LETTER from the publisher I deleted my Facebook page years ago. Jaw dropping, I know. But after having a Facebook page for over 5 years, I was over it. I eventually found myself having emotions from a monitor screen that I honestly shouldn’t have. I often felt hurt, envious or irritated after scrolling through my “feed”. Though Facebook is an amazing tool for businesses and a huge asset for long distant friends and families to stay connected – I needed to walk away. At that time in my life I needed to focus on the positive and embrace the “real” relationships in my life. I wanted to sit down and drink a latte with my bestie, not just “like” her selfie she posted in the Starbuck’s drive thru. I wanted to drive to Seattle and stay with my family and take in a ball game, not just comment on their picture of them going to the game. Don’t get me wrong... I totally miss seeing all the photos my 438 “friends” post daily, but hey, I get to see all of my real friend’s faces a lot more since I walked away.

Miles Torres’s story on social media (page 8) is a must read. It touches on this topic amazingly. We live in a “screen world”... but it’s time to put our smart phones, tablets and ipads down and pick up a book, a tennis racket, a board game and get back to the basics and embrace today!

#WhatsToLIKE? How Smart Phones, Facebook and SnapChat
Are Fighting Harder For Your Family Than You Are. Resentment, anger, jealousy, distrust. Those have been sighted in a recent study as the strongest feelings among men and women when they finish using social media sites like Facebook. The same feelings were equally strong in women after leaving weddings and reunions. Yet, we keep going back. Social media, smart phones and services like SnapChat, the super-anonymous chat system that destroys each message you send out (more on this later), have created arenas where users hope to find small, daily emotional victories that provide validation of their importance and relevance in social settings. Recognition, acceptance, love, friends, and “community” are the primary, small victories we seek that are delivered through validation markers such as “Likes”. This is key to understanding the basic business framework behind social media and how carefully these platforms are breaking into our homes, families, and minds by egging us on that we can have a better life if we spend more time online growing close - away from each other. Flashback to the Facebook movie, “The Social Network” when the character Mark Zuckerberg has his “ah-ha!” moment. It was pretty simple. Let people know your “status”. This revealed Zuckerbergs genius and why Facebook is so dominant. He realized that people didn’t want to be seen as single, nor did they care if you knew they were attached. What he saw was that people wanted recognition - a theme prevalent throughout social media platforms where commenting, liking and sharing has been given real, personal clout, defining loyalties, friendships, and enemies. Take for example the innocuous birthday. Kids love their birthday parties. Their little friends come over and they eat and yell and pin tails on all sorts of things, and then we ship them home all sugared up and hyper. We know they had a good time because they complain about
feeling sick and can’t remember a thing if asked. What’s not to love? It’s simple, face-to-face interaction that’s been a proven formula for success for thousands of years, likely. According to the book “Envy on Facebook: A Hidden Threat to Users’ Life Satisfaction?”, Facebook interaction in birthday-form was the second most common cause of envy as users could compare how many birthday greetings they received to those of their Facebook friends and how many “likes” or comments were made on photos and postings. For many this led to sadness, feelings of low self worth and rejection. Amazing? Only if you consider that these feelings did not exist until the birthday boy made the effort to login and then count, line by line, the amount of greetings and birthday wishes they received. Or more accurately, those they did not receive. I know many adults who feel flat-out insulted by a lack of public recognition, and I know teens who are, simply, emotionally unequipped to manage the feelings they experience during this discovery. It’s confusing because perceived rejection still feels like rejection - and rejection exists largely in our perceptions as it is. The question of reality begins to blur. Vacation photos are the most common cause of both envy and resentment. They seem to epitomize one’s social status and further divide the “haves” from the “have nots”. This affects women more than men. According to a Humboldt University study, women look at vacation photos as “family happiness” and are more likely to make direct comparisons to their own body appearance, families and spouses. Men generally focus on posting more self-promotion thoughts, accomplishments, or grander statements about their identity in sports, politics or business. Receiving assurance about accomplishments ranks much higher for men than feelings about their families or looks. Which, of course, goes nowhere in explaining the “selfie”. Let me know when this starts to hurt. Has social media made a mess of us? Kind of. “Addiction” is a word thrown around liberally when it comes to social northidahowellness.com

#WhatsToLIKE? media usage, and more than one marriage has struggled or worse due to poor use of social technology. And then there’s teens. Yep.
Generation FB And Family 10 screens. That’s how many screens fight for my wife’s and my attention on a daily basis. Quick rundown: 3 laptops, 3 smart phones, 3 tablets and 1 LCD tv (also smart). We have two kids who share 1 of the laptops where they cruise PBSkids for spelling and math games, as well as t.v. time on a daily basis. The kids share a tablet to read books and play Angry Birds if the time is right. They are young and manageable and yes, we do manage and monitor their computer time very carefully, providing strict rules and timelines. Even with seemingly innocent sites like PBSkids their impressionable minds are forming habits dependant on “screen time” vs. facetime. We want them to favor the later. Actual cost: $4770. 10 Screens. Seriously. This is one of the many truths for Generation FB - an overwhelming amount of screen stimulation disguised as “meaningful” time with friends, family, strangers, businesses and a larger governing body of online policy makers. memories. How in the hell did we make it this far as a species without SnapChat cheering us on? What’s the next technological step in removing the human element from relationships? When does it end? Some facts: • Over 40% of Americans prefer to chat or text vs. face-to-face or phone conversations. • Every day Facebook users spend 10.5 billion minutes a day on the site. That’s 19,963 Years a day. (that does not include mobile users). • Almost a third of users have missed important events in their life because they were trying to post a message to social media. • 1 in 50 people married last year in the U.S. met on social media sites. • 90% of social media users say that opposite-sex relationships on social media create distrust and cause the spouse to reconsider their personal, online policies. • According to Divorce-Online, 20% of all divorce filings specifically mention Facebook as one of the reasons for ending the marriage. • 85 percent of women are annoyed by their friends on Facebook.
• Links about sex are shared 90 percent more than any other link on Facebook. • One-third of Facebook’s 18-34 aged female demographic check Facebook when they first wake up, even before going to the bathroom. • Finally - 11 million young Facebook users have abandoned the site since 2011. • Although most of these stats are fun, anecdotal chunks of information, the last fact may be a welcome trend that leans pro-family, pro-relationship and pro-privacy. • Also, “LOL”ing is really not the same as actually “laughing out loud” (with people). Your ribs never hurt while “LOL”ing, even if you do it all night long down in the basement. Which is a completely different issue. Making It Work Screen-Free Many Americans long for more family time but it would seem that social media is introducing an awkward, social retardation inhibiting many from forming a solid, substantive circles of peers. So here are some ideas to chew on that may bring that real-life spark back to your most valued relationships of family, friends, and crushes. Spend time WITH your kids online - Online time with parents is associated with an increased, more intimate connection between parents and adolescents. That connection helped mediate the relationship including greater positive social behavior and lower aggression. Teens
were also less likely to demonstrate anti-social behavior when parents took hands-on interest. While too much social networking may be bad for most kids and teens, cooperative, family social networking has proven to increase personal, healthy, happy family connections. (source - Brigham Young University) Drop “Call of Duty” and bust out a board game - Call me “old school” but nothing is better for healthy social and robust interaction than a couple of hours having it out in Monopoly or Risk. The face time is invaluable and its a good time to talk about important family or friendship issues that have been pressing on you. Board games are also a great way to melt the heart of your latest crush. Write A Letter With “Your Hand” (gasp) - In 1775 the United States started the “Postal Service” where you could mail a “letter” by way of a “horse”. Today this is still possible and it’s considered a dying art form. Don’t send a card. Write a letter. A fully hand-written page of how you feel, what you’ve been up to, and maybe spray some Axe on it to impress (LOL). Letters are thoughtful and yours will not soon be forgotten. And probably most important - Put That Phone Down. Guilty. Your kids will thank you. That’s all I’m going to say. Go forth and socialize as proud humans, capable of initiating an in-person relationship from scratch, looking someone in the eye and appreciating closeness the way we were designed to do. P.S. You can find me on Facebook :)
Lyme Disease: The Silent Epidemic Written by M. Anthony Smith, DC
The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) recently
reported that there are ten times more Lyme disease cases than they had previously estimated. They now state that 300,000 Americans are being infected every year! This startling statistic now classifies Lyme disease as the fastest growing infectious disease in the country. It has now been identified in all 50 states, and Idaho is no exception. This debilitating disease is usually caused by the nymph form of a deer tick which can be found wherever deer roam. This infection-laden bug is not much larger than the period at the end of this sentence, and it’s bite is painless. That explains why more than 50% of Lyme patients never recall being bitten. There are a number of reasons why Lyme has become an epidemic. In the early 1900s, there were about 500,000 deer in this country. Today there are over 20 million. Additionally, an estimated 50 to 80 percent of western gray squirrels are infected -- along with some fleas, mosquitos, and North Pacific sea birds. Lyme bacteria has even been found in the human placenta and semen. Finally, Lyme disease can be hard to diagnose, and difficult to effectively treat -- especially when it becomes chronic. Lyme ticks can inject you with numerous different pathogens. The primary infection is caused by a stealthy bacteria called Borrelia Burgdorferi. Other common Lyme infections include Babesia, Bartonella, and Anaplasma. Borrelia can spread to any organ in the body -- including the brain. The infected organs can then cause a wide variety of physical and mental symptoms. The most common are: chronic fatigue; muscle, joint or nerve pain; sleep disturbances; cognitive and psychological problems; stomach or intestinal pain; and headaches. Chronic Lyme disease can eventually ruin a person’s health -- and even be fatal. Standard medical testing will usually not reveal any significant findings. If a doctor does suspect Lyme disease, he or she may order a Western Blot and/or ELISA blood test. However, studies have shown that these tests are only about 50 percent accurate.
In the absence of any positive tests, many Lyme patients are misdiagnosed with fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome, autoimmune disease, or Multiple Sclerosis (Lyme and MS can have similar brain lesions and symptoms). It is also not unusual for Lyme sufferers – especially children -- to be told that their symptoms are psychosomatic. Unfortunately, the average chronic Lyme patient will suffer for years, seeing numerous doctors and spending tens of thousands of dollars on fruitless testing and treatment.
Lyme ticks are very active from April through October. Here is how you can avoid becoming part of the Lyme epidemic: Avoid tick-infested areas such as leaf litter under trees, and long grasses and brush on the edge of paths Wear light-colored long pants and long sleeves so you can see any ticks Tuck shirt into pants and pants into socks Do a thorough tick check upon returning inside Remove any tick with a fine tweezers as close to the skin as possible, pulling it straight out without crushing it If you notice a red, bulls-eye type of ras, seek medical help immediately. A short course of antibiotics can often cure an acute Lyme infection – but not a chronic one. Dr. Smith specializes in the evaluation and treatment of chronic Lyme disease with his all-natural LymeStop technique. He has treated chronic Lyme patients from most of the United States and also numerous other countries. To contact Dr Smith, call 208.765.8061. northidahowellness.com

Causes of Golf Injuries Written by Brent Hirschi, DC
I
used to laugh when someone started talking about golf injuries. How could anyone get hurt when they are playing a sport that involves driving a golf cart, hitting a small ball into a hole, all the while avoiding any contact with the other players? In fact, you can’t even talk while the other player is trying to hit his/her ball. I’m now better educated about golf and the stresses it places on the bodies of those who play it. The average golfer typically plays 37 rounds of golf per year and spends many more days at the driving range. The dynamic movement patterns combined with the high velocity in which they are performed creates a prime environment for injury. About 80 percent of golf injuries result from overuse stresses and strains. The most common complaints are low back, elbow, wrist, and shoulder pain. Lack of flexibility, poor conditioning, excessive play or practice, poor swing mechanics, ground impact forces, or intermittent play lead to excessive stress on joints and muscles. The result becomes what we know as muscle compensation. Factors such as stress, trauma, or overuse can cause neurological connections to become altered. This creates a reaction in the body, similar to that of loose battery cables in your car. When the brain sends a message for a muscle to contract, the muscle does not respond immediately, creating increased demand on other muscles to perform the desired movement. Over time, these compensation patterns create altered alignments in the joint, leading to joint instability and abnormal wear on the joint surfaces. The end result is pain, disfunction, and can ultimately lead to osteoarthritis. If identified and properly addressed, this condition does not occur. In recent years, a new process has evolved for correcting muscular imbalances in the body. It has dramatically improved functional capabilities in people of all age groups, providing a pain free lifestyle along with elevating sports performance and career longevity in several professional athletes, including golfers. This process is a biomechanically-based system called Clinical Kinesiology, sometimes referred to as muscle activation. Muscle activation provides the ability for the body to perform the way it was designed to function. Just like with a dead battery, the muscles must be jumpstarted and the cables must be tightened before the muscle will respond properly. In simplistic terms, through Muscle Activation, muscles that have improper neurological connections are identified, then jumpstarted, creating the ability for the muscles to stabilize the joints and reduce the joint stresses that lead to arthritic conditions. That is when the body becomes efficient and the related aches and pains are deterred. I’ve come to realize that injuries do occur in golf, but with proper precautions can be avoided or lessoned. Stretching, conditioning, and utilizing the professionals in the area will ensure you get the most out of your game. We have a wonderful golf community in Northern Idaho. Get out and enjoy it! K Salon
in Spokane Valley
Most people have moments that shaped their life forever, which set them on a journey that took them places they never knew they would go. For me, it was when I looked down at the clumps of hair that wove through my fingers - my hair was falling out. In that moment, my heart sank, and a wave a fear rolled over me, as 10 years in hairdressing I knew this was an affliction not easily alleviated. By the time I met my naturopath, I had 83 symptoms in all, among them were pre-diabetes, severe weakness and exhaustion, malnutrition and weight loss. I was 24 years old and felt as though I was falling apart. This began a journey that redefined everything I knew: my health, beauty, and life; a journey that would take me through stacks of books, hours of interviews, and a series of experts; a journey that inspired a vision, out of which K Salon was born. The journey’s reward was my health gained, and an accumulation of knowledge that would help not only myself, but those around me; knowledge that opened my eyes to surprisingly simple insights that carried profound implications. As I sifted through hundreds of studies about 16

common carcinogenic chemicals, one thing became clear: thousands of toxic chemicals, many of which have been banned in other countries, lurked in almost every beauty product on the market. To my surprise, some of the most toxic concoctions were actually found in baby products. In this an even more startling realization emerged, that even conventional “organic” alternatives were compromised by corporate conglomerates. The subtle sellouts that happened overnight made trust a momentary and always shifting enterprise; even reputable high-end organic product lines were susceptible to toxic chemical formulations that I was now so tirelessly trying to abandon. Through this struggle, I continued to amass the knowledge that would fuel a growing passion, to share this information with anyone in need, helping friends, family members and acquaintances, raising their awareness to the reality of what it meant to be truly organic and how to live a health-giving lifestyle. Later on, I embraced the reality, that there needed to be a place that facilitated this information. It seemed almost serendipitous, that the toxic industry I had worked in for so long was now the perfect place for such an undertaking. What I envisioned was not a salon of gossip and weekend news, but a salon that would be a resource for clients – peeling back the layers of misinformation, to expose a deeper truth of what it meant to really live well. In these few short years, I’ve had the fortunate experience to have reached many people. The biggest reward is helping others to face their health struggles and to encourage the healthy remain so. Everyday, K Salon does this; never compromising beauty for health, or health for beauty.

Grown-Up Delinquent? Or Adult ADHD? A Holistic Approach Can Help Kids with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder
(ADHD) bounce off the walls, are emotionally reactive, continually forget their homework, underperform in school, are more likely to abuse drugs and be delinquents, and create challenges for teachers and parents. Adults with ADHD internalize their wall-bouncing until they blow up, continually forget their assignments, quit or get fired from their jobs up to three times more often than others, have high substance abuse rates and twice the likelihood of getting divorced and arrested, and create challenges for employers and partners. ADHD, which persists into adulthood for as many as 5% of the population (8-10 million), is deeply rooted in the brain’s wiring. The ADHD brain struggles with “executive function,” the critical capacity to remember and organize things, events, and tasks, maintain attention, and execute complex activities from beginning to end. Put simply, adults with ADHD tend to be impulsive, to lose and forget just about anything from keys to weddings, and to have trouble starting and finishing anything that has more than one step. Indeed, two unhappy hallmarks of adult ADHD are procrastination (especially avoidance of complex 18
mar | apr 2014
tasks) and ongoing failure to deliver on projects and other obligations. Less than 10% of ADHD adults are diagnosed and getting help. ADHD adults are often deeply depressed by chronic underachievement, unstable relationships, and day-to-day difficulties. They often find themselves accused of social and moral irresponsibility. Partners often express serious stress and resentment about carrying a disproportionate amount of responsibility and being pressed into surrogate parent or caretaker roles. Help begins with a clinical assessment and a visit to the doctor to determine if medication is appropriate. The right medication can be extremely helpful to some adults with ADHD, but a healthy lifestyle and a strategic “management” approach are essential. The Standard American Diet (the aptly acronymic “SAD”), high in fast and processed foods, red meat, trans-fats, high-fat dairy products, and sugar, is basically bad for us in every way and it also appears to aggravate ADHD at any age. Some specific “suspects” include gluten, corn, dairy products, eggs, nuts, and additives. A holistic health practitioner can help with an elimination diet and nutritional improvements, including
increased consumption of helpful omega-3 fatty acids and micronutrients. Regular exercise redirects excess energy and improves mood, cognitive processing (including attention), and impulse control. Adequate sleep, often a special challenge for people with ADHD, can significantly moderate ADHD symptoms. Finally, ADHD specialists can provide a raft of helpful coping and adaptation strategies that help with motivation, scheduling, remembering, and task achievement. Training and discipline in mindfulness practices, including meditation and a daily discipline of intentional focus on the present moment are hugely helpful in managing impulses, promoting socially appropriate behavior, and improving decision-making and self-organization. Adults with ADHD have some big challenges but like all other human beings each has their special gifts and abilities. Finding a way to organize one’s life around strengths and getting help with challenges is the key. Adults with ADHD are not stupid or basically lazy - they can make major changes that create a better future for themselves and their families. This work is not easy, but it can change everything. Steve Gajewski is trained as a mental health counselor, lawyer, and career coach. He brings over 25 years of experience in environmental health, community outreach and conflict resolution to his counseling practice in CDA.

Are you suffering from
low thyroid function? Written by Dr. Pamela Langenderfer
The thyroid, also known as your master gland of energy and metabolism, is a small gland shaped like a butterfly, located in the lower part of your neck. The function of a gland is to secrete hormones. It produces the master metabolism hormones that control every function in your body. Thyroid hormones interact with all your other hormones including insulin, cortisol, and sex hormones like estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone. The fact that these hormones are all tied together and in constant communication explains why an unhappy thyroid is associated with so many widespread symptoms and diseases. The thyroid gland produces two major thyroid hormones: T4 and T3. About 90 percent of the hormone produced by the gland is in the form of T4, the inactive form. Your liver converts this T4 into T3, the active form, with the help of an enzyme. Those two hormones, T3 and T4, are what control the metabolism of every cell in your body. However, their delicate balance can be disrupted by nutritional imbalances, toxins, allergens, infections, and stress. If your T3 is inadequate, either by insufficient production or not converting properly from T4, your whole system suffers. T3 is critically important because it sends messages to your cells to speed up your metabolism by burning fat. That is why T3 lowers cholesterol levels, regrows hair, and helps keep you lean. Thyroid problems have unfortunately become quite common. Lifestyle factors such as sugar, processed foods, stress, environmental toxins, and lack of exercise wreak havoc on the thyroid gland. Many people suffer from symptoms that are directly related to suboptimal thyroid function. If you go to your doctor with a thyroid-related issue, the conventional approach is to do a lab test called TSH. If your TSH is in what’s considered in the “normal” range, your doctor will likely say you’re fine — even if you’re not feeling well. In an effort to improve diagnosis of thyroid disease, in 2003 the American Association of Clinical 20
mar | apr 2014
triiodothyronine thyroid gland hormone molecule. triiodothyronine is a thyroid gland hormone that plays a role in energy metabolism regulation.
Endocrinologists (AACE) revised the “normal” TSH range as 0.3 to 3.04. The previous range was defined as 0.5 and 5.0. However most standard labs continue to use the 0.5 to 5.0 reference range thus leaving a large population of people with hypothyroidism untreated. Hypothyroidism simply means you have a sluggish or underactive thyroid, which is producing less than adequate amounts of thyroid hormone. Hypothyroidism is the most common thyroid disease people suffer from. The treatment is to give thyroid replacement medication such as synthroid, however many people still suffer from many hypothyroidism symptoms even though they are taking medication. The most common symptoms of low thyroid function are: 1. Severe fatigue/loss of energy: If you suffer from a thyroid issue, you may feel highly fatigued and sleep more than average, but even after the extra sleep you don’t feel rested or have any energy. 2. Weight gain/difficulty losing weight: When your thyroid slows down so does your metabolism. That’s why unusual and unexplained weight gain can be the first noticeable symptom. 3. Dry skin, brittle nails: New wrinkles, dry or cracked patches, and itchy rashes are signs of imbalance in your thyroid hormones. 4. Brittle hair, itchy scalp, hair loss: Your thyroid plays a role in your hair’s growing and resting cycle. Without proper thyroid functioning, your hair follicles stay in the “resting” phase rather than growing actively. In addition to brittle hair or hair loss, thyroid issues can also cause premature graying of the hair.
5. More sensitivity to cold and lower body temperature. Always feeling cold is a telltale sign of a problem with your thyroid, which greatly influence body temperature. 6. Diminished sex drive: Imbalances in your thyroid can affect your reproductive hormones, and lead to lower levels of desire. 7. Puffiness in face and extremities: Puffiness in the face, most often around the eyes, is a common thyroid symptom. 8. Infertility or frequent miscarriages: Many women don’t realize that good thyroid function is necessary for fertility, the ability to conceive and to maintain a pregnancy.
Other common hypothyroid symptoms include: joint and muscle pain, depression, hoarseness or feeling of lump in throat, elevated cholesterol, memory loss, fuzzy thinking, or “brain fog”. As one of the centers of your endocrine system, your thyroid influences how your other hormones are used. That’s why an underactive thyroid can influence so many functions in your body and lead to such a wide range of symptoms. Although millions of women are suffering from underactive thyroid, most don’t realize that the real causes of their thyroid problems also involve other hormone-producing glands. It’s no coincidence that low thyroid problems most often appear in women at menopause or with adrenal fatigue or other endocrine issues such asPMS and fibroids.
Low thyroid is also associated with diabetes, autoimmune disorders and low vitamin D levels. This is because your thyroid is at the center of your endocrine system, intimately connected to all your other hormonal centers. Just as the thyroid influences all of the above systems, it is also affected by hormonal changes in the body. For example, high levels of the stress hormone cortisol can inhibit both TSH (thyroid-stimulating hormone) and the thyroid hormone T3. This means that women who’ve been dealing with long-term stress are especially susceptible to hypothyroidism. Estrogen is a hormone that enhances thyroid function. If estrogen levels are low, thyroid releasing hormone (the hormone that stimulates TSH) also goes down. This is one big reason so many women in menopause and perimenopause end up with thyroid problems. The holistic approach to correcting low thyroid function is to provide support for the entire endocrine system right away and let your body correct itself. You can do this by changing your eating habits, taking a high-quality multivitamin, and by using herbal supplements. Dr. Pamela Langenderfer is a naturopathic physician and licensed acupuncturist. Pairing Wine
with (healthy) food When I was fresh out of college living in San Francisco, I didn’t know much about wine besides knowing that I enjoyed it. Let’s just say that Two Buck Chuck was a staple (afterall, we had graduated college and it was time to step up from the boxed wine). I couldn’t have begun to tell you about food and wine pairings except for what I thought were the basics - red with steak and white with fish or chicken. Since then, I’ve learned a lot… not only that wine can be a healthy part of the diet (it contains heart-healthy antioxidants), but that pairing wine and food isn’t so black and white. Sure, hearty steaks are a great match for big, heavily tannic red wines. The fat in the steak meets the sturdy tannins of the wine in the middle. It’s kind of like a boxing match with two heavy weights… except instead of fighting, they shake hands and compliment each other. “Hey, you’re pretty awesome.” “You’re not so bad yourself!” 26

What about the healthy staples, like tomatoes, vegetables and chicken? Pairing wine with those foods can be a bit of a mystery, not to mention a challenge. Just because you’re cooking a healthier meal at home doesn’t mean you need to give up on the wine altogether, though. Just follow my tips for pairing red and white wines with healthy foods and you’ll be cooking up good-for-you meals in no time! Tips for pairing food and wine: Match the weight of the food with the weight of the wine Hearty, heavier foods tend to pair well with wines that will stand up in body to the food and not be overpowered. Lighter, more delicate foods work well with lighter wines because neither is dominating the other. Examples: lamb and Syrah, white fish with Pinot Grigio, oaked Chardonnay with creamy pasta.
Find similar flavor profiles Enhance a certain flavor in the food by finding a similar flavor in a wine, or vice versa. Examples: Zinfandel with ripe, jammy fruit characteristics will pair well with grilled meat topped with a ripe, fruity sauce. Also, chicken with an herb and mushroom sauce would complement the mushroomy flavors of an earthy Pinot Noir. Think Regionally Wines from a certain region are usually made to go with the foods of that particular region, especially in “Old World” countries in Europe. Examples: Take Montepulciano d’Abruzzo wine from Italy’s Abruzzo region, which is a red that tends to have bright cherry flavors, tart acidity and earthy, herbaceous characteristics. The foods of that region, like simple tomato sauces, braised meats, mushrooms and olives, are all a safe bet. Get to know some staples for healthy foods Figuring out which wines go with healthy foods you like will make cooking with wine more fun! Here are some suggestions: • Sauvignon Blanc has citrusy, green, herbal notes that tend to work with many green veggies, like arugula, asparagus and even artichokes, especially with a lemon sauce or pesto. Gruner Veltliner and Vinho Verde would also work with these foods. • Champagne is light, bubbly and versatile enough to go with chicken, vegetables and soft, creamy cheeses when you need something rich. • Pinot Noir is a light-bodied red with low tannins and diverse flavors. It can have bright, spicy fruit or meaty, earthy characteristics. It’s a safe bet for chicken, pork, vegetables, and fish. Dry Rosé is another nice option for these foods. • Chianti, arguably Italy’s most well known red, contains a high amount of acid. It’s a great match for tomatoes and tomato sauces, which naturally contain a lot of acidity, so they balance each other out. Montepulciano d’Abruzzo, Sangiovese and Barolo are also good options. Eat well, drink smart, and enjoy! Cheers. Hana-Lee Sedgwick is an advertising executive by day and wine blogger and consultant by night. FITNESS
a guiding path to being physically fit.
Some Like It Hot. The room heats up as the humidity rises! Mats roll out and yogis begin to fill the room. They move through postures and transitions as the sweat builds and rolls off their bodies. From the beginner to the athlete to the seasoned yogi, many people swear by the power of yoga in a hot room. Written by Kim Sherwood
Devotees claim sweating improves detoxification,
heats up muscles to improve flexibility, dilates blood vessels to improve blood flow, aides in healing injuries, manages weight, and improves mood. Hot yoga has been known to have positive effects to such challenges as asthma, arthritis, muscular and joint injuries, sleep disorders, digestive disorders, and mood. However, please consult with a physician before participating in any form of hot yoga. Special precaution should be taken with sensitivities to the heat, heart problems, high blood pressure, and chronic ailments. Everyone should be aware of their health and maintain hydration before, during, and after class, as well as, use their common sense and not push too hard. Headache, dizziness, and mild nausea are all signs that you may not be tolerating the heat well and need to slow down, rest, and/or exit the room. and never break you down. Always practice smart and safe! Like all yoga, there is always a variety of styles and studios to choose from. Hot yoga began to build in popularity when Bikram came on the scene in the early 1970s. Bikram fills studios with eager yogis desiring his same 26 poses in a 105 degrees with 40% humidity. Today this style of hot yoga accounts for hundreds of studios across the United States including Yarrow in Spokane. Bikram made way for other styles of hot yoga by promoting its benefits and growing the community of yogis craving the heat. Other styles that follow a set series of poses in a heat controlled environment have recently developed including Moksha, Sumits, and Corepower. Moksha began in 2004 in Canada and has spread into the US as Modo. It focuses on the same 40 poses and has an environmentally conscious philosophy. Sumits is spreading nationwide with its own flair of music and pose series and available here in the Inland
NW at The Mat. Corepower is an example of one of the emerging giants in the yoga western world that offers heated yoga among its other classes and has grown from one studio in Denver in 2002 to 83 studios in 2013. For those yogis craving the heat without the familiarity of the same series, there is a growing hot yoga community for you in hot vinyasa, hot power, and hot flow. Here in the Inland NW, a handful of local hot yoga studios have opened for business and are growing their number of students daily while established studios are adding hot yoga classes to the schedule. The room typically ranges in heat between 90-104 degrees. These yogis do not do the same series of poses, but rather flow between yoga postures that will vary in each class. Many hot yoga practitioners prefer not to eat 2 hours prior to class to avoid nausea from the deep breathing and heat. If you find that hot yoga is not for you, there are many other local yoga studios, yoga dvd’s, and internet yoga websites that offer other types that may fit perfectly into your lifestyle! Yoga on! Astragalus
What is Astragalus?
Astragalus (Huang qi in Chinese) is a tonic herb from the legume family. It is indigenous to China and has been used as a preventive health tonic in Traditional Chinese Medicine since ancient times. The botanical name of Astragalus is: Astragalus membranaceus. Astragalus is one of the herbs known to stimulate the body’s natural production of interferon. It is known as a “Chi” tonic or replenisher. Chi is a concept in Chinese Medicine of the body’s “Vital Life Energy”. Astragalus is suitable for longterm use as an important aid in supporting the body’s natural defense system.
According to Dr. Andrew Weil, Astragalus can be beneficial for: • People who “get everything going around” • Those with immune deficiencies • Healthy people year round Astragalus also helps to balance night or day sweats by what is known in Traditional Chinese Medicine is its ability to help build Yin and Blood as well as the protective Chi in the body. In Western Medicine, Astragalus has been shown to benefit the immune system by increasing natural killer cell activity, and by boosting bodies’ production of antibodies and interferon. Astragalus has numerous immune enhancing benefits. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, long-term intake of Astragalus builds Chi (Vital Life Energy) in the body. This extra Chi helps to prevent depletion of our resources. Astragalus in combination with Dong Quai improves the circulation of Chi and blood in the skin making it more supple and healthy. Astragalus has shown no toxicity with long term use. Astragalus should be discontinued when experiencing excess heat in the body as it is a warming herb. It should be discontinued when there are symptoms of fever, dry cough, or constipation. When these symptoms are not present Astragalus may be continued and taken daily. As with all herbal and dietary supplements, you should always inform your physician about what you are taking in order to avoid potentially dangerous drug interactions. Most of us deal with jealousy in some form, and when
it comes up, it’s never pretty. It might be jealousy when your girlfriend seems interested in someone else, or when one of your best friends becomes close with someone else, or when your parents give a lot of attention to your sibling, or when other people are having more fun than you. Why do we get jealous? What harm does it do us? How do we overcome it? I’ll admit that I get jealous, and the me that gets jealous is not my favorite self. I don’t like myself when I get jealous. So what do I do? I watch myself. I see it happening. I acknowledge it. And then I give myself a hug. Let’s look at little deeper at jealousy first, and then go over what we can do about it. What is Jealousy? Jealousy is simply an emotional reaction to a past wound. It gets triggered when something in the present reminds us of what hurt us before. We fear abandonment. Our parents get divorced (mine did), our spouse cheats on us, our best friend leaves us. And so, because this hurt us so much, we remember it in our hearts, and it becomes incredibly difficult to forget it. It becomes a part of us, this wound, this fear. It surfaces at times when it’s not helpful. It starts to control us. And so this wound becomes a controlling factor in our lives, and we become the worst selves that we can be. We don’t want that. Let’s learn to be our better selves. How to Heal the Wounds and Overcome Jealousy Jealousy works because it happens without us realizing it’s happening, or without looking deeper into what’s happening. It has an unseen power over us, because it’s unseen. So first we have to see it. Recognize when you’re jealous. Don’t look away. We don’t like to acknowledge the bad parts of us, because then we’re admitting we’re not always great. But it’s important, because if we don’t, it has more power over us. So recognize it, acknowledge it. Then realize that it’s an old wound from the past. This is your old self that’s gotten hurt, and because of this, your old self is scared, angry, anxious. Afraid of abandonment. Angry at others for threatening to abandon you. This is perfectly OK. It’s completely understandable to be hurt when someone violates your trust. Your old self is justified. But that’s in the past. You need to give your old self a hug, and say that it’s OK to grieve, but also acknowledge that you need to let go and move on and grow.
finding a healthy lifestyle through balance. It also helps to realize that the past wound only happened because you had a self-centered view of the universe. You took your parents’ divorce, or your spouse cheating on you, as a judgment of you as a person, as an abandonment of you after they judged you and found you lacking. That’s not true, though. They left for reasons of their own — they were afraid, they were dealing with their own issues of abandonment and jealousy, they weren’t mature enough to commit, and so on. The reasons they left had nothing to do with you, and if you realize that, it might hurt less. Heal the wounds with compassion. Then grow. How to Grow Let’s heal the wounds and then become our better selves: 1. Don’t act on jealousy. When you recognize it, pause, watch the fear and the urges to act jealously, and just sit and watch it. Don’t let jealousy rule your actions. Take some time away from the action if needed. 2. Imagine your better self. What’s the person you want to be? Do you want to be jealous, or would you rather be secure in yourself, confident, happy, and happy for others? Imagine this better self, then act consistently with that self. 3. Relieve your suffering. When you act in jealousy, it hurts others. It hurts you. This doesn’t feel good. Learn to see the suffering you’re causing, in others and in yourself. And realize that’s not how you want to live. This suffering is entirely caused by acting out of fear. Instead, act compassionately — with compassion for others but also yourself, by letting the fear go. 4. Let go of your attachment. You are holding onto a past hurt, and are hurting your current self because of it. Learn to let go. Practice letting go. It gets easier as you practice. 5. Be less self-centered. When we are jealous, we think the world revolves around us. My friend shouldn’t be getting so close to that person — doesn’t she know that I’m more important? My spouse shouldn’t have fun without me — don’t they know that I’m the only one they should care about and have fun with? No one should go on amazing trips and go to fun parties without including me. And so on. Of course, the world doesn’t revolve around you (or me), and so once we remove ourselves from the center of everything, we can expand our heart to include everyone, not just us. Be happy for others. Feel their pain and fear and anger and jealousy too. Jealousy isn’t something you can just get rid of immediately, like an old coat you don’t want anymore. It’s a wound that needs healing, a hurt that needs compassion. Moving beyond jealousy is a set of skills you need to learn with practice, and a trust that needs to be earned with time. TRAINER BIO

SAM PAPPAS
Owner of Edge Fitness
What’s the most important thing you think people should know about health and fitness?
Your health and fitness are not as complicated as the world makes it seem. It’s actually very simple and based upon proven science. Unfortunately, million dollar companies have most people convinced that being healthy is a complicated process of taking specific drugs or supplements and eating a magic combination of foods. Not true! The hardest part about improving your health and fitness is actually deciding to make changes and committing to those changes, no matter what. Most of you are smart enough to figure out what’s healthy and what’s not healthy. There is no magic answer. If you want to BE healthy and fit, you have to LIVE your life that way.
What sets you apart from other personal trainers?
I see people as a whole package. If you come to me because you want to lose weight, your exercise routine is only going to be a small portion of what we work on. There are obviously things in the way that you are living your daily life that are leading you to be overweight. You have to make tough changes, break old habits and build new healthy habits. What makes me different is that I will put all of my energy into helping you identify what’s holding you back. I won’t allow excuses (you’ve put your trust in me to help you reach a specific goal and I won’t let you get away with not doing what it takes) but I will stand by you and guide you through all of the hard work that it will take to make the changes and reach your goals.
Fitness Bikini & Figure Competitions have become very popular with women in our area. You’ve trained several women who’ve won trophies. What’s your advice to someone who might be considering training for one of these competitions?

Training for this sport is very grueling! It takes a serious commitment and hard core discipline, just like any other sport. Most women see how amazing the athletes on stage look and decide that they want to look like that too, without actually considering what it takes to get there. The women on stage have spent months (and even years) preparing to compete and ultimately reach their goals of winning. You will become a competitor only after you step off the stage from your first show and decide to do it again. Before you make the choice to train for one of these competitions, don’t just do it to “say you did it once”, decide to go all in and be a competitor!

BEAUTY
healthy body and mind.
blending for
beauty -----------------------------Written by Brandon Loken
We all can remember the saying from childhood,
you are what you eat. What we choose to put in our bodies turns into the fuel that gives us energy, lets our brains think and process and even affects our skin and hair. Why then is it so difficult to make the most informed decision about what we are eating? Making small changes to our diet can have profound effects on our lives and well being. There is one habit that we can adopt into our diets that is arguably the best anti-aging, weight reducing habit out there. Blending, or the process of combining fruits and vegetables in a high speed blender. For the last few years, juicing has garnered much more attention in the media as far as being a trendy diet. There are constant commercials and documentaries about the benefits that juicing has for us. And by all means, juicing is great for us. It is still a way for our bodies to get so many of the vitamins and nutrients it so desperately needs. But anyone who has juiced has seen how much of the fruit and vegetables that is not used in the process, or the pulp. This left over is packed full of body pleasing goodness, but there is so much that is being lost in the pulp. Most importantly, the pulp contains the indigestible fiber that are bodies crave. Fiber lets our bodies more easily break down and digest the food we eat and also aids in making our bodies feel full, reducing the amount of food that we eat. When juicing, the lack of fiber also makes our body absorb the nutrients and sugars in the drink quicker. If your juice contains lots of fruit versus vegetables, the quick
absorption of all of the natural sugars can cause a potentially unsafe spike in the bodies blood sugar. Depending on your personal health situation, this is something very serious to take into consideration. Blending can be done with many, less expensive blenders. By all means, the $500 model at Costco will do an amazing job and nothing will slow it down. However, the $50 model I have in my pantry can do a darn good job as well, for a tenth of the price. I have just learned to work with it and what it does and doesnt like. I encourage you to have fun with blending. Try any combination that you can think of with fruits and vegetables. I have included one of my favorite recipes here. Share with us on Facebook your favorites too and lets all get healthy!
Island Oasis Smoothie Ingredients: • Water and Flesh of 1 Coconut cut into small cubes • 1 Mango • 1 Papaya • Large Slice Pineapple • 1 Lime • Large Handful Spinach • Large Handful Kale • Small Handful Mint • 2 Cups of Ice Place ice in bottom of blender, then pour in remaining ingredients. Hand pulse (if your blender cant do this on its own) a few time to break up the large pieces. Blend on high for 30 to 45 seconds until smooth. Enjoy!

The Garnet in Coeur d’ Alene Story and Photos by Miles Torres
The Garnet
Farm Food Elevated McLane Farms is a small, “boutique” farm in Coeur d’Alene where Maine Anjou cows and Berkshire pigs roam in large, airy, open pastures, chickens chase after them happily and produce large, fresh, natural eggs, and where veggies grow in abundance on sun drenched hillsides. The benefactor of all that goodness? The Garnet. A small breakfast and lunch eatery whose menu is unique in our region, hearty, and often experimental - have you ever had breakfast spaghetti? That alone makes the short trip to mid-town Coeur d’Alene worth it.
First things first. Yes there is a lot of healthy food going on at The Garnet, but whatever you do, do not think this is health food. “Health food” carries a certain connotation of “starvation”, which could not be further from the truth. Inch-thick, hearty, multi-grain toast absolutely slathered in creamy butter, as far as I’m concerned, is the best way to start a healthy, happy day. And yeah they have that. It comes standard with their corned beef hash and eggs which I’ve had no less than 4 times. The corned beef hash is one of the most delicious meals I’ve ever had, anywhere. It’s made fresh and the beef is beyond tender, a little sweet, slightly peppery, moist, and forked pulled surrounded by sweet pepper, onion and rich, creamy potatoes, with a smattering of sea salt and herbs. It’s one of the few times I thought that just maybe a beer would be a good substitute for juice. I refrained, but that’s not to say it won’t happen. Berkshire pigs are known for really just one thing - flavor, and the Garnet is always in supply of fresh Berkshire right from their own farm. The Berkshire, discovered on the shire of the Berks in England over 300 years ago, has kept its pure bloodline and all the benefits that come with it. A rich, heavily marbled product that is perfect for long, slow cooking and curing, and prized around the world as the most flavorful pork available. The bacon produced by these lovely black and white spotted beauties will inspire you to find a way to eat more bacon in spite of your paleo regiment. But their bacon, which is cured right here in CDA, is only the beginning. A few other surprises you might run into at the Garnet include special menu items like pulled pork eggs benedict, salmon and sweet potatoes, goat yogurt (made fresh) and berries, or maybe duck confit hash. Yes, they have oatmeal (delicious!) and omelets and pancakes - but everything has a twist, and every twist sends you down an undiscovered path of possibilities. Be sure to ask for their white beans with eggs - holy moly.

A BLT looks something like Berkshire bacon, sprouts, avocado, tomato and garlic aioli, or maybe try the Maryland style crab cakes, spinach salad with strawberry vinaigrette and chilled cucumber avocado soup. I’ve also heard their smoked salmon chowder will make you drop to your knees and thank God you’re a man (or woman, or current gender affiliation). Again, all unique takes on classic food. The menu abounds in happiness, local food, and adventure. (continued on page 40)

The (Occasional) Dinner
One of the other special (and highly recommended) offerings from the Garnet are wine paired dinners - complex, carefully thought out and masterfully executed menus featuring multiple wines paired to an ensemble of dishes. From pork (which they held in December of 2013) to their most recent held on February 27th which featured huge amounts of carefully chosen wines paired with beef, pork, lamb, salads, appetizers and dessert(s). The amount of effort and care that go into each dinner shows in the details. Joe Black, Chef at the Garnet, basically puts it all on the line and always delivers a masterful presentation that leaves you wanting so much more. These are fun, limited-seating nights and you should check out their next offering - likely in late Spring. Angeline and Justine McLane, owners of the Garnet have a passion for their food and community - and it all comes out at this one-of-a-kind, food lovers gathering place. There have been comparisons to other “local food” restaurants, but really the Garnet sets the bar at-will. Their classic, local, and highly experimental menu brings flair to the CDA food scene, while also keeping it very “down tempo”, relaxed and community conscientious.

A look at
Macular Degeneration | Written by Nanette Brisbane, O.D. |
What is Macular Degeneration? The words evoke
great anxiety in the hearts of many. Most people know someone who has been diagnosed with the eye condition, and many know someone whose life is affected significantly. So just what is this all about? First we must understand what the macula is. The macula is the critical part of the eye, specifically the retina, which is responsible for detailed vision. Although very small, the macula has the highest concentration of special cells called photoreceptors. These photoreceptors focus our vision allowing us to read, see faces, and drive. Damage to these cells cause the vision loss in macular degeneration. The rest of the retina is responsible for our peripheral vision and is not affected by macular degeneration. However, the peripheral vision does not allow us the detailed vision that the macula does. Therefore, people with macular degeneration will never go completely blind.
There are two forms of macular degeneration.
Dry macular degeneration is the common form which is usually slow to change. Approximately 10% of those with dry macular degeneration go on to develop the wet form, where new blood vessels grow in the layers of the macula. These unhealthy blood vessels can then leak causing dramatic loss of vision. Macular degeneration is caused by a number of factors including, but not limited to, age, genetics, and increased oxidative stress on the eye. Specific risk factors include age, genetics, race, smoking, exposure to sunlight, diets high in saturated fats and cholesterol, lack of exercise, vascular disease, and high blood pressure. While age and family history are not controllable, we have the ability to reduce some of the other risk factors.
We as individuals can help reduce our risk of developing macular degeneration. Specifically, we can all protect ourselves from UV light by wearing sunglasses. Equally important is exercising, taking vitamin supplements, and eating a diet rich in green leafy vegetables, highly colored fruits and vegetables, and fish. Maintaining blood pressure and normal weight as well as not smoking are all factors we can control. Thankfully, there are treatments available for the wet form of macular degeneration. Most recently, the treatment of choice are injections into the eye with special medications that help block new blood vessel growth and leakage of these vessels. These injections have helped maintain vision as well as actually regaining some vision. Additionally, the most recent vitamin supplementation information has been released following the conclusion of the AREDS2 study. Eye vitamins available over the counter have been shown to decrease the risk of vision loss in patients with moderate to advanced dry macular degeneration. Regular dilated eye examinations are your first important step in helping with the diagnosis and treatment of macular degeneration. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle may be our best defense in helping to reduce our chances of developing this condition. Ongoing research may someday reveal other ways of reducing or preventing the development of macular degeneration. Maybe Mom had it right all along!

Financial Well-Being
Seniors Chasing Yield | Written by John Marcheso | To say that the country has faced it’s challenges

mar | apr 2014
these last 5 years would be grossly understated. Everywhere you turn one can see the scars of America’s economy and its effect on our people. The focus of this article addresses specifically how our senior’s financial health and well-being have been damaged, which is creating a financial environment compelling investors who originally wanted a conservative return on their savings to seek much greater risk to sustain an income stream. Our government’s monetary and fiscal policies are guided by an effort to stimulate our economy and to grow our GDP. They have chosen to grow our economy by lowering interest rates to record lows. This in effect is designed to make cheap money available, stimulating businesses and individuals to borrow and reinvest thereby growing GDP. We could go much deeper into this explanation, but suffice to say; so far all we have been able to accomplish is moving the bar slightly in the housing market, allowing people with good credit to refinance their houses: A Bright Spot! Beyond that, artificially low interest rates has been a negative for consumers as it pertains to investors, i.e. seniors used to living on interest from traditional C.D.s and money markets at banks. For the last four years interest rates paid by banks on SAFE certificates of deposits have averaged from .25 to 1.25%. Prior to 2008, if a senior had a few hundred thousand in savings, they could expect to have an income of $8,000-$10,000 per year along with asset protection by the FDIC; but I’m not telling you anything you have not already felt in your pocket books. After 4 years many people have dug deep into their savings just to maintain a meager style of living. Not Good!
This is a paradigm shift, forcing many folks to abandon the safe, conservative approach to income, thus seeking higher yields. Now we see people who were already burnt once in the stock market or maybe never even invested before, purchasing stocks and bonds, thereby, dramatically increasing their risk! What’s a person to do you ask? The first thing for sure is to seek out a professional independent financial advisor; someone who will take the time to understand who you are and what type of risk you are willing to take. Both you and your advisor need to do your research and due diligence on the recommendations. If you are buying an equity, we suggest you seek value and a company with a history of paying a good dividend. The interest in purchasing bonds has grown exponentially in the last 5 years from people seeking higher yields. If the interest rates do rise, market values with bonds will decline. There are other, non-correlated investments like REITs and BDCs, also known as direct investments, as well as some insurance products that might be appropriate for some investors. For many, the term non-correlated investments might need further clarification. We in the business tend to use financial
“After 4 years many people have dug deep into their savings just to maintain a meager style of living. Not Good!” terms that are new to investors. What we mean by these terms are, investments and assets that tend to change in value independent of the core financial markets such as stocks and bonds. Investments, such as, real property, precious metal, and private equity ventures, are such examples. Also, new to our market place are BDC’s or Business Development Companies, which are also non-correlated and primarily deal with the debt or lending side of private Middle America Companies. Some, or all, of these assets can be viewed in a non-correlated investment strategy designed to counter the price movement and volatility of the stock market. These investments are generally considered to be less volatile and not as liquid, but may provide the diversification and income you seek. Certain net worth rules apply so be sure to ask your advisor if you qualify. It is this authors opinion that now, more than ever, you need the advice of a professional, independent advisor to help you navigate through these turbulent times.
