LETTER from the publisher I was shocked and saddened. I arrived at my children’s daycare last week to learn that one of the father’s is no longer with us because of choice. He committed suicide leaving two precious kids behind – and I am haunted by it. I’ll be honest, I’ve had some rough patches of depression in my life but I have never gotten to the point that I believed ending my life would be the answer. It makes me heart broken and humbled that there’s such a darkness that so many go thru. (Rest in peace Robin Williams) I keep thinking to myself – did anyone see any signs? Were there any red flags that he was that far depressed? Depressed enough to leave behind two beautiful young children. So today, and everyday, I encourage you to be kind, listen to your intuitions and reach out... help someone. You never know... you might just save a life.

what is Restorative Yoga?
----------------Restorative yoga is a form of relaxation to restore and rejuvenate your body and mind. By supporting your body with props and resting into the pose, you alternately stimulate and relax your body to move towards balance. Some poses have an overall benefit while others target an individual part, like the lungs and the heart. All create specific physiological responses that are beneficial to health and can reduce the effects of stress-related disease. Restorative yoga is gentle and restful. ON THE COVER What is CrossFit? CrossFit is a training methodology, meaning it is general fitness philosophy, open to interpretation- and it can mean different things to different people. Greg Glassman, the founder of CrossFit, defines it as “constantly varied movement, across broad time and modal domains”which is a great way of saying that if you want to be good at life, you need to train accordingly. What is your athletic background? Jonathan: I always gravitated towards endurance sports growing up, and after running, swimming, and racing bikes in high school, I walked on to the University of Washington crew team as a sophomore. I immediately fell in love with the sport, and before long was on scholarship at UWfinishing my rowing career with the United States national team, where I represented USA in the quad and the single. I picked up CrossFit in my last year of rowing, as an off-season strength and conditioning program, and knew that the combination of hard work and results were special- I made incredible gains, almost overnight, and wanted to share this great new (at the time, in 2007) method with all of my friends. Derek: I played sports as a kid but nothing too serious- my passion by the age of 14 was strength training. My dad owned a copy of Arnold Schwarzenegger’s “Encyclopedia of Modern Bodybuilding” and I read it cover to cover. Ever since that time fitness has played a huge role in my life. Immediately after high school I joined the Marines and was lucky enough to get selected for and make it through Recon training. I thrived from being pushed both mentally and physically, and getting paid to jump out of planes and climb mountains was icing on the cake. Physical fitness is held to an extremely high standard in the Recon community, so it made sense that myself and my team mates found CrossFit long before it went mainstream. Once I started CrossFit everything just clicked and the questions I had about training became so clear- I got stronger, faster, and more flexible. It prepared me well and made me better at my job. Pretty soon I became more involved with the CrossFit method and began training my team mates. Things progressed and I realized it was my dream to open a gym so I could help more people.
Q&A with the Boys of CrossFit CDA
How long has CrossFit CDA been around? CFCDA has been open since February of 2008; aside from a YMCA in southern Idaho, we were the first standalone affiliate in the state. We’ve had multiple locations throughout the years, finally settling in at our downtown/4th street spot about 3 years ago. What makes CrossFit different from other gyms? As I mentioned above, CrossFit is a methodology, open to interpretation. At CFCDA, our brand of CrossFit is different than anywhere else we’ve seen or heard of. Our unique mix of solid programming, safe progression, and above all, fun, engaging workouts have ensured that every athlete that walks through our doors meets goals, and has a great time doing it. We are well known for our success with competitive athletes, and have been equally effective with the everyday athlete. That, coupled with our amazing community (we call it The Tribe), makes for a fun, motivating place where people can come, work hard, and reach their goals. Can anyone do CrossFit? Absolutely. The beauty of CrossFit is that it can be exactly what you need it to be. Overweight, and looking to lose some pounds? No problem: scale the reps, range of motion, and load as needed. Recovering from an injury, or surgery, and looking to get back to full speed? We can help. Maybe you “used to be athletic”, and want to feel young again? Come and see us! What separates CFCDA from other gyms is our coaches have to knowledge and experience to help every individual find the right “version” of CrossFit for them- we’ll adjust your workout so that it is challenging, but attainable. What would you say to someone who is on the fence about trying CrossFit? Try it! Your first class is always free, and we love introducing new athletes to the power of CrossFit. Just be prepared to work hard: there is no shortcut to true results. Once you see how CrossFit can make the challenge of being physically fit rewarding, we’ll be happy to invite you in to become a part of The Tribe!

Kim’s passion has always surrounded health, wellness, and nutrition.
She has a Bachelors of Science in Exercise Science with an Exercise Physiology emphasis, is a Registered Yoga Instructor, has multiple years of personal training experience at the Phoenix Suns Athletic Club, and is a certified gymnastics coach. Kim has worked with professional athletes, corporate America, injured, those with physical and/or mental challenges, and children. Through her own journey of injuries from a very active lifestyle, Kim found that yoga not only heals but can be a lifelong activity that brings balance. Kim’s style of yoga is fun-loving and powerful as it finds unity within flexibility, strength, and balance. How long have you been practicing yoga? I fell in love with yoga after my first class in 2011. I immediately began a daily practice of 1-2 studio classes a day, privates, workshops, and teacher training. I have not slowed down since and began paddleboard yoga in 2013 and Acro yoga this year. I love being a student of yoga and sharing my practice by teaching privates, classes, workshops and retreats. What is your favorite style of yoga? I love hot Vinyasa power flow with some good tunes. I enjoy the heat, the music, the challenge, and the freedom to get my handstand on! There is a style out there for everyone at any level. That is the beauty of yoga! What are some of the benefits about adding yoga to your fitness routine? The benefits are endless. I am healthier and stronger today than I was 20 years ago because of the postures, transitions, stillness and breath associated with yoga. In our fitness routine or our daily life, each of us desire and/or need different things. It may be strength, flexibility, stability, or peace. Yoga allows you to become more balanced within all of these facets in not only the physical aspect but also the mental. As the body and mind find more balance, your day to day life including a fitness routine may find more ease, strength, and happiness. The best part is that there is a type of yoga out there for everyone, and there are so many avenues to practice - online, DVD’s, at home, in the studio, or with books. Do I have to be flexible to do yoga? My answer to this question is always the same: “Saying you are not flexible enough for yoga is like saying you are too dirty to take a bath.” You encourage inversions in your practice. What are inversions and why are they beneficial? When yogis speak of inversions, they are usually referring to handstands, forearm stands, and headstands. However, any pose that positions your heart above your head is an inversion such as downdog and standing forward fold. If inversions work for your body, there can be many benefits: improve circulation, improve lymph movement, energize, relax, increase strength, improve balance, build confidence, literally gives you a new perspective, and may make you smile. I personally find that my favorite posture, handstand, always gives me what I need and keeps me in the present moment. If I need energy, holding a handstand renews me. If I need to relax, holding a handstand calms my body and mind. I handstand whenever I can and where ever I can!
Good Health Means Good Mental Health and We Are All In It Together Written by Steve Gajewski MS, LPC
Few families go untouched by the challenges of
mental illness, ranging from relatively common (but often deadly serious) conditions such as depression and anxiety, to an intimidating list of many others including bi-polar disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), borderline personality disorder, and schizophrenia. All too often mental illness results in tragedy – broken families, drug abuse, trouble with the law, wasted potential, and suicide. The August 11 suicide of the beloved actor Robin Williams illustrates that no segment of society, no matter what level of success or access to resources, are immune to serious mental health issues and their most extreme consequences. In this issue, Publisher Monica Lang shares a personal story of the impact from the recent suicide of a young Coeur d’Alene father who left behind a wife and two young children, along with a stunned extended family, school, and community. Such tragedies should be wakeup calls for all of us to be more alert to the signs of mental and emotional distress – and more ready to reach out and help. But it’s all too easy to plow ahead, unconscious of signs and symptoms of serious distress, amid the chaotic demands of day-to-day life, compassion fatigue, denial and avoidance. Moreover, even in the 21st century there remains a stigma associated with seeking help for mental health issues, especially among men who are likely to buy into the “real men don’t ask for help” rule of manliness. The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI, 2010) estimates that close to 54,000 adults and 18,000 children live with serious mental health conditions in our state of about 1.6 million residents. These numbers do not even
begin to address the fact that a much larger number of our family, friends and neighbors will experience serious depression, anxiety and other mental health challenges sometime during their lives. Such challenges can be caused by serious difficulties making a living, maintaining healthy relationships, coping with major physical health issues, dealing with trauma, or meeting other life difficulties. As of 2010, Idaho had the sixth highest suicide rate in the country – a shocking 49% higher than the national average according to the Suicide Prevention Action Network of Idaho. Converting a cold statistic into grim numbers in our own community, the 5 northern counties (Region 1) of Idaho, with a population of only about 215,000, reported 233 suicides from 2008 to 2012. That is a lot of human tragedy in our own neighborhood. Mental health challenges are treatable, and where individuals can’t or won’t seek help, their path to recovery depends upon family and friends providing support and where necessary steering their loved ones into professional help. It is important to talk explicitly about what is going on and not to underestimate the possibility of self-destructive decisions and actions. This may include exerting some leverage (including ganging up if necessary), as withdrawal and resistance are common features of psychological difficulties. Resources are available, including emergency help. Please see the box for a short list of key resources in our area. We are a community - let’s watch out for one another! By the way, strong men are those who DO get the help they need to be happy, healthy and able in their many roles in the family, community and workplace.

Gluten Free or Gluten Be? Gluten free diets are all the rage these days,
touted for their abilities to help people lose weight, decrease chronic diseases like arthritis or cure conditions like acne, allergies, and psoriasis. However, a gluten free diet is not synonymous with “healthy” and does not necessarily guarantee weight loss. Let’s first clarify what this little particle that has garnered so much media attention actually is. Gluten is a protein found as peptide fractions in wheat (gliadin and glutenin), rye (secalin), and barley (hordein). Gluten has important hygroscopic properties in baking and gives these grains elasticity. The “springing back” action that you feel when you knead dough is from the development of gluten particles. Oats and buckwheat (despite the name) are naturally gluten free, but are often contaminated with traces of gluten during processing. When gluten is digested, it reaches the intestine relatively intact as it is more resistant to intestinal enzymes. In a healthy intestine, this poses no problem. However, in a genetically compromised individual, intact gluten peptides can have serious implications. Those with celiac disease (CD) cannot digest gluten, and must strictly adhere to a gluten free diet or the repercussions will be far more serious than bloating and abdominal pain, including permanent damage to the intestines, micronutrient deficiencies from malabsorption, and possible development of further autoimmune disorders. For someone with CD, ingestion of gluten causes the tiny hair-like projections in the intestinal wall, called villi, to react and cause an inflammatory response. Over years of aggravation, the villi become blunted and unable to absorb vital nutrients such as folate, vitamin B12, iron, and vitamin D. This results poor growth, neurological problems, fatigue, anemia, erosion of enamel, loss of bone density, infertility, depression, irritability, and more.
Written by Natalie Colla
Celiac disease is an autoimmune disorder that manifests itself in various ways, not only via traditional symptoms such as abdominal discomfort, diarrhea, weight loss, skin rashes, and bloating, but it may be masked through other conditions that are actually a result of CD, such as arthritis, depression, fibromyalgia, migraines, weight gain, and irritability, to name just a few. This “silent celiac disease” is on the rise; in fact, it is suggested that for every case that is diagnosed, another eight cases escape diagnosis.1 Though the research is relatively new, it is thought that ingestion of gluten in genetically compromised individuals causes loss of integrity in tight junctions between intestinal cells, allowing the passage of antigens from the gut and exogenous sources into the bloodstream to trigger an immune response. However, gluten is not the only trigger of this “leaky gut” occurrence, and it is therefore unfair to single out gluten as the cause for obesity, diabetes, multiple sclerosis, and other autoimmune diseases, as these conditions are caused by a complex combination of factors such as an imbalance of gut bacteria, antibiotic and corticosteroid use, stress, excessive simple sugar consumption, and alcohol consumption. Furthermore, there are thousands of proteins, additives, colors, flavors, extracts, herbal supplements, medications, and environmental and lifestyle factors that may play a role in these conditions. If you suffer from any of these nontraditional, subclinical signs and symptoms, rather than simply condemning all sources of gluten, get tested first by a licensed practitioner to confirm or deny the existence of gluten intolerance or CD. The only cure for CD is strict adherence to a gluten free diet. Even the tiniest traces of hidden gluten, such as that found in French fries, medications, communion wafers, condiment jars, soy sauce, and imitation meats can cause a reaction. northidahowellness.com
17
Celiac disease is confirmed via blood testing
for immunoglobulin-A (IgA) antibodies, which are present in CD. These tests are highly specific and sensitive, validating their use in clinical practice. However, a small portion of CD disease patients are IgA deficient, and therefore, if they test negative for CD via blood test then a small intestinal biopsy is necessary to confirm.2 Even if you test negative for CD, you may still have gluten intolerance or sensitivity. Anti-gliadin IgA (AGA) and anti-tissue transglutimase antibodies (tTG-Abs) are typically only detectable in the blood if the intestines have already undergone extensive damage.3 If AGA and tTG-Abs are not detected in the blood but found in the saliva, you may have a gluten intolerance and not CD.4 Gluten sensitivity differs from celiac disease in that it is not an autoimmune disorder, but more like a food intolerance. Therefore, gluten sensitivity often involves more of the traditional GI symptoms rather than other manifestations. This means that if you are gluten intolerant and slip up and eat a chicken strip while out to lunch, you may experience an upset stomach but will not experience the same damaging repercussions as someone with CD. Those with gluten sensitivity will benefit from a gluten free diet, though it does not typically have to be as restrictive. In summation, if you have CD you must absolutely follow a gluten free diet, and if you are gluten intolerant you will benefit from a gluten free diet. So, what about those individuals who do not have celiac disease or gluten intolerance, but feel better and report losing weight on a gluten free diet? People typically lose weight when they first begin a gluten free diet because their calorie intake takes a nose dive. When you’re first learning how to shop, prepare, and cook gluten free foods, it can be overwhelming and you may feel that your choices are limited. Anyone will lose weight when they go from eating cheeseburgers and pizza to eating a gluten-free friendly green salad with chickpeas, or brown rice, chicken, and broccoli. In most cases, weight loss from gluten free diets is a result not of lack of gluten, but of lower calorie intake. Furthermore, gluten free diets are not necessarily healthier. Many gluten free packaged items have added sugar, sodium, and fat to make up for the fact that they have the gluten protein removed. For example, gluten free fudge brownies are loaded with sugar, while gluten free pretzels are a source of empty, refined carbohydrates. Furthermore, gluten free breads and other grains tend to be much lower in fiber and have a higher glycemic index than their gluten-containing counterparts, which may cause wide swings in blood sugar, food cravings, and irritability. Lack of fiber intake can cause irregularity, weight gain, lack of blood sugar control, higher blood lipid levels, compromise gut microflora and therefore intestinal integrity and immune system function, 18
sep | oct 2014
and has been linked to increased risk of colon cancer. The recommendation for fiber intake is 25-38 grams daily, while most Americans only get about 15 grams. Increasing fiber by adding plenty of fruits, vegetables, and nuts and seeds to the diet can help get your intake where it needs to be. Focus on high fiber, gluten-free grains like amaranth, wild rice, uncontaminated buckwheat, millet, quinoa, sorghum, and teff. These grains are packed with vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants, and make a great option for a hot breakfast cereal, chilled lunch salad mixed with veggies, or as a side dish with dinner. Experiment baking with high fiber, glutenfree flours like almond meal, fava bean flour, chickpea flour, flaxmeal, or Bob’s Red Mill gluten-free oat bran flour. Try adding ground flaxseeds to salads, smoothies, and cereal, and incorporate beans and legumes to increase fiber and other plant nutrients. Gluten free diets can be healthful if they focus on whole foods from fruits, veggies, lean protein from fish, chicken, eggs, organic dairy, and grass-fed meat, and healthy fats such as nuts, avocados, olive oil, and coconut oil. A gluten free diet isn’t for everyone. Going gluten free for purely weight loss reasons is unnecessarily restrictive and expensive. Furthermore, simply eliminating gluten to cut pounds may mask the real cause of inability to lose weight, such as thyroid disease or hormonal imbalances. If you suspect CD, gluten intolerance, or have an autoimmune disease that may put you at risk for gluten sensitivity, then you should get tested by a physician to confirm. If you currently follow a gluten free diet, focus on whole foods (which are often naturally gluten free), incorporating high fiber gluten free grains, and avoid overindulging on processed gluten free snacks. Going gluten free without sacrificing vital nutrients and your favorite foods takes a little time and effort, but a registered dietitian or other qualified health practitioner can help you make a smooth transition to your gluten free journey. My Weight Loss Journey to Pregnancy
“Weight Loss is Healthy for Me... that’s why I’m doing it.” Written by Miles Torres
The words from a self described
“Obese” women are 43% less likely to be able to achieve pregnancy than “normal” weight women”... WebMD

“plus-size bride” filled with an unspoken, inner ache. Keeping it “practical” seems to make it easier for Amy to address - It’s healthy, it’s good for me, there are physical benefits, it helps me professionally - calculated, hospital room steril responses that keep it “happy” to avoid the realities of being “fat”. “Losing weight is not a “goal”” says Amy Shannon, “it’s a lifestyle change. If you set a goal and make it, it’s very easy to go back on the goal, since you can achieve it again.” With Amy there were three, major lifestyle changes that were about to occur which compelled her to find a solution. (1) She was getting married soon and did not want to be that “plus-size” bride. (2) She wanted to have kids and understood the risks of being overweight and pregnant, and (3) she wanted to be an active mommy who could keep up with her baby, toddler, teen, and not be winded after a few steps. In a recent study conducted by WebMD women who are considered “obese” are 43% less likely to be able to achieve pregnancy than “normal” weight women or women who are not considered “obese.” Of the women studied, 10% had a measured BMI of 30% or more and those had the most trouble conceiving. In February 11, 2009 the Journal of the American Medical Association took clinical data from previous studies and concluded that there is a link to birth defects when the mother is overweight or obese. Birth defects included: Neural Tube Defects, Spina Bifida, Cardiovascular Problems and Cleft lip. On the advice of her massage therapist Amy was given the name of a local, group training class specifically designed
for women who need to lose weight. Amy states, “I hesitated, I’m independent and reaching out for help wasn’t natural for me.” A week later, emotionally drained and feeling as if she were losing the battle, she called Holly Childers, a Coeur d’Alene trainer with a group known as “Lifestyle REHAB.” Lifestyle REHAB is a training group focused on body form and weight loss, and for Amy it turned out to be the lifestyle answer she had been seeking. “Other food-based weight loss programs didn’t work for me. It was too easy to get hungry and go back to eating a donut. Plus they were expensive to maintain.” Within weeks Amy became, essentially, the “poster child” for her training group at Lifestyle REHAB, losing more than 80 pounds and maintaining her weight ever since. At that, she beams. “Let’s just say I’ve lost a lot of dress sizes. It gave me a new confidence I thought I’d never have. Confidence to go out at night and feel attractive, confidence in my job and in my marriage. Plus, I felt like I could go off birth control and start a family.” After a miscarriage in early 2014 Amy and her husband were sad but not discouraged. Amazingly, 6 weeks later she was pregnant again and is due in a few months confident in her health and ability to be the mom she always wanted to be. “My trainer, Holly, asked me to “visualize” what it would be like to be my ideal weight. To go through the motions of how my body would feel without the extra weight and what that would do for me. At first it was hard to visualize something I’ve never felt. But now it makes sense and my baby, and that new image, keeps me motivated.”

ASK THE EXPERT
what are
bioidentical hormones? Written by Dr. Pamela Langenderfer
Natural or “bio-identical” hormones (BHRT)
are synthesized from natural plant substances to be identical in structure and function to those our bodies produced naturally before menopause. When hormone production starts to drop below normal levels in the years leading up to menopause, natural hormones are the best and safest way for women to supplement. They are available through your doctor by prescription and tailor made to meet individual need by a compounding pharmacist. From a physiological perspective, bioidentical hormones derived from natural plant sources are identical to those that the body produces for itself, in the right proportions. The hormones used are mainly Estradiol, Estriol, (E2, E3, respectively), progesterone, testosterone, and DHEA.
Where do bioidentical hormones come from?
Natural plant sterols are extracted from soybeans and/or Mexican yams. They are then formulated in the lab to be biologically identical in structure and function to hormones produced in the body. For that reason these hormones are often referred to as “bioidentical, plant derived”. Using bio identical hormones to follow natural physiology and restore hormone balance usually results in fewer side effects and better tolerance by patients.
How can I get natural hormones?
With the exception of low potency progesterone creams (available over-the-counter), natural, bioidentical hormone 22

therapy is generally obtained through a physician’s prescription and made at a compounding pharmacy. Since each person is unique, compounding pharmacies are able to tailor make a hormone prescription for each person.
What is a compounding pharmacy?
Compounding pharmacy’s are the oldest type of pharmacy in the world: an apothecary with a pharmacist trained in formulating prescriptions and who prepares them from pure ingredients on the order of a physician. The pharmacist works closely with the prescribing physician to create just the right dosage form and strength for you, the patient.
What dosage forms are available?
Compounded dosage forms are numerous and variable in nature. Each method has its advantages for use. Usage of specific dosage forms depend on patient compliance, type of response desired and medications involved. Oral capsules, vaginal suppositories, transdermal creams, gels and troches (a lozenge that dissolves between the gum and tongue) are among the variety of dosage forms available to be compounded. Ideally hormone supplementation should be tailored to individual treatment needs. Dr. Pamela Langenderfer is a Naturopathic Physician and Licensed Acupuncturist. It’s Harvest Time! This is an exciting time of year with such an abundance of locally grown produce available to us here in the Northwest. This recipe highlights seasonal produce in a healthful way. Pick out your favorite fresh, crunchy veggies like beets, carrots, kohlrabi, sun chokes, radish, jicama or zucchini. Feel free to choose things you may have never tried before. Have fun with it! In this recipe, most of the veggies are raw - either grated or thinly sliced, served over a bed of warm, short grain, nutty brown rice (or any other whole grain) with kale. But it’s the sunflower seed “Tahini” sauce that really makes all this healthiness - palatable and delicious. Earthy and flavorful, it’s low in fat and oil, vegan and gluten free. Because most of the ingredients are raw, this dish is pumped full of antioxidants, vitamins and living nutrients. Think of this as a “detox” bowl, and know whenever you eat this, you will feel energized and alive and your body will thank you for it. And as the weather begins to cool, try adding roasted sweet potatoes, yams or winter squash to the mix for a heartier bowl. Enjoy!

The Story of American Sleep Deprivation Written by Dr. Erin Elliott
“Good Morning! I’m Dr. Elliott. Oh wait…
I didn’t mean to interrupt your nap.” I have to say, when I am walking in to a consult for sleep apnea it is not uncommon to wake someone up. I recently had my team help someone fill out the paperwork because he kept falling asleep in the waiting room. Are they sleep deprived? Maybe. 40% of Americans regularly get less than 7 hours sleep when our body needs 7.7. Welcome to the world of too much to do, electronics, and bad sleep habits. But then there are those that swear they are in bed for 8 hours but crave much more. “Walking zombies” I call them. The first question I ask is, “Do you wake up refreshed?” And more often than not they say, “Are you supposed to?” Yes!! If you don’t wake up refreshed after a full night’s sleep, when should you feel refreshed? Or patients get so used to feeling tired they think they aren’t and they forget what it feels like to feel good. In this article I hope to give you tricks and tips for better quality sleep and an insiders view to Obstructive Sleep Apnea often disguised by insomnia and snoring. 1 in 4 men and 1 in 10 women and 50% of those over the age of 50 suffer from sleep apnea. What’s scary is that up to 90% remain undiagnosed. Often times it goes undiagnosed because it can show up as insomnia, “low T”, low thyroid, frequent nighttime urination, or poor sleep quality. It’s not just about snoring anymore. I like to show the following diagram to patients to help them understand the vicious cycle that sleep apnea can cause with the highlight of the release of cortisol, the stress hormone.

SNORING BREATHING RESUMES
AIRWAY NARROWS TO POINT OF COLLAPSE

AROUSAL FROM
SLEEP
When our body is supposed to be resting
and entering our deep, refreshing sleep, our body is being interrupted by a shot of cortisol to get our airway open again. Instead of resting, our bodies are fighting for oxygen and working overtime. Isn’t inflammation what we combat for health? It’s no wonder that untreated sleep apnea can lead to high blood pressure, Type II diabetes, weight gain, insomnia, heart issues, strokes, periodontal disease, memory issues, depression, impotence, acid reflux, and auto accidents. The patients that are often diagnosed are really sick and it is obvious they might have a sleep disorder. As a dentist, I work real hard identifying the less obvious sleep apneics. I screen and treat many young and middle aged, petite women that have struggled with sleep for years. The average is 5 years of struggling before it is brought up to them to get a sleep study. This is usually after being treated with thyroid medication, bioidentical hormones, sleeping pills, and vitamins. More often than not they have moderate to severe sleep apnea that can be treated with C-PAP or an oral appliance. And it is all something medical insurance covers, not dental insurance. “Da, da, da! Don’t worry Sleep Apnea Woman is here!” I say that jokingly but truly the world can be a healthier and safer place even if we screen and treat one sleep apneic at a time.
Lack of sleep and untreated sleep disorders
can significantly affect performance, safety and the pocketbook. In fact it has up to $114 billion dollar impact every year in the United States. Sleep loss can cause accidents: Exxon Valdez, 3 Mile Island, and more recently the Bronx Train accident and the Tracey Morgan crash. Sleep deprived drivers perform just as poorly as drunk drivers and are 15x more likely to have a traffic accident. In addition, there is an increase in workplace accidents, poor job performance and increased absenteeism. Sleep deprived and sleep apneics use twice the amount of healthcare dollars than normal control subjects. As illustrated above, lack of sleep and undiagnosed sleep apnea can lead to many health consequences. In addition, sleep loss can “dumb you down” in the fact that your cognitive processes aren’t functioning and most don’t get the deep refreshing sleep that allows learning and memory to be consolidated. And don’t forget family strife. I once treated a man purely because he was tired of his grandkids calling him “Grumpa” instead of grandpa. The divorce rate in couples with sleep deprivation and untreated sleep disorders is 3x the normal rate. Why not find a way to sleep in the same bedroom again? So what can we do to attain better quality sleep? If you are having trouble getting to sleep, staying asleep, snore, or continually wake up unrefreshed talk to your doctor or
dentist about possible sleep apnea. If you have poor sleep habits than take a few notes from this sleep hygiene list (and that doesn’t mean clean sheets): • You should be able to wake up without the aid of an alarm clock. • Early to bed and early to rise is the best cycle for our bodies. • If it is difficult to get to bed early, start by going to bed 15 minutes earlier every week, until you can wake up without the alarm clock. • Instead of taking melatonin in a pill, try to stimulate your natural melatonin by going from a hot bath or shower to a 68 degree room. Also the room should be very dark. Even the light from the alarm clock can affect melatonin release. • The bedroom should be for sleep and sex only. Get electronics out of the bedroom. • Quit smoking • Avoid large meals and alcohol before bed • Exercise • If you wake up at night and are having trouble going back to bed, don’t toss and turn. Try reading with a soft light instead. To be happier, healthier and more productive Americans let’s start by going back to the basics: our sleep quality and quantity. We may just make the world a better place.

Meeting the Growing Demand for Natural Medicine and Wellness
Dr. Jerry, Chiropractor & Certified Acupuncturist
Dr. Pamela, Naturopathic Physician, Licensed Acupuncturist
Holistic and natural medicine has grown
“Functional medicine” is a growing, more focused component to holistic care. According to their website Functional medicine, “is an evolution in the practice of medicine that better addresses the healthcare needs of the 21st century. By shifting the traditional disease-centered focus of medical practice to a more patient-centered approach, functional medicine addresses the whole person, not just an isolated set of symptoms. Functional medicine practitioners spend time with their patients, listening to their histories and evaluating the interactions among genetic, environmental, and lifestyle factors that can influence long-term health and complex, chronic disease. In this way, functional medicine supports the unique expression of health and vitality for each individual.” If it sounds complex, Dr. Pamela and Dr. Jerry simplify the lingo to help clarify that natural, holistic medicine is a safe, proven effective and less invasive route (than traditional medicine) to wellness and peace-of-mind. Among their more popular requests is “Bioidentical hormone replacement therapy,” which is plant-based hormone therapy intended for women who are seeking symptomatic relief from hormone deficiencies and loss.
11% year over year since 2008 and will eclipse 14 billion in sales next year according to IBISWorld. Public demand for botanicals, nutraceuticals (natural pharmaceuticals) and food therapies are also growing rapidly. Sales in Utah alone exceed $924 million for herbs and natural, plant-based remedies. It’s no wonder Lakeside Holistic Health in Coeur d’Alene is outgrowing their current location and looking for additional practitioners to accommodate patient demand. Doctors Pamela Langenderfer and Jerry Bailey started Lakeside Holistic Health in 2006, recognizing the community’s need for a natural, “functional medicine” practice that offered more than the spendthrift prescription doling of traditional medicine - instead learning about the whole person, their history and personal desires as the basis for preventative medicine and natural healing. Lakeside Holistic, located in midtown on 4th Ave. in Coeur d’Alene, offers a full menu of medical services including Naturopathic Medicine, Acupuncture, Fertility, (BBT, Prenatal Care, Pregnancy, Labor and Delivery, Postpartum, In Vitro Fertilization (IVF)), Sports Medicine, and Functional medicine.
Lakeside Holistic Health has two offices, in Coeur d’Alene at 518 North 4th Street (208) 758-0568 and in Liberty Lake at 21651 E. Country Vista Dr. Ste. F (509) 385-0218.

Menopause is a time in a woman’s life
that can be an emotional roller coaster. Menopause can also be a time of deep personal growth both emotionally and spiritually. When the change occurs we can break free from the control that our hormones have on our emotions, our moods and spirit. It is a time that we can explore other aspects of our womanhood, our intuition and spirituality. Menopause can be what we choose for ourselves. It can be a time of sadness if we choose to focus on our loss of youthful skin and vitality. If we are only trying to mitigate those changes, either with cosmetic approaches, or by replacing those hormones – we may never have the opportunity to let our spirit run free. The change can be an amazing journey when we discover a new level of creative energy. Before menopause that energy is focused on family, children, careers, creating homes and life. We can make time for ourselves in this phase to nurture both body and spirit. We can explore new sources of power and inspiration. Mindfulness and prayer, breathing and movement can be new paths to discover our authentic self. Carol Bridges notes that the menopausal wise women taught her that we get two spiritual boosts in our lives, one at adolescence and one at menopause. During these times of drastic self-image alteration, we get a gift of extra juice in order to create the life we want for the next phase of our time on Earth.

Snoring is a very common problem. --------
Not only does it affect the sleep of the person snoring, it also affects the bed partner. We make jokes about snoring and sleeping in separate rooms. We see internet ads and infomercials about "Stop Snoring Now!", but did you know that snoring could be a sign of something more?

the
chiropractic difference Written by Dr Crawford
Often I hear the question, “Why are chiropractors so different?”
34
sep | oct 2014
Chiropractic was started in 1895 by a magnetic healer named D.D. Palmer. Upon examination of his patient, he found a bump on his neck which he proceeded to manipulate. Immediately afterward, the patient, Harvey Lillard, jumped off the table, ran to the window at the sound of the carts in the street for the first time. He had been deaf since an accident as a child. This is where the idea of adjusting the spine to help heal the body started. From there many chiropractors learned better, more effective ways to adjust the spine. Chiropractic went through many battles with other professions to get it’s place in the healthcare system today. In fact, it wasn’t long ago, 1974, chiropractors were jailed for practicing medicine without a license. However, Idaho was the 4th state to license Chiropractic in 1904. The legal battles provided a requirement for all future chiropractors to complete the required doctorate in Chiropractic degree and be licensed primary care physicians. Presently there are 17 chiropractic schools in the country. All of which teach the core chiropractic techniques, however additional techniques vary. There are dozens of techniques developed to adjust the spine. The technique in which the chiropractor uses is usually what they have found to be the most effective for their patients, or most effective on them as a patient. Regardless of the technique, they all have the same purpose.
The adjustment is done by the hand or instrument
to remove nerve interference, created by a misalignment of the spine or extremity. The misalignment of the spine decreases the brains ability to communicate with the major organs, muscles, tissues, glands, and even cells. Only the weight of a dime (15mm Hg pressure) on one of those nerves, decreases the function by 50%. Although this is why chiropractic is such a big part of the wellness model, most patients still seek it out for the effectiveness of pain removal. However pain is just the alarm telling us there is something wrong. We remove what is wrong (nerve interference) and the body gets rid of the need for the defensive mechanism. A great example of this is the leading cause of missed worked and work comp injury, low back pain. In fact the total cost of LBP is more than $50 billion per year. Research has shown Chiropractic to be the most effective treatment for LBP. There is research that is less well known showing chiropractic is 2-3 x’s more effective in producing wellness as it is in decreasing LBP and neck pain. Again going back to the point, chiropractic removes the interference to establish a proper functioning nervous system, so the body can heal, mend, and repair itself the way it was designed. We don’t treat pain, or “cure” pathologies. That is the job of the best diagnostician, and pharmacist I’ve ever seen….the Human Body. We provide the environment to allow that to happen. The question still remains, if chiropractors have the same purpose, why are they all so different? Although they may have different techniques, some chiropractors also focus on different specialties. This is no different than in the medical profession which has general practitioners and specialists. Within the Chiropractic profession locally, we have many specialists. Since the adjustment helps the entire body to function better from infants to the elderly, it is often narrowed down in some offices to particular groups. For example, there are Chiropractors who specialize in kids with developmental issues (ADD, autism, etc.), Chiropractors who do nutritional Injection therapies, Chiropractors who work with muscular injuries of athletes, or Chiropractors who focus on TMJ disorders. There are even chiropractors who focus on certain areas of the spine, such as the upper neck. This enables patients to receive quality care for the needs of the individual. It also allows the Chiropractic profession to work together and refer to one another when the patients’ needs extend beyond a particular offices’ primary focus. If choosing the right Chiropractor is an area you need help with, please feel free to contact me for direction or advice on making this decision.

The changing of the seasons can wreak havoc on our skin.
Just as we take time daily to carefully dress appropriately for current weather conditions, so should we also take great care in protecting our skin. After all, it is our largest organ and we should give it the respect it deserves. Here are 5 tips to keeping your skin healthy and protected in the coming months: #1. As appealing as it is to spend long periods of time in a hot shower or bath to warm up on a cold day, high water temperature is very damaging to the skin. Hot water can severely dry out even the most healthy skin among us. Make sure to bathe in warm water, get down to business, get out, and pat dry quickly. Vigorous towel drying can further irritate the skin. #2. Cleanse with a mild cleanser that is free of artificial ingredients such as color and/or fragrance. Products that contain artificial ingredients can cause mild to severe irritation to the skin. And never, ever end your day without cleansing away make-up and daily grime before bed. #3. Men and women alike can relate to shaving inflammation. The easiest ways to circumvent this problem are to change your razor blades often, use a shaving lotion or gel, and to shave in the direction of hair growth. #4. One of the best preventive measures to take when protecting the skin from cold weather elements is to moisturize, moisturize, moisturize. As with your cleanser, your moisturizer should be free of artificial ingredients as much as possible. Don’t be afraid to use a heavier moisturizer at night if necessary. Nighttime is a great time to really heal and treat the skin. Don’t forget your lips either. Resist the urge to lick your lips and be diligent in applying a natural lip balm or Vitamin E. #5. Lastly, let’s not forget sunscreen. Sun protection is just as important in the fall/winter as it is during the spring/summer. Apply sunscreen daily to exposed areas such as face, neck, and hands. Reapply throughout the day as needed according to outdoor exposure. And remember… hydration is just as important in the winter months as it is during the heat of summer. So drink your water!

How long have you been a personal trainer/health coach?
I started in the fitness industry about 18 years ago, after receiving a Master’s Degree in Exercise Physiology from the University of Idaho. Since then, it’s been my passion to help people experience a healthy and active life that allows them to accomplish all of their dreams. I feel very fortunate to have gathered so many friends through the years that have worked very hard at being healthier for themselves and the world around them.

So you’ve seen a lot of fads come and go. Why do you think that certain fitness and weight loss fads end up fizzling out?
Because they can’t stand the test of time. Most fads fail because they are designed to be a quick fix for a problem that needs a permanent, long-term solution. There is nothing magic about gaining weight, so there is nothing magic about losing it! If you want to change something about your health or appearance, you have to change something about the way you are living. You can’t keep doing the same things and expect different results. If you don’t make permanent changes while you are losing weight, the weight loss will not be permanent. Programs and products that promise quick results will always lead you quickly back to where you started.
You offer a group weight loss program for woman. What are the advantages to group fitness and weight loss programs over one-on-one programs?
I’ve helped several people lose weight throughout my one-on-one personal training career, but I have never seen weight loss success like I’ve experienced since forming this amazing group for women. There is nothing more powerful than regularly being around other people who share common goals and struggles. These ladies get together up to 6 times per week for workouts, encouragement, support and friendship. The group format provides accountability and direction to make the required changes for permanent weight loss. I’m so proud of the work that they’ve done together as a group. Several have lost between 50-100 pounds and I am confident that they would not have had the same experience training with me one-on-one. They all needed each other to accomplish their goals!

What are your top 3 tips for anybody who wants to improve their health and their quality of life?
1. Be mindful and educated about what you put in your mouth. It takes work, but what could be more important than accomplishing your life goals! Food is the fuel that you need, so you should feed your body top quality nutrition in the right amounts. Don’t let emotions get in the way! 2. Move as much as possible. Don’t allow the conveniences of our current world to keep you from moving more throughout your day. Get out of your seat whenever you can and find ways to make it fun! 3. Don’t let stress control you! Disconnect from electronics regularly, meditate, exercise, get good sleep and find time to do what you like!

simply natural solutions. by Sierra
Baking Soda & Avocado Oil are two simple ingredients that are effective for facial cleansing and moisturizing. Make a thin paste with a dime-sized amount of baking soda and water and gently massage onto damp skin in circular motions, avoiding the delicate skin around your eyes. Rinse with clear water and warm a pea-sized drop of avocado oil between your hands. Apply to damp skin and massage until evening distributed. Oily skin types may prefer to use jojoba oil in place of avocado. This is a wonderful method for removing makeup residue and can be used 3-4 times per week.
Dry Brushing.
Is a technique used to stimulate the lymphatic system, aiding in detoxification and the elimination of cellulite. This energizing daily practice is best just before bathing and promotes radiant, smooth skin. Using a natural bristle brush, make gentle strokes from your arms and legs towards your heart. Dry brushing is especially effective for preventing ingrown hairs from shaving and waxing.
Are you ready to receive a lot of compliments? All you need is a fresh, ripe papaya! When used as a mask, the natural enzymes in papaya pulp can gently break down the outer layer of dry, dead skin to reveal a radiant glow underneath. Slice and skin a section of the fruit to yield 2-3 TBS and use a fork to mash it into a pulp. Use a towel to shield your clothing as this mask can be runny. Liberally apply the mashed papaya to your face, then relax for 1020 minutes. To remove, wet your face with warm water and use a soft, damp wash cloth to gently wipe away the pulp. Follow up with avocado or jojoba oil to moisturize and protect, and smile as the compliments start to roll in! Pro tip: An average papaya can make up to 8 masks, so invite your best friends over to indulge in an evening of pampering together!

Beauty From the Inside Out: Include essential fatty acids from flax seed oil, fish oil and black currant seed oil in your diet to reduce inflammation and strengthen cell membranes, smoothing skin’s appearance.

Homemade Sugar Scrubs are a great way to polish your body
by removing dry, dull skin. Combine the juice from one lemon, ½ cup sugar and ¼ cup coconut oil to make a luxurious, spa-worthy scrub. During a shower or bath, use a generous amount to massage over skin in a circular motion and rinse after a moment. Take care to wash your bath tub or shower afterwards- the coconut oil can make things quite slippery!

Bob’s dad is 94 years old. Bob had to quit his job years
How The Bennett House Brings Freedom and Dignity To Aging Families Written by Miles Torres
ago to take care of his aging parents full time - a job he wasn’t ready for in many ways and one he struggled with to ensure their well being. “Before I started taking care of them full time I’d take food to them during the day. I’d deliver it and then come back a couple of days later and the food was untouched in the refrigerator. Forgotten.” said Bob about his parents. “It made me worry I felt like I had no other choice than to be with them all the time. And then one day they hit a tree with the car, a tree that actually prevented them from going into the lake. That’s when I knew caring for them would be my new full-time job.” Bob’s dad suffers from dementia that leaves him mostly speechless and dependent on Bob as his caregiver - 7 days a week, 24 hours a day. As an inexperienced caregiver Bob struggled with finding balance in his own life. Gone were the days of going to a movie, out to dinner with friends, or enjoying north Idaho lakes. He was with his dad all day, all night, shackled to the needs of his ailing father and feeling isolated.
An Aging Community In Need
Bob’s story is a very common story played out in thousands of homes in Idaho. Aging parents with memory loss issues, dementia or Alzheimer’s, or seniors that have high supervision needs often depend on their adult children to fill the gap where extended care is needed. Many adult children lack the time or the financial resources to provide full-time care for their parents and often face difficult choices and sacrifice. Enter Bennett House - A modest, comfortable Coeur d’Alene home modified to care for up to 12 seniors during the day so that their adult children or care providers can have personal time for themselves and to work. Rick Bennett started Bennett House after he had to take care of his mom for 4 years - a lot of that full-time, and with many of the same worries and obstacles that Bob had. “I could never really relax. I was always ready for something. Eventually it was the final call I got from the police saying they have my mom. She’d often go driving and get lost, so I had to take her license and, just like that, she was dependent on me and I was a caregiver.” The Bennett House is kind of a special place. Certainly not what I was expecting when I walked in, and by the time I left, it had changed some of my preconceived notions of what “adult daycare” 42
sep | oct 2014
can actually be. Keeping in mind that this is a private home full of seniors with limited memory and social capacity - there they all were talking to each other like friends, laughing, playing cards and enjoying lunch. None of this is a surprise to Rick Bennett who says he sees this level of activity, daily. “Bob’s dad and another one of our daily guests, both of whom can’t remember what happened two seconds ago, discovered each other one day, somehow found a connection and started playing cribbage. They play for hours and they love it. The social stimulation and mental activity benefits all of our guests tremendously and the level of activity around here is often quite high.” At a cost starting around $10 an hour to drop off a parent for expert supervision at a small, intimate facility with lunch, volunteers to love on them, an RN on staff, TVs to watch and fish tanks to enjoy, it almost seems too good to be true. But in fact and as I witnessed, Bennett House is providing a much needed daytime daycare service for seniors and their families who need respite for a day, or every weekday.
Building Family
Nicole’s mom is 91 and a regular daytime guest at Bennett House. As Nicole shared her story I could see, and physically watch the stress ease off her shoulders. Nicole, too, struggled with caring for her parent because she could never really leave the house. “We’d try to leave the house and mom would think we had left her in a more permanent sense, even after just a couple of minutes. She’d panic and it was very hard for all of us.” Amanda, Nicole’s daughter moved out from Montana to help care for her grandma. “Grandma loves it here” she says with a smile. “She loves the fish tank, and she’s become sharper. It’s allowed me to bond with her and start a relationship. We’ve never had that.” Bennett House opened in February of 2014 and currently has openings for new daytime, senior guests. If you’re the child of an elderly parent whose care demands much of your time, it’s worth contacting Rick Bennett to see how Bennett House can bring some much needed rest for you, and quality time for your parent.

SENIOR PROFILE
93 Year Old Dickie Jumel There’s only one word to describe Dickie Jumel, a 93 yr old CDA resident and healthy living advocate, and that word is, “BALL OF TALKING FIRE.” Dickie has a lot to share about life, as she should. A dance instructor, farm hand, lecturer, health foodie, social activist, fly fisherwoman and military wife, Dickie has learned a thing or two about living a solidly long life. First, Dickie looks years, (years), younger than she is. Light on her feet and long on sharing wisdom, she shared some of her top secret secrets for not just living a long life, but also enjoying that long life. There is no way (at all) we can share everything, but here are a few of the things she bets on the most.

#1. Learn the rules of nutrition, especially
how the body processes foods to balance your body’s alkaline levels. If you can master this then things are already looking up. (Check WebMD for info on body PH).
#2. Read the book “Life Extension” by Durk Pearson and Sandy Shaw. (Originally printed in the early 80s it’s considered a classic). #3.
Exercise your mind. Not only provide daily mental activity such as reading or challenging mind games, but also keep a positive attitude. (Dickies’ mind is just plain sharp. Clearly it’s worked for her).
#4.
“Rotate your foods.” Don’t just eat oatmeal every morning (guilty), but switch it up and eat fruits, yogurt, and supplements. (Dickie said she takes most of her supplements in powder form - aloe vera, glutamine, magnesium, vitamin C, all mixed up in juice). Whatever you do, see your doctor first.
Continued Independent Living Living Longer in the Home You Love
Services Include: • Meal preparation • Personal Care Assistance • Light housekeeping • Errands & Shopping • Companionship
#5. Drink black coffee. Dickie has had black coffee for years
and swears by it. We’ve all heard the studies about the benefits of black coffee (cya later 20 ounce mocha) and Dickie cringes at the thought of drinking anything but black.
#6.
Juice fresh. She has juiced for years and even made her kids juice. Her daily drink for most of her life was a mix of organic carrot and celery. We support this.
#7. Lastly - give your bod a good cleanse twice a year. Basically, a colonic. A flush. Again, see your doctor.
Keep in mind that you should always see your doctor before you make any big dietary changes. Keep it safe and keep it fun.
