Their deli kitchens specialize in all natural, made-from-scratch, restaurant

quality foods and a sandwich deli featuring Boar’s Head Brand deli meats and cheeses and a wide selection of homemade salads. They offer sandwiches, salads and bakery items daily. They have online ordering through their website deli page using GrubHub, and deliver to your home or office. The produce department features a variety of organic and local produce, as well as imported produce from South America. The wine department is second to none and each store has a team of experienced wine connoisseurs. They offer full service catering. Original Pancake House With expanded outside seating, OPH has been a locals choice for the ultimate breakfast in San Diego ever since they opened their first franchise in San Diego in 1979. The Original Pancake House is a third generation restaurant that originated in Portland, Oregon. Their signature breakfast dishes include The Dutch Baby, Mushroom Omelet with mushroom sherry sauce, and their Apple Pancakes. Their world famous original recipes are inspired from all over the world, and incorporate the very finest ingredients, such as USDA AA grade butter, pure 36% whipping cream, fresh grade AA eggs, hard wheat unbleached flour, and their own homemade sourdough starter recipe. Their batters and sauces are made fresh daily in each

restaurant’s kitchen; and their coffee is their own special blend. Try the Original Pancake House’s special thick sliced bacon and their amazing omelets. We highly recommend their gourmet cherry Kijafa crepes. If you’ve never tried The Original Pancake House, you’re long overdue; and if you’re already a regular, then you know what we’re talking about. Experience the flavor, the atmosphere, the attention to quality and service, and the ultimate breakfast favorite for San Diegans for over 36 years. Firenze Trattoria Firenze is open with an expanded outdoor patio. They are winners of the Diners Choice Award from Open Table and have won numerous awards over the years, including Wine Spectator Award of Excellence, and Best Italian by Ranch and Coast. Their longevity speaks volumes about their cuisine and service. As owner/restaurateur, Barry Podwell, explains, “We don’t have the luxury of having spectacular ocean views like so many restaurants along the coast, so our food has to be very good to keep us here all these years.” It’s true. Firenze Trattoria may not have the ocean, but it certainly does have spectacular food. Firenze Trattoria’s authentic Italian cuisine evokes the romance and flavors of Italy’s Tuscany coast. The menu includes an extensive lineup of local favorites, too many to list; but we especially recommend their signature Lasagne Firenze. Every Italian restaurant boasts about their lasagna, but this one is truly special. It’s hard to see

the layers of ricotta cheese, a mixture of beef, chicken, and sausage, fresh Roma tomato, mushroom, and parmesan atop marinara sauce, because it’s completely covered with a very light and creamy béchamel sauce. It’s absolutely delicious. Other recommended dishes include: Calamari Fritti Antipasti, with lightly battered, deep fried calamari served with piquant marinara sauce; Risotto Portofino, grilled jumbo shrimp served with artichoke hearts and asparagus, surrounding a center mound of risotto. From Filet Mignon al Casino to Butternut Squash Ravioli, you just can’t miss. Happy Hour is 4-6:30pm Mon-Sun with a popular discounted bar menu for food, wine, cocktails, and beer. Mondays offer 1/2 off bottles of wine. Firenze Trattoria is located at 162 South Rancho Santa Fe Rd, Encinitas 92024. Call (760) 944-9000 or visit www.firenzetrattoria.com.

Meritage Wine Market and Tasting Room Meritage is actively involved with multiple charity organizations and events, including Make-A-Wish San Diego and their annual Wine & Wishes Tasting Event. They have won multiple awards over the past sixteen years, including “Best Wine Shop in San Diego.” They opened in 2002 and have evolved into a multi-level wine experience. Whether you are looking to give that perfect holiday gift, or need a great bottle of wine for dinner, Meritage is known for its exemplary customer service and personal touch. The staff at Meritage Wine Market is ready to help you find the perfect bottle of wine or Champagne this holiday season. Meritage

invites you to stop in and enjoy wine tasting while relaxing on their beautiful outdoor patio. Weekly tastings are themed and held every Friday night from 6 to 8 PM and include 6 different wines from all over the world for you to enjoy. Meritage presents intimate wine seminars and dinners in their private Cellar Room several times a month, in addition to hosting a wine school. Ask about their Wine of the Month Club. Meritage is located in the Rancho Santa Fe Plaza at 162 S. Rancho Santa Fe Road, Encinitas 92024. Call (760) 479-2500 or visit their website at www. meritagewinemarket.com.

Hacienda de Vega You can’t miss Hacienda de Vegas beautiful outdoor patio in Rancho Santa Fe Plaza. Located in the main plaza, next to the clock tower and water fountain, a beautifully landscaped, heated, and expansive outdoor patio with terracotta tile rooflines, colorful umbrellas, and 33-year old Jacaranda trees welcomes you! Inside is a beautifully lit tree in the center of the restaurant. The Vega family warmly welcomes you to their home in Encinitas after being a landmark in Escondido for over 15 years. Bold and distinctive flavors of old-world Mexico, with new signature twists of delicious spices, are the hallmark of Patricia Vega’s amazing family recipes. One authentic signature specialty after another will awaken your taste buds with the flavors of her many fresh, daily made salsas and sauces. To nourish your body and

satisfy your soul, try any of their “old favorites” such as Enchiladas de Mole, which comes with two soft corn tortillas, shredded chicken breast, mole sauce, cream, cheese and onions. It’s served with rice and beans. If you like shrimp, try their Tequila Shrimp, jumbo shrimp sautéed in spicy tequila sauce, tomatoes, onions, Serrano chiles, and garlic over a bed of white rice. From delicious appetizers like Mole Fries, to crispy fresh garden salads, thick old-style Mexican soups, grilled fish, steak, chicken, and wonderful desserts, you simply can’t go wrong. Stop in Mon- Fri from 3pm for Happy Hour food and drink specials. Ask about take-out and delivery options and if they are having live music. Hacienda de Vega is located in the Rancho Santa Fe Plaza at 162 S. Rancho Santa Fe Road, Encinitas 92014. Visit www.haciendadevega.com.

Champagne French Bakery Café With lovely table settings on the main plaza of Rancho Santa Fe Plaza, Champagne has been serving a fusion of modern and traditional French cuisine since 1987. They offer an assortment of coffees, teas, breads, pastries, cakes, tarts, cookies, sandwiches, salads and soups. They are famous for their pastries, including a variety of croissants, custard brioche, cinnamon roll, raisin scone (one of our favorites), and cranberry muffin. Desserts include such delights as: Napoleon, which is a crispy puffed pastry layered with vanilla cream and topped with fondant and chocolate; crème brulee; vanilla éclair; bread pudding; and chocolate dipped strawberries. They also serve

cakes, tarts, and cookies. One of our favorites is their raspberry cookie, which is two soft cookies sandwiched with raspberry preserves and half is dipped in dark chocolate. Try Champagne French Bakery Café for lunch under an umbrella in front of the Rancho Santa Fe Plaza clock tower and fountain. Sandwiches include a wonderful assortment of French Dip, Turkey Florentine Panini, and Chicken Pesto. They also serve delicious salads and soups. Champagne Bakery is in the Rancho Santa Fe Plaza next to Harvest Ranch Market at 162 S. Rancho Santa Fe Road, Encinitas 92024. Call (760) 944-9446 or visit www.champagnebakery.com.

Tony’s Jacal is one of the most famous and historic Mexican restaurants and cantinas in San Diego. Located in Solana Beach, Tony’s Jacal is a historic San Diego landmark which opened its doors in 1946 as a small neighborhood house where neighbors would stop by for a delicious meal. If you’re one of the lucky ones who grew up anywhere in San Diego North County, you know how great Tony’s is and probably are a frequent guest. According to Zagat, “Tony’s Jacal is one of the most authentic north of the border Mexican restaurants.” Taste the flavors of old Mexico and enjoy the history of one of the first Mexican restaurants in San Diego. Tony’s Jacal (pronounced hakal) is one of San Diego’s oldest and most treasured Mexican restaurants. Guests enjoy homemade comfort breakfasts and lunches, inside or outside on their expanded beautiful patio, while people-watching and taking in the sunshine and fresh ocean air. Three to four times a year, retired Marine officers who flew

A-4 Skyhawks, during the Vietnam war (and after), gather to meet at their favorite breakfast place in Carlsbad. Artist Irina Negulescu Showcases Her Stunning Works of Art at The IN Gallery Gallery Events Second Saturday of each Month By Hayley Ulle Irina Negulescu’s mother was a selftaught artist, but she never put a paint brush in her daughter’s hand. Although she didn’t believe that she had inherited artistic talent, Irina spent her early years observing her mother and building her skills behind the scenes, without formal training. After graduating with honors from Scoala Populara de Arta in Romania, the award-winning artist came to the United States in 1989 and pursued further studies at Mesa College and San Diego State University. Since then, she has produced an extensive portfolio of work locally and internationally. She has appeared on HGTV’s “Masters of Modern Art,” and has become the owner/creator of The IN Gallery, in the Barrio Logan District of San Diego. Negulescu’s early work was oil on canvas; and although she paints with acrylic now, she said she still considers herself to be an oil painter. To achieve her unique style, she combines her pigments with marble dust collected from sculptors and paints on very large canvases. Much of Negulescu’s work features interpretations of women underwater, as well as sunsets, ocean waves, and landscapes that are painted in bold, rich colors and a style that echoes some elements of impressionism. She attributes her subject matter to her childhood spent on the Black Sea in Romania. She was always fascinated by the blue water while growing up, and with sisters and nieces around her, the female form was always available to her

as a model. She said that an instructor once told her, “If you can paint the female figure, you can paint anything.” Negulescu said that children are her favorite subject to paint, but depictions of nature and the female form appeal to a wider audience. In 2011, Negulescu was diagnosed with breast cancer, and a gallery that had recently bought her work went bankrupt. She wanted to open her own gallery; so while she was receiving chemotherapy, she showed her work at a small space in Little Italy. She invited a guest artist to attract different crowds each month, and spent the next six years showing her work there. Three years ago, Negulescu moved her work into a 2,000-square-foot warehouse in Barrio Logan, the current location for The IN Gallery. She began to participate in the monthly Barrio Art Crawl, which features self-guided tours of businesses, studios, and galleries in the area. “Without the intention, I became a gallery,” she said. Ever since, she has worked to expand the gallery and its offerings each month. The gallery has featured artists from all over California, including many from North County. This year, Negulescu has been forced to make adaptations to keep The IN Gallery open during the COVID-19 pandemic. Her website features a three-dimensional virtual exhibition of her work. She has said she would like to stay open as much as she can to help other artists. She hosts events that utilize more outdoor space, requires masks to be worn in the gallery, and ensures that visitors maintain social distancing guidelines. Negulescu typically displays her own work in the back portion of the gallery. However, when the pandemic hit, she moved the work of featured artists farther back and began renting out the front of the gallery to keep it afloat. Nevertheless, she considers herself to be very lucky in this strange season. Many of her renters have been emerging artists who are interested in participating in events at the gallery. As an artist, facing career challenges is nothing new, she added. “Ever

Irina Negulescu

since art has been created, we’ve struggled,” she said. “We have to be our best advocates.” The IN Gallery is open by appointment, with events held on the second Saturday of each month. Recently, Negulescu hosted a themed Steampunk event and a themed Comics & Cosplay show at her gallery, complete with outdoor live music and a food truck. Upcoming events for October and November can be found on The IN Gallery’s Facebook page at www.facebook.com/theingallery. The IN Gallery is located at 1878 Main Street, Suite D, San Diego. Diana Drake’s Lady Josette Couture Brings Period-Inspired Glamour to High Fashion Scene By Hayley Ulle Diana Drake, owner and fashion designer for Lady Josette Couture, has an approach to design that has allowed her to reach a global audience with a clientele past her wildest dreams. Growing up in San Diego, Diana recalls that it was difficult to find clothing that matched her style in stores, so she began designing her own line of garments primarily out of necessity. “There’s not much of a market for the stuff I like,” she said. “It tends to be more street fashion.” Diana, who is an interior designer by trade, said that going from interior to fashion design was an easy transition for her. Originally, she intended to launch a small online shop to market her designs; but 17 years later, she is still creating garments. Her company, formerly known as Enigma Fashions, was recently re-branded as Lady Josette Couture. During her career as a fashion designer, Drake has designed many avant-garde couture looks, including wedding gowns. She said that her bewitching and delectable design style extends well beyond the stereotypes associated with Goth and costuming, and describes her style as elegant, refined, and period-inspired. “I like to accentuate women’s bodies for them to feel sexy and look sexy,” she said, and added that her work rarely features plunging

necklines or exposed cleavage, as she prefers more modest designs that leave certain elements to the imagination. “There’s not a single thing I wouldn’t wear myself.” Diana’s creative process begins with finding inspiration which comes from a variety of sources, such as an attractive fabric or a fashion design that captures her attention. She especially loves period pieces with attributes of medieval, Victorian, or Renaissance style. She added that she often feels as if she were born in the wrong era. However, once she has found a source of inspiration, she formulates ideas and sketches them onto paper. Patterns must be created so that the design can be translated into a sewn garment. Ironically, Diana said she dislikes sewing. When she was running Engima Fashions, she had a pattern maker and a seamstress to assist her. Since re-branding her business, she has been handling most aspects of Lady Josette Couture herself, from designing to pattern making, sewing, styling and directing photo shoots. We are so honored to feature Diana in our Oct/Nov edition of the North County Sun. Earlier this year, her designs were featured in two fashion publications. In April, “Féroce Magazine” debuted some of her Rococo-inspired designs, including a crimson strapless gown, a blue-grey strapless gown with a gathered and richly embellished skirt, and a blush-colored off-the-shoulder gown with tiered ruffles on the skirt. “Horizon Magazine” showcased her work in May, with an editorial on her designs inspired by the 1920s. The spread featured a floor-length pale pink sleeveless gown accessorized with pearls and a coordinating wrap, sleek black halter and spaghetti strap dresses, and a knee-length burgundy sleeveless dress styled with a delicate silver statement necklace. Lady Josette Couture garments can be purchased online or an appointment can be made directly with Diana Drake. In addition to fashion design, Diana also produces jewelry, accessories, and the Lady Josette Manor Home Décor

Collection, which includes pottery, figurines inspired by Day of the Dead, and other decorative items. For more information, visit www.ladyjosettecouture.com or contact her directly at diana@ladyjosettecouture.com.

Safe and Fun Outdoor Public Art Viewing – Drive, Ride, or Walk-up to View Cities throughout North County proudly display their art sculptures and murals. It takes a City Council and often an Art Committee to vote on and approve a permanent or temporary public art display. Some cities are more artsy than others, and one can usually tell quite a bit about a town by its displayed artwork. Some city works of art such as “Magic Carpet Ride” aka “Cardiff Kook” by Matthew Antichevich, in Cardiff by the Sea, and Surfing Madonna mosaic by Mark Patterson, in Encinitas are quite famous and some might say, infamous. Many of us take it for granted, for example, when we see a mural painted on the side of a building along Coast Highway 101, in Leucadia. But some of us make it a point to venture out and view the beautiful and thought-provoking art. Feeling cooped up by staying home during the pandemic? This might be a good time to safely venture out, either by car, bike, or on foot, and stop and view the art!

CITY OF VISTA PUBLIC ART The City of Vista’s public art program provides a fun, detailed, interactive map of all their art installations online at www.vistapublicart. com. The city currently has three outdoor programs to view: Kites Over Vista, Vista in Bloom, Paseo Santa Fe Artwork. Venture out and view its diverse array of sculptures and murals that are scattered across landmark sites, such as Civic Center Park, Alta Vista Botanical Gardens, and Vista Library. Kites Over Vista Rick Randall and   sculptures are creJaydon Sterling Randall ated by local artists and installed downtown each May. Each piece is mounted on a tall pole, providing good visibility for sightseers. Several of this year’s featured sculptures are located at Broadway and South Indiana Avenue, including “Aeolian Butterfly” by David Terrell and Dave Weaver on the southeast corner; “Beacon” by Kellan Shanahan on the southwest corner; and “Sea Life” by Noe Estrada on the northeast corner. Additional sculptures are “Dark Ship” by Norberto Estrada at Southeast Main Street and North Citrus Avenue; and “Midnight Nectar” by Alex Gall at Vista Village Drive and Main Street. Vista in Bloom beautifies the city’s necessities, with art on utility boxes painted by the public. A bold pink and blue design painted by Anthony Saucedo appears to cover the box at West Vista Way and Grapevine Drive with furry arms. The box at Palm Drive and Main Street has been reimagined as a beehive by Sierra Brandt. Many of the boxes feature nature themes, but each one is completely unique. For the Paseo Santa Fe Artwork program, glass panels of art have been installed in information kiosks along South Santa Fe between Vista Village Drive and Civic Center Drive. Three sculptures will mark the city’s new roundabouts, and one of them has already been installed. “Portal,” a brilliant blue metal sculpture by Alex Gall, was recently selected for the roundabout at South Santa Fe and Pala Vista Drive. Vista Village Creek Walk is the permanent home for “Horses,” a metal sculpture by Ricardo Breceda, that

beautifully captures the energy of a horse in mid-gallop. Alta Vista Botanical Gardens maintains a large collection of art as well, such as Fritzie Urquart’s stainless steel sculpture called “The Constellation Tree” and Melissa Ralston’s abstract sculpture “Tail Spin.” Colorful murals decorate the sides of buildings, from the playful style of Sarah Spinks’ “Lilac Cat on the Hunt” at 139 Main Street to the slice of history honored in Doug Davis’ “Vista Fire Department 1929” at Curbside Café. Artists Rick Randall and Jaydon Sterling Randall of Randall Art Ranch currently have fifteen pieces of art on display throughout Vista. Jaydon and Randall heard about the Kites Over Vista program from a neighbor, and created “Winds of Change” in 2011. “Winds of Change” can still be seen across the street from Rancho Buena Vista High School. The Randalls have participated in the program multiple times, creating “Adventure” at Vista Public Library, “Flight of the Butterflies” at Shadowridge Park, “Mardi Gras” at Vista Sports Park, and “Carnival” in front of Croziers Flowers. The Randalls primarily use steel, Corten steel, and aluminum to create their sculptures. The aluminum ones are painted with the same high-quality automotive paint that is used for hot rods. Their “Steampunk” series, on display throughout Vista, is made from steel and recycled materials. The whimsical metal works include “Alley Art Man” and “Love Locks” at the corner of South Indiana

Avenue and Main Street; “Alley Art Woman” at Michigan Avenue and Main Street; “Alley Cat” at 203 Main Street; and “Time Machine,” which sits on the northwest corner of Broadway and South Indiana Avenue. Jaydon said it would be very difficult to choose a favorite sculpture, but “Alley Art Man” and “Love Locks” are both especially sentimental pieces to her and her husband because she enjoys seeing how the public interacts with them. She said that their first steampunk piece, “Alley Art Man,” represents the beginnings of the “Vista Alley Art Festival” that the Randalls helped create, and has become a popular landmark for selfies and photo opportunities. Many marriage proposals have taken place in front of “Love Locks,” and anyone in the community is welcome to lock away their love by adding a lock to the sculpture. In addition to their Vista public art, the Randalls’ work has appeared in Manhattan Beach, Bellflower, Palm Desert, Fallbrook, Oceanside, and Encinitas. They have also created gates and private commissions for various locations around the county. Their own property, Randall Art Ranch, is another place to see their work. Jaydon said that visitors frequently come to their gate to look at their art. Randall Art Ranch is located at 636 Vale View Drive, Vista. 16 • October – November ’20 • www.NorthCountySun.com Find more entertainment at www.NorthCountySun.com OUTDOOR PUBLIC ART  Continued from page 15 CITY OF ENCINITAS PUBLIC ART The City of Encinitas offers a flourishing public art scene and a vibrant escape from the familiarity of quarantine. The sides of many buildings along Coast Hwy 101 have wonderfully painted murals. The city’s most recent project is a permanent installation of 53 mosaic panels at the Santa Fe Drive undercrossing below I-5. It was completed in July. The panels were installed to encourage the use of new pedestrian and bicycle paths created through the Caltrans and SANDAG Build NCC project. They were designed by local high school and college students and adult artists. The series conveys the theme “Encinitas Up Close,” with colorful and sometimes abstract depictions of the people, nature, and culture that represent Encinitas. Each panel is distinctly unique, offering a different perspective on the coastal city’s

many attributes. There are a number of individual artworks to admire in Encinitas. Located in front of the Marine Safety Center at Moonlight Beach, “Moonlight Beach Tribute Bench” is a mosaic collaboration between Betsy K. Schulz and Stephen Dalton Architects. The colors of the mosaic reflect that of a sunset at the beach, and the pieces are set into an organic form of concrete which functions as a bench. At this location, visitors can also find “The Pacific Playground,” a stunning glass mosaic by Peggy Sue Zepeda, Don Myers, Manny Corona, and community members. The artwork depicts marine life and expresses appreciation for nature with the phrase, “Save The Ocean” across the top. Swami’s Roadside Park offers a nod to the coastal vibes of Encinitas as well with “Easter Island Head II,” a composition reminiscent of tiki culture that has been

wonderfully carved into a tree, by Tim Richards. For more public art displays, visit www.encinitasca.gov/publicart. Photos courtesy of Jim Gilliam.

by Roger Stoller called “Coastal Helix.” Made of steel, the sculpture features artisan boulders at the base and intricate, curving lace patterns that have been cut with a water jet. A number of sculptures can be found around Carlsbad’s Cultural Arts Office, including the colorful, stylized painted metal of “Marmalade Dragonflies” by Benbow Bullock, the welded metal cowboy silhouettes of Paul Hobson’s “Caballeros Gates,” and the green metal of Italo Scanga’s “Tree for Elijah” and “Untitled.” The Cultural Arts Office operates the Carlsbad Sculpture Garden at 2955 Elmwood St. as well. It is open from 9am to 4pm Monday through Thursday and features work from local, national, and international artists. Exhibitions rotate every six to twelve months. Carlsbad City Library complex is home to several works of art as well. On the exterior, Jan Sanchez’s “Flying Shadows” echoes the triangular structure of a paper airplane made from copper and finished with a green patina. The Learning Center showcases “Father and Child,” a small bronze sculpture by Patrick J. McGowan that was donated in memory of John A. Casler. The Children’s Library features a series of six free-standing metal sculptures and six colorful mixed media designs by Deloss McGraw. Additional works of art

can be found at the Georgina Cole Library, local fire stations, administrative offices, and parks, such as Pine Avenue Park, Aviara Community Park, and Carlsbad Skatepark.

CITY OF CARLSBAD PUBLIC ART The City of Carlsbad shows an appreciation for cultural public outdoor art displays with an interactive map of its art online at www.carlsbadca.gov/services/depts/arts/ public.asp. The Art in Public Places program was established in 1985 as the first public art program in San Diego County. The first installation was Lloyd Hamrol’s “Crown Lair” at Stagecoach Community Park in 1989. The program has grown to include more than 100 works of art throughout the city. At the roundabout intersection of Highway 1, State Street, and Carlsbad Boulevard, there is an installation

Día de Los Muertos Events Día de Los Muertos is a three-day celebration from Mexican culture that commemorates deceased loved ones with prayers and remembrances. It is also known as Day of the Dead, or All Hallows’ Eve, All Saints’ Day, and All Souls’ Day. The holiday takes place from October 31 to November 2 each year. It is believed that the dead are able to cross the barrier of the spirit world and reunite with living loved ones during this time. Those who celebrate, visit cemeteries and construct ofrendas, or altars, that are often decorated with marigolds, toys, pan de muerto (bread of dead), calaveras (sugar skulls), and photos of the deceased to awaken their soul and attract them to the offerings. Since it originally began in Mexico nearly 3,000 years ago, the holiday has been observed more frequently in the United States, too. There are a number of annual events

that take place in San Diego County. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, most events have moved to a virtual format this year. Events are subject to change. October 17 – The community of City Heights has organized a walking tour of ofrendas that have been decorated for deceased loved ones and placed outside of homes and businesses in the area. October 26-November 2 – There is a virtual Los Muertos 5K/10K that allows participants to walk or run wherever they are between October 26 and November 2. Runners and walkers can upload their results online and interact with other participants through social media and the event mobile app. Visit www.losmuertos5k.com. November 1 – At 1pm on November 1, Encinitas Friends of the Arts will stream their annual Día de Muertos event virtually. Festivities include performances from mariachi bands and Ballet Folklorico dancers, art-making workshops, face painting and Caterina costume contests, and free giveaways. It can be accessed for free at encinitasart.org. November 1 – Easy Wind (Grateful Dead tribute band)

will perform “Night of the Dead” livestream at www.BellyUp. com at 5pm. Looking for a New Career? CSUSM Offers Teaching English as a Second/Foreign Language Certificate In December 2015, Scott Havenor was laid off from a 26-year career in the software business. Looking to start a new chapter, he learned about the Teaching English as a Second Language/Foreign Language (TESL/TEFL) certificate at CSUSM. Havenor completed the program in May 2017 and immediately saw the value of his new certificate. He connected with a school in Ukraine that teaches American English to local corporations so they can integrate into the globalized economy. The job application required a TESL/TEFL certificate and the interview included preparing a sample lesson, so Havenor selected a lesson he had created as part of the certificate program. He received a swift offer and six weeks after earning his TESL/ AMERICAN LANGUAGE & CULTURE INSTITUTE N O R T H

TEFL certificate, Havenor was heading to Dnipro, Ukraine, for a four-month teaching assignment. “I was thinking I was really retired,” he says. “This program has validated my professional life since being laid off and has given me a sense of contentment that I was missing. It was the bridge that has enabled this new life I am now going to have.” Designed for those with minimal or no English language teaching experience who are interested in teaching English abroad (EFL) or in the U.S. (ESL), this 120-hour certificate focuses on best practices in methods, materials and techniques used to teach English as a second/foreign language. The program provides professional development and employment guidance with a strong emphasis on hands-on training and practice with English-language learners in a university setting. Sessions are taught by master teachers

with extensive experience in TESL/TEFL, teacher training, and curriculum development. Participants receive ample opportunities for developing effective lesson plans and syllabi, practicing classroom management strategies, peer-teaching, and classroom facilitation. The 15-week spring course is offered Tuesday and Thursday evenings for 8 hours per week, and the 6-week summer intensive course runs Monday through Friday on the CSUSM campus for a total of 20 hours per week. Peter Sprague’s Musical Collab “Live(ish) From SpragueLand” Virtual Live Concerts Oct. 22, Nov. 5, Nov. 19 By Hayley Ulle Local surfer and master of chill, Peter Sprague is an award-winning jazz musician and Encinitas resident who has collaborated with numerous artists, including Chick Corea, Leonard Patton, and Charles McPherson, over the span of his career. He is a two-time recipient of Chamber Music America’s New Works Jazz Grant and he received a Lifetime Achievement Award from San Diego Music Awards in 2015, among other accolades. Influenced by his father and his brother Tripp’s love of music, Peter Sprague began playing guitar at age 10. He became interested in jazz as a junior high school student, studied briefly at Interlochen Arts Academy in Michigan, and went on to turn his passion into an accomplished career of 54 years and counting. Peter says he loves jazz because of its heavy reliance on improvisation, making him feel like a “composer of the moment.” However, when the COVID-19 pandemic hit, “For all of us musicians, everything came to a screeching halt,” Peter said. It greatly impacted even the most accomplished veterans of

the music industry. But after some serious contemplation, Peter went to work creating a long-time dream to innovatively combine audio and video at his Encinitas recording studio, which he calls SpragueLand. As it turns out, the transition to a virtual lifestyle was just the push he needed to bring his dream to fruition. In June, Peter began sharing episodes of “Live(ish) From SpragueLand,” which are live-streamed concerts featuring collaborations with local, national, and international musicians. In several episodes, Peter performs with a band comprised of his brother on saxophone and flute, Mack Leighton on bass, and Duncan Moore on drums. The concerts regularly feature other musicians as well, such as Rebecca Jade, Allison Adams Tucker, Lisa Hightower, Mark Lessman, and Danny Green. Each episode has a different theme; past themes have included songs from The Virus Vacuum, Stevie Wonder, and Cream. “Live(ish) from SpragueLand” did not come to fruition without some bumps in the road, according to Peter. He explained that the sound quality of online platforms like Zoom and the slow internet upload speed at SpragueLand Studio presented challenges when he first began. After appealing to cable and internet companies to no avail, he got permission from his neighbor to dig a trench in her yard so that Cox could install the cable needed for faster internet speed. With the help of his friend, Brian, Peter spent two days digging. He also enlisted the assistance of his friend, Steve, to manage video switching during the live performances. Social distancing guidelines required Peter to summon his ingenuity and find new ways of delivering performances safely. Each musician performs from a separate room, equipped with headphones, a microphone, and a video camera, in Peter’s five-room recording studio. While some guests are local musicians, he said that the virtual format has allowed him to collaborate with musi-

cians nationally and internationally, too. One episode featured Danish vocalist Sinne Eeg, while another featured New York City pianist Rob Schneiderman. Non-local musicians record a track prior to the show that Peter Sprague and friends use to complement their live performance. The episodes are produced in an informal style, capturing banter between songs and short interviews with non-local musicians. Peter’s wife, Stefanie, manages a live chat box during performances, providing an opportunity for fans to interact with the musicians in real-time. Now four months into his virtual concert series, Peter expressed satisfaction with the response he has received from fans all over the world, including Europe and Japan. “It’s been super successful and so much fun,” he said. Each concert is free, but there is a virtual tip jar for those who would like to contribute through PayPal, Venmo, or Zelle. Peter said he’d love for “Live(ish) from SpragueLand” to reach an even wider audience and he invites everyone to tune in for the next episode. Episodes are posted on his YouTube channel, www.youtube.com/user/spragueman, every other Thursday. The next one is at 7:30pm on October 22, followed by episodes on November 5 and 19. New Rapid Deploy Absorption Product to Protect Your Home From Water Damage By Andy Lee Two young Oceanside entrepreneurs, and Spillbully Corporation business partners, Carlos Medina and Brian Robinson, want to help you protect your home and business from water leaks and floods. When you leave your home you don’t really know if a water pipe under your kitchen or bathroom sink, or a valve at your washing machine hookup, or the bottom of your water heater has sprung a slow leak and started to drip, drip, drip…and often by the time you find out…sometimes days or weeks later, it’s too late and the water damage has already happened. Medina and Robinson’s 6-year old environmental company in Oceanside, called Spillbully Corporation, has an amazing solution with their new and inexpensive rapid-deploy absorption products called Pronto Sacks and Pronto Snakes. Place a flattened lightweight Pronto Sack under any exposed water pipes. If a leak occurs, the dripping water makes contact with the Pronto Sack. The Pronto Sack immediately absorbs and captures the water. And, as the leaking water gets captured the Pronto Sack rapidly fills and expands and grows without leaking the water out of the sack! Amazingly, the Pronto Sack remains dry! The Pronto Sack captures the water, fills up, and contains the water, so you don’t have severe water damage to your cabinets, walls, and floors! Pronto Sack is 100% environmentally friendly and 100% disposable and acts as added insurance from home water leaks! Another new product, much like the Pronto Sack, is their Pronto Snake! Place the long flat lightweight Pronto Snake at doorways during the rainy season to prevent flooding rainwater from entering your home. The Pronto Snake rapidly fills with water, and when full, becomes a strong barrier that will divert water away from entering your home! Homeowners with poorly constructed sloped patio slabs and walkways often fear when heavy rainstorms occur. Pronto Snakes are 100% environmentally safe and 100% disposable, and act as added insurance from home water floods! Pronto Sacks cost as little as $8 each and are not available yet in retail stores. It’s a very small investment to protect your home! Please view the YouTube video and watch with your own eyes https//youtu.be/F3nkmgkITO. For pricing and to place orders please call (760) 505-3390 or visit www.spillbully.com or call ahead for an appointment to visit their warehouse at 180 Roymar Rd, Suite A, Oceanside, CA 92058. New Leaf’s Impressive Album “Feels Like…” By Andy Lee It was certainly a weird time for San Diego North County’s band, New Leaf, to release their first album “Feels Like...”, during a dreadful COVID-19 pandemic Stay at Home order. I mean, most bands release their album and go on tour, right? Not New Leaf. Although they were solidly booked until the lock down happened, they still decided to release their album, virtually. There really isn’t much of anything conventional about this band. At first you might think they’re a soulful Reggae Ska band because of their upfull Jamaican vibe with a horn section that is unmistakable, but New Leaf’s singer/ songwriter Danny Primavera says, “What you won’t see or hear are fake Jamaican accents. We concentrate on doing ourselves the best we can.” The band agrees that they strive to be different than any other Reggae band around and are influenced by bands from New Zealand and the East Coast. What you will see and hear are a tight group of professional musicians jamin’ with their Leucadia beachstyle proclivity in board shorts with resolute Jamaican Reggae roots influences. Their new album demonstrates how well they sound in a studio, but there’s something stirring about seeing New

Leaf perform live that’s quite authentic and infectious. Infectious in a good way, not a Coronavirus way. They sound great live and always draw big crowds at their shows. Drummer, Scott Clayton, when he’s not working as a booking agent for other bands with his business On Point Promotions, lays down a driving back beat that keeps everyone on their feet, while lead singer/songwriter Danny Primavera sings up front and plays lead with rhythm guitar triads. The band seems to liven up even more when keyboardist, Adam “Jah Mex” Arredondo, bass guitarist, Kevin Vance, and the horns of alto sax, Jeff Dresser and trombone, Logan Stevens, drop in to blend interesting textures together as one. It’s a sight and sound to behold. Love these guys any time and any day with 5 out of 5 leafs on their new album with favorite songs “Down in the Deep,” and the album title “Feels Like….” Listen to and purchase New Leaf’s album “Feels Like…” on Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube, Amazon Music, Pandora, iTunes, and Google Play Store or click on this link https://newleafmusic.bandcamp.com/ album/feels-like.

O’side Turkey Trot Goes Virtual O’side Turkey Trot Race Director Kathy Kinane and her team at the Move Your Feet Before You Eat Foundation

were very indecisive regarding their running event this year on Thanksgiving Day due to the Coronavirus and CDC restrictions. Then the requests came pouring in to have their 15th Anniversary become a Virtual Trot. There have been years when 10,000 runners and walkers have participated in Downtown Oceanside. This years Trotters will be able to register and participate anywhere, anytime, and still be able to raise funds for over 80 local non-profits that serve Oceanside residents. Registration opened on September 10 and it is off to a very good start. To accommodate the Virtual Trotters, participants can choose to have their shirt and medal shipped to them or picked up at 3 different pick up times starting two weeks prior to the trot. This option will help service trotters who are planning to travel. The 2020 Virtual Trot registration fees are set at historic lows to accommodate

those trotters who have been impacted by the financial challenges of COVID-19. $100 gift certificates will go to the Top 15 largest teams over 20 and the top three most popular photos of registered participants in costume that are posed on @osideTurkeyTrot. One of the Trots first teams to register added a little comedy to the current situation by naming their team “Teachers Running Off The Crazy.” Registration is at www.osideturkeytrot.com.
