I mean, because if it’s something that you want to do your whole life, then go for it. When I was like ten years old or even five years old, I wanted to be on American Idol, and so I tried out the first year I was eligible, and I made it to the top two! (laughs) It was pretty crazy.

La Costa Valley Preschool and Kindergarten— an Institution of Excellence for 22 Years La Costa Valley Preschool has been educating and nurturing North County children in La Costa since 1991. In 1999, due to their outstanding track record and fine reputation, they were selected out of many applicants, to be part of the preschool and kindergarten for the Villages of La Costa development that consists of more than 5,000 single-family homes in La Costa Valley, La Costa Oaks, La Costa Greens and La Costa Ridge. The school is located in the heart of La Costa Valley between two award-winning elementary schools and next to a protected natural habitat for native plants and birds. Although located in La Costa Valley, the school’s enrollment is not limited to La Costa Valley residents, but serves all of North County. Through the stewardship of its founder and director, Cindy Cesena, La Costa Valley Preschool and Kindergarten has become a leader in early childhood education and development, inspiring creativity, expression and health in young children, as it is a learning institution that understands that children learn best through hands-on experiences, helping make our community and planet a greener and healthier place to live and grow. Take a visit to their campus, and you will find a flowering and thriving gar-
den and play area unlike any other preschool around. Last month the school put on a very successful community-wide free electronic waste collection event. A local La Costa resident, Cindy Cesena has dedicated the past 36 years of her life to the field of education. She has taught high school and college courses in early education and trained and administered university, federal, and state educational programs. She has been a member of the San Diego Association For The Education of Young Children (SDAEYC) since 1976 and this year has become the president-elect of the San Diego and Imperial Valley County’s chapter of SDAEYC. All that said, if you ask her what her dream was, and still is, her answer is, “My goal was to one day open a school in my own childhood community. I look at early childhood learning as a whole child educational experience. From inspiring creativity, expression and health to helping students develop an interest and excitement in building their educational foundation for ongoing school success.” Take a tour of La Costa Valley Preschool and Kindergarten at 2276 Calle Barcelona, Carlsbad 92009. Off to a Great Start New Pacific Preschool and Kindergarten Now Open in San Elijo Hills Lynda Way understands the value of a child’s Early Childhood Education in implementing her very successful Pacific Preschool and Kindergarten curriculum. Pacific Preschool provides an early education program that meets the needs of and promotes the physical, socio-emotional and intellectual development of children. It all starts with a person who spent many years teaching kindergarten, first and second grades. Lynda Way, with her Masters Degree in Early Childhood Education, understood the need to get children more prepared for elementary school and beyond, and developed a specific educational program that focuses on “school readiness.” Just as important, she understands the need for genuine communication between parents, staff and administration. Now, after 40 years of working with children and teachers, Lynda’s program is a huge success. Each Classroom Teacher on staff is experienced and has a four-year Bachelor’s Degree or a California Department of Education Teaching Permit while working on her Bachelor’s Degree. Each Teacher makes a special contribution to the program in addition to her knowledge of child development and teaching strategies. Pacific Preschool and Kindergarten is no ordinary school. It is accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC), which is a distinction earned by only 8 percent of preschools in the nation. The new year-round preschool and kindergarten offers programs for children 18 months old through Kindergarten. The school, located in San Elijo Hills, is Pacific Preschool’s third school; the others are located in Ladera Ranch and Laguna Niguel in South Orange County. Pacific Preschool and Kindergarten in San Elijo Hills is off to a great start with the early enrollment far exceeding all of their expectations. They are already signing children up on a waiting list for upcoming years. There are still openings for this year, so please contact the school’s Administration Office as soon as possible, by calling (760) 510-0155, visiting www.pacificpreschool.com or stopping by the school office at 1301 Elfin Forest Road West, San Elijo Hills (San Marcos) CA 92078.
