SUSTAINABILIT Y
What do we really mean when we talk about sustainability? It’s a buzzword that’s often used as a marketing tenet, yet adopting sustainability as a fully integrated initiative requires it to have a concise meaning. At Northrop & Johnson, it means recognizing merit in concepts and practices that not only work in the current environment, but are capable of creating an advantage for future generations. It means not being mired in the repetitive practice of tradition and always being on the lookout for smart innovation. This definition of sustainability applies not only to how we interact with the natural world, but how we function as a company. These are the very practices that have kept Northrop & Johnson (and countless others) on a steady course through the chaos of COVID-19, and it is indicative of the kind of proactive conventions that will yield smooth sailing on the course ahead. In this issue of Navigator, we celebrate developing trends and practices that we foresee capturing the wind on our current tack into an environmentally-savvy future of yachting. We begin the conversation with the CEO of REV OCEAN, a scientific research vessel and the largest yacht in the world. We will look at an exciting new offering in the charter market: research charters. Ecofriendly yacht toys, high-end electric cars and earth-conscious jewelry are also showcased. As we plan our summer escapes, join us on a tour of the environmentally-minded beach clubs of Pampelonne Beach and Stockholm’s luxury eco-hotels. You will get an overview of carbonconscious initiatives coming from the private aviation industry and our partner NetJets. Finally, we highlight anchorages in the Mediterranean where anchoring and tendering ashore present the least potential impact on the ecosystem. If there is anything positive to come out of the unprecedented hardships of the last year, it’s that it has forced us to recognize how interconnected the world has become. Resist all you want, we’re in this together. Smart solutions are out there, and we are on the hunt to find them.

H E A LT H Y OCEANS Many yacht owners are increasingly aware they share a responsibility for the health of the ocean. Leading by example, the mega yacht REV OCEAN was created by owner Kjell Inge Røkke, with a single overarching purpose and ambition: to make the oceans healthy again. When she is delivered in 2023, she will be the world’s largest research and expedition vessel (REV). Navigator talks to Nina Jensen, marine biologist and CEO of REV OCEAN, about the incredible mission this spectacular vessel is about to embark on. WORDS MIRIAM CAIN
01 & 02 At 600 feet (182.8m), REV OCEAN has the capacity to carry state-of-the-art marine equipment, including sonar systems, laboratories, scientific trawls, two helipads and a submarine

Can you introduce REV Ocean and its mission in one sentence? N REV OCEAN is the world’s largest and most advanced research and expedition vessel designed with one purpose: to save life in the ocean. How serious are the issues faced by our planet’s oceans? N I would say the destruction of our oceans is arguably the biggest challenge faced by our planet. The ocean provides us with more than 50 percent of the oxygen we breathe, it provides an essential food source for close to two billion people and employs hundreds of millions of people. It also regulates our climate, provides inspiration, medicines and many other intangible benefits that we aren’t even factoring into the equation. It is a very serious situation and one that we have created in a nanosecond of the planet’s existence. During only my lifetime we have already lost more than 40 percent of life in the ocean and the situation is escalating. Climate change, overfishing and plastic pollution are the main culprits and these are all problems that I believe we can fix if we put our minds to it, collaborate and do the right things, now.
T H E E X PE RT
N Nina Jensen Nina Jensen joined REV OCEAN as CEO in 2018, after 15 years in WWF Norway, where she campaigned for new conservation measures in various roles until becoming Secretary General in 2012. She holds a Master’s degree in Marine Biology from the University of Fishery Science in Tromsø, and is a board member of the Business for Peace Foundation. Nina also serves on the Advisory Board of the Global Opportunity Report, and is a member of the Adjudication Committee for the Nordic Council Nature and Environment Prize, and the Expert Committee of the Thor Heeyerdahl Award.
I understand that COVID-19 has delayed the final build stages for REV OCEAN. When will she now be delivered, and what will her maiden mission be? N Our best estimate currently is that she will be delivered in 2023. Our ambition for her maiden voyage is Pole to Pole, but it all depends on the timing of her delivery as these are very harsh environments that are only accessible, at least for now, at certain times of the year. Although now, of course, the Arctic is melting at an incredibly fast rate and soon it will be open for longer periods of the year. We will shift around our itinerary so that it still puts us in the same region. The aim is for the initiative to be a global one and REV OCEAN will be sailing to all parts of the world’s oceans, not just the Poles. We want to be bold and brave in terms of both the scientific research that we do, the solutions that we are testing, the people that we bring on board and the areas that we go to. The areas that we go to will be guided by our three thematic priorities: climate change, overfishing and plastic pollution.

REV OCEAN is also a mega yacht, so how will her time be split between these dual roles? Will the owner himself be involved and on board for some of the scientific endeavors or are these roles kept separate? N The owner is dedicated to the project and has been involved in every last detail of her development, both in terms of the construction of REV OCEAN and in the mission to find solutions to these ecological problems rather than just the facts of their existence. He will be part of all three of her operating modes: scientific research, exploration, and charter. He will be chartering the vessel at the same level as everyone else; even though REV OCEAN is his initiative, he will still pay the market price to charter REV OCEAN when he wants to use her.
When it comes to resources, the vessels are targeted differently in terms of their purpose. The OceanX has a state-of-the-art communications platform for filming and documentaries, and to my knowledge she is the best vessel out there for this purpose. REV OCEAN will also have state-of-the-art communications facilities on board, but our primary focus is more on scientific research, and we are also a technological test platform for ocean solutions. Hopefully we are in many ways complementary to each other.
Can you give an example of the type of scientific institutions you will invite on board to be part of the mission? How are the applicants selected? N We will hand-pick the scientists, institutions, organizations and individuals that we invite to come out The Schmidt Ocean Institute and OceanX are also with us. The first year of operations will be different to doing great things in ocean conservation. Does future years, though, as it will be a learning process for all REV OCEAN differ from these when it comes to the of us involved. A lot of testing, fine tuning and calibration missions you have planned? Will you be will be done, so we will be inviting partners and friends to collaborating with them? come out with us. At this stage we have already received N Collaborating with such initiatives is extremely more than 100 proposals for projects to undertake in important to us. We are already working with Schmidt the first year, which is way more than we could possibly Ocean and a few other philanthropic research vessels. accommodate. We have established an independent Together, we have formed The Pink Flamingo Club, which scientific committee consisting of global experts in their allows us to get together to share ideas on research projects, respective fields of fisheries, plastics and climate change itineraries, areas of collaboration and how we can best to support us in the selection process. Together with support the U.N.’s Decade of Ocean Science, something our science team, they will filter through the various that we are currently in the middle of. Collaborating, applications based on certain criteria, and will then put sharing resources, ensuring that we are not duplicating forward a recommendation in terms of which projects we efforts and building to each other’s strengths is really should choose. The applications must contribute to REV important. There really is so much that needs to be OCEAN’s mission, be solutions-focused and be multiachieved in order to save the oceans and there is plenty disciplinary with broad diversity (gender, age, geography). of room for all of us to contribute. And, all the data produced by a project has to be openly shared with the scientific community. 03

03 When the 600-foot (182.8m) REV OCEAN is delivered, she will be the largest yacht in the world 04 REV OCEAN is described by designer Espen Øino as a “yacht with a purpose” 05 REV OCEAN will be used to research the impact of CO2 emissions, plastic pollution and unsustainable fishing
In future years we will also have open calls for proposals that we will run together with the Research Council of Norway. They will be completely independent and objective, ensuring the scientific credibility of the entire REV OCEAN initiative. What has the response been like from the superyacht industry? Has it been supportive? N It has been overwhelmingly supportive, and it has been really interesting to see how much positive attention this initiative has created. It has helped us learn more about the way we operate, how we can work together, share information and ultimately come together to contribute to a more sustainable ocean.
05
“NOT EVERYONE NEEDS TO BE AN ENVIRONMENTAL ACTIVIST, BUT EVERYONE CAN PLAY A ROLE IN MAKING OUR OCEANS HEALTHY AND MORE SUSTAINABLE”
In the last issue of Navigator, we interviewed a number of shipyards, including Oceanco, Heesen and Nobiskrug, all of which have built vessels with eco-friendly credentials. Do you believe the industry is moving in the right direction? Is progress fast enough or do you think they could be doing more? N They have certainly made a start and our hope is that REV OCEAN will be a source of inspiration to the superyacht industry. Reducing the environmental footprints of yachting operations and businesses, and finding positive ways in which the industry can contribute to protecting the ocean is of paramount importance. Such initiatives have to start with the owners, who should ensure their own yacht is running sustainably.
30
K E E L L I F E N A V I G A T O R
K N O W S
From implementing basic environmental practices and initiatives in the day-to-day operations and sourcing sustainable products, to switching to alternative fuels or energy sources, there are so many ways in which a yacht can be run efficiently and sustainably that also have cost-saving implications. Owners get so much joy from the ocean, being able to pay back and make a difference should be a priority. Have you been impressed by any company or sector of the industry in particular? N I don’t know enough about the initiatives behind each company in the industry, but I can certainly say that the designer of REV OCEAN, Espen Øino, is an incredible naval architect, and he has been an integral part in integrating sustainability into the design of the vessel and of the other vessels that he is involved with. If you can integrate sustainability into the design of the yachts, then you are building this into the core of the structure. By doing this at the start you are asking the right questions and sowing the seeds for a sustainable future. I would also like to highlight the Monaco Foundation and key Monaco institutions for their sustainable yachting initiatives. We recently partnered with these prominent marine conservation organizations in an effort to jointly develop projects to combat the negative impact of climate change and plastic pollution in the ocean. What can a yacht owner do on board their own yacht to ensure they are as eco-friendly as possible? Do you believe a yacht can ever be really “green”? N Unfortunately, the complex logistics involved not only in the build but in the operation of a superyacht means that it can never be truly “green”. However, they can always be “greener,” and any effort is a step in the right direction. How are you mitigating the environmental impact of REV OCEAN’s build? N We have tried to integrate sustainability into all aspects of REV OCEAN’s build and operations. From the construction of the vessel, the various materials used and their sourcing, to the propulsion of the vessel, sustainability has been key in every decision. We are developing specific food programs, clothing programs and water programs to make sure that we are sourcing sustainably, that we eliminate waste and emissions and that we try to be a complete circular and waste-free system. Anything that we can’t eliminate we will offset through mangrove restoration, and we won’t have any single-use plastics on board. 06 REV OCEAN is a hybrid vessel combining a luxury yacht interior with an ice-class hull and laboratories of a polar-research vessel
K E E L L I F E N A V I G A T O R K N O W S
What would your advice be to a yacht owner wanting to do their part in ocean conservation? N Lead by example. Look at your sustainability efforts and ensure that you are running your yacht as sustainably as possible. Even a small step, like inserting a filter in the laundry facilities, will stop microplastics from entering the ocean. Take it a step further and join initiatives such as SeaKeepers, participating in their marine conservation program and using your yacht as a platform for marine research. You could also take part in beach clean-ups, or offer your yacht to charterers looking to take part in similar programs. What if you don’t own a yacht, can you be involved? N There are several initiatives all over the world, including programs such as the Water Revolution Foundation, that you can get involved in. There are also a number of yachts available to charter for scientific research. Read about Northrop & Johnson charter yachts HARLE and USHER and their scientific research missions on the following pages.
06
As a marine biologist, how do you see the future? N I am an eternal optimist—you really need to be in this business as it can be quite depressing at times. I have always been very solutions-oriented, and I am optimistic that we can make a change. It will require hard work, a lot of money and people coming together and doing things radically different. I also believe this can be done in a fun way. How can we ensure general society understands the impact of plastic and how important ocean conservation is? How can any of us be part of the solution? N It is quite simple. Cut out single-use plastics entirely, reduce your meat consumption and buy only sustainablycaught seafood. And finally, who is your inspiration? N David Attenborough. He is so passionate and inspirational, using his knowledge to improve the state of the planet and to change the way we think, all in a positive and enthusiastic way. He appeals to everyone, no matter their age. A true icon.

“Eco-conscious,” “eco-friendly,” “green”… these are environmental buzz words we are hearing a lot of these days as the push to help save our planet continues within scientific communities and beyond. As outlined in Navigator’s interview with Nina Jensen on the previous pages, the oceans cover more than 70 percent of the earth’s surface and thus play an integral role in the health of our planet. Understanding our oceans, protecting them, and sustaining them is of the utmost importance. As luxury yachts need the oceans to cruise, it benefits yacht owners, charter guests, captains, crew and those within the yachting industry to work toward healthy seas. This is why the owners, captains and crews of Northrop & Johnson charter yachts HARLE, a 146-foot (44.65m) Feadship, and USHER, a 154-foot (46.94m) Delta, have teamed up with various scientific agencies to use the yachts not only for on-water enjoyment, but also for the betterment of the oceans and earth. This partnership between the yachts and the scientists began as early as 2015, according to HARLE’s and USHER’s Fleet Captain Carey Drake. “When we began this initiative, we partnered with The International Superyacht Society (ISS) and The International SeaKeepers Society to not only help the oceans and the environment, but also to bring scientific research into the guest experience. At the time, we were working with the two organizations to put together scientific charter itineraries that would benefit both charter guests and the scientific community. These packages included shark tagging in The Bahamas, island cleanups and more.” 03

04 Scientific missions can coincide with charters, allowing guests to participate should they wish 05 USHER has participated in shark tagging in The Bahamas 06 & 07 With accommodation for up to 12 guests, USHER offers the best of both worlds – luxurious surroundings and eco-capabilities 08 Jump in and experience all the oceans have to offer while participating in some scientific research
Since then, USHER and HARLE have participated in a multitude of scientific research programs with various organizations. The ownership of the yachts is extremely eco-conscious and understands the importance of preserving the oceans for both the health of planet earth but also for enjoyment. Captain Carey, who was the captain of HARLE at the time when these programs began, also is extremely eco-minded and has participated in many of these scientific programs himself.
aboard. The mission involved tagging sharks to understand their migratory patterns and to gain other information about the species. In addition to being a fun and exciting charter experience for guests and benefitting the scientific community and planet earth, these types of scientific partnerships with yachts also allow yacht owners and crew to get in on the excitement and fun, participating in the missions and seeing firsthand the contribution they are providing to the health of the planet.
One of the most notable programs took place aboard HARLE during an Atlantic crossing, which is an ideal time for yachts to be utilized for more intensive research as no guests are aboard. Two scientists studying plankton joined HARLE for its Atlantic crossing and set up plankton nets to be dragged during the crossing. “The whole main salon was set up as a lab,” recounted Captain Carey. “The scientists sat at the main salon table with microscopes. Samples were processed in the salon, then the data was frozen and taken to a lab for further processing once we reached the Med.” During this mission, the scientists discovered a new species of plankton. As there is not a lot of funding for scientists to travel into the middle of the ocean to search for plankton, the yacht crossing provided the perfect platform for scientific research without interfering with the yacht’s schedule, or owner or guest trips.
The owner of HARLE and USHER, Captain Carey and the crew of the yachts are committed to continuing these programs. Currently the yachts are working with Florida International University (FIU) to put together trips for Spring 2021 and beyond. “One of the biggest challenges to scientific marine work is just getting out there,” says Mike Heithaus, biologist and Dean of College of Art, Sciences & Education at FIU. “Being able to work with yachts is an outstanding opportunity to integrate data and complete various programs and missions. The citizen science movement is really important to understanding what we do as scientists. For decades, the programs of Earthwatch have helped bring people in and the programs aboard yachts are kind of the mobile on-water version. Some of the programs and missions we’re discussing are surveys of sea turtles, during which scientists would tag them—possibly camera tag them—to see where they go, what they do, etc.” Heithaus maintains that missions related to sharks are extremely important as they are so vital to the Caribbean eco-system. The more scientists learn about sharks, the better equipped they are to help stabilize their environment.
One of the most prominent missions that USHER has participated in was shark tagging in The Bahamas. The charter was gifted to the scientific program, although this kind of mission can also be easily done with guests

The Caribbean presents an ideal place to interact with these animals. Furthermore, when tagging sharks, owners, charter guests, captains and crew are able to participate in the initial tagging exercise, and they can also follow along with the shark as they travel the globe via the tag. Heithaus says FIU also is working on some whale and dolphin projects for the future. Other projects include deploying reef cameras, collecting water samples to monitor microplastics, filtering water samples for DNA, and other missions that are only able to take place as scientists move from point A to point B, say during a yacht charter or crossing. “These types of partnerships with yachts allow us to gather data from places we can’t often get access to,” says Heithaus.
06
One unique aspect of HARLE and USHER that ensures these yachts are especially well-suited for scientific charters and research missions is that they benefit from a variety of support vessels that are able to host the scientific research teams if a mission is occurring during a charter, ensuring guests can participate while still enjoying a private on-water luxury holiday. Some proposed 2021 missions available include tagging and surveying sea turtles, tagging sharks, deploying cameras, censusing and tagging grouper and mahi-mahi, and deploying predator models to monitor fish response in The Bahamas around Cape Eleuthera and the Exuma Cays Land & Sea Park. In the Bahamian Andros Island area, tagging and filming silky sharks and undertaking sawfish surveys provide possible scientific charter opportunities. The Abacos Islands are best for tagging sea turtles, sharks, whales and dolphins as well as deploying cameras. A charter in the Florida Keys is ideal for missions on shark tagging and surveys of sea turtles, sperm whales and dolphins. There also are a variety of missions that can be done almost anywhere in the Caribbean and possibly further afield, which include surveying coral reef fish, collecting small crabs and shrimp for data, deploying cameras to remotely survey sharks, collecting water samples for testing and surveying whales and dolphins.
07
Often a yacht charter holiday is all about luxury and on-water fun, but for those eco-minded charter guests or those who want to give back, participate in some scientific research and help the oceans, a scientific yacht charter may offer the best of both worlds.
08
In addition to USHER and HARLE, there are many other yachts on the water with crew and owners who participate in scientific missions and give back to help the oceans and environment. If you are interested in a scientific charter, please contact your Northrop & Johnson charter broker. If you are a yacht owner interested in utilizing your yacht for scientific missions while on charter—whether it’s not in use or both—we would be happy to connect you with FIU or another scientific research firm. The finest things in life are worth waiting for, and Louis XIII takes this sentiment to the extreme. With its visionary ideas and artistic collaborations, the legendary cognac house is raising a toast to the next 100 years. Over the past year, planning for the future has become ever-more challenging, so it’s reassuring to find companies that are still thinking well ahead—in one rare case, up to a century in advance. This confidence comes from firm foundations. Louis XIII Cognac traces its roots to 1874 when this legendary spirit was first created by Paul-Émile Rémy Martin. Since then, the brand has mastered the art of combining tradition with visionary innovation and creative collaboration. All three are honored in many and varied ways—not just in the making of the spirit itself, but also in the company’s commitment to the customer experience and its evolution as a brand.
Centuries of collaboration To become a Louis XIII cellar master is to understand the true meaning of collaboration and patience. The current cellar master, Baptiste Loiseau, draws on knowledge handed down by generations of Louis XIII experts. He also has the privilege of working with the finest eaux-de-vie that his predecessors laid down decades ago; just as he is now setting aside the very best eaux-de-vie produced by today’s Grande Champagne winegrowers and distillers for the benefit of his own successors. As such, Loiseau is a link in an extraordinary chain of partnerships that reaches back nearly 130 years to the beginnings of the brand, and extends a century ahead to the cognac experts of the future.

Tasting notes Some partnerships, however, have a more immediate effect. Louis XIII Cognac was named in honor of King Louis XIII of France—a composer and patron of music— and this musical heritage was recently celebrated with a unique blend of creative inspiration and innovative technology. Last year, a pair of exclusively choreographed robotic arms were used to toast together two Louis XIII Cognac glasses. They did this with such precision that they created a perfect G-sharp note. This inspired a musical composition titled One Note Prelude, written by Parisbased Israeli pianist Yaron Herman using only this note. “The symphony has a complex simplicity. It’s just one note, but with many dimensions – and many revelations. The idea that one note, like one drop of Louis XIII, can evolve over time and reveal itself was something that I found fascinating” says Yaron Herman. The art of visionary thinking Taking artistic innovation and its legacy a step further, Louis XIII has also created a movie and a song that no person today will likely ever be able to appreciate. Just like its finest eaux-de-vie, both creations have been “locked away” for 100 years for future generations to discover. The movie, made in 2015, portrays how the world might look in a century, and is secured in a safe that will automatically unlock in November 2115. This was followed by a song in 2017, created to reflect our responsibility to the planet. The only thing that can destroy the recording is if the safe it is in becomes submerged in water. If, as scientists project, global sea levels continue to rise due to climate change, and we do nothing to prevent this, the song will be lost forever. This inspired creative venture is just one more reflection of the spirit of Louis XIII; always thinking ahead. 03

FLIGHT DECK S U S TA I N A B L E F LY I N G Ensure your preferred supplier is comitted to reducing the impact of your flying WORDS DOUG GOLLAN
If you worry about carbon emissions from your private flights, keep in mind that aviation worldwide accounts for just 2% of CO2 output, and private jets are just 2% of that 2%. That number is set to fall even further via new sustainable aviation fuels (SAFs), and a growing number of carbon offset programs being offered by industry players large and small. The biggest news in the last year was NetJets’ announcement that it was consolidating a host of sustainability initiatives to provide a broader platform to encourage change from its position as an industry leader. Prominent is its commitment to purchase sustainable aviation fuel, which cuts carbon emissions by up to 85%. Then in February, the world’s largest private jet operator followed up with “a significant investment” in WasteFuel, a next-generation waste-tofuel company that aims to transform landfill waste into SAF. It is the first private aviation company to buy a stake in the production of sustainable aviation fuel. It will also purchase a minimum of 100 million gallons of WasteFuel’s SAF over the next 10 years.
Availability is currently the biggest issue, so having the world’s largest private jet operator as a committed customer will help grease the wheels, say industry experts. NetJets had been talking to corporate accounts about its carbon credit program and now includes it in every proposal. It also published a rate card for buying carbon offsets by aircraft type. It also offers customers various options to ensure it is as simple as possible, including buying offsets for their entire program, by flight or even by hour. Costs range from US$25.58 per hour for an Embraer Phenom 300 light to US$68.72 for an ultra-longrange Bombardier Global 6000. NetJets Europe has been carbon neutral since 2012, and starting this year the entire company will offset its training and administrative flights, which equate to approximately 1,600 flights. Proving that no idea is too small, additional recycling bins were installed at headquarters to keep them convenient and top-of-mind.
01 As an industry leader, NetJets has announced a host of sustainability initiatives to encourage change
L U X L I F E F L I G H T D E C K
NetJets is not alone. Global private jet operator VistaJet launched its Sustainability in Aviation program during Davos last year. In a September update, it said 80% of contact customers opted in to compensate for their fuel use-related emissions. This saw VistaJet offset almost 100,000 tons of CO2—equivalent to over 21,600 passenger vehicles driven for one year or over 12.7 billion smartphones charged. In addition to making a commitment to purchasing SAF, VistaJet eliminated 90% of single-use plastics across its fleet, while advances in flight-planning management enabled it to cut fuel burn by 8%. Customers helped reduce their carbon footprint around London by being flexible with their departure airport choice, thereby cutting the repositioning of aircraft. Directional Aviation, the second largest fractional fleet operator, is also active in its sustainability initiatives. For its Flexjet Europe unit launched last November, all customer flights will be fully emissions-neutral. On top of that, there is an additional 300% offset. In January, it also launched a separate company, 4AIR, which it is touting as the “First emissions-reduction solution provider focused solely on helping private aviation participants to offset or reduce their emissions of carbon dioxide and other climate-related pollutants.” Companies can join and then achieve four different levels based on corporate objectives.
Buying carbon credits is becoming easier and a growing number of brokers, including Air Charter Service, Paramount Business Jets, Private Jets Services Group, and Victor have all introduced programs. U.K.-based Air Charter Service says adoption is being driven in part by new customers who have come to private aviation due to the COVID-19 crisis and are aware of carbon offsetting and its value. According to NetJets, the industry drive to sustainability is also being helped by corporate clients who have to fulfill CEO mandates that filter down to how employees travel. Still, it is not completely clear if sustainability is yet a priority for passengers. A JETNET iQ survey of operators—including management companies and corporate flight departments—found over 60% saying COVID-19 health protocols is their top concern by a 3-to-1 margin over cost. Only 0.2% say using sustainable fuel is their priority, which compares to 3.3% who are concerned about Wi-Fi availability. Whether you will make sustainability policy a consideration in choosing who you fly with remains to be seen. While electric vehicles remain way off, experts believe that widescale SAF availability will be a game-changer. That may be a good thing. In Business Jet Traveler’s annual reader survey, when asked what developments they are most looking forward to, having a supersonic private jet ranked first.

AUTO DRIVE THE FUTURE Navigator picks out some of the most exciting electrically-propelled vehicles on the market WORDS SIMON DE BURTON
Having had its hand forced by the increasing focus on protecting our environment, the global automotive industry has dramatically accelerated its move toward pure electric power across the whole spectrum of vehicle types – not least those in the luxury and high-performance sector. It is an area that Rolls-Royce pioneered an entire decade ago with its remarkably advanced Phantom 102EX prototype of 2011. Built as a feasibility study and sent on a world tour in order to give Rolls-Royce owners and other opinionformers the chance to drive the first electric super-luxury car, the majestic Phantom was revealed to be the perfect vehicle with which to exploit the silent power of batteries. After driving it on test for the Financial Times, I observed that, “....it immediately became obvious that if any car should be electrically powered, surely it’s a Rolls-Royce?
“Silence is one of the most noted features of the standard Phantom.... and with 800 Newton Metres of torque available from the get-go (as opposed to the petrol car’s 720 Newton Metres) the electric version offers even better response, while the range of 125 miles shouldn’t be a problem. After all, a Rolls-Royce is less likely to be seen on a motorway than in one of the world’s great cities, wafting gently between luxury retailers.” In the event, however, few Rolls-Royce buyers expressed an interest in saving the planet so, the project was shelved. But things have changed dramatically since then, not least with marques such as Jaguar Land Rover pledging to go “all electric” by 2025 and Bentley by the end of the decade. It is therefore inevitable that Rolls-Royce will make an announcement along the same lines sooner rather than later—especially since it has the experience of creating the majestic 102EX to build on. For now, however, here are five of the most impressive all-electric, high-end cars on the market.

01 Porsche Taycan Although it only entered production in 2019, the Taycan became Porsche’s second best-selling model (after the 911) last year, with more than 20,000 sold around the world. Praised for combining its electric drivetrain with all of the performance and much of the feel and character of gas-powered Porsches, the Taycan also displays the marque’s heritage in its styling. Four models are available, ranging from the eyeball-searing, all-wheel-drive Turbo S (with four motors, 761 PS, a top speed of 162mph and a 0-60mph time of 2.7 seconds) to the new “entry-level” version with rear-wheel-drive, two motors and a top speed of 143mph. porsche.com

02 Audi e-tron® Sportback The e-tron® Sportback is every bit as vast, comfortable and well-equipped as its gas or diesel-engined SUV stablemates— and almost as practical, too. Although it weighs a meaty 2.7 tons (just 22lbs less than the new Rolls-Royce Ghost), flooring its accelerator will send the e-tron® from a standstill to 62mph in an impressive 5.7 seconds, while a full charge of its batteries is said to be good for 240 miles. Designed electric from the ground-up, the battery packs don’t encroach on load space, so, apart from its powerplant and the fact that it won’t go for 500 miles without stopping, it feels like an entirely “normal” SUV. audi.com

03 Tesla Model S Plaid+ Keen to recapture the performance four-door crown from the Porsche Taycan, Tesla has introduced new Plaid and Plaid+ versions of its top-selling Model S. The “tri-motor” cars have an electric motor on the front axle and one on each rear wheel to provide an output of 1,100 horsepower in “+” form—enough to give this quite innocuous-looking executive sedan a top speed of 200mph and a zero-to-60mph time of less than two seconds. Its ability to cover a quarter-mile spring in nine seconds makes it the quickest-ever production car—it boasts a range of more than 500 miles on a full charge. tesla.com

04 Pininfarina Battista As Latin as the Pininfarina Battista might sound, the company is owned by India’s Mahindra & Mahindra, the largest manufacturer of tractors in the world. The remarkable Battista is certainly no tractor, however. Said to accelerate faster than a contemporary Formula One car, the “hyper GT” is based on the platform of the yet-to-beproduced Rimac C_Two while its flowing bodywork was penned by the Automobili Pininfarina design studio and is claimed to be the most powerful road car ever made by an Italian manufacturer. The 218mph Battista has its own soundtrack, too, thanks to a range of tailor-made audio settings that enable it to be driven in almost perfect silence or with the type of visceral aural accompaniment typically expected of a combustion-engined supercar. automobili-pininfarina.com

05 Lotus Evija In 2017, the quintessentially British Lotus marque was bought for £100m in a joint deal between Malaysia’s Etika Automotive and Chinese car giant Geely, which has forged ahead in the development of electric cars. The jewel in its crown is the fabulous Evija two-door coupe. Developed in partnership with F1 expert Williams Advanced Engineering, it has four electric motors producing a combined 1,970 horsepower and can accelerate to 60mph in less than three seconds. Claimed to be the most powerful production car ever, it has a range of 250 miles and a top speed of more than 200mph. Just 130 cars will be made, with first deliveries due this summer. lotuscars.com

The epicenter of the beach club scene, the three-mile stretch of golden sand that makes up Pampelonne Beach has more recently witnessed a green beach club revolution. For some it is an end of an era, for others it’s an environmental win. The move welcomes five new, sustainably-built beach clubs all aimed at the superyacht set, while eight long-running establishments have been closed (rest assured the legendary Le Club 55 remains at the heart of the scene). Additionally, the new clubs have all been designed to be dismantled for the duration of winter to allow the beach and environment to recover. It’s time to weigh anchor and take the tender ashore to discover the newest beach clubs this summer season.

Ducassetrained chefs Yannick Plassard and Christophe Giorgi create sublime dishes with an accent on freshly-caught fish and locally-sourced, sun-ripened vegetables. 02 La Réserve à la Plage For those looking for boho-chic glamor, the understated La Réserve à la Plage has it in spades. The Philippe Starck-designed beach club, which is decked out using natural materials, gives a nod to the heady pop-art vibe of the original St. Tropezian era. Its stylish atmosphere attracts the A-list crowd who come to enjoy the superb Mediterranean fare created by Michelin-starred chef Eric Canino. Having spent several years honing his skills at La Voile, the restaurant at the club’s sister property La Réserve Ramatuelle, Eric’s menu is a combination of classic Provençal cuisine with light, fresh ingredients. 04 La Serena Sit back and enjoy the relaxed environment at the chic new La Serena beach club. Its light and neutral décor — in combination with the sounds of the waves and the sun dappling through the white umbrella canopy—creates a chillout atmosphere that attracts a more bohemian crowd. WELL RESTED E C O -P OW E R E D ISLAND LIFE If you’ve ever dreamt of escaping the rat race to your very own desert island, Over Yonder Cay in The Bahamas is just the ticket for you. 01 Arrive to the exclusive 72-acre Over Yonder Cay by the retreat's own seaplane from Nassau or step ashore during a charter through the Exumas 02 Three wind turbines feed power directly onto the island's A/C grid 03 Over Yonder Cay's culinary team make use of the superb local seafood 04 Meridian House sits on the highest point of Over Yonder Cay
With more than 700 islands, cays and islets, the islands of The Bahamas are a playground made for the waterborne. Best discovered by yacht, the Exumas archipelago lends itself to island-hopping adventures, with exotic wildlife and spectacular beaches at every anchorage. Lying right at the center of the chain is the exclusive 72-acre private island retreat Over Yonder Cay. This once remote fishing outpost has been developed—in an eco-friendly way—into a luxury estate with villas, a nine-hole golf course, tennis courts, and a deep-water marina for yachts of up to 180 feet in length. What is more, the island generates all of its energy needs from natural elements including the wind and sun, of which there is plenty in the Bahamas. Added to this virtuous base for a holiday is the best in luxury living, akin to the finest superyacht experience, with fine cuisine and wine, butler service, well-being facilities and a state-of-the-art gym. Step ashore with your charter party and settle into one of the four stunning villas strategically dotted around the island to allow for the utmost in privacy. Meridian House is the largest of these properties, and sits on the highest point of the island with views over the Exuma Bank. The grand villa houses four suites for up to eight guests, a gym, movie theater and spa facilities, as well as an infinity pool. Three other satellite villas providing accommodation for a further 20 guests are dotted around the estate and include the hilltop East Cove, the oceanfront West Sands, and South Point, which is located on a sandy promontory overlooking the water. All of the accommodation has been developed sustainably in order to preserve the island’s natural ecosystems, including the mangroves that provide breeding and feeding grounds for birds.

A trio of 120-foot turbines and 1.5 acres of solar panels power Over Yonder Cay’s accommodation, marina, and golf carts, and also make the island’s water (there is a diesel generator backup system for emergencies). Any surplus power that is generated from nature can be stored in a battery bank for future use. It’s a little vision of a more mainstream future, perhaps.
TENACIOUS for tandem cruising. It is just a short sail from here to the archipelago’s main attractions including the magical underwater cave of Thunderball Grotto, a renowned snorkeling spot made famous in two James Bond films; the quaint town and yacht club at Staniel Cay; and the impressive 6,000-foot drop at Exuma Sound, which hosts excellent deep-sea fishing.
For those looking to get back to the water, the diving in this area is some of the best in the world. The Exuma Cays Land and Sea Park is just a few minutes away by tender. A portion of the park is known as “The Aquarium”, and is a protected marine sanctuary. For non-divers in the charter party, simply donning some flippers and snorkeling directly off the beach affords views of a rainbow of exotic fish in the reef located right on the island’s shores. There is also fishing and ample watersports equipment on offer, and, should there be other guests joining you on the island, you could always charter the 115-foot (35m) sailing yacht
Back on the island, guests can congregate at the Beach Club, complete with its own DJ set up and a dancefloor for your very own Caribbean “jump up”—as the locals like to term a spontaneous party. Alternatively, head to the main house for a gourmet feast, or take in a sunset yoga session with the island’s very own yogi. However you choose to spend time on the island is certainly time well spent. For many of us, the summer of 2020 was a washout, with constantly changing quarantine rules and the issues of safety making travel seem an impossibility. So, what’s in store for summer 2021? Never has a charter yacht been as safe a haven as it is now, so if you are looking to make up for lost time, the following islands promise the perfect combination of effortless charm and elegance, all at a safe distance from the crowds. A Formentera, Balearics, Spain The Balearics have evolved to be among the Mediterranean’s most glamorous cruising grounds, attracting the superyacht crowd to enjoy the long hours of sunshine and hip, world-class hangouts. Life in Spain’s Golden Isles is all about long lazy lunches anchored in secret coves, ambling through ancient streets, and finding yourself in the latest beach club (should it take your fancy). However, for those looking for something more off-the-beaten-track or for a rest from partying, the tiny island of Formentera to the south of Ibiza is still relatively peaceful, even during the peak summer months. Of particular interest to the superyacht set is the anchorage of Espalmador, which lies off a tiny uninhabited island to the north of Formentera. Well-protected from the elements, it is blessed with clear waters that lap the soft white sands. Take a picture here and your friends will think you are in The Bahamas or Caribbean rather than Spain.

B Îles d’Hyères, Côte d’Azur, France Those looking to experience the bejeweled coastline of the French Riviera but from afar should turn their attention to the trio of islands, Les Îles d’Hyères (also known as Les Îles d’Or or The Golden Isles). Despite being located just off the French Riviera, these island shores seem a million miles away from the gilded and busy coastline nearby. Low key in every way, Porquerolles and Port-Cros are the quietest of the three islands and have both been turned into national parks. Both of the islands are car-free; Porquerolles, measuring just four miles by two but still the largest of the trio, can be discovered by bicycle or on foot with botanical trails and dusty cycle paths spread along the coastline and through the interior. Take your tender ashore to Notre Dame beach and spend the day wallowing in the shallow waters surrounded by pines. Alternatively, anchor beneath the sheltered cliff, l’Oustaou de Diou (House of God) on the southern coast. Over on PortCros, hiking trails lead through woods and past sun-drenched vineyards and ancient forts. However, as a protected conservation area, some of the most spectacular sights lie beneath the surface in the waters surrounding the island.
Recommended – Jump in and snorkel the five-buoy snorkel trail with panels explaining the marine flora and fauna just off the beach of La Palud.
B C
Maddalena Islands, Sardinia, Italy Suspended between Corsica and Sardinia, the largely uninhabited Maddalena Islands are the antithesis of their neighboring big sisters. Providing sheltered coves and beautiful deserted beaches, the 55 islands and islets here remain largely uninhabited, with waters so clear they could easily be mistaken for the Caribbean. Perfect for watersports, swimming, snorkeling and peaceful nights at anchor, there are just a few waterside trattorias and a handful of small hotels, keeping the turquoise lagoons clear for the waterborne. La Maddalena itself has a pretty port that is bustling, while away from the town quiet corners provide some of the archipelago’s best anchorage spots. But, for the most famous beach, perhaps in the whole of Italy, anchor off the blushing pink-colored stretch of sand at Spiaggia Rosa on the verdant island of Budelli. The area became so famous that it is now a protected site. C
Recommended – Anchor off Maddalena’s north coast and take the tender to the dune-backed beach of Bassa Trinità.

D Stromboli & Panarea, Lipari Islands, Italy Lying to the southwest of the Italian mainland, the volcanic Aeolian Islands possess some of the most dramatic landscapes and fascinating historical sites anywhere in the Mediterranean. The archipelago of seven islands— Stromboli, Panarea, Salina, Lipari, Vulcano, Filicudi and Alicudi—are all protected and have escaped mass development. The active volcanic island of Stromboli is the most spectacular of these. Here you could explore the small city (which is more like a tiny town) at the base of the volcano, but to avoid any possible crowds, head to Ginostra. Accessible by water only, this isolated town has no roads or land-based access and remains a peaceful enclave surrounded by many bays and inlets that are perfect for watersports.
Cruise on to the neighboring island of Panarea and step ashore to the exclusive island that attracts Europe’s elite during the summer months. The Port of San Pietro is a picturesque town with white houses and cobblestone streets, while the rest of the island remains a quiet, reclusive place where simple pleasures prevail. Recommended – Watch the great spectacle of lava explosions from the decks of your yacht while anchored off Stromboli.

10 E Kornati Islands, Croatia Fringed by translucent waters and endowed with unspoiled nature, Croatia’s Kornati Islands National Park is made up of more than 140 protected and mostly uninhabited islands, islets and reefs. Craggy cliffs and stark rock formations form much of the karst limestone landscape, with no more than a few dozen sheltered anchorages. Named after the largest island of Kornat, the archipelago is home to just a handful of simple waterside restaurants, but is still well worth exploring for the pristine waters that provide some of the best snorkeling in the entire Mediterranean.
Recommended - Tender ashore to Kornat’s Strižnja Bay. If you like your fish fresh from the boat, Konoba Darko Strižnja serves catch of the day, prepared and cooked to order. F Paros & Antiparos, Cyclades Over on the Greek isles, the 220-island-strong Cyclades chain retains a loyal section of the superyacht set who always head to the cosmopolitan Mykonos and Santorini for the duration of the summer. However, the lesser-known islands of Paros and Antiparos also provide those looking for a more low-key cruising experience some of the finest shorelines to discover and explore. For decades, these islands have been attracting seclusion and anonymityseeking artists, writers and A-listers to their unspoiled shorelines. Paros offers an endless variety of beaches, some with nothing other than a few rock formations and others with sleepy tavernas. Over on the tiny sister island of Antiparos, even Hollywood’s A-list are generally left alone as they wander the town’s single tiny cobblestone street with its tavernas and bars, while hidden swimming caves dot the coastline.

Discover Spread across 14 islands, with more than 50 bridges to connect them, Stockholm is easy to navigate by bike or simply by wandering around on foot. Dotted with mustsees, there are plenty of world-class museums, historic royal palaces and niche galleries to punctuate a few days ashore, while the New Nordic cuisine-scene will provide the fuel for your sightseeing. One of the city’s most popular and unique attractions, the maritime Vasa Museum is dedicated to a centuries-old warship that sank in the harbor on her maiden voyage in 1628. Recovered from the ocean floor in 1961, The Vasa is the world’s best preserved 17th-century ship. Another must-visit attraction is the six-hundred room Royal Palace located on the lake. No longer inhabited by the Swedish Royal Family, the architecture and lavishly decorated 18thcentury interior provide a stark contrast to the typically restrained Scandinavian aesthetic. Watch the changing of the guard in the morning and explore any or all of the five museums located in the Palace, along with the neighboring National Museum, which showcases an impressive art collection. Tear yourself away from the stunning waterfront and you will discover tiny cobblestone streets and a dynamic city bustling with activity. For a taste of Swedish music and ballet, book tickets for a performance at the Operahuset complex. Escaping the city center, head to the Moderna Museet (Museum of Modern Art) and ArkDes (National Centre for Architecture and Design) on Skeppsholmen Island. Housing a permanent collection of Sweden’s preeminent modern art alongside masterpieces by Matisse, Dali and Picasso, the lantern-lit art gallery is well worth a detour to discover. Shop Design is at the heart of the city, with high-end minimalist fashion boutiques and iconic Scandinavian interior design stores. For iconic Swedish design, head to Malmstenbutiken and Svenskt Tenn, both of which are located on Stockholm’s central boulevard Strandvägen. Alternatively, FabLab in the hip district of Södermalm is a unique concept store with everything from furniture to stationery. For fashion, Drottninggatan is a one-stop shopping destination for high street and vintage stores, while Götgatsbacken in Södermalm’s Götgatan is a pedestrian street lined with trendy boutiques.

Eat Stockholm sits at the center of Scandinavia’s culinary scene and provides a range of cuisine with an increasing focus on sustainable and locally-sourced ingredients. From traditional eateries serving dishes of gravadlax and glogg, to fusion cuisine and Michelin-starred eateries, it has become known as one of the leading gastronomic destinations for foodies around the world. Head to the Hötorget square for the outdoor food market and try a traditional snack of Toast Skagen (toast with shrimp). While out cycling the cobblestone streets, head to Gamla Stan’s old square for a hot white chocolate at Café Kaffekoppen. Another traditional dish is herring, and the best place to try this is at the ancient grand café, Prinsen. Oaxen Krog is an eccentric restaurant from the evercreative chef Magnus Ek. With either a six- or 10-course tasting menu to choose from, diners can expect modern riffs on Nordic-style dishes, all served in a converted boat shed that has been turned into one of the finest dining experiences in the city. Operakällaren is a fine-dining venue serving award-winning, Michelin-starred cuisine. Set in Stockholm’s 1890s opera house, this baroque-style venue has been given a cutting-edge makeover, and provides a spectacular setting in which to enjoy some of the best dishes in the city.
For something a little lighter, Tak (which translates as “roof ” in Swedish) boasts four different venues under the eponymous roof: a restaurant, raw bar, cocktail bar and terrace. The raw bar serves sashimis, tartars and oysters, while the restaurant serves contemporary Scandinavian dishes with a Japanese twist. Drink Stockholm is hip, but in a relaxed way—more chic than trendy. Stureplan is the focal point for nightlife, while Södermalm is the social epicenter for locals, and Östermalm’s champagne bars attract the well-heeled. For views over Stockholm, head to Tak’s Skybar where DJs play their sets until dawn, and in the summertime, Sundays are set up for movie nights under the stars. Häktet remains a firm favorite with the it-crowd, with its inventive seasonal cocktails and local artisanal beers. And if you happen to be in Sweden in June, time it right and you could find yourself in the midst of the midsummer party, when Pagan celebrations, dancing and drinking continue for two days straight.

Sleep If you are interested in spending a night or two ashore for a change of scene, Stockholm has plenty of luxurious hotels with sustainable credentials. In fact, this city is said to have the highest number of eco hotels in the world, with more than 92% of the city’s hotels holding an environmental certification. Set right across from the Royal Palace and the harbor Strömkajen, the Grand Hotel is perfectly situated in central Stockholm. With views of the waterfront, it is a beautiful, classic hotel, with the fashion district Bibliotekstan and The Moderna Museet right on its doorstep. Comprising two 19th century buildings that have been stylishly converted, the Nobis is another property boasting old school charm and modern style. Its location is perfect on the Norrmalmstorg in Östermalm. For something a little more quirky, Ett Hem redefines the notion of luxury. Hidden away among the exclusive residential streets in the embassy district of Lärkstaden in Östermalm, the hotel is also close enough to the city center to access the high-end boutiques and museums by foot or bike. Sustainability Sweden’s capital has long put sustainability at the top of its agenda. Where else in the world can you swim in a busy urban harbor, drive a solar-powered boat, stay in an eco-friendly hotel and then dine on organic cuisine? The city has more than its fair share of parks and green spaces and is beautifully balanced, with approximately one-third of the city devoted to green space, one-third to water and one-third to urbanization. You can rent an electric bike, traversing the harbor across bridges with cycle lanes that wind almost 600 miles all over the city, or hire a solar-powered boat made from wood from sustainable sources.

SCOPE
01 Northrop & Johnson’s Success in 2020 Despite the uncertainty of 2020, Northrop & Johnson sold 103 luxury yachts throughout the year. These sales included yachts that were for sale with Northrop & Johnson as central agencies as well as sales in which Northrop & Johnson introduced the buyer. Brokers also were able to move inventory faster than other yacht brokerage houses. Due to the high demand for luxury yachts during the pandemic and Northrop & Johnson’s yacht brokers’ intrinsic abilities to match the right buyer with the right yacht, at least four sales that took place in 2020 saw yachts on the market for two months or less. Northrop & Johnson enjoyed successes in charter as well. The 2020-2021 winter charter season was fairly busy despite global travel restrictions. The summer 2021 season is shaping up to be one of the busiest yet. Lastly, Northrop & Johnson’s crew services team had a banner year, placing more crew than ever before.
02
02 Northrop & Johnson Partners with Compass Northrop & Johnson kicked off a strategic partnership with Compass, the U.S.’ fastest-growing luxury real estate technology company. Both front-runners in their respective and compatible industries, Northrop & Johnson and Compass have joined forces to better serve the ultra-affluent clientele they share. “Northrop & Johnson and Compass are aligned in our dedication to providing unparalleled experiences to our clients, as well as the innovative, forward-thinking marketing and technology available to our brokers,” said Northrop & Johnson President & COO Daniel Ziriakus. “We have already enjoyed a variety of successful events and experiences with Compass and look forward to many more in the future, now as partners.” “In the past five months, Compass has experienced record revenue production locally and nationally,” said Compass Managing Director of Sales, Florida, Jeff Polashuk. “Partnering with an industry leader like Northrop & Johnson is a prime example of how we continue investing in opportunities that grant Compass agents access to like-minded clientele.” 03 Northrop & Johnson Partners with Louis XIII Cognac Northrop & Johnson launched a new collaboration with Louis XIII, one of the world’s most prestigious cognac brands. “Louis XIII is the embodiment of sophistication and luxury, two ideals of the Northrop & Johnson brand,” said Northrop & Johnson President & COO Daniel Ziriakus. “Our new partnership is rooted in the wellsuited pairing of luxury yachting and luxury spirits, as well as the joint passion our brands have for providing unmatched experiences for our clients.” Northrop & Johnson Managing Director & Chief Content Officer Daniel Wade is excited by the prospect – “we look forward to working with Louis XIII to create elevated experiences and unique initiatives that deliver the greatest value for our shared ultra-affluent clientele. Northrop & Johnson and Louis XIII have already enjoyed a synergistic relationship and we’re excited to curate future activations and events together as partners.” 03

FA Q s YAC H T P U R C H AS E The experts at Northrop & Johnson help you navigate the complexities of the superyacht market as they answer those not-so-Frequently Asked Questions. Why are some yachts not available for sale or charter to U.S. residents while in U.S. waters? Any yacht or vessel that was not built in the U.S. and has therefore never paid U.S. customs duty, or a vessel that has been built in the U.S. but then exported and currently operating under a foreign flag, cannot be offered for sale or charter to U.S. citizens while in U.S. waters until it makes a formal entry into the U.S. United States duty – assessed at 1.5% of the appraised value – is a one-time taxable event. A duty-free formal entry can be made if duty had previously been paid and can be proven with a receipt or a returning U.S.-built vessel.
05 Rolls-Royce Ghost Debut with Northrop & Johnson The Rolls-Royce Ghost activation between Rolls-Royce and Northrop & Johnson in October 2020 was very successful. The event was held in Fort Lauderdale during the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show. Rolls-Royce unveiled its newly redesigned Ghost at a beautiful villa along the Intracoastal Waterway and Northrop & Johnson participated with two luxury yachts on display. Guests of both Rolls-Royce and Northrop & Johnson were in attendance to experience and test drive the Ghost, tour two Northrop & Johnson yachts for sale—the 86-foot (26.29m) Sunseeker motor yacht PURA VIDA and the 55-foot (16.76m) Zeelander ALMOST HEAVEN—and mix and mingle while enjoying first-class hospitality. The activation was extremely well received by both Rolls-Royce and Northrop & Johnson, further solidifying the partnership between the two brands.
Why are some yachts for sale VAT paid and others not? Whether you will have to pay Value Added Tax (VAT) on your superyacht purchase depends largely on where you are resident and where the yacht will operate. A yacht belonging to an E.U. citizen must have VAT paid in the EU if it is being operated privately. If the Owner is a non-E.U. citizen and he/she is planning on keeping the yacht in E.U. waters and operating privately, then VAT may still be applicable but this will depend on the length of time the yacht will stay in E.U. waters. Stays of less than 18 months will usually mean that the yacht can be temporarily imported without the payment of VAT. VAT rates range from 15% to 25% of the yacht’s value depending on the country, and once it is paid in one country its VAT status is (normally) recognized by other EU tax authorities. Yachts that may be exempt from VAT include older yachts built and moored in the E.U. before a certain past date (often difficult to prove), and those operated commercially for charter. However if a yacht is operated commercially then the beneficial Owner must also charter the yacht from the owning company, paying a commercial rate and paying tax on the charters, so this is not a free pass. It is also worth noting that it is up to the Owner to prove their yacht’s VAT status (guilty until proven innocent), and you must always have the correct paperwork onboard and available for inspection by Port state authorities. Who pays the yacht broker’s commission? The yacht broker’s commission is payable by the seller. The commission is usually 10 percent of the purchase price on completion of the sale, split between the selling broker and buying broker in a 40/60 split. For further pearls of wisdom on any off-the-cuff questions relating to the superyacht market, please contact your Northrop & Johnson broker.
