Quod Vitae I always feel a little philosophical whenever I sit down to report on all of the exciting goings-on at Northrop & Johnson. The first time I wrote the foreword to this issue we were in the throws of spring, busily making plans for grand summer adventures. And then the whole world tumbled down a rabbit hole. I never thought I would see the day that a case of hand sanitizer would literally be worth more than a barrel of oil, but that day happened.

At my core, I am an optimist. I look for the bright side of things because I find pessimism exhausting. It has been hard to find a bright side to Covid-19; we’ve been collectively hobbled and humbled by something too small to be seen. Families have lost loved ones, and medical professionals continue to give selflessly saving the lives of thousands. The world has changed. Alvin Toffler said, “Change is not merely necessary to life – it is life.” And life goes on. Now that the warm air of summer has arrived and businesses are reemerging to meet the day of today, my optimism (albeit cautious optimism) is invigorated and the sea is calling me. I don’t know about you, but I could use some fresh air.

Despite the very serious results of the pandemic, at N&J, life and work still goes on. Many of you will have read the news that N&J has been acquired by MarineMax, Inc. We are on the cusp of some sensational evolutions in our business and anticipate continued growth through the remainder of 2020 and beyond with the support of the MarineMax family. It also gives me great pleasure to announce that Daniel Ziriakus has been promoted to President and COO of Northrop & Johnson. Daniel’s hard work and unrelenting search for improvement in our business has elevated Northrop & Johnson to a global, market-leading brokerage company. It is a joy for me personally to have Daniel officially recognized for the important work he does to make the Northrop & Johnson operation a tour de force in the industry. With the MarineMax merger and Daniel at the company helm, I am shifting my role to Chairman. I will continue to work with clients and shape this new, magnificent opportunity we have in front of us.

Northrop & Johnson has been a part of my life for three decades. In that time, I have not hired any employees – I have hired a family. I now see the Northrop & Johnson family becoming even more grand and dynamic than I could have ever imagined, and I recognize its similarity to my family at home. As my son nears the end of his undergraduate studies at Princeton, I see all of the wonderful opportunities and imminent changes on his horizon.

Just prior to the Covid-19 outbreak my wife and I were able to vacation with our son in the beautiful country of Thailand. My son had brought a few friends from school, and one evening as I was sitting with my wife at a table on the beach enjoying a cocktail, I found myself obsessing over what was taking the kids so long to join us. It was like herding cats getting those kids to do anything. I rose from the table to mobilize the highly energetic undergrads when my wife, Mariette, said to me, “What’s wrong with just being here?” (I hear her voice in my head now as I write.) That’s it. Of course!

My amazing wife had given me the secret of life. It was the Desiderata in one sentence. Just be here. Life is full of changes and distractions, some big, most small. One thing I have learned over the past few months is that the secret spice is living in the now, in the moment, this moment.

EX PLO RER YACH TS Just about every shipyard appears to be coming out with its own version of the explorer-style yacht. Explorer yacht or expedition yacht, call them what you like, the demand for vessels that offer an exceptional cruising range to allow for long voyages, and constructed from tough, ocean-going materials, continues to grow year-on-year. For those who want to get off the beaten track, explorer yachts are the choice du jour, coming as they do with the opportunity to go literally anywhere that’s blue on the world map.

Damen introduced their SeaXplorer range in 2015 and their first build will be delivered to her owners this year. The 203ft (62m) SeaXplorer is Polar Class and has expedition facilities for 30 days of total autonomy. Damen now have the 183ft (55m) SeaXplorer 55 (10) in build and on spec, with concept design options of 65, 75, 95 and 105 meters.

Sanlorenzo launched the steel-hulled 500EXP (11) last year in Monaco during the annual yacht show. Boasting a range of 4,500 nautical miles, the Sanlorenzo 500EXP is an explorer yacht ready to traverse even the most extreme conditions. Sanlorenzo has created a wide range of custom options for the 500EXP model.

Moonen, Benetti (12), Baglietto, Mulder, CRN and Numarine all have explorerstyle vessels designed for potential owners looking to put a personal stamp on their own build.

MAKING WAV E S From silent hybrid cruisers to environmentally-friendly sailing yachts, a handful of shipyards are surfing the global trend and taking steps to make the superyacht industry greener with eco-friendly vessels. Navigator talks to those making waves in the right direction.

A number of shipyards are showing a growing concern for the environment, building yachts with lower carbon footprints and improved fuel efficiency.

What “green solutions” do you have in place to build eco-friendly vessels?

N The 262-foot (80m) hybrid superyacht Artefact incorporates several new technological and engineering features to minimize its environmental impact. These include 247 square feet (23sqm) of solar panels on the sundeck hardtop, as well as a large battery storage system and a diesel-electric propulsion system developed with ABB. The technology makes her up to 30% more efficient than other diesel yachts of her size. Artefact is also one of the first superyachts in the world to meet IMO Tier III emissions regulations.

H At Heesen, we are continually investing in research and development to look at new ways of reducing fuel consumption, using sustainable materials, pioneering progressive hull designs, and developing innovative propulsion systems. More importantly, Heesen are renowned for our lightweight aluminum construction and meticulous weight reduction. The most important steps we can make with regards to fuel savings involve building a lighter yacht.

O We are not only working toward building yachts with lower carbon footprints, we are creating a greener world within our own facilities in The Netherlands. We have undergone major renovations to our outfitting facilities in Alblasserdam.

Similar to our 520-foot (160m) dry dock, which opened in 2015, this will also be ecologically enhanced and updated with state-of the-art technologies.

Has your environmental initiative come from your owners or did you embrace the cause?

N In the case of the eco-friendly Artefact, it was the owner’s desire from the beginning of the project to minimize the environmental impact of the vessel using advanced technology.

H Both. We are always pushing the boundaries of what can be achieved and looking to develop new technologies and smart initiatives within yacht builds that will help to make yachts and the yachting lifestyle more environmentally conscious.

However, without owners who are willing to embrace new technologies and implement pioneering innovations on board their private vessels, we wouldn’t be able to make the progress that we have seen in recent years. Heesen, as a company, are fully embracing this philosophy, and we are putting all our effort into building more efficient yachts that use less fuel to take our clients further. Both motor yacht Home and Project Electra – the world’s first FDHF (fast displacement hull form) with hybrid propulsion – were built on speculation.

At Heesen, we believe it is our responsibility to bring to the market products that are more respectful of our environment.

It is a two way street - it comes both ways.

Do you believe a yacht can be built that is truly eco-friendly or is calling a superyacht eco-friendly an oxymoron?

N In the future, we will continue to see growth and innovation within propulsion systems and hybrid engines, as well as yachts that possess sleeker, more efficient hull designs. This significantly reduces both costs to the owner and a yacht’s carbon footprint.

There are small yachts built today that are powered entirely by solar or electricity, and that gives us hope that in the coming years the technology applied to these vessels will be transferred to larger superyachts to make them truly eco-friendly. The industry has already seen concepts launched that use hydrogen, wind, electricity, battery and solar energy for propulsion with the aim of building a fossil-free yacht, so while it doesn’t as yet exist, we remain hopeful that it won’t be long before we see a carbon-free environmentally-friendly yacht on the market. Project Electra, which launched in February, is the second of our hybrid yachts at Heesen, which sees two water-cooled DC electric shaft motors of 127kW each quietly power the yacht when in hybrid mode.

O Our 350-foot (106.7m) Black Pearl is a strong testament to greener yachting. As for motoryachts, there are newer technologies becoming available that are making yachting more and more sustainable. Sometimes with incremental change and sometimes with step change – the 357-foot (109m) Bravo Eugenia being a good example. People like to see meaningful innovation and that is what we are focusing on to make an impact on sustainability while at the same time not compromising comfort. Yachts can be greener, but there are rules and regulations that are not always in line with energy reduction and other improvements that can be made to reduce the yacht’s overall environmental footprint.

There may also be an initial resistance to paying the price tag of the specialized systems that will be installed to make the yacht more environmentally-friendly at this time.

However, we have faith that we are moving in that direction.

A large proportion of the carbon dioxide emissions from superyachts is due to energy requirements for onboard equipment and operations. Defined as “hotel load,” a superyacht needs to deliver all the luxurious trappings an owner or charterer desires. How do you combat this demand and optimize efficiency on board?

H The main consumption in hotel loads are the AC system and laundry. We constantly work on improving insulation and, with the help of our partners, on installing the most efficient systems. In addition, we increase our efficiency of use of power on our hybrid yachts. For example, our 164-foot (50m) hybrid yacht Electra, in Economic Mode (for speeds between 9 and 12 knots) allows you to switch off the generators. Running off the main engines alone, the e-motors supply the hotel load. In Cruising Mode (the most

conventional mode), the e-motors are switched off, with the generators providing power to the hotel load. The main engines drive the yachts’ propellers.

O Black Pearl was designed with many eco-conscious considerations. For instance, she has a large-scale battery storage capacity on board. Under sail power at 14 knots the yacht regenerated enough energy to power the full house load, thus obviating the need to run generators while under sail.

Proven concepts, such as the axe bow and the use of composite materials or aluminum has helped reduce the weight of superyachts and improved overall fuel consumption. How have you embraced new materials in your builds?

H We have always been at the forefront of aluminum yacht builds and are, in fact, the leaders in that field, but the use of composite materials is not something we advocate due to the material’s inability to be broken down at the

end of a yacht’s life cycle. We do, of course, welcome new developments that help to reduce fuel consumption, and the FDHF – which was devised by our long-term partners Van Oossanen Naval Architects – is an innovative hull shape that we have become known for. The FDHF increases the overall performance of the yacht by reducing the hydrodynamic resistance. The beauty of this hull form is that it combines low resistance with high performance and therefore brings advantages to both the builder and the owner. For the builder, the lower installed power for a given speed translates into lower building costs that can be passed on to the owner. From the owner’s point of view, lower fuel consumption means lower operational costs, while less bunker capacity frees up more space for other services, and smaller engines help to reduce noise and vibration and free up space for guests’ use.

A long time ago, Oceanco built a couple of aluminumhulled yachts, but now we build steel hulls with aluminum superstructures. Bravo Eugenia does have an axe bow and it was developed on our LIFE (Lengthened, Innovative, Fuel Efficient and Eco-Friendly) design platform, with eco-consciousness and fuel efficiency considerations leading the design. We are also using more carbon fiber – the 295ft (90m) DreAMBoat has a full carbon canopy, mast house and mast.

Being more environmentally responsible is a primary focus for everyone in the superyacht industry, from designers and shipyards, to owners, brokers and charterers. Do you believe it is simply down to levels of investment, and if so, should this always be down to the owner or do you believe the industry should invest more?

N Just their size alone means that superyachts will never be truly eco-friendly; but the industry seems to be mindful of its image and the tightening of regulations. Together with many owners’ desire for both novelty and an attempt to mitigate their impact on the ocean, the industry is leaning toward increasingly greener yachts.

H It is too easy to sit back and expect owners to invest all their time, effort and money into making superyachts environmentally responsible. We believe the industry as a whole is accountable for pushing the design, build and enjoyment of yachts in a greener direction, and thankfully, the vast majority of my peers agree.

When it comes to outfitting new or existing superyachts, custom furniture plays an important role in creating an onboard look and feel that perfectly reflects the owner’s individual taste. By commissioning bespoke pieces, it is possible for designers to realize the exact vision of a carefully thought-out design, while also making use of special pieces that are a joy to behold and use.

“Being ‘unique’ is an essential prerogative for the highend market,” says the team at Italian company Paola Lenti, which specializes in creating furniture for relaxation spaces on yachts. “Especially in yachting, it is essential to be able to allow the customer the highest level of customization – we have always been able to achieve this thanks to a happy marriage between modern industrial techniques and the most exquisite Italian craftsmanship tradition.” Once the Paola Lenti team receives an initial design brief, they set to work creating marine-tailored pieces crafted from the highest quality materials.

“The greatest challenge is certainly to produce modern pieces that are destined to last over time, respecting man and nature in the choice of materials and giving the products that artisan taste that makes them different from all,” they say.

“This is all while maintaining quality necessary for a high level product conceived to be used in particular conditions such as those on yachts.”

For Summit Furniture, a typical scenario in a custom superyacht commission is that a client will want a bespoke version of one of their existing range, although one-off pieces are often produced too. The conversation will usually begin with a designer approaching the Summit team with a particular scheme they want executed. “Custom commissions mean that you can create something that fits a precise brief, purpose or function and the aesthetic of the client/designer,” says Hilary Gustafsson, Managing Director of Summit Furniture. “When it comes to the actual piece and finish of custom commissions, we tend to push the envelope from what is standard – we can easily accommodate that kind of bespoke request.” Communication during the creation process is an important part of getting custom commissions right. “The biggest challenge of a bespoke piece is meeting the precise visions and expectations of the client and it’s all about being clear about what will be delivered, especially when you are working with natural materials,” says Gustafsson.

The commissioning of custom furniture often has the added bonus of being a very enjoyable and personal part of the superyacht ownership process that clients can be highly involved in. “Bespoke furniture is about the realization of a dream,” says Mark Boddington, Founder and CEO of Silver Lining Furniture, which has worked with more than 70 yachts of over 180 feet (55 meters) in the past 30 years. “Clients today want an experience in building a yacht not just an acquisition – they enjoy the interaction, playing their part in the creation process that they can share with family and friends.

Many pieces of custom superyacht furniture are the epitome of form meeting function – workable yet stunning to look at. Fletcher Tables have produced their unique expanding Fletcher Capstan tables for a number of superyachts including Northrop & Johnson charter yachts Baton Rouge, Encore and Ilona. The tables are made from the world’s finest hard woods and can be expanded as needed in a mesmerizingly fluid way.

One obstacle faced by many manufacturers of custom superyacht furniture is the setting in which their pieces will be used, and subsequently it is important to tailor pieces to the unique marine environment that yachts operate in. Challenges might include humidity, fluctuating temperatures, salt air, high UV levels, weight considerations and the ability to relocate pieces around the yacht if required. “Our sundeck collection has been tailored to superyacht use and the related practical implications and everything can be easily moved around and is foldable/ stackable,” says Gustafsson. “It is important to design while keeping the functionality of a yacht in mind.”

“Many superyacht owners are also now very aware of the environment and of a sustainable and ethical supply chain and wanting to make a difference. “ The briefs reflect that owners are looking for pieces that require minimal maintenance and are made from natural products.”

It is often said that the world is getting smaller, however, as more and more cruising grounds open up it could be said that the quite opposite is, in fact, the case. Reaching these ever-expanding areas may be harder; even if you have your own plane or private jet share, the range or seating limits might be feasible for business travel but not for longer distances to remote cruising grounds.

Obviously, there is the option to charter a private jet on a trip-by-trip basis, with different types available, but often there are ferry fees to get the plane back to base and then return to pick you up. In essence, this means you have to purchase two round trips. When it comes to intercontinental flights, the costs can mount up. Not only that but, as typical with one-off jet charters, it also means that if there is a mechanical issue or a pilot gets sick, you can be left to find a replacement on short notice – something that may not be easy depending on where you are flying to or from.

For these reasons, you might want to think about a fractional share, lease or even some of the recently introduced jet cards that offer fixed rates and guaranteed availability for transatlantic flights. In all cases, the providers guarantee replacement aircraft at your original pricing. Compared to on-demand charter, both fractional share options and jet cards enable you to book within days – and in some cases hours – of your planned departure time. Added to this, cancellation policies or flight changes are often much more liberal than when booking a one-off charter. That means if you decide to leave a few days early for some shopping in Paris, or you want to stay in Phuket for a week after you disembark your yacht, you have much more flexibility to change plans. So, which long distance option and operator is right for you?

NetJets In terms of ultra-long-haul private jets, NetJets focuses on Bombardier’s popular Global Express series through shares and leases. It currently operates the Global 5000, Global 6000, and is selling the Global 7500, with the first one joining next year. It also offers the Gulfstream G450, good for flights up to around nine-and-a-half hours, in jet card format starting at 25 hours. However, since time is money, nonstop is better, and that’s where its Global Express options make the most sense, offering three types to suit your requirements. The Global 6000 has a range of about thirteen-and-a-half hours flying time, compared to just under 12 hours for the Global 5000, while the Global 7500 will extend nonstop flights to as long as 16 hours.

NetJets president Patrick Gallagher says its Global 5000 program is sold out, although the type remains in the fleet, and is an option to its customers via its interchange program. “We attribute that demand (for the 6000 compared to the 5000) to two things: first and most notably, the added range, and second, the forward crew rest area configuration.”

Speaking about the layout, Gallagher explains: “This affords passengers more privacy, which owners seem to appreciate whether traveling with a large team and conducting business or sleeping on an overnight flight.”

He adds, “Comparing the 6000 to the 7500 is a similar story. We have continued to take deliveries of the 6000 as we approach our first 7500 arrival early next year, at which point we will cut over to the flagship 7500.

We already have commitments for the first two 7500s, and the drivers of those purchase decisions mirror that of the 6000 versus 5000—range and cabin space.”

Gallagher notes, “Several of our early adopters of the 7500 were excited by the prospect of connecting distant city pairs without a fuel stop, which was necessary on their Global 6000 shares despite its impressive range.”

An added benefit is that the fourth cabin zone in the 7500 adds one-third more living space and allows NetJets to introduce a permanent bed in the private aft stateroom.

Other perks of the 7500 will be increased comfort, reconfigured windows and additional cabin amenities, as well as improved speed. If you are based in Europe and flying to your yacht in North America or vice versa, another NetJets advantage is its extensive fleet starting with the Embraer Phenom 300 in the light jet category.

This means, if you flew on a Global from Zurich to Nassau, but then just three or four guests wanted to hop over to TPC Sawgrass in Ponte Vedra for a round of golf, you can get guaranteed availability on the smaller jet. In the recently released 2019 Business Jet Traveler Readers’

VistaJet Another option for long-range private flights is VistaJet, a subsidiary of Dubai-based Vista Global Holding. It also owns XO, which it formed last year through a combination of XOJET and JetSmarter, both recent acquisitions.

VistaJet took delivery of its first Global 7500 in January and expects to have six in its fleet by the end of the year, with plans to take delivery of another half dozen in 2022. To access its newest addition, you need to join its Program, which requires at least 50 flight hours per year and a three-year commitment. It also offers the Global 6000 and Global 5000 via the on-demand charter program or through its jet card.

Among the perks of VistaJet is live inflight programming for your children – think Alice in Wonderland tea party inflight, in character, with Alice included. There is also a special menu for pets, and during the World Economic

Forum in Davos, it launched a new optional carbon offset program.

Flexjet Flexjet, the second largest fractional fleet operator behind NetJets, offers the Gulfstream G650 as its fleet option for long-haul. Instead of using the typical currency of hours, it sells a day-based program that enables you to keep the same aircraft with you even when you aren’t flying.

Currently, its program is limited to customers in New York and London, although that may change in the future.

Jet Cards If you don’t want to make a multi-year commitment, there are now more short-term options that give you guaranteed availability, and fixed one-way rates, meaning no ferry fees, at least when it comes to flying between Europe and North America. In addition to NetJets’ G450 25- and 50-hour jet cards, Air Partner, the JetSet Group and Private Jet Services (PJS) all launched their own transatlantic membership programs last year. Starting at just ten hours of purchased time, you can book your flight with as little as 72 hours’ notice. Unlike the offerings from NetJets, VistaJet and Flexjet, you get a large cabin jet instead of a specific type, however, the tradeoff is that they are a feasible solution for a one-off trip.

A The Bodrum Peninsula The place where the Aegean meets the Mediterranean, the Bodrum Peninsula is the most popular yachting center on the western shore. A rounded headland jutting into the Aegean, it lies opposite the Greek island of Kos and between Turkey’s busier resort areas of Kuşadasi to the north and Marmaris to the south. Its cosmopolitan charm and strategic coastal position have contributed to its popularity as the ideal embarkation point for a superyacht charter. Founded 400 years B.C., it has plenty to offer any culture vultures in the charter party but is equally up to date with stylish, secluded resorts and a jet-set crowd to rival Capri or St. Tropez.

The Bodrum Peninsula offers a wide choice of marinas, including the Milta Bodrum Marina that occupies the main part of the harbor, close to the historic center of the city, and Port Bodrum Yalikavak in the northwest of the peninsula. The latter is where you will find plenty of bars, restaurants and boutiques, as well as a private yacht club and an amphitheater for concerts and shows. If, on the other hand, relaxation and rejuvenation are what you desire, head across the

water for a treatment at the Six Senses Kaplankaya. Rising up from the shore into a scrub of pistachio and olive trees, Kaplankaya is a smart hideout where you will find not just the Six Senses, but three more hotels and a marina in the offing.

Back on board, cruise on to the historic town of Bodrum itself. The attractive port, which is presided over by the Castle of St. Peter, has garnered comparisons to St. Tropez, with cafés, bars and restaurants bustling with locals and visitors. Spend the day embracing the town’s cultural riches and Bohemian lifestyle. Try one of the great ocakbaşi restaurants in the Kumbahçe district, on Atatürk and Cumhuriyet streets. The cuisine, the bazaars and the hammams are inherently oriental, while the culture is a very easy-going variety of Islamic.

By day the calls of the muezzin resound; at night the town reverberates with the sound of clubs and bars. Early evening, take the tender around the headland for cocktails and chilled beats at the Buddha-Bar Beach Bodrum. The legendary Buddha-Bar Beach chose the glistening Aegean as the prime spot to open its 10th international location last summer and has already become the chic hot spot for the discerning yachting crowd.

Tip – Book tickets for a live performance at the Bodrum Amphitheatre. Listen to music in an arena that once echoed to the baying of a bloodthirsty crowd. In ancient times, its capacity was about 13,000. Now, it’s a much more intimate 4,000 - outdoors of course

Datça Peninsula

Much of the peninsula retains an intrinsic charm, coastal towns and villages remain low-rise; the stonebuilt houses embellished with the bright colors of flowering bougainvillea. Cruise just a few nautical miles from Bodrum’s bustling waterfront deep inside the Gulf of Gökova, dropping anchor in one of the many small bays, all of which offer quiet seclusion in picture-perfect settings. Moor in the harbor of the ancient fourth-century B.C. Greek city of Caria, now known as Knidos, embedded into the westernmost tip of the headland. Here you will find the remains of the temple of Aphrodite, the goddess of love and historically the first major nude statue of a woman in western culture.

Spend the next few days hopping around from mooring to mooring in the largely uninhabited Datça Peninsula. Stretching over 50 miles from east to west from the mainland to Knidos, the peninsula’s western coast is low lying, with vast beaches caressed by the Etesian winds in the summer. To the east, the coast is rocky with inlets and bays backed by pine forests.

Spend the days enjoying watersports in the bay before crossing to the picturesque harbor of Datça.

Full of good restaurants and bars, the marina itself is a hub of activity and a great place to enjoy an apéritif while watching perambulating crowds along the quayside and the reflection of the taverna lights on the water as the sun settles for the night. This is when the pace picks up, the shops staying open far into the night, inviting a post-dinner browse. Sift through the carpets, ceramics and textiles and bargain with the shopkeepers (a Turkish tradition).

Occupying a large part the eastern end of the peninsula, the luxurious D Maris Bay presides over five white-sand beaches and is the perfect place to step ashore for a treatment at the resort’s Mytha Spa, one of the best in the whole Mediterranean.

The culinary scene is equally appealing, offering a sophisticated lineup of dining concepts ranging from a seaside tavern, beach clubs and bars, to outposts of the famed Zuma and La Guérite.

Bozburun Peninsula Between Datça and Marmaris, the Bozburun Peninsula is a sailor’s dream, dotted with picturesque harbors and coves that are only accessible by boat. Nature rules along this stretch of coastline, where stunning views appear around every turn. Quieter than neighboring Datça, at its heart lies the town that gave the peninsula its name.

Famous for building traditional wooden gulets, Bozburun is quiet and relaxed, with tavernas concealed amid the shade of the trees serving traditional local cuisine. It has an authentic feel with a lot of small town charisma. Further along the coastline, Marmaris has a very different feel.

Known as Turkey’s yachting capital, it is situated in one of the world’s largest natural harbors and has a very ancient history due to its geographical position. The bay itself has always enjoyed a strategic location, partly thanks to its natural harbor protected by a narrow passage and a fortified town. Its castle dates back to the 14th century, and in the more recent past, Admiral Nelson took shelter here while preparing for the Battle of the Nile and his victory over the French Armada. Today the bay enjoys a different type of sailing activity, attracting vessels of all sizes from sailing yachts and superyachts to Turkish gulets. Stroll along the waterfront, where most of the socializing takes place, avoiding the blaring beats of the promenade and seeking out the boutique-lined streets and a vibrant bazaar bustling with Turkish trinkets.

Tip – Catch an open-air concert in the amphitheater in the older Kaleiçi district F Bay of Ekincik Cruising east from Marmaris you will come across the beautiful pine-clad Bay of Ekincik. The conservation area has stunning beaches that have often been compared to the white sandy beaches of the Maldives. Jump in and swim near the breeding grounds of the loggerhead turtle before taking a local boat to the Roman ruins of Caunus; the ancient city is located on the Dalyan River. The Venetian-style channel meanders between the cliffs that shelter small tombs built by the Lycians in the 4th century B.C. Further along is the Roman site of Caunus, with its baths complex and impressive amphitheater that dominates the ancient harbor.

E Gulf of Fethiye The next step of your itinerary takes you to the Gulf of Fethiye, a large inlet with Göcek and Fethiye at its head. Having had a difficult time of recent, the city that never sleeps has put its troubles behind and is again welcoming visitors to enjoy its bright lights and culture. Pillow talk The classy I.M. Pei-designed Four Seasons Hotel still draws New York’s most discerning visitors. Minutes from the cool, green calm of Central Park, this iconic hotel exudes luxury, with handcrafted furnishings, decadent marble tubs and magnificent views. If the short stroll to Madison Avenue’s shops doesn’t appeal, the hotel’s chauffeur can take you there in the Rolls Royce. The opulent Midtown flagship The Baccarat has Gilles & Boissier crystal-filled interiors and is wonderfully blingy.

The Crosby Street Hotel has a quirky English feel courtesy of designer Kit Kemp, with eclectic combinations of colors and furnishings. The bar serves some of the city’s best cocktails alongside bistro-style food made with produce from its own rooftop kitchen garden. Eat, Drink & Dance At Oiji, Korean born chef-patrons Brian Kim and Tae Kyung Ku have created an intimate East Village hit, which continues to garner ecstatic reviews. Traditional Korean drinks such as Seoljungmae plum wine are paired with beautifully presented fluffy snow crab, jellyfish and honey butter chips. New York’s most authentic French brasserie, Balthazar is always bustling as is Lafayette, Chef Carmellini’s grand café and bakery, with gorgeous Roman and Williams interiors. For the best Italian, Via Carota in the West Village has quietly become the New Yorker foodie’s favorite restaurant. Feroce, by Francesco Panella of Antica Pesa fame, is in the Moxy NYC Chelsea hotel in the flower district and is a haunt for countless A-listers.

Keep an eye out for the Sant Ambroeus coffee shops for Milanese fare and try the signature chocolate cake on Sotheby’s terrace. For the best pizza try Cozzolino and Procino’s offering at Ribalta.

Any yacht or vessel that was not built in the USA and has therefore never paid U.S. customs duty, or a vessel that has been built in the USA but then exported and currently operating under a foreign flag, cannot be offered for sale or charter to U.S. citizens while in U.S. waters until it makes a formal entry into the USA. USA duty – assessed at 1.5% of the appraised value – is a one-time taxable event. A duty-free formal entry can be made if duty had previously been paid and can be proven with a receipt or a returning U.S.-built vessel.

Why are some yachts for sale VAT paid and others not?

Whether you will have to pay Value Added Tax (VAT) on your superyacht purchase depends largely on where you plan to keep it.

A yacht belonging to an E.U. citizen or a yacht with an E.U. country flag must have VAT paid. If the yacht is a non-E.U. vessel and you are planning on keeping the yacht in E.U. waters, VAT may still be applicable and this will depend on the length of time that you are planning to keep the yacht in E.U. waters. VAT rates range from 15% to 25% of the yacht’s value depending on the country. Once it is paid in one country its VAT status is (normally) recognized by other tax authorities. It is possible to bring the superyacht through a country with a lower VAT rate, such as Cyprus, Madeira or Malta, but the removal of a yacht from E.U. waters for a specific period of time may mean VAT must be paid again. Yachts that may be exempt from VAT include those built and moored in the E.U. before a certain past date (often difficult to prove), and those registered outside the E.U., owned by a non-E.U. resident and used only briefly in the E.U. If the superyacht is to be chartered, establishing a company as purchaser in the Isle of Man can also neutralize VAT payments. It is worth noting that it is up to you to prove your yacht’s VAT status and you must always have the correct paperwork onboard.

Who pays the yacht broker’s commission?

The yacht broker’s commission is payable by the seller. The commission is usually ten percent of the purchase price on completion of the sale, split between the selling broker and buying broker in a 40/60 split.
