SCOPE

01 Mondomarine brokerage agreement Northrop & Johnson and Italian shipyard Mondomarine have signed a global brokerage agreement for the sale and marketing of all newbuild Mondomarine yachts. Northrop & Johnson’s successful marketing platform is the keystone to the agreement. Mondomarine’s new projects will be listed with Philip Bell in Fort Lauderdale, Jonathan Browne in Antibes and Bart Kimman in Hong Kong. The brokers, Northrop & Johnson’s global marketing team and Mondomarine will work together to create comprehensive marketing plans for each yacht in order to facilitate efficient sales. “I’m delighted to be teaming up with Mondomarine,” says Northrop & Johnson Sales Broker Philip Bell. “The team and I are looking forward to working with this impressive builder throughout the coming boat shows, as well as integrating the yachts into the sales industry. Mondomarine has an exciting lineup of motor yacht concepts ranging from 30 to 74 meters; with several yachts already under construction, our focus is to assist in building upon this success. Mondomarine is an established and secure facility. Coupled with its attractive pricing, the brand is an extremely strong contender for owners considering Italian luxury yacht manufacturers.” Since opening its doors as Cantieri Navali Campenella in 1915, the company has delivered 62 yachts. In 2013, Alessandro Falciai and Roberto Zambrini acquired the company, now called Mondomarine, which has built 20 yachts under the new ownership. It also has sold 20 yachts larger than 40 meters during the last nine years. “We all are very happy about this [global brokerage agreement] with Northrop & Johnson,” says Mondomarine co-owner and CEO Roberto Zambrini. “Today, Mondomarine is doing great; we are delivering top-quality products and have achieved impressive sales records. We have a leading position in the EU and Middle East markets and now we are ready for the demanding challenges of the American and Asian markets, where we could not find a better partner than Northrop & Johnson. Mondomarine and Northrop & Johnson share the same philosophies; we both have young and motivated teams that provide the most precise and effective service to our clients.”

SPOTLIGHT FIONA MAURESO Q What is your background within the yachting industry and how did you come to be a charter broker? A After graduating from university, I worked very briefly as crew on a 40-meter motor yacht in Monaco, but soon decided that I was not suited for life at sea. However, thanks to this brief experience, I developed

what proved to be a lifelong passion for the yachting industry. For a few years, I worked as a translator, interpreter and teacher, but couldn’t settle. I knew I had to find my way back to yachting. In 1986, I was lucky enough to be hired by a brokerage agency in Antibes as assistant to a sales broker. After several years learning about the construction, sale and purchase of superyachts, I decided to concentrate on yacht charter. I enjoy the matchmaking side of my job, finding the ideal yacht for each client, and making sure that every aspect of the charter is perfect.

What is your best advice to a first-time yacht charterer? Don’t be afraid to ask questions! The answers your broker gives you will help you crystallize your ideas. This, in turn, will allow the broker to recommend yachts and itineraries to suit your personal requirements. Also, allow your broker to ask you questions; listen to any advice he or she offers you. Brokers know the yachts and the destinations; once they know what you are looking for, they will be able to recommend ideal matches.

Since opening in April 2010, Marina Bay Sands has clinched a host of awards for both its excellent facilities and excellence in service. This state-of-the-art luxury hotel and marina offers more than 60 exceptional dining choices for guests to enjoy, including restaurants owned by celebrity chefs such as Mario Batali, Daniel Boulud, Wolfgang Puck, Tetsuya Wakuda, David Thompson, Gordon Ramsay and Singapore’s own Justin Quek. For some of the best local Singaporean cuisine, Chef Justin Quek presents Sky on 57. (01) The highest spot at Marina Bay Sands, Sky on 57 is located on the 57th floor of the Sands SkyPark Tower 1, which offers guests incredible views as they enjoy their meals. (04) The ambience is laidback, contemporary chic; you can spend a full day here enjoying the amenities. Open from 7 a.m. to midnight daily, Sky on 57 serves everything from breakfast to lunch to high tea and dinner.

04

Joshua Zinder Architecture + Design created the flowing, modern, dynamic space, which provides uninhibited views of the Singapore skyline and beyond. Upon entering the 12,000-squarefoot restaurant, guests are greeted in a bar/lounge zone. (03) The main dining space seats 150 and has four private areas for guests to enjoy. (02) Ninety additional seats for alfresco dining are located on the terrace, which offers both ocean and city views. The keystone to Sky on 57, despite its incredible views and impressive ambience, is the cuisine. From a young age, Chef Justin Quek (05) tickled his palate with his favorite flavors: hot, sour, salty and sweet — the quintessential qualities of the local fare. Quek has meticulously crafted the menus of Sky on 57 around these flavors, reinterpreting them in modern and exciting ways. (06) The contemporary Asian menu highlights traditional Singaporean favorites, such as Maine Lobster Hokkien Mee, Grilled Kagoshima Wagyu Beef, Wok-fried Asian Black Pepper Lobster and Baked Miso Cod with Ginger and Lime Butter, and delivers the dishes with a flare all their own. Quek is known for adding Singapore to a foodie’s must-visit list. This award-winning chef showcases creative and tantalizingly unique dishes that you won’t soon forget. Other menu-must-haves include Justin Quek’s signature Foie Gras Xiao Long Bao, the Lobster “Marco 06 Polo,” complete with a homemade XO sauce, and Asian Dumplings with Goose Liver. Finish your delightful meal with the resturant’s signature Macaroons, which are made with Pandan and Gula Java. (07)

A barrage of innovative components aboard cutting-edge yachts can make it difficult for buyers to get excited about more traditional concepts — those that aren’t outfitted with swimming pools, hybrid drives and foldout balconies. Yachts are a complicated, customized and expensive part of a luxury lifestyle, so there is much to be gained by shifting focus to the less flashy aspects, features and expectations. When you stop to consider that the yacht will be operated and enjoyed in remote locations by an often changing and limited number of crew, simplification often yields more user satisfaction than any other design element. In fact, it can be said that perfecting a formula to effectively balance the operation and reliability of a yacht is a fundamentally important consideration and goal in every aspect of yachting.

Albert Hakvoort purchased the eponymous shipyard, located in Monnickendam, Holland, in 1919. For nearly a century, the Hakvoort family and its remarkably skilled workers have been perfecting the concepts and construction of its yachts. Though the shipyard is now producing 200 foot superyachts, REVELRY is the culmination of nearly 100 years of mastering the grandscheme design of the modern-day “pocket mega yacht.”

REVLERY was designed and constructed to withstand decades of use and abuse on on the world’s oceans. Triedand-true technology and brands were used throughout to assure her reliability, long range and safety, regardless of sea condition or port of call. For example, her derated Caterpillar engines have only 600 horsepower, but provide a generous transoceanic range of 3,800 nautical miles at When the 127-foot Hakvoort motor yacht REVELRY 10.5 knots. There is nothing fancy about this propulsion, (ex-SNOWBIRD) recently sold to her second owner, the buyers considered it paramount that the yacht be extremely but rather there is elegance in its reliability, low-decibel readings and complete lack of vibration underway. She has capable, proven in its reliability and simple in its mission a 26-foot beam and eight-foot draft, which not only makes and operation. The combination of a well-respected her very stable and seaworthy, but also allows her to access Dutch shipyard, traditional propulsion, steel hull, many cruising areas, such as The Bahamas, that larger manageable size and relatively reasonable operational budget all contributed to these primary goals. Her owners yachts are too big and deep to enjoy. Albert Hakvoort’s wanted a tool to enjoy the culture and environment of each vision of perfecting the world cruiser, along with the rules and oversight of Lloyd’s Classification, mean REVELRY’s cruising destination, focusing more on what was outside crew can focus on ensuring the owners are enjoying their the yacht rather than what was inside. journey rather than worrying about technical problems and cruising restrictions on a daily basis. 02

04

Having said that, REVELRY does not look like an old, outdated yacht from generations ago. She was fortunate to be styled by Cor D. Rover Designs, which gave her a very modern, aggressive look. The inside was designed by Michela Reverberi to complement the beautifully crafted joinery in bookend-matched teak and a darkly stained mahogany sole. Originally owned by an art aficionado, the yacht was well publicized for its incredible modern art collection, much of which remains on the boat today with its new owner. The style and feel throughout is relaxed yet refined, which allows the owner to live comfortably or entertain formally as the occasion requires. Thanks to the bright interior and the yacht’s large windows, one never has the feeling of being trapped indoors. Another advantage of the windows: Incredible views from almost anywhere inside the yacht.

05

Functionally, REVELRY has a traditional five-stateroom layout with an on-deck master, as you one would expect to see on many yachts today. The use of a large garage for watersports toys allows the crew to keep the decks clear for owner and guest use, particularly the teak-covered sundeck, which has a Jacuzzi, sunpads, chaise longues and a service bar. As SNOWBIRD, she was a very successful charter yacht and her new owners wanted to continue that legacy. When yachts change hands, many often wonder what’s changed on board. On REVELRY, the list is very short. Once she completed her flawless five-year Lloyd’s special survey, a few pieces of art were exchanged, and new name boards that more accurately reflect the general atmosphere on board were installed. Otherwise there was little room for improvement on REVELRY, which in the end embodies her new owner’s idea of the perfect yacht. She has completed her first trips and is ready for many more successful adventures and happy guests for years to come.

“Not all those who wander are lost.” With
the capability to go farther from home and the more traditional cruising grounds than ever before, many yacht owners and charterers are seizing the opportunity to explore the Earth’s great oceans. One of the newly favored destinations is, not surprisingly, one of the world’s most beautiful. Known to many as “God’s Own Country,” New Zealand offers scenery beyond compare. Also dubbed, “Paradise in the Pacific,” the country encompasses everything from tropical beaches to sky-high mountains and everything in between. The adventurous at heart will fall in love with the land of the Kiwis — the colloquial name for New Zealand natives. This seemingly tiny nation spans a great distance from Cape Reinga in the north to Stewart Island in the south. The north island of New Zealand boasts a warm climate with strong sunshine. Cruise here to find stunning sandy islands with breathtaking beaches lapped by crystal-clear waters. The south island of New Zealand is rugged with dramatic coastal cliffs plunging into the sea. The climate here is extreme and changes rapidly. Yachts visiting the deep southern regions will be treated to views of glacial fjords, including Milford Sound and Doubtful Sound. Even if the weather takes a turn for the stormy, the fjords come alive in the rain as thundering waterfalls pour from lofty precipices, which is a spectacular sight guests won’t soon forget. There are five main regions of New Zealand to visit during your yacht charter: Auckland, Northland, Coromandel, Nelson and Marlborough Sounds and Southland (Milford Sound). Auckland is known as the City of Sails. Its unique waterfront position, with ocean access, encourages yachts and boats to visit. From the America’s Cup races to the Louis Vuitton Pacific Series, Auckland has been part of sailing’s most prestigious events. In addition to its yachting ties, cosmopolitan city offers high-end shopping and five-star restaurants — waterfront dining is a must while in town.

Once you’ve had enough of the city life, head for the Hauraki Gulf. More than 50 islands await your exploration; the most famous of these is Rangitoto Island. Climb to the top of its volcanic peak for breathtaking views. If you fancy a beach day, Waiheke Island makes a good choice. In addition to its stunning sands, the island has many restaurants and vineyards to discover. Finally, nature lovers will fall head over heels for Tiritiri Matangi Island. This wildlife sanctuary is the perfect place to get back to nature. While in the Hauraki Gulf area, keep your eyes peeled for the vast array of sea life — including dolphins and whales — that calls the gulf its home. The luxurious Northland region of New Zealand is home to lavish lodges and mountainside golf courses, including Kauri Cliffs Lodge in Matauri Bay. Fishermen will enjoy dropping a line in the Bay of Islands, which comprises more than 150 islands of secluded coves and stunning scenery. Russell and Whangaroa are two of the largest fishing ports in the Northland area. The natural wonders, including protected tropical rainforests and marine reserves, of the Coromandel Peninsula will breathe magic into your adventure. Visit Hot Water Beach, which offers hot springs and a cave system linking Cathedral Cove to Mare’s Leg cove. Dive enthusiasts will be tempted to take a peek under the sea near the Mercury and Alderman Islands, which lie off the coast of Coromandel. Here you’ll find abundant reef systems of black coral and deep sea drop offs. With underwater visibility of more than 30 meters, it’s not to be missed. Cave diving also is a possibility.

According to Maori (the indigenous people of New Zealand) legend, Marlborough has provided safe harbor for sailors for centuries. This region is home to deep bays and beautiful beaches fringed by “bush.” Sea life thrives here; often you’ll see pods of dolphins and seals frolicking in the inlets and coves. Much like Nelson, the area’s fertile soil and temperate climate offer the perfect conditions for growing grapes. Marlborough is internationally renowned as the best region for sauvignon blanc. Oenophiles visiting Marlborough may never want to leave. Southland may be New Zealand’s most majestic region with its diverse geography of lush rainforest, green farmlands and sky-high precipices. Fiordand, with its snowy mountains and flowing waterfalls, begs to be discovered. Kayaking, diving and hiking are the perfect means by which to explore the region. Visit Stewart Island and Rakiura National Park, which is home to the Kiwi — New Zealand’s indigenous flightless bird and the namesake of its people. Here the night sky comes alive with the Southern Cross and Milky Way. While visitors often go to New Zealand for the scenery, they often leave talking more about the people;
New Zealand also has been dubbed “the country of open hearts.” If you make the journey, take time to get to know the people. New Zealanders are open and friendly with a reputation for honesty, trustworthiness and warmth. You’ll arrive in New Zealand a visiting adventurer and leave as part of the Kiwi family.

Known for its sunny disposition, Nelson is the perfect place for beach lovers. Abel Tasman National Park’s golden sands beckon. Two other national parks can be found in the Nelson area, all boasting some of the most fertile soil in the country. Not only do flora and fauna thrive here, but there is a vibrant wine culture.

WHILE VISITORS OFTEN GO TO NEW ZEALAND FOR THE SCENERY, THEY OFTEN LEAVE TALKING EVEN MORE ABOUT THE PEOPLE; NEW ZEALAND ALSO HAS BEEN DUBBED “THE COUNTRY OF OPEN HEARTS”

The extensive background checks and safety protocol developed by Sentient does not go unnoticed either. “I do see the difference between [Sentient Jet] and its competitors,” says Berylson. “Sentinet Jet only chooses quality pilots with impeccable safety records. If you start digging, it’s obvious.” Not only does Sentient Jet’s high standards create a lasting impression on its clients, Sentient Jet’s reliability and complete customer care is among some of the best in its industry. “We have 24-7 customer service,” says Collins. “We can procure an aircraft within ten hours guaranteed within a price point; international is promised within 72 hours.” This exceptional attention to customer care is what creates lasting client relationships, which become almost like family. Sentient Jet aims to go above and beyond the to ensure its clients’ needs are met and exceeded. “Sentient always has everything you need on the plane,” says Berylson. “Be it a cake or special food. And it’s always willing to go further. Sentient makes sure to go to our favorite restaurants and stock the plane with food. We chartered a yacht in Italy and loved the food the chef prepared. After our charter, Sentient Jet coordinated to have the chef send more food to the plane for our trip home.” But according to Berylson, perhaps the best example of Sentient Jet’s level of service and attention to detail is this: “My oldest daughter was having her third child in the States and we were in Europe. Sentient Jet had the plane on moment’s notice. The pilots were calling me to get status updates. It’s that kind of thoughtful [detail] that makes the difference.”

These personal touches make flying with Sentient Jet more than just a means of transportation. And it’s not only the level of air service that sets the company apart. Sentient Jet works with 500 commercial airports and approximately 5,000 small airports in the U.S., ensuring its clients can always get where they need to go. “We’re often used when people are looking to fly into places that are hard to get to,” says Collins. “Our clients are very predisposed to the flexibility of private aviation and we will do all we can to guarantee they arrive where and when they need to.” Collins maintains that Sentient Jet will find ways around travel issues. “We will find the closest airport, then shuttle a client via ground transportation; we will charter a helicopter. We will do whatever we have to and we will always go to the last possible solution. That’s part of the relationship.” Berylson agrees. “Other companies don’t have the pull like Sentient Jet. It has a good reputation and when I fly with Sentient, I don’t run into any issues.” People fly private for all types of reasons; Collins maintains that time management — “owning your own time” — is one of the biggest, but when flying private, there are many options. Sentient Jet was the first private aviation company to create a product like its Jet Card, allowing clients to choose flight hours and destinations based on their own wants and needs. “At the end of the day, I think [Sentient Jet] offers a very effective service,” says Berylson. “It’s great on the long-haul flights. Because of what it offers, I’m a very loyal customer.”

“We tend to go to extremes to makes sure people are happy,” says Collins. “Catering is fun and challenging at the same time. One of our clients loves the sushi from a particular restaurant in New York City so we pre-load that onto the plane before he arrives. Another client celebrates closing a new deal with a large pepperoni pizza. As soon as we get the news, the pizza is delivered.” 01

In 1972, Italian fashion designer Stefano Ricci opened the doors to his small factory, which produced only ties and shirts. Today, Stefano Ricci has multiple lines and collections. The brand is internationally renowned for its impressive heritage and strong ties to Stefano Ricci’s homeland, Italy. With 54 boutiques throughout the world, as well as prominent placement in leading luxury stores, such as Harrods in London, Stefano Ricci has come a long way from its humble roots. In 1993, the brand celebrated its 20th anniversary by opening its first boutique in Shanghai. Stefano Ricci has since expanded not only its locations, but also its product lines. The first expansion encompassed small leather goods. Later, Ricci debuted lines of footwear, jackets, sportswear and knitwear in cashmere and silk. Every step forward has strengthened Stefano Ricci’s success.

In an effort to continue this tradition, five years ago Ricci created an apprenticeship program, welcoming novices to work closely with master craftsmen with more than 20 years of experience in order to teach the new recruits about cutting lines, creating seams and all other facets of the craft. This program guarantees Ricci’s production will continue at its highest levels of craftsmanship for years to come. In 2011, Stefano Ricci launched a bespoke line, which works with 15 tailors who handcraft each piece. This custom tailoring allows Ricci to ensure the characteristics of his products, as well as complete quality control from the beginning to the end of the production cycle.

Ricci’s sons Niccolò and Filippo have now joined the team. Ricci named Filippo creative director. 01 Aston Martin DB10 The names James Bond and Aston Martin have gone together like a horse and carriage ever since Ian Fleming first supplied the legendary secret agent with a DBIII in the 1959 novel “Goldfinger.” “The car was from the pool,” wrote Fleming in chapter seven. “Bond had been offered the Aston Martin or the Jaguar 3.4. He had taken the DBIII. Either of the cars would have suited his cover — a well-to-do, rather adventurous young man with a taste for the good, the fast things of life. But the DBIII had the advantage of an up-to-date triptyque, an inconspicuous color, battleship grey, and certain extras, which might or might not come in handy....” But it was the Silver Birch DB5 that Sean Connery’s Bond drove in the 1960s film versions of “Goldfinger” and “Thunderball” that truly cemented the connection between Aston and 007, which has since led to six different examples of the marque’s cars appearing in the various movies — the latest being the DB10 driven by Daniel Craig in the 2015 release, “Spectre.” It’s very unlikely, however, that you’ll see a DB10 on the road — this is the first Aston ever created specifically for a Bond movie. Based on a production V8 Vantage, the DB10 has an entirely bespoke, aluminum body with special lights, wheels, grille and interior trim not used on any other car. The development of the DB10 took more than a year and was carried out in close collaboration with director Sam Mendes. Part of the reason for using the 190-mph V8 Vantage as its basis is, as Aston Martins go, it’s about the simplest car in the range. It also is the lightest and probably the most robust — both important considerations in view of the fact that the DB10 was driven hard and fast in every scene in which it appears. The man at the controls was triple-British-Rally-Champion-turned-officialBond-stunt-driver Mark Higgins, for whom two examples of the 10 DB10s built were specifically adapted with features such as high-performance hand-brake systems, built-in roll cages and, of course, controls for the all important Q-Branch gadgets. Although the DB10 is not destined for production, it is likely that some of the car’s design features will be carried forward to future road-going models. And, although you won’t be able to buy one in to your local Aston showroom, there are plans afoot to offer a DB10 show car for charity early next year. If you fancy being a bidder, keep an eye on astonmartin.com.

02 Rolls-Royce Silver Dawn In my school days, the father of one of my closest friends owned a magnificent Rolls-Royce saloon built in 1951. Painted a striking combination of black and yellow, it was considered a particular rarity due to its uncommon small-boot feature. The model name was Silver Dawn and this particular car had first belonged to the governor of Gibraltar. Just a few weeks ago, my friend sent me an email. It contained an advertisement for his father’s actual car, which, having long been sold out of the family, had turned up on the website of a classic car dealer in Germany, still wearing that distinctive livery. The bizarre aspect of the story lies, however, in the fact that just a few minutes later I also received an email from Rolls-Royce Motor Cars announcing the long-dormant Silver Dawn name was to be revived on an all-new model. It’s rare that Rolls-Royce launches a new model (in the 11-year history of the modern marque, it has created but three: Phantom, Ghost and Wraith) so news of the Silver Dawn’s arrival in early 2016 is worthy of some excitement. The original Silver Dawn, which was produced from 1949 to 1955, was the first Rolls-Royce to feature factory-built bodywork (previous models had all been “coach-built” cars with, essentially, one-off bodies crafted by independent makers). Of all the Silver Dawns built, a mere 28 were in the “drophead” or convertible style, but that is the configuration chosen for the newly revived automobile. At this stage, few details of the 21st century Dawn are available, although it will, of course, be built at the Rolls-Royce factory on the Goodwood estate in England’s West Sussex. And we can safely assume that it will be one of the more, if not most, exquisitely crafted, most elegant and most luxurious “dropheads” on the market.

03 Bentley Flying Spur Beluga The “Flying Spur” name first appeared on a Bentley back in the 1950s when it was chosen for a line of essentially bespoke, four-door saloons with a sporting bent built to order by the celebrated British coachbuilder H.J. Mulliner. The name was revived in 2006 when the rejuvenated Bentley brand, by then under the ownership of Volkswagen Group, sought to attract buyers from the chauffeur-driven executive class with a “stretched” four-door version of the hugely successful Continental GT coupe, which had placed the once-ailing marque well and truly back on the map. With a twin-turbo, six-liter W12 engine under the hood (as used in the GT) the new car certainly offered all the pace any tycoon in a hurry could wish for, with its sub-six-second zero-to-60-mph time and a top speed of more than 170 miles per hour. Last year, however, the “Continental” prefix was dropped from the Flying Spur’s title to coincide with a major makeover, which included the adoption of the smaller, lighter and more efficient four-liter, twin-turbo V8 engine, which debuted in the two-door GT. And, as of this fall, the Flying Spur will become available in a new, premium edition called the “Beluga” — a name that one automatically associates with caviar and, of course, all of its rare and expensive connotations. Available only with the V8 power plant, the Flying Spur Beluga is, essentially, a racier version of the outwardly staid, standard sedan. Much of the transformation has been brought about through the use of stealthy black finishes for the 20-inch wheels, for example, on the radiator grille and inside the cabin where special, piano black veneers make the already luxurious interior seem even more decadently habitable. The traditionally sporting character typical of cars carrying the Flying B logo is further enhanced through the presence of knurled-steel gearshift paddles and contrast stitching to the hand-finished leather upholstery. When the Mulliner Driving Specification is requested, buyers get even larger, 21-inch “Extrovert” road wheels, diamond quilted hides, a knurled gear lever and racecar-style drilled-alloy pedals. Despite the car’s undeniable size, it’s a mean performer thanks to the V8s 500-horsepower output, which enables it to sprint from standstill to 60 miles per hour in 4.9 seconds. Yet it is designed more for crossing continents than racing between the lights — as evinced by its 500-mile fuel range and, of course, that luxurious, Wi-Fi-enabled interior, which is guaranteed to make any journey pass very quickly indeed.

04 BMW 3.0L CSL ‘Hommage’ There are two types of Batmobiles: the one kept in Bruce Wayne’s “bat cave” and driven by his alter-ego Batman and the classic BMW coupe that proved a dominant force in touring car racing during the early 1970s. The latter was built by German tuning house Alpina and was based on BMW’s partly aluminum-bodied, three-liter CSL (L for lightweight) coupe. One of the most striking features of the car was its rear wing, which led to the “Batmobile” nickname, but because a certain number had to be produced in street-legal guise and such wings were not permitted for use on German roads, the cars were supplied with them neatly packed away in the boot. An original CSL with its racing wing still present is highly prized by collectors, and its almost mythical status has now prompted BMW to create what it is calling a homage to the model. Unveiled in May at Italy’s prestigious Villa d’Este Concorso d’Eleganza, this achingly covetable concept car revisits the screaming golf-yellow hue, which was available on the 1970s original. Beyond that, however, it is entirely up-to-the-minute with bodywork made from carbon-fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP), distinctive air deflectors, bulging wheel arches, spoilers to the roof and, of course, the tail. “Air Curtain” and “Air Breather” systems ventilate the wheel housings while emissions are dealt with by a pair of vast, oval-shaped, side-exit exhausts. Under the bonnet there’s a silky smooth sixcylinder engine with electric “e-boost,” while the pared-down interior reflects the car’s lightweight, sporting nature. Again made largely from CFRP, it eschews high-tech entertainment systems in favor of a simple, race-inspired instrument display showing gear position, shifting point, road speed and engine revs. Other race-inspired features include hand-stitched bucket seats, six-point harnesses, a fire extinguisher and two consolemounted, emergency cut-off switches. A special space has even been created in the rear of the transmission tunnel for the storage of a pair of crash helmets. “For BMW designers like us, the BMW 3.0 CSL is a style icon,” says the marque’s head of design, Karim Habib. “Its combination of racing genes and elegance generates an engaging aesthetic that continues to win hearts even today.”There seems little doubt that the design team succeeded, but now the world’s CSL fans want to know if the Hommage concept will actually make it in to production. Judging by the reaction it received at Villa d’Este, BMW shouldn’t have much difficulty selling plenty of “real” versions, so here’s hoping it’s brave enough to go ahead and make them.

NORTHROP & JOHNSON YACHT BROKER DAVID SEAL TAKES US TO TURKEY TO TALK TO THE REVOLUTIONARY YACHT BUILDER ESENYACHT ABOUT TROY, ITS LATEST PROJECT.

There has never been a more interesting time to work in the yachting industry or a more exciting time to buy a new yacht. The number of established yacht builders in business has thinned out in recent years and successful entrepreneurs are entering the market to buy big brand names and, in some cases, to start new ones.

Esen’s passion for racing sailing yachts has been synonymous with his success in business. His companies belong to the Tursen Group and range from industries as diverse as mining and tourism, to energy and investment. With a turnover well in excess of €100 million, Esen has demonstrated a remarkable ability in business; he distracted himself from the pressures of running such With so many changes taking place, a yacht buyer does well a large enterprise by sailing his racing yacht UZMA. to take a good look at the owner behind a shipyard before Eventually, he bought a hull and put together a team of making a decision on the next purchase. The buyer must workers to build a complete yacht. He was so impressed ensure that his investment is in financially safe hands, but with what the skilled workers built that he formed he also may wish to ascertain if the entrepreneur wants to Esenyacht, intent on making a serious contribution to the build a brand and flip it or if he is in for the long haul. superyacht market. My recent trips to Turkey to visit the new Esenyacht shipyard led me to make such an investigation. I had won the central agency contract for its 155-foot sloop TROY and was looking forward to applying the weight of Northrop & Johnson’s impressive marketing machine to promoting the yacht. I knew that when qualified enquiries arrived, there would be understandable concerns about a new shipyard embarking in such an ambitious project; I was keen to meet the driving force behind it.

In my opinion, the arrival of men such as Kadir Esen represents a coming of age in the yachting industry. The founders of many yacht builders tend to be men who were, in the first instance, passionate about yachts and then had to learn to indulge in that passion. Lately, we are seeing a change, men who in the first instance are hugely successful in business now are applying that business acumen to indulge their passions in yachting. This has to be good for the industry.

First of all, let’s address the elephant in the room. When I told colleagues and associates that I was working with “Esenyacht,” I noticed a wry smile cross their faces. The shipyard is accustomed to this reaction; it knows that the name has more than a passing resemblance to a more established brand and the cynical may think that Esenyacht is trying to trade off this. Those naysayers would be wrong. The fact is that Esenyacht is wholly owned by Mr. Kadir Esen, an extremely successful Turkish businessman with an insatiable appetite for yachting and neither the need nor the desire to copy other yacht builders.

Certainly Esen has chosen a very eye-catching yacht to announce its entry to superyacht production. TROY has naval architecture from DYKSTRA and is designed by Tim Saunders. Although she shall inevitably be compared with Perini Navi and Alloy Yachts, her aggressive, contemporary lines set her apart from any other yacht on the water.

Her bridge windows lean forward in a way that is reminiscent of expedition ships and military vessels, but when combined with the low profile and bold edges of the superstructure, they harmonize to give the impression of a yacht leaping out of the water, impatient to surge forward with the power of her more than 2,000 square meters of sails. She may be compared to other yachts, but she certainly won’t be mistaken for them. A glass panel runs through the centerline of the sundeck, bathing the salon below with additional sunlight. On the generous aft deck, and still along the centerline, a large hatch is fitted into the deck to allow private access to the master stateroom. Aft and in line with this is a large Jacuzzi tub. This ensemble of features provides a sense of symmetry that enhances the yacht’s poise and posture to give a feeling of order and balance.

Meanwhile, a master craftsman from Murano has been contracted to sculpt a Trojan horse’s head from Murano glass for the yacht. Artist Lucio Bubacco was born and raised on the island that has become famous for its glasswork; Bubacco has established himself as somewhat of a guru in the field. The horse’s head is an intricate weave of colored glass in which a Trojan soldier is visible. Is all of this really necessary? Perhaps not, but it is a crystalclear indication that Esenyacht wants the world to sit up and pay attention when it releases the finished product to the public. The yard means business, and it is here to stay.

The artwork and attention to aesthetics on TROY are not just a smoke-and-mirror act to cover up any issues in quality or engineering. A walk around the shipyard reveals a serious commitment to using top-quality suppliers; an array of international experts are involved in the project. When Esen decided to build the 63-meter carbon-fiber The name TROY was well studied, too. The ancient site of mast itself, it established a whole new company: Esen Troy is located in Turkey at a distance of about 400 miles from the shipyard. One of the most spectacular features of this yacht is the artwork. The smoked-oak panels that adorn the main corridor have been decked in gold leaf; an artist has been commissioned to engrave a wonderfully intricate scene of the tale of Troy into the gold. Every time I visit the shipyard, I think the work must be finished, as it’s so beautiful, and every time I return a little more has been added or refined, and it looks even better.

For the sails, Esen turned to Jesper Banks of Elvstrom Sails. A two-time Olympic Gold medal winner and sailor whose experience stretches from lasers to America’s Cup yachts, Banks now owns Elvstrom and is a regular visitor to Esenyacht. He has engineered the sails specifically for TROY and is enjoying working with the Bodrum-based shipyard. “I have a really open dialogue with the guys at Esen,” said Banks. “It’s a really pleasant way to work in the industry...like working with friends.” The sails are actually just about the only main component outsourced by Esenyacht. The steel hull was made in house, as was the carbon-fiber composite superstructure. Behind the main construction facility is an area dedicated to cabinetry. For this, too, Esenyacht formed a separate company, Esenyacht Furniture. This area of Turkey is rich with talented craftsmen who are remarkably skilled in woodworking. Although many of them learned their trade working on the more simple local Gullets, they seized the opportunity that came from a larger budget and design brief to “up their game” and produce furniture that would not look out of place on a Northern European superyacht. Smoked oak, ebony, cedar and walnut combine with a selection of other precious materials to give a feeling of elegant luxury throughout TROY. Esenyacht has disregarded the traditional rush to complete TROY for this year’s Monaco Yacht Show, opting instead to take its time to build a yacht that will be seen as a benchmark of quality for future projects. It is planning to deliver TROY early in 2016, and, as the yacht is taking shape and reaching completion, the attention of the yachting press and potential buyers is intensifying.

06

For now, the young company is using a production facility in the industrial area of Bodrum and it’s admittedly a little cramped. A visit there involves moving through a labyrinth of offices and viewing the yacht in a shed that had to be modified to accommodate the vessel’s length. The circumstances remind me of a young Gordon Ramsay producing wonderful food from a cramped Parisian kitchen, but yearning for a greater arena from which to show off his skills. For Esenyacht, that arena is soon to arrive, as Kadir Esen has already invested in a sizeable piece of land on which he intends to build a state-of-the-art construction facility. There he can host potential clients and build his brand. The project is still subject to local planning permission, but this is a man who does not let anything stand in his way.

DESIGN TRENDS C O L U M B U S YA C H T S WORDS DAVID SEAL It would be impossible to write about the exciting new Liberty range produced by Columbus Yachts without sparing a few words about the city in which they are built: Naples, a city that inspired poets and song writers, who gazed across the bay at the exquisitely beautiful Sorrento and watched over the bewitching island of Capri. So many words have been written about “Bella Napoli,” but the city is best summed up by the German novelist Van Goethe, who said “Vedi Napoli e poi muori,” which translates to “See Naples, and die.”

After more than 20 years of living and working in Italy, I have come to appreciate the subtle differences between the various areas of the country. In the industrial north, the fashion industry sits comfortably side by side with sport car manufacturers. The obsession to look good is overriding. The Italians call this “La Bella Figura” and, while it is a pleasure to behold, the preoccupation sometimes comes at the expense of the selfdeprecating humor that Brits like me are more accustomed to. Perhaps this was part of the reason that my trip to Naples to visit the Columbus Yachts shipyard came as a breath of fresh air from the starchy atmosphere that sometimes permeates the north.

Naples represents everything that foreigners hope to find in Italy; a vibrant city lying in the shadow of Vesuvius — the very air is alive with energy. Music plays in the bustling streets, cab drivers weave in and out of chaotic traffic as they engage their passengers in animated conversation and merchants trade on street corners and in hidden piazzas. The food in Naples simply is some of the best in the world. Genuine, tasty, healthy ingredients are cooked with passion and served with the kind of sincere and expansive hospitality that has made the city famous even in its own country.

It was an exciting meeting. Despite our different backgrounds, we found an instantaneous synergy in our recognition of these yachts’ great potential.

Constructed entirely from aluminum, yachts in the Liberty range were conceived to offer the best possible yachting experience for owners and guests. Both Pino and I have spoken to yacht owners who found that their yachts had internal areas that were seldom used, but they did not offer enough deck space. At the end of the day, most of the fun that can be had on a yacht is found on deck — in the daylight at least. For this reason, Pino This vibrant and exuberant backdrop provides the context in which we commissioned the design of a series of yachts that explores and exploits find the Palumbo shipyard, located in an imposing position in the port of the full potential of the deck space while also allowing sensational views Naples. The 35th running of the America’s Cup will take place in June 2017 in Bermuda. Like the last competition, teams will use foiling catamarans, although a little smaller at 62-feet long, but just as challenging to sail and just as exciting to watch. Challenging for or defending the America’s Cup, the oldest sporting trophy in the world, has always been a pursuit for the very wealthy. However, in recent decades, those costs had begun to really spiral out of control. It is rumored that Larry Ellison spent $400 million to challenge for and ultimately win the Cup from Alinghi in Valencia, Spain, in 2010, in a trimaran; rumors say a further $300 million was spent in 2013 to successfully defend the Cup in San Francisco. It had become clear that if you had the money and the inclination, you could “buy” the Cup by simply outspending your rivals, hiring the best talent in designers and sailors, using the most exotic materials to build several boats, and testing to find the strongest, lightest and fastest yacht. But in 2017, things will be different. New rules are in place to limit the cost and even the playing field, which, in turn, has and will encourage more teams to take up the challenge.

So far Team Artimis Racing from Sweden, Land Rover BAR from Great Britain, Emirates Team New Zealand, Groupama Team France, and Team Japan have signed up to challenge the defender, Oracle Team USA. Certainly, Team Artemis Racing is one to watch and renowned watchmaker Ulysse Nardin has taken notice, teaming up with the Swedish Challenger for the 35th America’s Cup as an official partner. Watchmaking and high-performance sailing both have exceptional heritages filled with rich inspiration; they utilize innovative technology to the highest possible standards. Together with Ulysse Nardin, Team Artemis Racing aims to employ its exceptional prowess to bring home the Cup in 2017. “It is an honor for Ulysse Nardin to enter into a cooperation with Artemis Racing,” says CEO of Ulysse Nardin Patrik Hoffmann. “Ulysse Nardin’s history of navigating the sea paired with the DNA of innovation and technology, which is firmly established in both companies, makes this partnership a perfect match.

When meeting the Artemis engineers, technicians and craftsmen at their base in San Francisco, I quickly realized that the spirit of passion and innovation is the driving force behind this extraordinary team.” The man at the helm of Team Artemis Racing is Manager and Skipper Iain Percy. “The America’s Cup is synonymous with style, technology, design and prestige, however the new breed of foiling-wing sailed catamarans is asking far more from us as designers, engineers and sailors than ever before,” he says. “This cycle and the future of our sport is about original thinking, developing new materials, and pushing the boundaries of what we understand about yacht design and racing. With Ulysse Nardin, we are lucky to have found a partner that shares our values, our passion for teamwork, our desire to innovate and an ambition to lead in our respective fields. We look forward to sharing this adventure together over the next three years and beyond.” Percy is a double Olympic and multiple world champion; one of the most talented and successful sailors in the world. He will be integral in leading the charge for Team Artemis Racing in this exciting upcoming series.

In this 2017 round, smaller, one-design AC45-class cats will engage in a series of regattas in several different venues throughout the next two years. The first of these World Series events took place in Portsmouth in the United Kingdom from July 23—26, 2015; three races were held. August saw three more races in Gothenburg, Sweden, the native land of Team Artemis Racing, from August 27—30, 2015 and Bermuda will host three more races October 16—18, 2015. Another six to eight venues will be announced for next year and then the teams begin to practice in the AC62s, which will be launched early 2017. Points accrued in the AC45 series of races will count towards the Louis Vuitton elimination series. This is all quite convoluted, but for those of you who would like to read the rules, you can find them on the America’s Cup site.

THE CUP WAS RENAMED THE AMERICA’S CUP IN HONOR OF THE WINNING YACHT, NOT THE COUNTRY

There is a handy app that you can download to your phone for further clarification and to keep up to date. The races will be streamed live on the official website and will be found on the America’s Cup YouTube channel. With all of this information on the race accessible, one question still remains: Why exactly do we call this international race with international players the America’s Cup? The Hundred Guinea Cup was offered by the Royal Yacht Squadron for a yacht race around the Isle of Wight in 1851. The yacht AMERICA was commissioned by a syndicate of New York Yacht Club (NYYC) members for this race, who handily beat all of the other 14 yachts entered to take the Cup. The Cup was renamed the America’s Cup (in honor of the yacht, not the country) and was donated to the NYYC under a Deed of Gift to be a perpetual trophy for friendly competition between nations. Early races were run with yachts between 60 and 90 feet on the waterline, culminating in the J-Class series of Vanderbilt, Sopwith and Lipton fame.

06 Hailing from Switzerland,Team Artemis Racing is a challenger for the 2017 America’s Cup 07 The Ulysse Nardin logo on the Team Artemis Racing yacht

06

The yachts had to be built in the home country of the challenger, and their yachts had to be sufficiently strong to cross the Atlantic. The defending NYYC could build a much lighter yacht to defend and did so. In 1970, after the switch to the more affordable 12-meter class, there were multiple challengers and an elimination series, sponsored by Louis Vuitton, was set up to determine the fastest of the challengers to take on the defender. Nevertheless, the NYYC successfully defended this trophy for 132 years until 1983 when Alan Bond took it to Australia. Only four countries have held the Cup: the United States, New Zealand, Australia and Switzerland. Many have likened the excitement of yacht racing to watching paint dry or grass grow with some justification. But this changed in San Francisco in 2013. With boundaries to the racecourse, a simple windward leeward course, huge wing-sailed catamarans flying above the water at nearly 40 knots, supported only by a foil about the size of a surfboard, and superb camerawork from on board and overhead, the sport has been transformed for the spectator into a “can’tmiss” event, which we look forward to following until its sure-to-be exciting culmination in 2017.

The upcoming months will see several important milestones achieved; the end of 2015 brings the delivery of the SF40, and 2016 the M50 and M60S. All of these latest projects are built entirely in aluminum, a distinguishing feature of Mondomarine’s projects. In spring 2017, Mondomarine will be delivering the M40 EXPLORER. With such a strong inventory of sold yachts under construction, and an impressive choice of concepts, Mondomarine is established as a top Italian superyacht builder, and a compelling choice for anyone considering construction facilities.

Sarp Yacht is owned by one of Turkey’s most respected families, which has a strong history of success in other industries. Based on that experience, the family’s journey into the superyacht world began by establishing the correct foundation and framework for the venture. To a great extent, this was achieved by implementing the Integrated Quality Management System (ISO 9001 & ISO 14001 & ISO 18001 OHSAS) certified by the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS). At time of publication, Sarp Yacht was the only shipyard among the many in Antalya to have all three of these ISO certifications.

Setting New Standards with Sarp Yacht Southern Turkey is home to the 10,000-square-meter Sarp Yacht shipyard — one of the largest and most modern facilities in the Free Zone of Antalya. Visitors to the yard will be impressed by how tidy and well organized it is; further investigation reveals systems and processes that are more commonly associated with the benchmark northern European names. From management to shop floor there is a desire to do the job right, which manifests itself in all aspects of the business.

The SARP 46M is due for completion in Autumn 2015. With growing rumors that the yard is on course to set a new standard in this market sector, her launch is eagerly anticipated by media, brokers and clients alike. Sarp has opted for a sophisticated and conventional appearance with state-of-the-art, but well-proven systems and engineering. Excellent attention to detail, as is obvious when visiting the yard, will result in a high-quality finished article sure to stand the test of time; it’s also offered at a very attractive price.

06 SAPR 46M features a modern and stylish interior with accommodations for 10 to 12 07 Alfreso dining is available on SARP 46M’s expansive upper deck

Naval architecture and external styling is by Taka Yacht Design, whose previous notable projects include AXIOMA (ex-RED SQUARE) and AMPHITRITE. A composite superstructure tops the steel displacement hull, which was comprehensively analyzed to reduce resistance and wave profile. This use of composite rather than aluminum above the deck benefits both stability and efficiency by reducing weight aloft while also decreasing maintenance requirements. Internal design comes from the highly respected drawing board of Adam Lay, whose brief was to create a sophisticated and elegant interior with a clean simplicity of design. It resulted in an inviting, comfortable and relaxing atmosphere. The UK-based Adam Lay Studio excels in the design of custom superyacht interiors and its already long list of accolades was added to when this project won the Design Et Al Award 2015 for Best Yacht Concept over 40m. The vessel has received additional award recognition, including:

The SARP 46M provides accommodation for 10 to 12 guests in five excellent cabins. Two doubles and two twins, both with Pullman berths, are found on the lower deck and a lovely full-beam master suite is located on the main deck with an adjoining study, his-and-hers bathrooms and two large walk-in closets. A wonderful balance is found between internal and external spaces; neither feels as if it has been compromised to benefit the other. The yacht can carry nine or 10 crew who will be delighted to find that particular attention has been given to operational practicality during the design stage. The responsibility of overseeing this exciting project is carried by Shipyard Manager Emre Sandan; those who know him feel sure it will be a great success. It’s rare to meet someone with such focus and determination. Sarp hopes to complete the yacht ahead of schedule and possibly in time to display her with Northrop & Johnson at the 2015 Monaco Yacht Show, September 23–26, before shipping her to the U.S. for the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show in November 2015. However, Sandan makes it clear that no corners will be cut to meet that schedule.

01 The Patriarch Andrew Winch Designs After founding his company with his wife Jane in 1986, Andrew Winch has become one of the most prolific superyacht designers in the world. Some 75 superyachts, both sailing and motor, have been built from the designs that emerged from his Thames-side London studio. His mantelpiece has collected 30 industry awards for his designs’ outstanding qualities. Over the years, his devoted clients increasingly requested Winch’s designs to extend beyond their superyachts into private homes and jets, which he calls “penthouses in the sky.” More than 50 in-house designers work at Andrew Winch Designs, making it one of the largest in the business. As creative director, Winch comments: “Our portfolio illustrates our design team’s diversity, unlimited talent and fervor for design.” Winch has worked for some of the most-high-profile clients imaginable — although he remains resolutely tight-lipped on the subject. From motor yacht behemoths like the 133-meter M/Y AL MIRQAB to the sleek, vibrant 33-meter S/Y INOUI and intricately detailed classic ketch S/Y SHEHEREZADE, Andrew Winch can adapt his style to any owner’s tastes. Some of Winch’s recent high-profile projects include Lürssen’s 90-meter M/Y

PHOENIX 2; the 91.5-meter Oceanco M/Y EQUANIMITY; and Feadship’s 99-meter M/Y MADAME GU and 62-meter M/Y SEA OWL. Size doesn’t always matter in Winch’s book; his custom tender designs with Hodgdon Yachts for SEA OWL earned a Boat International Media World Superyacht Award last year. Winch’s novel 80-meter tandem concept collaboration with pedigreed Dutch yacht builder Royal Huisman last year garnered serious attention. Based on the same design philosophy and low, sleek lines to bring guests closer to the water, the DART 80 can either be built as a motor yacht, a sailing yacht, or — for the owner who just can’t decide — both. Winch’s current projects include an 81-meter motor yacht with Turquoise Yachts, slated for completion in 2018; a 74-meter CRN new build and the interior of the largest Amels project to date: the 83-meter semi-custom LIMITED EDITIONS 272, both due to hit the water next year. There also are a brace of Lürssens, the 74-meter PROJECT THOR and 112-meter PROJECT PALO ALTO, under construction from Winch’s interior and exterior drawing boards. Why choose an Andrew Winch design for your next project? Aside from his serious yacht design acumen, working with Winch means you can adopt him into your every living and traveling space to create a seamless approach to your surroundings. And the familiarity that a designer can gain from working with you on multiple projects is priceless.

02 The Multitaskers Hydro Tec As superyachts become more technologically complex and structurally challenging, beauty in design originates as much from engineering as aesthetics. And this is where Hydro Tec steps in. Occupying the rare niche of “creative naval architecture,” husband-and-wife founders Sergio Cutolo and Silvia Himsolt and their team blend practical, technical savvy with a holistic creative design approach. Starting out in 1995, Hydro Tec evolved from only engineering into a full-service design, naval architecture and engineering company. The broad skillset of the Hydro Tec team means it can offer customers a complete yacht design package, from the hull shape to onboard engineering to exterior fixtures and systems design. One of Hydro Tec’s most outstanding and rewarding projects, says Cutolo, was the 50-meter M/Y AIFOS, for which the company was hired directly by the owner to carry out the naval architecture and engineering. The engineers and designers worked tirelessly to achieve the remarkable feat of keeping the 50-meter superyacht less than 500GT without losing guest space or the ability to reach speeds of 24 knots. Although Hydro Tec can adapt to the requests of any owner, the current explorer yacht trend has graced the drawing board in recent years, featuring robust and adventurous projects. The recently completed 33-meter Darwin M/Y STORM, the first of its series and Hydro Tec’s fifth launch this year, is setting out for distant horizons with a satisfied owner who brought significant experience and demanding quality standards to the project. Currently under construction with Mondomarine, Hydro Tec is working for a longstanding client to build a second, larger superyacht, due for completion in 2017. The M40, a 40-meter custom explorer, will feature a number of exciting, innovative elements based on the client’s feedback and past experiences, from the location and capacity of the wine cellar through to the custom-designed tender with lines that resemble the mothership. Those with a spirit of adventure accompanied by a taste for comfort and luxury could find inspiration in the next collaboration between Mondomarine and Hydro Tec in the M57 EXPLORER. This 57-meter concept is the current flagship design for the explorer series, preserving the elegant lines of more diminutive launches from the Italian builder, but with the added stability and dominating presence of a more robust platform for up to 12 guests. Unlike many explorer yachts, the exterior space maintains the feel of a sporty superyacht with three pool and Jacuzzi areas and a beach club, an observation deck and optional helipad. Yet the technical capabilities of the M57 will open up a world of exploration for any owner with an insatiable wanderlust.

04 The Speedmasters Roberto Curtò Design Founded in 2004, Roberto Curtò Design is an Italian full-service design, naval architecture and engineering company that has created more than 60 yachts and RIBs in the last decade. Curtò says the central philosophy for the company is simple: “listen, think, do.”

03 The Purist ER Yacht Design Ivan Erdevicki’s design career started 35 years ago at the age of 10, when he would fill his schoolbooks with drawings of yachts and boats inspired by cruising vessels near his coastal hometown in what is now Montenegro. And so his own career followed suit, taking the would-be naval architect and designer first to study at California’s UCLA and then to Maine, the home of boatbuilding in the United States, at the Westlaw Institute of Marine Technology. Setting up ER Yacht Design in Vancouver, Canada, 15 years ago, he has since branched out across the Atlantic to London, offering the full suite of interior and exterior design, naval architecture and engineering. The company’s designs currently span six to 120 meters for clients as far flung as China, Mexico, the U.S., Canada and Europe. Recent work includes the restyling of a 38-meter explorer trawler-type yacht and collaboration with Jaguar on a six-meter composite-hull tender. ER Yacht Design is currently remodeling and upgrading a 60-meter ice-class expedition yacht and designing a 25-meter aluminum power catamaran. Erdevicki distills his complex and multi-disciplinary design philosophy into a few simple words: “In pursuit of perfection,” which he achieves through a unique feeling of balance and harmony of form. The focal point of his designs is light, and the ability to “follow its natural form and direct its intensity and movement,” which is not usually seen in the design of something tangible and dynamic like a yacht, he adds. This thoughtful, almost-abstract design approach is offset by the naval architecture background that ensures Erdevicki’s work remains grounded in practicality. A purist at heart, Erdevicki continues to create his first sketches with pencil on paper, commenting, “The most beautiful and valuable things are created by hand. Technology is all well and good as an aid, but there is no technology that can substitute for human creativity.” ER Yacht Design’s latest concept, to be built at German shipyard Nobiskrug, ADAMANTINE is an 86-meter six-deck concept that mixes naval-style strength with the elegance and refinements of a superyacht. Its angled, interlocking tinted windows give the impression of sparkling, faceted diamonds, while its profile is powerful from every angle, producing an effect that is masculine, but not overly aggressive.

The studio’s approach ensures each vessel’s design is harmonious. It develops the interior layout in conjunction with the exterior styling, then combines the engineering requirements. The team has worked for some of Europe’s most renowned marine, naval and design studios to offer a unique mixture of skillsets and expertise. Roberto Curtò Design’s recently launched Dipiù 900SS — a striking 9.6-meter tender that reaches speeds of up to 50 knots. The fully carbon-fiber boat was recently nominated for the Barca Dell’Anno 2016 award. 03B

Roberto Curtò Design’s roots lie in the realms of yachting and boating; it has released a concept for a 49.2-meter motor yacht, the MY50, which promises to reach speeds of up to 28 knots and boasts a masculine, modern profile. The exterior of the MY50 is all about soaking up the surroundings with minimal obstructions to its panoramic views and plenty of space for lounging in the sun on the beach club with a bar at water level. It accommodates up to 10 guests and features a full-beam owner’s cabin with superb views to the bow, Jacuzzi and sauna.

05 The Crossover Creative Guido de Groot Design Guido de Groot’s path to becoming a superyacht designer was not a typical one. The Dutchman first realized his childhood dream of becoming a car designer for Citroën after studying transportation design. It was not until 1986, around the age of 20, when he came across the build project for the fourth M/Y HIGHLANDER at the Feadship de Vries yard, that he started drawing yachts. Eleven years later, in 1997, de Groot set up his own yacht design company in Leiden, Holland. He has not, however, lost the influences of his formative years as an auto designer; many car design references can be found in his often-sporty custom and semi-custom superyachts. Since establishing the company, de Groot’s team has grown to eight, many of whom share an automobile-industry background. This team designs the interiors and exteriors of yachts built by some of the leading shipyards around the world. Early adopters of computer-aided programs for design, the de Groot team has a versatile portfolio, ranging from traditional to futuristic. Past notable projects include more than 30 collaborations with Mulder shipyard; Feadship’s 48.2-meter M/Y CAROLINA; the 36-meter sloop S/Y GITANA, built by Perini Navi; a number of superyachts with AB Yachts, including 41.6-meter M/Y MARIA PIA; the 37-meter Horizon M/Y ESPRESSO; and several recent projects with Van Der Valk. “I see the trend in clients’ requests moving towards spending time closer to the water, with folding-out balconies and terraces,” says de Groot, whose recent concepts have been exploring new shapes and hull forms, though some have more classic lines. The hybrid-propulsion system of the Intec Marine 90 (28-meter) and 140 (43-meter) models boast low emissions and a much quieter experience for guests. Guido de Groot may have started his career in cars, but he has more than earned his stripes as a member of the superyacht design elite throughout the last 18 years.

06 The Rising Star Christopher Seymour Designs Christopher Seymour cut his teeth at the historical boat builder Norman R. Wright & Sons in Queensland, Australia. He quickly advanced his technical skills and also excelled at design, which soon saw him producing designs for Australian superyacht builders — which include PROJECT 58. His design style is as versatile as the tastes of his clients — ranging from the traditional to the radical — Seymour has created concepts to provide bold inspiration for any owner looking to stand out from the crowd.

Equally focused on engineering and creativity, the concepts in Christopher Seymour Designs’ stable mix advanced hull forms to the latest propulsion systems. He has crafted a range of concept designs to inspire clients, from his sailing yacht designs, including AMOR FATI and Y146, to his latest motoryacht portfolio, which includes MALIBU and DOUBLE CENTURY. “We want to create something magnificent, respected and admired for what the vessels are, not because of who owns, built or designed them, but on their own merits,” says Seymour of his team’s philosophy. The 75-meter ONE QUEST is a bold, striking concept with a strong, angular profile and distinctive reverse bow to increase the superyacht’s length at the waterline for efficiency and ride comfort for guests. The split-level interior layout provides a range of private areas for relaxation, while the ample deck space, infinity pool and waterside recreational areas amplify the feeling of closeness to the water. Seymour’s boldest, most boundary-pushing concept is the DOUBLE CENTURY, a 200-meter gigayacht that stretches across nine decks, reaching up to 27 meters above sea level. Accommodating more than 50 guests, the concept has every onboard entertainment option imaginable. Double helipads and hangar storage for an EC135 helicopter offer impressive transportation capacity, while storage for cars and submersibles in the garage means the exploration doesn’t stop when the anchors are dropped. Smart power plant options — including a gas turbine with twin pod units — mean that bigger doesn’t have to be slower. Christopher Seymour is one to watch; great things are predicted of his visionary work. With a creative flare that excites those with a passion for the sea, his concepts are set to turn heads around the globe.

When they moved to Florida, they saw the perfect opportunity to rekindle their childhood passion as adults. Chris and Robert bought the 116foot Crescent motor yacht UNBRIDLED in 2014. She was originally built in 1994, but the brothers had big plans for their new yacht. In 2015, she underwent an extensive refit at Lauderdale Marine Center by a specialized team that oversaw that the work performed on UNBRIDLED was completed to the highest possible specification and level of craftsmanship.

In 2010, UNBRIDLED (under previous ownership and a different name) underwent a comprehensive interior refit to the tune of $5 million. The 2015 refit replaced all the yacht’s interior and exterior soft goods. In addition, the salon was reconfigured and now offers a theaterquality screen and U-shaped couch for movies and entertaining.

According to Chris, the refit’s biggest accomplishment was the overall appearance and atmosphere on board. “She is now sleek and sexy. Anyone who walks through thinks she is brand new. She is the only boat of her size that I have been through that’s had a proper full refit.”

03 Kormaran The Kormaran is poised to redefine watercraft. This new genre of boat balks at traditional designs such as the monohull, catamaran and trimaran, offering something altogether different. This new craft pushes the boundaries of design and technology, differing from conventional vessels thanks to its revolutionary ability to change its characteristics, even when in motion. Kormaran is able to smoothly transform from a monohull, which offers excellent agility, to a catamaran or trimaran, which offer supreme stability. In addition, the Kormaran is able to convert into a bathing platform. Kormaran uses hydrofoils, which currently are a hot-ticket item in the marine world, reducing water resistance up to 80 percent. These hydrofoils allow for higher speeds at lower energy consumption levels. Another added benefit: a more stable, comfortable ride. In addition to outstanding use on the water, Kormaran’s hydrofoils allow the craft to drive in extremely shallow waters and land ashore. Cast in automotive-standard carbon fiber with technology integrated from both lightweight aircrafts and Formula 1 racecars, Kormaran is both remarkably safe and high tech. Built to owner’s specifications, the first edition Kormarans are set for delivery in summer 2016. This version will utilize marine and aircraft combustion engines for power; however, engineers are working on the possibility of hybrid or electric engines in later editions.

NEGATIVE & POSITIVE, ORDER & DISORDER, FILLED & UNFILLED — CURRIE CONTINUALLY DEVELOPS CONTRASTS IN HIS WORK

N A V I G A T O R C U L T U R E S P Y

02

C U LT U R E S P Y ROBERT CURRIE Robert Currie creates sculptures that are disorienting, weightless and mesmerizing. His work explores motion, rhythm and volume through the use of lines and geometric structures. Currie’s sculptures and site-specific installations, meticulously constructed in strands of nylon monofilament, highlight unseen forces. Engaging with the legacies of artists such as Naum Gabo and Sol Lewitt, Currie’s linear works convey complex systems of order and the power of tensile forces. Currie constructs each piece of his artwork by hand, precisely placing, wrapping, threading and twisting the material to create reciprocally static and fluid structures. As Gabo identified, any material might be suitable for the creation of sculpture, as long as the artist is attuned to its specific emotional qualities.

Rational and irrational, negative and positive, order and disorder, filled and unfilled, Robert Currie continually develops contrasts in his work. Volume is created within apparent emptiness. Light emerges from intricate systems of intersecting lines and spaces, creating artwork that dances and ripples despite being stationary. Currie actively engages with his material’s properties and their propensity to reflect, diffract and absorb light in order to articulate the contrast of solidity and fluidity. Through woven lines, voids materialize to give a hint and perception of nothing as a result of “something.”

Robert Currie was born in London, 1976, where he lives and works. He achieved his master’s degree at the Royal College of Art in 2000. In the same year he was selected for “New Contemporaries” and was commissioned by Sotheby’s to create an installation in its atrium. His work is exhibited internationally; he is represented by Bryce Wolkowitz in New York, Galerie Gimpel et Müller in Paris and Van der Grinten Galerie in Cologne. Currie’s work is held in numerous well-known international public and private collections.

THE BRITISH VIRGIN ISLANDS WORDS ANN LANDRY

N A V I G A T O R S P O T O N

There must be a reason why the British Virgin Islands (BVI) is known as the sailing capital of the Caribbean and the most popular charter destination in the world. Actually, there are several reasons. This volcanic archipelago in the Caribbean Sea comprises 60 islands and cays; the four main islands are Tortola, Virgin Gorda, Anegada and Jost Van Dyke. Thousands of charter guests flock to this British overseas territory to escape the winter blues or delight in the summer sun. The British Virgin Islands is easily accessible with flights into the Terrence Lettsome International Airport (EIS) on Beef Island with connections in San Juan, Puerto Rico, or via St. Thomas, USVI, which offers non-stop service from New York City, New York, or Miami, Florida. English is widely spoken and the U.S. dollar is the currency.

1 0 7

The second reason the glitterati makes its way to the amazing island haven: the scenery. These majestic, volcanic islands rise straight out of the sea. Impossibly white, sandy beaches fringed by coral reefs are lapped by cerulean waters. Here, guests will find some of the world’s best snorkeling and diving. Another draw of the BVIs is the sailing. The nearly perfect conditions offer an ideal place for both novice and experienced sailors to take the helm and explore. Consistent trade winds blow between 15 and 20 knots — a fine gust for an exhilarating sail in the Sir Francis Drake Channel, protected from the fetch of the sea by the mountains of Virgin Gorda to the east and Tortola to the north.

This perennial hot spot has more than one attraction; the first of which is the climate. Boasting average air and water temperatures of 80 degrees Fahrenheit/27 degrees Celsius year round, the BVI is perfectly temperate; it’s not too hot, not too cold, but just right.

01 The turquoise waters of the BVIs are primed for sailing 02 Pristine white-sand beaches can be found ashore on all of the islands 03 No BVIs trip is complete without a swim to the Soggy Dollar Bar for its legendary Painkiller cocktail

04 Saba Rock is one of the British Virgin Islands’ most iconic spots

For more exciting sailing, ease out of the channel, as do the yachts competing in the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda Loro Piana Caribbean Superyacht Regatta & Rendezvous every March. This glamorous event pits proud and powerful sailing yachts from 72 to 197 feet against one another in a four-day sailing match. Yachts arrive from all over the world to compete in the sailing event of the season. Yacht Club Costa Smeralda is located in Virgin Gorda and is a sophisticated, mega yacht facility styled after the Aga Khan’s facility in Sardinia. This uber-luxurious resort and marina is adjoined to the new Oil Nut Bay development and is a perfect place to stay while enjoying the islands.

To truly experience the British Virgin Islands, you need to get local. Experience the native culture at Sydney’s Peace and Love at Jost Van Dyke, offering family-style dinners of indigenous lobster with all the trimmings, an honor bar, and maybe a limbo contest or jump-up (native band). No trip to the BVIs is complete without a visit to the Soggy Dollar Bar in White Bay on Jost Van Dyke for the original Painkiller. Swim ashore, hence the name “Soggy Dollar,” to enjoy this delicious concoction guaranteed to relieve pain, stress, tension and whatever else may be on your mind. And there is Foxy’s, which has a boutique complete with t-shirts to prove we’ve been there. Foxy has traveled the world over and he has a bit of talent with the guitar and song — he may make up a ballad just for you. Be sure to take a stroll down the main street, a path running along the beach. There’s not too much going on there, but then again, that’s its charm.

Other recommended dining spots ashore include the Tradewinds Restaurant at Peter Island Resort & Spa, Biras Creek in the North Sound on Virgin Gorda and Brandywine on Tortola. And then there are the activities. The British Virgin Islands have something on offer for everyone. Looking for a spa day? Visit Peter Island Resort & Spa, a beautiful 1,800-acre island, of which only 300 acres are developed. The yacht can anchor off or dock up while you nip ashore for a luxury experience in a peaceful environment. For those looking to reel in the big one, competitionclass sportfishing boats are available for full and half-day charters. These trips will take you to the very fishy waters of the Puerto Rico Trench to the north (second in depth only to the Mariana Trench in the Pacific) or French Cap Cay to the south. Upwelling of colder waters from the depths brings nutrients to the surface; small fish are attracted to the nutrients and so on up the chain to the game fish — for which you’ll be on the hunt. Sportfishing also is available in Anegada. There are so many things to do in the BVIs, but be sure you add these must-do, can’t-miss sights and activities for a true British Virgin Islands experience. Anegada is known as the “drowned island.” This low-lying coral and limestone atoll offers miles of white sandy beaches, including the 18-milelong Horseshoe Reef.

Many ships have come to grief on Anegada’s reefs, but to your delight the snorkeling and diving are excellent. The perfect place to get away from it all, an overnight anchor off Anegada will showcase a sky full of stars and the enchantment of solitude. Tiny Marina Cay was made famous by the author Rob White, who purchased the island in the 1940s and built his island home with sakrete and seawater. A library and cistern have been incorporated into the present day structures at the resort. According to Mr. White, the island was visited by a German submarine during World War II. Just off shore, you can find otherworldly snorkeling with “arrow fish,” Jacques Cousteau’s name for squid. Almost as famous as the islands themselves are The Baths at Virgin Gorda. These natural seawater pools have been created by uplifting of gigantic boulders of plutonic granite. Enjoy fabulous snorkeling at The Baths and nearby Fallen Jerusalem.
