The smell of salt air and the feel of a warm sea breeze are iconic mnemonics of summer. The curative power of the sea seeps into the blood like medicine – I expect you will agree that it is an unrivaled antidote for life’s ailments. The wash of waves on a sandy beach and the gentle slosh of water lapping against the hull are the white noises of tranquility. These are the sounds of summer. Being aboard a yacht, you are equally at home in a remote anchorage under the stars as you are stern-to in Monte Carlo for a night at the clubs. In whatever direction that warm, salty air directs you, the destination is a mere compass heading away.
Right now, the 2023 summer season is steeped with outstanding opportunities. The frenzied market spurred on by the pandemic has finally reached a stasis, which means there are purchase and charter options available now that were tough to pin down in the last two years. If you had to put off a dream charter last year due to limited availability, this is the year to make that dream come true. And if owning a yacht is on your radar, we are finally seeing a steady increase in inventory that had been squeezed razor-thin just a year ago. Now is a great time to reach out to your broker for charter and purchase inquiries.
It was the cleric John Donne, who penned the phrase, “No man is an island,” more than four hundred years ago. The idiom has aged well and holds true today. Though a yacht is much like an island, it is a professional community that makes the endeavor of yachting effortless, and that, of course, is why we are here.
I am pleased to announce that Northrop & Johnson continues to further our reach through strategic partnerships within supportive industries. Northrop & Johnson is now the official yacht partner for Exclusive Resorts, a private membership club. We are also a gateway resource to IGY Marinas’ Trident Program, which offers invited members special status and infrastructure support at IGY properties around the world. This includes guaranteed dockage, discounted dockage, fuel services and provisioning. In addition, we’re collaborating with the Forbes Travel Guide. This first-of-its-kind program for yachting standardizes quality certifications and crew training to elevate participating yachts with verified luxury cachet. In short, each season we strive to raise the bar of service and excellence for our clients in all facets of the yachting experience.
Join us on the pages ahead, where experts discuss the yachting landscape. Adventures take center stage in this issue’s Toy Box and our New Horizons will showcase noteworthy properties in the hotel scene. We will give you an inside guide to art fairs and explorer timepieces. Behind the wheel, we’ll talk fractional versus full ownership of private aircraft, we’ll look at the latest luxe trends in SUVs, then, after stopping for a hot bite in Boca Raton, we offer a sneak peek at our summer cruising guide. There’s all this and much more on the pages ahead. Kick your shoes off and step aboard. We’re happy you’re here.

SEA CHANGE
NAVIGATOR KNOWS
Navigator talks to yachting experts on their predictions for the future of this exceptional industry
WORDS MIRIAM CAIN
THE EXPERTS
How do you think the yachting landscape is changing?
EO The entire yachting landscape relies on yacht designs that work alongside the ocean rather than in juxtaposition to it. The environment is a top priority for just about every client I meet with; it is has moved way beyond the normal green-washing that we witnessed in the past. Just three years ago, many clients wouldn’t even mention the environment, but now, with the combination of obvious climate change that we can all feel and see, and the restricted availability of fuel due to recent, turbulent events, every client is asking about ways to make their yacht more sustainable, and many are willing to go much further and invest seriously in finding solutions.
DZ With sustainability a key consideration for all businesses in the 21st century, it is hardly surprising that the superyacht industry is following suit and adapting its offering. No one needs a yacht to live, but we all realize that sustainability is high on the agenda and something that must be addressed. Raising awareness is critical and that’s something that Northrop & Johnson is doing with our Responsible Yachting Strategy. We are also seeing a change in both charterer and owner cruising habits, with many seeking out new destinations. I only see this trend growing, with future owners using their yachts for more remote exploration.
JD We are seeing an increase in younger owners, who are typically more in tune with the effects of climate change and ocean pollution and are more likely to request or be open to innovative and sustainable yacht design.
PB Thankfully, we have been fortunate to work with some very ambitious and forward-thinking clients who have given us the opportunity to make an impact in the area of sustainable yacht builds. At Oceanco, we recognized even before the pandemic that there was a cultural shift in what our client base want or would want from their yachts. It’s a dwelling, a home, with little boundary between how they live on board and how they live ashore. The division between “vacation” time and “work” time is not as it used to be. Technology allows these lines to be blurred.
What do you believe is driving this change?
DZ It is evident everywhere you look that the yachting landscape is changing, driven by a number of factors, including a younger generation of yacht owners, new technology, and most importantly, an industry-wide desire to protect the ocean.
EO There are numerous reasons why the industry is evolving. The industry is slowly making headway in its quest to reduce carbon emissions, while clients’ cruising patterns and onboard living habits have had an impact on the design of recent deliveries. I only see designs evolving as younger owners place more importance on the environment and have a tendency to avoid being associated with opulence.
JD We are typically seeing that our family-focused younger clients seek to protect the ocean to ensure its good health to be enjoyed by future generations, hence their desire to learn about and use the latest in sustainable and environmentallyfriendly offerings.
How do you see your role in the future?
EO As designers, I believe we have a role to fulfill to ensure the success of the industry. Some of the most important decisions are made before a client has even selected a shipyard that will affect a yacht’s efficiency. From the type of propulsion to the hull design and general layout, every facet of a yacht’s naval architecture will have an impact on the environment it moves in. We should always try to anticipate developments in propulsion solutions/systems and endeavor to incorporate a degree of flexibility into new yachts so that they might be adapted to whatever energy source may become available in the future.
DZ Everyone in the industry needs to collaborate in order to safeguard yachting for future generations. Not only for clients and their children, but for the livelihood of all those involved in the industry – from the builders and the designers to the suppliers, brokers, right down to the crewmembers – everyone’s cooperation is essential in making the industry a success now and in the future.
JD We have the power to affect real change by showing our clients beautiful, durable, authentic materials that are also sustainable. We have a dedicated sustainability specialist inhouse who has created an incredible resource of information on faux alternatives, how every material is sourced, manufactured and composited, and the advantages of each application.
PB A key part of Oceanco’s identity is our drive to be an industry pioneer. The world doesn’t stand still, and neither should our yachts’ capabilities. We have been investigating new themes and demands through Oceanco’s NXT initiative for three years now, and that work will continue to evolve and change over time. With our newly revealed Energy Transition Platform for AEOLUS, we have shown that there are feasible, future-proofed pathways to net zero available to our clients.
What type of yacht do you see in the future?
EO I think multihulls are the way forward. At the moment, catamarans and trimarans remain something of an anomaly, but with their vast deck space and lower hull resistance, and therefore increased efficiency, I think they will become more acceptable in the superyacht arena. The Cannes Yachting Festival had a whole lineup of powercats on display, and a number of new concepts are based on multihull forms. Our studio is currently working on designs with multihulls, including a 78’ (23.9m) catamaran with Silver Yachts. This is a space to watch.
DZ We have also seen a rise in the popularity of explorationstyle yachts. Clients are looking to enjoy yachting in a much more autonomous way and have a desire to use their vessels to explore off-the-beaten-track cruising areas.
EO Many owners are now looking for simpler yacht designs that have a more robust, commercial exterior but that allow for all manner of activities. Formal spaces have been given over to house more water toys and other amenities to entertain guests for longer periods of time as yachts go further afield.
Everyone in the industry needs to collaborate in order to safeguard yachting for future generations.
DANIEL ZIRIAKUS NORTHROP & JOHNSON
JD The explorer yacht market is most certainly growing as clients look to explore more remote destinations. Clients want to be able to navigate around the globe for extended periods of time in a seven-star environment and it is essential that their yacht can thrive in any terrain, no matter how harsh and inhospitable. We will see more and more yachts with increased tender storage for maximum exploration, ice-class hulls and increased crew capacity to set out on longer expeditions. At last year’s Monaco Yacht Show we launched a new explorer yacht concept with Heesen – the XV67. This hybrid yacht is both a luxury yacht and an explorer that is at home in the Mediterranean but can also visit the Galapagos or the Arctic.
PB Oceanco yachts tell the distinctive stories of their owners, who come to us with visions that go beyond the yachts that already exist – sometimes even beyond our notions of what a superyacht can be. Clients’ increased interest in traveling even further off the beaten track is perfectly aligned with what yachting can offer, and the industry needs to take advantage of this by building yachts for autonomous exploration. The rise of gamma destinations and ocean exploration goes hand-in-hand with the increased interest in high-impact conservation and sustainable builds. At Oceanco, we have already built some groundbreaking yachts in this area, from BLACK PEARL, with her ability to regenerate power by fully utilizing her sails, to the LIFE design approach used on BRAVO EUGENIA, which gave her bestin-class hydrodynamic efficiency and 30 percent less fuel usage compared to a conventional motor yacht of the same size. And, as mentioned previously, with Oceanco’s Energy Transition Platform pioneered on AEOLUS, there is a net zero pathway for clients. With sustainability being the priority for most of us out there, it’s not so much a question anymore, but a definite.
Do you see designs changing to suit onboard living habits?
EO People are coming around to the fact that most yachts operate in warmer climates and, therefore, clients spend the majority of their time out on deck, while internal spaces are heavily underused. We are already seeing a shift in layouts to reflect this, with more living spaces outside and formal dining and sitting areas being discarded in preference for relaxed areas that blend the inside with the outside. I like the idea of adapting the design ethos of a Bali beach house into a yacht layout, whereby only the sleeping areas are air-conditioned and external living spaces are protected from the elements. Reducing internal spaces that need air conditioning will have large energy-saving benefits.
DZ More and more clients are looking to spend prolonged periods on board, which means new sensibilities on how a yacht is used. Office areas have become the norm, while connectivity is more important than ever. Multi-functional, family-friendly spaces are also key areas as multi-generational families spend more time on board together. Interior designs are more conducive to relaxation, with wellness areas and beach clubs becoming the norm on yachts of a certain size. These trends also matter for
the charter market as guests are looking for yachts that have all the amenities – not just in the latest water toys but gyms and spas, and if possible, therapists and trainers within the crew.
JD Our clients are seeking more contemporary, open-plan spaces, with huge expanses of glass allowing light to flood in and the guests to feel close to the natural world around them. Designs are stepping away from the formal dining and entertainment styles that are traditionally found on board older yachts. These trends are showing a true desire to switch off when at sea rather than continuing with formal, business-like entertaining. We are also noticing a continuous step back from the traditional shiny and ornate interiors that have adorned the waters for years for a preference for a pared-back, warm design using light woods, stones and materials that result in clean and fresh spaces.
PB Clients are leading far more active lifestyles and toys continue to be very popular. A wider range of choices is available now, and the clients enjoy the varied experiences they can offer. Tender garages, therefore, need to be large enough to fit the whole spectrum available.
What evolutions in technology do you see in the future?
DZ Technology plays a major factor in every aspect of the industry. From power management to the advances in sustainable materials used on board, evolving technologies reflect the importance of environmental concerns in yachting. Still, while new propulsion methods are undoubtedly of paramount importance, we must not lose focus on the technology that we can use today while developing tomorrows. Advancements in diesel-electric and heat recovery systems are all huge gains that we are seeing more frequently in yachting, while small gains –like replacing halogen bulbs with LED bulbs, better insulation and water purification instead of plastic bottles – all have a role to play in the quest to make yachting greener.
EO As designers, we continuously adapt to new technologies that increase a yacht’s efficiency, but overall, in my 35 years practicing naval architecture, propulsion has basically remained the same. However, there are some exciting variations on existing electronic technology that will, if predictions are correct, be an amazing breakthrough for yachts.
JD There is no denying that the technology available across all design disciplines is increasing rapidly, and as a studio, Winch Design are constantly researching new techniques to make every part of a project as seamless and innovative as possible. Whether it’s sustainable developments within yachts and aviation or increased automation and use of AI in interior design, we take pride in creating firsts in the industry. Winch is also preparing to utilize hydrogen fuel cell technology wherever possible and is growing in confidence when speaking to clients about carbonneutral methods of propulsion. Working with a number of different shipyards who are actively pioneering the development of hybrid technology is enabling us to progress this at a faster rate.
Oceanco yachts tell the distinctive stories of their owners, who come to us with visions that go beyond the yachts that already exist.

Planning for the Future
Preserve the joy of your vacation home with thoughtful planning
Whether your vacation home is a peaceful retreat or the venue for shared experiences across generations, you want to protect your treasured asset for generations to come. Fulfilling that vision will require careful planning with an eye to the evolving needs of your family.
How will future generations use the property?
You have thought — perhaps even dreamed — about how children and grandchildren will use the home in the future, but have you shared your vision? Spouses, children and grandchildren can frequently have preferences they have kept private for fear of disappointing you. Create a safe place for this sometimes-difficult conversation by preparing yourself for alternative viewpoints. Talk before making any long-term plans. Learn what concerns or worries they may have for sharing and maintaining the property in the future. A candid conversation can strengthen the foundation for ongoing family harmony and provide clarity around issues in planning for the future of the property.
What is the right disposition for the property?
There are two typical options for the future — sell the home or transfer it to the next generation, directly or via a trust, limited-liability company or other ownership structure. It is helpful to think of a few key factors before exploring the implications of these options. Review how the title to the property is currently held, and consider the following:
• How will the property be owned and controlled?
• When should a sale or transfer occur?
• How will the property be maintained and used until its sale or transfer?
While it may seem simplest to leave the vacation home to a child or children in your will, weigh the impact to your family. A direct transfer affords no structure or dedicated funding for the management and upkeep of the property for the next generation.
Work with your legal and tax advisors to plan details from the timing of the transfer and selection of trustees and managers, to exit and modification strategies for changing circumstances throughout your beneficiaries’ — and the property’s — lifespan. Advisors can also offer guidance on funding of expenses and options for continuing use and maintenance, as well as opportunities for minimizing taxes.
Transferring the property to a to a revocable or irrevocable trust or limited liability company can offer advantages and protections, while some specialized trust structures, such as qualified personal residence trust may allow you to leverage your available gift-tax exclusion. These options are best evaluated in consultation with an advisor closely familiar with your needs and situation.
Unique considerations for international property?
The allure of a foreign vacation home is simple; planning for its ownership is not. Unique and sometimes complicated tax and wealth-transfer issues arise from owning a second home abroad. Work with your advisors to review tax and wealth-transfer factors as you contemplate or plan for an international home, including:
• Understand the implications of any gift or tax treaties that might apply.
• Assess the tax laws imposed by national and local authorities in the country where you own your vacation home.
• Determine whether you need a foreign wealth transfer plan. If so, your advisors may recommend you consult with tax and legal experts in the foreign country where your vacation home is located.
Well-conceived plans leave more time for what matters most — enjoying the home and creating the memories you will all cherish and share, however needs change over time. To talk with an advisor or learn more, visit northerntrust.com/wealthmanagement

The Destination…
Pair adventure and conservation as you cruise the Caribbean or Pacific coast of Costa Rica. Explore the Osa Peninsula and the Corcovado National Park with its dense rainforests filled with the calls of monkeys and exotic birdsong, tumbling waterfalls and iridescent butterflies. It's nature’s very own playground. AQUANOVA provides the perfect base to take in the 800 miles of this pristine coastline, hopping between beach-fringed islands and plunging into the wild interior with kayak tours and waterfall hikes. From kite surfing and diving to helicoptering into volcanic jungles, expect unique wildlife viewing in Costa Rica’s verdant forests. Spot brightly colored birdlife, red-eyed tree frogs and three-toed sloths. Back on board, tag sharks with leading conservationists and swim with spinner dolphins.
Travel further south and discover the Darién Province and Archipiélago de las Perlas – aka the Pearl Islands of Panama – before cruising to the Isla Coiba. One of the largest marine
parks in the world, the area has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is only accessible with a special permit. However, it is worth venturing here for its world-class diving and one of the largest coral reefs in the eastern Pacific Ocean. Wherever you choose to cruise, there’s certainly no shortage of natural beauty to explore during an adventure in these waters.
The Marinas…
Board AQUANOVA in the Marina Bahia Golfito. Casa Chablé Tulum, Mexico
This recently opened Mexican retreat, which is located on an otherwise untouched stretch of the Caribbean Yucatan coast, lies just 22 miles south of Tulum. However, sitting in the heart of the UNESCO-designated Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve, it is as far away from Tulum’s offerings as possible. The entire property, which started life as a private villa became a renovation project that, thanks to strict laws on any sort of development, has been rebuilt using only local materials such as tropical parota wood and palapa-style roofing. Even the stones and marbles come from the surrounding region. In addition, the property’s main villa, which plays host to five rooms, and a further five standalone oceanfront bungalows, are completely powered by renewable solar and wind energy. There is a wellness curator, a thatchedroof restaurant (serving local fish and ingredients from the resort’s organic gardens) and a spa, but the main draw is the seclusion along the 656’ beach and acres of tropical jungle. casachable.chablehotels.com

LOUIS Xlll
The LOUIS XIII Rare Cask Legacy releases a new limited edition
Launched in June, the latest limited-edition cognac from LOUIS XIII is the RARE CASK 42.1. The third Rare Cask limitededition from the house, the exceptional cognac's aromatic profile is a distinct expression of LOUIS XIII never encountered before with an unexpected 42.1% ABV. Discovered by Baptiste Loiseau, LOUIS XIII’s fifth generation Cellar Master, the single tiercon was unearthed in the cellars of Domaine du Grollet, the home of the LOUIS XIII Legacy. Each of LOUIS XIII's tiercons are made from French oak trees that take over 100 years to reach maturity, containing precious eaux-de-vie sourced from Grande Champagne's terroir. Kept undisturbed, the eaux-de-vie evolves as the liquid deepens with intensity and mahogany hues. This aging process gives RARE CASK 42.1 its inimitable complexity –resulting in an extremely rare effect.
Only 775 decanters of RARE CASK 42.1 will be available worldwide. To complement RARE CASK 42.1's expression and rarity, the 775 limited-edition numbered decanters are handcrafted from black Baccarat crystal. Each decanter's neck is dressed in gold and rhodium finished details and finely engraved with quadrilobed patterns in reference to France's Fleur-de-lys.
RARE CASK 42.1 is the first Rare Cask edition from LOUIS XIII to be presented as a ritual set. The black crystal decanter is accompanied by a pair of glasses, each glass adorned with black quatrefoils and a serving pipette featuring a black medallion.
"While the singularity of a RARE CASK rests on the wonder of nature and the aging of eaux-de-vie, the know-how that it requires to produce is an art form, passed on from generation to generation, where each Cellar Master perpetuates the gestures of his predecessors" shares Baptiste Loiseau.
The tasting of the eaux-de-vie as they age is part of the lifelong purpose of each Cellar Master to preserve the LOUIS XIII Legacy. RARE CASK 43.8 was released in 2009 by previous Cellar Master Pierrette Trichet, and RARE CASK 42.6 in 2013 when Baptiste Loiseau and Pierrette Trichet were collaborating. For the third time in history, in an unexpected departure from the ordinary passage of time, Baptiste Loiseau uncovers RARE CASK 42.1.
"Ten years have passed since the latest RARE CASK was revealed. A singular tierçon set apart for the unicity of its aromas, a true wonder reflecting the power of Nature, which sets the RARE CASK Collection apart. Today, we are thrilled to present the latest wonder RARE CASK 42.1, the result of Time and human talent caring for our Terroir. LOUIS XIII's ultimate expression," says Jean-Philippe Hecquet, CEO of the house of Rémy Martin. Join the LOUIS XIII RARE CASK experience and unravel its wonders here. us.louisxiii-cognac.com

PRIVATE JET FLIGHT OPTIONS
Navigator guides you through the wide range of choices available to those looking to fly private
WORDS DOUG GOLLAN
While flying privately is a great way to travel to and from your yacht – or just about anywhere – the biggest challenge is often to figure out the best options, which vary quite a bit. To begin, the most important point is the understanding that at the end of the day, you will likely have more than one solution. That’s because even if you end up owning your own aircraft, there are times it won’t be right for your mission. Two members of your family will need to be going to different places at the same time; it will be down for maintenance, or the flight crew won’t be available. In other words, it’s a bit like cars in the driveway: chances are you don’t just have one.
On-Demand Charter
On-demand charter means you are booking and buying your flights trip-by-trip. You can do so through a broker or directly with the operator. In either case, your flights will be quoted based on where you are going, when you are going, when you are booking, and any other special requests beyond the number of passengers and the most cost-effective aircraft. Pricing is market-based, commonly referred to as dynamic pricing. A broker will go out to a few operators they work with regularly who they know have the type of aircraft that meets the request. They will get pricing from the operator and add their margins. There are benefits to working with brokers; operators are going to want to sell you on their fleet, whereas good brokers are trusted advisors to their clients. They also know which operators are dependable. Advantages include being able to specify certain aircraft types, ages and configurations. The downside is that once you book, the flights often can’t be changed or canceled. You will also find that virtually everything is an upcharge, from catering to Wi-Fi and deicing. And, if the operator cancels, all they owe you is a refund.
Jet Cards & Memberships
Jet cards and memberships have been around for about 25 years; however, they really took off after the recession of 2008. With nearly 20 percent of all private jets for sale, there was a surplus available for charter. That gave providers – both brokers and operators – the ability to offer fixed hourly rates with guaranteed availability. Instead of having to wait for brokers or operators to quote your trip, you join a program – typically paying for 25 hours of flight time or making a deposit. While on-demand charter quotes must factor in repositioning flights, jet cards are popular because your contracted rate is for occupied hours, for example, when you are in the airplane. Guaranteed availability means that as long as you book your flight a specified number of days before departure (usually one to four days), you are guaranteed an aircraft of a specific category – light, midsize, super midsize or large – at your contracted hourly rate. Whether you are flying from New York to Florida or Wyoming to Oklahoma, your hourly rate is the same, and the cost of repositioning the airplane is at the expense of the provider.
While cards and memberships that offer fixed rates with guaranteed availability make booking flights as easy as sending an email, most programs don’t allow you to specify aircraft types or configurations. They also have a lot of fine print, with contracts running dozens of pages. There are peak days when there can be longer booking windows and surcharges, and in some cases, availability is not guaranteed. Also, where the contracted rates are valid varies. Some U.S. programs offer fixed pricing to include the Caribbean and Mexico, while others are limited to the Continental U.S. As the card market has grown – there are currently over 80 providers – some now just offer the fixed rates as available, meaning you have to be flexible, while others price trips dynamically. Still, once you find a program that fits your needs, PrivateJetCardComparisons.com compares programs by more than 65 variables. It is a minimal commitment and some programs are even refundable.
Fractional Ownership & Leases
If you want a specific aircraft type and configuration, need flexibility to book and change flights within 24 hours but aren’t flexible enough to avoid the peak days of jet cards and memberships, fractional ownership is as close to owning your own airplane as you can get. If you are flying for business, there can be tax benefits. However, fractional shares and leases are typically a five-year commitment, and they make the most sense when you are going to fly in the same aircraft type as, even though programs will allow you to upgrade or downgrade, the extra charges – called the interchange fees – often don’t make sense. In fact, many fractional owners use jet cards and on-demand charter to supplement their shares. Another consideration is that shares start at 50 hours per year, and you can only roll over a limited number of hours. It is the same in terms of overflying. Still, some providers require as little as six hours’ notice to book or cancel flights, and if there is a mechanical issue or the pilot gets sick, your provider gets you a replacement aircraft at no additional cost.
Full Ownership
While jet card users typically fly 10 to 100 hours per year, and fractional owners usually fly 50 to 200 hours, full ownership makes the most sense if you are flying over 200 hours per year. There are many reasons that owning your own airplane makes sense, from wanting your own flight and cabin crew to a specific configuration or cabin design, to the tax benefits and the ability to come and go as you please. However, ownership also means hiring a management company if you don’t intend to start your own flight department. The most important takeaway is understanding that unless you are flying once or twice per year, you may end up using multiple solutions. While flying privately is easy, finding the right solutions takes a bit of time, but your due diligence now will save you from learning expensive lessons later. privatejetcardcomparisons.com

Rolls-Royce Cullinan
Driving the majestic Cullinan has always been a kind of unlikely intersectional experience of automotive performance and hospitality: signature ease-of-driving Rolls-Royce engineering meets the feeling that you are piloting an exceptionally crafted five-star hotel suite. That essence is made even more profound by the recent addition of bespoke “Recreation Modules” as an option for the luxury SUV. Back cargo areas of the Cullinan can be equipped with custom-designed, motorized 1.695 cubic-foot (48-liter) drawers that retract seamlessly and securely into the vehicle’s luggage
area, outfitted with the necessary high-end accouterments for nearly any activity: fly-fishing, snowboarding, photography, on-the-road mixology, mobile DJ’ing, you name it. Moreover, a customer can commission multiple modules for all of their hobbies and easily switch them in or out as needed or remove the module altogether to maximize storage capacity. After a day of wafting along to the Cullinan’s effortless 6.7-liter V12 power plant, a quick sundowner at a roadside vista sounds like a perfect end to the day. rolls-roycemotorcars.com
02 Volkswagen ID. Buzz
One of the most unexpected notes we are hearing from European test drivers of the ID. Buzz is the vehicle’s superior comfort –especially compared to the nuts-and-bolts “peace-mobiles” of the 1960s and 70s to which it presents a modern, all-electric homage. Powered by an edgy 150kW (201hp, approximately) electric motor with a maximum torque of 229 lb-ft, the new ID. Buzz will almost certainly pack more power than the sewing machine-inspired 1,192cc, 30hp flat-four of the original VW buses, but cast into the spectrum of modern mobility, it still won’t be overly awe-inspiring (a leisurely 0 to 62mph slog of 10.2 seconds). However, with seating typically for five and a respectable 263-mile range between charges, you can see that it makes a case for itself on
efficiency. Plus, the ID. Buzz’s passenger comfort features all revolve around appropriate modern technology. Expect 10-color ambient interior lighting, state-of-the-art software and a full menu of digital driver assistance technologies. All touch-and-feel comforts are equally cutting-edge and sustainable: synthetic, non-animal, and often recycled materials instead of leather –particularly in the ArtVelours “ECO” seat covers that are made from 71 percent recovered materials. If your journey is indeed more important to you than where you are going, the ID. Buzz may not get you there ahead of schedule, but it will undoubtedly provide you with a journey met by many smiling faces. vw.com

Mercedes-Benz S-Class 580e Hybrid
For sedan seaworthiness, the Mercedes-Benz S-Class has served as a ne plus ultra example of interior comfort, down to a regulated automatic cabin scent system that can relax you, invigorate you, and everything in between. Now, in a recently announced plug-in version of the S-Class, you can experience the added “comfort” of having a smaller ecological footprint on your trips. The new S-Class hybrid offers a tempered hybrid combo of a three-liter, 367hp six-cylinder power plant paired with a 21.5Wh battery-powered permanent electric motor with a 148hp output (making for a total output of 510hp). But, the large battery and relatively robust battery power means that the car
can often operate without engaging its traditional combustion engine at all. While the electric-only operational range for the S 580e 4MATIC might only be 62 miles, peak torque figures of 369 lb-ft and a top speed of 130mph indicate that MercedesBenz simply didn’t want to sacrifice any performance aspects of this flagship sedan to its alternative power source: 0 to 60mph in 5.1 seconds and all the interior comforts – like rear-seat calf massage and multi-stage interior lighting derived from the ultra-luxe MercedesMaybach S-Class – one would expect from MB’s winning top-of-the-line sedan.

Jaguar Limited Edition F-PACE SVR 1988
Jaguar’s unrivaled heritage a maker of eminently graceful sedans may have slowly morphed recently into more focus on its pure sports cars and extraordinary stable of luxury crossovers, but fear not. Much of the stately performance/nimble handling of, say, an XJ saloon of old has found its way to the maker’s F-PACE SUV line, with the added comfort of space. The high performance SVR Edition is an outstanding case-in-point: on the outside, expect racing-inspired and one-off bespoke elements like a Midnight Amethyst deep purple exterior paint and Champagne Gold alloy wheels and accents in the only 394 examples produced (to match up to the 394 laps completed by Jaguar’s winning team at Le
Mans in 1988). It might at first seem odd to award this kind of special race-inspired detail to a luxury SUV, but consider the perfectly appropriate interior flourishes: open-pore carbon fiber finishers, semi-aniline ebony leather upholstery and exclusive Sunset Gold satin detailing across the dashboard, steering wheel spokes, gear shift paddles and the heated-and-cooled front performance seats. Given that, the race-honoring DNA also delivers a very nice bit of extra comfort oomph to long-haul trips, along with the capabilities of its blistering 5-liter V8 supercharged power plant. CULTURE SPY
With TEFAF/Maastricht in the rear-view mirror and Art Basel/Miami Beach still a way off in 2023, here’s a quartet of intriguing, very different, upcoming global art fairs to whet your visual appetite
WORDS MIKE ESPINDLE
Art Basel
Switzerland, June 15-18
Even if you’re a regular habitué of the Art Basel/ Miami Beach art show (which is scheduled for December 8-10 at the end of this year), you really do owe it to yourself to visit the original in Switzerland this summer. If you haven’t been, or haven’t been in a while, the show epicenter, the Messe in Basel (detail shown above), recently underwent some apt remodeling and re-envisioning in the past few years to become a more artful venue, stretching beyond a mere municipal convention center. While the site hosts multiple industry shows throughout the year, Art Basel is really when the Messe – and indeed the whole town of Basel – pulls out the stops for visitors. Expect attendance from over 200 leading globally important galleries, with over 4,000 artists from five continents represented. The ongoing grouping of unexpected, out-of-the-box works – curated by art historian Giovanni Carmine and dubbed Unlimited –promises to be extra special this year. artbasel.com
Tokyo Gendai
Yokohama, July 7-9
The inaugural Tokyo Gendai show is slated to bow during the relative lull of summer at the Pacifico convention center in Yokohama this year, but offers a lot of promise as Asia’s newest, most innovative art fair in response to strong art show scenes in both Hong Kong and Korea. Offering a particularly innovative VIP program for attendees that extends into studio visits and cultural experiences throughout the Tokyo region, this show is organized by the esteemed organization The Art Assembly; so for a first-off experience, it certainly plays like a safe –and interesting – bet for visitors and collectors. Expect 80 to 100 galleries to be represented. Japan in the sunny summertime? Why not? tokyogendai.com
The Armory Show & Independent 20th Century
New York City, September 8-10
The titular post-Labor Day show to kick off the hub of the art season, The Armory Show will return to the cavernous Javits Center in New York City. With significant growth seen at last year’s show (240 exhibitors), organizers hope to expand to fill the space even more in 2023. A trio of notable curators – ICA/Boston’s Eva Respini, Carcoss/ Tagish First Nation curator Candice Hopkins, and Whitney Museum Curator of Performance Adrienne Edwards (pictured right) – have been selected to run special programming for the show, and hopes run high for some intriguing and inventive agendas, events and happenings. thearmoryshow.com
For those in the know, the second edition of Independent 20th Century runs concurrently with The Armory Show at the Battery Maritime Building at Cipriani South Street. Its more than 30 exhibitors work overtime to highlight modern works that expand the accepted boundaries and definitions of 20th Century art. Expect to discover some outliers there if you attend. independenthq.com
Frieze London & Frieze Masters
London, October 11-15
Definitive arts publication group and platform Frieze’s important contemporary art fair at The Regent’s Park, London, will run concurrently with the Frieze Masters show (which focuses on works made before 2000). As with years past, expect upwards of 160 exhibitors, curated with the organization’s uncannily exacting eye on works and artists that are at once groundbreaking, important and, usually, at a tipping point for speculative collecting. Under newly named curator Fatos Üstek, Frieze Sculpture, the public art offshoot of the shows that runs in The Regent's Park from September 20 – through Frieze London and Frieze Masters – until October 29, will certainly greet show-goers, and London’s populace-at-large, with an unforgettable feast for the eyes, as well. frieze.com

Rolex Yacht-Master 42
Rolex rarely debuts a drastically new watch-construction approach without indicating an enduringly faithful commitment to that newness. Although the Crown did show a limited-run titanium version of its ultra-dive-pro Deepsea Challenge timepiece last year in Geneva, the brand indicated an all-in attitude towards titanium with none other than the tried-and-tested Yacht-Master 42. Rolex’s special grade 5 RLX titanium, however, takes the notoriously lightweight and durable material to another level. We expect considerable heft from a Rolex, but this 42mm, 100-gram Yacht-Master floats onto the wrist. RLX titanium can take both brushed satin finishing and polishing, so the overall appearance is sophisticated and attractive without taking away the distinctive color and relatively matte appearance of the material. It’s not trying to be a lightweight visual alternative to steel. The pivot to titanium has also opened up some attractive new design cues, like the black raised numerals on the black ceramic bezel insert. But, in every other respect, this watch is unmistakable as a seafaring sport watch. rolex.com

Ulysse Nardin Freak ONE
The original Ulysse Nardin Freak debuted in 2001 and presented a fascinating, how-does-it-work, kinetic art marvel for watch fans worldwide. Jump to today, and the redesigned Freak ONE is an unmitigated showstopper. Still employing its unique loaded-up carousel minute hand that contains every element of the movement and rotates on its own axis and bold under-riding hour hand design, the new execution, while still undeniably artful, is now more streamlined and recognizably “watch-y” (albeit, to us, the redesigned carousel minute arm looks a lot like an anchor; perhaps an ode to the watchmaker’s relationship with maritime chronometry). Expect the unique grinder automatic engine –with a 72-hour power reserve – to drive the visual spectacle playing out above the dial and provide a crown-less beating heart for the Freak ONE. That next-gen techno feeling is bolstered by a bold 44mm black DLC-coated titanium case and 5N rose gold bezel construction that ups the sophistication factor, but still offers a tough wrist presence. The new Freak ONE’s design cues may open up more and more variants for the artful timepiece down that road. Keep an eye on the Freak.

Richard Mille RM 07-04 Automatic Sport
While watchmaker Richard Mille is no longer exhibiting at the Watches and Wonders event, its introduction just prior to the show of the colorful RM 07-04 Automatic Sport spoke volumes. One could easily view the chromatic play on the models as a unisex appeal to women who appreciate fine watchmaking, especially considering the world-class female athletes the brand has brought on as spokeswomen. But this example, in a burgee-recalling blue-and-orange colorway, is not only the most maritime, it is also the most gender-neutral. A cuttingedge quartz TPT (a lightweight fusion of quartz, not carbon, fibers) tonneau case contains a very artful skeletonized CRMA8 automatic caliber movement with unrivaled levels of shock resistance. No matter whose wrist the 07-04 Automatic Sport rides on, it is designed for active individuals to the extreme. richardmille.com
Chopard L.U.C 1963 Heritage Chronograph
The storied jewelry and watch Maison revealed an impressive new version of its automotive-aligned Mille Miglia timepiece at the Geneva show, however, it is this deep green, vintage-inspired 42mm steel, manual-wind, Chopard L.U.C 1963 Heritage Chronograph that caught our eye. This wrist instrument is jam-packed with that authenticgravitas-meets-cutting-edge mix that collectors love. While a hand-wound chronograph may hold some chic throwback appeal, the COSC-certified 03.07-L movement that powers this timepiece carries some special modern construction approaches and an exceptional level of finish that have earned it the Poinçon de Genève quality hallmark. But it’s the shimmering steel case and lugs, mushroom chrono pushers, prominent crown, tricompax subdial array, modernist indices, and simple, stylish brown leather/green back/single notchstitch strap that presents a wrist look that is simply dashing and always appropriate. chopard.com

02 Halehouse Spa at Stanly Ranch, Napa, California, USA
From biohacking recovery to rejuvenation therapies, the secret to performance gains is all about the recovery sessions. Offering a wide range of holistic treatments, Amangiri’s approach to wellbeing focuses on unifying the mind and body to create a state of harmony. All treatments begin with a Native American Smudging Ceremony – a nod to the Navajo, who have lived here for centuries. The swirling smoke clears negative energy, helping to set the intention for the rest of the experience. Post-treatment, the desert spa has a water pavilion featuring a step pool, plunge pool, steam room and sauna. Guests can also enjoy a range of physical activities with an expert team of guides, including hiking, biking, rock climbing and horseback riding. aman.com

A LONG MEDITERRANEAN WEEKEND
With a pleasant year-round climate, deep natural harbors, extensive superyacht facilities and a fantastic infrastructure, the Mediterranean islands of Malta, Gozo and Comino are perfect for a long weekend cruise
Cruising
Whether you’re looking to relax on board, swim and snorkel the crystal blue waters or discover the shipwrecks strewn along the ocean floor, the waters lapping the Maltese islands are ideal for all manner of activities. Combined, the coastlines stretch some 180 miles around the three islands, offering a range of sheltered anchorages and harbors.
Located at the heart of Malta in the Mediterranean’s largest natural harbor is the deepwater port of Grand Harbour Marina – the perfect location for embarking on a cruise around the islands. While meandering around Malta, the waterborne will come across picturesque fishing villages, beautiful anchorages, secluded bays and long stretches of sandy beaches, including nine with Blue Flag status. From Marsaxlokk to Golden Bay and Gnejna in the south, to Mellieha, St Paul’s Bay and Selmun in the north, the island has plenty to offer the yachting crowd. Comino is just a short cruise away and is where the famed Blue Lagoon boasts clear azure waters, while rugged Gozo offers more fantastic beaches (three Blue Flag), hidden coves and waters hosting some of the world’s top-rated scuba diving sites.
Culture
As one of the most concentrated historic areas in the world, the Maltese islands play host to some of the world’s oldest sites. Malta’s capital of Valletta has so much to offer that the entire city has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage site, while the ancient capital of Mdina is testament to the islands’ long and troubled history. Visit the Mdina Church and Dungeon, the temples of Ggantija and Hagar Qim; discover the fourth-century Christian burial chambers of St. Paul's in Rabat and tour Valletta’s St John’s Co-Cathedral.
Cuisine
With six Michelin-starred restaurants, four Bib Gourmands and 25 Michelin-guide recommendations, Malta’s cuisine scene rivals those of top culinary capitals in the world. From Michelin-starred restaurants such as the de Mondion, Noni and the newly crowned Fernandõ Gastrotheque, to family-run tavernas serving the catch of the day and street food like the traditional Pastizzi (best eaten on Malta’s sun-kissed cobbles), the islands offer a culinary extravaganza. Menus are dominated by seafood-focused dishes – with Maltese specialties including tender octopus in red wine or langostinos and lemon cooked in seawater, while inland the national dish of rabbit stew in a rich broth showcases the eclectic food culture of the islands. To accompany such gastronomic excellence, Malta’s burgeoning wine scene includes an array of award-winning vineyards.

The volcanic Lipari Islands are home to some of the most dramatic landscapes and fascinating historical sites in the Mediterranean. Easily combined with an Amalfi Coast itinerary, or on their own, the islands have the air of a place where time has stood still. SET JETTING
TERRA FIRMA
As set-jetting becomes a travel trend, Navigator takes a look at the top on-location destinations working their way into our travel plans
WORDS MIRIAM CAIN
The term “set-jetting” is now listed in the Collins English Dictionary, where it is described as “the practice of visiting places used as locations in feature films.” And it’s not just film settings that are tempting viewers to visit; it seems that television has taken over from Instagram as a key travel influencer as travelers are increasingly inspired by their favorite shows. According to Netflix, 70 percent of programs viewed on the streaming channel were filmed in a foreign setting, many of which were in some of our favorite vacation hot spots. The halo effect of hit shows has turned many of these stunning filming locations into exciting holiday destinations. From Paris to Sicily, Rome to Montana, take inspiration and add a touch of set-jetting to your travel plans.

Succession
Siena & Lake Como, Italy
Some locations around the world instantly bring to mind iconic moments on screen. James Bond has been to most, but one that stands out for its stunning backdrop is Lake Como. In Casino Royale, we see Daniel Craig visiting Lake Como's western shore while the glamorous lake also features in Ocean's 12, but it is the HBO series Succession that brings Italy back to the top of set-jetting lists. The Waystar RoyCo crew head to Tuscany for the last few episodes of the third season, where Roy takes over an estate near the medieval city of Siena. No stranger to the big screen, Siena’s central piazza, Piazza del Campo, is also featured in Bond’s Quantum of Solace. The UNESCO World Heritage Site is surrounded by stunning estates, including Villa Cetinale, which served as the backdrop to film matriarch Caroline’s wedding. The shores of Lake Como also make an appearance as Roy and Roman cruise across the water to a lakeside villa. Rumors have it that the Norwegian fjords are destined to be the next set-jetting destination after starring in the new season of Succession.

The Michelin-starred La Terrazza is complemented by the less formal Il Giardino Ristorante, while a rooftop bar provides the perfect setting for a sundowner. dorchestercollection.com

Whether you are looking to explore new cruising grounds, race in a regatta on the other side of the Atlantic, or looking to purchase a yacht further afield, moving your yacht to new shores could not be simpler.
Legend Benefits
1. No wear and tear or repair costs
2. Cost savings
3. No weather delays
4. Zero mileage on the engines
5. Arrive in ready-to-sail condition
6. Explore new destinations
7. Increased purchase opportunities
For owners looking to transport their most prized possession, booking their yacht on a transport ship opens up new horizons they may not have otherwise considered. It can also be a quick and cost-effective method, while at the same time any wear and tear issues are eliminated.
Of course, given the complexities and logistics involved in transporting such a valuable commodity choosing the right carrier for the right destination is of vital importance. Reputation and reliability are big factors to consider when
choosing a transport service. Legend Yacht Transport is one of the largest yacht transport companies in the world and has built a reputation for reliable, year-round sailings, competitive pricing and customized logistics. Specializing in heavy lift and complex lifts, with their own lifting equipment and loading teams, their operations team and logistics are second to none.
