N A V I G A T O R E D I T O R I A L C O M M E N T

I can’t help but to see a lot of similarities between the COVID-19 crisis and watching a major hurricane unfold. Even now, as I once again see the faces of my colleagues and watch businesses coming back to life in the United States and Europe, the storm is still churning away elsewhere. You do your best to be prepared for the unexpected, but with these types of “storms” being inherently unpredictable, you just have to keep your cool, do what needs to be done, and make the best decisions you can. Business is a balancing act. For all of the advantages of the digital dominion — instantaneous access to information, global reach at one’s fingertips, worldwide communications connectivity, expressive and affordable visual content — relying strictly on the digital domain for business operations is about as savvy as relying on a unicycle for transportation. During the COVID crisis, online dependency was dialed up to eleven across all business sectors, and, in many ways, that access is what made the crisis survivable for a lot of companies, schools and households. Adapting to that need, we at Northrop & Johnson optimized our digital capabilities over the last year, welcoming new video and top digital talent to our fold. Yet we never lost sight of what makes us special as a global brokerage. We are a team of talented collaborators, and it is our human element that makes us exceptional. As other brokerages were cutting back on employees and minimizing their global footprint, Northrop & Johnson offices across the globe continued to hire, expand locations and deliver personalized service through uncertain times. It was a bet that has paid off with dividends. Now that the eye of the storm has passed, that human element of our business is poised to lead the way forward in what promises to be a yachting renaissance. Throughout the pandemic, yacht sales rocketed to extraordinary levels with sales up 45% over the previous year, and as I write they are up over 75% when comparing with the same period in 2020. As we can now see, the pent-up demand for human interaction and connection to the outside world wasn’t just a far-fetched theory. In numbers unprecedented in recent years, new buyers turned to yachting as a safe and self-sufficient way to reconnect to the world. As with the larger yacht market, it is a joy to see the 80-foot yacht market become white-hot with fresh enthusiasm from first-time yacht buyers. Businesses are reopening and the economy is springing back to life. We are excited to see international travel restrictions easing and the Med opening up. Charter bookings in the United States and Europe are soaring – with yacht owners, charter clients and crew eager to get back on the water and into the sunshine. We are absolutely future-focused on an exhilarating season ahead. In this issue of Navigator, we invite you to sit in on a conversation with Peter Lürssen about the future of propulsion technology. We look at an emerging market in electric tenders and visit eco-focused destinations in the Caribbean. Of course, one likes to arrive in style by land, air and sea, so Bond cars and private flying experiences also are featured on the pages ahead. We sincerely hope that you and your families have weathered the last year in good health and invite you to journey forward with us into the blue skies and calm seas ahead. P Peter Lürssen Lürssen has remained a family-run shipyard since its inception in 1875. It is now in its fourth generation of private ownership under the helm of CEO Peter Lürssen. After studying naval architecture and working in the commercial shipbuilding industry, Peter Lürssen joined his family business in 1987. He went on to establish Lürssen’s yacht division, which focused on building large yachts. Today, Lürssen is one of the world’s leading large yacht builders.

01 Built for global exploration, the 465ft (142m) NORD took her place in the top fifteen largest superyachts when she was delivered in early 2021

PIONEERING PROPULSION German yachtbuilder Lürssen has been at the forefront of its field for more than a century, pioneering the way forward for the industry since they built the world’s first motor boat in 1886. Today, with green yachting and sustainability being such a huge topic, it is no surprise that the world-leading shipyard is working on developing innovative eco-propulsion systems. Navigator talks to Peter Lürssen about the future of yacht power. WORDS MIRIAM CAIN

Why is Lürssen involved in the future of propulsion technology? P The issues surrounding CO2 emissions is ever-present in all our lives, both on land and sea. The International Maritime Organization (IMO) committed itself to reducing the CO2 emissions of shipping by 50 percent by 2050 compared to 2008 levels, which includes those of the yachting sector. This is a challenging target for everyone involved, but I believe it is a necessity and at Lürssen we want to do our part to build our yachts in the most environmentally friendly way possible. To give yacht propulsion some context, what are the basics? P For a long time the combustion engine has served as a reliable power source in propelling yachts. However, over the years what was required of propulsion technologies kept increasing, while at the same time knowledge and technological developments pushed the boundaries of power. The use of the first diesel-electric

propulsion systems as an alternative to a conventional direct mechanical prop-shaft drive made yachts even quieter and cruising became more comfortable. Then came hybrid-drive concepts, which were introduced at the end of the 1990s by Lürssen with the launch of the first hybrid propulsion motor yacht LIMITLESS. Now everyone in the industry is working toward emission-free cruising, and Lürssen is at the forefront of research and development in this area. What are the current propulsion systems available? P The current options for propulsion are the conventional diesel-mechanic system, the diesel-electric system (with or without Azipods), and a hybrid system (with or without Azipods). The diesel-mechanic type of propulsion is still very dominant today – it is an efficient system for most motor yachts that takes little space on board, with good reliability. It is the easy solution for most shipyards but it has its issues, the main being its inefficiencies when cruising at low speeds.

K E E L L I F E N A V I G A T O R K N O W S

3 5

A

What is the diesel-electric alternative? P Diesel-electric is a combination of electric propulsion motors and diesel generators that provide electrical power for both propulsion and the hotel load (the running of the equipment on board). If you add Azipods, the yacht’s maneuverability is greatly improved as the turning capability is much higher than that of a conventional propeller and rudder system. However, this type of propulsion system is usually only suitable for large yachts as it requires more space in the engine room for the converters and other parts.

B

C

D

What is the difference between diesel-electric and hybrid propulsion? P The hybrid system combines the advantages of both the efficiencies of a diesel-mechanical system at higher speeds and the efficiencies of a diesel-electric system at slower speeds. Connected to the yacht’s electrical grid, the gear box drives the propellers to move the boat when required, while it also feeds the grid to power the hotel load. It has the advantage of low noise, no smoke, little vibration and, when cruising at low speeds you don’t have to start your main engines to move around in a bay or when leaving port. At higher speeds, the main engines are added and used together with the electric motor for maximum performance. This mode avoids electrical conversion losses and thus ensures more fuel efficiency. You can actually switch off your generators and use the main engine for your hotel load by taking the power from the main engines and converting them to electrical power. This saves running hours on the generator engines. And when you add an Azipod to the hybrid propulsion system you have a system with further improved maneuverability. The only drawback is the complexity of the power management system, but this is the propulsion system that is being used the most on yachts under construction today.

K N O W S

Do you have a preferred solution that you recommend? P The propulsion and power production system on a yacht is down to the client’s preferences in much the same way as the size and type of yacht is their choice. To find the best solution you need to take the client’s specific requirements into account. If their desire is to cruise in the Mediterranean and spend a lot of time at anchor or in port, for example, we will recommend a different system than we would to a client looking to cruise greater distances and venture further afield. The components should be designed in such a way that the yacht’s power consumption is maximally efficient and as sustainable as possible. You mentioned the new IMO Tier 3 regulations enacted in 2016. Has this been the big driving factor in the eco-conscious approach of Lürssen? P It is certainly an additional motivator as regulations obviously need to be adhered to, but I think the whole yachting industry knows how important it is to care for the oceans and the environment. The new regulation required a clean-up of the exhaust emissions for a yacht to be allowed to certain areas. It forced us to develop a new filtration system, which we had used before, but we expanded on this and developed a complete new set of filters. All yachts with their keels laid after January 1, 2016, have been fitted with a stateof-the-art exhaust after-treatment system that reduces the nitrogen oxide and noise emissions. We managed to create an extremely compact system through which can filter out 90% of the nitrogen oxides, thereby protecting the environment.

06 07

Where do you see the future of propulsion? P I think fuel cells will be the future – either driven directly by hydrogen or driven by hydrogen created from reformation of methanol, which is actually the solution we are aiming for. Since 2009, we have been involved in research projects aimed at using fuel cells on ships in order to advance sustainable shipbuilding. We don’t just want to use the latest technology on our yachts – we want to advance the status quo. Since 2012, the development of a modular fuel cell system using methanol has been underway – this is a government-sponsored research project that runs under the name Pa-X-ell.

06 The state-of-the-art exhaust after-treatment system on board the 465ft (142m) NORD 07 Peter Lürssen announced Lürssen’s pioneering propulsion fuel cell technology during a recent Lürssen Live

K E E L L I F E N A V I G A T O R K N O W S

How will this work on board a superyacht? P Essentially, methanol is converted into hydrogen, which is then used in fuel cells to generate electricity. Unlike liquid hydrogen, which needs to be pressurized and stored in extensive structures, methanol has a higher energy density and can carry a lot of hydrogen within its chemical composition. It also can be stored in structural tanks in the yacht’s hull for long periods. Methanol is already available in almost every port in the world, and, despite its low flash point, it is as safe and as easy to handle on board as diesel fuel. The core of the system is the fuel cell from our partner Freudenberg. The hydrogen from the reformed methanol generates electrical energy with oxygen from the ambient air. Extremely low in pollutants and combined with regeneratively-produced methanol, it is also carbon neutral. Warm, moist air is the only by-product. Does it have other advantages? P Thanks to the modular construction the methanol fuel cell system can be adjusted to a customized yacht to keep space requirements and costs as low as possible and the total efficiency of the system as high as possible.

Fuel cells cause almost no noise or vibrations, require minor maintenance and are more efficient than diesel engines. But most importantly, emissions like nitrogen oxygen, soot and even CO2 can be avoided. Due to the low dynamic capability of fuel cells, the system layout and the combination with other energy converters and storage is the key for a successful fuel cell power system. Will we see this on a yacht in the near future? P We actually are already building a superyacht with a fuel cell installed for a pioneering and technology-driven client. Of course, we had to prove the practical value of the new propulsion including the range, autonomy and sustainability. This zero-emissions technology will allow the owner to spend more than 15 nights at anchor or cruise more than 1,000 nautical miles completely emission-free. It is an extremely exciting project for Lürssen. I believe this will be a game-changer for the yachting industry. In 2018, Garth and Leni Mathews took ownership of the stunning 125-foot (38.1m) Gulf Craft motor yacht ALTAVITA. The family played a large role in the build and design of the yacht. “Creating such a spectacular yacht of her size and sharing that experience together was challenging and fun,” they said. “Together, we made our dream come true and we are extremely proud of the result.” From her uncluttered spaces to her beautiful design and generously proportioned living areas, ALTAVITA is the perfect family yacht.

01 Perfectly proportioned with uncluttered interior spaces, the 125-foot ALTAVITA is the perfect family yacht

ALTAVITA is not the Mathews’ first foray into the yachting world. “We enjoyed adventures in Australian waters as our kids were growing up,” they say. As a busy family, the freedom offered by boats and yachts is what has always attracted them to yachting. “We’re able to board our boat at the end of a busy week, drop the ropes and cruise away from all the stresses of everyday life.” The family has owned a multitude of yachts throughout the years, ranging in size, style and builder and ALTAVITA is the latest addition to their yachting repertoire.

“The 125 series offered sumptuous accommodation in all four guest cabins all with double wardrobing. Additionally, each has its own en-suite,” the Mathews mention. They also enjoy the layouts of the salon, skylounge and alfresco deck spaces, which allowed them the freedom to make the yacht their own. “We are particularly happy with the skylounge outdoor dining and lounge area where up to 12 guests can dine and lounge in abundant comfort and space,” they said. “The design and quality of her build is second to none.”

03 04

Before 2020, the Mathews spent quite a lot of time aboard ALTAVITA, traveling to Europe, where the boat currently is located. “We were able to visit many beautiful places,” they mention. During these incredible holidays, the family would rise early to get a start on an exceptional day at sea or on the dock. “If we were docked at a marina, we would head out for an early morning walk around the local village and seek out the local markets for some fresh produce.” While the family explored, the deck crew would be busy setting up the water toys for use upon their return. “If we are at anchor, which we love the most, we go for an early morning paddleboard then sit down to our favorite breakfast prepared by our amazing chef. We then would cruise along to our next destination or stay at anchor for a few days where we would relax with our family and friends. Quite often we would head to a secluded beach for a picnic and a game of cricket. In the evening, the crew would light up the yacht with candles for dinner parties with our friends.” The Mathews family loves cruising the Italian coastline, making their way from Sicily to the Aeolian Islands and up to the Amalfi coast. “We have tried every single gelato shop in Sorrento, and have visited the amazing Blue Grotto and the Isle of Capri,” they say. “We also love Positano, Portofino, Ponza…the list goes on. We love everywhere we have been in Italy.” The Mathews also enjoy the Balearics with their beautiful beaches, ancient towns and fabulous restaurants. “The water is crystal clear there and the sunsets are to-die-for. The laid-back pace of each town is very refreshing, and the locals are welcoming and always happy to help us with any recommendations.” The Mathews family does charter out ALTAVITA. “We live in Australia and when we are not using the yacht, we charter her out to offer people their own relaxation and the same freedom we love. We have many repeat clients who come back time and time again – a testament to the wonderful crew and of course to ALTAVITA.” ALTAVITA is currently for sale with Northrop & Johnson Yacht Broker Ed Dickinson. She is priced at €9,950,000. For more information, please email Ed.Dickinson@ NorthropandJohnson.com.

Many of the top Swiss watchmaking houses produce elaborate large-format limited edition timekeepers to flex their horological muscle and design elan. But in the case of Ulysse Nardin’s fascinating UFO objet d’art, created to celebrate the brand’s 175th anniversary, the practice is particularly apt and fitting. In the 19th century – the golden age of maritime trade and military – on-board marine chronometers were essential for accurate navigation.

From its inception, Ulysse Nardin has been crafting impeccable award-winning marine chronometers that have kept more than 50 admiralties afloat as well as an untold number of merchant vessels, global-mapping explorations and scientific expeditions. These timepieces constitute the beating heart of the brand itself and their latest timepiece, the UFO, consummates all of the watchmaker’s expertise, heritage and artistic capabilities into one single object.

Housing 675 intricate components, 365 days of power reserve and a representation of the spot-on time in three time zones, it forms a vision of what the artisans and craftsmen at the watchmaker predict a mechanical marine chronometer will be in another 175 years; all while being a hyper-accurate timekeeper with extraordinary visual appeal you can use on your own yacht, today. “This unidentified floating object is truly a UFO in the watch world,” says Francois-Xavier Hotier, President of Ulysse Nardin Americas. “As we are celebrating the 175-year anniversary of our manufacture, the UFO pays tribute to Ulysse Nardin’s historical marine chronometers with a futuristic reinterpretation of our heritage. It is a rare and extraordinary timepiece for those who love the sea and have a passion for navigation.” Each UFO is wrought in lightweight aluminum (along with some cutting-edge tungsten and classic brass materials) and encased in a buoy-shaped bubble of handblown 3mm-thick artisan glass. While the wooden-boxed marine chronometers of the past had to compensate for the rocking motion of a sea vessel, the UFO is actually designed to rock gently back and forth, putting the power of the ocean waves to work. Your time-telling on board will not only be accurate, it will be a kinetic-art event. Limited to only 75 pieces, ulysse-nardin.com

PENFOLDS S U P E RYA C H T S U P E R B L E N D WORDS MIRIAM CAIN

Penfolds Wines is delighted to share exclusive news of a limited-edition collector’s wine with Navigator readers. Destined to join the Penfolds flagship, Grange – known to be one of the world’s great red wines at the connoisseur end of the wine scale, the 2018 Superblend 802-A launches globally on August 5, 2021. Its stablemate Superblend 802-B launches later this year. Much like building a custom superyacht takes vision, innovation and craftsmanship, these wines combine A-grade fruit with Penfolds’ blending philosophy, the spirit of innovation, and winemaking artistry.

ON BOAR D STOR AG E Ensure the cellar is dark with humidity between 70 to 75 percent The wine storage area should be cool, with a constant temperature between 10 and 15 degrees Celsius

“These wines are immediately Penfolds, yet different… propelling varied attributes that will change and engage. Spoiled by choice – A-grade fruit from a wonderful harvest; French and American oak barrels of the highest quality… and that much-coveted ingredient, time. And, winemaking freedom to reconfigure the expected,” said Penfolds Chief Winemaker, Peter Gago.

Bottles should be stored on their sides so that the cork is kept in contact with the wine to prevent it from drying out, leading to oxidation

These Penfolds Superblends, called 802A and 802B, were carefully selected from coveted vineyards in South Australia that were pinpointed for their flagship wines. Because of their unique characteristics, Gago decided to separate and age them in different oak treatments to create truly powerful, intriguing counterpoints that carry the Penfolds DNA and will only get better with age. To create Penfolds 2018 Superblend 802-A Cabernet Shiraz, individual components were aged separately in new American oak hogsheads for 22 months prior to being blended together. The resulting cabernet sauvignon makes its structural presence felt, comprising 68% of the blend, while the 32% shiraz adds generosity and a hint of spice. Its sibling Superblend 802-B Cabernet Shiraz boasts a varietal composition that is more evenly split with cabernet sauvignon contributing 55% and Shiraz 45%. Blended post vintage and completing 19 months maturation in French oak hogsheads.

Avoid keeping wine near the engine room to avoid any unnecessary vibrations affecting the wine

The most famous of these, Grange, is the only Australian wine, and is among only 13 wines in history to receive 100-point scores from Wine Spectator and Wine Advocate for the same vintage, the 2008. Grange is Australia’s only first growth, and Penfolds has received more 90-point scores than any other new world winery. Wine & Spirits Magazine has awarded Penfolds Wines Winery of the Year 28 times, more than any other producer.

A great addition to a yacht’s wine cellar, Penfolds Wines, especially this limited edition, can easily be stored and Penfolds Wines, whose story began in 1844 with its founding kept for special occasions on board. by Dr. Christopher and Mrs. Mary Penfold’s arrival in Adelaide, South Australia, is known for its highly acclaimed To request an allocation or information, contact Penfolds white and red wines and Champagne. at RSVP@penfolds.com or call us at 800-255-9966.

With private jet travel hitting record levels, more clients are flying privately and buying private flights for the first time. In some cases, you might be a guest. In other instances, you may have just bought a jet card or rented a private airplane to fly to your next yacht charter. To make sure you are welcomed back – and avoid expensive post-flight charges – here is our private jet etiquette 101.

7 3

Timekeeping A benefit of flying privately is being able to show up shortly before takeoff – ideally between 30 and 40 minutes before departure. At airports with lots of private flights, there can be five or six FBOs, sometimes located at opposite ends of the field. In some cases, the lounge is part of hangars and offices, so your driver may need a few extra minutes to figure out where you should be dropped off, or find the entrance gate if you are able to drive planeside. At peak periods, FBOs can be busy. You might have to wait a few minutes for desk staff to be available. Then once you provide the tail number (keep it handy – that’s how they identify your aircraft) they have to locate your pilots. They are likely in the lounge area, but also could be out at the airplane making final preparations. If there is a lot of luggage and your group is arriving in two or three different cars, it can take a few minutes to get everything loaded. Flight crews have daily duty limits and may have a flight after yours. Many charter contracts call for extra charges if you are late, but don’t embarrass yourself by getting there two hours early to allow plenty of time for security and some discount shopping at duty free – 40 minutes before should give you plenty of time. Your attire Don’t worry too much about dressing too smartly. Private air travel has become more relaxed but, unless it actually is a business flight, dressing as if you are going to a friend’s house for dinner, for example, is a good rule of thumb. Smart casual is the way to go. On the jet Just as if you are visiting a friend’s home, remember that most charter jets are owned by folks like you. They rent them out when they aren’t using them. If you are going to put your feet up on a chair, cover it with a blanket. Damaging the furniture or dropping red wine on the carpet can put the jet out of service for several days for repairs and replacements. It can also mean a big bill for you. The fine print on charter, jet card and fractional contracts hold you responsible for damage, even from a guest or pets. Ripping a leather chair can cost thousands of dollars. Top tip If you feel like you have received good service then you should give a gratuity to the crew. Those who work in private aviation will always say “tips are never expected, but always appreciated” – which is a polite way of saying yes, you should tip.

01 Aston Martin DBS Superleggera It goes without saying that the carmaker most associated with James Bond in the public imagination is Aston Martin. The connection began with the iconic, gadget-laden Silver Birch DB5 Sean Connery drove in 1964’s Goldfinger (above). Today, the Gaydon, UK-based manufacturer has come home to roost at MI-6 as the official maker of Bond cars since 2002’s Die Another Day. Aston Martin has confirmed that several of its vehicles will make an appearance in No Time to Die: The self-same vintage DB5, a vintage AMV8 (opposite – perhaps a nod to the “muscle-car” Aston Martin George Lazenby drove in his single turn as the character in 1969’s On Her Majesty’s Secret Service), the track-ready Valhalla hyper car, and a more modern production model, the DBS Superleggera (which was launched in 2018 – pictured top). No word from Aston Martin on whether this new DBS Superleggera is the “special” Bond car for this film, but it certainly fits the bill. Superleggera is a very sexy Italian word meaning “super-light,” and this vehicle’s muscular, cutting-edge carbon fiber design cuts significant weight to squeeze every last thrilling drop of torque out of its 5.2-liter twin-turbo V12 power plant. The car can blast from 0 to 62mph in just 3.4 seconds, and, more importantly for Bond, from 0 to 100mph in a mere 6.4 seconds. astonmartin.com

03 BMW Alpina XB7 In 1997’s Tomorrow Never Dies, Pierce Brosnan’s Bond picks up the keys to a “rental” BMW 750iL sedan that ends up being chock-full of Q Branch gadgets, including missile launchers and remote control maneuvering via cell phone. Brosnan also briefly drives a similarly equipped BMW Z8 roadster in 1999’s The World is Not Enough. While the new BMW Alpina XB7 (below) might look like a sophisticated version of an SUV more fit for a soccer mom, it is a potently stealthy double agent. Created in collaboration with Alpina – a BMW’s frequent engine tuning and styling studio partner – a base model X7 is bespoke-tailored into a supremely powerful, comfortable, and masterful touring machine. A 4.4-liter bi-turbo V8 doles out 612hp with a top speed of 180mph. Inside, expect luxurious comfort and handling that makes you think, “I would love to just drive this car across the country,” which is exactly what it was designed for. bmw.com

02 Bentley Continental GT Speed In the original Sir Ian Fleming novels, Bond’s car is often identified as a Bentley (the 4.5-liter convertible, the fictional Mark VI, and the R-Type Continental, to be specific). While that maker’s stately approach has delivered vehicles perhaps more apt for a Bond villain’s zeitgeist, the artisans in Crewe, UK, who produce modern Bentleys, have mastered the art of delivering blistering super-spy performance tempered with exquisite luxury finish and comfort. The new Bentley Continental GT Speed (above), especially in its drop-top version, is no exception. On the performance side, expect an updated version of the signature Bentley 6-liter W12 engine that delivers a 0 to 60mph giddy-up of 3.6 seconds, as well as new – and welcome – carbon ceramic brakes. And on the sartorial side, the Z-fold roof is available in seven colors and styles, including tweed. bentleymotors.com 03

04 Land Rover Defender 110 V8 Carpathian Edition In 1983’s Octopussy, Sir Roger Moore’s Bond hauls his super-spy collapsible Acrostar micro-jet

in a horse trailer (complete with a faux horse hindquarters to disguise it) drawn by a classic open-air Range Rover. The brand’s reborn Defender captured the hearts of adventure-loving drivers when it was re-introduced for 2020. But a very special version for this year is particularly Bond-worthy. The new Defender 110 V8 Carpathian Edition flagship vehicle adds a level of simply sinister, extremely bad-ass visual impact to the estimable off-road capabilities of the reborn SUV. A burly 5-liter supercharged V8 powers the package, but its dark, matte, military-spec all-grey/black menacing presentation is sure to strike fear into the hearts of the even most evil SPECTRE agents.

02 Quintessentially New England, the coastal town of Newport, Rhode Island is often considered the birthplace of yachting

Joining the line-up of the world’s most prestigious events – the likes of the Goodwood Revival and Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance – the Audrain Newport Concours & Motor Week has become a major international concours event on the historic racing circuit, attracting car enthusiasts from around the world. Hosted in Newport, Rhode Island – for many the birthplace of both yachting and automotive racing in America – the fall event celebrates some of the rarest and most astonishing cars ever created.

Having long celebrated being the epicenter of yachting in America, Newport also has been home to many firsts – from the first polo match played in America in 1876, to the first professional tennis match in 1881, the first U.S. Open in 1895, and every America’s Cup race from 1930 to 1983. It is also home to one of the first sanctioned automotive track races in America’s history, which dates back as early as the Gilded Age when Willie K. Vanderbilt II and some of his friends raced their high-priced automobiles at Newport’s Aquidneck Park horse track.

Returning for its second year from September 30 to October 3, Audrain Newport Concours & Motor Week plugs into the coastal town’s rich automotive history and luxury sporting activities. Hosted in Newport, the event is a showcase of New England at its most beautiful, the fall colors and famed Newport Mansions providing a stunning backdrop for some of the greatest cars in the world. The four-day program includes exhibitions of rare and vintage automobiles, with talks and seminars from experts in the automotive world. Sporting activities including tennis, golf and sailing along the Newport coast take place each day, while the social scene includes concerts, cocktails, dinners and parties hosted in the grand mansions. The final day brings everything together with the Audrain Newport Concours d’Elegance – a showcase of the rarest automobiles in the world, displayed and judged for a chance to win the coveted best in show, Willie K. Located on the eastern tip of Virgin Gorda in the beautiful British Virgin Islands, the exclusive marina resort of Oil Nut Bay was made for the waterborne. Secluded and ultra-private, the 400-acre property is made up of low-level buildings – some with living roofs – that seemingly disappear into the backdrop of the verdant green hills. Surrounded by coral reefs and calm Caribbean waters, Virgin Gorda is the sailing epicenter of the archipelago, and Oil Nut Bay has fast become a firm favorite with the yachting crowd. With jetty moorings for yachts up to 130 feet and mooring balls in the bay, there is plenty to offer all those who choose to step ashore, including the signature overwater restaurant, Nova. While overlooking the waters of Deep Bay, enjoy a tapas-style alfresco luncheon from the delectable menu created by head chef Jermain Abrams. Follow your long and leisurely lunch with a siesta on the floating hammocks or a refreshing dip in the suspended pool while children play foosball or billiards in the dedicated games room. With more than 300 days of sunshine, deep natural harbors, extensive superyacht refit and repair facilities and fantastic infrastructure, Malta is an ideal gateway to the Mediterranean’s most popular cruising grounds. At the heart of the island lies the deep water port of Grand Harbour Marina, one of the region’s largest natural harbors. The marina is ideally located for yachts looking for a winter stopover or for cruising Malta and the neighboring islands of Gozo and Comino. The waterfront itself has a backdrop of watchtowers, monuments, archways and ancient merchant houses as well as plenty of amenities, shops and a nautical museum. Lying just opposite the marina is the UNESCO World Heritage city of Valletta, a dynamic capital with plenty to offer in terms of culture, dining and leisure pursuits. Ancient palazzos and honey-hued buildings house a vibrant cultural scene of independent cafés and bars – Caffe Cordina is a real institution known for its pastries, while Rubino is the place to try traditional local dishes. Back along the waterfront is where you will find some of the hottest restaurants in town, including Risette, The Harbour Club and Noni – one of the five Michelinstar restaurants that can be found on the island. For early evening drinks, the wine bar Cru is a firm favorite with the superyacht crowd, while Yard 32 is the place to head for more than 180 varieties of gin. Cruising around Malta, you will come across picturesque fishing villages, beautiful anchoring spots, grottos and secluded bays aplenty. From Marsaxlokk to Golden Bay and Gnejna in the south, to Mellieha, Selmun and St. Paul’s Bay in the north, the island has plenty to offer the waterborne. For those looking to explore further, the islands of Comino and Gozo are a short sail away and offer protected anchorages, crystal clear waters and fantastic beaches. With so much to offer, it is no surprise that Malta is fast becoming the yachting hot spot of the Mediterranean. 02

02 The crew aboard the 164-foot (50m) CHASING DAYLIGHT excel in all manner of guest activities 03 The Underwater Sculpture Gallery off Grenada's Molinere Point

Family yacht charters have evolved over the years, deviating from the tried-and-trusted beach vacation to the hottest travel trend for families at the moment: Edventures (which stands for “education adventure”). Combining the classic ingredients of travel and adventure with education that enriches all of the guests on board, a superyacht provides a platform where children can be inspired and learn all while having fun. Learning while at sea Many charter yachts have introduced a broad range of onboard activities that are not only fun for kids but also will educate them about the cruising grounds they are visiting. From cooking classes with the chef to learning about the environment – both on land and beneath the surface – lessons that take place in the real world will always have more of an impact on your child than the ephemeral nature of the knowledge gained in a normal classroom. While cruising aboard the 86-foot (26m) MAXXX in Southeast Asia, for example, guests of all ages can learn how to cook local cuisine, including tasty Thai dishes, with MAXXX’s chef Kalaya Suksala, while chef Nina Wilson aboard the 180.5-foot (55m) REVELRY loves to teach guests of all ages about Caribbean cuisine, using fresh, locally-sourced produce. For those looking to experience the sea, the exotic waters of the majestic Raja Ampat archipelago provide ample opportunities for underwater exploration. Whether snorkeling or learning to dive, the waters lying off the

northwestern coast of New Guinea are home to Indonesia’s largest marine national park and Captain Luc Heymans aboard the 85-foot (28m) catamaran LONESTAR is a qualified scuba diving instructor who can teach all ages. Marine experiences like snorkeling with manta rays and witnessing hatching baby sea turtles are par for the course while cruising the Maldives. The UNESCO-listed Hanifaru Bay is one of the best places in the world for seeing manta rays, while most of the Maldivian atolls welcome manta rays at different points of the year. An environmental project presented to children at the beginning of the charter could involve counting the manta rays, for example, and working out their habits. These types of activities give children a vital perspective of the fragile environment around them. Crew can also organize visits to local communities and schools to broaden their knowledge of the Maldivian culture further. Wildlife adventures You don’t need to be on land for larger-than-life wildlife experiences. Many children have grown up enthralled by wildlife programs by the likes of Sir David Attenborough and being out on the ocean might just be their idea of paradise. The world’s oceans harbor some of the greatest marine encounters you can experience on the planet, from breaching whales to bioluminescence. All you have to do is peek beneath the surface to gain a better understanding of the local flora, fauna and sea life that lurks below. Don a snorkel and mask and jump in to discover a whole new world. Reefs are like a fantasia of color where the iridescent coral looks like a paint palette while fish are blessed with

T H E V I E W E D V E N T U R E

hues and patterns that will leave the children in awe. The beauty of these underwater ecosystems is that they are all unique. In the waters lapping the Caribbean island of Grenada, for example, children will be rubbing their eyes in disbelief at the installations in the Underwater Sculpture Park that rest in the shallows of Molinere Bay – not only for the bizarre sculptures but also for the colorful tropical fish that have been drawn to these artificial reefs.

03 04

04 Enjoy underwater edventures and an evening movie when cruising aboard the 130-foot (39.62m) LIONSHARE

Those cruising the Turks and Caicos archipelago will find the islands’ reefs cumulatively make up one of the largest barrier reef systems in the world. Rainbow-colored coral is in abundance and a magical array of life, including nurse sharks, triggerfish, barracudas and eagle rays call this marine metropolis home. Hiring a local marine guide to come on board elevates your child’s immersion to a new level, or just donning a snorkel and mask and following the yacht crew’s advice will lead you to discover gorgeous marine creatures both big and small. Many yachts in the Northrop & Johnson charter fleet have policies to eliminate single use plastics on board, while some go a step further and are making waves on the sustainability front. One such yacht is the 130-foot (39.62m) LIONSHARE. While on board the crew can educate the younger guests on some of the yacht’s best practices, including eliminating single-use plastics and using only refillable water bottles and locallysourced products and produce. Step back in time The Caribbean islands offer myriad opportunities for exciting journeys of discovery. Steeped in maritime history and historical acclaim, Antigua is a cultural hot spot anchored by the historic Nelson’s Dockyard, while the neighboring islands of St. Kitts and Bequia boast forts and colonial buildings ideal for real-life history lessons. Imaginations will come to life in the British Virgin Islands on the actual Treasure Island that is said to have inspired Robert Louis Stevenson’s novel. This fairytale destination of hidden coves, deserted beaches and mysterious waters will transport all who visit to a land of myths and legends. While the novel is one of fiction, history dictates that this was a popular spot for pirates to hide their treasures, and the crew aboard the 164-foot (50m) CHASING DAYLIGHT love to organize treasure hunts ashore, along with mini Olympics and other fun games. Children may be even more excited at the prospect of a treasure hunt in the Tobago Cays in the Grenadines. This idyllic cluster of uninhabited islands serves as the backdrop for many of the scenes in the 2003 film, Pirates of the Caribbean, the Curse of the Black Pearl. The crew aboard REVELRY can set an orienteering course for buried treasure, where participants can walk, swim or snorkel in search of chests brimming with gold, silver, or perhaps a token shell keepsake.

Through an organization he founded, Cosmix Underwater Research, Captain Luc Heymans has been managing the salvage of a 10th century Cirebon shipwreck in Indonesia. While cruising aboard LONESTAR, children will be captivated as Captain Heymans regales tails of lost treasure and the precious stones and golden artifacts found among the multi-million dollar cargo lying deep beneath the water’s surface. Sustainable seas Being curious by nature, most children have a genuine interest in the environment and are well aware of how critical marine life is to our planet. Take advantage of this interest and participate in local initiatives, either by involving them in ocean conservation projects or by scheduling your own beach clean-up. The crew aboard the 111.7-foot (34m) XANADU OF LONDON, for example, can organize workshops with Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) in the areas in which they are cruising. In partnership with Oceans for All, they have organized many beach clean-ups in and around the Thai island of Phuket, and have joined workshops where guests have learned about important local issues such as seagrass protection and regeneration. Learning new skills Most superyachts have garage-loads full of water toys,

adding not only a fun dimension to a family yacht charter but also allowing for new skills to be acquired. For some children it might be their first opportunity to try snorkeling, while older children can try paddleboarding, surfing and windsurfing. Some yachts have PADI-accredited dive instructors within the crew, enabling guests of all ages to give diving a try and return home with a new qualification. A number of yachts also carry sailing yachts in one form or another on board with sailing instructors to teach the basics, including rigging, the different parts of the boat, seamanship and boat handling. The shallow waters of the Exumas in the Bahamas, for example, are a safe and spectacular introduction for beginners. Undoubtedly, children will be waking up unusually early, eager to start the next day’s sailing. The 189-foot (57.6m) W has two lasers in its toy chest and an enthusiastic crew who love to show guests the ropes. After an experience like any of these, who knows, the children might return to the Caribbean in a few years and sail around its waters like the professionals who taught them. These are just a handful of examples of the types of edventures you can incorporate into your yacht charter. If you would like your next yacht charter to incorporate edventures, be sure to talk to your Northrop & Johnson charter expert about incorporating edventures into your next family yacht charter.

Exploration and adventure have rapidly become the zeitgeist of luxury travel, and in line with this the yachting industry has witnessed a rising demand for adventures off the beaten track on board explorer yachts. In a world where we are all bombarded with constant demands for our attention and rarely stand still, there is something restorative about returning to a more natural environment away from the modern world – the more rare and remote, the better. Whether by yacht or on land, extravagant Arctic and Antarctic experiences have never been more de rigueur. Exploring destinations that are hard to access no longer means that levels of comfort need to suffer. One such luxury adventure to “the land beyond all lands” may be just the ticket for those looking for something different this winter. Lapland, which spreads across the tips of Norway, Sweden and Finland, is as far north as you can venture. As far as the locals are concerned (outnumbered by reindeer in a two-to-one ratio) everyone else in the world is a Southerner. For those dreaming of a secluded luxury hideaway in this remote environment, the recently opened Octola in Finnish Lapland has been touted as the most exclusive lodge in the Arctic. Picture a traditional-looking wooden cabin tucked into an enchanted fairytale forest and surrounded by more than 740 acres of private wilderness teeming with wildlife. Ten suites and an additional two-bedroom villa are tastefully furnished in a chic and minimalist Scandinavian fashion, with butler service, private chef, personal wilderness guide and a dedicated team of specialists on hand to ensure the ultimate in luxury service at a level comparable to a luxury superyacht. In a similar way to being on the ocean, a magical stillness envelops the winter wonderland, where despite the brief daylight hours there is no hurried pace (unless you are in the company of a dozen rampaging huskies careering through the snow). Revel under the magnificent Arctic skies amidst nature’s finest and enjoy the enforced seclusion. Octola’s expansive terraces and floor-to-ceiling glass walls not only set the scene for a northern lights experience, but also allow for hours of contentment soaking in the vastness of the landscape where the only signs of life come in the form of snowy footprints from reindeer, moose and Arctic hare.

Sustainability The traditional log cabin represents the most ecological building style in Finnish Lapland. The property is geothermally heated and the saunas are wood-fired. Meals are prepared with herbs and vegetables either foraged from the surrounding landscape or grown locally, while meat and fish is also sourced locally. Culture The indigenous Sami people have been herding reindeer since prehistoric times, and many still tend to their herds in the 21st century, adapting to modern technology, climate change and sustainability, often riding snowmobiles but maintaining the same principles as their ancestors. Access to a private reindeer enclosure and reindeer sleigh rides provides the opportunity to talk to local Sami herders and gain a better understanding of the traditional life led by around 70,000 indigenous Sami. Finnish hospitality Whether cozy and warm beneath a mound of animal hides on a sleigh or snuggled up in front of a crackling fire with a traditional Kaffeost (coffee with cheese pieces) and cinnamon buns, the Finnish hospitality and way of life is a key component of the Octola experience. octola.com

Beach house chic is redefined when stepping into the stunning seaside sanctuary at 20 Westway Drive, Southampton, NY 11968. In 2006 this shingle-style home received a modern makeover that retained the wistful soul of this colonial revival but added a bohemian twist. Still found around the estate are the remnants of the leisurely and recreational pursuits of society’s upper crust of the 1900s, and within the walls of this Atterbury Hills Shinnecock Bay Compound are the contemporary elements of a distinctively American style of architecture.

01 The shingle-style Hamptons beach house sits on two acres of lush green lawn

This beautiful blend of old-meets-new, traditional and current reinvent the Hamptons beach house. While the house is truly something to behold, the property is remarkable in itself. More than two acres of lush green lawn are set mere steps from a pristine beach, offering unhindered views of both Shinnecock Bay and the Atlantic Ocean. Looking from the shore east to west, you can see 180-degrees of coastline, which offers stunning views but also ensures an exceptional level of privacy for the homeowner.

One of the most awe-inspiring houses in the surrounding area, it is perfectly suited for both full-time living or weekend getaways. Primed for entertaining en masse courtesy of a sprawling floor plan that spans 9,500 square feet, the estate includes eight bedrooms and eight-anda-half baths. The elegance found within its walls are expected, the nod to traditional architecture and touches of minimalistic chic are the added bonuses that a homeowner will come to treasure. One of the most revered features of the home are the views of the water that simply delineate the interior spaces. Seemingly endless, the home takes advantage of the ambient light that spills through the windows to illuminate the spaces indoors. Indoor-outdoor living is not only on offer, but encouraged. The main house on the property has four bedrooms that all are well laid out and ideally suited for working, relaxing and good living. The kitchen is welcoming and serves as the heart of the home with a space to dine after crafting delightful meals thanks to the ultramodern appliances and amenities. And while the dining in the kitchen may be the thing to do in the winter months, come spring, the expansive ground floor living area flows into a stunning oceanside deck where alfresco dining is a must.

From tennis courts to a stunning heated infinity-edge pool that seems to flow into the ocean itself, to a private dock in the bay, this seaside sanctuary is ideally suited for a water-lover who enjoys welcoming good company and taking in stunning views. 20 Westway Drive, Southampton, NY 11968 is offered at $18,000,000.
