Sotheysatthekidsdowntotellthemdad wassickandneededtreatment

“Thekidsareactuallyreallyresilientsotook itwell,”recallsDarlene.

HehadsurgeryinSeptembertoremovethree quartersofhisliverandhisgallbladder,before beginningchemoforthenextsixmonths.

“Thekidscouldseethathelookedrealsick andthen,inbetweentreatments,he’dstartto comerightandgotoworkagain.”

Astheystoodbeforetheirfamilyand friendsinabeautifulOnerahigarden thatsunnydayin2000they,like mostyoungloved-upnewlyweds, assumedthey’dnurseone-anotherinoldage. Butnowintheirforties,it’stakingacommunity tohelpraisethe$93,000neededtokeepJames aliveafterhewasdiagnosedwitharareand aggressivecancer.

AffectionatelyknownasJimmybyhismany mates,Darlene,alsorenownforherchipper disposition,saysherhappy-go-luckyhusband hascharacteristicallytakenthepastyearin hisConversestride.Butit’sbeenaharrowing yearforthefamilyoffivewho,untilJune2021, livedatypicallife;James,now47,wasrunning hisHomegrownJuicedistributioncompany, Darlene,also47,aReikipractitionerand mentor,andtheirkids,Xavier15,Georgia,13, andNate,9,werebusywithschool,sportsand hobbies,whenlifethrewacurveball.

TheynoticedJameshadbegunturning ayellowshadeandtestseventually revealedtheextremelyrareandaggressive Cholangiocarcinoma(bileductcancer).

“We’dnever,everheardofit,”saysDarlene. “Wedidn’tevenreallyknowwhatthebileduct was.”

Abileductisatubethatcarriesbile,a digestivefluid,connectingtheliver,gallbladder andsmallintestine.Locatedintheforkof theduct,thecancerwassmallenoughthatit wasn’tinthearteriesandwasoperable.InNew Zealand,around185arediagnosedayear.

However,thecouplewereleft“completely mystified”astohowhegotit

JamesfinishedchemoattheendofMarch andthefollowingmonth,hisscanshowedthat hewasintheall-clear.Twomonthsofcancerfreelivingensued.

“Itfeltlike,‘Phew,gotthroughthat,thank God,nowlet’stryandbuildyourimmune systembackupandbuildyourstrengthback up’.Jameshadstartedworkingpart-timeatMy Ride-ajobhe’dalwayswantedtodo.Heloved it,itwasafreshstart.”

Buttheirnewleaseonlifewasshort-lived.

James’sstomachhadstartedtoswellso theywentstraighttoED,wheretheyremained until10.30pmwiththeeventualverdictthatthe cancerwasbackbutthistimetotheperennial wallofhisabdomen,whichisinoperable.

“Itwashorrific,”Darlenerecalls.“We definitelydidn’texpectitbutyouknowyou’re introublewhenthedoctorofferstomakeyoua cupoftea.Wejustwentintoahazeforthenext threeweeks.”

“Kidsdon’treallyunderstandsoIthinkthey justlooktoseehowmumanddadarecoping,” explainsDarlene,throughtears.“Ouroldest boyaskslotsofquestionsandGeorgiaandNate justwantlotsofcuddles.”

Theprognosiswasthree-fourmonthsor 12monthswithpalliativechemotherapy, whichJamesbeganimmediatelyatthelocal JimCarneyCancerTreatmentCentre.After

discussionswiththeironcologist,theydecided trialimmunotherapyeverythreeweeks alongsidethefortnightlychemotherapy. However,unlikechemotherapy,thisisnot fundedinNewZealand.

Immunotherapyisatreatmentadministeredintravenously–aimedathelping one’sownimmunesystemfightcancerby cognisingandattackingcancercells.

“Ouronlyhopeisimmunotherapy,”explains Darlene,addingthatitwasdecided“Keytruda” wasthebestoption.

Ayear’s-worthofimmunotherapytreatment willcost$93,000withthefirstfoursessions–at $9,100each-crucialtofindoutifitisworking. Jameshascompletedtworoundsandresults eexpectedearlyOctoberonitssuccess.

Thoughitistoosoontoknow,Darlenesays physicalchangeshavesofarindicatedthathe respondingwell,withhisstomachsettlingto normalandhisweightlossof15kgplateauing.

WhiletheyaredrawingdowntheirKiwisaver fundsandtryingtoaccessJames’lifeinsurance, aGivealittlepagehasalreadyclockedupover $20,000bygenerousdonorsandfamilyand friendshaveralliedaroundorganisingthelikes ofaquiznight,garagesaleandawellnessevent (September3).

Luckily,thecouplehadsoldtheirbusiness earlierthisyear,whichJames’sfriendRob hadsteppeduptorunduringhisfirstchemo tment

e’venoticeditthistimethatwe’refree responsibilitiesofrunningthebusiness. imewehadthebusinessdistracting wit’sthefactwe’vegottopayforthe tmentthat’sdistractingus.Butwehave communitysupportinvolvedandare luckyandblessedtohavetherightpeople oundus.”

anwhile,thekidsdidn’tsignupforsports aras,afterlastyear,itallfelttoohard, Darlene,whostilldoestheoddmassage erregularclients,whichsheisfinding apeuticherself.However,theyhavebeen epinglifesimpleandspendinglotsoffamily goingtotheparkandbeach.

“Nothingtooexcitingbutsometimesthe simplethingsinlifeisallyouneed.”

When Jamesand Darlene Pearks pledgedtheir wedding vows forin sickness andin health,they neverexpected to be carryingthemout quite so soon.

Thecouplewhometas16-year-old WhangāreiBoys’andGirls’High studentshavealwaysbeenthebestof friends.

“Ithinkit’sdefinitelybroughtuscloser. We’vealwaysbeenreallyclosebutit’sbeena blessinginawaybecausenowwe’respending moretimetogether.Weworkedtogetherwith thebusinessbutitwasn’tqualitytime.I’d accompanyhimonroadtripsinthetruckso we’dgoontruckdates.

“Jameshatesmetellingthisbut,technically ourfirstdatewasatthehospitalashisdadwas havinganoperationsoheaskedmeifIwanted tocome.Andnowallmyhusbanddoesistake metothehospital,”Darlenelaughs.

“We’relikeateam.We’vealwaysleteach otherdoourownthingsandwe’reprettyeasy going.Iguessyou’dsaywehadanon-eventful marriageuntilthis.”

It’swhentheyattendchemo,theyrealise justhowyoungtheyare.

“Themajorityofthepeopletherearealot older.AguywasgettingchemonexttoJames theotherdayandhewas92.ButJamesstrikes upconversationswitheveryone,ofcourse.He’s well-lovedandrememberedupthere.Himand hisConverseshoesarequitewell-known.

“Ishouldmentionthatmyhusbandhasan addictiontoConverseshoes.Hewearsthem everydayandhas15pairsatthemoment.We hadaConversepartyforhimrecentlyandgot allthematestogetherandweallhadtowear Converseshoes.”

AswellashisConverse,Jameshaswornhis trademarksmileandretainedhiscalmattitude throughout.

“Theoncologistsayshispositiveattitude playsabigpart.Hejustdoeswhatneeds doing.He’sbeenamazingwithtakingonallthe differentsuggestions.Heisoftenreallytired andhasasorestomachbuthefollowsaneating planand,aswellasfollowingthetreatment, makessurewhat’sgoingintohisbodyis healthy.

“Ifitgoeswell,we’llendupwithnomoney butwe’llendupwithJames.”

Covidcame, butCovid didnot conquer! Despiteatwo-yearhiatus, the2022Bernina Northland Fashion Awards sold out, andthe show was unanimously describedasthe best ever!

TimRobinson,trusteewiththeTaiTokerauArtisan FashionTrust,wasblownaway.“Wealwaysknew thatthisyearwasessentiallyanewbeginning,first withCovid,andthenfloodingintheregioninthe daysleadinguptoshowday,wesurehadourchallenges!We wereblessedwithanamazingteam,whodeliveredthemost enthrallingshowwe’veseenyet.”

With60entriesacrosseightcategories,thequalityof garmentswasnext-level,butthebigdifferencetothis year’seventwasCreativeDirectorDanBlack’smagic.The choreographythatDanproducedliftedthemodelsand garmentstoanewlevelofstagepresence,andcombinedwith soundandlighting,deliveredavisualfeastfortheaudience.

Thisyear’sshowwasfurtherenhancedwiththejudging panelofDameDeniseL'Estrange-Corbet(ChiefJudge), HinurewaTeHauandReganMoyes,allwithdeepexperience inthefashionanddesignworld.DameDenisepresentedthe 2022NorthlandDesigneroftheYearawardtooverallwinner, SandraGuest,withherentry,“She'sAMeanSewandSew”, modelledbyAliceWetherall.Sandratakeshomeaprizeofan AirThreadoverlocker,valuedat$2,000,proudlysuppliedby BerninaNorthland.Northland’sTopModelWinnerwasKamrin, wearingdesignerDorisPilcher’sgarment“IslandTails”.Kamrin wonaprizeofamodellingportfolioshootfromSarahMarshall Photography.SolSpakeroundedouttheoverallwinners asfirst-timeentrantwinner,withtheentry“Soli”,winninga BernettesewingmachinesuppliedbyBerninaNorthland.

Ultimatelythesuccessoftheeventcamedowntothe professionaleventplanningandmanagement.

“ThisyearwasdifferentinhavingCollectiveConceptsas oureventmanagers,”saysTimRobinson.“Inthisdayandage,

youcan’trunaneventofthisnaturewithamateurs.Kateandher teamtookcareofallthedetails,meaningthat,comeshowday, everythingranlikeclockwork.Thismeantthatwecouldbringon boardgeneroussponsorsandfundingagencies,withoutwhomthe eventsimplywouldnotexist.Itishumblingthatoursponsorsand funderscanseethegreatopportunitythattheeventoffersyoung people,providingapathwaytoacareer,inwhatisamulti-billiondollarindustryworldwide.”

ThenowlateandlocallegendhimselfJim, andSirEdwerepartofthe“FamousFive”,the groupoffiveNewZealanderswhodrovetothe SouthPoleinanarduousjourneyonmodified MasseyFergusontractors,makingthemthe firsttoreachitoverlandinvehicles.Theparty setoutforthePoleafterlayingfoodandfuel depotsfortheBritishcrossingpartyofthe CommonwealthTrans-AntarcticExpedition, beforecontinuinginanadventurous“dashto thepole”.

Jim’sworkonconvertingthetractors tousecaterpillartrackswascreditedwith gettingtheteamtothePoleandhebecame aprolificinventorwhopatentednumerous inventionsusedinthedairyandmarine industries,withawell-knownprojectbeing hisWhangāreiHeads-based“windmill yacht”-anambitiousprojectthatreplaced thetraditionalsailsofacatamaranwitha propeller-poweredwindturbine.

Aftertheirimpromptureunion,andtree planting,theTrustplacedatotaraseat,made byGeoff,alongwithasisterseatatWhangārei HeadsSchool,bythepohutukawatree.A secondtreewasplantedbytheproceeding patronSirPaulReeves.However,BHCT’sJenny Lawrencesays,whiletheseatisthereforallto enjoy,unfortunately,thisincludedlocalfreeroamingcattlegrazinginthepaddocks.

Partially-fundedthroughtheRayWhite Communityfund,agivealittlecampaignwas alsoestablishedwiththeaimofraising$2,000 torefurbishthehistoriclandmarkforfuture generationstoenjoy,whichincludedanengraved plaque.Theseatisnowlocated30mfromits originalsiteandprotectedwithinafenced-off areaattheUrquhartBayentrancetothereserve.

Jennysaysthoseinattendanceofthe unveilingenjoyedamomentontheseatand, tothedelightofthechildren,thestockcameto haveanosypeek.

TheHickoryDickorypoemmimicsanoldclocktickingand wasusedtoteachthebasicsoftellingtime,entertainkids, andencouragethemtosingalong.Inthefullversionthereare versesthatgofromoneo’clockrightuptotwelveo’clock.

So,whatkindofclockaretheysingingabout?Grandfather clock?Wallclock?Andwhatwasamousedoingontheclock? Didsomeoneleaveatreatforitthere,likeapieceofcheese? Allverypuzzling,buttherearesomeinterestingfactsabout clocksthatmayhelptoshedlightontheoriginsoftherhyme.

Theword“clock”derivesfromthemedievalLatinwordfor 'bell'—clocca.Thefirstclockmechanismswerechurchtower clocks,whichsoundedbellstocallthecommunitytopray. Thelasttwoandahalfyearshavebeen quitetheridewithlockdowns,masks andmandates.Butnotasgoodas therideyouwouldhavehadwith 1920sAmericanboot-leggerWilliamMcCoyin hisPackardtwinsixOperaCoupe,duringone ofhisrunstobringwhiskeyfromCanadainto thethenprohibitionUSA.Hewasthesecond ownerofthePackardtwinsixOperaCoupe, nowbasedatthePackardMotorMuseum.Bill McCoyashewasknown–hencethesaying‘the realMcCoy’–pulledoutthebackseatofthis carandreplaceditwithalargecoppertank. Ihavenowbeenlivinginthisbeautiful countryforthelasteightyearsandI’m alwayslookingforbetterfishingspotswhere Icantargetmysharkfishingfromtheshore. Mybackgroundisbasedonfishingcompetitively fromtheshorebackinSouthAfricaandthis iswheresharkfishingraiseditsheadwithme duetothepointssystem.It,however,turned intoanobsessionandInowlovetaggingand releasingthesebeautifulcreatures.Ihave teamedupwithScottandSueTindaleandhave alreadymanagedtoreceivesomevaluableinfo supportingthemovementofthesefish.

Oneofmyfirstholidayswasspenton myboattargetingsnapperandkingiesupin ParengarengaHarbour.Whatstoodoutonthat tripwastheamountofsharksthatactually comeandvisittheharbouraseveryliveyI putdownwasbeinggobbledupbyyoung bronzewhalersharks.Onthattrip,wealso managedtolandagreyshark(dusky,grey ridgeback)whichIneverexpectedtofindin

foroutrunningthecustomsagents. Whichhedid anumberoftimes.

However,afteronehighspeed chase,thecarendedupinaditchandwas seizedfor‘evidence’.Ifyouwouldliketohear moreoftheOperaCoupe’sstoryandmany

Afterthisverysuccessfultrip,Istarted lookingatallfootageofsharkfishinginour harboursanddecidedtospendsometimeand seeifIcanhookanyofthesebeasts.Thisled metoanumberoftripsbacktotheFarNorth fromSpiritsBaydowntotheRangiputaharbour. Asyouallwillknow,noteverytripisasuccess, butthebigthingistolearnfromeverytripand makesureyoustartfindingoutthepatternof thesefishand,likemostfish,theydohavea patternandonceyouhavedecodedthis,your ratioofsuccesstofailurevastlyincreases.

Withoutgivingawayhard-earnedsecrets, thefollowingisofimportance:tides,bait,tackle (moreforthesuccessoflandingthebigones thantheamountofbites),timeoftheday,water clarity,winddirectionandwatertemperature.

Ihavefoundthebitetimecanbepretty shortsoyouneedtofindoutatthespotyour fishingwhatthetidesareandonceyougetthe biteitshouldbeprettymuchatthesametide/ timethenextday.Aswithmostofourother species,theylikewatermovement.Deadwater leadstonobites.

Baitsarecrucialasdifferentsharkswill enjoydifferentbaitsso,targetingaspecific shark,ithelpstoknowwhattheirmainfood sourceis.Oftenyouwillstandinagroupof anglersandonlyoneguywillbegettingallthe bites-firstthingtolookatishisbait.

Timeofthedayisnotalwaysonthetop ofmylistbut,forsure,sharkliketheearly morningorearlyeveningasthatistheir feedingtimes.Thingscanslowinthemiddleof thedaybutIhavehadtheoddoccasionwhere itcangoballistic.Nolineinthewatermeans nobites.

Waterclaritycanmeandifferentthingsfor differentsharksbutdoesn’talwaysmakea difference.

Aseveryoneknows,thereisalwaysa certainwinddirectionthat’spoisonforany formoffishing.It’salwaysbesttoasklocals whohavefishedtheareaformanyyears becausethatcomeswithexperience.

Watertemperatureisalsoanindicationof whattypeofsharkyouaretargeting.Itmust alsobesaidthatanysuddendroporincrease intempcanputthesharksoffandonlyonce usedtothewater,thentheywillcomebackon thefeedagain.
