hen I think of Waipū, I think of the stunning, picturesque cove, dining alfresco opposite, the iconic dairy, long lunches at Pizza Barn and markets offering up enough wares, food (freshly-cooked scallops - mmm) and entertainment to keep me there for hours. Many of us also affiliate it with Scottish bagpipes and kilts.

for paradise has been described as one of the most remarkable in the history of the world. After finally landing in the “virtual paradise” of Waipū and establishing and prospering there, it’s only fitting that the Scottish culture is still celebrated in this township. You can read a little about Waipū’s Scottish heritage on pages 4&5 and find out a heap more at the award-winning Waipū Museum, who have compiled an engaging video documentation of the journey on their website. My interest is piqued enough that I think it will be added to my list of attractions after visiting. Meanwhile, the town is celebrating this month, as it does most years, during the month of July to warm up their winter, attract visitors and just to bring the community together. The line-up of events is on page 10.

As Jackie Kennedy famously said:

‘Pearls are always appropriate’

P

earls falling from the sky as dragons fought amongst the clouds. What an entrancing vision. The ancient Chinese myth conjures the absolute power of wearing this sensual gem. Fierce with a softness that could only have been sent from the heavens. Layers of natural iridescence, a rich beauty that was once merely an oyster’s irritation has now become the embodiment of wisdom and luxury. Pearls are back baby! This quintessential accessory is gracing every glossy page right now, adding the perfect dash of sophistication and class to the fashion world once again. Really though, did these style-enhancing wonders ever leave us?

Wearing your pearls for special occasions is a thing of the past. Break them out of that generational prison and imagine the gracious elegance of our mabe pearl and gold earrings against the structured tailoring of your favourite seasonal blazer, the timelessly cool layering of our extra-long white strand of keshi, wrapped over a comfy cashmere knit or the pure drama of the Tahitian black set in solid 18ct yellow gold. Now that goes with everything! Polished, refined and contemporary, can we call it a trend when we share our love with the infamous and inspiring Cleopatra or read of these treasures among stories of dragons? I think not. Long live the pearl!

Keeping the Scottish spirit alive in Waipū township BY JODI BRYANT

T

he small Bream Bay settlement of Waipū, population around 3,000, just 40km south of Whangārei, is described as a “friendly town with an intriguing history, strong Scottish heritage and spectacular natural surroundings”. Its surroundings include the striking limestone Waipū Caves, with stalactites, stalagmites and a significant population of glow worms, Piroa Falls Track, and the Waipū Coastal Walkway with stunning rock formations similar to the Pancake Rocks. The picturesque expanse of Waipū Cove, overlooking the Hen and Chicken and Sail Rock Islands is a drawcard to the area. This beach is popular for swimming, surfing, fishing, rock-pooling, scenic strolls and family beach days.

cross the road, locals and visitors enjoy open-air dining from an idyllic spot as they watch the world go by. A short walk away is the iconic general store with the nearby popular campsite. In the township, McLeod’s Pizza Barn and Brewery is a destination itself. Another place to pick up fab food is at the Waipū Street Market – a huge, vibrant event combining crafts, food, goods and entertainment - held on long weekends and running down the main street and beyond. The Waipū Boutique Market is a more regular event, held on the second Sunday of every month inside Coronation Hall with around 50 stalls including home-grown produce and goods to art and craft. Nearby cafes offer fabulous coffee and cuisine. Other local attractions include the awardwinning Waipū Museum, which details the fascinating history of the area, art galleries, specialty shops, such as The Chocolate Barn, and golf course. A highlight of the town's calendar is the annual Highland Games held at New Year in a nod to its Scottish heritage, along with the Art ‘n Tartan wearable arts extravaganza in October. Waipū was the centre of a significant Presbyterian settlement led by the charismatic preacher Norman McLeod. The minister led his people from the Highlands of Scotland to

New Zealand via Nova Scotia and Australia. Shiploads containing around 900 settlers arrived at Waipū in the 1850s. They set about the task of establishing a close-knit and highly successful Gaelic speaking community in Waipū. Norman lived happily in Waipū until his death in 1866. Today, the Waipū Migration descendants number in their tens of thousands and those connections continue to be celebrated.

Waipū Business and Community Inc are behind “Love Waipū” and spokesperson Bruce Larson said, what began as “Tartan Week” with the celebration of International Tartan Day on July 1, evolved to “Winter in Waipū”. “Waipū is rich with Scottish heritage and so activities were planned around the tartan theme to liven up the middle of winter. Over a number of years, Waipū Business and Community Inc (Love Waipū) have added activities and grown the celebration to focus on activities to engage the locals during the slow winter period and also to encourage both locals and visitors to come out and participate and hopefully spend a little money in the businesses on the way through.” The calendar of events also brings the community together to catch up, reflect and celebrate the town’s proud Scottish heritage. This year’s line-up began with International Tartan Day celebrations where the children of Waipū Primary and members of the public were encouraged to dress in their tartan. Those present were entertained by a play acting out the plight of the Scottish during the time where the wearing of tartan was prohibited. “The Act of Proscription”, which was passed in 1747, forbade Highland attire, with common legend having it that this included tartan, the playing of pipes and carrying weapons. It was said to be the final death knell for the clan-based way of life that had existed in the Highlands for over a thousand years. However, eventually, the British army would realise that amongst the ranks of the young, dispossessed highland warriors, the tartan and the pipes were of special significance for maintaining morale. And so on July 1, 1782, 40 years and two generations after the infamous ban, the “Act of Proscription” was repealed, making it lawful once again for Scottish Highlanders

to wear tartan and play the pipes. Since then the anniversary of the Repeal Proclamation has been annually celebrated as International Tartan Day. The Waipū Primary Kapa Haka rōpū were also set to perform at this event. Another highlight is the Northpine Waipū Cup Raceday 2021 at Ruakākā Racecourse July 3 where tartan attire is also being encouraged. The Mid-Winter Swim at Waipū Cove Surf Lifesaving Club is the following day for the brave where, again, tartan can be worn. Hot soup and a warm shower are available after with a $5 donation toward the club. July 6 will see the Waipū School Senior Speech finals which will comprise four of the best speakers from Year 4, 5 and 6 delighting audiences with the history of Waipū in a funfilled night of speech with a little added drama on the side.

The Pet Parade with bagpipes is a highlight on the calendar.

The Chocolate Barn

All our chocolate confections are crafted using only premium European couverture chocolate in micro batches in our dedicated chocolate studio in Waipu. Wherever we can we source our ingredients from local suppliers like the macadamia nuts we buy from neighbouring farmers. Its our way of not only of supporting fellow, local businesses but also our way of proudly representing our little corner of New Zealand on the global stage. You can buy our product on our online shop

www.thechocolatebarn.co.nz and in local shops, cafes and markets

To mark Matariki/Maramataka, well-known and respected te reo speaker and teacher VickyJean Stephens (Ngā puhi) shares her knowledge and experience with stories from the ancient and modern Māori worlds on July 9. “On ya bike” is the Waipū big and little bike challenge featuring two-wheeling tots, pedal-powered kids and tread-head parents. Held at Caledonian Park, bike skills are tested with games such as Obstacle Weave, slowriding contest, Ride the Plank, Bike Ramp, Rodeo Race, Pool Noodle Limbo and Follow the Leader. Beer and Bangers combines McLeod’s National Gold Award-winning beer and Millers National Gold award-winning sausages with tickets selling fast. The Tartan Twilight Walk is a cycleway fundraiser for $5 each or $15 for a family and includes a free sausage and glow stick with a coffee and food truck available.

But a Scottish celebration wouldn’t be complete without the bagpipes and you will catch them on July 17 at the annual Pet Parade. For the last four years, the main street is closed as around 30 pets, comprising cats, dogs, rabbits, donkeys and goats dressed in tartan are paraded lead by pipers. There will be prizes for best dressed and a sausage sizzle. *There are various definitions of the meaning of Waipū.

“Waipū Welcomes You”

barn to undergo make-over BY JODI BRYANT

The iconic “Waipū welcomes you” barn will undergo a makeover and the community are being asked for their input. ‘Love Waipū’ Business & Community Inc. were successful in a Whangārei District Council (WDC) Community Funding grant to repaint the barn in collaboration with award-winning Waipū-based mural artist Melinda Butt. The barn is one of the first visual objects seen when travelling SH1 that welcomes

visitors and residents to the area of Waipū and would be the first large-scale artwork when entering the Whangārei district. ‘Love Waipū’ committee member Emma McLean says, “In a post-Covid world, the project aims to uplift the spirits of travellers returning home, and domestic travellers visiting to Waipū or Whangārei district.” She explains: “The artwork will be abstract and geometrical for ease of large-scale paint application. Rather than one set pattern or pictorial theme, the abstract nature of the work is adapted to suit the unique needs of the existing corrugate iron canvas, and the intended viewing distance.

“Enhancing day-to-day experiences, and connecting the wider community to art is a key focus. As a collaborative project, we are keen to hear feedback on what kinds of abstract patterns, colours and vision the community has for a large-scale mural in this location.” Melinda was thrilled to be offered this opportunity. “I have fond memories of my teenage years coming to Waipū in the summer holidays. When driving over the Brynderwyns, seeing the barn was an icon of summer beginning. Now as a Waipū local, having the opportunity to paint the iconic barn is a real treat. I have done a lot of murals in Northland and in Auckland but this

Waipū artist Melinda Butt will be giving the iconic barn a make-over.

is the first time I’ll be creating something in my hometown.” As the grant will not cover the entire cost of the project, the Love Waipū committee is keen to hear from community members who would like to be involved in a working bee day to help prepare the barn for painting, and are currently reaching out to businesses to sponsor the remaining costs such as scaffolding to get the project off the ground. Emma adds the prime location of the barn offers great opportunity for local business sponsors to get maximum impact from being involved. To view Melinda Butt’s murals, go to: https:// www.melindabutt.com/ and for further ideas or if you would like to get involved, please email: secretary@waipu.kiwi or message the Love Waipū Facebook page.

Waikato Family, Dean & Alana McCarthny

Realise their dream of becoming part of the Waipū community It has been a long time coming. Sixteen years of talking, dreaming and making plans for a business up north on the east coast, where we could all work together as a family.

W

ith Dean working offshore and Alana at home with the kids whilst working as an A&E nurse, our lives were so full up and busy that the reality seemed far beyond the realms of possibility that it felt like a safe topic to talk about. One day while on holiday, our favourite conversation came again, this time with someone new, who asked what seems now like the most obvious question which finally put the round peg in the round hole; "What about a Hammer Hardware?" And so began our relentless two-year journey, exploring all kinds of avenues before the magic opportunity to come to Waipū turned up.

One afternoon, Alana was awoken from a night shift haze to a life-changing phone call from the Hammer Hardware head office - we had a store of our own! Suddenly wide awake, Alana called Dean immediately and told him they were packing their bags! Heading north for that initial meeting involved a crazy feeling that the reality of the dream was finally on our doorstep. From that point, a head-spinning few months ensued as we made it through the maze of logistics, moving, selling, buying, then finally taking over the business. We haven't looked back. The adventure was on and we loved it! Taking on the store has been a steep

learning curve but, with the help from the local community, has made the transition much easier, along with the support and expert knowledge of the staff who thankfully stayed on and who we are learning from every day. We couldn't have done it without them. One day a customer came in looking for an alligator clip... Alana literally froze on the spot as a million and one images went through her head as she thought about what that could actually be. It is as it turns out, it was a giant clip with jagged teeth, rather like an alligator! Another time, someone rang up asking if we had a grease gun. We thought that sounded like a lot of fun, like paint ball maybe? But with grease? Turns out, we were a long way off the mark! Sometimes the botanical names of the plants sound more like diseases on a petri dish. A customer thought it was hilarious one day as we confused streptococcus (bacteria in a throat infection) with streptocarpus (a beautiful plant!)

What is The Cove Fish Fry?

A

fter eight successful Frys, some might still not know what it is all about so let me explain: The Cove Fish Fry is basically a surfboard and surf craft ‘show and shine’ day; an excuse to hang out at the Waipū Cove Reserve with like-minded surfers and shapers and look at surfboards and hopefully get a wave or two, catch up with friends, take a few photos and enjoy the atmosphere at this fabulous location. Waipū Cove is a dream spot to hold the event with a stunning white sand East Coast beach stretching for miles up the Bream Bay coastline with a pohutukawa-laden headland, friendly locals and, of course, the stunning reserve itself, which is run by the Waipū Cove Reserve committee who let us use the area for the day. Much-appreciated by all the surfers and surf craft admirers. It is always a fun day with all sorts of waveriding equipment. So far, every year has seen some amazing surfboards emerge from under bachs and holiday homes, dusted off and displayed. Some boards have been absolute jaw-dropping pieces of New Zealand surfing history. Surfing has exploded in popularity in recent

years, not only in Northland but around the world. More youth are finding their feet and a massive growth in ladies are taking up the pastime. It is great to see, not only the ladies surfing, but also surfing with great skill and grace, giving the lads a run for their money. Some keen surfers and crafts people have been inspired by the event to make their own surf crafts, which has been fun to document and display on The Cove Fish Fry Facebook page and blog: facebook.com/thecovefishfry

Sadly, it is unknown when we will see overseas surfers and shapers again but this gives us the opportunity to focus more on the New Zealand-made boards and some of the many talented New Zealand backyard builders. At previous events, the fabulous Bull Kelp Surfers band have performed a few sets and been a real crowd-pleaser. They are a supertalented group of surf-inspired musicians. I am always blown away by the amazing,

So, while it may seem in the distant future; mark your calendars for next year to bring your surfboards, paint them up, bring a camera and get a few shots. Bring the kids and a packed lunch, come listen to some cool laid-back surf music, sit under the beautiful Pohutukawa trees and soak up the vibe. The dedicated followers of fashion are having an interesting time this winter. 2021 winter trends are well-entrenched with an emphasis on styles straight out of the seventies and they’re not all pretty. It is a season of extremes and you have every right to feel apprehension. Take that long-line knit dress that we would have rocked in our twenties. Four decades later it doesn’t just skim the curves, it fuses to them, exposing bulges that challenge any shapewear and can only be remedied with layering. At the other end of the spectrum is the exaggerated oversized look, the sweatshirt dress or shirt teamed back with hefty platform boots to create a shapeless silhouette that is chunky, chunky, chunky. Flattering no, fun yes! The re-return of the hooded sweatshirt, the extra comfortable home-wear one with fleecy inner, is oversized and boxy and back on trend. Tossed over jeans or joggers that are not matchy-matchy, this shapeless little number is essential for wet weekends with Netflix, or popping out for a coffee with friends. Probably the most controversial winter 2021 trend dominating the tabloids this season is the dramatic shakeup of the jean.

Our comfort zones have been seriously rattled. That skinny jean we’ve coveted over the last ten years has been unceremoniously dumped by the fashion gurus, tossed out with the bath water and usurped by high-waisted flares, relaxed fitted straights and wide-leg crops. As retailers we have been caught with our pants down, just like Lord. The search for these high fashion trend setters has been frantic. We didn’t see it coming and neither did our wholesalers. Personally we don’t like them. Wide-leg, high-wasted cropped jeans suit 10 per cent of the population and they are all under 30 with waists and legs eleven. For the remainder of us blessed with short chunky legs and Christmas ham thighs, those highwaisted, wide leg pants spell FAT, FAT, and FAT. First time around at least we had a waist to enhance our curves, but now it’s just rectangle, box and square. There just isn’t a good option unless you have legs to die for. However, all is not lost, the bootleg jean is a more hopeful option for fashion trenders. They are slim on the thigh and with a 3-inch platform heel hidden under the flare, they lengthen the leg look. Phew, we are still in with the ‘New Trend’! The dedicated followers of fashion right now must be our youth; young gorgeous girls who wear anything. We celebrate that and we’re very happy to leave them to rock the trend, while we stick to our oversized jumpers, bootlegs and skinny jeans.

Collagen Boosting Skin Treatments There’s no denying that collagen is the it-girl of the skin health game right now.

A

nd with the name ‘collagen’ currently flashing everywhere in bright shiny lights, we can confirm she is fundamental in holding everything together. Why? Collagen encourages cell renewal to replace dead skin cells and minimises the development of wrinkles. The result? Firmer, plumper more youthful skin! Collagen - you go girl! So, without further ado, let’s discuss exactly what treatments we offer at Caci that can help you to produce more of the superstar that is collagen. Because after-all, the superpower of collagen is that by stimulating its growth, it causes a domino effect. I.e. the more you have, the more your body can produce and maintain! Fractional CO2 Laser Fractional CO2 Laser is the ultimate in collagen induction as it creates the most advanced controlled wound response of all Caci treatments. This controlled damage will cause our bodies to start producing all of that collagen tissue we love to be stronger and firmer than before. To go a little more in depth, Fractional CO2 Laser uses a carbon dioxide laser that works

to tighten, resurface, and strengthen the skin. This process helps to address skin elasticity, scarring and fine lines and wrinkles. The small areas of skin treated prompts a cascade of healing and growth factors which pull the skin together and strengthen its integrity. The healing process is the part which helps to create more collagen. *Enter plumper, more resilient skin* Microneedling Microneedling is another amazing option for collagen stimulation. This treatment uses micro needles to penetrate skin, triggering our body’s own wound healing response. Which as we just learnt, when our skin is damaged, it produces new and improved collagen tissue. Vitamins and amino acids are the building blocks for collagen production; during a Microneedling treatment, a combination of hyaluronic acid, multi-vitamins and amino acids are infused to boost collagen production even more for healthier looking skin. Microneedling is great for treating acne scarring and suitable for most skin types. Skin Conditioning Treatments To support Caci’s advanced collagen stimulating treatments, we can also recommend their non-invasive correcting skin conditioning treatments with collagen inducing benefits. Red Light Therapy is a treatment that

stimulates our fibroblasts which stimulates collagen. Fibroblasts are the principle active cell of connective tissue and play a critical role in wound healing. Microdermabrasion, a popular exfoliating treatment, causes inflammation in the skin. This inflammation results in stimulating collagen to help to rejuvenate the skin. And Caci’s Sonophoresis Skincare Infusion; a treatment which uses soundwaves to deeply penetrate active ingredients towards the skin’s

dermis. These active ingredients can consist of vitamin C and peptides, both encourage the stimulation of collagen. INTERESTED? Chat to the skin health experts at Caci Whangārei. Their consultations are always complimentary. Visit their beautiful clinic on Clyde St, Whangārei. Or caci.co.nz

Dandruff Vs. Dry Scalp

What’s The Difference And What Do You Do About Each? Hair tips from Biolage. Biolage is recognised worldwide as a leader in the professional hair care field, and that reputation continues to grow. Biolage is constantly improving – taking hair care to new levels by offering high-performance, professional-quality products powered by botanicals.

I

s your black clothing in permanent storage? Are you always sneaking glances at your shoulders, ready to brush away embarrassing white flakes? Is your scalp constantly itchy? Wondering what’s going on? The answer could be dandruff. Or it could be dry scalp. Each is a very different situation. Here’s how to figure out the difference and understand how to treat each one..

Do You Have Dandruff? There’s a big difference between dandruff and ordinary dry scalp. Dandruff is caused when your body has an inflammatory response to an overabundance of yeast production on the scalp. It can be caused by a condition called

seborrheic dermatitis, or by a fungus called malassezia. The latter fungus lives on the scalp normally, but if you have too much of it, it causes the skin cells to multiply more quickly than normal. Dandruff flakes will stick to the scalp and to your hair brush more readily than the powdery white flakes associated with dry scalp. Dandruff flakes are larger and look oily. Dandruff also causes your scalp to become oily, red, scaly and itchy. You could also have a condition that is similar to dandruff, such as eczema or psoriasis. Consult your doctor if you are unclear. Do You Have Dry Scalp? If you’ve ruled out all of the above, it’s very

How Do You Get Rid of Dandruff? If you determine that your unwanted flakes are caused by dandruff, what is the next step? Most medical experts recommend use of an anti-fungal shampoo containing salicylic acid to remove the build-up of dead skin cells or a shampoo containing zinc pyrithione to kill the fungus that causes dandruff. Biolage pros recommend a shampoo with anti-bacterial and calming ingredients like pyrithione zinc and mint leaf. Shampoo your hair frequently to prevent oil from building up. How Do You Get Rid of Dry Scalp? Treating dry scalp is a lot like treating dry skin. Unlike dandruff, which is a case of too much

oil, dry scalp is a case of not enough oil being produced by the scalp. Some of the most effective strategies include: • Use gentle shampoos. Harsh formulas can strip away your scalp’s natural oils so look for shampoos with rich, moisturizing, natural-origin ingredients. • Shampoo less frequently. Not shampooing frequently enough can exacerbate symptoms of dandruff, but too-frequent shampooing can aggravate a dry scalp. Try to skip a few days between shampoos. If you feel that’s too long to go between washings, consider a low-shampoo cleansing conditioner that will freshen your hair and scalp without stripping away your scalp’s natural oils. • Oil your scalp. Occasional scalp treatments with treatment oils can restore moisture and soothe irritation. Apply a few drops of oil, section by section and massage it into your scalp. • Exfoliate your scalp. Exfoliation does wonders for a dry scalp. You can opt for an actual scrub, or a hair mask formula containing fruit enzymes, sugar or salicylic acid which won’t require tugging or rubbing. • Drink more water. It sounds simple, but the quickest way to hydrate your skin and scalp is to hydrate your body. That means drinking loads of water – experts recommend at least eight 8-ounce glasses a day.

possible your scalp is just plain dry. After all, scalp is skin, and like the skin elsewhere on your body, it requires your body’s natural oils (known as sebum) to keep it supple and hydrated. If that sebum production slows, your scalp will feel dry, tight and itchy. Things that can cause dry scalp include: • External conditions like cold, dry weather or hot, dry forced indoor heat in the winter. • Internal dehydration from your diet or lifestyle. • A build-up of styling products. • Overindulging in hats or wigs that prevent oxygen from reaching your scalp. • Stress.

Precious Metals: 7 Metallic Makeup Picks To Add To Your Kit

VIVA.CO.NZ

From soft, shimmering shadows to high-impact glitters, put the pedal to the metal with the newest wave of metallic makeup to lift your complexion (and spirits)

F

oil-like finishes never seem to go out of style — what with their radiance-boosting, light-diffusing powers that promise to revive lacklustre complexions. If you tend to shy away from glitter out of fear of it migrating or decorating your bathroom sink, you’ll be pleased to note the newest wave of formulas glean long-lasting effects minus fallout, fading or creasing. Achieve a mess-free metallic eye by applying a little bit of eye primer to your eyelids before going in with your chosen colour — it’ll help create a smooth, even base. In lieu of an eye primer, consider a tiny bit of foundation or concealer instead. Prevent your eye look from verging on a 1980s throwback by confining your colour to eyelids and under-eyes only. Anything higher (up towards your brow bone or temple) may come off looking dated or overdone.

Keep your finishes and textures balanced by opting for a matte eyeshadow layered with a metallic option on top. While it’s fine to mix your finishes, you want to keep to the same texture for maximum blendability — e.g., liquids with liquids, creams with creams and powders with powders. Now's not the time to bust out your fluffy blending brush, instead look for a flat, densely bristled brush for better precision as you pack on colour. For more opacity, lightly wet your brush with water or mixing medium. If you do end up with a bit of fall out, dust it away with a clean fluffy brush or spoolie. Metallic eyeshadow makes enough of a statement, but if you desire something punchier, try applying an extra sharp flick of metallic eyeliner along your upper lash line. Discover our picks of illuminating hues and dazzling textures.

Nars Summer Solstice Eyeshadow Palette, $83. Though we’re closing to the winter solstice than the summer one, this luminous new limited-edition compact by Nars is getting us excited for the warmer months that lie ahead. All nine eyeshadow pans promise strong colour pay-off and luminous dimension, from metallic ruby and rusted pink to shimmering golden copper or rose gold. Its thanks to Nars pigment power suspension technology — where pure colour pigments are suspended in an innovative liquid binding system for rich, long-wearing colour in just one swipe. From a super precise cat eye to a bold statement look, the ultra-fine applicator of Chantecaille’s Les Pearles Metallic Eye Liner, $71, enables you to create a variety of metallic eye looks. Available in four luminous shades — from gleaming silver to shimmering violet — the highly pigmented, long-lasting formula lends the prettiest sheen to your peepers. Trace along the upper lash line to enhance your eye shape, or extend up towards your brow for a more dramatic effect. Available from Mecca or online at Meccabeauty.co.nz.

Be enlightened by Jane Iredale’s Solar Flare Eyeshadow Kit, $102, a five-pan eyeshadow palette promising crease-resistant colour. The mineral makeup harnesses the plant power of botanical extracts to care for all skin types. Allow out-of-this world shade names like Cosmic, Sunspot, and Aurora inspire you to take your makeup look to dizzying new heights. Available from selected day spas, online retailers or see Psb.net.nz.

For a product inspired by molten metals, the new Revlon So Fierce! Chrome Ink Liquid Liner, $30, is surprisingly lightweight. Anyone who wears liquid liner regularly will delight over the water-ink formula, which wears comfortably and sets quickly — meaning it won’t smudge or transfer to your upper eyelid. With one stroke of the tapered plush felt tip, this high-intensity metallic liner delivers a multi-dimensional chrome finish but with no glitter fall out. Plus, a dip-ink cap reservoir prevents the tip from drying out. Available in two shades, Gunmetal and Bronzage, from selected department stores and pharmacies.

The new My Clarins makeup collection appeals to the playful side of all of us, with its range of five vegan-friendly products harnessing fruit and plant extracts like goji berry, cocoa butter, cranberry and coconut oils in their formulas. Viva loves My Clarins My Shimmer Drops, $39, a pearlescent liquid highlighter that offers a luminous glow to the complexion when applied to cheekbones, the bridge of the nose and cupid’s bow. Available from selected department stores and pharmacies, or online at Clarinsnewzealand.co.nz.

Bobbi Brown Metallic Eyeshadow, $56. Shine on with single-pan shades that promise even application and long-lasting wear. Assemble your favourite assortment of shades to create your own palette, or stash individual compacts separately. Use in conjunction with Bobbi Brown’s regular Eye Shadows for a multi-dimensional look: sweep the lightest shade of Eye Shadow from the lash line to brow bone, before smudging a slightly darker shade of Metallic Eye Shadow on the lower lid up to the crease. Available from selected department stores or online at Bobbibrowncosmetics.com.

Holographic and hypnotic, the new Napoleon Perdis Metalslicks Liquid Eyeliners, $39, boast a long-lasting and fast-drying formula that lends a striking dose of colour to any eye look. Prepare to dazzle by layering over your pick of glow-giving eyeshadow or wear solo for a touch of twinkle. Use short, small strokes close to the lash line for a more subtle effect, or perfect for your feline flick by marking out where your cat eye will end before working your way backwards to the inner corner of the eye. Available from the Napoleon Perdis counters inside Smith & Caughey’s, or online at Smithandcaugheys.co.nz.

GLAUCOMA

GLAUCOMA:

the silent disease Glaucoma, the leading cause of preventable blindness that about 115,000 New Zealanders have but only 50 per cent of those know they have.

G

laucoma is a silent disease; you can be legally blind before you notice the symptoms loss of peripheral vision. Early detection of glaucoma is vital when it comes to preventing blindness. That means having an eye examination for glaucoma every five years from the age of 45 and every three years from the age of 60. However, if at any age, you notice changes in your eyesight, you should have your eyes examined. The good news is that 98 per cent of those who comply with their prescribed treatment for glaucoma will not go blind.

What is Glaucoma? Glaucoma is the name given to a group of eye diseases where the optic nerve at the back of the eye is slowly destroyed. In most people the damage is due to increased pressure inside the eye – a result of blockage of the circulation of aqueous (fluid), or its drainage. In others, the damage may be caused by poor blood supply to the vital optic nerve fibres, or a weakness in the structure of the nerve, and/or a problem in the health of the nerve fibres themselves.

Types of Glaucoma: Open-angle glaucoma is the most common form of glaucoma and happens when the eye’s drainage canals resist the outflow of fluid. This results in the pressure in the eye increasing because the fluid cannot drain out. Normal Pressure Glaucoma is when the optic nerve is damaged even though eye pressure is within the normal range 1222mmHg. Angle Closure Glaucoma occurs if the path of fluid to the angle narrows or becomes blocked. Traumatic Glaucoma is any glaucoma caused by an injury to the eye. This type of glaucoma can occur both immediately after an injury to the eye or years later. Pseudoexfoliation Syndrome PXF (or Exfoliation Syndrome) In PXF, flaky white

material clogs the trabecular meshwork which is a filter-like tissue responsible for draining the aqueous humor from the eye via the anterior chamber. Juvenile Glaucoma - Babies and children can develop glaucoma. Pigment Dispersion Syndrome (PDS)/ Pigmentary glaucoma is when black pigment granules clog the trabecular meshwork. Eye Exam A comprehensive exam, can reveal more risk factors, such as high eye pressure, thinness of the cornea, and abnormal optic nerve anatomy. A glaucoma test usually includes: • Optic nerve check • Slit Lamp examination • Eye pressure check(Tonometry) • Visual field and/or OCT scan

Can glaucoma be treated? Yes. Immediate treatment for early stage, open-angle glaucoma can delay progression of the disease. While these treatments may save remaining vision, they do not improve any sight already lost from glaucoma. Medicines, in the form of eye drops or pills, are the most common early treatment for glaucoma. Some medicines cause the eye to make less fluid, others lower pressure by helping fluid drain from the eye. Other treatments if drops fail include Laser trabeculoplasty /iridotomy, surgical trabeculoplasty.

Basic facts about glaucoma: • There are different types of glaucoma, but they all involve damage to the optic nerve • Glaucoma is not curable • If you have glaucoma it must be monitored for the rest of your life. Current treatments for glaucoma all aim to lower eye pressure. Medication in eye drops can have sideeffects on other parts of your body. Tell your eye specialist. • People of all ages can get glaucoma • Risk factors include a family history, over60, Asian, African American, Hispanic, Steroid users.

TIPS

F

for Running and Walking in the Cold

or some, winter is the time to pack up their running or walking shoes until spring. The problem with that thinking, however, is that you’ll have to start all over building up the endurance and stamina you lost over the winter months when you start back in the spring. If you dress, hydrate, and fuel yourself well, there's no reason you can't run or walk year-round. Listed below are a few tips to keep you safe and help prepare you for cold weather running or walking. Fuel Up – When your body temperature drops, your appetite is stimulated. This happens because food provides the fuel needed to warm the body. Because of this, active individuals need to “feed the fire” before a winter workout as well as after. Make sure you’re feeding that fire with quality complex carbohydrates such as whole grains. Don't Forget Your Feet – Remember to keep your piggies warm too! Moisture-wicking

Top It Off – Around 40 per cent of your body heat goes right out your head, so cover it up! Trapping this heat will help your body have more heat to distribute to the rest of your body. Be sure your head covering is made of moisture-wicking material (not cotton). Drink Up – Be sure to hydrate well. Runners and walkers often think because they don't

Save It – Your body takes longer to warm up during cold weather. Overdoing it on a cold day can spell trouble — a pulled muscle. Be sure to start out slowly to help your muscles warm up. Save your really hard workouts for milder days or do them indoors on a treadmill. Be Seen – Winter runs/walks are often done in the dark or at least some of the run/walk may be done in darkness. Be sure to wear lightcolored, reflective clothing and/or a reflective vest. A handheld flashlight or a headlamp is a must on early-morning and night time runs. Dry Off – When you're finished, get out of those damp clothes and into dry clothing as soon as possible to avoid getting chilled.

Layer it – Dressing in layers is the best way to stay warm during an outside winter workout. A thin moisture-wicking t-shirt makes a good base layer. A top layer made out of something such as polyester and/or nylon that will breathe, but also protect you from the wind, is a good idea. Treat the lower half of your body the same way. Running tights will help keep your legs warm.

appear to sweat as much in the winter, they don't need to hydrate as much. Actually you can perspire as much, if not more, in the winter as you do during the summer. Typically, it’s not as humid in the winter months, so your perspiration evaporates quickly leaving no or very little evidence that you’ve been sweating.

socks made of synthetic fibers (not cotton) will help keep your feet dry. On really cold days topping those moisture-wicking socks with micro-fiber or wool socks will help keep your feet toasty. Because of the added bulk, you may have to go up a shoe size for your winter runs.

While that is still a concern, our musicians are raring to go.” Four Australian bands are hopping the ditch in the travel bubble, if current rules continue. “We really hope they can make it as they will bring a fantastic vibe to the weekend. The Aussies were adamant they wanted to be here.” Shirley is busy co-ordinating 42 bands from New Zealand and Australia, including several big bands. Some of the biggest names in jazz and blues are scheduled to perform at the festival, including blues icon Midge Marsden and Chet O’Connell, Nairobi Trio and Kokomo.

Top Australian acts include Croaker and the Honeybee, a duo from Byron Bay, Acid Bleed, a five-piece band that plays a virtuoso blend of hot gypsy swing jazz with a Latin groove, as well as the big man of Australian blues music, guitarist Mike Elrington, and The Oz, Andrew Farrell. Fans of big bands can watch the Basin City Big Band, Katikatz, Lex Pistols, Lindisfarne Jazz Band, Mt Maunganui College Band and the Warkworth Big Band. Recently returned to New Zealand from living and performing in London, jazz, pop and soul singer Mandy Meadows will feature with her hot

itting in the motorcycle display at the Packard Motor Museum, is a 500cc Vincent Comet. If uld asked, many enthusiasts would claim that Vincent motorcycles were the most famous in the world. Perhaps the best known were the Black Shadow, the Black Lightening (A A racing version of the Black Shadow), and the Comet. The Comet was produced from 1935 to 1954. While the Black Shadow and the Lightening g were 1000cc vee-twins, the Comet was the small brother, a 500cc single overhead-valve engine with exceptionally smooth power delivery and a top speed of 90mph. But it was the looks of these bikes that really grabbed attention, with their black-gloss tanks, silvery,

light alloy frames, sparkling chrome and stainless steel. The Comet was built with the same frame as the Shadow or the Lightening, the difference only being the engine.

Fishing tips & tales

I

have heard some interesting/exciting reports of very large trevally being caught in the northern Bay of Islands area and around the many bays and headlands further north. They have not been caught in big numbers but are so big they are thought to likely be GTs (Giant Trevally). These large very powerful fish can grow to 50kg and are a formidable sportfish normally found in tropical waters. It would be very exciting if they became established here. Although a few snapper are being caught in Whangārei Harbour, the number of fish is small and it is hard work to find them. However, there a few trevally and kahawai being caught. The water temperature outside our harbour is around 6 degrees warmer and is a better bet to get a good snapper feed. Along the “Mad Mile” is always worth a winter fish and using a good berley will

What made these bikes infamous was, they were fast, light and the ride was said to be more like sitting on a horse than a motorcycle as

the frame was hinged in the middle to allow a constantly varying saddle angle. The Vincent business began in 1928, when Conrad Vincent purchased the motorcycle manufacturer, HRD (Howard Raymond Davies – named for its founder) to develop his own line of motorcycles. Initially the motorcycles were known as Vincent-HRD. But it was his son Philip that took the name Vincent and the motorcycles produced to a new level. Philip was obsessed with trying to build the perfect motorcycle. Some say he succeeded, when from 1946 on, he produced his B series and C series bikes. However, in 1955, Vincent brought out the Black Knight and the Black Prince but these were poorly received, so in 1955 the company closed its doors.

help heaps. Out in our Colville Channel there are many good winter spots. When travelling, watch your sounder for fish activity as this is often a good way to find new spots and get a good feed. The Mokohinaus and the Hen and Chicken Islands are well worth a look over winter also.

A few recent reports: well-known Onerahi fisher “Rocket” recently returned a good feed of snapper outside Whangārei harbour. Phill fished on the way over to the Chicks, again a nice snapper catch, plus a number of succulent pink maomao. The maomao all measured around 400mm, very good fish. From the

Mokohinaus, more snapper caught and some monster pink maomao up to 600mm long; my NZ fishing reference book says they grow to 500mm long, so these fish were exceptional size. Yum! Tarakihi should soon be turning up on our inshore areas 50m and deeper and, if we are lucky, maybe a few small hapuka as well. Bigger hapuka move into shallower water during colder months and can become easier to catch. Some good spots are around the Mokes and around the wreck of the Niagara. If fishing around this wreck, use weaker line onto old sinkers as it is common to hook onto the wreck better to break off a sinker than lose good gear and/or hapuka. A tip: as a lot of our winter fishing involves ledger rigs, make sure you ONLY use old weathered sinkers, this can make a huge difference to your catch numbers. Good luck

Things to Do in Northland

Live musical theatre is back With a bang this month (July 16-31), with Whangārei Theatre Company's production of 'West Side Story'. It's a fast-moving and exciting re-telling of Shakespeare's ‘Romeo and Juliet’, set on the mean streets of New York in the late 1950s. Two rival gangs - the Jets and the Sharks - are involved in an ongoing battle over territory on the city's Upper West Side. A member of the Jets, Tony, meets and falls instantly in love with Maria, whose brother is the leader of the Sharks. As the gang conflict deepens, the smitten couple are torn between loyalty to their families and where they’ve come from, and their love for one another. "It opens in a happy and colourful way, but soon turns in a very dark direction," said Director Alan Palmer, who's making a return to Northland to take the reins of the production. In the 1980s, Alan founded Northland Youth Theatre. He was director of Forum North in Whangārei and, in 1993, began teaching acting at Northland Polytechnic, eventually becoming programme manager for the Arts. Overseeing the production of such a wellknown musical is an exciting challenge he said, "but it's been wonderful to see the breadth and quality of young talent”. The cast draws on the Theatre Company's pool of young actors to form the two groups - the colourfully dressed Puerto Rican Sharks, and the all-American

Jets. Energetic dance scenes combine with well-known songs including 'Jet Song', 'Maria', 'America', and 'I Feel Pretty' in this highlyentertaining show. Taking the part of love-struck Tony is Cam Dow, who played the title role in WTC's production of 'Phantom of the Opera' at Forum North. He's been involved with the company since moving to the city in 2016, playing parts in productions of 'The Wizard of Oz', 'Jesus Christ Superstar', and most recently 'Shrek', among others. It's Dow's first time working alongside Alan Palmer, and he's drawn confidence from the director's extensive experience. "Alan is really clear about what he wants," Dow said. "We've put a lot of work into unpacking the dialogue, understanding line-by-line why the characters are using the words they choose." He said getting the famous balcony scene exactly right has been important. "It's humbling to be part of something so iconic in musical theatre.” Dow has found being in love a very difficult emotion to act: “It’s easy to go over-thetop and make a mess of it,” he said. Playing opposite him, 18 year-old rising star Tamaragh Potter says the part of Maria is a dream role. "I enjoy Maria for her innocence and purity," she said. Potter has previously been picked for Shakespeare Globe Centre performances in 'Henry V' and 'Much Ado about Nothing'. "I auditioned for Maria as it's such a change from the more dominant characters I'm used to playing,” she said. Both she and Cam Dow pay tribute to the strength of the supporting cast. "There are so many new faces coming through," said Dow. "A lot of young talent, it's a very exciting time for the Theatre Company.”

A look back to now ‘A look back to now’ at Hangar Gallery celebrates the extensive creative talent of artist and poet Piet Nieuwland. This exhibition is an exciting combination of new and older vibrant paintings and intricate drawings with an environmental kaupapa. Piet’s interest in fauna, flora and the landscape of Aotearoa features prominently in his work. The exhibition preview will include the launch of Piet’s new poetry book ‘As light into water.’ This latest book of engaging and complex poetry was published by Cyberwit and features cover art by Piet. There will also be a launch of an LP record titled ‘Dark Side Moon Yoga and Wetland’ by The Dirty Runts featuring poetry readings by Piet Nieuwland. Piet Nieuwland is a productive and enthusiastic creative of Whangārei. As a poet, his work features in the Civic Arcade mural, and he is the editor of Northland's annual poetry anthology Fast Fibres Poetry. He coven’s the monthly gatherings of poets at ONEONESIX and the National Poetry Day events throughout Northland. At the inaugural Whangārei Fringe Festival 2021 he featured in ‘Intangential’ a very well received collaboration of music, poetry and dance. His poems and flash fiction have been widely published in Aotearoa NZ, Australia, USA, India and elsewhere. Piet has established a reputation as a visual artist, he presented a stunning visual

and poetic Pechakucha performance at the Old Library, and has exhibited solo shows at ArtSouls Gallery and Manaia Arts as well as numerous poetry and art exhibitions at the Geoff Wilson and Hangar Galleries. His poems and art grace a new anthology Take Flight, and he features in Creative Conservation, a new book of conservation artists from around Aotearoa. His earlier poetry books such as The Metabolic Circus, Mobileyezation, and Tzarinas Equinoctal were limited editions with unique hand created covers illustrated with his characteristic pen drawings. As a self-taught poet and artist without any formal training he has carved his own path beyond the whims and vicissitudes of popular taste. This has required persistence and a long-term step-by-step view of success in parallel to a full time job supporting the lives of his three children. Exhibition opening on Friday July 16, 5:30-7:30pm at HANGAR GALLERY, 14 Cross St, Whangārei.

Our range of glass protection products fill these tiny valleys, leaving the glass smooth and water repellent. These surfaces become low maintenance, or easy to clean, similar to a high quality nonstick frying pan.

Glass or tiled splashbacks can stop being such a chore! A simple wipe with a damp cloth will remove splatter, or toothpaste splashes.

Reduce maintenance time and costs on your glass roofs & facades, shop fronts, hotel showers, railings, sky-lights & more!

Diamond Fusion easyClean is an unbeatable application for all silica based surfaces, such as Showers, Splash-backs, Tiles, Glass Balustrades, Exterior Glass, plus Automotive, Marine, and Commercial Glass.

Building the perfect home on your own land If you are thinking about moving homes because your family is growing or you need more space, it could be the right time to think about building from scratch.

D

id you know that building a new home doesn’t mean it has to be in an already mapped-out subdivision? Generation Homes can tailor any of our 200 architecturally designed plans to suit your block and its location. When building new, you can choose a layout that fits your exact needs, and more importantly, your growing needs. If your family size is changing, you can even configure your house plan to suit. Generation Homes regional director David Skudder says, “More people are choosing to build new homes – that way they get exactly what they want”. Housing trends vary greatly across New Zealand, but the biggest factors influencing homeowners are budget and the size of your section. A successful house plan should meet the future needs of the homeowner. All our plans have the adaptability to include

variations that are unique to each individual homeowner. It’s common for us to take a three or four-bedroom plan and configure it to a customer’s needs and lifestyle. In New Zealand, a dual trend has emerged where people with large sections are opting for the ‘bigger is better’ approach, while smaller pocket developments are looking to maximize space and functionality. Large galley kitchens with sculleries, alfresco living and outdoor dining areas, double showers and extravagant walk-in wardrobes are taking precedence on larger lots, while smaller plans are making the most of open plan living. Northland is an ideal location to build a new home, with the area offering a wide range of

cultural, recreation and sporting facilities. This makes it the perfect destination for anyone chasing an active retirement or a healthy lifestyle to raise a family. We have show homes right across the region, including in Tikipunga and One Tree

Point. Part of our passion for home building is to ensure we are keeping up with the trends, and this means that we make sure our house plans move with the times. For example, our Pavilion Range – with seven different plans – has been designed with modernity and family living in mind. We also have a range of three to four-bedroom plans catering to smaller sections such as the Acacia plan or the Brookfield plan which focuses on open living space with perks such as a walk-in wardrobe and computer nook. Not only do you get exactly what you want in a new build with us – there are some extra perks. One of the most attractive advantages of building new is exactly that – it’s new! There are no historical problems or hidden surprises to worry about. You’ll also save big on energy costs. Today’s homes are far more energy efficient than homes built even as little as five years ago. Many new homes offer double or even triple-pane windows that save you energy and money when it comes to heating and cooling your home. The bottom line is that when you’re building a new home with us – you get exactly what you’ve always dreamed of. DESIGNING

for wellness Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz reminded us on that fateful trip, remember? “There’s no place like home,” she told us. She was right, home should be our haven, our place of refuge – somewhere we can feel calm and content.

W

ho would have expected a global pandemic to emphasise this so greatly? The time we spend at home has increased, with many of us working and learning for longer at the kitchen table or study. Because of this, we’re focusing more on our habitat and many of us are rethinking how it works for us and our wellbeing. Part of slowing down means a chance to reconsider. We know when our home isn’t making us feel good – if we’ve outgrown it or if it leaves us feeling frustrated. When you walk around your home, what makes your heart sing? What irritates you? Our homes should be an extension of ourselves so as to emphasis who we are in return. Small changes to our homes for the better can have huge effects on our happiness. Our homes, more than ever, have become places in which to become more indful. Choosing soft neutral colours helps to calm our minds and create a sense of well-being in a peaceful, nurturing environment. Selecting calming warm earthy tones, coastal-inspired palettes or nature-evoking greens are all great starting points.

Of course, colour is subjective, the soothing effect of a coffee cream might be someone’s else’s idea of lacking vitality. But there are a few things to consider. How do certain colours make you feel? Is this a short-term effect or do you want to be around them on a daily basis? Take note of nature. Blue is the superstar colour of the moment, bringing with it a sense of clarity, peace and strength – honouring the same tranquillity of the sky and the ocean. Dusty shades are holding their own right now and work wonders when creating a relaxing, tranquil space in the home. Try the softness of Resene Duck Egg Blue – timeless and soothing – or go a touch bolder with Resene Blue Bayoux or Resene Juniper in its Nordic bluegreen glory. Once you’ve cleared out the visual clutter, let these blue get rid of the mental clutter, leading you to a calmer space.

Other restful hues are Resene Dust Storm or Resene Bud that will help encourage a sense of wellbeing. If you’re drawn to something more energised try sunny yellow, reds or oranges, such as Resene Golden Sand, Resene Red Oxide or Resene Whiskey Sour. When designing an interior to enhance the feeling of wellness it really starts with identifying colours that physiologically fit your profile or those in your family, says Laura. “Generally, you will find the traditional tones of cool blues and greens will stimulate wellness the most, which is why we mainly see these colours in medical facilities,” she says. Wellness isn’t a one size fits all type of design scenario. “While an introvert might prefer Resene Secrets, an extrovert’s wellbeing would be balanced with an offset combo of Resene Smoky Green with an energising but muted Resene Sunbaked. It is about building your palette to suit your personality and the mindset outcome that you want to achieve, then selecting specific pieces to style with.” Soft lighting and soft colours are key, says artist Greer Clayton. “Colours that are similar

Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen is good for a soothing but durable finish. Sage greens and nature colours like Resene Quill Grey, Resene Green Spring and Resene Ravine could be used on cabinetry to introduce colour and calm.” Resene colour consultant Brenda Ngatai suggests using paints with no volatile organic compound in them, such as Resene Zylone Sheen Zero and paints with renewable materials such as Resene EarthSense Ceiling Paint. “Keeping the paint finishes in a lowsheen or flat gives a feeling of calmness to an interior space,” Brenda says. Remove messy physical and visual clutter and surrounding yourself with homeware that inspires you. It might be time to get rid of those heavy curtains that are obstructing your windows and replace them with something visually lighter. Bring in the outdoors with air purifying plants – the Peace Lilly is an easy-care option. How noisy is your home? Constant background noise can add to your stress levels so consider retrofitting double glazing or high hedge planting to deter unwanted noise. The Golden Rules of Proportion:

Decor Laws You Need to Know HOUZZ AUSTRALIA & NEW ZEALAND (HOUZZ.CO.NZ)

Have you ever walked into a room and it just felt right, but you couldn’t put your finger on exactly why? Chances are that proportion was a key factor – whoever designed the room would have paid careful attention to getting the size and scale of the furniture and accessories just right for the space.

B

reaking it all down for Savvy Homes readers, leading home renovation and design platform Houzz shares the recipe behind a perfectly balanced room, with expert advice gathered from its community of interior design professionals. Place pieces with purpose Furnishing a room is more involved than simply placing a few pieces of furniture in a space – some fundamental rules of design need to be considered, and one of the most important being is proportion. Proportion considers the

as using a tall floor lamp to add some height to a corner, while providing a lovely ambient light source. With this rule, another example is with a tall cabinet or bookcase to add visual interest as well as storage.

relationship between the pieces themselves as well as the space that contains them. A room looks and feels right when the proportions are harmonious, there’s neither too little nor too much furniture in the space. If the furniture is too big, the flow of the room can feel awkward. If it’s too small, the room won’t feel cosy or inviting.

Sketch up the room style beforehand One of the easiest ways to assess whether a sofa, dining table or bed will suit the size of your room is to map it out with newspaper and lay it on the floor. This will give you a sense of how much floor space the piece will take up. Living with this template for a few days will also give you a definite feel for how it will be to live with the piece.

Avoid schemes of the same height & colours Avoid having all the furniture and furnishings in a room the same height, colour and style. Play to the furniture pieces’ unique qualities, such

are ideal. The coffee table should also be the right height for the sofa. You should be able to easily reach the coffee table from a seated position so you can rest a cup of tea or a glass of wine. If the room is your main television viewing space, then you’ll also need to factor in technology. The entertainment unit should feel balanced with the size of the TV, and it is better to pair a larger entertainment unit with a smaller sized TV. From there you want to make sure whether the sofa is the correct distance from the TV for viewing comfort. It should be about 2.5 times the screen width in distance away, and no more than 5 metres. The centre of the TV should be about 1 to 1.1 metres from the floor. Shine a light on focal points in a room When pendant lamps are hung too high or low,

Rachel Loewen © 2019 Houzz they can look completely out of place in a room. You need to consider the size and style of the pendant, the ceiling height, and the space in which they will be hung. Despite these variables, there are still a few hard-and-fast rules that can help when hanging pendants. For kitchen benches, hang lights around 70-80 centimetres above benchtops. This height allows the pendants to provide a useful light source for working, without intruding on the line of sight from the kitchen to the adjoining living or dining room. For your dining table, sit pendants at 75 centimetres above table height to create an intimate and cosy dining space. For entries and hallways where people will be walking beneath the pendant lights, the ideal hanging height should have space allowing about 240 centimetres from floor level.

Hang art at eye level Choosing artwork that is the wrong scale for a room is a common mistake, with most people erring on the small size. Checking to see whether a gallery will allow you to bring a piece home on approval is the best way around this. If you fall in a love with a piece that is too small for your room, have it re-framed with a larger mount. Another common mistake is to hang artwork too high on the wall. If a piece is hung too high it will have no connection to the furniture below it, and if it’s above eye level it can ruin the look of a room. Ideally, artwork should be hung so that the centre of the piece is at average eye level or about 150 centimetres from the ground. In a dining room, you might want to hang the pieces slightly lower to factor in the seated viewing height.

Marni Epstein-Mervis © 2018 Houzz Follow the 60-30-10 formula for colours To help create a perfectly balanced colour scheme, a timeless decorating principle shared by interior designers on Houzz is to follow the 60-30-10 formula. Your 60 per cent is the main colour for a room, which anchors a space and provides a backdrop for the other colours. In a living room this would be walls, sofas and rugs. Your 30 per cent is the secondary colour, which would encompass occasional chairs, bed linen, window furnishings and occasional furniture. It should support the main colour while being different enough to set it apart and give the room interest. The final 10 per cent is your accent colour. For a living room, this would include cushions, decorative accessories and artwork. For a bedroom, think throw pillows and artwork.

Don’t forget smaller object pieces can create big impact Keeping an eye on the proportion of decorative accessories is another important consideration. One large bowl on a dining table might be all you need in that space to create drama. Conversely, combining small objects with other similar objects can create just as much impact. A collection of ceramic pots makes one big statement, whereas a few pots scattered about will look disconnected and out of proportion. Lamps should not overshadow the table on which they are placed. A large lamp on a slender table, for example, would appear top-heavy. Too much variety of scale can cause visual chaos in a focused area, such as a bookshelf. Instead, group items of similar type and scale together, and line up like-sized books for a balanced look.

BEDROOM IDEAS

to Make the Most of Your Space

Ready to embrace your small bedroom? Read on for tips on how to maximize your small bedroom with design, decor, and layout inspiration. Keep the Layout Simple There isn’t a magic trick to the layout of the small bedroom. The designer also suggests placing the bed in the centre of the main wall, rather than pushing one side up against the adjacent wall. Having room to walk on either side is key, not only for room flow but also to give you space to make your bed.

and working on your laptop. If you happen to have some room, a small-scale coffee table makes this setup even more convincing.

Don’t Be Afraid to Go Dark… You’re not limited to whites or neutral colour palettes when it comes to the walls of a small bedroom. Embrace the size and moodiness of a small room and even play into it. Painting a room a charcoal grey or navy blue or olive green can be chic and sexy. Create the Illusion of Space Another one of our favourite small bedroom ideas is to create the illusion of space. Hanging drapery as close to the ceiling as possible is a design trick that actually works. It brings the eye up. While we’re at it, a good tip for picking curtains is to match the fabric to the wall colour. It’s modern and can be nice in a smaller space, because your eye won’t be distracted by contrasting colours.

Cut Out Clutter All the square footage in the world won’t make a difference if it’s crowded with stuff. Another trick that won’t cost you any money is to keep your room clean. You can still accessorize like you would a larger room, but keeping out the unnecessary clutter is a no-brainer. Choose Mounted Lights Instead of Table Lamps and Floor Lamps Just say no to table lamps and floor lamps. We know, this is turning into a Marie Kondo expedition, but those light fixtures are only going to take up the tiny bit of floor space you do have. Instead, choose a space-saving sconce to hang on the wall above your bed, ideally one with a swinging arm that can be adjusted to direct light downward (for reading) or into the rest of the room (for dance parties, et cetera). If you're partial to pendant lights, one of those would work too. Talk to the bed specialists at Beds R Us Whangārei today to find out how to orchestrate all elements of your bedroom for the perfect night's sleep. Showroom is now located at the corner of Porowini Ave and Tarewa Road. Open 7 days.

BATHROOM UPGRADES

WORTH THE SPLASH OUT HOUZZ AUSTRALIA & NEW ZEALAND (HOUZZ.CO.NZ)

If you’re redoing your bathroom, chances are your budget isn’t endless and you need to think carefully about where to spend and where to save. Leading home renovation and design platform Houzz has compiled a list of the top nine bathroom features worth splashing out on as recommended by professionals in the Houzz community. So which upgrades are worth the extra expense and will make a significant difference to the look and functionality of the space? Here’s what you need to know.

Antonia Schmitz © 2016 Houzz

A skylight Recent ‘Houzz & Home’ studies report 21% of renovating New Zealand homeowners installed a skylight when updating their home. Adding a skylight is one of the most effective upgrades you can make to a bathroom. Having natural light streaming in from overhead creates a serene, spa-like atmosphere. It also means you can do away with having a window, which gives you more scope with shower placement. There are many options available, from solar-powered and electrically operable skylights to ones with tinted glass in various sizes and finishes. What you choose will depend on your roof type and budget. For a new build, plan the skylight early so it’s factored into the roof shape and orientation. If you’re renovating, you’ll need a builder to assess for obstructions in the roof space before you can commit. Also be aware that having constant sun streaming into a bathroom can make it uncomfortably hot, depending on the room’s size and orientation. If this is the case in your

bathroom, be sure to invest in some motorised blinds to cut the glare. Integrated power points If you plan on using or charging any electrical devices in the bathroom, professionals on Houzz say to consider installing power points inside cabinets or drawers to avoid benchtop clutter and messy, dangling power cords. Power docks aren’t just for custom vanities – you’ll find them in some off-the-shelf vanities too. Just be sure to tell your electrician early on that you want power points integrated into your vanity or drawers so he or she can plan for them. A mirror cabinet Upgrading from a regular mirror to a mirrored cabinet will help keep your benchtop clear; it’s the perfect spot to house all those small creams, tubes and bottles at a convenient eye level. Mirrored cabinets do not need to be expensive and can either be partially recessed into the wall or surface-mounted. Just be aware that your choice of installation will affect your lighting options around the mirror. Head to the Houzz directory to find a cabinet expert in your local area to help with your bathroom storage needs. Exhaust fan Problems with air circulation will bring down even the loveliest of bathrooms. Ensure that you specify an exhaust fan within the design

to remove excess moisture and odours, and help prohibit the formation of mould in your bathroom. Make sure the exhaust is positioned above the shower, which is the source of most moisture in your bathroom. If your layout does not allow for this, position the exhaust elsewhere in the room and choose a model with more power. If you’re concerned about noise, check the labelling and choose an exhaust fan with a lower decibel rating. Underfloor heating Stepping onto a warm bathroom floor is a joy on those cold winter mornings, and recent Houzz findings show 22% of renovating New Zealanders’ purchased heating solutions to warm up their homes. Installing underfloor heating requires coils or pipes to be placed beneath the sub-floor of your bathroom, so you would generally need to plan this during the pre-building phase with a professional. The specialist will also guide you

on what appropriate underfloor floor system works best with your bathroom’s orientation.

A shower niche Bathroom designers on Houzz say dispense with the shower shelf and opt for a niche instead – it provides a neat, practical spot to store shampoos and soap, and it won’t encroach on your standing space in the shower. Plus, a niche creates a far more sophisticated and streamlined look.

Drawer storage According to recent Houzz research, over the last three years, 66% of New Zealand homeowners improved their bathrooms with the purchase of storage organisations systems. Upgrading your vanity from a style with doors to one with drawers is worth the extra outlay as it gives you far more functional storage. Drawers are also easier to clean as you don’t have to reach awkwardly into the back of cupboards.

A stone or solid-surface bath A bathtub utterly adds hotel-like charm to any bathroom, and professionals on Houzz suggest opting for more tactility and a better-quality finish such as stone or solid surface materials.

Custom joinery Custom joinery is probably a favourite upgrade for many interior designers on Houzz as it adds so much to a bathroom. Often people will start off thinking they will buy something off the shelf. However, you can never achieve the perfect fit, look and functionality this way. Spending a little more on custom joinery can achieve an outcome that is completely tailored to your bathroom and your individual needs. For custom joinery, planning for space allowances needs to be done right at the beginning of your discussions with a professional.

Handy home hacks

for people with pets LAURA HEYNIKE, ONEROOF

With our furry friends on par with the population of New Zealand, it’s clear to see we are a country of pet lovers.

W

hen we come across new build designs some of our focus is drawn to the family pet and how to best accommodate for them in

the design. From new build to existing home, there are a few hacks that might make a difference to your fur baby’s happiness and the integrity of your home at the same time. When buying a rug make sure you buy a short haired or woven thread. Better yet there are some incredible indoor/outdoor rugs that you can wash down. Stay away from those shaggy spaghetti rugs, pet fur loves adding to a long pile which can lead to hypoallergenic issues in your home. This will also be a deterrent for clawing cats. Dogs love being part of the pack so it’s no wonder they love sprawling themselves in the lounge next to the family.

An inexpensive rug that you replace every couple of years will help protect your carpet which you would only want to refresh every 10 years. Better yet, opt for a scratch resistant laminate flooring. Hardwood, while is luxurious does scratch and dent easily. When it comes to furnishings, vinyl is a manmade thread-based fibre. So if a cat pulls a thread back through, it will be unrepairable. Where as genuine leather can be healed and refurbished. Alternatively, we would usually specify hypoallergenic fabric or a stain resistant fabric like Crypton that is very dense that makes

it difficult to become a scratching pole while helping the health of your home! Thinking about space for your pets is a funny thought, but super important. Think twice when upgrading your sofa to make sure there is enough room for your dog bed or pet station with varied sizes to accommodate for. On the same notion, you could consider their habits of going in and outside and provisioning for a wash station in the laundry to wash them off before they come into the main house. If you don’t want to have a typical dog bed in your lounge to ruin your decor, I quite often have specified a “sacrifice ottoman” that works in with your interior but is purely for your furry friend to adore.

For over 15 years we’ve been proudly building Kiwi homes for Kiwis using all the best stuff from right here in good ol’ NZ. Over the last 15 years the Kiwi dream has come a long way since the elusive quarter acre. That’s why we’re proud to still be able to provide a Kiwi solution for your first home, second home, a home where you need a bit more home, or even your home away from home. We offer a range of plans from 60 to 250 square metres. These can be built straight from the plans, or we can use them as inspiration to create your own Kiwi dream.

With interior painting, a semi gloss or satin is a lot easier to wipe down. They will run up and down the corridor flicking their tail like no tomorrow and can guarantee they will leave a smudge line at a certain height all the way down the hall. Avoid textured wallpaper as marks can be difficult to spot and clean off. Lastly when you are styling your home, have a think about placement of objects. Pets are curious and love snooping around every nook and cranny. I once put an indoor plant on the TV entertainment unit for a client, stacked on some gorgeous books. Let’s just say the plant didn’t last long with his cat deciding to play its paw at flicking dirt out of the pot!

WINDOW FURNISHINGS & CHILD SAFETY

Two children have died recently from blind-cord accidents. The children were accidentally strangled after becoming entangled in the cords.

BY TRACEY HARVEY, FRAZERHURST

Here at Frazerhurst we take our responsibility to community very seriously so when we recently read an article about window furnishings being responsible for harm to children, we paid attention.

R

esearch indicates most blind-cord accidents happen in bedrooms and involve children between 16 and 36 months. Fatalities in other countries have led to the introduction of mandatory standards for window blinds. EU standards now require blinds to be designed so they are "inherently safe". This includes ensuring cords or chains don't form hazardous loops that could strangle a child. Here there is no such standard. It made for sobering reading and got us thinking how we can do better with our own products. Weathermaster® have addressed child safety issues on many of their products with a ‘childsafe logo’ on relevant products that meet the standard. Defined as the following: “Childsafe means that the operation system featured has no looped cords in which small children could become entangled and injured.” This means the products identified as ‘Childsafe’ have specific safety devices, such as child-safe tensioner devices for control chains. Have internal cords or automation, enhancing child safety. When it comes to Roman Blinds it is impossible to eliminate the operating cords on the back so we are now attaching swing tags with a ‘childsafe’ warning. Call into Frazerhurst, 146 Lower Dent St, to discuss your Child Safety choices.

Here are some things to consider for your own home: If you have window blinds in your home, you can minimise the risk of harm to young children by doing the following: •

Tying the cords out of reach. The mandatory Australian standard requires that cleat hooks used to secure cords are placed 1.6m above the floor.

Moving away any furniture children might climb on to reach the blinds. Never put a cot, bed or chair near a window where a child can reach a cord.

If you're buying new blinds, look for products that don't contain cords (for example, wand, springoperated or motorised blinds) or that have concealed cords such as Weathermaster® Whisper blinds.

Kitchen do-ups: How to stay sane ONEROOF.CO.NZ

Expert tips on how to create a ‘fantastic’ new kitchen. Thinking of updating your kitchen but trying to avoid upturning your life? Experts Pauline Stockwell, a Taupo-based designer, Katherine McDonald, an interior designer of Mt Maunganui and Tracy Murphy and ChelseyMathieson of kitchen design company Vekart Ltd share advice on what - and whatnot to do - to make the experience as smooth as possible. First, they say, rethink the timeline. While each knows a kitchen makeover is a super idea, don’t expect it to happen at supersonic speed. Settinga realistic time frame to get the job done is the first step towards success. The general rule of thumb is to allow two months of lead in time for the planning and then add six to eight weeks from the final orderingof the kitchen to allow for manufacturing. Time for making amendments

Fireplace, anyplace. With Escea gas fireplaces there’s no need to compromise on design. Flexible flue technology allows you to put the fire wherever you want. The only limit is your imagination.

is also advised as is finding the right placement for appliances - and choosing them. Second, get inspired. A kitchen renovation often starts with a selection of inspirational images. So, start by doing your homework, refer to magazines, Pinterest, the habitat by Resene website and home shows. “Rather than getting confused by all the choice and bogged down by the detail, employ an expert in kitchen design and colour consultancy,” Stockwell advises. “They are well equipped to put together a fantastic kitchen plan from your wish list, incorporating a selection of materials and finishes.” Spatial relationships need taking into account too. The list is long but not having a dishwasher hard in a corner as it will restrict access to adjacent drawers or ensuring fridge doors can open past 90 degrees for access to shelves and vege bins and not having a dishwasher and oven opening opposite each other as they will block a walkway are just some.

KITCHEN DESIGNER TOP TIPS: •

• •

• • McDonald says it’s wise to start by assessing how many people will be using the kitchen, and which areas will be busiest. Murphy recommends renovating in summer because during the work you can barbecue - and the hand-wash sink in the laundry can make double-duty as a dish washing station. Paint is an easy impact point to change – it’s the most cost effective and quickest way to freshen up and transform a space. Stockwell advises speaking to the experts at Resene for advice on what can be painted, how to prepare the surface, and which paint best suits the situation – and they can recommend painters.

Black and white kitchens accented by plants is one look that, when done well, will remain classic for many years. Resene Bokara Grey, Resene Nero, the deep grey of Resene Fuscous Grey and the warmly dark and mysterious Resene Element are popular options. A stark black such as Resene Noir combined with a warm white such as Resene Thorndon Cream is a classic combo for a traditional home, but also works well in a contemporary one. Mathieson says glass splashbacks provide an opportunity to introduce painted colour behind the glass while Stockwell loves green as a kitchen accent colour – her favourite being the “wistful and pastoral” Resene Paddock.

Murphy says sculleries offer the opportunity for a splash of colour while “painted walls with open shelving are a nice alternative to full cabinetry.” Some kitchens are still in good condition and just require a bit of titivation while if you’re happy with the existing layout or working to a tight budget, a lick of paint can be transformational. The Resene AquaLAQ range, for example, provides a tough finish that’s ideal for kitchen cabinetry while Resene Lustacryl semi-gloss or Resene Enamacryl gloss can be used for quick DIY updates.

• •

Establish expectations and be upfront with your contractors about time, budget and quality. Remove all items from your cabinets and set up a temporary kitchen space if required. It’s worthwhile having fully marked up plans with your plumbing and electrical notes to save you being asked a lot of questions – and to make things clear to the tradespeople. Allow time for, and cost, the breakdown and removal of your existing kitchen. This includes the plumber, electrician and builder. Good lighting is essential for not only creating atmosphere, but chopping, cooking and prepping. Consider whether your floor needs to be replaced. Have everything signed off and sorted before the project starts to avoid making changes while the project is underway, as failing to do so from the get go can have serious time and cost ramifications later on down the road. Don’t show all your friends what you are doing to save getting too many people’s opinions and to avoid confusion. Be prepared for plenty of noise and disruption. Check out the decorating inspiration gallery for kitchen project ideas from other kiwi homeowners and visit your local Resene ColorShop for help choosing your paints, colours and wallpaper.
