Love at First Sight
WRITTEN BY Y NGUYENMy very first encounter ever with Key Club was during Raider Rush when I was just an incoming freshman. I remember walking through the hallways with tons of booths stacking up alongside each other and hearing from my friend that there was a club going around giving out ice cream. As a freshman, I was much more excited to get some ice cream, but I was greeted with something more when I first saw Key Club. I remember seeing the past Key Club members laughing and hanging out alongside each other, and students making jokes here and there and teasing one another. I was surprised because compared to the other booths that I visited, the members seemed to be having more fun and were very nice and social with the new students. I saw the community that was built within the club and how respectful the members were treating one another. From there, I knew that I wanted to join the club, the interactions the members showed in the booth made me realize I wanted to be a part of something like that.
I admit that my initial experience with Key Club during the pandemic wasn’t the best, but I still saw glimpses of how the officers treated each other and the members well. The meetings that we have were always fun and goofy. I still remember how Key Club’s former 20202021 president went the extra mile to drive over to my house and collect the fee so that money issues won’t be an obstacle for me to join the club. Truly, I fell in love with Key Club because of how amazing the members were and how the club
makes it feel like everyone is heard and included in the events. I am always amazed to see the passion and love that the officers members were treating one another. From there, I knew that I wanted to join the club
have for the club, and it makes me so happy to be in a club that is so easy for me to meet new people every time and start friendships. I truly feel that since I've joined I’ve been able to make new connections and meet amazing people. I love to be in a community that isn’t so strict and listens to the needs of its members,
and those aspects of Key Club are the reasons why I’ve never regretted joining. I can’t wait for what else Key Club has in store for my last year here at North Garland High. .
Becoming Better Officer
WRITTEN BY YEN DOa
Walking into school as a freshman, I didn’t expect to see myself waking up at 3 in the morning for volunteering events. When I first heard about marathons, the thought of having to be at the train station before the sun even rose was scary, but after attending several, they became my favorite type of event. I’m able to connect with more people and create fond memories during these eight hours-long events, and my favorite marathon was the Skyline Marathon back in April. When I was heading to the Dart that early morning, I honestly didn’t expect this marathon to be much fun as very few of my friends were going. However, it was my first event as an officer, and I wanted to make the best of it. Fortunately, I was put in a water station with my friends, and it was located next to a lake and hill where we could see a stunning view of the city skyline. The first hour there was a little unpleasant due to the cold wind from the lake while setting up cardboard trash cans and empty paper cups that would fly away.
Despite the chilly weather, our chests bubbled with warm laughter from how silly we looked chasing after paper and cardboard.
As hours passed, we finished setting up our station and had water cups ready to give the runners. A wave of tired runners quickly approached us when the marathon started, and we were busily passing out water to exhausted runners for the next hour and a half. My friends and I also cheered on the runners as they passed, so they were motivated to keep going. This is one of my favorite parts of marathons because
I get to see the gratifying looks on people’s faces when they receive muchneeded water and words of encouragement. After all the starting runners my friends while genuinely helping people is truly the fun part of volunteering.
passed our water station, we took a break and ran up the hill to explore the skyline view. Eventually, we were back to passing out water to runners circling back to the finish line. My group had to stay until the last runner passed before we could head back to the main area, so my friends and
I used this time to tell each other stories and made light conversations to fill the silence. When we finally got back, everyone else had already packed up, and we were ready to go home.
I came into the Skyline Marathon with low expectations, but it ended up being my favorite event.
