NAVIGATOR HOLIDAY 2022 14
It’s all a dance
It was a bumpy ride. The short trip between St. Maarten and St. Barths was not a long one, but the seas were four-to-six feet with a few swells in the eight-to-ten-foot range, and I found myself wondering how the crew could go about their business as though they were on terra firma. They bustled around, checking on guests and making preparations for lunch to be table-ready on arrival.
I positioned myself on the flybridge, finding the fresh air made me feel less queasy. I was stymied when the chief stew spontaneously appeared with a bubbling glass of ginger ale to swap for my untouched Rosé. “How do you do it?” I asked.
She held up the wine glass. “Your ice was melted, and you weren’t drinking it. And you looked a little pale, I thought—” I interrupted her. “Not the ginger ale, the seas. Don’t you need to sit down when it gets this rough?” She widened her stance with a slight bend to her knees, then waved her free hand like an orchestra conductor. “It’s a dance,” she said. “Once you get the rhythm, you count it out in your head and move with tempo. It takes practicelike anything - but I’ve had plenty.” She walked toward the stairs, then turned. No, scratch that. She pirouetted and came back to say, “If it makes you feel any better, James, our new deckhand, is lying in the crew mess and has turned a stunning shade of green. I’ll go ask the captain how much longer to calm water.” I’m a little embarrassed to say that it did make me feel a bit better, knowing I was not the only one changing color. But the chief stew’s strategy for being unaffected by the tumult resonates with me to this day. “It’s a dance.”
It’s all a dance, isn’t it? As we head into the holidays, it is an ideal time to reflect on the previous year. Despite the irregular rhythm of the last two years, in 2022, Northrop & Johnson added twenty-nine new team members, opened five new offices, onboarded two new global partners, and won the South Florida Business Journal’s Best Places to Work award for the second year in a row, all while having a record-setting year for sales and charter.
The yacht market, like the ocean, is a fluid environment. The post-lockdown travel frenzy had our clients eager to feast on trips to far-away lands early in the summer. As those appetites have become sated, outside factors have contributed to some patches of rough water, yet there is a tempo to the tune, and we’re here to guide you. Among the acquisitions of 2022 were two yacht management companies, which we brought into our fold to enhance our signature 360-degree service.
It’s the holidays, so let our well-choreographed team take the lead. With our inventory of charter and brokerage yachts, there are lots of opportunities to ring in the holidays in any corner of the globe you choose. What I like best about this time of year is the happiness of it all. It’s that lull from the practical, mundane drone of the day-to-day, a time to recharge and reboot on a spiritual level while celebrating the joy and magic of the season.
In this issue of Navigator, we’ll step aboard the Yacht Silver Lining for a custom tour. Then, we’ll sit down with GF Entertainment to preview what’s new in exclusive and experiential entertainment. And along the way, we will spark ideas for your holiday gift list, let you in on some of our favorite family charter experiences, look ahead to the hot harbors for 2023, and suggest ways to make your next charter a force for good. There is much to be learned in the pages ahead. One, two, three - one, two, three…Shall we dance?

PARTY TIME

From masquerade balls to rocking parties, a superyacht provides the ultimate platform to host a decadent affair or chic celebration. THE EXPERTS
GF Entertainment
GF Entertainment is the go-to luxury entertainment company specializing in providing unique experiences for ultra-high-networth (UHNW) clients around the world. Revolutionizing the onboard experience with top-tier entertainment, its team of experts can design, plan, manage and execute exclusive events to exceed all expectations.

Let’s start off with a typical superyacht party concept. Is there a typical request?
EA Yes definitely. We’re always getting requests for DJs and roaming acts like magicians and party bands, particularly for yachts cruising the Mediterranean during the summer. The recent summer season saw the demand for these types of requests soar as people finally had the opportunity to celebrate milestone birthdays and events.
What are the most outlandish requests you have had?
EA There really are so many, but due to NDAs I can’t discuss any details. I can, however, give an example of a request we had just recently. At 1 am, while on charter, a client contacted GF Entertainment to request seven bottles of Don Julio 1942. With supply nearly impossible to find due to Brexit, not to mention the incredibly high demand for these bottles, this was a tough ask. Fortunately, we succeeded. We don’t usually act as a concierge, but due to our relationship with the client, we were happy to help.
What sort of themed parties have you organized?
EA From New York speakeasy vibes to safari-style occasions, themed parties are a lot of fun to provide entertainment for. One of my favorites was a 60th birthday party commissioned through the amazing Michelle Kelly of Pocketful of Dreams on behalf of her client. The client wanted the official, current cast of The Lion King. Contract and daily performances meant that they could not perform privately, so we organized for previous cast members to perform. A unique ensemble of actors and dancers came together to create a completely bespoke show just for the client. Watching it all come together and experiencing the look of amazement on the client’s face during a special rendition of “Circle of Life” was nothing short of magical.

How important a role does the cuisine take in organizing a celebration?
EA The cuisine is extremely important. After all, everyone loves good food, so much so that we have curated an entertainment experience based solely around cuisine called “Memories.” This experience pairs a selection of dedicated composed piano pieces with small-bite culinary signature masterpieces. The aim is to present guests with an unparalleled, multi-sensory culinary experience. The synergy between food and music is effectively shaped by the music that is synchronized to each of the tasting events: Seeing, Smelling, Pre-tasting and After-tasting. Each masterpiece is titled to represent lifetime events like “first kiss,” “first teddy bear,” “first jump into the deep water,” “mama’s perfume,” etc.…
Can you give examples of ways to wow even with a smaller, more intimate celebration?
EA For us, it’s all about creating unique experiences and lasting memories, and often these can only be achieved with your nearest and dearest. We recently created an experience we call the “Immersive Piano Add-on Experience” – the ultimate luxury filmwatching experience on board, alfresco, beneath the stars. This is an exclusive one-of-a-kind film night where an owner or charter principal picks one of their favorite films and awardwinning, official Steinway artist Vincent Corver plays alongside the film’s original score. Vincent will guide your senses and imagination through the highs and lows – the thrills, the romance, and the tension – all while weaving his own playfulness and personality into the film at the most wonderfully unexpected moments. In addition, if you have your own personal films
or favorite memories that you want to show off – a family documentary, graduations or even your daughter’s wedding video, Corver can create an entirely bespoke piece of music just for those special moments. Think of it as your own private, completely personalized film party. There’s nothing more intimate than that.
How would you throw a party that gets noticed even during larger events such as the Monaco Grand Prix or Cannes Film Festival?
EA For this year’s Monaco Grand Prix, we provided the official F1 Experiences team with entertainment on board both of their yachts: the M/Y ELENI and M/Y SIROCCO. One of our best DJs, who really knows how to read a crowd, created a unique and buzzing atmosphere and the party will no doubt be a lasting memory for all the guests on board.
However, it is the attention to detail that counts. Creating a buzz around the party prior to the doors opening is always very important. Anything that sets tongues wagging in advance is typically underestimated, but this is what makes your event a success before the event has even started. Little things like massive balloon deliveries, activities, close protection personnel, provisions, the welcome, photography, and décor, all combine to ensure a memorable occasion. In saying that, not every client who hosts a party onboard a yacht during these large events wants to get noticed. Quite the opposite, as a matter of fact. During the Cannes Film Festival, you will never know which yacht a Hollywood star is partying aboard, unless you are invited, of course.

PARTY CHECKLIST
Type of yacht
There are many facets of a yacht that, when combined, will determine the type of party. Most charter yachts lend themselves to any type of occasion; however, guest numbers will vary depending on the size. Talk to your charter expert about the type of event you are looking to throw, and they will be able to recommend the most suitable yacht to suit the occasion.
Cruising grounds
Where you are cruising might determine the type of celebration, be it remote and therefore more of an intimate occasion or quayside in a popular and easily accessible port.
Cuisine
A tasty menu will wow your guests. From alfresco dining to cocktails and canapes, there are a number of open-air dining options on a superyacht. If the occasion requires a formal dining set-up, then make sure the guest lists match the seating capacity.
Drinks
Ensure you have enough, and that they are free-flowing.
Music
Music sets the tone for any event, but it needs to be right for the crowd. From A-listers to DJs, ensure the tunes keep coming and the sound system is of the best quality.
Décor
It’s all in the detail, and your superyacht crew will have plenty of ideas, but for larger events, it’s best to bring in the experts for that wow factor.
Guest list
Consider numbers. 100 – 120 guests are considered the tipping point for larger gatherings, while fewer guests mean more quality time to socialize.
Gifts
From embossed shoe bags to scented candles, ensure your guests leave with mementos to remind them of the coolest bash in town.

What would you suggest to make your party the best yacht fiesta in St. Barths to ring in the New Year?
DS There isn’t just one single thing I would suggest. The goal of any evening is to make the guests feel something special, that’s what will make the event memorable. To do this, we carefully break down our evenings into phases, each complementing the one before. One of our favorites that never fails is “Music and Magic.” The evening begins with “Immersion” with critically acclaimed illusionist Tony Steward. Stirring the guests’ imagination and evoking excitement, the show encourages guests to collaborate with each other. As guests try to make sense of what they have just witnessed (and taken part in), food is served, after which is perhaps music from an acoustic band. For larger yacht parties, it’s worth considering booking an A-List singer or performer. Why not see if you can get one of your favorites or someone special to your guests?
After all, if celebrating NYE on a yacht in St. Barths isn’t an excuse to splash out, then I don’t know when is.
Then perhaps a DJ to really get things going and build anticipation for the midnight countdown. We have a range of successful independent DJs, and access to the world’s leading A-List DJs, including Black Coffee, Craig David, and Marco Carola, to mention just a few. Then, as the clock strikes midnight, invite (and encourage) guests to grab their swimwear and start the new year with a splash.
What essentials do you believe a yacht needs for: a largescale celebration / an intimate party / formal-style occasion / cocktail event?
EA I know it might sound lame or mundane, but the key to a successful event, whether it be a cocktail, a large party with David Guetta performing or a simple yet elegant dinner, is keeping the client’s experience at the forefront of our decisions, running a tight ship (pardon the pun), and making sure we are organized to the “T.”

At 164’ (49.99m), SILVER LINING was laid out for lifestyle living and exceeds expectations in every way. Perfectly poised for both private use and charter, she boasts a precision layout combining style with space and comfort. Her external design is the result of the Christensen design team, with an interior by Carol Williamson & Associates, who together have created a relaxed home feel as well as a statement of style.
Everything about SILVER LINING’s interior oozes elegance; opulent materials, intricate stonework separated by silk-finishes and black American Walnut, are ingeniously employed throughout. Large windows on her main deck flood her sumptuous interior with natural light, and promise unspoiled views wherever she sails. The stunning skylounge boasts equally impeccable views and amenities, including a large sunken bar with a marble top and multiple seating areas. Her vast master suite can be found taking up a full-beam position on the main deck, and a full-width VIP stateroom, two king staterooms and two double staterooms with lavish en-suite bathrooms in impressive marble. Added to this, her two double staterooms offer an additional single bed and Pullman for added flexibility. With an elevator servicing all four decks, guests can enjoy a multitude of secluded zones and entertainment areas, depending on their mood.
Moving outside, there are several feature spaces. The sprawling sundeck includes a 10-person Jacuzzi and sunpads situated forward. This deck is spectacularly set up for both relaxation and entertainment with a unique three-section layout: aft of the Jacuzzi area is a full bar with seating for nine, TV screen, barbecue and a comfortable seating area for cocktails, while the aft deck is where guests can lie back, relax and soak in the rays. Next down is the bridge deck – the perfect place to enjoy alfresco meals courtesy of its large round dining table with overhead air-conditioning or heating, depending on the weather conditions. Both here, and on the main deck, well-appointed lounging areas allow maximum privacy for relaxing or entertaining as well as easy access to the swim platform and one of her many water toys. The toy list is incredible, and guests can choose from flying on the Lift eFoil board to aquatic fun on the Seabobs, Sea-Doos, and various towable toys and inflatables.
All in all, SILVER LINING is a great lifestyle yacht. The amount of space, the toys, the style – this is a 164’ with 196’ features.

FINANCING YACHT CONSTRUCTION

38 KEEL LIFE NORTHERN TRUST 01
“Yacht” can mean something different to almost anyone who says it or hears it. From a 440’ (134m) superyacht with global range and two helipads to a 35’ (10.6m) sailboat to take around nearby harbors on summer weekends, one thing all these vessels have in common is owners who prize the freedom and adventure of time spent aboard.
In 2021, yacht brokers saw a surge in participation and interest, driven by recent years’ strong wealth creation, cheap capital and a sudden and powerful desire for privacy and isolation. Last year saw sales of superyachts climb by 71 percent.* In the most successful projects, everyone on the team shares that passion, delights in digging into the engineering and imagines cruising to the unique destinations that are only accessible to the waterborne.
“You are helping them fulfill their dream,” said Jim Mays, a senior underwriter who handles yacht financing at Northern Trust. “We build a relationship, working together to turn a dream into reality.”
The right team may mean more than a better interest rate or paring weeks from a construction schedule – it may mean the difference between launching your vessel or having the project languish in avoidable disconnects among financiers, shipyards, suppliers and surveyors.
Ownership structure & operating costs
Yachts join aircraft and secondary homes as assets that are often owned by trusts or limited liability companies. These structures introduce specific requirements that can add complexity to plans. It’s not rare for annual operating expenses to reach more than 10 percent of the vessel’s purchase price, so funding those costs while observing the rules of a limited liability company or trust and also preserving other areas of lifestyle spending demands careful planning and attention to detail.
A trustee would be likely to plan for funding the yacht’s operation for the lifetime of the asset and would make sure sufficient liquidity is available when needed. That allocation should be considered in the context of other priorities, such as family members you wish to support, philanthropic intentions and the lifestyle you want to maintain.
A systematic, goals-centered approach to vetting your options will yield the best outcomes for your portfolio and wealth plan. Borrowing - rather than liquidating - assets can help keep your investment strategy intact by securing the liquidity you need for a yacht purchase while preserving your other goals. Bankers will look for information from you about both your boating history and financial situation.
“We are embarking on a relationship, and that requires good communication and understanding each other,” Mays said. “If we are working on a three-year project, we are going to get to know each other pretty well.”
Build the right team
Your crew will comprise much more than the maritime industry professionals responsible for operating your boat and keeping you safe and comfortable. Depending on your ownership structure and the complexity of your plans and vessel, you may have a large team managing many elements of the project on and off the water. From the very start of any new build process, your Northrop & Johnson broker will assist in everything from shipyard selection to yacht designers and the best maritime attorneys. Engaging with a skillful and experienced lender will leave you in a secure position to move forward with your dream. They will be familiar with loans of the scale of a yacht purchase or build, can tailor comprehensive credit solutions and will give guidance on other team members to involve in the process.

Penfolds
While it seems hard to imagine, there was a time when Australian wines were not regarded with the proper respect they deserved. Founded in 1844 by Dr. Christopher and Mary Penfold, who had some success creating wine-derived spirits like sherry and fortified wine, the charter vineyards of Penfolds wine company were planted with vine clippings the couple brought from Europe at the Magill Estate just outside Adelaide (now the spiritual home of the company). Quickly, and with Mary really running the show, Penfolds’ expressions of Reisling and claret-style wines became popular. Later, under the guidance of daughter Georgina Penfold, the operation was producing a third of all of South Australia’s wine, and setting mandates that are still the watchwords of Penfolds today: to experiment with new methods and wine production and to elevate world-class quality.
After WWII, Max Schubert became the company’s first Chief Winemaker. His experimental nature, especially in creating longer-aged vintages he encountered in Europe, led to the beginning of his Penfolds Grange efforts. By the end of the 1950s, the company established its popular shiraz wines using grapes from its own Barossa Valley vineyards to the northeast of Adelaide, as well as its storied Penfolds Bin wine programs.
Meanwhile, the stunning quality of Schubert’s Grange experiments led to an official reboot of the Penfolds Grange operation, the results of which were quickly recognized on the world stage with accolades and awards: In 1988, Schubert was named Decanter magazine’s Man of the Year.
Today, Penfolds’ offerings, and footprint, are truly global. With multiple vineyards in Australia, relatively new vineyards in California cultivating Australian vine stock to much success, and a host of varietals, styles, multi-stock and multi-location blends, all of the wines, at all price levels, are created to exacting specifications so that all can proudly wear the Penfolds label. Most wine lovers will say you can’t go wrong with any Penfolds' bottling of any accessibility or vintage. But for a selection that would both warm the heart of the late Mr. Schubert (who the wine world lost in 1994) and honor the vineyard’s legacy Bin collections, the limited edition 2016 Bin 111A Shiraz from the Barossa Valley delivers an uncannily rich, juicy mid-taste with the benefit of the expert aging practices of the Bin program. The unofficial Penfolds motto is “1844 to evermore!” One taste, and you’ll be a true believer, my friend. The Penfolds Collection 2016 Bin 111A Shiraz, $1,200; penfolds.com

LOUIS XIII
First off, a bit of simplified connoisseurship: If you distill fermented fruit (like grapes or even grape wine) you end up with an un-aged spirit commonly referred to as eau-de-vie, or more generically, brandy (or brandywine if you start with wine). If you limit yourself to grape and wine distilling, do it in the Grand Champagne area of the Cognac region, and do so under the region’s age-old and often very strict traditions of sourcing, distilling, aging and blending, you get cognac. So, while all cognacs are brandies, the reverse is simply not true. To extend that rubric, all examples of LOUIS XIII are, indeed, cognacs, but not all cognacs are LOUIS XIII – make no mistake.
Cognac is typically created from multiple sources: both operationowned vineyards and distilleries, as well as rarer, single-estate, and even single-family aged sources. The art form, so wellpracticed by LOUIS XIII, is the art of blending: Not only to create a consistent flavor profile in the final product, but to create a consistently balanced, consistently exceptional cognac. And the luxurious LOUIS XIII is, simply put, the pinnacle expression of the blenders’ art. Overseen by generations of Cellar Masters, the legacy of LOUIS XIII now lies in the hands of current Cellar Master Baptiste Loiseau, who in turn is setting aside LOUIS XIII’s finest eaux-de-vie as a legacy to his successors for the coming century.
Even just getting the chance to taste this masterful blend of up to 1,200 select individual eaux-de-vie ranging from 50 to 100 years of aging from a signature jewel-like crystal decanter puts you in a pretty rarified group of magic potion tasters. Actually owning your own bottle? Well, that literally puts you in a club: the exclusive LOUIS XIII Society. Simply register your individual decanter number, and in addition to your dose of the finest of the grape, you’ll receive a personal concierge contact and invitations to society-exclusive tastings, events and experiences. Now to that, we say “Santé.” 75cl Classic Decanter, $4,550. louisxii-cognac.com

Aston Martin DBX 707
Prices from $236,000
Yes, comfort is king on long-haul driving trips, but there’s something to be said for performance and cargo space, as well. The categoryredefining Aston Martin DBX, especially in its most recent 707 edition, makes a strong case for the formula of comfort plus driving thrills equaling motoring nirvana. Design director Marek Reichman perfectly translated the visual aggression and elegance of Aston Martin roadsters into the admittedly disappointing category name of a luxury crossover. But everything about this car counters the let-downs of the term. Upping both the horsepower (to 697hp) of the 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 and torque (to 663 ft-lbs. at a sober 2,600rpm) compared to the standard model, the DBX 707 redefines how extreme a comfortable “crossover” can be. With 23 cubic feet of stowage (54 with the back seats down), this vehicle can handle any of your luggage and accessories needs for the voyage. astonmartin.com

Mercedes-Maybach S-Class S680

You can, however, “settle” for a non-Abloh-inspired pinnacle-of-luxury sedan with a 6.0-liter 621hp V12 biturbo power plant and 4MATIC all-wheel drive and experience Mercedes-Benz’s uncanny balance of cutting-edge technology with full-on performance fun. Expect active road noise compensation, no-hands-required comfort doors controllable from the driver cockpit, signature blind spot assist (handy for such a long, large vehicle), special Maybach-tuned drive mode selection technology, passenger comfort auto-detection, and much more. mbusa.com

Rolls-Royce Phantom Series II Prices from $460,000
When it comes to legendary comfort and luxury, Rolls-Royce is the first carmaker to come to mind. The essence of Rolls-Royce motoring is probably best expressed in the current Phantom Series II, which made its U.S. debut during the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance events this summer. The marque’s signature floating-on-acloud, wafting driving dynamics bely the powerful 563hp twin-turbo V-12 engine. With a new illuminated Pantheon Grille on the fascia and 580 laser-cut reflecting bezels on the headlamp arrays, the designers and engineers in Goodwood have extended their masterpiece of quiet, pampering and spa-in-motion sybaritism to an even larger canvas. The list of luxury touches and details is dizzying, to be sure. The rear passenger area, for example, features deep-pile carpeting, a refrigerated central console compartment, a remote-controlled bespoke audio and entertainment system, and a “Private Suite” approach that includes a glass partition. rolls-roycemotorcars.com

66 LUX LIFE BOMBARDIER 01 01 Bombardier's Global 8000 02 Four spacious suites include an available bedroom and en-suite 03 Circadian-based lighting helps combat jet lag 04 Zero gravity seats are designed to reduce lower back pressure and aid circulation Bombardier BUSINESS JETS THAT MAKE WELLNESS SOAR WORDS SEBASTIAN MACDOUGALL
We’ve all been there. That feeling that greets you upon touching down after a long flight. The mild disorientation, the dry mouth, muscle stiffness and possibly a headache for good measure. It’s no surprise that long distance flights aren’t generally something travelers look forward to. However, one business jet manufacturer has made it their mission to make the comfort and wellbeing of travelers their number one priority and they have both the innovations and patents to back it up. When
Bombardier launched their Global 7500 business jet they took the conventional wisdom out of aircraft design, deciding to start fresh from the inside out, defining the passenger experience and then essentially wrapping the aircraft around it. The result is a business jet that takes comfort and wellness to another level— and the new Global 8000 jet that followed takes it even further.
Bombardier designers started with the seat, reengineering and patenting an entirely new inner architecture (the first real change to an aircraft seat in over 30 years) to enable it to provide the first zero-gravity seating position in business aviation. Called Nuage, which means cloud in French, the seat is designed to provide the benefits of floating in a zerogravity environment, reducing lower back pressure and aiding in circulation.
From the seat they went to sight and sound, equipping the interior with new ultra-large windows – six per living space – and engineering their Soleil lighting system that provides a circadianbased lighting functionality that can aid in synchronizing a traveler’s circadian rhythm to the time at their destination and can help combat jet lag. The company’s l’Opéra audio system is an audiophile’s dream with full range speakers throughout the interior and a directional audio sweet spot feature to channel the sound to your precise location in the cabin.
Arguably the most important feature for passengers is air quality, which is why they developed the Pũr Air system, which features a HEPA and carbon filter to not only rid the air of up to 99.99% of viruses, allergens and bacteria, but the system refreshes the cabin air in less than 90 seconds. On top of this, the Global 8000 jet takes cabin pressurization to another level with the lowest altitude among any business aircraft of only 2,900 feet, which is like a stroll through Yosemite National Park.
Working outwards, engineers set their sights on ride quality and designed an entirely new wing called the Smooth Flēx Wing that, as the name suggests, is specially designed to flex and dampen turbulence in the cabin for the smoothest ride. The result is unsurpassed ride quality that helps travelers relax and essentially forget they are even flying.
With Bombardier’s latest offering, the Global 8000 aircraft, featuring an 8,000 nautical mile range, travelers will have the ability to reach more locations around the world direct than ever before. These longer distances mean more time spent in the air, but with features like the Nuage seat, Soleil lighting system, Pũr Air and the Smooth Flex Wing, travelers may find that the flight was the highlight of their journey.

What is yacht charter?
Essentially a floating seven-star hotel that can take you anywhere you want to go, a superyacht charter is the ultimate customized experience. So customized, in fact, that it can differ from one guest to another, even within the same charter party. For some, it is the chance to spend quality time with family and friends in a safe and secure environment, while for others, it is the opportunity to explore the world in absolute luxury. Whatever the style of the charter, a superyacht is the ultimate platform for a truly diverse and unforgettable watercentered vacation.
Northrop & Johnson charter brokers know everything there is to know about the yachts in the charter fleet, the crew and the destinations in which they are cruising. They can advise on the best time of year to explore a certain cruising ground and suggest lots of exceptional things to do to make a charter as cultural, active, relaxing or fun as desired. In the meantime, here’s our Charter 101 advice on how to make your vacation as enjoyable as possible.
Choosing the right yacht
Decked out with everything from multiple cabins and gourmet kitchens to swimming pools and helicopter landing pads, a superyacht provides the ultimate home-away-from-home. Most yachts have certain things in common, but they are all unique and offer a range of features and amenities. A traditional motor yacht is ideal for a family group, for example, while a sailing yacht is often better suited to a yachting enthusiast. Added to this, most charter yachts only operate within specific cruising grounds, so although there are no hard and fast rules as to which to choose first – yacht or cruising area – the time of year you wish to charter and the location you want to travel to will largely determine the yachts available.
If this is your first yacht charter, you may want to aim for a tried-and-tested cruising ground with every facility on hand and a wide selection of available yachts to choose from. For example, somewhere in the Mediterranean or the Caribbean. Family charters or chartering with large groups of friends is also about having fun, so look at the water toys and entertainment facilities available. Some yachts are equipped with Jacuzzis, and a few of the larger yachts have swimming pools. Some have steam rooms and saunas, and some even have their own spas on board with a treatment room and masseuse within the crew. It really depends on the size, budget and type of yacht you are chartering as to the amenities available. Prices vary significantly depending on where you are cruising, the size of the yacht and the duration of your trip. Most charter yachts come complete with crew, including a captain, stewardess, and chef, allowing for a completely bespoke experience.

Where to charter
The most popular cruising grounds vary by season. If you are planning a summer charter, consider the cruising grounds of the Mediterranean. With countless islands and mainland harbors to choose from, plenty of distractions ashore and cuisine to suit all tastes, this area is popular for all types of charter, including families and groups of friends. The top charter spots in the winter months are in The Bahamas and Caribbean. When considering family charters, the best cruising grounds tend to be those with great beaches, warm climates and safe waters.
For those with older children, the Pacific Northwest – with its awe-inspiring terrain and fantastic wildlife – guarantees great memories, as does Scandinavia, Australia and New Zealand, to name just a few. If you are considering a more adventurous charter, choose based on your preferred time of year, as many cruising grounds are inhospitable off-season.
If you are chartering a yacht with friends, it might be the cuisine and dining that appeals most, and many cruising grounds are famed for their fine gourmet fare.
The Western Mediterranean – in particular the Côte d’Azur or Amalfi Coast – would be an ideal choice for a gourmet-style charter, with some of the world’s best restaurants located along their coastlines. Of course, the chef on board your yacht will also play a major role in creating a memorable charter experience, by introducing you to the fresh local ingredients used to make regional specialties and creating your own personalized menu on request.
Those fascinated by history might enjoy a charter in some of the Mediterranean’s cultural hotspots, including the southern coast of Turkey, the Greek islands, or the Eastern Adriatic (Croatia and Montenegro), all of which are steeped in history and provide interesting day trips ashore. Perhaps you are simply keen to try new watersports, or looking to experiment with a new activity in some of the most stunning settings in the world. Whether your charter will include mountain biking through the pine forests of New Zealand, kayaking through the Norwegian fjords, or deep-sea game fishing for marlin in the South Pacific, the opportunities are endless.

When to charter
There are two main seasons in yachting: summer and winter. The summer season runs from late spring through October, with the peak summer season (and peak rates) in July and August. The winter season runs from November to April, with the peak season running primarily over the holidays and into New Year. Shoulder season charters are often a good option for those looking to avoid the crowds in the more popular cruising grounds, and you may have more choices in terms of yacht.
What to eat
Tailormade cuisine is an intrinsic part of any yacht charter experience. Superyacht chefs are some of the most flexible and creative in the world. Rather than relying on a menu, they will pre-plan meals that fit your mood and palate, no matter where you are cruising. As a rule, guests will have provided information on their preferences prior to embarkation, and the yacht’s chef and stewardess will purchase all the provisions. Once on board, most chefs will chat with their guests every day to refine original meal plans and adjust menus according to the specialty of the day at the local market, or the weather. Rest assured, onboard all of the recommended charter fleet, guests will be met with an enlightened chef and a seemingly neverending stream of innovative dishes – all prepared to meet any dietary requirements.
How much does a charter cost?
Most yacht charter fees fall into two distinct categories: inclusive or expense-based, and it depends on the contract under which the yacht is cruising. Considered to be the industry’s leading point of reference, the MYBA Charter Agreement (MYBA The Worldwide Yachting Association) contract is the most commonly used. Under the MYBA contract, the charter fee is priced as a base rate that covers everything linked to the yacht (rental, insurance, crew) but is exclusive of expenses or anything specifically for the client. This includes everything from fuel costs to berthing fees and provisioning. In general, any additional expenses are paid via an Advance Provisioning Allowance (APA) of 30-35 percent of the base charter fee. Paid in advance and managed by the captain, the APA remains the charterer’s funds and any amount unspent at the end of the charter is refunded. Fuel often accounts for the largest portion of the APA, but it’s important to keep in mind that fuel is not used simply for moving the yacht but also for electricity, air conditioning, etc. There is no mark up on the costs of food and fuel. Inclusive charters provide an up-front rate. Note that taxes or value-added tax (VAT) may apply based on where you are coming from and where you are going. VAT and other taxes are generally not included in the base price of a charter.
Basic charter etiquette
A charter may be all about the freedom a yacht provides, but there are still a few unspoken rules of onboard etiquette that should be followed. From treating the crew with respect to regarding the yacht as you would your own home, simple manners apply. Most yachts have no-shoes and no-smoking policies. When it comes to the crew, it is customary to leave a gratuity. While the level is completely at the charterer’s discretion, a general guideline figure is between 10 and 20 percent of the base charter fee.

The Grenadines
You will love…
Basil’s Bar on the private island of Mustique. Children will love… Swimming with sea turtles in the Tobago Cays.
Stretching out at the tail end of the eastern Caribbean, the Grenadines offer the finest combination of warm, steady trade winds, stunning waters and very short cruising distances between. “The most popular itineraries for family charters involve hopping between islands without too many long transits between places,” says Charter Broker LeAnn Pliske. “This is when the Grenadines come into their own; it is only a short cruise from one island to the next, allowing for families to continuously feel stimulated and avoiding restless children on long passages.” Charters can be as hectic or as relaxed as you like – swing from hammocks under palm trees, drift along the beach collecting shells or jump in for a unique marine adventure. “An abundance of colorful tropical fish are accessible to even the youngest of snorkelers,” says Charter Broker Natascha Weber. “Set a course for the Tobago Cays – the white sand beaches and clear waters provided some of the backdrops for the blockbuster Pirates of the Caribbean movies.”
Skyfall

The 190’ (57.9m) SKYFALL will keep the family entertained while on board with her sundeck Jacuzzi, inflatable pool with jellyfish net and basketball hoop – perfect for active adults and children alike. Over 3,000 square feet of exterior deck spaces divided into sections to cater to different occasions will ensure that your charter doesn’t end in family mutiny. To add to her outstanding achievements in being a familyfriendly superyacht, SKYFALL’s spacious and beautifullyappointed accommodations include a split-level master stateroom and a full-beam VIP on the lower deck, with an adjacent twin cabin with Pullman berth. A guest elevator also runs from the accommodations deck to the skylounge, making the yacht suitable for wheelchair users.

Croatia is for those who want to see from their yacht and not necessarily be seen; a haven of tranquility and a place to simply be on the water, amble along cobblestoned streets or sit on ancient promenades and watch the world go by. The Dalmatian Coast is the Eastern Mediterranean’s take on the French Riviera. Here, you will find glorious remnants of the past piled up one on top of another that will keep your children’s eyes wide with wonder. “Spending time as a family, exploring new places and educating the children on the various locations, all while enjoying amazing cuisine with a crew to look after your every need – what could be better than a superyacht?” says Ann.

FORCE FOR GOOD
HOW TO REDUCE YOUR ECO-FOOTPRINT ON CHARTER Request eco-friendly washing products • Use reef-safe sunscreen Request organic toiletries • Request locally-sourced produce and a seasonal menu Recycle and request no single-use plastics on board • Offset your carbon footprint
From supporting conservation initiatives to gaining an insight into local biodiversity, a superyacht charter combines spending time outdoors with learning about conservation in some of the world’s most beautiful and far-flung destinations. When chartering a yacht through Northrop & Johnson, families can enjoy incredible luxury vacations that also support significant social and environmental change for the future. How can yacht guests contribute when it comes to environmental concerns? Here, we outline the initiatives available to help our ocean heal.
Scientific Research
A superyacht provides the perfect base from which to explore remote areas that are normally beyond reach, meaning owners, charterers and crew can actively help in scientific research while exploring the ocean. Whether hosting a scientist on board or documenting species and submitting them to an official database, there are a multitude of ways in which the waterborne can support scientific-led initiatives. A superyacht can act as a research vessel, taking scientists out on the water to conduct important field research in areas that are otherwise inaccessible due to budget constraints and facilities. “We already have some owners who offer their vessel to scientists during the periods of the year that they are not onboard, and with initiatives such as The International SeaKeepers Society and Yachts for Science, we can now offer charter clients the opportunity to become involved in meaningful projects,” says Charter Director Sacha Williams.
Alternatively, anyone on a yacht can become a citizen scientist by incorporating the collection of vital data while cruising. “There are all manner of global initiatives around the world that allow the waterborne to make a valued contribution to data collection, as well as the conservation process,” says Charter Manager Carine Zanotti. “It might even be that the yacht you are chartering is already part of a citizen science initiative, with the crew collating much-needed data during their usual cruising itineraries.” All guests can get involved in such activities. “While on charter, why not encourage the younger guests to conduct their own ocean research, thus allowing them to bear witness to the effects of climate change from a young age,” says Carine.
Marine Conservation
Aiding the protection of declining populations of marine life can make for a truly rewarding yachting experience. While there are many ways to detect marine life, including eDNA (environmental
DNA) and scientific research, hands-on conservation programs - such as tagging - are vital to protecting and restoring declining marine species and habitats. After all, the ocean is the world’s largest carbon sink, thanks only to the life within it. From tagging sharks to planting corals, there are a number of initiatives in just about every cruising area. Fancy exploring Costa Rica’s rich coastline? While there, you could join a nighttime beach patrol in search of leatherback turtles and their eggs, including tagging these magnificent creatures and relocating their nests away from poachers and wildlife. Alternatively, while cruising through Alaska’s great expanse of unspoiled coastlines, why not also track endangered beluga whales, reporting any sightings back to researchers. Or while in the Galápagos, have your kids spend their days tagging and counting sharks for conservation purposes in a daily chore like no other.
Community Support
It isn’t just marine conservation that can make a difference. While on charter, clients should consider joining local community projects that contribute to the area in which they are cruising. This could be in the form of a beach cleanup or community-building project. There are a number of organizations in cruising grounds around the world where visiting yachts and their guests can participate and experience the local community and culture in a direct and authentic way. YachtAid Global is one of the largest non-governmental organizations involved in programs that aim to improve the lives of local residents across global coastal communities. Current projects include a sailing and swimming school in the Galápagos and educational programs in the Caribbean.
Campaigns
Obviously, you don’t need to be cruising aboard a superyacht to be able to make contributions to marine conservation and the environment. Everyone has a voice that can be used to campaign for ocean protection. Whether campaigning to reduce single-use plastics or calling out overfishing, there are a number of issues that can be highlighted to your government representative. As individuals, we can also eliminate singleuse items and use eco-friendly products in our daily lives, and choose sustainably-caught local fish, and seasonal, local produce. Lastly, by helping to fund ocean conservation organizations such as The Blue Marine Foundation and The International SeaKeepers Society, we can enable those leading the charge in efforts to restore the ocean.

01
In our opinion, there are a great deal more than seven wonders in the world. Everywhere you travel, there are unbelievable sights and experiences to be relished. Have you ever wanted to watch a traditional Polynesian dance by moonlight? Or visit the Provençal haunts of artistic legends the likes of Picasso or Van Gogh? Or how about a journey to Napoleon’s birthplace in Corsica?
Every cruising ground has a wealth of culture, ranging from natural phenomena and historic acclaim to cuisine and customs, and a superyacht can take you on an exciting journey of discovery. “Every excursion is organized in the most luxurious manner possible,” explains Charter Broker Fiona Maureso. “A superyacht allows you to go off the beaten track and see sides of destinations that few know about. For example, when cruising aboard the Phinisi-style LAMIMA through the Komodo Islands of Indonesia, guests can get up close to deserted
beaches where wild Komodo dragons forage, or head ashore with an expert National Park ranger to see them in their natural habitat.”
It's not just Southeast Asia attracting the superyachts. New destinations are joining the world cruising map regularly. As more and more charterers desire remote, off-the-beaten-track experiences, owners are positioning their yachts in places beyond the more typical cruising grounds of the Mediterranean and Caribbean. “Whether you wish to charter the rugged waters of Alaska, venture to the tranquil shores of the Indian Ocean, or head south to the varied coastlines of Central and South America, a yacht can take you to remote places in comfort and style,” says Fiona. “For example, guests can discover the ‘Rich Coast’ of Costa Rica aboard the 76’ (23.3m) THUNDERBOLT this winter, or the pure waters of Alaska aboard the 130’ (39.6m) SERENGETI in the summer.”

01 Discover Indonesia's Komodo archipelago aboard the Phinisi-style superyacht LAMIMA
You don’t always need to go off the beaten track to discover some of the finest cruising grounds in the world, however. The Bahamas and Caribbean, for example, offer many opportunities for adventure. “The Exumas offer an endless pool of diving and fishing experiences,” says Charter Broker Greg Gasior, “while the Caribbean Sea is perfect for water-based activities; swimming, windsurfing, waterskiing, kayaking, wakeboarding, knee-boarding and snorkeling are all par for the course when cruising aboard a superyacht.” A yacht is also the perfect way to access some of the finest sporting opportunities ashore. Many of the world’s championship golf courses trace idyllic coastlines, hiking and mountain biking don’t get better than remote tracks winding through tropical island forests and quad biking and horse riding can usually be arranged.
It's not all about exploring ashore and activities galore. One of the best things about a superyacht is its almost unique capacity to provide a luxurious, secure and private setting with all the facilities required for fun, unforgettable days aboard. “All the yachts in the charter fleet are equipped with fantastic watersports equipment, the salons transform into mini cinemas (some even have dedicated cinema rooms on board) and your chef can cook your favorite meals,” says Charter Broker Diana Meza. “While some guests may choose to cycle, swim and enjoy all the water toys, others can enjoy more relaxing pursuits aboard.” Every vacation should also have time
for relaxation, whether that means starting the day with breakfast in bed before lounging on the aft deck or having a massage or beauty treatment with the onboard masseuse (if there is one within the crew). If not, your charter broker can arrange for a masseuse to come on board or book a treatment at a world-class spa ashore.
When it comes to reservations, the team behind your charter are on hand to organize the very best of everything. “Dinners at Michelin-starred restaurants, smooth entry to the hippest clubs in town, transfers to the best boutiques ashore, a round of golf on a championship course… nothing is out of reach on a superyacht,” says Charter Broker Cecile Blin. “Of course, the decks of a superyacht lend themselves well to gourmet black-tie dinners, Champagne celebrations or lazy afternoons spent chatting with friends while sipping cocktails and savoring gourmet snacks." Whatever style of charter you prefer, a superyacht is guaranteed to deliver the utmost in luxury, inspiration and indulgence.

Balearic Islands
Chosen by: Anna Franciszkiewicz, Charter Broker
Why Once known primarily for a pulsing club scene, today, the Balearics are among the Mediterranean’s most glamorous cruising spots. On the island of Mallorca, it’s all about lazy lunches anchored in secret coves, ambling through ancient alleyways and discovering hidden gourmet gems galore. The hedonistic island of Ibiza attracts well-heeled travelers taking advantage of the long hours of sunshine and worldclass hip hangouts. Step ashore to the old town, Dalt Vila, and stroll through the cobblestone streets lined with boutiques and restaurants, or anchor in idyllic bays and enjoy a varied collection of laid-back beach clubs along the rugged coastline. The nearby island of Espalmador offers stunning beaches, while Formentera is the perfect spot for an early morning dive or an afternoon anchorage.
When The Balearic Islands enjoy a pleasant climate from late spring through to early fall, with sailing conditions favorable from late April to late September. The high season runs from late June until late August; however, for the waterborne, there are plenty of hidden coves and beaches that remain quiet during the peak summer season.
Yacht Luxurious, sophisticated and packed from bow to stern with impressive facilities including a PADI diving center on board, the 203’ (62m) RoMa is the perfect yacht on which to enjoy the Balearic Islands. Prices from €370,000 per week, plus expenses, for up to 12 guests.*

The Cyclades
Chosen by: Diana Meza, Senior Charter Broker
Why With their steady winds, dramatic landscapes and natural harbors, the Cyclades make for the perfect cruising destination. The idyllic archipelago provides Greece with its most potent tourist clichés – think blue church domes perched on the hillside, white-washed villages and a wealth of historical sites left over the course of five millennia. From the cosmopolitan island of Mykonos to majestic Santorini, all the islands abound with simplicity and laid-back charm combined with a sophisticated and relaxed vibe.
When The Cyclades enjoy a long summer season, stretching from April through to October. May and June see the most favorable temperatures, while the peak summer months of July and August tend to be the hottest. During this time, the Meltemi winds are at their strongest and may affect the Aegean Sea.
Croatia
Chosen by: Natalya de Raigniac, Charter Broker
Why Firmly on the map as a favorite destination for yacht charter, Croatia’s Dalmatian Coast is a compelling summer cruising ground. The popular notion that the Mediterranean has been changed by tourism does not ring true for this region. Hundreds of islands scattered along the Croatian Adriatic remain beautifully preserved, with remnants of the many civilizations that have graced these shores at just about every anchorage. Roman, Venetian and Austrian influences are all evident in the architecture – nowhere more so than in the old towns of Dubrovnik and Split, both of which are well-known for their spectacular Roman fortifications. They are also known for their cosmopolitan vibe, with bars and restaurants coming alive with a buzz and energy as the sun sets. Over on the islands, the glamorous beach clubs and bars also hold their own, attracting the superyacht set to enjoy cocktails and dancing by the water’s edge as the sun sets.
When April through October is the best time to cruise, when the Adriatic is at its calmest. Late June to August is the high season, with warm water, low winds and balmy temperatures. Yacht Discover the islands and islets of the Dalmatian coastline while cruising aboard the 96’ (29.5m) VIVALDI. Prices from €72,000 per week, plus expenses, for up to 10 guests.*

NorwayChosen by: Carl Sputh, Charter Broker
Why The land of the midnight sun makes for a dramatic and awe-inspiring backdrop for any yacht charter. It may not be the place to spend your days sunbathing, but really the only place to be is on deck as nothing can prepare you for the beauty of the passing scenery. From sleepy fishing villages to medieval castles to glittering fjords, the Norwegian coastline provides an abundance of experiences for the waterborne. Cruise from Bergen around the dramatic southern fjords, including the famed Hardangerfjord and Sognefjord. From the fjords, cruise north to the Lofoten Islands or south to Stavanger – the cruising opportunities are plentiful.
When The recommended time for cruising in the Baltic region is from early May until late August. Springtime sees the snow retreat to the mountaintops, leaving a landscape scattered with waterfalls and streams. The climate is very much influenced by Atlantic weather disturbances, thus can be changeable throughout the year.
Yacht The expansive exterior decks found on board the 180’ (55m) REVELRY are the perfect viewing platform from which to witness the awe-inspiring scenery of the Norwegian fjords. Prices from €255,000 per week, plus expenses, for up to 12 guests.*

It pays to have a guide on board to help you explore safely. Drifting in such a remote location brings you up close to intriguing creatures in their natural habitat, which you can watch go about their day in wonderful seclusion.

Why Raja Ampat is very much a destination for cruising. Most life takes place underwater, on the water or by the water. For those looking to stay closer to shore, snorkeling from the beach is equally rewarding.
When October to April, when the seas are at their calmest. This being said, unlike some parts of Indonesia, Raja Ampat doesn’t have an “off” season. The weather is stable, with less distinct dry and rainy seasons, and the water temperatures and underwater visibility are excellent year-round.

Memories of Monaco
The 31st Monaco Yacht Show (MYS) was a flurry of excitement as yachting enthusiasts from around the world pitched up to view superyachts berthed in the prestigious Port Hercules. Throughout the show, N&J maintained a significant presence and the brokers more than had their hands full negotiating the purchase and sale of some of the largest yachts on the market. N&J-listed yachts included the 178’ (54.4m) FARIBANA V built by Amels, the 158’ (48.15m) Feadship GITANA, the 137’ (41.9m) OCEAN’S SEVEN from Kingship, and the 115’ (35.2m) Sunseeker SEDATIVE. The Principality setting facilitated plenty of outdoor partying with an elite crowd joining N&J at various events. The Monday evening prior to the show saw the Captain’s Beach Party at La Note Bleue. Hosted by N&J, the evening brought together N&J’s captains to enjoy great food and entertainment. The Thursday then saw N&J’s MYS Signature Evening Under the Stars event hosted aboard the 178’ (54.4m) Amels superyacht FARIBANA V. Guests were treated to an exclusive tasting with LOUIS XIII cognac, displays from Ulysse Nardin, and treats from valued partners NetJets, Newcoast and Intellian. The evening was held in support of the well-known international nonprofit organization, Water.org.

03 Cannes Yachting Festival
The Cannes show opened its doors to a host of industry professionals and keen yachting enthusiasts, as well as existing and new buyers. Reports suggest healthy sales figures that could peak 2019 levels, despite a lack of inventory and long lead times for new builds. There were nearly 600 yachts on display, many of which made their world debut both within the show and at anchor in the beautiful surroundings of the Old Port and Port Pierre Canto, making this the largest in-water yacht show in Europe. N&J made its mark with a selection of outstanding yachts on display, ranging from 86’ (26.29m) to 137’ (41.9m) in length and $5,300,000 to $11,500,000 in price. An array of exclusive social activities hosted by Northrop & Johnson took place throughout the show, both on board the yachts and ashore alongside N&J’s valued partners, including an invite-only cocktail evening on board Numarine’s 22XP.

Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show
The sun shone down on America’s East Coast for the duration of the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show, bringing out crowds for what has now become the world’s largest boat show. Yachts from the N&J fleet attracted a lot of attention during the week and were inundated with viewings on brokerage yachts, which included the 191’ (58.22m) UNBRIDLED, the 168’ (51.21m) GALLANT LADY, the 158’ (48.15m) GITANA, the 150’ (45.72m) QING, the 140’ (42.67m) SKYLER, the 130’ (39.62m) LIONSHARE and the 127’ (38.71m) SWEET CAROLINE. As well as displaying some of the best superyachts in the show, N&J hosted various events throughout the week, including the annual Captains’ Cocktail Reception, which was held on the beautiful terrace of N&J partner Northern Trust. Clients and VIP guests were also treated to N&J’s Signature Experience, which included a valet service to and from N&J’s luxury estate, where N&J and valued partners hosted clients throughout the week.
