Dear Friends and Visitors,

Welcome to the Traverse City Horse Shows at the spectacular Flintfields Horse Park! I’m thrilled to extend a warm invitation to you for our ninth season showcasing premier equestrian sport. This year, we are proud to present 13 weeks of equestrian excellence. At TCHS we offer elite competitions for seasoned equestrian enthusiasts and a dramatic new experience for spectators new to the sport. For both audiences, the unique charm and beauty of Northern Michigan shines through everything we do.

At the heart of our show is a celebration of equestrian prowess. Each week the thrilling skill and athleticism of Olympic-level athletes and their extraordinary horse is on full display. From the fierce competition of Major League Show Jumping to the remarkable talent displayed at the FEI North American Youth Championships, each event is a testament to the dedication and spirit of these extraordinary athletes. And, of course, we culminate our season with the prestigious American Gold Cup, a cherished equestrian tradition since 1970. We are proud to host this distinguished event for the third straight year.

But the Traverse City Horse Shows offer much more than exhilarating show jumping. It is a sensory feast where you can savor delicious meals from a variety of local food trucks, enjoy local brews and craft cocktails at our bar, and Vendor Row is brimming with equestrian apparel, unique gifts, and more for those looking to shop.

Our event is designed with families in mind, ensuring an unforgettable day for your little ones. Watch their faces light up as they discover the pint-sized jump zone, engage in lively lawn games, and enjoy a variety of family activities. We invite you to join us for an incredible day filled with excitement and inspiration. Best of all, most of our events offer free admission starting on Wednesdays.

Additionally, we support a local non-profit organization each week through our Charity Ticket Program. As part of our commitment to giving back, we donate 100% of general admission ticket proceeds from our Grand Prix events to these deserving and impactful organizations.

Thank you for spending a day—or many—with us this summer. We hope you will leave with cherished memories and a newfound appreciation for the incredible world of equestrian sport.

Warm regards,

NEW TO EQUESTRIAN SPORT?

THE SPECTATOR’S GUIDE

Hunters

It’s all about the horse! Hunter rounds are entirely judged on how the horse moves, jumps, and carries itself on course. Even their attitude in the ring ca n influence their score. It’s the rider’s job to ensure the horse looks and performs as picture-perfect as possible within the hunter divisions. While there is no cut-and-clear method of scoring like dressage, it can still be broken down into categories. A score in the 90’s is an impressive round. These scores are great, meaning the horse put in an above-average round. A score in the 80’s is an average, solid round. However, a score in the 70’s is typically considered mediocre, and usually is due to a fault somewhere in the course.

For hunters, a fault can be as major as a fence refusal, or as minor as a lazy lead change. Not all horses are judged

equally. One horse’s best round of its career could score worse than an average round of another horse.

Equitation

In equitation, scoring is all about the rider. Riders must demonstrate effective and thoughtful riding in these divisions. Top placings are awarded to the rounds that seem the most effortless and smooth. Judges watch the rider’s position, decision making, quietness, and their individual style of riding. While focus is on the rider themselves, the rider’s horse can influence their score. Similar to hunters, there is no standardized method of scoring.

Jumpers

Show jumping is much simpler than hunters and equitation. With no subjective scoring, show

jumping is a race against the clock with the goal of having a clear round, which means the rider has no faults or penalties. Faults can include fallen rails, refusals or going over the time allowed.

SHOW JUMPING 101

While Hunters, Jumpers and Equitation are all featured at Traverse City Horse Shows, the highest level of equestrian sport featured is Grand Prix Show Jumping.

Grand Prix Show Jumping

Show jumping is one of three Olympic Equestrian sports, and is the only Olympic sport where men and women compete on equal ground. Grand Prix Show jumping is the highest level of show jumping competition, and also the most challenging. Grand Prix’s consist of two rounds. During the first, all

competitors work to jump the entire course of obstacles that could reach up to 1.60m (or 5.25 feet), while keeping all the rails up and completing the course within the time allowed. Should this be accomplished, riders will move onto the second round, called the “jump off.” The fastest horseand-rider duo to complete the jump-off with the least amount of faults wins!

Show Jumping Faults & Penalties

Penalties, or “faults” in show jumping can consist of knocking down a rail, stepping a foot in a water jump, or a first refusal.

• Knocking a rail: 4 faults

• Foot in water: 4 faults

• Refusing a jump: 4 faults

• Second refusal: elimination

• Riders falls off: elimination

• Exceeds Time Allowed (TA): faults per every second over

A-Z HORSE SPORT TERMS

Amateur Riders

Amateur riders are those who participate in shows but do not receive payment for their participation.

Base of the Jump

If you picture a small rectangle just before the fence, this would be the base. Riding up to the base of the jump is a commonly used phrase from trainers to encourage students to maintain rhythm all the way up to the fence and avoid longer distance take offs.

Chip / Chip In

Chipping in is when the horse and rider pair do not get a good distance to a fence and, as a result, the horse adds an awkward half stride just before take-off.

Clear Round

A clear round in show jumping is when the horse and rider

pair make it through the round without taking a rail and without adding any time faults.

Combination

More than one jump in a row which must be ridden in quick succession, separated by only one or two strides. The combination is considered a single obstacle and if the horse stops, runs or refuses any part of it, the entire combination must be re-jumped.

Course Walk

The course walk is done prior to show jumping classes. This is where riders and their trainers will walk the course on foot to measure strides between fences and plan for their route when they ride it later.

Cross Rail

The Cross Rail or Cross-Pole obstacle is not commonly used in equestrian shows and consists

of two poles crossed with one end of each pole being on the ground and on jump standards so that the center is lower than the sides. This obstacle is mainly used for training to help teach the rider how to properly aim the horse jump in the center of the obstacle.

Deep Stride

Getting a deep stride is a similar idea to chipping in that you are jumping from close to the base of the jump. The difference is, when done intentionally, a horse can take a deep stride without adding that awkward half stride.

Fault

A fault is a 4-point penalty given when a horse knocks a rail down or has a refusal.

Flying Change

A flying change is when a horse changes from one lead to the

other at the canter (e.g., right lead to left). The horse will swap the leading leg on hind end and front to the other lead.

Green

A term used to describe young horses performing within the Hunters Class, generally in the first or second year of their jumping career.

In and Out

A two jump combination with each separated by one or two strides.

Jump Cup

A jump cup refers to the piece of equipment that holds the rails of a fence in pace. Think of it as a shelf for jump rails. Some are deep, making the rail sturdier and some are flatter, making the rail easier to knock down.

16
Summer 2023
• Traverse City Horse Shows

Jump-Off

The jump-off is a secondary round after the initial jumper round in which the focus is getting the horse around without taking rails and with the fastest time possible.

Junior Riders

A Junior rider refers to a Jumper or Hunter rider who is under the age of 18 of varied experience and expertise.

Landing

Landing in jumping refers to the downward motion of the horse as they first touch the ground with their front legs on the landing side of the fence.

Liverpool

The Liverpool jump consists of a ditch or large tray of water under a vertical or oxer to which the rider and horse are required to jump and clear.

Long Stride

Long stride references when the horse and rider take off further away from the base of the jump. This can be done accidentally or on purpose depending on the situation.

Off Course

Each jumper course has a course map with the order in which the jumps are supposed to be approached. Off course refers to when the rider jumps fences out of order, thereby resulting in disqualification.

Oxer

An Oxer entails two verticals close together to widen the jump/spread.

Pace

Pace refers to horses’ rhythm in their gaits and the rate at which they are moving throughout a course. Maintaining pace is an important factor of the rider’s job.

Pole (“Rail”)

A pole is the cylindrical piece of wood that goes across to make a jump. It’s also referred to as a rail.

Professional Riders

Professional riders are experienced and usually paid to ride, perform and/or jump in events.

Round

A round refers to each “trip” around a full jumping course.

Rub

A rub is when a horse taps a rail with their leg as they go over a fence. This may result in the rail coming down, giving the horse and rider pair a fault, or the rail may stay up in which case the pair would not be penalized.

Runout

A runout is a type of refusal where instead of coming to a stop in line with the fence, the horse ducks out and goes around the fence.

Two-Point

Two-point refers to a rider position where the rider has two points of their body touching the saddle (each leg), also referred to as forward seat. It is a forward position that brings the rider mostly out of the saddle to allow the horse to jump more safely.

Safety Stirrup

A safety stirrup is a type of stirrup (the pedals that attach to the stirrup leathers and rider puts their feet into) that has a portion that will give away and allow the rider’s foot to come loose should they ever fall off with their foot still in the stirrup.

Standard

Standards are the vertical stands with jump cups that the poles lay across. Types of standards may vary but the traditional ones are a heavy squared off wooden post with 4 wooden feet to allow for stability.

Stride

Stride refers to the motion of a horse’s individual gaits. Each gait has a different number of beats per stride with 4 beats at the walk, 2 beats at the trot, 3 beats at the canter and 4 at the gallop.

Time Fault

If you take more than the set time allowed to complete your jumping round, you incur a time fault for each extra second.

Triple Bar

The Triple Bar obstacle is categorized by a spread fence that uses three elements of graduating heights.

Vertical/Upright

A vertical jump, otherwise known as an upright jump, is an obstacle consisting of poles or planks placed directly above one another with no spread, or width. This forces a horse to make a steep arc in their effort to jump this style of fence.

TRAVERSE CITY HORSE SHOWS A Journey of Growth and Excellence

As the shows enter their 9th season, the natural beauty and charm of the region continue to captivate riders, spectators, and enthusiasts from around the world. The Traverse City Horse Show (TCHS) has an inspiring history, and its rapid growth has had a lasting impact on the equestrian community. Under the management of Morrissey Management since 2015, this once-regional competition has transformed into North America’s premier summer equestrian destination. Now entering its 9th season, TCHS continues to reach new heights. This summer, TCHS offers over $7 million in prize money, a significant increase from $1.5 million in 2019. With its expanding popularity, TCHS has experienced a surge in attendance and participation. The venue provides approximately 2,000

stalls, accommodating 1,700 to 1,800 horses each week of the now 13-week show— up from four weeks at the beginning. In recent years, TCHS has attracted a significant number of participants, making it a vibrant gathering place for equestrian enthusiasts and professionals seeking a destination to compete and enjoy quality time with family and friends.

As the horse shows grow, the quality of the competition continues to jump out of the ring. TCHS attracts top-level athletes and elite horses every week, making it a preferred choice for barns and riders.

In 2023, TCHS will host two Major League Show Jumping competitions and the North American Youth Championships, further solidifying its reputation as a premier event. Additionally, TCHS will proud -

ly host the American Gold Cup for the third consecutive year, highlighting its standing in the equestrian world. These prestigious events selecting TCHS showcase its exceptional facilities, including the Turtle Creek Casino & Hotel International Ring and permanent FEI stalls, as well as ongoing investments made at Flintfields Horse Park.

The success of the Horse Show sends positive ripples across Northern Michigan each year. A 2021 economic impact study found a direct annual economic impact of $120 million in tourism dollars alone. With the success, the shows have also attracted equestrian families choosing to make Northern Michigan home. The growth of TCHS has fostered the establishment of an equestrian community, attracting long-term invest -

ments throughout the region. Notably, the development of Grand Prix North, located across the street from Flintfields Horse Park, which will further enhance the area’s appeal as a picturesque equestrian neighborhood.

The history of TCHS reflects its transformative journey from a regional competition to a prestigious equestrian event that hosts elite athletes and provides spectators with an unforgettable experience. With its perfect blend of worldclass competition and idyllic surroundings, the Traverse City Horse Shows offer an unparalleled experience for all who attend while creating significant economic benefits to the region. With its continued success, TCHS will play a vital role in building a vibrant and thriving equestrian community in Northern Michigan.

Pearl's Magical Day at the Horse Shows

Six-year-old Pearl loved horses more than anything. She dreamed of meeting a horse one day. One morning, her parents surprised her with tickets to the Traverse City Horse Shows. Pearl was so excited!

At Flintfields Horse Park, Pearl saw horses, people, and colorful flags everywhere. Then, a rider on a big horse crossed their path. Pearl felt scared but amazed by the horse's size and strength.

Pearl's family found the "Future Riders' Playground" for children to pretend to be horses. Emily, a kind rider, helped Pearl feel brave. Pearl had fun pretending to be a strong horse, and her parents cheered her on.

They explored the event and saw delicious food trucks. Pearl's favorite vendors waved and said, "Hi, Pearl!" They enjoyed snacks while watching the fantastic competition. Pearl learned about different jumps and clapped for the horses.

At the end of the day, Emily introduced Pearl to her horse, Mira Starbuck Chaser. Pearl fed Mira a carrot and felt her heart race with happiness She couldn't wait for more adventures at the horse shows.

"Can we come back tomorrow?" Pearl asked her parents, her eyes filled with hope.

More than Just a Festival

The economic and cultural impact of Traverse City Horse Shows

Horse Shows by the Bay, the event that gave rise to the Great Lakes Equestrian Festival and Traverse City Horse Shows, began as a modest affair. Regional riders and their horses began competing in 2007, and the event grew to a national circuit event that ran for four weeks each summer.

Today, on the same grounds at Flintfields Horse Park, Traverse City Horse Shows (TCHS) welcomes an international cast of competitors, friends and family members, and spectators. In 2022, TCHS ran for 12 weeks, had participants from 22 countries, and stabled more than 1,700 horses. This year is expected

to be even bigger, especially since TCHC is offering an added week of competition.

“We feel incredibly fortunate to have such a fantastic team that works tirelessly to make TCHS a top summer destination for equestrians,” says Matt Morrisey, Traverse City Horse Shows managing partner. “The community’s support and involvement truly sets us apart. Northern Michigan is a one-of-a-kind place.”

Investment and Impact

All that growth reaches far beyond the ring, with an estimated annual economic impact of $120 million—or nearly $750 estimated spending per day per person—in northern Michigan, according

• Traverse City Horse Shows

to a study from Sports Management Research Institute. That sizeable chunk of change includes lodging, travel, shopping, dining, and entertainment. Grand Traverse Resort & Casinos (GTRC), whose properties include nearby Turtle Creek Casino and Grand Traverse Resort and Spa, has seen firsthand the benefits of being situated close to the action at Flintfields.

“Traverse City Horse Shows has grown every year to become one of our most important local event partnerships,” says Steve Timmer, chief marketing officer for GTRC. “[They have] built up a loyal following within the worldwide equestrian community, and they provide great marketing

outreach for our brands.”

Timmer says GTRC amenities like golf, spa services, and dining at Bourbons 72 (located inside Turtle Creek) are popular among TCHS attendees. But the partnership goes far deeper than just logos inside the ring; TCHS has also helped to put a spotlight on the heritage of the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians, which owns the GTRC properties. Each summer, attendees will discover cultural celebrations and exhibitions, plus photographic installations throughout Flintfields showcasing the tribe’s history.

“Their audience supports their sponsors, and we’ve received a great response not

42
Summer 2023

only for our Grand Traverse Resort & Casino properties but for the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians as well,” Timmer adds.

It Takes a Village

Although Traverse City is considered the “big city” Up North with plenty of attractions for visitors, it isn’t the only place that sees increased activity during horse show season. Elk Rapids, a charming village just 15 minutes north of Flintfields, also gets a summertime economic boost from TCHS attendees.

“Summer season in Elk Rapids has always brought a flourish of visitors [and] tourists, but over the past several years, we’ve seen a steady increase in visitors to our region,” says Laura Savoie, membership manager for the Elk Rapids Chamber of Commerce.

She says that while it’s easiest to spot an equestrian competitor by their attire, it’s clear that TCHS attendees are coming to the village with or without their boots to enjoy restaurants, retailers, art

galleries, and recreation. (Not to mention the demand for real estate for second homes or longer-term rentals.)

One of the ringside sponsors and vendors at TCHS this year is Short’s Brewing Company, which is headquartered in Bellaire with a satellite location, Short’s Pull Barn, in Elk Rapids. They’ve seen firsthand the impact of the event on their business, which inspired them to work closely with TCHS for the 2023 season.

“A site visit last summer sealed the deal for this new partnership. The facility is absolutely beautiful, the event organizers are amazing, the horses are incredible, plus it draws a great audience for the entire summer—we are so lucky to have them in our backyard,” says Christa Brenner, marketing and brand director for Short’s.

Brenner says that Short’s is working on their beverage lineup for their summer outpost at TCHS, noting that the brewery’s non-alcoholic hop water, Thirst Mutilator, will certainly

be in the rotation. She adds that she’s looking forward to selling Short’s brews on-site at Flintfields and at the pub’s two brick-and-mortar locations.

“We will certainly see an increase in sales from the show itself, and we hope that all the local businesses in Elk Rapids see an increase in foot traffic over the summer,” Brenner says. “We’re in such a great location—instead of hiking into TC and fighting traffic, they can head up to Elk Rapids. … I think the laid-back atmosphere of our location is really appealing; we’re not fussy or fancy, plus we’ve got inside seating and a dog-friendly outdoor space. What’s not to love?”

A Dog and Pony Show

Speaking of dogs, local businesses aren’t the only beneficiaries of a busy season at Flintfields. Last year, TCHS introduced a new spectator ticket program that helped raise money for local nonprofits and charities. In 2022, the program raised $50,000 for 12 organizations.

One of those organizations is Cherryland Humane Society, which will be participating in the program again this year. In fact, the organization has been connected with TCHS for four years now, thanks to long-time supporters of the nonprofit Dudley and Barbara Smith and their daughter, Laura Matthies.

“The Smith family and all of the TCHS team are tremendous animal lovers, and it shows through their years of support and dedication to not only horses but all animals,” says Naomi Washburn, communications and marketing manager for the Humane Society.

She says that the impact of the partnership with TCHS has been “huge,” and not just in terms of dollars and cents.

“Being partnered for this event brings wide exposure and helps promote not only our mission, but also helps us do the most important thing: find the animals entrusted to us their forever homes,” Washburn says.

Event Director Morrissey Sees More Growth, Communities Connections Ahead

We caught up with Traverse City Horse Shows Event Director Matt Morrissey to hear his thoughts on Traverse City, the facility at Flintfields, and more. Q: This show has become so big and important to the region. But what do other areas of the sport around the world hear or know about Traverse City? Are we “on the map?”

Morrissey: Oh, absolutely. One of the big steps was adding the FEI divisions, which means riders earn international ranking points, so when they compete here it’s on the global stage. So people are definitely taking notice of the FEI but also the infrastructure improvements here. All of the footings have been redone; it’s all top-notch with drainage now. There used to be days with rain when we’d have to shut the rings down, and that never happens now. Every year we take on a few big infrastructure projects. This year we’ve added two new, permanent barns to house our FEI and Olympic horses. The year before we added some permanent buildings. So people always like seeing us putting investments back into the shows. I do think it was a surprise for a lot of people when they first came to realize what the surrounding areas were like. Before I had stepped foot here, when I thought of Michigan I had thought of Detroit. But here, you can bring a whole family; maybe one family member rides, but for the others there’s shopping, hiking, watersports…so many different things to make it into a family

vacation. It really makes this place a great destination.

Q: How did you first first hear about and visit the show here?

Morrissey: We first visited first in 2014, when we were asked to come in and do some shows. We had spent our summers [at a horse show] in Lake Placid, but once we arrived here we realized the area is so full of promise.

Q: Talk about the growth over the years at the horse shows.

Morrissey: It’s been impressive. Over the years we’ve expanded the number of competition rings, and really made it so people can come watch everyone from little kids on ponies to past Olympians competingjust about every week, with some weeks a number of them here. The food and beverage on-site has improved dramatically. In 2022, we incorporated our charity ticket program, where 100 percent of proceeds go towards a local charity partners. If people haven’t been here since maybe 2015, I think they will be very pleasantly surprised. And those core six July August weeks are as good as they can be, but we’ve added weeks in June and September and they are increasing in popularity. At this point it’s too early to know September numbers, but June numbers have doubled since just last year. And our biggest benefit is word of mouth.

Q: And the event has really come a long way in terms of connecting to the local community.

Morrissey: Right. We have a couple great employees in the community, between Audra [Jackson] and Gary [Howe], who just joined our team and has been able to help us connect the dots. We want to grow with the community and the charity ticket program is just a part of that commitment.

Q: So what else is new on-site this year?

Morrissey: Well certainly the most visible part is the new barns, but we also have an entirely new septic system. We’re also starting an equestrian community across the street, where people can buy 5-20 acre parcels and have their horses there with stalls, paddocks, and everything in a private setting. It will be a full farm community.

Q: Where you do see this event going in two or even five years?

Morrissey: I think it’s quickly becoming one of the top destinations of the summer, so I can easily see it as the top desti-

nation. We’ll continue to make improvements on an annual basis. Right now we have hunters, jumpers, and equitation, plus one week of dressage. And I think we could probably add weeks of dressage to basically introduce somewhat of a new discipline with the potential of adding other disciplines like western at some point.

Q: You spend much of your year here now. What are your personal thoughts about the Traverse City area?

Morrissey: I got up here in April and I’m here basically mid-April to the end of September nonstop. I’m now actually building my own home here, so I’m investing in the area. The weather for a horse show in the summer the weather is perfect. I personally enjoy the late nights with late sunsets so I can get in some late golf. in the evenings. I love the water and good food, and there’s a lot of it that up here! I hope everyone will give our event a try and come out and support your favorite charity this summer!

RIDERS TO WATCH

While you’re sitting ringside, keep an eye out for these seasoned veterans, Olympians, and rising stars in both the hunter and jumper rings. Cheer them on!

THE JUMPERS

Shane Sweetnam

Shane embarked his grand prix career at age 16. Originally from Dunmanway, County Cork in Ireland, he made the bold move to the United States to ride for American grand prix legend Margie Engle in 2004. He was eighth individually to help Ireland to team gold at the 2017 European Championships and competed in the 2018 World Equestrian Games where Ireland finished seventh. With grand prix victories to his name from across the work, Shane is the reigning champion of the American Gold Cup Grand Prix with the mount James Kann Cruz. Keep an eye on Shane as he defends his title while anchoring his Major League Show Jumping team, the Spy Coast Spies.

Among the impressive lineup of international athletes gracing Traverse City this season, Beat Mändli stands out as a prominent rider. Hailing from Switzerland, Beat has represented his country in the Olympics three times, earning a team silver medal at the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games. Beat will be hungry for a repeat in 2022 after winning last year’s Serra Traverse City Grand Prix during the Traverse City Spring Horse Shows. Beat is not only a rider himself, but coach to Katie Dinan, another name to watch for in Traverse City this season.

Margie Engle

Margie Engle, a true legend in the equestrian world, is no stranger to the winner’s circle at Traverse City Horse Shows. Hailing from Florida, Margie is a member of the U.S. Show Jumping Hall of Fame. She proudly represented her home country at the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games. She has won over 200 grand prix events and also rides on the Spy Coast Spies alongside her former student, Shane, as part of Major League Show Jumping that calls Traverse City home twice this summer. She’s not just a force in the competition ring, however, and can often be found at Turtle Creek Casino with a winning poker hand.

She may be one of the youngest riders in the ring, but it doesn’t stop her from dominating in the hunter ranks. Augusta Iwasaki, 19, is originally from California but attends Southern Methodist University in Dallas, TX, as a fierce member of their equestrian team. Augusta’s exceptional skills and talent shine in both the hunter and jumper rings at Traverse City throughout the summer months. Her impressive victory in the World Champion Hunter Rider Spectacular in 2022 solidifies her position as a rising star in the equestrian world.

THE JUMPERS

Jacob Pope, 28, is one up-and-coming rider who seamlessly skips between the jumper (think speed skating) and hunter (think figure skating) rings without hesitation. Pulling double duty in the hunter and jumper rings as both a coach and professional rider for Team Rakowsky, based out of Wellington, FL. He was notably recognized for his outstanding sportsmanship and horsemanship as the recipient of the Iris McNeil Trophy at the National Horse Show. He is also an honors graduate from Rollins College, and during his time as a young rider captured a gold medal at the North American Youth Championships, which will return to Flintfields Horse Park this year.

In 2022, Cathleen Driscoll had a breakout summer at Traverse City horse Shows by winning three events in one week. The now 30-year-old from Maryland started riding at age five after falling in love with the sport while watching her older siblings compete at a local level. Largely self-taught throughout her teenage years, Cathleen was discovered at the 2018 Emerging Athletes Program development event and now competes at an international level for Plain Bay Farm out of Wellington, FL.
