N A V I G A T O R E D I T O R I A L C O M M E N T
What I love most about the holiday season is that it is a time of introspection and gratitude. We take a step back from our hectic lives to create memories with family and friends, carving out moments to be grateful for the beauty and blessings in our lives. Acts of charity and kindness become commonplace during this time of wholesome reflection—it is, indeed, the most wonderful time of the year. A holiday charter is a magnificently relaxing and enjoyable way to focus on that precious quality time with those who matter most to you. Whether it’s an action-packed jaunt through The Bahamas or a peaceful tour of the Virgin Islands, a comfortable yacht with an attentive crew will make your vacation one you will always remember. We at Northrop & Johnson consider our clients part of our extended family, and it gives us great joy to help our customers plan extraordinary holiday vacations. During this atypical time, we have developed meticulous protocols for safe travel under the current restrictions and continue to adapt our policies as conditions evolve. From setting exacting standards for cleanliness and sanitation, to monitoring the health of the crew, to staying abreast of current restrictions and limitations, we are proud to say that chartering with our fleet remains a very safe and carefree way to travel. Despite the inherent challenges of the last year, there has been a quiet renaissance taking shape in the industry. Yacht sales and charter demand remain at epic levels. With shipyards booked out for years to come, this means a new generation of yachts will be coming on the market with the latest innovations in performance, aesthetics, environmental mindfulness, and technology. These contemporary yachts are being designed to meet the changing needs of the dynamic times. As they launch, there will be exciting new options coming on the market for charter clients and fresh additions to the brokerage inventory. With the new year fast approaching, know that we at Northrop & Johnson have made it our mission to not only achieve the highest industry standards of charter, brokerage, management and marketing, but to do so with impeccable attention to detail where our clients’ needs are not only met, but exceeded beyond their expectations. On the pages ahead, we will chat with experienced yacht owners and charterers about their favorite holiday destinations. We’ll explore some epic ways to celebrate while aboard and offer gift ideas for just about everyone on your list. From there, we’ll help you identify those must-have features for your next yacht—from family-friendly spaces to gyms to movie theaters. Then we will highlight premium alfresco features like beach clubs, retractable balconies and more. I hope you enjoy this issue and feel inspired to make your yachting dreams a reality. We are here to help make it happen. Wishing you and yours a holiday season full of fair winds and following seas.

“Without a doubt, the experience of cruising through the Inside Passage of Alaska aboard SERENGETI was a once-in-a-lifetime memorable occasion.” This, from an experienced charter client who has chartered throughout some of the world’s most popular cruising grounds, shows just how different each yachting experience can be. Discovering new destinations is nothing new – after all, explorers have been “discovering” new lands for centuries. However, exploring the oceans as a leisure pursuit is a relatively recent pastime and, given the surge in demand for yachts venturing further afield, it seems that lesser known, previously undiscovered cruising grounds hold much appeal for today’s charterers. That said, the majority of clients continue to opt for the well-trodden paths, including the French Riviera and the Amalfi Coast throughout the summer months, turning to the Caribbean and The Bahamas during the winter. Just how do these traditional cruising grounds compare to the far-flung shores of the South Pacific and Southeast Asia, or the dramatic landscapes of the Pacific Northwest and the Baltic? Navigator spoke to a number of owners and repeat charter clients about their favorite cruising grounds and the type of yacht they preferred. The responses were surprising in many ways, their preferences being exceedingly diverse. However, most say they are so happy to be on the water that they don’t mind where they are cruising and on board which yacht. They are just happy in the knowledge that their trusted Northrop & Johnson charter broker only recommends the best of both and, given that every yacht in the charter fleet offers the utmost in luxury and service, they know they are in safe hands.

What are your most enduring memories from vacations aboard a superyacht? “Memories from our charter aboard CHASING DAYLIGHT in The Bahamas are those we will always remember,” says a charter guest aboard the 164-foot (50m) motor yacht. “From sportfishing and messing about on her water toys to spectacular diving, the activities on offer are second-to-none and the crew’s fishing expertise and watersports instruction came in handy.” The owner of a 147-foot (45m) motor yacht says that he has had so many special moments on board his yacht that he can’t pick one specifically. “Right now we are on our second circumnavigation of the Pacific Ocean and have just spent eight days cruising the Society Islands,” he says. “They really are seemingly made for the waterborne, with snorkeling and diving, swimming and kayaking opportunities vying for our time. Ashore, the countless monuments and ruins were equally captivating and we could easily spend several more weeks immersing ourselves in Polynesian culture.” Before 2020, the owners of the 125-foot (38.1m) ALTAVITA spent a lot of time in Europe. “I have fond memories of waking up early to head out for a morning walk around the local village, seeking out the local markets for some fresh produce.” While the family explored, the deck crew would be busy setting up the water toys for use upon their return. “If we are at anchor, which we love the most, we go for an early morning paddleboard then sit down to our favorite breakfast prepared by our amazing chef. We then would cruise along to our next destination or stay at anchor for a few days where we would relax with our family and friends.”
03
What type of yacht do you typically charter? “We are a large family group and usually charter with guests of all ages so our charter broker always recommends a large, modern motor yacht,” says a repeat charter client currently aboard the motor yacht SKYFALL. “It is spacious, stable and absolutely designed for guests’ comfort. When I first started chartering, it was always the larger sailing yachts that appealed the most,” he says. “Even though we tended only to raise the sails on occasion, the flexibility to do so added to the adventure. In my experience, many of the modern sailing yachts have the same facilities as similar sized motor yachts.”

CRUISING GROUNDS
2
4 5 3
F IVE FAVOR IT E S POTS A poll of Northrop & Johnson charter clients revealed that almost every client has cruised in the Mediterranean or the Caribbean, but an overwhelming majority were clear that if offered the chance to explore the remote waters of the Antarctic or cruise through the Northwest Passage they would jump on board. The top five cruising grounds of choice, however, remain the traditional cruising grounds, for the following reasons:
1 French Riviera It may not be surprising to hear that the most popular cruising area for many is along the coastline of the French Riviera. The favored ports-of-call varied between St. Tropez and Monaco, with the social scene in these two famous yachting hotspots drawing clients back year after year.
2 Dalmatian Coast Just a few opted for the Dalmatian Coast, but those who did raved at the stunning backdrops that Dubrovnik, Hvar and Split provide. The cruising grounds of Croatia offer a quieter destination than the Western Mediterranean, with breathtaking coastal scenery and hundreds of islands to discover.
3 The Grenadines When it comes to cruising in the Caribbean, the Grenadines offer some of the most idyllic, unspoiled islands in the archipelago. Their combination of steady trade winds, short cruising distances, and natural harbors make them a firm favorite for families and sailing yacht charters.
4 The Bahamas Thanks to their close proximity to East Coast of the United States and their year-round balmy climate, The Bahamas are one of the preferred winter cruising grounds for the majority of Northrop & Johnson’s clients, while they also ranked high as a summer destination in 2021. With some 700 islands and uninhabited cays spread across shallow waters, The Bahamas—in particular the Exumas—are home to more than 30 diving destinations, unspoiled reefs, shallow fishing waters and fantastic beaches. It is no wonder they are so popular.
5 British Virgin Islands The British Virgin Islands were seemingly made for the waterborne, and our clients certainly agree. The most popular cruising area for families with young children and those cruising aboard a sailing yacht is the Sir Francis Drake channel. Here, sailing between islands is never more than a few hours and the steady easterly trade winds and abundance of sheltered coves provide perfect cruising conditions.
K E E L L I F E N A V I G A T O R K N O W S
“I actually own a classic sailing yacht, but I recently chartered HANS EXPLORER and cruised along the coastline of Antarctica,” says the charterer of the 158-foot (48m) exploration vessel. “It has to have been the ultimate adventure. Indelible memories of my time on board include the magical light at night as we cruised in the height of the Antarctic summer.”
3 9
06 The stunning 108-foot (33m) DOPAMINE is sportier, faster and more efficient than other yachts in her range with enhanced technology that is second to none.
Those looking to explore more of the coastline of the French Riviera or island-hop through The Bahamas’ Exumas had a preference for smaller performance motor yachts. “We regularly charter in winter in the Exumas, and this winter we are looking forward to cruising aboard the brand new Mangusta DOPAMINE,” says a charter client. “A few summers have been spent cruising between Monaco and Cannes on board VENI VIDI VICI, stopping for lunch at anchor in the Lérins Islands before dinner in Cap-Ferrat.”
07 The 130-foot (39.6m) VENI VIDI VICI is the perfect performance yacht for cruising the coastline and islands of the Côte d’Azur.

“IT HAS TO HAVE BEEN THE ULTIMATE ADVENTURE. INDELIBLE MEMORIES OF MY TIME ON BOARD INCLUDE THE MAGICAL LIGHT AT NIGHT AS WE CRUISED IN THE HEIGHT OF THE ANTARCTIC SUMMER.”

Party, Celebration – the very words conjure up images of glamor, with champagne corks popping and dancing on deck under the stars, while lookers-on prop up at the bar. Indeed, whether enjoying a party, a sunset cocktail, aperitif or night cap, the bar has to be one of the most sociable spaces on board a superyacht. From wet bars on the sundeck to sit-up bars on the beach club, to backlit bars, cozy salon bars, skylounge bars and elegant marble top bars, they come in many forms and Northrop & Johnson’s charter fleet have some of the finest bars afloat. When it comes to gourmet dining, having your own personal chef has to be one of the main attractions of a superyacht. Whether catering for an intimate group or a larger cocktail event, a few different alfresco dining options are ideal, with a variety of dining set-ups all large enough to seat the number of guests invited. The large alfresco dining spaces on board the 180-foot (55m) REVELRY are second to none in this regard. The decadent areas feature superb locations for star-studded celebrations, along with a Jacuzzi pool and massage/spa room for relaxation. For some guests, the desire for proximity to the ocean is what the yachting lifestyle is all about, and REVELRY does not disappoint. Featuring an ocean-level beach club that incorporates both lounging areas and easy access to the water by day, the stunning space can be transformed into the ultimate alfresco dining area by night. For a cutting-edge experience with a big dollop of celebrity glamor, the 164-foot (49.72m) DA VINCI is the perfect yacht. Capable of speeds of up to 38 knots, she enables guests to have breakfast in St. Tropez and lunch in Cap d’Antibes before enjoying dinner in Monaco. Comfort and entertainment are key factors during any yacht charter, and DA VINCI provides ample cool social areas for both day and night. The main deck is the preferred spot for socializing. Enjoy an early evening aperitif at the standout bar that runs the length of the main salon. With seating for up to five pre-dinner guests, you can enjoy views over the horizon through the large windows before stepping through the large sliding doors to the main deck aft to join the rest of your guests for an alfresco dinner. The following evening, mix it up and head up to the flybridge to have your sunset cocktails at the sit-up bar, before taking dinner on the foredeck, another ideal setting for dining in complete privacy while moored stern-to in a Mediterranean harbor. For those looking to host a party during an exclusive event, perhaps to get closer to the action of the Monaco Grand Prix, or to see and be seen at the glamorous Cannes Film Festival, Northrop & Johnson has some of the most exclusive superyachts available. Whether you are looking to invite guests to a large party on board with A-list performers, or planning a select dinner party with a “wow” factor, your charter broker has the best resources to organize unforgettable memories during your superyacht charter.

Despite all of these credentials and her rugged exterior styling, BOLD is still very much a luxury superyacht, and has all of the high-class facilities to give her guests the best possible superyacht charter experience. 01 Yacht-inspired Rolls-Royce Inspired by the elegant J-Class yachts of the 1920s, the one-off-designed Rolls-Royce Boat Tail is as close to a custom superyacht build as any motor car can be. Not only is the elongated silhouette of the body painted in hues of blue that change color in different lights, the handcrafted vehicle features hand-beaten aluminum bodywork and a deck created from Caleidolegno veneer. At the rear, the boating theme becomes even more clear. With a press of a button, the “deck” opens in a sweeping butterfly form to reveal an array of treats including a dining area with two cocktail tables and stools, a champagne chest, a parasol on a telescopic arm, and everything required for an intimate party on the road. The fuss-free interior features a bespoke Bovet timepiece, a custom 15-speaker sound system, and anthracite-colored Caleidolegno veneer flooring – reinforcing the nautical theme. Akin to a superyacht, the unique model took four years to design and build by Rolls-Royce Coachbuilding team. rolls-roycemotorcars.com

02 ULYSSE NARDIN TIMEPIECES Owing to the exclusive nature of Ulysse Nardin watches, virtually every customer is a VIP, according to FrancoisXavier Hotier, the maker’s president of the Americas. Ulysse Nardin routinely hosts VIPs year-round with established programming and events, like a special trip to both the watchmaker’s workshops and facilities in Switzerland, paired with a very elite visit to the Monaco Yacht Show each year. Beyond that, Hotier himself reaches out to customers for a more bespoke response. If you become involved, it is more than likely Ulysse Nardin will reach out to you, as was the case for an actor who was interested in UN’s recent deep-diver One More Wave timepiece. He was contacted by Hotier and, as it turned out, he was involved in a production concerning the U.S. Navy’s SEAL team members. Through the watch company’s contacts (One More Wave co-designer Kyle Buckett is a former Navy SEAL), Hotier was able connect the actor to former SEAL team members to aid his research into his role. 04 JOHN LOBB SHOES While a properly maintained pair of bespoke shoes should last a lifetime, 150-year-old Jermyn Street bootmaker John Lobb can help you plan for multiple generations, or, more probably, multiple pairs in one lifetime. Its bespoke service includes the creation of artisan crafted “lasts” of your feet, hewn from long-lasting hornwood and based on a series of exact measurements. The next step is a pair of trial bespoke shoes to road test, and any alterations to the lasts are made before your final pair is created and delivered. When you want to arrange for more footwear, you don’t need to travel to London again. The lasts are stored, so your “feet” are permanently on file. Bespoke footwear from $6,500 johnlobb.com

Venice Simplon-Orient-Express, Europe London – Venice A legend in its own right, the Venice Simplon-OrientExpress is as famous a character as the countless royalty, celebrities and statesmen who have boarded its carriages. The train against which all other luxury trains are measured, the Orient Express invites passengers to step back in time to the Golden Age of travel as they are whisked towards Venice. Residing in the original cabins— rest assured, restored and furnished to ensure modern standards of comfort—you will be treated to a heady taste of the 1920s, with original Art Deco marquetry and shimmering glass panels. Board the train in London and enjoy a few days of stunning travel through the landscapes surrounding Paris, Innsbruck and Verona. During the day the passing scenery is compelling, as city landmarks give way to rolling countryside and snow-capped mountains. As night draws in, the plush carriages are lit by subtle lighting, creating a romantic ambiance as you dine on fine cuisine in one of the restaurant cars. After dinner, head to the Bar Car for an evening of music and cocktails as the train gently clatters on through the night. Wake up early and find yourself in the most stunning of alpine settings as you cross the Alps, then as the carriages ease into Venice in a cloud of steam, rest assured your next embarkation will be a worthy reflection as you step aboard your charter yacht and head off on a cruise across the Adriatic. Rovos Rail’s Pride of Africa, South Africa Pretoria – Cape Town South Africa’s Rovos Rail operates on a number of routes, but for train aficionados in the know, the route from Pretoria to Cape Town is a must. Step aboard and you are immediately transported to a bygone era of travel as you glide through the majestic landscapes of South Africa, surrounded by Edwardian-style furnishing and colonial glamor. Relax over breakfast in the Victorian dining car, take in the views from the train’s open-air balconies in the observation car, then sink into a wing-tipped chair with an aperitif as you await the dinner gong. The journey takes passengers through the grasslands of Highveld to the desert of Great Karoo and on through to the Cape Winelands before disembarking in Cape Town, all the while passing jaw-dropping scenery and wildlife.

04 1000 Miglia, Brescia to Rome (and back), Italy May 16-22 Reborn in 1977 as an open-road scramble for classic and vintage sports cars, the Mille Miglia held its place as a proper endurance race from 1927 to 1957. Participation in the modern spectacle is limited to cars produced before 1957 that either competed in or were registered for the original races, so getting to drive in the Mille Miglia is a very competitive proposition, indeed. Luxury car makers like Alfa Romeo, BMW, Ferrari, Maserati, Mercedes Benz and Porsche occasionally offer a driving/ride-along experience in the race to some of their best customers (start sweet-talking your local dealers now), but seeing the snorting, raucous vintage cars rip through an Italian village as a spectator on the route is one of the best ways to experience the legendary event. Selecting the right yacht Most superyachts have certain things in common, but they are all unique and offer a range of features. Selecting a yacht to suit the size and character of your charter party can therefore appear to be something of a minefield. A traditional motor yacht is ideal for a family group, for example, while a sailing yacht is perhaps better suited to a yachting enthusiast. Added to this, most charter yachts only operate within specific cruising grounds chosen by the owner. Although there are no hard and fast rules as to which to choose first—yacht or cruising area—the time of year you wish to charter and the location you want to travel to will largely determine the yachts available. If this is your first yacht charter, you may want to aim for a tried-and-tested cruising ground— somewhere in the Mediterranean, for example, or the Caribbean—with every facility on hand and a wide selection of available yachts to choose from. Chartering with family or large groups of friends is also about having fun, so look at the water toys and entertainment facilities available. The makeup and nationality of the captain and crew is also key.
02
Choosing your cruising ground The best cruising grounds for family charters tend to be those with great beaches, warm climates and safe waters. The Bahamas, for example, are ideal for family yacht charters as their shallow waters provide guests with ample opportunities for snorkeling and diving, while all the islands are close in proximity, allowing for short crossings between each anchorage and minimal cruising time. The same goes for the British Virgin Islands. If you are planning a summer charter, consider the cruising grounds of the Western Mediterranean. With countless islands and mainland harbors to choose from, plenty of distractions ashore and cuisine to suit all tastes, this area is popular for all types of charter, including families and groups of friends. For those with older children, the Pacific Northwest guarantees great memories, with aweinspiring terrain to encounter and fantastic wildlife, as does Scandinavia, Australia, and New Zealand, to name a few. If you are considering a more adventurous charter, choose based on your preferred time of year, as many cruising grounds are inhospitable off-season.

If you are chartering a yacht with friends, it might be the cuisine and dining that appeals most, and many cruising grounds are famed for their fine gourmet fare. The Western Mediterranean, in particular, the Côte d’Azur or Amalfi Coast, for example, would be an ideal choice for a gourmet-style charter, with some of the world’s best restaurants located along their coastlines. Of course, the chef on board your yacht will also play a major role in creating a memorable charter experience for you, by introducing you to the fresh local ingredients used to make regional specialties and creating your own personalized menu on request. 03 04

Those fascinated by history might enjoy a charter in some of the Mediterranean’s cultural hotspots, including the southern coast of Turkey, the Greek islands, or the east coast of Croatia, all of which are steeped in history and provide interesting day trips ashore. Or, perhaps you are simply keen to try new water sports, or looking to experiment with a new activity in some of the most stunning settings in the world. Mountain biking through the pine forests of New Zealand, or quad biking through the sands of Mexico? Or, perhaps staying on the water and kayaking through the Norwegian fjords, or deep-sea fishing for marlin in the South Pacific? Simply gather as many ideas as you can regarding the type of charter, and when and where you think you’d like to go, and leave the rest to the experts. The following guide brings you a selection of the different types of facilities that might appeal, so browse through for some charter inspiration and let the fun commence.

Fun For All the Family All Together Now A superyacht provides the perfect setting for a family holiday. Aside from being a fun and social space to bring everyone together, it offers privacy, security and endless activities for children. Northrop & Johnson’s charter experts recommend a selection of fabulous, family-friendly yachts to charter this winter.
Yacht Type Large modern motor yachts are the most popular and suitable for families, first-time charterers, or large family groups. Due to their capacity for interior and exterior volume, they are equipped with peerless watersports equipment and entertainment facilities for all ages to enjoy. They usually come in the form of a fulldisplacement hull design, which also allows for greater stability. Of course, all types of yachts can lend themselves well to a family charter, whether it be a classic motor yacht or an expedition yacht, or perhaps a modern sailing yacht with all the amenities of a motor yacht but with the added appeal of sailing. When it comes to sailing with younger children, a catamaran—such as the 100-foot (30.48m) ALLURES or the 76-foot (23.29m) THUNDERBOLT— is an ideal choice. Not only do catamarans offer more stability than a single-hull sailing yacht, there is also more space. And, the “trampoline” between the hulls is a great spot for younger children to burn off some energy.
Layout Yachts with flexible accommodation layouts can make a difference when considering family charters. The 180-foot (55m) REVELRY, for example, offers the principal charterer a master stateroom on the main deck with a twin cabin located behind, which is ideally suited for small children. The lower deck is home to the yacht’s remaining four staterooms, comprising two twins and two doubles, making her layout ideal for multi-generational family charters. The dynamic layout aboard the 163-foot (49.68m) CASINO ROYALE allows for 12 guests in six staterooms, one of which includes a single bed that is perfect for families traveling with young children and a nanny. The 130-foot (39.61m) LIONSHARE offers a similar setup featuring a twin stateroom with a Pullman berth that is ideally suited for children, teens or a nanny. Out on deck she offers plenty of space for alfresco dining, relaxing and socializing, including an outdoor cinema for the children to watch while adults relax—perhaps with a treatment from the on-board masseuse.

Activities Superyachts also have the benefit of garage-loads of water toys, adding a fun dimension to a family yacht charter. From inflatables and waterslides to diving equipment and towable toys, most yachts will carry a good selection of toys for all ages, including activities to keep everyone entertained on board. As an example, aboard the 132-foot (40.2m) WABASH, older children in the charter party can try wakeboarding, diving or even fishing, while younger children will be entertained for hours with “The Blob”. Onboard the 157-foot (47.85m) BIG SKY, a complete set of inflatables can be deployed from the swim platform to provide hours of endless fun. From a Fiesta Island lounge to a towable Lunar Chariot and a Jungle Joe climbing inflatable, the younger children will be exhausted while older children can learn a new skill with the Lift eFoil boards or Jet Flyboard, among the many other “cool” toys carried on board. The 190-foot (57.91m) SKYFALL offers 3,707 square feet of outdoor living space divided into sections to cater for different occasions, ensuring that everyone is happy. Adults and teenagers alike can challenge their friends to a game of basketball on the sundeck aft or enjoy a dip in the splashpool, while the garage is packed full of toys to keep the whole family entertained. She also boasts superb accommodations, with a split-level master and equally impressive VIP stateroom, while additional staterooms include two king-bed staterooms, a wheelchair-friendly queen-bed stateroom and a twin-bed stateroom. For easy guest access there is an elevator across all three decks.
04 05
Another yacht that will not disappoint in her toy selection is the 154-foot (46.94m) RHINO. While some of the family may prefer a more sedate activity aboard the standup paddleboards and paddle bike, those looking for an adrenalin hit should try the Big Mable towable tube or the Airhead Rip Rider towable tube, both of which provide endless fun for all ages. Crew Finally, when organizing a family charter, always ask your charter broker about the crew. An energetic crew with a reputation for engaging well with children, whatever their age, is an essential ingredient when it comes to ensuring a successful family charter. The 145-foot (44.2m) I LOVE THIS BOAT, for example, has an enthusiastic crew with a renowned reputation for going that extra mile. Added to this she boasts a plethora of water toys, including a giant slide and a good audio-visual system for quiet time when the sun is at its hottest. Whatever your preference, the highlighted yachts are just a selection from the fleet available for family-charters through Northrop & Johnson.

The Silver Screen Entertainment For All Advances in audiovisual equipment and entertainment has led to an increase in cinema rooms and alfresco movie setups on board superyachts. Providing perfect entertainment for all ages, some of the larger yachts boast their own home theater, while others offer alfresco movie options. Judging from the following examples, the growing trend for entertainment is here to stay.
O N
Cinema spaces for large-scale viewing now rate among the most popular onboard features. They provide entertainment for shelter from the midday sun or during inclement weather and long passages. For alfresco film nights, more and more yachts now have either dedicated spaces for true cinematic style, flexible movie setups, or pop-up outdoor screens for guests to enjoy. With the advances in technology allowing for digital libraries with almost every feature film, including the latest releases, it is no surprise that charterers now request cinemas as one of their preferred criteria. When it comes to the style of cinema, larger yachts are able to allocate the space for dedicated cinema rooms—some even offer tiered seating with reclining armchairs and a monster screen for a truly cinematic experience. It really depends on the tastes of their owners and the way they prefer to use their yachts. The 203-foot (62m) RoMA, for example, has a dedicated cinema room that incorporates a twinkling fiber optic starscape on the wall that mimics the night sky above. When it comes to the alfresco lifestyle that yachting is all about, it is no surprise that watching films outdoors has also proved popular with many charter guests. To meet demand, several yachts now feature cinema setups on their exterior decks for screenings. The 164-foot (44.99m) VICTORIA DEL MAR’s sundeck offers a large Jacuzzi, sunpads and alfresco dining. There is also a bar, making this space a favorite for guests by day and by night, especially when the space is converted to an outdoor theater with a 100-inch screen.
T H E V I E W B O A R D C I N E M
The yachts themselves don’t need to be large, or indeed modern, to offer a cinema experience. The 116-foot (35.42m) classic ALHAMBRA, for example, offers a large sundeck that is perfect for socializing, enjoying sundowners and, when it gets dark, watching a movie on the large cinema screen while seated in one of the two large lounge areas. There is also a bar for interval refreshments. Alternatively, the bridge deck on board the 130-foot (39.61m) LIONSHARE hosts a large table for alfresco dining, lounging and movie watching. Enjoy dinner and then simply kick back and relax on the loungers as the area is transformed into an outdoor cinema.
9 5
02 Enjoy the snug, dedicated cinema room aboard RoMA 03 Host an alfresco movie night aboard ALHAMBRA
The variety of styles in cinemas generally reflects the tastes of their owners and the way they like to use their yacht’s spaces. To suit those who do not wish to give up space to a dedicated cinema room but are looking to meet the demands of charterers, a number of yachts can transform the main salon or skylounge into an atmospheric cinema, complete with a high-end surround sound system for a truly memorable experience. The 163-foot (49.68m) CASINO ROYALE, for example, boasts more than 4,500 movie titles in its collection to be viewed on any of the large screens on board—plenty to keep any movie buff entertained.

The desire for close proximity to the ocean is what the yachting lifestyle is all about and the trend for the ultimate indoor/outdoor lifestyle continues unabated. Designers have found ever more inventive ways to create beach clubs, terraces and balconies that provide a relaxing space on board, with some of the larger yachts incorporating bars and lounge areas, and even spas and gyms. Many of the smaller yachts in the fleet still manage to incorporate some form of swim platform or beach club area, allowing for easy access to the water. From waterside dining to chic beach clubs, the following are just a selection of yachts offering the height of style. The Ultimate Private Retreat Cantilevered sea terraces or balconies off the master, or in some cases the VIP, have become de rigeur in recent years as the appetite of owners looking for more space grows. Aside from the privacy they can provide, they also allow for natural light, fresh ocean breeze and uninterrupted views. The expansive master suite aboard the 189-foot (57.6m) W offers on-water living at its finest. One of the most striking features is the suite’s private balcony—the perfect spot for morning coffee or a retreat to enjoy a good book and some quiet time. The stunning 164-foot (50m) CHASING DAYLIGHT is one of the most popular charter yachts afloat, and understandably so. Guests of the lead charterer need not be envious of the stunning king-bed master stateroom when the king-size VIP has its own private terrace area. An ideal place for breakfast, a spot of yoga or simply to watch the world go by in peace, her accommodations are second to none. A catamaran sailing yacht does not naturally spring to mind when you are looking for a vessel with a terrace or balcony, but with its own private terrace over the water, the 76-foot (23.29m) THUNDERBOLT’s master stateroom is an oasis of luxury. She also boasts a swim platform that, at the flick of a switch, unfolds from her stern, allowing guests to hop off the yacht for a swim or to enjoy her toy box.

Something for Everyone For those looking for a luxurious and exclusive way to vacation with all the family, a superyacht is an unrivaled option. Providing the perfect base for a multi-generational escape, it allows for peace of mind and a sense of seclusion that is sorely missed in the current travel environment. Space is arguably the most coveted luxury aboard a large yacht, and in this regard, a number of the yachts available for charter offer everything required for a fun-filled family vacation. From a variety of easily converted cabins—perfect for children and nannies—to separate lounging and dining areas, indoor and outdoor cinemas, and even a spa, there is a charter yacht to suit every requirement. Added to this, the toy collections, professional and friendly crew, and endless entertainment options and fun at sea is guaranteed for everyone. Sun-Drenched Bahamas The yacht may be perfect for your family set up, but the cruising grounds can also make or break the charter experience. The most suitable waters for family charters are those with islands in close proximity to each other. Regularly moving from place to place you never again need to suffer the dreaded “I’m bored” refrain from restless youngsters. Perfect for family cruising, the 700-plus Bahamian chain of islands are just 50 miles south of the U.S. coast of Florida, but offer a world of difference for the waterborne. Providing the perfect combination of fun and laid-back charm, with ample island-hopping opportunities, they allow for a new vibe every day. Begin your charter in the cosmopolitan capital of Nassau, before cruising off to the 100-mile string of pristine cays known as the Exumas. For those on a longer charter, Harbour Island and the Abacos further north are also prime cruising grounds for families. “In terms of highlights, I would recommend the Exuma Cays Land and Sea Park,” says Charter Broker Jessica Engelmann. “In my opinion, The Bahamas is a top charter destination, for first-time charterers and families with young children, especially.” Water Fun “The Exumas are perfect for families as they offer amazing beaches at every anchorage,” says Charter Broker Ann Landry. “Compass Cay in particular stands out from the crowd with its stunning beaches, including the long Crescent Beach where the children can have fun collecting sea fans and shells,” recommends Charter Broker Solenn de Braux. “At the marina, they can have fun taking underwater action photographs of swarms of nurse sharks while swimming among them, if they dare,” says the ex-marine biologist.

The waters surrounding the islands and cays are shallow and so clear that even those that aren’t diving enthusiasts can enjoy the marine life. The channels between the islands and cays run deep and are where divers in the charter party will find great underwater reefs with colorful sea life. When it comes to watersports, the shallow waters combined with a superyacht’s toy box adds a fun dimension for all ages. For some it might be the chance to learn a new skill, while others might embrace the opportunity to lark around with the younger children on inflatables. After all, it’s what memories are made of. “Many of my clients love to anchor off Warderick Wells Cay and Big Major’s Spot, and spend the day enjoying the yacht’s watersports equipment,” says Charter Broker Katia Zoloeva. “You can even get acquainted with and swim with the curious pigs here.” A firm favorite with charterers, PARTY GIRL offers flexible accommodations, a large beach club and plenty of water toys for all ages.

Staniel Cay is the hub for fishing activities, and several of the charter fleet carry their own fishing equipment on board. Take a walk along the scenic trails or simply tender ashore for a beach picnic. “When anchored off Compass Cay, take the tender to the spectacular horseshoe beach and relax in the islet’s natural Jacuzzi known as Rachel’s Bubble Bath,” recommends Charter Broker LeAnn Pliske. “For the young children in the charter party, most of the family-friendly yachts are experts in organizing pirate-themed treasure hunts ashore, which keeps the children entertained for hours while the adults enjoy a rum punch on the beach or back on board.”

Back on Board With so many activities on offer, younger children will be exhausted. Persuading them to have some downtime on board won’t be hard with the facilities on hand. Some yachts have dedicated cinema rooms, an for those that don’t the cinema effect can be recreated in the main salon or skylounge, or even with an alfresco movie setup. Meanwhile, the adults can relax with a treatment, perhaps, or sunset cocktails in the Jacuzzi. Junkanoo The Bahamas In The Bahamas, New Year’s celebrations continue into the early hours and throughout New Year’s Day as the worldfamous Junkanoo parades explode in all their glory of vibrance and color. Once the celebrations are over, head back on board and spend some time relaxing and preparing for the year ahead. You could even use the yacht’s facilities to kick-start your fitness regime. Where better to work out than on the decks of a superyacht with spectacular views over the ocean? The 171-foot (52.12m) NITA K II offers an alfresco gym set up and all the water toys one could desire. She also has a waterslide that goes from the dizzying heights of her sundeck, and an inflatable swimming pool platform. The endorphins will be bursting, ready to take on the year ahead. Celebrate Thanksgiving Turks & Caicos Thanksgiving is the perfect time to recharge those batteries and plan for the busy festive season ahead. For many, some of the best holiday season memories involve food. This is as true on board a superyacht as it is at home. The chefs on board superyachts are out of this world, creating feasts to suit every occasion. BACA’s five-star chef can conjure up a Thanksgiving extravaganza while you and your guests bask in the Caribbean sunshine around the Jacuzzi or in her new beach club. After the feast, while the friendly crew clear everything away, you can take advantage of the wide array of water toys, including a superyacht slide that runs from the sundeck to the alluring water below. And for those who want to watch the all-important NFL game, she also offers state-of-the-art entertainment systems.

Fantastic Onboard Facilities Grenadines As with any charter, a festive charter itinerary is bespoke to you and your guests, incorporating all the elements that are important to you. Choosing where to cruise can be one of the most appealing elements, but the yacht’s facilities also play a key role in the overall experience, especially in areas that remain isolated and unspoiled, such as the Grenadines. Here, many of the islands and islets are uninhabited, so you may not see another soul for days. However, with all the facilities required to keep you entertained for days on end, you will feel thoroughly satisfied. The perennially popular MILESTONE, for example, offers fantastic facilities to keep all the guests occupied. Whether messing about on her many water toys, relaxing on her sumptuous sundeck, watching a movie in her skylounge or dancing on her dancefloor, every whim is catered for. Seasonal Celebrations Antigua Each Caribbean island is unique, with special traditions and celebrations, but wherever you cruise, the buzz of the holiday season is palatable. Steeped in century-old traditions, Antigua’s festive activities for the Christmas holidays stem from the island’s European and African heritage and include carol trees, highlanders (dressing like Scottish Highlander soldiers and dancing), stilt-walkers and seasonal “jump-ups”. Come December, Antigua’s average temperature is in the high 70s and guests can make the most of the warm weather onboard the 189-foot (57.6m) W. With acres of deck space, she is designed for outdoor living and boasts a choice of sunbathing areas. Spend the morning relaxing on the sundeck, then enjoy the islands’ celebrations.
04 The 146-foot (44.5m) MILESTONE is packed to the brim with amenities to keep every guest entertained

01 The Côte d’Azur Without a doubt the Côte d’Azur remains a must-visit summer cruising ground for anyone who considers themselves a bonafide charterer. From the jet-set glamor of Monaco and Cannes to idyllic Provençal villages perched high in the hills, no other coastline in the world offers such variety for the waterborne. Based in the South of France, Charter Broker Fiona Maureso knows these cruising grounds well. “While cruising along the coastline of the French Riviera, be sure to drop anchor around the Îles d’Hyères,” recommends Fiona. “Take the tender ashore to explore the low-key islands of Porquerolles and PortCros; both national parks and car-free, they can be discovered by bicycle or on foot. Lunch or dinner at Le Mas du Langoustier is highly recommended.” A E

02 The Amalfi Coast Italy’s Amalfi Coast has been a magnet for travelers since the days of the Grand Tour. This sun-drenched coastline continues to attract the waterborne to this day. Boasting innumerable treasures of Renaissance, Baroque and Roman remains, the entire region provides a stunning backdrop for an awe-inspiring itinerary. “Most charters tend to take in the island of Capri, but neighboring Ischia is well worthy of the diversion,” says Charter Broker Sophie Aubertin. “Renowned for its thermal springs, the island has inspired the countless artists, musicians and writers attracted to its stunning landscape over the centuries.” A

03 The Balearics The Spanish golden isles are among the Mediterranean’s most popular cruising grounds, attracting superyachts to enjoy the scenic coves and secluded beaches that dot the coastlines. From Mallorca and Menorca to Ibiza and Formentera, the islands combine centuries of Spanish culture with modern glamor. “Mallorca’s west coast offers a more relaxed pace of life,” says Palma-based Charter Broker Natascha Weber. “It is less crowded than the popular sandy beaches to the north and south of the island. Here, you will find a backdrop of cliffs that plunge into the deep blue crystal-clear waters south west, with small stone houses, olive and pine trees and amazing sunsets." A E

04 The Dalmatian Coast The past decade has seen Croatia’s cruising grounds rise in popularity to a firm favorite of the superyacht set looking for a refreshing alternative to the Western Mediterranean’s hot spots. With its well preserved medieval towns and red-roofed buildings, the southern Dalmatian Coast harbors a hodgepodge of cultures ashore, while northern Dalmatia features the stunning Kornati archipelago. The latter in particular is a haven for the waterborne, with numerous coves and bays for sheltered anchorages in the Kornati National Park. Charter Broker LeAnn Pliske has been organizing charter itineraries in the Adriatic for more than 20 years. “I find that many clients like to begin their charter in the enchanting city of Venice, before cruising across the Adriatic to trace the Croatian coastline southwards,” she says. “This allows them to explore the country’s beautiful national parks and step ashore to explore the medieval walled cities of Dubrovnik, Split and Trogir, among other smaller towns of equal appeal.” A

05 New England Considered to be the home of yachting in North America, New England has an appealingly diverse coastline that offers an endless supply of attractions, activities and hospitality. From Connecticut to Maine, rolling hills give way to quaint fishing villages spread over 70,000 square miles of stunning coast and countryside. Clapboard buildings reflect strong colonial influences, seaside towns portray their boat building heritage, and the Atlantic beaches and colorful fishing harbors offer an old-world charm. Superyachts come from far and wide to visit the lively waterfront and ornate mansions of Newport and the exclusive Martha’s Vineyard, however, be sure not to miss the island of Nantucket. “Nantucket is quintessential New England at its best,” says Charter Broker Jessica Engelmann. “It has retained the same charm since the 19th century, when it was the whaling capital of the world.”
06 The Pacific Northwest Boasting diverse and breathtaking scenery, the hauntingly beautiful waters of the Inside Passage of Alaska provide the ultimate cruising grounds for those looking for an adrenaline-filled charter. Snaking up between the mainland and off-lying islands of southeast Alaska, the waters team with humpback whales, seals and orcas, while bald eagles and brown bears call the shorelines home. Charter Broker Amy Wachmann, who grew up in the Pacific Northwest, recommends beginning your charter in the capital of Juneau and cruising through the wilds of America’s 49th state, taking in the fjords and glaciers. “Cruise the 25-mile Tracy Arm Fjord alongside waterfalls into Holkham Bay,” Amy recommends. “Later on, anchor in Warm Springs Bay and tender ashore to hike up to Baranof Warm Springs where you can bathe in the natural hot springs.”

07 The Cyclades Lying in a circle at the heart of the Aegean, the islands of the Cyclades sparkle with infinite appeal. Their steady winds, dramatic landscape and natural harbors make them an idyllic sailing destination. Each island is unique and surprisingly different, but one thing they all have in common is the astonishing wealth of historical sites and architectural wonders left by ancient civilizations over the course of five millennia. From the cosmopolitan Mykonos and Santorini to the lesser-known Paros and Naxos, the islands abound with simplicity and charm.

Ideally, you should book any charter at least six months in advance in order to secure your preferred yacht. However, bear in mind that some of the more popular charter yachts cruising in the traditional cruising grounds in July or August, for example, may be booked up to a year in advance.

SCOPE
01 Daniel Ziriakus Honored Northrop & Johnson is delighted that President and COO Daniel Ziriakus has been bestowed the esteemed 40 Under 40 honor by the South Florida Business Journal. One of 40 individuals under the age of 40 “who have made an impact in their field of expertise, in their community and at their companies throughout the last year,” Daniel was selected by a panel of advisors and the members of the South Florida Business Journal editorial staff from hundreds of nominations. Since 2014, Daniel has helped grow Northrop & Johnson from a mid-size, US-based yacht brokerage to the world’s leading superyacht agency with an impressive global reach. He has been integral in the evolution of Northrop & Johnson, spearheading various cross-departmental initiatives that helped bolster the brand, resulting in double-digit growth in revenue every year since he took the position. 02 Northrop & Johnson Partners with Penfolds Northrop & Johnson, the leader in luxury yachting and lifestyle, has announced a new partnership with premier luxury wine producer, Penfolds. Through the partnership, Penfolds will offer exclusive access to special products and events for Northrop & Johnson clients, and both brands will collaborate on unique events for their shared clientele. Born of a pioneering spirit in 1844, Penfolds has manifested a lasting legacy of patience, commitment, courage and passion. Today, 177 years after it was founded, the house remains one of Australia’s most revered as it honors and celebrates traditional winemaking values while cultivating great new traditions for the next generations. 03 Bull Days Tuscany Reloaded 2021 Wrap Up Lamborghini owners and guests converged on the dazzling Italian region of Tuscany, July 2 to 4, 2021 for Bull Days Tuscany Reloaded. Northrop & Johnson was delighted to be in attendance as an official partner for the event. Hosted by the Lamborghini Club Italia, this exceptional event was a one-of-a-kind experience in and around the historic city of Florence that brought together 62 Lamborghinis and 120 guests. The weekend began with an opening ceremony at the host hotel, Hotel Villa Olmi Firenze. Guests then took to the streets in their Lamborghinis for a roadshow through the roads of Florence. Saturday provided perfect weather for the Tuscany Roadshow with stunning scenery at every turn through the territory of Val d’Elsa. As guests made their way through the rural oasis of Chianti they were blessed with rolling hills and scenic vineyards. At noon everyone met in the locality of Fiano di Certaldo at Tenuta di Sticciano – Fonti Resort where the afternoon was spent enjoying wine and all the resort has to offer. In the evening, everyone donned their best for the gala dinner at the magnificent Forte di Belvedere. On the final day of Bull Days Tuscany Reloaded, the Lamborghinis enjoyed the spotlight while parked at the famed Piazza del Duomo. The weekend ended with a lovely lunch at the Hotel Villa Cappugi.
